9+ Best Travel Art Supplies for Painting Artists Who Travel

One of the perks of painting is that all of the necessary materials are fairly portable. This article will guide you through which travel art supplies are the easiest to pack and take with you.

We are lucky in this day and age to be able to carry our paints in small paint tubes and have easels that are light and foldable. However, there are a LOT of different materials out there and it can be hard to know what exactly you need to paint and travel. I will break down exactly what you will need, so that you can easily be a traveling artist, painting on the go!

Painting Surfaces Best for Travel

This is one of the more important of the travel art supplies you’ll need to remember to take with you. As wherever you paint you will always need something to paint on.

I recommend using loose gessoed canvas that can be rolled up. Boards will take up more space than stretched canvas. Not to mention you have to be a little more careful not to puncture or damage stretch canvases!

You can gesso your own canvas or purchase it already primed and ready to paint on! When you are ready to start your painting, you will simply cut out a size that is appropriate for your project. Then attach the piece of canvas to a hard board with some masking tape. This hard board will act as a support for all of your paintings on your journey. You will be able to use both sides if you wish to do multiple paintings at a time! I do this often 😉

Art Supplies for Storing Paintings and Canvas

To transport your canvas I recommend to roll it up and store it safely inside a mailing tube. This provides excellent protection for your painting surface and keeps it from getting any creases.

In addition, I recommend for you to use the mailing tube to store your completed paintings on your travels ( once they are dry ). Again this is a wonderful way to protect your work from getting any folds or creases. When traveling we often accidentally drop things or stack things on top of one another. Therefore storing your work in a mailing tube alleviates a lot of worry about any damage that may incur to your work!

✨ A quick tip about rolling up paintings – keep the painted side on the outside! I know this sounds odd but it is the best way to take care of your paintings while rolling them up. Rolling oil paintings inwards can cause them to chip or flake which will become visible when laid out flat again.

Travel Art Carrying Case

What if your paintings are still wet and you need to continue your travels? Enter the wet panel art carrying case ! You can purchase one or make your own. They allow you to store wet painting safely inside a box in such a way so that it won’t touch anything else. I personally keep my painting taped down to a board to allow for me to place my painting safely inside a carrier if I need to do so.

Art Supplies to Speed up Drying Time

If you are using oil paints and would rather not have to deal with wet paintings while traveling. There are specific travel art supplies that can help speed up the drying time.

Liquin for traveling artists

Liquin will help a great deal to speed up the drying time! Using just a little will go a long way. Add it to your paint at times when you would normally use linseed oil to thin out your paint.

Whenever I use Liquin in a painting, I take out a small amount of it from the jar using a palette knife and place a little pile of it onto my palette. This way it is easy for me to add it as needed while I mix my oil paints .

Lightweight Travel Easels

An easel can be a little bit of a headache for artists who are traveling, as it is most likely the largest item out of all your travel art supplies. However, there are some great travel easel options out there for every budget!

Pochade boxes for travelers

A pochade box is one of the most popular easels for plein air painters and traveling artists. They are also quite historical as they came into popularity in the 19th century when artists started to paint out of doors. Pochade boxes tend to be small and are highly portable as you can store not just your materials inside them but also your painting. You can purchase one or make your own out of a cigar box!

French easel travel supplies

I personally use a French easel when I travel as well as in my studio. So, it is nice to be able to use the same easel that I always use when on the go. Similar to the pochade box, it allows you to store a lot of supplies inside the easel including your palette. It can be folded up smaller which makes it easy to carry and transport.

However, the downside to a French easel however is that it can be a bit heavier than other options, due to its wood construction. So, if you are looking for something particularly lightweight, this might not be the best option for you.

Tripod easel with palette box

The tripod easel and palette box can sometimes be a good alternative to the traditional French easel. The versions made out of aluminum can be lighter weight and less prone to breakage. In addition, this variety gives you a good distance between the painting and the palette – something missing with a pochade box.

A good camera tripod easel with a palette box can be a little pricey. However, if you are planning to do a lot of plein air painting or walking with your painting supplies. It is really worth it to get a lightweight easel, as your back will thank you! 🙂

Brushes and Brush Cleaner

For traveling I recommend the Guerilla ‘mighty mite brush washer’ . It is leak proof, you don’t have to worry about soiling things when traveling with with linseed oil or turpenoid. In addition, it works as a terrific brush cleaner that lasts a long time.

Palette cups

You could also use oil painting palette cups. These are small metal cups that you can clip onto your palette. They are not meant to be a brush cleaners however. So you can’t clean your brush in this as thoroughly as you could in a regular brush cleaner. However, these make for super useful travel art supplies. As they work great as receptacles to keep your linseed oil and or turpenoid in – when you need to use those in your painting.

Paints for Travel

Most paint tubes come in a large or small size – typically 37 ml or 150 ml size tubes. So, when traveling with your painting supplies it is best to use small sized tubes. As this will help a great deal with keeping the weight down.

If small sized paint tubes are still too heavy and you don’t need to take that much paint with you… Then you could purchase small containers to store your paint in. Just keep in mind, that the paint will dry quicker in such containers than if it remained in a tube!

So, if you are planning to travel and paint for just a few days then small containers work nicely. However, not if you will be on the go with your travel art supplies for a couple of weeks or longer. As the paint will likely dry out over that period time.

It is possible to travel with your oil painting supplies on an airplane . However, there are a few things that are valuable to know before you start packing your travel art supplies! After traveling many times with oil paints – believe me when I say that you will appreciate knowing how to fly with oil paints!

I am not traveling very far but when I do travel I have a few art supplies! And I have taken a couple of trips to Yosemite National Park, and Big Sur, and even Lake Tahoe it was beautiful with so much to paint! I have a few travel watercolor sets! And I have gotten good at scouting out a spot with natural beauty as well as shade!

Hi Abbi – oh that is wonderful that you have taken your art supplies with you to some of those beautiful places! Watercolor sets are the best for traveling as they don’t require many materials. I have found that painting in different places does make you better at being able to scout good painting locations – and its wonderful when shade accompanies a good painting view 😉

Hi Elizabeth! I have been Plein Aire painting for years. Since I paint locally one of the best aids is my garden wagon. It collapses and stays in the car trunk ready to load up and head into nature filled up with all the painting supplies mentioned. It is better than using a backpack!

Hi Sandy! Oh that is a really good tip. What a great setup to be able to collapse it and keep it in your car. I completely agree – Carrying everything in a backpack can be quite exhausting as once you reach your destination you are a bit too tired to paint! 😉

Create a Travel Art Kit to Keep Kids Busy on the Road

I love to travel with my kids, but I’ve learned that I need to plan activities to keep kids busy on the road. This travel art kit is a great solution!

If you follow me on Instagram, you know that I took my kids on quite the road trip this summer! First, we drove to Sacramento, where we dropped my nephew off at my brother’s house. Every summer he stays with us for a week. From Sacramento, we  drove to Idaho to visit my sister , then up into the Idaho mountains for a family reunion . After that, we drove south to Utah, where we played tourists and went to my grandmother’s 90th birthday party . We were gone for just over three weeks. That’s a long time to have kids on the road, especially when you consider that I was solo parenting for most of that time.

I love traveling light, so I’m always looking for simple solutions to keep kids busy as we travel. This summer I created a simple travel art kit that was a big hit, and I’m sharing this simple travel solution.

• Why You Need to Make Time for Family Road Trips

I’ve been using travel journals with my kids for years; we make one for every trip we take. Sometime’s they’re fancy, and sometimes they’re simple spiral bound notebooks . This year I extended my kids’ creativity with a few extra supplies. We added:

• One ream of white paper
• Scissors for each kid.

Note: if even washable markers make you nervous, try substituting Crayola Color Wonder products.

Here’s the secret: these supplies were for when we were not in the car! I’ve learned that, just like my kids need to decompress from school , sometimes they need to decompress from being in the car. Going to a park is my favorite way for them to decompress, but that’s not always possible! We’ve stayed in towns in Nevada where, as far as I can tell, there IS no park!

After a long day in the car, it’s easy to turn on the TV and let them watch whatever’s on. It’s fine to do that sometimes, but it’s not a three week solution. And that’s where this simple little kit comes in.

We kept these supplies in a simple canvas bag (a small backpack would work even better). We pulled it out when we arrived at our hotel or Airbnb place, and the kids got to work.

15 Essentials for your DIY ‘Road Tripping with Kids’ Kit

Embarking on any road trip is a brave task for some people. The journey is long, the space is small, and the destination might be exciting but there’s still a lot of time before you get there. Setting out on a road trip with kids, however, is a feat that some people can’t even imagine! How can you make a long car ride with your little ones more endurable for both you and them?

Well, you can do that with a little DIY magic of course! Try creating a “road trip kit” that has everything you could possibly need to keep your kids entertained. If they’re very young, make the kit for yourself with them in mind. If they’re a little older, make a kit specifically for each kid. They’ll love getting a present at the beginning of the journey and it’ll quickly become their survival kit during long hours!

Here are 15 things your DIY “road trip kit” should absolutely include before you settle your kids into the back seat!

Even if your kids would rather have pop, water is the best thirst quencher. It will help headaches and keep away fatigue. Give each kid a fun new refillable, BPA free water bottle that they’ll enjoy using along the way. Water bottles with straws, like these ones, minimize the chances of little ones spilling on their clothes. Being able to fill it at rest stops will save you money!

2. Flavoured drinks

Bringing juice, pop, or Gatorade along gives the kids something to drink when they’re tired of water. Especially if you don’t get them fun drinks often, they’ll be pleased with the treat. Juice will also keep their blood sugar stable if the stops between meals are long. Be careful with juice boxes and very young children; remind them not to squeeze!

3. Healthy snacks

Choose snacks that are yummy but still nutritional. Kids who eat too much junk on a road trip might become tired and cranky or hyper and hard to calm down. Look for things that are easy to eat with their hands and individually packaged to minimize garbage and mess.

Road trips are fun and you want your kids to stay excited about the experience. There’s no harm in packing them a few treats! Individually packaged chips and chocolate bars make for yummy breaks between more nutritional snacks.

As long as no one feels queasy when they read in the car, books are the perfect way for the kids to keep occupied and for you to enjoy a bit of quiet time.

6. Drawing and colouring

Drawing and colouring is a great, creative way to keep the kids’ hands busy and their minds occupied. It’s also perfect for kids who are too young to read on their own or don’t like to. They can draw something related to your road trip or colour in a new book you got them just for this long ride!

7. Writing activities

Writing is another way for kids to use their imagination while they’re cooped up in one place. If they’re not avid writers of they’re too young, try simple writing activities like puzzle books.

8. Hands-on games

Origami, card games played on a tray, and other card friendly activities that will keep your kids concentrated are life savers for both of you. Choose things that don’t have many pieces or that can be contained easily.

Whether your kids bring personal listening devices or you bring tunes for the stereo that everyone will love, you’ll be glad to have them! Sometimes, after hours of driving, conversation wears thin and people get tired. Music fills the silence in a nice way and still keeps you entertained.

Audiobooks are a great alternative to music and they’ll let kids rest while remaining entertained. If your trip is very long, start a new audiobook that no one has listened to and hear it together as a family!

11. Travel projects

Starting a project at the beginning of the trip and finishing it at the end can be lots of fun! It also gives kids something to concentrate on throughout the whole ride, but in digestible chunks of time. Try giving them an envelope to collect trinkets and little keep sakes in or a scrapbook to journal in along the way.

It’s a simple fact: where there are kids, there’s probably garbage of some kind. Snack wrappers, tissues, and so on will pile up in the car if you don’t bring somewhere to put them. Include a few garbage bags in your own travel kit or consider investing in or making an actual travel garbage bag!

Messy faces, sticky fingers, and runny noses are inevitable on a long car ride, so prepare for them! If you’re worried you won’t have room for a full box, put a travel pack in each kid’s kit and a couple in the glove compartment too.

Giving the kids something soft to sleep on will encourage them to get as much sleep as possible. This might keep everyone from getting cranky! If you don’t have room for full sized pillows, consider investing in or making travel pillows instead.

At each rest stop, give the kids a chance to run around, kick balls, jump rope, and just play. The more they move, the calmer they’ll be when it’s time to sit again. Give them toys in each kit that they can play with together!

Every Road Trip Car Breakdown Kit Should Include These Tools, According To Our Travel Expert

T here's nothing like taking an epic road trip. It's undeniably a perfect way to travel , especially if you're exploring large countries like the United States. Unfortunately, traveling by car comes with all sorts of problems. Many of the best road trips take you to remote, off-the-beaten-path destinations where you can experience the natural beauty and rugged landscapes, but it also means you'll be far away from any mechanic should something go wrong with your car.

According to data gathered by Agero, more than 69 million cars break down in the United States each year, and an AAA  report  shows that if your car is over 10 years old, you run an even higher risk of car trouble. Nothing ruins an unforgettable road trip vacation like being stranded on the side of the highway for hours while you wait for a tow truck. Even the most seasoned road tripper can face problems if unprepared. With some preparation and planning, you can avoid getting stranded roadside by packing a car breakdown kit.

Nate Murphy, author of the best-selling Van Conversion Guide and founder of DIYhero, a van conversion course , has spent years of his life on extended road trips. In an exclusive interview with Explore, Nate told us everything he recommends, including packing a road trip breakdown kit to get back on the road faster when you run into unfortunate car trouble.

Perform Some Basic Vehicle Checks Before You Begin Building Your Tool Kit

Before you begin building your road trip breakdown kit, having your car checked out is a good idea. Going to the mechanic for a trip check is much like going to the doctor for a check-up but on your vehicle. You don't want to wait until something goes wrong to have things checked out. Nate Murphy suggests taking your car to a trusted mechanic before your trip to ensure nothing major is wrong and to help you feel safer on a long-haul road trip.  "If your vehicle is due for a service or has been showing signs of trouble, it's a good idea to address these issues before hitting the road. No one wants to spend half their road trip waiting for a vehicle to get fixed," Nate told Explore.

Even if your car seems okay, Nate recommends doing some basic checks. "This includes checking the oil, coolant, brake fluid, transmission fluid, and windshield washer fluid levels. Additionally, check the condition of the brakes, tires, and lights" he told us. Before you begin purchasing items for your kit, read over your owner's manual because tools can depend on the make, model, and year of your car.

Plan Your Route Ahead Of Time So That You Can Be Prepared For All Types Of Conditions

Nate Murphy has ventured all over on road trips, so he knows what to expect in almost any situation. If you're new to road-tripping or visiting an area for the first time, he suggests doing some research ahead of time so you know what to expect. "Properly consider the weather and road conditions you may face on your trip. If you are traveling through mountainous terrain, or other places where it may snow, be sure to pack snow chains or socks — or appropriate tires," Nate told Explore. 

You should also check that you know how to use everything you bring for your vehicle. Ensure you know how to apply the chains before you leave because "no one wants to be figuring that out in the freezing cold!" he reminded us. Knowing the weather, terrain, and potentially hazardous conditions along your road trip route will ensure you pack everything you need and can make  road trips so much easier. 

Take Care Of Your Tires

Once you're well aware of the condition of your vehicle and the conditions on your road trip route, it's time to start packing the perfect road trip breakdown kit. During his many adventures, Nate discovered that self-sufficiency is vital when traveling. He recommends packing some essential tools to be well-prepared and ensure your trip is stress-free. First, he suggests purchasing a tire foam or tire repair kit to help repair them quickly. "If far away from services, this cheap and lightweight item can be a lifesaver. It is worth checking out how to use them before you go, just in case you do not have data," he told us.

In addition to the tire repair kit, ensure you have a tire pump for when you have a slow leak and need to add air to balance your tire pressure. Some varieties run off your car's battery, and manual pumps are also on the market. Most cars have a spare tire in the back, so pack a four-way lug wrench if you need to change one during your trip. "I would recommend that you learn how to access the spare tire before you go, on some vehicles this is a little more complicated than you may realize," Nate told us.

Prepare For Battery Problems

Chances are, there's probably been a time in your life when you've returned to your vehicle only to find that the engine won't start. Perhaps you were so excited to hit the trails that you unknowingly left your headlights on or something plugged into the vehicle that slowly drained your battery. We've all been there!

According to Nate, "A dead battery, especially in colder weather, is not uncommon." He's right — it's one of the most common car problems. And since batteries are one of the most critical aspects of our car's electrical systems, the vehicle will not turn on without a jump start. Keeping jumper cables in your car is always a good idea, especially on a road trip. Nate recommends keeping cables at least 16 feet in our road trip breakdown kit so that a kind passerby can jump you in a pinch. It will also ensure you're empowered to help other, less prepared road trippers should you run into someone who needs a battery jump during your travels. 

"Again, spend 20 minutes to familiarize yourself with how to properly jumpstart an engine," Nate told us. If you're traveling to a super remote area, consider a 12-volt battery-operated jump starter that allows you to give your car battery the boost it needs without the help of another vehicle. Prices for the portable jump starters start at about $50.

Other Essential Items To Keep In Your Road Trip Car Breakdown Kit

Nate recommends packing a socket wrench set before you head out. Socket wrenches are handy for all repairs, especially if you're familiar with a car engine. "If you know nothing about engines, this might not be so useful — but if you have a bit of an idea, you can fix something before you get to a mechanic," he told Explore. 

Bring a flashlight for car problems at night so you can see what you're working on. A reflective triangle is also helpful for safety during late-night road trips . Duct tape can be beneficial for temporary fixes, and a multi-tool is suitable for all sorts of repairs. Pack a physical map in case your phone unexpectedly dies, or you don't have enough signal to use GPS.

"Lastly, check that you have appropriate breakdown assistance and insurance," Nate told Explore. "A roadside assistance plan can save you thousands if you break down somewhere remote or need a tow." You should call your insurance before you depart and ensure you're covered for your trip, especially if traveling internationally. Adjusting your policy to ensure that you're covered is a good idea. Once you've created your perfect car breakdown kit, it's important that you periodically check that everything is in working order. Some items, like tire repair kits, may expire, so ensure your equipment is up to date before each road trip.
