Which New York City discount pass is best?

If you’re not sure which card to choose, here is a New York City attraction pass comparison chart so you can see which ones include the activities and attractions you definitely want to see. The prices in parentheses show the regular admission price, so you can calculate your savings with each card.

Looking at all the options, my top recommendation is the New York Pass if it’s your first time in the Big Apple or you plan to do a lot of sightseeing . Specifically, the three-day card will give you plenty of time to see the most popular attractions.

If you aren’t planning to see that many things, and saving on prime attractions is what you’re after, then grab a pen and a piece of paper and run this quick calculation:

  • Choose which of the starred attractions in the chart you want to visit no matter what.
  • Add up the ticket prices of those attractions.
  • Check the price for each of the tourist pass options (take into account the days you want to spend visiting those attractions or the number of attractions you want to see.)
  • Check if all the passes include the starred attractions you want to visit. If not, add up the prices of those attractions to the cost of that pass to have the total cost per option.
  • Compare the total cost of visiting your favorite attractions without a pass with the total cost per tourist pass (cost of the passes + cost of attractions not included.)

At this point you should know which is the cheapest option for you, but if you’re still unsure and are deciding between two options, repeat the calculation with other non-starred attractions you want to visit, too. If the difference is not that much, I recommend getting an all-inclusive pass, like the New York Pass or the New York Sightseeing Day Pass .

Tips to make the most of your NYC pass

With a bit of planning, your New York City sightseeing pass will pay for itself. Be sure to take the time to see which attractions are close to each other so you can maximize your time and savings. We were disappointed to learn the site seeing pass does not include the 9/11 museum.

' src=

Hi James, Yes, the New York Sightseeing Pass is the only NYC card that doesn’t include the 9/11 Museum (although it does include a 9/11 walking tour).

' src=

Hi Karen I’m bamboozled by all the options! If you buy the passes, is entry free to the sites or discounted?

Hi Niamh, Typically, entry is included (free) if you have the attraction pass. However, different passes include different attractions, so take a look at the chart in this article to see which attractions are included in each pass.

Hello Ascen,

My husband and I are taking our son and 10 year old grandson to NYC for a 3-day visit in June. We are considering either the 3-day NYC pass or the Sightseeing Day pass. We would like to upgrade the Ellis Island/Statue of Liberty visit to include the pedestal access and possibly the crown. We would also like to upgrade the Empire State building 86th floor ticket to include the 102nd floor viewing. Do either pass include the upgrade, or would we need to purchase a ticket upgrade when we arrive at the attraction? Would it be best to purchase tickets before we go for specific days? Can we purchase the passes this early and do we need to specify which days we want to use them for? If we don’t specify days, could the attraction be full for the day? Thank you for your information. So helpful!!

Hi Karen, You can get the 3-day pass and upgrade your ticket once you reach the attraction.

New York Pass Comparison

Which city sightseeing pass should you buy.

Latest update: March 6, 2024

In a nutshell

  • There are 4 city sightseeing passes with which you can save time and money.
  • There are time-based passes (for as many attractions as you want in a limited amount of time) and attraction-based passes (for a certain number of attractions).
  • If you want to see as many attractions as possible , we recommend the New York All-Inclusive Pass or the New York Sightseeing Pass .
  • The All-Inclusive Pass or the New York City Pass are the best choice if you want to see the most important sights in a short amount of time.
  • If you want to visit the major sights without any stress , you should pick the Sightseeing Flex Pass , Explorer Pass or New York City Pass.

In our article we’ll show you which New York passes are available, what advantages and disadvantages they have and which one is the best for you.

Our recommendation for those in a hurry: this is the best New York pass

In this article, we compare all of the New York passes in-depth and show you through detailed sample calculations which pass is the best choice for each type of traveller. If that’s too much information for you though, we can totally understand that.

That’s why, for those of you in a hurry, we’ll start right away with a very brief summary of the article and answer the question: which New York pass is the best?

#1 The best New York pass if you want to see as many attractions as possible:

Best choice: New York All-Inclusive Pass or New York Sightseeing Pass

If you’d like to see as many attractions in New York as possible, the New York All-Inclusive Pass is the best option according to our calculation.

But the New York Sightseeing Pass hardly does any worse here, so it’s worth comparing the included attractions and matching them to your personal agenda.

Depending on how many sights in New York you’d like to visit and how much time you have, you can save more than a hundred dollars with the New York All-Inclusive Pass.

You can buy the New York All-Inclusive Pass here You can buy the New York Sightseeing Pass here

#2 The best discount pass if you want to see the most important sights quickly (in 3 days):

Best choice: New York All-Inclusive Pass or New York City Pass

If you want to see the most important sights in a short amount of time, the savings aren’t very high with any of the passes.

In this case, you can think about whether you might want to buy your tickets individually instead. You’ll still have the most savings with the New York City Pass here, which we always like to use ourselves.

You can buy the New York City Pass here

If you’d like to use the Hop-on-Hop-off-busses as well and rent a bike in Central Park, then the savings with the New York All-Inclusive Pass and the New York Explorer Pass are the biggest.

You can buy the New York All-Inclusive Pass here You can buy the New York Explorer Pass here

#3 The best New York pass if you leisurely want to see the most important sights:

Best choice: Sightseeing Flex Pass, Explorer Pass or New York City Pass

If you want to give yourself a little more time (e.g. 5 or 7 days) and would rather visit the most important sights in New York a little more gradually, you also have the choice between three passes.

The differences of savings between these three passes are not very great. It really just depends on which sights you’d like to see the most. Simply take a look at what’s included in each pass and compare it with your personal to-do list.

You can buy the Sightseeing Flex Pass here You can buy the Explorer Pass here You can buy the New York City Pass here

#4 If you only want to see very few attractions

Best choice: buy individual tickets instead of a New York pass

If you’d only like to visit a very few selected attractions or want to decide what you’ll see on short notice and prefer to be flexible, a pass is generally not worth it.

To avoid having to stand in never-ending lines everywhere you go, we’d recommend that you always get your individual tickets online.

Now you know which passes are the best choice. If you also want to know exactly why that is, then keep reading the rest of our great New York pass comparison. If our brief summary was enough for you, we’re happy to have helped.

How do the New York passes work?

The New York passes are offered specifically for tourists. Maybe you’ve already seen something similar in other cities. These passes are often called City Cards as well.

You buy the passes for a certain amount and can then use them to visit different sights, museums and attractions . Besides that, you can take part in numerous guided city tours for free and take various bus and boat rides .

There are two types of New York passes:

#1 Time-based passes

There are passes that are valid for a specific amount of time , e.g. for 3, 5 or 7 days. In this time, you can go to all of the sights, tours and attractions that are included in the pass.

#2 Attractions-based passes

The second type are passes that can be used for a certain number of sights and attractions . So you buy these passes for 5, 7 or 10 attractions, for example, and are more flexible time-wise.

All of the New York passes now work on your mobile phone too. You used to have to pick up the passes somewhere, which was always a little time-consuming.

Today, you’ll simply get an email with a mobile pass after your purchase. You can then comfortably present it on your smartphone at all sights. You don’t necessarily need internet when on the go, as you can easily save your pass and then show it offline as well.

Alternatively, there’s also the possibility of printing out the pass yourself. Anyone who doesn’t have a smartphone or doesn’t trust their battery-life can choose this option. In any case, there’s no annoying pick up on-site.

What New York passes are there?

In most cities there’s only a single City Card. In New York, there are four offers to choose from. There are actually five, because one of the passes is available in two very different options. That doesn’t make it any less difficult, but that’s what our New York pass comparison is for.

In the following table, you’ll find an initial overview of the available passes. You’ll then find more detailed information about every pass, as well as the advantages and disadvantages.

#1 The New York All-Inclusive Pass

The New York All-Inclusive Pass is one of the most popular and extensive passes for New York.

new york day trip pass

What does the New York All-Inclusive Pass offer?

The New York All-Inclusive Pass enables access to more than 100 attractions , such as:

  • Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, One World Observatory and Statue of Liberty
  • The new observation deck Edge
  • Around 30 museums
  • 1 day Hop-on Hop-off busses with Big Bus
  • Boat rides with Circle Line
  • Numerous tours

What does the New York All-Inclusive Pass cost?

You can find the prices for the New York All-Inclusive Pass in the following table.

On the website of the New York All-Inclusive Pass, there’s a year-round sale. That means that you don’t actually have to pay the regular prices for the pass, there’s always around 20 to 30% discount on the regular price.

We’ve therefore written the reduced prices directly on the overview as well:

Beware of supposed discount codes for the New York All-Inclusive Pass: discount codes for the New York All-Inlusive Pass circulate on some websites that allow you to get a 20% rebate off the pass. This discount is only on the original price of the pass though. Because the prices on the site are always reduced anyways, sometimes you’ll pay more with a discount code than without.

Advantages and disadvantages

Advantages of the New York All-Inclusive Pass:

  • Very large selection of attractions
  • The longer the pass is, the cheaper it is per day

Disadvantages of the New York All-Inclusive Pass:

  • Only one day Hop-on Hop-off-Bus
  • Slightly non-transparent pricing

Our verdict on the New York All-Inclusive Pass

The New York All-Inclusive Pass is especially worth it if you’d like to visit a lot of attractions or want to go on guided tours.

If you want to see only a few select museums and sights, it won’t get any cheaper with the New York All-Inclusive Pass.

But if you want to visit a ton of attractions, you can save over a hundred dollars with the pass.

#2 New York Sightseeing Pass

Along with the New York All-Inclusive Pass, the New York Sightseeing Pass is the most extensive of all the New York passes.

What does the New York Sightseeing Pass offer?

More than 100 attractions are included in the New York Sightseeing Pass, such as:

  • Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, Statue of Liberty and One World Observatory
  • The new viewing platform Edge is included in the Sightseeing Pass.
  • Almost 30 museums
  • 1 day Hop-on Hop-off busses from Big Bus
  • Large selection of boat rides

What does the New York Sightseeing Pass cost?

The New York Sightseeing Pass is the only pass that exists in two different variations :

1. The normal Sightseeing Pass, also called the Day Pass, which is valid for a certain number of days . On these days, you can use all of the attractions.

2. Alternatively, you can opt for the Flex Pass. With this, you decide how many attractions you’d like to visit with the pass beforehand. You then have 30 days to visit these attractions.

Advantages of the Sightseeing Pass:

  • In all, the best offers of all passes
  • Empire State Building and One World Trade Observatory are included
  • All popular museums are included

Disadvantages of the Sightseeing Pass:

  • The Sightseeing Pass is expensive
  • The two different price models can be confusing

Our verdict on the New York Sightseeing Pass

The New York Sightseeing Pass is definitely the most extensive of all the passes , and with the two pricing schemes, the Day Pass or the Flex Pass, the pass is an interesting option for almost all travelers .

Anyone who’d like a little more flexibility and who doesn’t want to visit 3 attractions per day would be well advised with the Sightseeing Flex Pass.

You can buy the Sightseeing Pass over the booking platform GetYourGuide. It’s usually a little cheaper there.

#3 New York Explorer Pass

new york day trip pass

What does the New York Explorer Pass offer?

The New York Explorer Pass includes more than 95 attractions , such as:

  • The Empire State Building, Top of the Rock and the Statue of Liberty
  • 1 Day Hop-on Hop-off busses with Big Bus can be chosen as an attraction
  • Various boat rides

What does the New York Explorer Pass cost?

With the New York Explorer Pass, you don’t decide on a certain number of days, but rather on a certain number of attractions , which you can visit within 60 days.

Advantages of the Explorer Pass:

  • All major museums in New York are included
  • Fair pricing: you only book as much as you need
  • No time stress, since it’s valid for 60 days
  • Empire State Building and One World Observatory are included

Disadvantages of the Explorer Pass:

  • Hop-on Hop-off busses are only bookable as an attraction, but not part of the standard package

Our verdict on the New York Explorer Pass

The New York Explorer Pass is a good option for anyone who doesn’t want to visit countless sights and museums .

Through it’s simple pricing scheme , you can figure out very easily whether the pass is worth it for you. Almost all of the important sights are included in the pass, so you’ll be all set for your New York trip.

The Explorer Pass is very similar to the Sightseeing Flex Pass. The savings with each pass are often nearly the same.

Both passes are very good options. If you want to save every dollar you can, you should calculate exactly which pass is cheaper.

You can buy the Explorer Pass here

#4 New York City Pass

The New York City Pass is the smallest of the five New York passes , but it can still be worthwhile.

New York Citypass

What does the New York City Pass offer?

8 attractions are included in the City Pass, of which you can visit 5 .

Two of them are set. For the other three attractions, you have a choice between two options for each:

  • Empire State Building
  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Top of the Rock OR Guggenheim Museum
  • The Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island OR boat ride with the Circle Line
  • 9/11 Memorial and Museum OR Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

What does the New York City Pass cost?

The pricing scheme of the New York City Pass is very easy. There aren’t any price scales, like with the other passes. The pass simply costs 121 dollars .

After you visit the first attraction with the pass, you have 9 days to see the rest of the sights and museums.

Advantages of the City Pass:

  • Simple pricing
  • Many important sights are included
  • High flexibility because of the long validity period of 9 days
  • The only pass with which you can visit the Empire State Building twice (day and night)

Disadvantages of the City Pass:

  • No Hop-on Hop-off bus
  • One World Trade Center and the Museum of Modern Art are not included

Our verdict on the New York City Pass

The New York City Pass is an ideal choice for anyone who’s looking for a simple and uncomplicated pass and doesn’t want to busy themselves with countless attractions and options.

Because the attractions are more or less fixed and only a few possible variations exist, it’s relatively easy to decide whether the pass is of interest.

If you want to visit all 5 attractions, the City Pass is a good option. If one of the attractions doesn’t interest you, the pass is generally still a good choice. If two or more attractions don’t interest you, then the City Pass isn’t for you.

Differences of the New York passes

We’ve now introduced the different New York passes. Since that’s a lot of info to take in all at once, in this section, we’d like to sum up the significant differences and similarities of all the New York passes.

That way you’ll get a better impression of which New York pass you should buy and which ones aren’t worth it for you.

Difference #1: time-based or attraction-based

To start with, there are two types of New York passes:

  • Passes that are valid for a specific amount of time. In this time, you can visit all of the attractions included in the pass.
  • Passes that are only valid for a certain number of attractions.

Both types of passes have their advantages and disadvantages. You can see which pass works by which model in this summary:

Time-based passes:

  • New York All-Inclusive Pass (1 to 10 days)
  • New York Sightseeing Pass (1 to 10 days)

Attraction-based passes:

  • New York Sightseeing Flex Pass (2 to 12 attractions)
  • New York Explorer Pass (2 to 10 attractions)
  • New York City Pass (5 attractions)

The time-based passes are especially worth it if you want to see as many attractions as possible . The longer the validity of the pass, the cheaper it becomes per day.

Besides that, these passes are a good choice if the additional offers , such as bike rentals, city tours or boat rides, are important to you. In these cases, you usually get away cheaper with a time based pass.

Those passes where you decide on a fixed number of attractions are especially recommended if you only want to visit the most important sights in New York and want to remain as flexible as possible.

Difference #2: included attractions

The New York passes don’t all include the same sights and attractions. For most travelers, the most important difference is surely the tickets for the famous lookout points in New York.

If you’d like to see very specific museums or do specific activities, it’s worth checking beforehand whether these activities are included in each of the New York passes.

So that you don’t have to do the strenuous work of searching for all this information, we will show you which attractions are included in the passes in the following table. Alongside the must-sees, we’ve also included other very popular attractions, so you can get a good overview.

As you can see, the Sightseeing Pass is something like the all-around worry-free package. All of the important attractions are included here.

Difference #3: Hop-on Hop-off busses

A significant difference between the passes is the use of the Hop-on Hop-off busses. Many travelers really like to use this mode of transportation to explore a city like New York.

The busses go along a fixed route and generally stop at all points relevant to tourists. With a ticket for the busses, you can get on or off at any time , so you can conveniently get from one sight to the next.

What’s more, there’s an audio commentary on the busses. So you can use these busses either for a classic city tour, or really just to get from one attraction to the next.

There are two big providers of these bus tours in New York: Big Bus and Grayline. Both companies each offer two different routes through Manhattan. Grayline also operates a further line that brings you to the most important places in Brooklyn.

If you’d like to use these busses, then we suggest the New York Sightseeing Pass , the New York All-Inclusive Pass , and the New York Explorer Pass . All three offer the Big Bus Hop-On Hop-Off Tour with two different routes, valid for one day

The City Pass does not offer any Hop-on Hop-off busses.

Which New York Pass is suitable for whom?

Now we of course want to answer the question of all questions: which New York pass is the best?

Needless to say, we can’t give the ultimate answer here, since not every New York pass is the best option for every person.

So we’ve put together three different types of travelers and our recommendation for the best New York Pass for each type of traveler .

These are the types of travelers:

  • Those who want to visit as many ticketed attractions as possible
  • Those who quickly want to visit the most well known sights
  • Those who want to visit the most well known sights calmly

Traveler #1: as much as possible

Are you one of the travelers who wants to see as much as possible in New York? Then the time based New York passes are interesting for you.

A typical itinerary could look like this:

Empire State Building ($48) Top of the Rock ($44) One World Observatory ($45) Edge ($44) 9/11 Museum ($28) MoMA ($25) Guggenheim Museum ($25) Museum of Natural History ($23) Bicycle rentals in Central Park ($25) Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus tour ($60) Boat ride, for example with Circle Line ($35) 2 further attractions according to your interests (ca. $60) 2 guided tours ($70) Total price: $532

In total, that’s 15 attractions, which you can manage well over 7 days. For all of that, you’d have to spend around 530 dollars for individual tickets.

In the following table, you can see how much you’d save with one of the New York Passes.

Note : the New York City Pass isn’t made for this type of travel, since they both only include relatively few attractions. We’ve therefore not included it in this table.

If you want to see a ton of attractions in New York and also have enough time (in our example, 7 days), then the New York All-Incusive Pass is the best option for you.

The savings with the New York Explorer Pass and the New York Sightseeing Flex Pass is only a little lower, so it’s worth taking a look at the included attractions. Your own itinerary will probably look a little different than our example itinerary.

Traveler #2: quickly see the most important sights

If you’d like to visit as many attractions as possible in New York in as little time as possible, we’ve put together a small example itinerary that you can be done in three days .

If you’re really fast, you can probably even complete it in 2 days, but then it’d be really stressful. So we’d prefer to base it on 3 days.

For us, the following attractions are some of the highlights in New York:

Empire State Building ($48) Top of the Rock ($44) One World Observatory ($45) 9/11 Museum ($28) Two museums, for example Met, MoMA or Guggenheim ($50) Boat ride, for example with Circle Line ($35) Total price: 250 dollars

Optional: Bike tour through Central Park with a rental bike ($20) Optional: Hop-on Hop-off bus tour ($60) Total price with Hop-on Hop-off bus und bike rental: $330

In retail sales, you’d pay a total of 250 dollars for the most important sights if you don’t incude the Hop-on Hop-off busses and would rather explore Central Park by foot. If you’d like to use the busses and to go through Central Park on a bike, you’re up to 330 dollars.

Why isn’t the Statue of Liberty included? We find that the Statue of Liberty isn’t really worth it if you don’t have a lot of time in New York. The trip to the island is relatively time consuming. So we’d instead suggest a boat tour that also takes you very close to the statue. That’ll save time and is just as impressive.

In both of the following tables, we’ve listed how much you’d save for all passes – both with and without a bus ticket and a bike rental.

Savings without Hop-on Hop-off bus and bike rental:

Without the Hop-on Hop-off bus, the New York Explorer Pass , the New York City Pass and the New York Sightseeing Flex Pass are the best options.

Depending on which attractions are the most important to you, another one of the passes could be a good choice. The differences of savings aren’t so big here that we could make an ultimate recommendation.

Savings with Hop-on Hop-off bus and bike rental:

Note : The New York City Pass doesn’t offer the Hop-on Hop-off tours or bike rentals. We therefore haven’t factored it into this table.

If you’d also like to use the Hop-on Hop-off buses and would like to rent a bike in Central Park, then either the New York All-Inclusive Pass or the New York Explorer Pass  is the cheapest option.

Traveler #3: see the most important sights without any stress

We like to see all of the important attractions in a city, but we don’t like to do it in a rush.

We also sometimes enjoy just wandering through the streets and neighborhoods of a city, instead of rushing from one attraction to the next. Just the same, we of course want to see the major highlights.

So we would rather distribute the attractions mentioned above across a longer time period , for example, 5 or 7 days.

For this scenario, we’ve also created two tables in which we show you which pass is the best solution for you then.

Savings without Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus and bike rental:

With the unhurried options, the savings aren’t so huge , as with the fully packed 3 day itinerary. The City Pass , the Sightseeing Flex Pass and the Explorer Pass are very close to one another here.

Savings with Hop-on-Hop-off-Bus and bike rental:

Note : The City Pass isn’t taken into account in this table, since it doesn’t include buses or bicycles.

Because the Hop-on Hop-off tours and bike rentals are relatively expensive, the savings are higher again. The New York Explorer Pass or the Sightseeing Flex Pass are once again the most lucrative here. You can also save a couple of bucks with the New York All-Inclusive Pass .

In our example, the Explorer Pass was a little better than the Sightseeing Pass.

New York without a pass

Does there absolutely have to be a New York Pass? Of course not! You can also discover the best attractions in New York without a pass.

If you don’t plan on visiting a lot of ticketed attractions , we’d suggest that you do it without a pass. You can also jump the line for the ticket desk at most attractions, even without a pass, by booking your tickets online ahead of time. We’d definitely recommend doing that.

You do always save some money with the passes, but with just a few sights, the savings usually aren’t so high. It’s then better to stay flexible and go without a pass.

In the following table, we’ve shown you an overview of which ticket you can buy beforehand online, also without using any of the passes.

Frequently asked questions

To conclude, we’ve put together the answers to frequent questions about the different passes for you.

Do you have another question? Then just write a comment to us below and you’ll receive an answer from us very shortly.

Do the New York passes also work for the subway?

In many cities, you can also use the City Cards for public transportation. Unfortunately, that’s not the case in New York and actually not with any of the providers.

To use the subway in New York and public busses, you have to buy a separate metrocard.

Are there reduced passes for kids?

Yes, for all of the New York passes that were introduced here, there’s also a reduced option for kids. Little kids (usually up to 3 years) are usually free.

How do I get my pass after ordering it?

You used to have to pick up the passes in New York, which was time consuming. Luckily that isn’t so anymore. Nowadays, you receive your pass by email directly after your purchase.

You can then just show your pass on your smartphone at each attraction. If you don’t have a smartphone, you can also easily print out the passes.

Are the passes cheaper on site?

No, you always get the best prices online.

Can I visit individual sights more than once with the pass?

No, unfortunately that’s not possible. You can only visit each attraction once with your pass.

Only exception : with the City Pass, you can go up the Empire State Building twice in one day, once in the morning and once in the evening.

We drew a detailed conclusion at the very beginning of our New York pass comparison. So here’s just a very brief summary again:

Cheapest pass with as many attractions as possible:

New York All-Inclusive Pass New York Explorer Pass Sightseeing Flex Pass

Cheapest pass for the most important sights in 3 days:

New York All-Inclusive Pass New York Explorer Pass New York City Pass

Cheapest pass for a relaxed New York itinerary:

Which New York Attraction Pass is Best?

new york day trip pass

This post reviews and explains the various options for NYC tourist discount passes that are available to you and to help you decide which (if any) are right for you. ( en español ) ( auf Deutsch )

There are so many tourist discount passes available in NYC that it can be difficult to decide which, if any, are good options for you.

Therefore, we recommend first deciding on what you want to do and will have the time for, before choosing which pass you would like.

In other words, don’t necessarily let any tourist pass decide for you where to go, but certainly, get ideas from what is offered.

  • BEFORE YOU BUY
  • ALL-INCLUSIVE
  • SET # OF ATTRACTION
  • PRESET PACKAGES
  • BUS TOUR COMBO PACKAGES

As local walking tour guides, we know first-hand the confusion that confronts visitors to New York who are looking to save some money on attractions and tours.

And, in addition to our experiences, we also incorporated some of the tips from members of our NYC Travel Tips Facebook group to craft this post.

new york day trip pass

There are several different passes to choose from, and we have broken them down by type.

Each pass has its own benefits and is slightly different from the others.

One of the biggest differences is which attractions and tours are included, but all passes (except CityPass) usually include the following:

  • A Hop-on-Hop-off Bus Tour
  • Statue of Liberty & Ellis Island
  • Top of the Rock or Empire State Building or One World Observatory
  • 9/11 Memorial & Museum
  • American Museum of Natural History
  • Museum of Modern Art
  • Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
  • Madame Tussauds

If these are places you want to visit, then one of the tourist passes below is probably a no-brainer.

And remember, there are many more attractions and tours included in each pass.

Lastly, we have special discount codes for several of these passes giving you anywhere from 10-20% off the full price of these passes, so look out for those below.

An all-inclusive pass allows you to enjoy as many attractions, tours, and experiences as you can within a set number of days for one set price (think of an all-you-can-eat buffet).

New York Pass vs. Sightseeing Pass

These are the most expensive types, but you could potentially save the most amount of money with these passes.

NOTE:  both passes offer our guests 20% or more on most of their options.

Then there are passes that allow you to choose a set # of attractions and tours .

These passes usually give you the option to choose, 3, 5, or more options from a large pool of options.

Explorer Pass vs Sightseeing Flex Pass

These are a bit cheaper than all-inclusive and allow for flexibility, but your savings potential is lower.

Another option is prepackaged passes (think set menu).  These are the most certain of all of the passes.

Lastly, there are numerous hop-on-hop-off bus tour companies that offer their own combo deals .

Also, check out our section on how to save without a pass for more options and tips.

IMPORTANT:  Because each pass's offerings change regularly, be sure to confirm what is and is not offered before purchasing.

ALL-INCLUSIVE PASSES

Currently, there are 2 all-inclusive passes available in New York City: the Sightseeing Pass and the  New York Pass .

These passes are like an all-you-can-eat menu.

You pay one flat price for the pass which is sold in increments of  1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, and 10 days.

With your pass, you can visit as many attractions as you want in the number of days you select.

So, the more efficiently you are visiting attractions and taking tours, the less you will pay per ticket.

You also get discounts at a variety of shops, restaurants, and other attractions not included in the pass.

These passes come with skip-the-line privileges for many attractions.

Both of these passes have a long list of attractions, tours, and museums included, though the lists are not identical.

Be sure to always look over the list of attractions carefully before choosing a pass to purchase.

We've provided the average daily cost of each multiple attraction so that you can see how much of a deal you will get each day.

Both passes have sample itineraries to demonstrate how you could maximize your savings as well.

THE SIGHTSEEING PASS

Sightseeing Pass NYC

The Sightseeing Pass is a credit card-like pass that you can use to visit over 100 attractions, walking tours, cruises, bus tours, and more.

You can choose 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 10 days.

A big highlight of this pass is that it is the only all-inclusive pass that includes One World Observatory as an attraction.

The New York Sightseeing Pass also includes admission to the Empire State Building , Top of the Rock , and the newest observation deck called Edge .

If you prefer a pass that is based on the number of attractions you can see instead of the number of days, they also offer a pass based on the # of attractions , not days.

They also offer sample itineraries to help with your planning.

Another perk is that the pass includes a meal (lunch or dinner) and other discounts at popular NYC restaurants and shops.

For more information, click here .

After you make your purchase, you will receive an email confirmation with a link to your voucher.

You can either print it out or, even more conveniently for those with a smartphone, take a screenshot of the QR code and use your mobile phone as your ticket!

If you prefer to have your pass mailed to you, they can do this as well.

Some Things To Know About New York Pass

  • The pass will be activated as soon as you use it at the first attraction
  • The number of days that the pass is good for refers to calendar dates, not 24-hour periods.  For example, if you use the 1-day pass for the first attraction at 1 p.m., it still expires at midnight that night.
  • It can only be used once at each attraction, so it cannot be shared between two people.
  • Line-jumping privileges at 15 of the offered attractions.  For some attractions, such as Top of the Rock, this can save you quite a bit of time.
  • The New York Pass includes over 100 attractions .
  • Money-back guaranteed insurance is an extra 4.5% of the cost of the pass.

Benefits of the New York Pass

It is nice to have different options for time increments.

The New York Pass also includes a pretty staggering array of attractions that can be used in any order, including some more off-the-beaten-path options.

If your trip allows enough time for you to take advantage of the New York Pass it can save you quite a bit of money.

Is the New York Pass Worth the Money?

That depends on how long your trip is and what you are interested in seeing.

We included the average daily prices above, so you really just have to add up the full retail prices of each attraction to see if you get your money's worth.

This pass includes so many attractions and tours, but you need to have the time to do a lot in order to make buying it worthwhile.

New York Pass provides sample itineraries to help plan out your days.

Generally speaking, the 3, 5, and 7-day passes are better deals. That gives you more time to really take advantage of the offerings.

The one and two-day passes are a little pricey considering what you could realistically squeeze into your trip.

Also, for families traveling with children, the savings are significantly better for the 5 and 7-day child passes.

For more details or to purchase this pass, click here .

This pass is a good deal for avid museum-goers with several days in New York.

While the American Museum of Natural History is a suggested donation, private museums like the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Guggenheim have fixed admissions that can really add up.

These museums are included with the New York Pass, as well as a wide variety of others.

If you only have one or two days in New York and think that you can reasonably see enough attractions to make the pass worthwhile, then by all means: go for it!

Then select one or two attractions to pay admission for, like the Empire State Building. It will keep your cost lower than a 1 Day New York Pass.

Likewise, GoCity offers you the opportunity to save 20% a la carte style with a free money-back guarantee.

While the New York Pass includes some walking tours, you can maximize your savings by using the pass for attractions (to which there are no pay-what-you-wish options available!) and then take one of our many walking tours (see our calendar for dates/times.)

Differences between the Sightseeing Pass and the New York Pass

  • The Sightseeing Pass offers 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 10-day passes. The New York Pass has only 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, or 10-day passes. They do not have a 6-day pass.
  • The Sightseeing Pass includes 26 museums whereas the New York Pass includes 30.
  • If you love shopping for discounts, the Sightseeing Pass includes a Super Saver Ticket to  Woodbury Common Outlets  as one of its options. The New York Pass does not.

NEW YORK TURBO PASS

new york day trip pass

This is another popular all-inclusive tourist pass in New York, and it works almost exactly the same way as all the other options we have listed.

Passes can be purchased for 1, 2, 3, 5, or 7 days at a time.

Although a lot of the activities included are very similar to those offered by their competitors, there are a few differences worth noting.

Perhaps the most notable service that is exclusive to the Turbo Pass is a free airport transfer from LaGuardia, Newark, or JFK.

No other pass includes this, so if you need a transfer from the airport to your hotel, this is an excellent option.

Here are a few of the other notable activities and attractions included with this pass:

  • Radio City Music Hall Stage Door Tour
  • Metropolitan Museum of Art
  • St. Patrick's Cathedral Tour
  • RIB New York Speed Boat
  • Hop-on Hop-off Bus Tour
  • One World Observatory
  • Central Park Zoo
  • Top of the Rock
  • NY Aquarium

Here are the prices for each length of pass. We'll include a breakdown of prices per day as well.

  • 1-Day Pass: $99/Adults | $89/Children (3-11)
  • Price per day: $84.50/Adults | $67/Children
  • Price per day: $66.33/Adults | $44.66/Children
  • Price per day: $51.80/Adults | $26.80/Children
  • Price per day: $42.71/Adults | $19.14/Children

Purchase the New York Turbo Pass or learn more .

Things to Note

As you may have noticed, the prices for children's passes stop increasing after the second day.

As such, this is arguably the most affordable all-inclusive pass in New York for families.

Prices per day are a bit more expensive for adults than you'll find with some of their competitors, but you won't beat the price of less than $20 a day for children!

Another nice thing about this pass is that it includes admission to attractions and services that aren't always provided by their competitors, such as the RIB New York Speed Boat and the free airport transfer.

These are just a few things you might want to consider when trying to decide which pass is right for your needs.

PICK A NUMBER OF ATTRACTIONS (from 2 to 12)

This kind of pass is good for someone who already knows (or has a good idea) what he or she wants to see and the number of days he or she will have in NYC.

Rather than being based on the number of days, these passes are based on the number of attractions you want to see.

By purchasing a pass rather than a ticket to each attraction individually, you can save up to 50% on the retail cost of each attraction.

Savings are dependent on the number of attractions you choose.  The more you choose, the more you will save.

You are not obligated to choose which attractions you will go to in advance or what days you will visit them.

So these passes offer flexibility if you like to improvise. At many attractions, you will get fast-track entry and get to skip the line.

We included the average price per attraction in red so that you could more easily calculate your potential savings over the retail price.

Be careful - if the retail price of your choices totals less than the average, then you will lose money.

So be sure to read our breakdown of pricing  to see if it is worth buying a pass or not.

Currently, there are 3 "pick" passes which we describe in detail below.

After we describe these passes below, we include a section with advice about which of these passes may be best for you.

THE SIGHTSEEING FLEXPASS

You can save up to 50% by using the FlexPass instead of buying entry to each attraction individually.

You also get fast-track entry to several attractions.

They also offer an all-inclusive pass , as well as  sample itineraries to help with your planning.

How to Purchase

  • This pass can only be purchased online at their website .
  • When you purchase, you will have to choose a date - but you will not be locked into starting your pass on that date. You have a year from the date of purchase to begin using your pass.
  • After you make your purchase, you will receive an email confirmation with a link to your voucher.  To redeem the voucher once in New York, bring a printed copy and valid identification at any one of their 11 Visitor Centers. If you can't print the voucher, you can also show the voucher on your mobile device.
  • If you prefer to have your pass mailed to you, they can do this as well.
  • Once you’ve redeemed your voucher, you are ready to go!

Good to know

• The pass is valid for 7 days from activation. Your pass is activated the moment it is scanned for admission at your first attraction, bus tour, or restaurant. • Once you use the pass at any attraction choice you must wait one hour before you can visit another attraction. • You'll have a full year from the day you purchase your passes to receive a full refund, as long as they are unused. However, the passes are non-refundable once they're activated.

NOTE: The same additional discounts that are offered on their all-inclusive pass are also available on the Flex pass. Save up to an extra 35% on various attractions, activities, and services around NYC!

For more breakdowns on this pass, read our post, Is the Sightseeing Flex Pass Worth It ?

GO CITY NEW YORK EXPLORER PASS

This pass, like the New York Pass, is a mobile pass that can be used as a ticket for participating tours and attractions.

The Go City New York Explorer Pass does not charge per day.

Rather, you select a fixed number of attractions (3, 4, 5, 7, 10) that you want to visit during your time in NYC.

You have over 90 attractions and tours to choose from.

They provide sample itineraries to help you plan how to get the most out of your pass.

Go City offers a 100% money-back guarantee for unused passes up to 1 year after your intended travel date, no questions asked, and no insurance to purchase.

  • [$36/attraction/adult and $28.50/attraction/child]
  • [$33/attraction/adult and $26/attraction/child]
  • [$33.75/attraction/adult and $24.75/attraction/child]
  • [$30.80/attraction/adult and $24/attraction/child]
  • [$29.50/attraction/adult and $22.50/attraction/child]
  • [$28.28/attraction/adult and $21.57/attraction/child]
  • [$23.50/attraction/adult and $19.30/attraction/child]
  • More information or to book .

You can choose from a list of 90 options . You do not need to decide in advance what you want to see in order to buy the Go City New York Explorer Pass.

  • The pass will be activated with your first use.
  • The Explorer Pass is valid for 30 days, so it is a nice option for those staying awhile.
  • You can skip ticket lines at certain attractions with this pass.
  • This pass is also well-reviewed.

Is the Explorer Pass Right For You?

Both of the passes offered by Go City are good for 30 days, so if you have a longer stay in NYC and want to see things at a leisurely pace, this could be a good option for you.

Because this pass offers a set number of attractions, it is probably better for those who have a pretty good idea of what they want to see already.

new york day trip pass

While you don’t run a big risk with this pass of paying for more things than you can see, you do want to be reasonably sure that your selected number of attractions will be enough.

Also, because you pay based on the number of things you do rather than different attractions’ individual prices, like with the Go Select Pass, you should look at the actual prices of the things you are most interested in seeing.

For example, if you buy a 3 Attraction Pass for $79.99 and then choose to go to the Empire State Building ($38), the Statue of Liberty Ferry ($18), and the Museum of the City of New York ($18), then you are actually paying more for the pass than you would to just purchase individual entry at each place.

So the Go City New York Explorer Pass can be a good deal for the right traveler, but it does require a little advanced research.

For more breakdowns on this pass, read our post on the Go City New York Explorer Pass .

WHICH “PICK” PASS IS BETTER FOR ME?

All of these passes are pretty similar. Here are a few notable differences:

  • The Flex Pass includes One World Observatory as an attraction but the Go City New York Explorer Pass does not.
  • The Flex Pass actually includes admission to every major observation deck in New York City, including the Empire State Building, Top of the Rock, and Edge.
  • The Flex Pass has a much larger list of attractions to choose from (about 90) whereas the Go City New York Explorer Pass has around half that many.

As with all passes, make sure the attractions you want to see are included in the pass you purchase!

PREPACKAGED PASSES

These types of packages save you money by bundling a certain number of attractions into one purchase with a set price.

However, you have less control over what attractions are included in your package.

Fortunately, these packages do include the attractions that most people want to see and in some cases, you are offered choices.

CityPASS New York

CityPASS is a digital pass that grants you admission into 5 top attractions in New York City.

new york day trip pass

CityPASS prices and features:

  • $129 for adults and $109 for children (ages 6-17)
  • Good for 9 consecutive days (from the first day of use).
  • Purchase online or in-person at any attraction included.
  • Most of the tickets will also allow you to jump the line at attractions (which can be helpful in crowded New York!)

Attractions included with CityPASS :

  • Empire State Building  with an audio guide.  Admission includes two visits, so you can go once during the day and again at night if you’d like.
  • The American Museum of Natural History
  • 9/11 Memorial & Museum  OR   Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum
  • Top of the Rock Observation Deck OR the Guggenheim Museum
  • Statue of Liberty / Ellis Island Ferry OR a Circle Line Cruise

The projected savings with an adult CityPASS is $87 (if you paid full price for all 5 attractions).

Benefits of the CityPASS

The CityPASS is relatively flexible - you have 9 days to visit the included attractions in whatever order and at whatever times you would like.

The line bypass privileges can save you quite a bit of time for other sightseeing.

This pass would grant you entry into many NYC “highlights,” which you could then supplement with our walking tours (see our calendar for dates/times).

If the price of the pass works for your budget and you have several days in New York it could be a good option for you.

To purchase, click  New York CityPASS .

Things to Consider Before Buying

The American Museum of Natural History actually does not have a fixed admission.

The prices listed are suggested donations, so you can actually pay anything you like that works in your budget.

Also, the Museum of Modern Art offers “Free Fridays” from 5:30 p.m. to 9 pm, so if your trip includes a Friday, you could take advantage of that.

This means that half of the attractions included with CityPASS could be free or very low cost.

For more breakdowns on this pass, read our post on the NYC CityPASS .

Big Apple Pass

new york day trip pass

The Big Apple Pass pass is a very basic pass but if used wisely can save you time and money.

This pass is best for people who are planning to visit a few attractions and like the convenience of having your pass before you even arrive in New York City.

Unlike the CityPass booklet, this pass includes airport transfers.

Big Apple Pass prices and features:

  • Adult/Teen (17+): $79
  • Senior (62+): $77
  • Youth (12-16): $68
  • Child (6-11): $54
  • Child (2-5): $21

Attractions and Deals Included:

  • Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island
  • Empire State Building
  • City Tour of New York
  • 10% discount on many other of New York's top attractions (click here for the list)

How it works:

Because this pass includes a ride from your airport, you can purchase this pass only after you have booked your flight.

Once you have done that, go to the Big Apple Pass website .

During the purchase process, you will be asked to enter your arrival date, airport, and flight number.

After you complete your purchase, you will receive an email that serves as your pass (you can also use your smartphone as your pass).

You will also get the code to receive a 20% discount on “skip the line” tickets you purchase online.

For a list of which attractions accept this 20% discount code, click here .

Benefits of buying this pass:

First off, if you compare the total regular cost of all the items included in the price of the pass, you will be saving over 30%!

The pass includes two attractions that are likely on your list of “must-sees” -- the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building.

Also, if you take advantage of the 10% discount code for the attractions included, you can save even more.

For example, if you visit two top museums in NYC, the Guggenheim, and the Museum of Modern Art, (each a steep $25 entry) you will save $7.50 per person.

Before buying this pass

Consider that you can’t buy this pass until you have booked your flight as you will need to provide your arrival information.

Also, keep in mind that a pass is not worth the money if it includes attractions you aren't interested in seeing.

BUS TOUR COMBO PACKAGES

Many companies offer discounted rates on bus tours if they are purchased in combination with a boat or helicopter tour.

For more information on all the combo packages available, check out our post on New York bus tours .

CITY SIGHTS COMBO PACKAGES

If you're not interested in all of the activities typically included with a tourist pass, take a look at some of these combo deals instead.

Whether you want to visit the Empire State Building or see the 9/11 Memorial and Museum, there are several opportunities to cut touring costs in New York City.

As a matter of fact, you could save even more by picking the package that best fits your interest rather than paying upfront for a plethora of different attractions.

Here are the activities and sites included as options with these packages:

  • Empire State Building Observatory
  • Intrepid, Sea, Air, and Space Museum
  • Guggenheim Museum
  • Circle Line Cruise
  • Fotografiska NY
  • St. Patrick's Cathedral
  • Central Park Bike Rental

UPDATE: As of September 2022, this combo package is available with either 1 or 3 attractions.

In other words, no matter how long your bus tour ticket is valid, you'll be able to choose up to 3 additional activities to enjoy in addition to the tour. Each hop-on hop-off bus tour is valid for both the uptown to downtown loops.

Here are the new prices:

CREATE YOUR OWN TOURIST PASS

There are a couple of considerations that you should make before you purchase any tourist pass, considerations that may lead you to create your own pass.

We explain below.

Inflated Prices

Keep in mind that the retail prices for each attraction or tour are usually inflated in order to cover the commissions that these attractions pay to the tourist pass companies.

With that said, you still stand to save money, and having everything you want in one place is also peace of mind.

There are almost always discounts or packages available that lower the retail cost (we explain below).

Calculate Cost Per Hour

You need to calculate the cost per hour of each tour and attraction to make sure that you are getting the best value possible.

You should make your calculations based on the actual best price and not the retail price (we explain in the examples below).

Be Realistic

Likewise, the suggested amount of time for each attraction and tour is usually the best-case scenario.

You may very well find that you need more time than is indicated and you may experience fewer options than you planned .

You need to calculate travel time between attractions as well as time for lunch and dinner.

When you have highly rated pay-what-you-wish tour options like  Free Tours by Foot , you don't need to consider tours available in passes.

To show you what we mean, here is a breakdown of the average time you can expect to spend at various popular attractions in New York City:

Example #1 - Top of the Rock

All passes suggest a duration of 1-2 hours, but you should count on 2, even with skip-the-line privileges, particularly in high tourist season.

The retail price is $41/adult. Based on this, you appear to be getting $20/hr/adult value.

However, if you're only interested in the view, you could just visit Bar 65 on the 65th floor (just 2 floors below Top of the Rock) and grab a drink there.

They have a dress code of business casual, but at $20 a drink, it could actually be cheaper than the observation deck.

There are also combo packages available such as the Rock Pass, which also has tickets to the Rockefeller Center Tour. You might also want to consider a bus tour combo from City Sightseeing.

For more details on how to save money on tickets, check our post on Top of the Rock discounts .

Therefore, ignore the stated retail prices and calculate the best prices from discounts.

Example #2 - Statue of Liberty

This attraction is one of the worst choices to pick on a tourist pass.

First of all, it takes at least 4 hours (we suggest 5 hours) to get through security, visit both the Statue and Ellis Island, and return.

Secondly, the tourist passes only offer access to Liberty Island and not to the Statue's pedestal or crown.

At $23.50/adult, this is under $5/hr/adult. You are better off purchasing tickets on your own.

Before I start diving deeper into the 3-Day New York Pass itinerary, here’s an overview of the NYC sightseeing attractions, museums, and tours, that will be a part of your 3 day NYC pass schedule.

Day – Hop-On Hop-Off, Food Tour & Top of the Rocks

  • Times Square
  • Hop-On Hop-Off Downtown
  • Statue of Liberty Sightseeing Cruise
  • Bryant Park & New York Public Library
  • Food on Foot Tour

Top of the Rock & Rockefeller Center Tour

Times square & hop-on hop-off bus tour.

3 day NYC pass

We start off the day right with a visit to the famous Times Square in Midtown Manhattan . They call it the crossroads of the world and it for sure is one of the highlights that you have to experience when traveling to New York City.

Right after it’s time to hop on one of the NYC sightseeing busses near Times Square and start your 3-Day New York Pass. With the New York Pass, you can enjoy the Hop on Hop off Busses for an entire day. It’s a great way to get around the city and explore as much as possible during the bus tour at the same time.

Walk your way over from Times Square to the Big Bus Stop on the corner of  W 42nd Street and Broadway .

The buses leave every 15 minutes from 8 AM in the morning until 6 PM at night.

Pick the Downtown Route.

If you want you can stay on the bus until you’re back to the starting location, or you can hop on and off as much as you want to.

These are a few NYC sightseeing attractions that you will get to see along the way:

5th Avenue Midtown, Times Square, Empire State Building, Flatiron District, Union Square, Greenwich Village, NoHo, SoHo , Chinatown, Brooklyn Bridge, World Trade Center, Battery Park, South Street Seaport, Lower East Side, United Nations Building, Rockefeller Center and many more.

Great option: Statue of Liberty Cruise, Statue of Liberty Museum &  Ellis Island Immigration Museum

If you’re interested in Miss Liberty, get off in Lower Manhattan during the bus tour and use your New York Pass for a cruise to the Statue of Liberty. Enjoy the famous landmark, amazing city views and learn so much about her history at the new Statue of Liberty Museum on Liberty Island. Take the ferry to Ellis Island for a visit to the exciting Ellis Island Immigration Museum.

The Hop on Hop off Bus will take you back from Lower Manhattan to Midtown after you are done with your visit to the Statue of Liberty.

Bryant Park & Food on Foot Tour

3-day-new-york-pass

Back to your starting point near Times Square, make your way over to Bryant Park . The popular park in the middle of the hustle and bustle of Midtown Manhattan is a great location to relax and feel like a local for a minute. New Yorkers come here for their lunch break, a date or just to read a book.

Right next to the park there’s the New York Public Library and you can see the Chrysler Building as well as the Empire State Building if you look up to the sky. After a few moments of relaxation, it is time for the Food on Foot Tour. In order to sign up for the tour, you have to secure your spot on the Food on Foot Tour website beforehand. We really love the  Midtown Mix Food Tour , which starts right at  Penn Station (20 minutes walk from Bryant Park).

During the tour, a local guide takes you behind the scenes of the best food spots in Midtown Manhattan and you’re able to taste the New Yorker cuisine at 5-6 different spots. The tour ends at Times Square.

3-Day New York Pass

With a full stomach, we are heading further Uptown to Rockefeller Center to finish up the day with one of the best views in Manhattan at Top of the Rock.

Our advice : If you don’t feel like walking, the Big Bus will take you there as well.

Great option: Rockefeller Center Tour

If there’s enough time before sunset, check out Rockefeller Center during a free tour with the 3-Day New York Pass. Peak behind the scenes of the famous New Yorker building. Tours are being held every day, every 30 minutes from 10:00 AM to 7:30 PM expect 6:00 PM and 6:30 PM.

Top of the Rock Observation Deck

Try to visit the Top of the Rock Observation Deck during sunset to take advantage of the best light, views, and photos. It’s a magical time to watch the sunset over the Manhattan skyline and something you should get to see when visiting the Big Apple.

Enjoy the amazing sunset at Top of the Rock

Top of the Rock offers stunning views of Central Park, the Empire State Building and the city and will be the perfect ending of your first day of our 3-day New York itinerary with the New York Pass.

Day 2 – Boat tour, 9/11 Memorial & The Ride

  • Landmarks Cruise
  • Ground Zero
  • 9/11 Memorial Museum

Sightseeing Cruise

3 day NYC passes

After unforgettable views of the city during sunset last night, day 2 begins with a fun sightseeing cruise on the Hudson River . Included in your 3-Day New York Pass experience this boat tour is one of our favorite things to do when it’s nice out.

The cruise starts at  Pier 83 on the West Side Highway.

You will enjoy this sightseeing tour so much because you will get so see so much that NYC has to offer. From the impressive Manhattan skyline with the newly developed Hudson Yards , the Vessel, the Statue of Liberty, Brooklyn Bridge, Governors Island and much more.

Visit a museum in NYC: The 9/11 Memorial Museum & MoMa

The 9/11 Memorial Museum is one of the attractions in Lower Manhattan

After checking many main NYC attractions off your list already, it is time for a visit to the museum. You’ll have a lot of options with the New York Pass but we really want to express our recommendations for two excellent museums in the city.

First of all, the 9/11 Memorial Museum near One World Trade Center is one of a kind and even though it is a deeply emotional and sad experience, it is so worth going. You can pay your tribute to the endless victims of September 11, 2001, learn more about how it was like to be in New York on that day back in 2001 and most importantly find out more about the victims, and how the city was rebuilt after these tragic events.

For the lovers of art and design, make your way over to Midtown Manhattan to visit the just recently renovated Museum of Modern Arts . A lot has changed at the MoMA after the reopening in 2019 and you should definitely check it out.

If you can’t get enough, the 3-Day New York Pass offers more museum opportunities that you can benefit from on day 3. One of my personal favorites is the Metropolitan Museum of Art near Central Park or the Museum of Natural History . They are all included in your New York Pass.

Day 3 – Empire State Building, Central Park & Sailing tour

Empire state building.

  • Central Park Bike Tour
  • Met / Guggenheim / Madame Tussauds
  • Sailing in New York

3 days NYC passes

Your third and last day in New York starts off with a visit to the famous Empire State Building . It’s New York City’s landmark and should be on your list when you’re visiting New York City. Try and be there as early as 8:00 AM to skip the crowds and have the Empire almost to yourself.

Central Park Bikes

3-Day New York Pass

Enjoy the calmness of Central Park. Rent a bike and ride a loop around the park. With your 3-Day New York Pass, you can either join a guided bike tour or rent your bikes for free and explore the park on your own.

We always recommend guided tours since you’re getting more of the inside scoop and history background of the park. But you will also have a lot of fun on your own. It’s really up to you and your own preference. For more information about Central Park read our full guide.

Madame Tussauds

3 day NYC pass

Now you have the choice between many of the museums that are also included in the New York Pass. As I mentioned earlier, if you have visited the MoMA, how about the Met or the Guggenheim Museum?

Or if you don’t feel too artsy, have some fun at Madame Tussauds in Midtown. I’m personally not the biggest fan of this attraction, but it is an option and I know, a lot of New York City visitors have it on their to-do-list.

Sailing to the Statue of Liberty

3 days nyc passes

In case you’re leaving the city the next day, you can make the most of your last night in town with your 3-Day New York Pass. To experience something really special, hop on a sailing boat to the Statue of Liberty at night.

Please note that you have to make a reservation on the website of the New York Pass. Both sailing trips that are available only run between April and October. If you happen to be there on a Friday or Saturday, from the 31st of May until the 7th of September there is a night sailing tour at 9:15 PM. Get to see the NYC skyline at night. A scenery you’ll never forget.

With this 3-Day New York Pass itinerary, you’re ready to explore New York City and make the most of the travel pass and its savings. Save time, save money and save big time on stress to spend everything you save on having an even better time in New York City with the New York Pass. We can’t wait to hear your feedback.

new york day trip pass

New York offers attractions and visits like no other cities in the world. Of course, this is a great opportunity for tourists but this might be an issue for your wallet! Luckily, everything is taking care of with the New York CityPASS . It allows you to enjoy a number of attractions while saving money! Let me explain: the New York CityPASS grants you access to the best attractions in New York at a very attractive flat rate (if you add each individual visit bought separately).

 RATES CHANGE

Starting March 1, 2024, the New York CityPASS will be $146/adult and $124/child, which is a increase of $8 for adults and $6 for children. In the article, I left the info with the current price and the 6 activities because until February 29th included, it is possible to buy the NY CityPASS at the current price with its 6 activities and it will work until the expiration date of the pass.

The New York City Pass

In one word, the New York City Pass , offers a saving of more than 40% on 6 of the 8 most popular attractions in New York!

The pass is valid dor 9 days starting on the first day of use. In other words, even if you buy it weeks in advance, the pass will expire 9 days after its first use.

You can also opt for a mobile ticket. After purchasing your pass, you will receive an e-mail containing a mobile ticket with a barcode. Then you simply present it on your smartphone to visit the attractions. You can choose to print the e-ticket too. Below is an example of mobile tickets:

new york day trip pass

The best tip remains in the fact that in most attractions, waiting lines are specifically reserved for visitors holding passes, a good way to reduce your waiting time. By the way, with a New York CityPASS you can book in advance a timed ticket for the Top of the Rock !

Here are 9 attractions (choice of 3) allowing you access with a pass:

empire state building city pass

The Empire State Building

Perched above the city at 1000 feet (320 meters), the 86th floor observatory offers a breathtaking view from its glass wing at the top of the building. CityPass offers an extra bonus visit the same day visit in the evening at 10 pm during closing time. You can actually admire New York during the day and also at night with bright lights.

met city pass

The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art)

The Met can be compared to the Louvre made in New York, it’s without a doubt one of the biggest and most beautiful museum in the world! From splendid Egyptian artifacts to the spectacular American aisle, the world of art is waiting for you in one of the most visited attractions in New York. A must see!

american museum natural history city pass

The American Museum of Natural History

The Guggenheim Museum

A modern architecture masterpiece from Franck Lloyd the Guggenheim welcomes some of the most beautiful collections of the 20th century modern art. The magnificent snail Guggenheim structure gives you the impression that you keep visiting the same gallery without moving places, thus you can never get lost!

top of the rock city pass

The Top of the Rock

Even if the observatory isn’t as high as the Empire State Building, you have the advantage to discover an amazing view on the latest but especially on Central Park and Midtown. Besides, the parapets are built up to the hips, as a result the view is unobstructed (no windows or iron bars) and very enjoyable.

circle line cruise city pass

intrepid sea air space city pass

Intrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum

The aircraft carrier USS Intrepid is a museum located on Pier 86 along the Hudson River displaying planes like F16, helicopters, a Concorde and even a spaceship. There’s a lot of activities to better understand the American Air & Sea as well as the history of the American space conquest. You’ll also enjoy a stunning view of New York City!

Regarding the choice of attractions you may have a hard time deciding if you want to enjoy all these attractions (highly recommended), or want to use the pass for the most expensive attractions (hence the cruise and the Top of the Rock), and buy the others separately to save money.

The New York City Pass is priced at $132 for adults and $108 for kids aged between 6 and 17 years old.

For kids under 5, I do not recommend buying a pass since entrances are free for 5 out of 9 attractions, just like shown below:

American Natural History Museum1 year old and lessTop of the Rock5 years old and lessLiberty & Ellis Island3 years old and lessIntrepid Sea, Air & Space Museum2 years old and less

Note that if you have a 10 years old child, you might want to ask yourself if he really needs a pass since he’s eligible to enter for free at 3 main museums. It depends on which attraction you are picking, on the other hand, if you choose to not visit those 3 museums then you might want to check if it’s worth purchasing a pass or not. Check my article on the subject: Frequently asked questions for stressed out parents before traveling to New York 😉

The New York CityPASS in a chart

What you should remember:

Note: the validity is activated starting on the first day of use of the pass.

Why should you pick the New York CityPASS ?

Keep in mind that your traveler profile (very active or mellow) and the length of your stay are determining factors.

Three reasons to choose the New York City Pass :

This is your first time in New York: The New York City Pass is the best option for a first trip in NY since it allows you to gain access to the main attractions in the city, the must see. The pass includes only 8 attractions (choice of 2) but there are part of the most spectacular so be prepared to be blown away!

Your trip lasts between 3 and 8 days and you want to take it easy: Knowing that the New York City Pass covers the length of your entire trip so you’ll have no problem using your pass at your own pace and enjoy all the attractions offered. If not, you can always buy one or two attractions separately.

Your budget is tight: Yes, on paper, the savings earned on both passes are similar, however, the New York City Pass remains more affordable.

As you can see, the choice essentially depends on your expectations and the length of your stay.

The New York City Pass is an excellent option for a first trip, besides its validity is a real asset even if the number of attractions is limited…

Purchase your pass

I strongly recommend ordering your pass on Internet since it’s where you’ll find very attractive rates. With the exception of the Top of the Rock, you don’t have to book the activities included in the New York CityPASS. My advice is to arrive as early as you can to avoid large crowds.

Click on the buttons below to book your pass:

Now you understand that for a first trip in New York, the New York CityPASS is a great choice! Economical, valid for up to 9 days, the pass offers excellent attractions where you can fully enjoy your trip. However, if this is not your first trip and/or you are an avid visitor another kind of pass might be more suitable for you with guaranteed satisfaction! As a matter of fact, you may want an Unlimited pass or an “à la carte” pass . In any case, these passes let you enjoy some great savings and are great tips to discover the Big Apple stress free at a lower cost.

The rates of the passes and activities/attractions can change, always check them on the official websites on the links provided above.

With more than 56 million visitors each year, New York City is one of the most tourity city of the world.

And they all want to discover the incredible attractions and activities the city has to offer!

Maybe you have been to the Colosseum in Rome , the Sagrada Familia in Barcelona or the Alhambra in Granada ?

If yes, you already know what it means: endless waiting lines at all the must-see attractions!

At the Empire State building or the Rockfeller center “At The Top” observation platform for example, if you don’t have a ticket, you will often have to wait in line at the ticket booth for an hour or two.

But don’t worry, there are 2 very simple solutions that will allow you to save a lot of time (and money!) during your 5-day trip to New York.

1. T he New York Go City Explorer Pass

The best way to skip the lines during your New York itinerary is to buy the “New York Go City Explorer Pass” .

When purchasing it, you can choose to get the NY Go City Explorer Pass for 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, or 10 attractions.

Unlike other city passes that are duration based (24h/48h/72h), for the New York Explorer pass, the only thing that matters is the number of activities you want to do.

It’s just perfect to enjoy the activities and visits at your own pace during your 5-day stay in New York 😄.

And with about 90 activities to select from, there’s no shortage of options.

Of course, all top-rated attractions such as the Empire State Building , the Statue of Liberty ferry , and the Top of the Rock observation deck are part of the package!

To buy the city pass, it’s really simple: you just have to click on the green button below .

After your purchase, you will receive your New York Explorer Pass via email .

In this email, you will also find a digital guide with handy information to help you organize your visits: operating hours, directions, and the details on how to book a time slot for most New York City attractions.

To buy your New York Explorer Pass , simply click on the green button below:

You might also have heard about the New York City Pass , however it’s not the best choice for a five-day trip as it only includes 5 attractions.

2. Skip the line tickets for New York’s best tourist attractions

Second solution : To avoid wasting your time waiting in line, you can also buy skip-the-line tickets in advance for any attraction or activity.

While the New York Go City Explorer Pass offers an excellent value for money for your five-day visit, you might prefer to visit only a few specific sites.

In that case, buying skip-the-line tickets for each attraction individually is the perfect alternative!

You can buy priority tickets online for all of New York’s best attractions, guided tours and activities.

Here are some of the best skip-the-line tickets you should consider for your 5-day stay in New York.

To book them, you simply need to click on the orange links below (you’ll also find them throughout the article):

If you already know your travel dates (or as soon as you will have them!) , you should really book your accommodation.

As New York is one of the most touristic cities in the world , the hotels offering the best value for money are often fully booked months in advance.

As a seasoned traveler, I can assure you that it’s always by planning as far in advance as possible that I’ve found the best hotels or apartments deals.

You agree that it would be a shame to somewhat ruin your stay in New York by ending up in a not-so-great hotel that costed you a fortune, right? 😅

So your best bet is to take 5 minutes now to have a look at  traveler’s favorite hotels in New York.

And if you like one of the hotels you find, book it!

It’s fast, it’s easy and most accommodation offer free cancellation. That’s the best way to protect yourself from the inconvenience of finding nothing but mediocre rooms at exorbitant prices.

Times Square has also a variety of food options. You can for example try a meal at the Hard Rock Cafe or at the Bubba Gump Shrimp Co.

Times Square

Second day: Brooklyn and Downtown Manhattan

Visiter New York en 3 jours Jour 2

Day 2 visits:

A. Brooklyn district and DUMBO B. Brooklyn Bridge C. Statue of Liberty D. Financial district E. 9/11 Memorial and museum F. One World Observatory G. Little Italy and Chinatown

On your 2nd day of your 5-day trip to New York, get prepared to explore Brooklyn, one of New York’s most dynamic boroughs.

Start your day in the hip neighborhood of DUMBO (an acronym for Down Under the Manhattan Bridge Overpass).

While in DUMBO, seize the opportunity to capture your version of the famous photo of the red bricks buildings with the Manhattan Bridge in the background.

To discover the secrets of Brooklyn , you should really book this walking tour (click here) . It’s the best way to make the most of your visit!

To reach Brooklyn, hop on the subway and stop at York Street station. You will be very close to Washington Street , where the photo spot I mentionned above is located.

Brooklyn

You simply can’t spend 5-days in New York   without taking a walk on the famous Brooklyn Bridge!

This remarkable architectural feat has stood proudly since 1883, linking Manhattan and Brooklyn across the East River. With its Gothic arches and network-like cables, it ranks among the top photography spots in NYC.

As you cover the 1.3-mile length , you can soak in panoramic views of the Manhattan skyline, the Statue of Liberty, and the Freedom Tower.

Did you know the Brooklyn Bridge was the world’s first steel-wire suspension bridge?

At the time of its opening, it was also the longest suspension bridge in the world . A true architectural feat!

Brooklyn bridge

Let’s continue the day with a cruise to one of the most iconic landmarks in the world: the Statue of Liberty .

Take the ferry from Battery Park*, and you’ll be on your way to this massive neoclassical sculpture standing majestically on Liberty Island. Built in 1886 , the Statue of Liberty is a gift from the people of France and is a universal symbol of freedom and democracy.

Just a stone’s throw from Liberty Island, you’ll find Ellis Island , home to the Ellis Island Immigration Museum , which provides an insight into the immigrant experience.

Your New York Explorer Pass comes with a round-trip ferry ticket, allowing you to visit both the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island.

If you don’t have this City Pass and wish to set foot on the islands , you need to book your tickets here:

Alternatively, you can also opt for a cruise around the statue, if you prefer to admire this emblematic monument from the water:

Whichever you choose, it’s an absolute must-do on your 5-day trip to New York .

*To get to Battery park, you can take the metro at Brooklyn bridge – City Hall Station and hop-off at Bowling green station.

To take your New York experience to an even greater height, you should opt for an unforgettable helicopter tour over the city!

Departing just 200 meters away from Battery Park , it’s a convenient addition to your day’s itinerary.

Whether you choose to go before or after your trip to the Statue of Liberty, it’s bound to be a thrilling experience.

You can opt for the classic tour ( click here to book your tour ) or choose to go for the sensational open-door version! Personally, I opted for the open door version and it was simply the best experience I had in New York!

To secure your seat on this once-in-a-lifetime experience during your 5-day trip to New York, you just need to click on the button below:

Statue of Liberty

After your inspiring visit to the Statue of Liberty and Ellis Island, you should head to the Financial District .

Take a stroll on Wall Street to see the New York Stock Exchange, Federal Hall, and of course, the Charging Bull statue.

Remember, rubbing its bronze nose, horns , and, *ahem*, rear parts, is said to bring good luck. You’ll be rubbing elbows with tourists instead of stock traders, but hey, it’s all part of the authentic New York experience !

Wall Street

Your New York in 5 days itinerary will now take you to the 9/11 Memorial and Museum .

It’s an impactful place that honors the victims of the 2001 World Trade Center terrorist attacks.

Here, you will find twin reflecting pools, each nearly an acre in size, that sit in the footprints where the Twin Towers once stood.

The museum, on the other hand, will allow you to learn more about this tragic day and its aftermath.

It’s a deeply moving tribute and an essential part of understanding New York’s recent history.

And if you want to learn more and get interesting facts, you can book a 90-minute guided walk around Ground Zero by clicking here.

Your   New York Explorer Pass   gets you free entry to the 9/11 Memorial and museum.

Without the pass, you need to book your tickets for the museum here:

National 9 11 Memorial & Museum

You’re already in the area, so why not go up to the top of the One World Observatory?

It’s located in the tallest building in the Western Hemisphere, the One World Trade Center. From the 100th floor, you’ll get an unbeatable 360-degree view of New York City . You’ll see, it’s super impressive!

And the elevator ride itself is an experience – the walls project a time-lapse of the New York City skyline from the 1500s to today.

You should visit One World Observatory around sunset for the best views. Don’t forget that the entrance to One World Observatory is included with your New York Go City Explorer Pass.

If you don’t have it, you need to get priority tickets in advance by clicking on the button below:

One World Observatory

After a full day of sightseeing, you’ve earned yourself a delicious meal! To end the second day of your 5-day visit to New York , why not immerse yourself in the culinary delights of Little Italy or Chinatown ?

For a taste of Italy, stroll down Mulberry Street in Little Italy . You’ll feel as though you’ve stepped onto the old continent itself.

Can’t decide where to eat? Don’t worry. Here’s my pro tip: head to Paesano or Da Nico . Their pasta and pizza are really good.  And for the dessert, you should try a cannoli or a tiramisu.

If you’re craving more exotic flavors , then Chinatown is the place to go.

I particularly recommend 2 restaurants in Chinatown: Shangai 21 and Tasty Hand Pulled Noodles.

Let me know what you think about their dumplings and noodles!

After a good dinner, make sure to get a good night’s sleep, as there’s much more to discover in New York City on the next days!

Best of all, Madame Tussauds is included in the New York Explorer Pass .

Madame Tussaud New York

After Madame Tussauds, let’s go on a walk to discover some of New York’s iconic architectural wonders .

Start with a visit to the New York Public Library . With its grand façade and interiors, it’s much more than just a place for book lovers!

Next, head to the bustling Grand Central Terminal . Even if you’re not catching a train, the celestial ceiling and the iconic clock are worth a look. It’s the kind of place that makes you feel like you’re in a classic movie.

You should then go to the Chrysler Building, an Art Deco masterpiece   and one of my favorite skyscrapers of New York.

To end your architectural tour, pass by the United Nations Headquarters . It’s a symbol of peace and diplomacy in the heart of the city.

Grand Central Station

Next stop of the day: the legendary Empire State Building, for sure one of the most iconic places to visit during your 5 days in New York .

The panoramic views of the city from the 86th and 102nd-floor observatories are absolutely breath-taking. As you step onto the viewing deck, you’ll feel on top of the world!

You should really visit the Empire State Building during the late afternoon so you can experience the magnificent sunset over the city.

Good news: the New York Explorer Pass gives you free access to the Empire State Building.

We’re on Day 4 of our 5 days in New York itinerary.

Today we’re going to explore trendy neighborhoods, snack at a renowned market, and enjoy some killer views from some of New York’s coolest rooftop bars.

Let’s go!

Visiter New York en 7 jours jour 4

Day 4 visits:

A. Greenwich Village B. Chelsea Market C. High Line D. The Vessel E. The Edge F. Rooftop bars

The day starts in the charming neighborhood of Greenwich Village .

With its tree-lined streets, historic townhouses , and vibrant art scene, it’s no wonder that this area was the birthplace of many cultural movements.

As you wander around, don’t forget to check out Washington Square Park, a favorite gathering spot for locals.

While you’re here, you can explore the small boutiques and enjoy a coffee at a sidewalk café.

You should also seek out the “Friends” apartment on the corner of Grove and Bedford Streets . Even if you aren’t a fan of the show, it’s a pretty cool slice of pop culture history to see in person!

You can also visit the Friends Experience where the sets of Rachel, Ross, Monica, Chandler, Joey and Phoebe’s flats are recreated. Be sure to book your tickets as early as possible because they sell out rapidly!

You need to book your tickets here.

Want to find out more about Greenwich Village?

The best way to visit the district is to book this guided walking tour (click here).

Greenwich Village

Feeling a bit hungry? It’s time to head over to Chelsea Market .

This bustling market is a foodie’s dream come true with a wide range of delicious cuisines all under one roof.

From mouth-watering tacos to lobster rolls, you’re in for a treat!

Once you’ve fueled up, you’re just a few steps away from one of the coolest urban parks in the world, the High Line.

This elevated railway line turned park offers a unique perspective of the city.

While strolling through gardens suspended in mid-air, you can admire the local artwork, chill in cozy loungers, and soak up amazing city views.

High Line Park

Next, we’re heading to Hudson Yards to visit the Vessel, a fascinating piece of architecture that looks like a giant honeycomb.

Unfortunately, it is now forbidden to use the spiral staircases in the structure, but you can access the ground floor free of charge.

It’s well worth the walk to see this very special building , made up of 154 flights of stairs, for a total of 2,500 steps!

Hudson Yards The Vessel

Just when you thought you’d had your fill of breathtaking views for the day, we’re off to the Edge Observation Deck .

As the highest outdoor sky deck in the Western Hemisphere, it offers jaw-dropping 360° views of the Big Apple.

If you’re brave enough, you can step out onto the glass floor and look straight down. My favorite part was looking down and seeing the tiny yellow taxis moving around below!

As the others observation deck in New York, you can visit the Edge for free if you have the New York Go City Explorer Pass.

If you don’t have the city Pass, you need to book your Edge tickets here!

Edge observation deck New York

To wrap up your fourth day of this 5-day New York itinerary, you should definitely head to one of the city’s iconic rooftop bars.

Let’s check out a few of my favorites:

1) 230 FIFTH Rooftop Bar NYC

This rooftop bar is famed for its extraordinary view of the Empire State Building. You should try their signature cocktails and share a few bites.

2) Westlight at The William Vale

A chic rooftop bar located at The William Vale in Brooklyn. Offering panoramic views of Manhattan and beyond, it’s the perfect place to watch the sunset.

3) The Rooftop at The Standard, High Line

This trendy spot is known for its lively atmosphere and fantastic views of the Hudson River and the city skyline.

4) The Press Lounge

The Press Lounge offers an upscale atmosphere with its large terrace and great views of Manhattan and the Hudson.

The Press Lounge (and most of the rooftop bar’s in New York) enforces a smart casual dress code, so don’t forget to dress appropriately!

Day 5: Art, Viewpoints, Shopping, and Upscale Dining in NYC

Visiter New York en une semaine jour 5

Day 5 visits:

A. MoMA B. Summit One Vanderbilt C. Shopping in New York D. Speakeasy or Michelin-starred restaurants

For the final day of your 5-day stay in New York, let’s start at the famous Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) .

A mecca for modern art enthusiasts,  the MoMA houses an incredible array of works from artists such as Vincent van Gogh, Salvador Dalí, and Pablo Picasso.

One of the highlights is undoubtedly van Gogh’s “Starry Night.” This iconic masterpiece is a must-see, so make sure you don’t miss it during your visit!

Entry to the MoMA is included in the New York Explorer Pass.

If you don’t have it, it’s simple, you just have to book your skip-the-line ticket here:

Museum of Modern Art (MoMA)

Next, you can head over to SUMMIT One Vanderbilt , one of New York’s latest attractions.

Soaring over Midtown Manhattan, this skyscraper offers jaw-dropping 360-degree views over the city.

And the best part? It’s not just about the views. SUMMIT One Vanderbilt is also home to immersive art installations and even an outdoor skybox where you can literally hang out over the edge of the building.

Access to the SUMMIT is NOT included in the New York pass.

You must therefore buy your ticket in advance, by clicking on the following button:

SUMMIT One Vanderbilt New York

New York City is a world-renowned shopping destination.

You already passed by 5th Avenue on the first day, but you can of course go back there to do a bit of shopping.

Looking for something a little more understated?

Head over to Madison Avenue for a mix of designer boutiques and art galleries. And don’t forget the iconic Macy’s at Herald Square!

It’s the largest department store in the world, so yes, you might end up spending a lot of time (and money) there.

Or perhaps you’re more into unique finds and eclectic boutiques?

Then Soho is your place. With its cobblestone streets and cast-iron buildings, this neighborhood is charming in its own right.

Plus, you’ll find numerous boutiques offering everything from fashion to home décor (a bit harder to take back home, though 😅).

Soho New York

After a day of shopping, nothing beats unwinding at a speakeasy or indulging in a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant.

For a little taste of the Prohibition era, slip into a hidden bar like “Employees Only” or the “ Please Don’t Tell” speakeasy. Trust me, sipping on a cocktail in these secretive establishments is a very special experience!

If you’re a foodie, treating yourself to a meal at a Michelin-starred restaurant is an excellent way to wrap up your 5 days in New York .

I personally loved Le Bernardin , known for its exquisite seafood, and Eleven Madison Park , where each dish is a work of art.

Remember to make reservations at these restaurants well in advance. They’re popular spots, and tables can fill up quickly.

Speakeasy New York

How the Biden-Trump Border Visits Revealed a Deeper Divide

Their approaches to immigration represent a test of voters’ appetite for the messiness of democracy, pitting the president’s belief in legislating against his rival’s pledge to be a “Day 1” dictator.

  • Share full article

Clothes are hung on razor wire near the southern border. Dozens of shirts and other garments are visible amid the brush.

By Shane Goldmacher

Even the participants in President Biden and Donald J. Trump’s overlapping visits to Texas on Thursday seemed to sense there was something remarkable about their near encounter along the southern border.

Rarely do the current and former commanders in chief arrive on the same scene on the same day to present such sharply different approaches to an issue as intractable as immigration. Even rarer still was the reality that the two men are most likely hurtling toward a rematch in November.

“Today is a day of extraordinary contrast,” declared Gov. Greg Abbott of Texas, who had appeared alongside Mr. Trump.

But the dueling border events were about something even more fundamental than immigration policy. They spoke to the competing visions of power and presidency that are at stake in 2024 — of autocracy and the value of democracy itself.

Perhaps the most surprising facet of the split screen was that Mr. Trump and Mr. Biden agreed on some of the basic contours of the border problem: that the current situation, with migrant crossings setting a new monthly record of nearly 250,000 in December, is unsustainable.

“It’s long past time to act,” Mr. Biden said.

Where they disagreed, at least in part, was politically in how to go about fixing it. And their disparate answers represent a test of the American appetite for the systemic messiness of democracy: Mr. Biden’s intrinsic and institutional belief in legislating versus the “Day 1” promises of dictatorial enactment under Mr. Trump.

Mr. Biden says he would close the border, if only he could. Mr. Trump says Mr. Biden could close the border, if only he would.

“A very dangerous border — we’re going to take care of it,” Mr. Trump pledged on the tarmac upon his Texas arrival.

“What’s being proposed is more than a difference on immigration policy,” said Brendan Nyhan, professor of government at Dartmouth, who helped found a group that monitors American democracy. “The difference is between a president who is trying to address a complex policy issue through our political system and one who is promising quasi-authoritarian solutions.”

For his part, Mr. Biden made the case on Thursday that his hands had been tied by the failure of a bipartisan border package that had been negotiated on Capitol Hill. The legislation would have increased border spending, made asylum claims harder and stiffened fentanyl screening. It unraveled when Mr. Trump demanded its defeat.

Mr. Biden, who spent more than 30 years as a senator, has for decades held out bipartisan deal-making as an ideal in and of itself. “I didn’t get everything I wanted in that compromise bipartisan bill, but neither did anybody else,” Mr. Biden said in Brownsville, Texas. “Compromise is part of the process. That’s how democracy works.”

Then he added one more thought: “That’s how it’s supposed to work.”

Immigration as an issue has broadly favored Republicans in recent years and party strategists see it as a top vulnerability for Democrats in 2024. But Democrats hope Republicans killing the border bill could divide up some of the blame.

In a surprise flourish toward the end of his remarks, the president offered an olive branch to Mr. Trump himself.

“Join me,” Mr. Biden urged, in calling on the two of them to work together to get the legislation passed. “Or I’ll join you.”

Minutes earlier and hundreds of miles away in Eagle Pass, Texas, Mr. Trump — whose 2016 convention speech accepting the Republican nomination was defined by the phrase “I alone can fix it” — had outlined a very different view of exercising power. After passing razor wire and military Humvees, and after shaking hands with Texas National Guard members in fatigues, Mr. Trump cast himself as a battle-tested leader ready to fend off an “invasion” by hordes of “fighting-age men” who look like “warriors.”

“This is like a war,” Mr. Trump said, expressing a willingness to use something akin to wartime powers.

He said Mr. Biden had “blood” on his hands, citing in particular the recent killing of Laken Riley, a student in Georgia, where a migrant was arrested. He repeated that the country was suffering a “Biden migrant crime” wave.

Representative Robert Garcia, a California Democrat, said the former president was using dehumanizing rhetoric. “This immigrant crime narrative is racist,” Mr. Garcia said in a call with reporters before Mr. Trump’s event.

Mr. Trump appeared with Mr. Abbott, who has begun building an operating base in Eagle Pass for up to 2,300 soldiers to curb illegal crossings from Mexico, a move that has caused a clash with federal officials. A federal court on Thursday had blocked a Texas law to allow the state and local police to arrest migrants.

The thing about Mr. Trump’s lightning-rod pledge to be a “Day 1” dictator was that it was not just a blanket promise of authoritarian rule. It was grounded in a specific policy. He said he wanted to close the border — the limits of governmental red tape be damned.

Back in December, the Fox News host Sean Hannity had offered Mr. Trump the opportunity to wriggle out of the remark during a town hall. Instead, Mr. Trump embraced it fully.

“He says, ‘You’re not going to be a dictator, are you?’” Mr. Trump said as he re-enacted the exchange with Mr. Hannity for dramatic effect. “I said, ‘No, no, no, other than Day 1. We’re closing the border, and we’re drilling, drilling, drilling. After that, I’m not a dictator.’”

By any means necessary has long been a Trump mantra. He was accused of unconstitutionality in 2015 when he called for a Muslim ban. As president, he enacted a narrower version focused on seven countries that included those with Muslim majorities .

In a possible second term, Mr. Trump has made clear that he wants to be surrounded by executors and enablers. His allies are eyeing a more aggressive brand of lawyer who can work around any legal limits or barriers that may be put up by what he decries as the “deep state.”

“People don’t want to hear anything anymore — they just want the masses to stop coming,” Jerry Patterson, a Republican who is a former Texas land commissioner, said in an interview.

Mr. Patterson, who said proudly he was often criticized by the right for supporting guest-worker programs, said the situation now was “truly a crisis,” even if Thursday’s visits wouldn’t amount to any change on the ground.

He predicted the election of Mr. Trump would change things — not because of any policy but because of the perception among potential migrants that he would blockade or deport them.

“Perception,” he said, “is more important than reality.”

Republicans of late have broadly insisted that Mr. Biden can solve some of the border troubles by reimposing some of Mr. Trump’s reversed executive policies. Mr. Biden announced no new actions on Thursday but is considering an executive action that could prevent people who cross illegally from claiming asylum . His State of the Union speech is next week.

Speaker Mike Johnson, the most powerful Republican on Capitol Hill, called on Thursday for Mr. Biden to act on his own, an unusual level of deference from a legislative leader to executive powers.

“If President Biden truly cared to acknowledge the national security crisis at the southern border, he would sit down at his desk and sign executive orders,” Mr. Johnson wrote on X.

Refusing to concede has become the new normal for congressional Republicans, said Michael Podhorzer, the former political director of the A.F.L.-C.I.O., the labor federation. The collapsed immigration deal, he added, was just the latest episode of Republican intransigence, dating back to voting en masse against the economic recovery bill in the first days of former President Barack Obama’s first term.

“No problem is serious enough to compromise to solve,” Mr. Podhorzer said of the G.O.P. philosophy. “The best answer is just to put us in charge.”

Popular cruise line to sell monthly passes in 2024 — for the cost of a month’s rent in NYC

This summer, WFH stands for Working From Helm.

Grownups-only cruise line Virgin Voyages is floating an offer remote workers may not be able to refuse in 2024 — ditch your home office and set up shop at sea for a month, with everything you need to stay connected to your job, at a relatively reasonable fare.

Priced at $9,900 for two people — broken down per person, that’s a little more than the cost of your average 1-BR Manhattan apartment right now — the Scarlet Summer Season Pass will buy you four weeks on the Mediterranean aboard the award-winning line’s Scarlet Lady in a balcony cabin.

The pass is priced roughly 30 percent cheaper than normal. The offer will be available June-September of this year, Travel & Leisure first reported. All journeys will begin in Barcelona and include stops in Ibiza.

“If you’ve been wondering if your work-life balance could use a little more  life , we have the voyage offer for you,” an announcement read.

“Inspired by Richard Branson’s belief and track record that brilliant work is best paired with a hearty dose of fun, experience for yourself how four weeks exploring coastal towns in France, Spain, and Italy might be the exhilarating buoy you’ve been needing.”

Fares on any Virgin Voyage include free internet and free coffee; passholders will be given a $10 credit at the onboard espresso bar as well as laundry service — you’ve got to look good on those video calls.

Other exclusive passholder benefits will include priority access to restaurant reservations and shore excursions, and access to a members-only sundeck.

Ready to go? Fill out this  form online – you’ll get an answer within 72 business hours. But make sure you’re all in, because the pass is non-refundable.

The upstart, adults-only line, which launched in 2021 with one ship, is now up to three — Travel + Leisure recently called it one of the best cruise lines for 2024.

10 Days in New York City - The Ultimate Itinerary

You’ve got 10 days in New York. Potentially longer. But what to do you do? Everywhere you look, there’s something new to experience: a hot dog stand here, an Empire State Building there. How does someone prioritize in this bustling city? And more importantly, how can you save money while doing seeing all the best stuff.

Well, firstly, if you’re a savvy traveler, you would have already invested in your New York Pass. As you already know, this sightseeing pass gives you free entry to 100+ attractions – all you pay is the pass price. But if you’re a super-savvy traveler (perhaps even an elite traveler) you would have bought a 10-day pass. Why? Because this pass offers savings additional savings on top of what you’d save with the most popular 3-day pass. The cost per day for the 10-day adult pass, when it’s on sale, is just $32.90 a day compared to the 3-day adult pass at $66.33. Big Bus New York Hop-on Hop-off Tour

Statue of liberty & ellis island immigration museum, luna park at coney island, empire state building observation deck, museum of modern art (moma).

  • and more...

There’s no more comprehensive way to see New York than a hop-on, hop-off bus tour. Sit back, relax and have your selfie stick handy as the bus rolls past major landmarks like the Empire State Building, Madison Square Garden, among other iconic sights. An expert tour guide will commentate the history of attractions along the route and entertain you for the duration of the ride, making it a great day out for visitors and locals curious about the city they live in.

Access the tour's three most popular routes: Uptown, Downtown, and Midtown, and have the flexibility to hop on or off at any of the 25+ included stops. If you fancy seeing an area in a bit more detail, why not hop-off and join a walking tour, like the one below?

Queens-Flushing International Food Excursion

Put your walking shoes on, hop-off at Midtown’s Grand Central Station, and get a real slice of authentic New York in this Queens-Flushing International Food Excursion. Local insight, delivered by a real local expert, will highlight landmarks such as the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, The New York State Pavillion (featured in the hit movie Men in Black ), and Citi Field, home to the Home Run Apple. Absorb the sights before arriving at the excursion’s final destination: Queens Night Market. After all that walking, you’ll appreciate the evocative mixture of flavors, fragrances and night air combined with festive illuminations at this attraction.

The Statue of Liberty’s story is a truly compelling one. Commissioned in recognition of the friendship between the people of France and that of the US, at the centennial mark of the American Declaration of Independence, it has since grown to symbolise freedom, democracy and empathy, worldwide. Learn more about this epic landmark’s construction by taking a trip to Battery Park and then a ferry to the Statue of Liberty herself. The Statue of Liberty Museum is an essential pitstop during your trip, featuring cutting-edge exhibits and even an app to educate and impress every visitor. Before you set off, remember to pay a visit to the Immigration Museum.
