How To Spot Fake Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag

Louis Vuitton Keepall bag on a grey background

To authenticate Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag you should start by analyzing the overall look with measurements and tiny details. Next observe zipper, hot stamp lettering, and stitching- even though they might not seem as important, you might find some major differences. Don't forget to analyze handles, sides, and hardware. Lastly, finish your authentication process by checking the serial number and label.

Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag Authentication: The Overall Look Method

If you get a Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 bag apart you need it for its spaciousness (apart from its fabulous design and durability, of course), don't you?

While the original bag is pretty wide with a big room inside the replica is narrower than it should be.

Not only the measurements but the shape of the model itself is different in both cases: the outline is nice and round in the left picture whereas it gives more of a pentagon shape to the fake bag.

Fake Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag: The Zipper Method

Imagine paying hundreds of dollars for a bag and getting a slider stuck on the zipper. Sounds like a nightmare doesn't it?

Replica factories always manage to use the lowest quality zippers- look how close teeth are to one another on the authentic zipper whereas they are crooked and further apart from each other on the replica.

The puller itself is differently shaped in the right picture: it is wider and bigger than it should be with more square-like features.

Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag Real Vs Fake: The Hot Stamp Method

Lettering and details done with a hot stamp is a Louis Vuitton style.

Look at how thin letters are on the fake model, they almost look scratched-out when they are supposed to be as thick and neat as they are on the authentic bag.

Even the engraved lines are not done properly- they need to be thicker and deep inside the leather.

A few words on the stitching too- look at how neat the stitching is on the authentic handle, done with thick thread whereas on the fake bag it looks as if the stitches are going to come off any minute.

Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag Real Vs Fake

Real Vs Fake Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag: The Handle Method

Let's take a close look at the handles.

Look at how small the folded leather piece of the authentic handle is whereas it appears much larger on the fake bag.

The brown outline is thicker and neat in the left picture while it is a little messy on the replica handle.

The replica stitching itself doesn't give many hopes either: Look at how thin the thread used for the sewing is and instead of small tight stitches they are sloppy and long.

Very punctual and professional from start to finish! I purchased a pre-loved LV Bag and I wanted to play it safe! As it turns out, it is authentic and I could not be happier with the confirmation and authenticity certificate! Thank you!

Fhoebie De Vera

they processed my request super fast! they needed more photos and they were specific on the kind of photo.highly recommended site! will definitely use their service again. thank you so much!

My vintage Gucci bag didn’t have a serial number making it impossible for the average person to know if it was genuine. So happy for the outcome of my genuine handbag. Thanks again.

Splendour Spot

It’s my 3rd time now using their service and I have to say their customer service is the best and got my certificates quite quickly. Highly recommend!

I was looking for a way to authenticate high quality vintage items and came across LegitGrails. So I sent them several items to authenticate and they were terrific. I had to send additional photos a few time but that gave me more confidence in them!

How To Tell If Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag Is Fake: The Side Method

If we take a look at the side of the bag, we'll see how neat the handle attachment of the authentic model is whereas it looks very cheaply-made in the right picture.

We also want you to take a look at the number- it looks scratched out on the fake model when it is supposed to be nicely engraved as it is on the original bag; the number has to be blending in well with the background.

The last detail of the method is the ending of the zipper- there is a huge space between the sides on the authentic zipper when they are supposed to be closer.

Legit Check Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag: The Hardware Method

For some reason, the replica factories always fail to copy the hardware well. They always use cheaper materials to reduce the overall cost and it shows.

As you can see, the authentic metal is reflective and smooth whereas the replica is grainy and matte.

The engraving is done poorly in the right picture too- letters need to be deeper down the metal.

The shape of the metal handle attachment itself is different in both cases too- it is rounder and smoother on the authentic bag.

How To Legit Check Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag: The Serial Number Method

Sometimes replica items come without serial numbers but keep in mind that it is not the case at all times- for example in this comparison you can see how the fake bag has a serial number but is written in a different font.

Letters on the authentic bag are paler and thinner whereas they are thicker and bolder in the right picture.

The background leather is different in both cases.

The button itself is bigger and rounder on the authentic bag and the fake bag should be replicating the same thing.

How To Spot Fake Louis Vuitton Keepall 55 Bag: The Label Method

We got to the last method for today.

Even though the authentic leather is matte, it has a glossy effect which is not the case on the fake label.

The replica factory did a better job in replicating a font here but there are still some details that had to be taken into account- for example, the italic effect on the "made in France" text and bigger space between letters.

Stitching, again, is carelessly done in the right picture- the thread is thinner and stitches are asymmetrical and sloppy.

How To Authenticate Louis Vuitton Bags | 7 Best Ways to Spot a Fake

Counterfeit items have always been a problem with luxury items, and that is not much different when it comes to Louis Vuitton items. Websites like eBay are often seen as hubs for fake bags, with a high percentage of these boasting the iconic LV logo. Find out how to authenticate Louis Vuitton in this in depth guide.

Scammers are constantly out there trying to take advantage of shoppers in search of vintage designer goods . So the best way to ensure you don’t fall victim and purchase counterfeit id is to know your brands inside and out.

Starting with the legendary Louis Vuitton Paris, of course. One of the most famous French luxury brands , its designer handbags and leather accessories are synonymous with style and quality.

How to authenticate Louis Vuitton bags and accessories

Authentic luxury at its finest, Louis Vuitton is a luxury goods brand known for their exquisite bags, luggage and luxury trunks. While knockoff Louis Vuitton designs can be seen all over the world, there’s no denying that nothing matches the quality of an original Louis Vuitton item.

From meticulous hand-stitching to high quality materials and signature hardware details that are designed to last generations, few luxury fashion brands outshine this iconic luxury label. Plus, who wouldn’t love the classic luxury branding and logo?

Generally, when it comes to luxury goods, you get what you pay for; therefore when looking at a Louis Vuitton knockoff vs real product – it pays to have an eye on quality.

The iconic Louis Vuitton Damier and Monogram patterns can be found on many authentic products such as the Alma, Neverfull and Speedy. Yet they’re often imitated by unscrupulous sellers.

Here’s a detailed list made to help you identify authentic and fake Louis Vuitton handbags.

How to Authenticate Louis Vuitton – 7 Ways to Spot Real Vs Fake Louis Vuitton

The best way to make sure that you are buying an authentic LV bag is to purchase it from one of the Louis Vuitton stores. The company has more than 460 stores worldwide, which will provide you with a genuine Louis Vuitton receipt for all items.

However, if you are buying a vintage LV bag, you need to take extra precautions. Authentic bags have several characteristics that can be looked at to identify whether they are genuine.

Black Louis Vuitton purse

1. Check The Stitching

If you’re wondering how to tell if a Louis Vuitton bag is real, start by checking the stitching. The number of stitches, the quality thereof, the alignment, and the color of the stitches can all indicate if it’s the real deal or a fake bag. Although vintage authentic Louis Vuitton bags at times don’t have perfect stitching, they will always be well-crafted.

The number of stitches should always mirror one another on the symmetrical parts of the Louis Vuitton pochette or bag. For certain bags, experts can count the exact amount of stitches in a certain place and tell if it’s a real bag.

Another example that is specific to the LV monogram bag, is that the stitching is always a certain yellow color on the trim and brown on the leather. So be sure to check if the stamps and side of the bag are well stitched.

2. Look At The Louis Vuitton Stamp

In all the authentic LV bags there is a heat stamp that acts as a mark of authentication. Unlike Chanel, which has authenticity cards that come with the purchase, these heat stamps are placed on the inside of a Louis Vuitton purse.

For a long time, these stamps were marked as “Louis Vuitton Paris” but since then their authentic designer handbags are also being made in other countries. You can find authentic stamps with Spain, America, and other countries marked on them as well.

The easiest way to identify whether the stamp is fake or not is to look at the letter. On a real Louis Vuitton bag, the L is a lot smaller than the O, the T’s are close to one another and look like they almost touch. Another telltale sign is the lettering which is always thin and crisp.

3. Check The Date Stamp

Similar to the stamps inside of the bags, you can check Louis Vuitton date codes to see if they are real. The letters represent the country they were made in while the four numbers represent when they were made. This acts as a model number.

On Louis Vuitton purses that date back anywhere between 2007 up until 2021, the first and third numbers represent the week of the year it was made. The second and fourth numbers of the Louis Vuitton date code represent the year it was made.

Fake LV bags can, of course, use these but be sure to compare the date stamp country to the country on the heat stamp that was mentioned above.

4. Check The Louis Vuitton Hardware

An easy way to see if luxury brand bags are real is by looking at the hardware, such as accent pieces or the zipper pull. Each metallic element should have a Louis Vuitton engraving.

On timeless, vintage bags like the Louis Vuitton Neverfull bag, you can almost immediately tell if it’s an imitation. On this specific LV handbag, you simply need to look in front of the inside pocket. The hardware on an original LV bag should be in a D-like shape, but counterfeits tend to have those rounded.

A Louis Vuitton leather backpack

5. Leather Strips

Looking at the leather strips that run over the bags and make up the handles is another surefire way to identify if it’s a genuine Louis Vuitton bag or a fake.

However, this can only be noted after owning a bag for quite some time or after buying used older bags. And it is specific to bags using pale-colored leather, such as a few pieces from the Louis Vuitton Speedy bag range.

These straps are made out of Vachetta leather and there is a distinct reason for this. On real Louis Vuitton bags, these straps, after time, will start to darken and turn into a more golden brown shade. If you own a bag or bought a used vintage bag and it stays the same pale-color, it is unfortunately a fake.

6. The Dust Bag

Another way to find out if a Louis Vuitton bag or wallet is genuine is by looking at the dust bag, the bag in which the item comes in. This is an easy way to spot fake Louis Vuitton bags, since it’s such a minimalist design.

Real dust bags have a soft tan color and feature the name, Louis Vuitton, or have the LV logo centered on the bag.

So if you purchase an LV purse that has any other details, such as a serial number, country code, or any other non-valuable information, then the chances are high that you’re holding a lookalike purse.

7. The Logo

A Louis Vuitton logo seems simple enough, but there is a distinct difference with fake logos. The letter L should always be lower than the letter V on authentic Louis Vuitton handbags. Be sure to check whether the letters are wonky or imperfectly aligned.

You should also look at the monogram patterns on Louis Vuitton wallets and bags diagonally. The order of the strips should be fleur-de-lis , a circle, fleur-de-lis, and then the LV logo.

Where Is Louis Vuitton Made?

Originally, Louis Vuitton bags were made exclusively in France. Many still are, however the brand now also has leather workshops in Italy, Spain and the United States. Therefore, if you see an LV bag that says Made in the USA, it could certainly be authentic.

What Is The Most Frequent Louis Vuitton Bag Color?

There is a wide range of Louis Vuitton bag colors, although the most famous color is dark brown. These days, it’s not unusual to find a blue Louis Vuitton bag or a pink Louis Vuitton purse.

Louis Vuitton handles and trimmings are often made from untreated Vachetta leather. It starts as a pale beige color and darkens with age and usage.

LV hardware is made from brass or silver, depending on the model. There are many different Louis Vuitton bag linings, such as red microfiber for Damier Ebene handbags.

Identify Genuine Louis Vuitton Bags with Confidence

With all the information presented above, you shouldn’t have any more issues with identifying real LV bags. Designer bags, especially from the Louis Vuitton brand make great self-spoils, as well as Valentine’s gifts for a lucky lady .

But you want to be sure you’re getting the bona fide product when you’re paying the price for an authentic bag. So use these tips when you shop to check if your purchase is legitimate, so that you can avoid counterfeit bags.

What Is a Louis Vuitton Authenticity Check?

If you find yourself struggling to identify fake Louis Vuitton bags, be sure to get in touch with a professional to make sure that your purchase is legit. There are specialist Louis Vuitton authentication companies which offer a designer handbag authentication service.

These specialized companies charge a fee ranging from around $30 for a basic authentificaton to around $50. An LV authenticator usually combines human knowledge with an image database of genuine Louis Vuitton items.

Of course, you should remember to be wary of each purchase and preferably go to a Louis Vuitton store to get your hands on an authentic Louis Vuitton bag. Make sure to keep any receipts in case you ever want to resell your bag at a later date.

How to Spot Fake Louis Vuitton Bags: 9 Ways to Tell Real Purses

A pioneer in monogram bags, French luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton has produced countless handcrafted purses that women and men covet .

Even if their artisanal handbags come with hefty price tags, Hollywood celebrities and ordinary folk want to get their hands on one (or several).

You can find some pre-owned authentic Louis Vuitton bags, clothing, jewelry, and shoes at Farfetch .

The classic Louis Vuitton logo embellished on monogrammed leather

This is no surprise, thanks to their top-grade Italian leather and precise craftsmanship. Each bag comes with a lot of time, love, and effort.

Louis Vuitton bags are made with high-quality materials, such as leather, canvas, and hardware

Recently, Louis Vuitton has used Emma Stone , Deepika Padukone, Zhou Dongyu, Naomi Osaka, Hoyeon Jung, Millie Bobby Brown , Michelle Williams , and Alicia Vikander as their main endorsers.

Other under-the-radar LV faces include Jaden Smith , Cate Blanchett , and Jennifer Connelly .

The hardware on a Louis Vuitton bag should be made of high-quality metal

Unfortunately, with the rise of the brand’s popularity also come the counterfeiters. Fake Louis Vuitton bags have dominated the e-commerce industry, resulting in numerous eBay sellers who offer knockoffs at ridiculously low prices.

In November 2019, CNBC reported that the world’s largest online consumer marketplace for luxury items , The RealReal, has been selling fake luxury products.

The same month, officials seized thousands of counterfeit designer bags at Dulles International Airport.

Most real Louis Vuitton bags and purses are made throughout Europe and the United States, and the company does not manufacture handbags in China

According to FOX 5 DC , the counterfeit cache included 2,601 coin purses, 459 purses, and three backpacks adorned with Gucci , Louis Vuitton, Chanel , Dior , Prada , and Hermes designer labels.

Don’t worry – all hope is not lost. We have the know-how to bust those fake Louis Vuittons, saving you the money and hassle of falling prey to counterfeit bag predators.

Without further ado, we bring you nine easy ways to tell whether your LV is the real deal:

1. The workmanship is top-notch artisanal

One of the more common ways to know if a bag is authentic is to check its workmanship. Just like Gucci handbags and other luxury designer bags, an authentic purse will have perfectly aligned stitches that are the same length.

The artisans behind authentic bags are so skilled that the number of stitches on one handle matches the other.

Authentic Louis Vuitton bags will have perfectly aligned stitches that are the same length

For Louis Vuitton bags, the stitching thread is more of a mustard color than a brighter yellow hue.

The leather pieces that make up the bag are perfectly cut and fitted with each other. You might want to put that bag down if there are creases, bubbles, and misalignment due to bad fitting.

2. Hardware is beautifully crafted from brass

Bag connoisseurs know that the next thing to check for is hardware. Louis Vuitton uses top-grade brass hardware that usually comes in shiny or matte.

Do a reflection test for shiny zippers and locks – the brass should reflect as a mirror would.

Louis Vuitton uses top grade brass hardware that usually comes in shiny or matte

The zippers should not snag when you try to unzip the bag. Louis Vuitton also manufactures their own zippers and does not use YKK or other branded zippers.

Hardware should not be covered in plastic. Counterfeit bag makers wrap the hardware in plastic to prevent them from tarnishing right away. Quality hardware will not tarnish and is usually uncovered.

3. The shell pattern should be neat and symmetrical

Another obvious thing to look at in monogram bags is the shell pattern. Louis Vuitton’s classic LV logo should be balanced, and the letter L should always be lower than the V.

The bag is not authentic if the letters are wonky and not perfectly aligned.

Louis Vuitton's classic LV logo should be symmetrical and the letter L should always be lower than the V

It is also important to note the placement and consistency of the monogram pattern. If you look at the pattern diagonally, the order of one strip should be a fleur-de-lis, a circle, another fleur-de-lis, and then the LV logo. The strip alternating it should contain only the fleur-de-lis symbol.

For logo embellishments, check that they are symmetrical and beautifully crafted. The Maison logo usually writes “Louis Vuitton Paris” in two lines.

4. Vachetta leather oxidizes and darkens over time

The leather strips that run across and make up the handles are called Vachetta leather. Vachetta leather is made out of natural, untreated European calf hide that darkens with oxidation over time.

Vachetta leather oxidizes and darkens over time

If the strips stay a pale color over time, it is fake. The leather should darken into a beautiful golden shade as it ages.

5. Handle trim should be a darker shade of red, not bright red

Many great things about Louis Vuitton monogram bags keep us preoccupied. One such detail, often overlooked by the casual observer but cherished by connoisseurs, is the red trim or edge dye that accents the Vachetta leather.

This trim, sometimes called “glazing,” is a testament to the brand’s attention to detail. The subtle red edge provides a sharp contrast to the pale Vachetta leather, enhancing its visual appeal.

Identify fake Louis Vuitton bags by studying the shade of the trim

Beyond aesthetics, the glazing serves a practical purpose. It helps to seal the edges of the leather, protecting them from wear and potential damage from moisture or dirt.

Over the years, this red glazing has also become an important marker of authenticity. Replicas or counterfeit bags might get this detail wrong – either by using an incorrect shade of red, applying it messily, or neglecting it altogether.

Just like the Vachetta leather itself, which develops a beautiful patina over time, the red glazing can change slightly as the bag ages, adding to the individual character of each piece.

6. Date code or RFID chip

Louis Vuitton stopped using date codes in their handbags and small leather goods starting March 1, 2021. Instead, they are now using RFID chips.

You will not find a date code if you are looking for a Louis Vuitton bag made after March 1, 2021. Instead, you will find an RFID chip. You can use a special app to scan the RFID chip to verify the bag’s authenticity.

Before March 2021, each bag had a date code and a little leather tag where letters and numbers were embossed to note where and when the bag was made.

The Louis Vuitton logo should be crisp and clear

If you are looking for a Louis Vuitton bag made before March 2021, you must check for the date code. The date code can be found on a leather tab inside the bag. If the bag does not have a date code, it is likely a counterfeit.

7. Know your dust bag and box history

Counterfeiters often get lazy when it comes to details. Knowing your history of Louis Vuitton dust bags and boxes is an excellent way to catch fake products.

Dustbags before 2004 are made of beige flannel with the LV logo and brown drawstrings. Some older bags may have blue drawstrings, and some have felt-like material with jagged cut edges.

This brown leather trunk case from Louis Vuitton features a round top handle, a push-lock fastening, an all-over logo print, gold-tone hardware, a hanging key fob, an internal mirror, internal drawers, two removable logo-print bags, and two detachable shoulder straps

From 2004 to 2016, the beige dust bag was made of flannel or linen. A perfectly symmetrical and centered LV logo is printed in brown on it. A small white tag saying where the bag was made can be found inside.

In 2016, Louis Vuitton revamped their packaging. All their boxes are orange with navy blue text. The dust bags followed suit, turning into a cream color with navy blue writing.

8. Use your sense of smell

This one takes some time to practice. It’s good to know what authentic leather smells like to differentiate it from synthetic ones.

Also, if the bag reeks of chemicals, you might reconsider purchasing it.

9. Common sense, really

If you have a bag that retails for $1,000 and is being sold to you at $100, there is much reason to be wary. Research the original retail price online before considering a purchase.

This dark brown and beige leather tote from Louis Vuitton features a monogram pattern, gold-tone hardware, round top handles, an internal logo patch, a hanging luggage tag, a drawstring closure, and a removable lining

Louis Vuitton also lists the retailers where their bags can be purchased. The brand also limits online resellers, so be careful when purchasing bags online.

Do Louis Vuitton bags have serial numbers?

No, Louis Vuitton bags do not have serial numbers. Louis Vuitton introduced RFID chips in their handbags and small leather goods starting March 1, 2021. The RFID chips are a more secure way to authenticate their products than the date codes, as they are unique to each item and cannot be easily counterfeited.

The RFID chips are also linked to a blockchain, which is a secure and transparent digital ledger. The blockchain stores information about the item’s history, such as its manufacture date, materials used, and the original buyer. This information can be used to verify the item’s authenticity and track its history.

RFID chips and blockchain constitute a significant step forward in the fight against counterfeiting. It is a more secure and reliable way to authenticate luxury goods; other luxury brands will likely follow suit.

Why are LV bags so expensive?

One reason is the high manufacturing cost. The luxury brand produces handbags in workshops in France, Spain, and the United States and does not outsource manufacturing to cheaper locations like India and China.

Some leather products are produced in other European countries, such as Switzerland and Germany. Louis Vuitton shoes are primarily made in Italy.

In 2019, Louis Vuitton opened a 100,000-square-foot factory in Johnson County in Texas, its third factory in the United States. Purses and bags made in the United States are stamped with “Made in the USA” tags.

Since Louis Vuitton bags are not made in China, handbags and purses with “Made in China” tags are fake.

Cynthia Bailey shows off her large Louis Vuitton tote

In addition, the company spends billions of dollars every year on marketing. According to Reuters , Louis Vuitton spent 5.6 billion euros ($6.3 billion) on marketing in 2018, reaching 12% of group revenues.

Does Louis Vuitton have a sale?

No, Louis Vuitton does not have sales. They never discount their products, not even during the holiday season.

This is because Louis Vuitton wants to maintain its image as a luxury brand. They want their products to be seen as exclusive and desirable, and discounting them would go against that image.

Why does Louis Vuitton burn unsold bags?

Louis Vuitton wants to create the perception that its bags are in high demand and are not easily available. By destroying unsold bags, they are making it more difficult for people to get their hands on them, which drives up demand.

By destroying unsold bags, they are also making it more difficult for counterfeiters to get their hands on the materials they need to make fake bags.

Louis Vuitton wants to protect its brand image from being associated with cheap, low-quality products. By destroying unsold bags, they ensure that only the highest quality bags are available.

Some have criticized the practice of destroying unsold bags as being wasteful and environmentally unfriendly. Others argue that it is a form of price discrimination, as it only benefits the wealthy who can afford to buy Louis Vuitton bags.

Some myths:

1. “the leather will never cut off at the lv logo.”.

Some have claimed that pieces of leather will usually not cut off at the LV logo, but that is not necessarily true. For smaller bags, the logos are cut off at the edge.

One thing that you can check for, however, is if all the logos are cut off at the same point. This means that the pattern is symmetrical.

2. “Louis Vuitton does not invert their logo.”

Again, this is not true. For models that use a single continuous leather piece, such as the Keepall, one side will have inverted logos on it.

Louis Vuitton is continuously coming up with designs outside of the classic ones, so it’s good to know their bags well. A great way to familiarize yourself is to study their photos online.

If you’re in doubt about your purchase, you can call Louis Vuitton for help authenticating your product.

When you’re on the market for a Louis Vuitton bag, you want to make sure you’re getting the real deal. How exactly do you do that, though? Not to worry—spotting a fake Louis Vuitton purse is simple, as long as you know what to look for. We’ll teach you how to authenticate the stamps and pattern of a genuine Louis Vuitton bag, as well as how to take a good look at the hardware, stitching, and lining. We’ve even included some tips to help you vet the seller, so you can be extra confident that your bag is 100% real.

Authenticating Based on the Stamps and Pattern

Step 1 Locate the “made in” stamp imprinted in the leather on the bag.

  • A short leg the bottom of the Ls.
  • Os that are round and bigger than the L.
  • Ts that are so close they appear to be touching.
  • Lettering that is thin and crisp.

Tip : If you’re unsure of how the stamp should look, try comparing the lettering on the bag to an authentic Louis Vuitton stamp image.

Step 2 Check to see if the bag’s date code matches the “made in” stamp.

  • Be aware that bags made prior to 1980 will not have a date code, so this will not help you to authenticate a vintage bag. [3] X Research source
  • There are many different letter codes to indicate the region of a country that the bag was made in, so you might have to look up the code to figure out if it matches the "made" in stamp. For example, "MI," "SD," "TH," and "VI" are all letter codes for different regions of France.

Step 3 Ensure that the pattern is even throughout the bag.

  • Note that if the logo is hidden or cut off any where it is likely a knockoff. The other designs on a Louis Vuitton bag might be cut off at some places, but the LV logo will not be cut off on an authentic bag. [5] X Research source

Step 4 Look for upside down LV’s on the back of the bag.

  • Keep in mind that this only applies to Louis Vuitton bags that feature the logo on them. If your bag lacks this, then it won’t be a reliable way to authenticate the bag.

Examining the Hardware and Other Details

Step 1 Examine the overall quality of the bag’s hardware and zipper.

  • Clean, precise printing on the hardware. You should be able to easily make out the words Louis Vuitton on the bag’s zipper pull and other hardware features.
  • LV logos printed on the snaps if the bag has snaps. If the bag has snaps, but they don’t have a logo on them, then it is likely a fake.

Step 2 Look for a patina on the bag’s handles if it’s vintage.

  • For example, if the bag was supposedly made in the 1990s, then the handles should be a deep shade of brown. If they are still a light tan or white, then the bag is a fake.

Tip : If the bag’s handles are wrapped in plastic when you get it, then it is likely a fake.

Step 3 Look for 5 mustard-yellow stitches across the top of each handle.

  • For example, if the thread is brown or black, it’s likely a fake.
  • The stitching should look very neat and even as well. If the stitching is sloppy, the bag is likely a knockoff. [10] X Research source

Step 4 Inspect the interior lining to see if it’s brown canvas.

  • Depending on the specific design, a real Louis Vuitton bag may be lined with other textiles, such as cross-grain leather, polyester, or microfiber suede.

Evaluating the Seller

Step 1 Research the seller before you buy.

  • Avoid sellers with negative feedback, zero feedback, or private feedback.
  • Avoid sellers who have a no return policy as this indicates that they don't guarantee the quality of their products.

Tip : Ask for additional pictures from the seller if there aren't many or if the photos don’t show the details that you need to authenticate the bag. They may be using pictures of real Louis Vuitton purses to sell fakes. [13] X Research source

Step 2 Be wary of sellers offering a bag at a considerably discounted price.

  • You can find used Louis Vuitton bags for less than brand new ones, but these bags may also be quite expensive if they are rare or coveted by collectors.

Step 3 Avoid sellers offering

  • Also, don’t buy Louis Vuitton purses from street vendors, since the company does not permit street vendors to carry their merchandise. These bags are most likely fake.

With so many skillfully made fakes on the market, it can be hard to tell a fake Louis Vuitton purse from the real deal. However, you may be able to spot a fake by looking at features like the stamps and the pattern on the bag. For example, a real Louis Vuitton purse should always include a stamp pressed directly into the leather that says “Louis Vuitton” and states where the bag was made. If the stamp is missing or the logo doesn’t match those on authentic Louis Vuitton bags, it’s probably a fake. You can also check the date code located near the opening of the bag. This should have a regional code that matches where the bag was made, such as MI, SD, or TH, which all represent regions in France. Additionally, look at the pattern on the bag and make sure it’s straight, even, and mirrored on both sides of the bag. On a real Louis Vuitton bag, the LV logo should be upside down on the back of the bag and right side up on the front. For tips on how to identify a fake by examining the bag’s hardware, read on! How to Spot a Fake Louis Vuitton Bag

Louis Vuitton is one the most iconic and best-known luxury handbag brands in the world.

Unfortunately, because of its well-known status and loyal following, there are a ton of fake Louis Vuitton bags out there.

louis vuitton neverfull peels

In fact, Louis Vuitton is one of the most counterfeited brands in the world. So today, I’m sharing how to spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag so you can easily spot the difference between a fake vs. real Louis Vuitton.

Many of us have to save up for designer bags and are now shopping the resale market for these handbags. So it’s important to be able to spot fake Louis Vuitton handbags. After all, who wants to spend $1K plus on counterfeit items that’s not actually real?!

Here, I’m sharing eight of the most common ways to spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag below.

Shop Louis Vuitton Bags

Louis Vuitton offers many different lines of bags from the Louis Vuitton Neverfull bag range, the Damier Ebiene canvas bags, the Speedy bag and many more. And though these are all different designs, spotting a fake Louis Vuitton purse is similar no matter what style bag you get.

Unfortunately, counterfeit bags are getting harder and harder to spot. Use this guide to help ensure that what you’re getting is the real deal.

The heat stamp that reads “Louis Vuitton Paris” on the inside pocket of the bag is a great way to spot an authentic Louis Vuitton handbag. Before we dive into the specifics of what to look for with the stamp, you also want to look out for authenticity cards.

Those are a big red flag when it comes to spotting a fake because Louis Vuitton doesn’t send authenticity cards. They may send some sort of card within the dust bag listing different facts about the bag. But it will never be about authenticity.

The heat stamp basically acts like an authenticity card in and of itself. The font will tell you a lot about genuine bags like:

  • The horizontal line on the letter “L” has a short tail.
  • The letter “O” is very round – NOT oval-like. It also looks proportionally larger than the “L”.
  • The two “T” letters are almost touching.
  • The lettering will be crisp and nearly perfect in how it’s aligned.

The letters will all be capital letters, too.

You get what you pay for with luxury bags, down to the stitching.

louis vuitton travel bag real vs fake

With genuine bags, the stitching is nearly perfect with no odd spacing, loose strings, etc. In fact, the same number of stitches should be found on each side of the bag.

The color of the string can also help you spot the real thing.

A genuine Louis Vuitton bag will have a muted yellow color or brown stitching on the leather.

A fake LV bag will sometimes have a very bright thread. This is typically a dead giveaway that you have a fake handbag.

Another one of the best ways to spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag is to look at Louis Vuitton’s hardware.

Authentic Louis Vuitton bags have hardware made of solid brass. The hardware is also evenly colored.

aged louis vuitton hardware

Because the hardware is brass-coated, it’s natural for it to change color over time. It can even take on a greenish hue!

The hardware includes things like the zipper, zipper pull and other accent pieces.

Real LV bags have the LV or “Louis Vuitton” logo on every single piece of hardware from the zipper, to the feet of the purse to the rivets. Even the hardware inside of the bag should have the logo.

Speaking of zippers, another critical thing to keep in mind is how well the zippers work. Try them out. If they don’t glide well, then it might be one of the telltale signs the bag is fake.

If you’re paying for a luxury brand handbag, that zipper better glide like butter.

The next way you can spot a fake bag is the quality of the leather.

A real Louis Vuitton bag is generally made of leather. Some types of LV bags are made of coated canvas or other exotic animals too. The leather is soft to the touch and high-quality.

Some Louis Vuitton bags are also made with one continuous piece of leather. So one side of the bag might have upside-down logos. Be aware of that if you think that doesn’t look like the real thing.

Louis Vuitton uses Vachetta leather for the trim of its bags. This type of leather naturally darkens, also known as patina, as the bag ages.

If the Vachetta leather doesn’t naturally darken, then you know the bag is probably a fake bag.

Also, look for the deep red/burgundy edge that lines the handles on an authentic bag. This will also change color over time, and shouldn’t be a bright red.

A real LV bag has high-quality materials all the way down to the lining. However, depending on the type of bag you purchase, depends on the color and material of the lining found inside the bag.

You can find a variety of colors from a deep red to tan with varying materials like leather and microsuede.

Before you purchase a real LV bag, be sure to know what color and type of lining that bag is supposed to have. That way you know what to look for.

Another important aspect on how to spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag is the dust bag that handbag comes in. An authentic LV bag comes in a dust bag that only has the LV logo or name on the bag itself.

There is nothing else on these like a model number, country code or letter code on the bag. It has a minimalist design and acts as a dust cover for your specific bag.

The dust bag will also be beige in color—not white. You can see the difference here in this photo.

The dust bag on the left is a fake LV dust bag while the dust bag on the right is much warmer and more of a yellow tone.

The font is also dark brown on the authentic LV dust bag while the fake one has black font. They may be subtle differences, but they’re still important to pay attention to!

The easiest way and quickest ways to spot a fake Louis Vuitton product is by the logo. The LV logo is one of the most recognized logos because of its household name in the designer industry.

Authentic Louis Vuitton logos have three distinct designs plus the logo. They will never be crooked, misaligned and always look symmetrical. Additionally, the three designs and logo are in the same pattern throughout the bag.

Louis Vuitton handbags do not have a serial number but instead, each one has a date code. Especially if you are shopping for more vintage bags.

Since the early 1980s, Louis Vuitton began including date codes on each bag produced. They can be hard to find but usually are inside the bag. The date code tells you where and when the bag was manufactured.

The date code begins with two letters. These letters represent the country that it was made in. For example, if the beginning two letters were SF, that means that your bag was manufactured in France.

Following the two letters are four numbers. These numbers represent the date the bag was made. The 1st and 3rd numbers represent the week or month the bag was made.

Between 2007-2021, the 1st and 3rd numbers represented the week of the year. Between 1990-2006, the 1st and 3rd numbers represented the month of the year.

The 2nd and 4th numbers are the last two digits of the year the bag was made.

So for example, if the date code on a bag was SF0028 that means the bag was made in France in the 2nd week of 2008.

Confusing? Yah. You can try an authenticator service if you’re really concerned. Or an online date code authenticator like this one .

Beginning in March 2021, Louis Vuitton did away with the date code and began including microchips in the handbags that store information like what the bag is made of.

There is no personal information shared. Just specifically details about the bag. This chip can be scanned at Louis Vuitton stores and cannot be duplicated or modified.

With these eight basic ways to spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag, I hope this helps you better determine if a bag is real or not!

Great info! Lots of attention to detail… I have an Alma PM handbag. It’s currently being repaired by the Louis Vuitton folks… I probably won’t get it until November, it’s been almost 5 months since I sent it in.

Thanks, Charlotte! I had to have the lining replaced in my LV Neverfull. It took awhile BUT when I picked it up it was packaged in a new box and bag and felt brand new!

How to Spot a Fake Louis Vuitton

louis vuitton travel bag real vs fake

The ability to tell the difference between an authentic Louis Vuitton bag and one of those ubiquitous imposters “comes with time,” says Diane D’Amato, director of luxury at Heritage Auctions . For D’Amato, who spent years with Louis Vuitton before moving to Heritage, the learning curve was gradual. She describes “being surrounded by incredible product and touching it and feeling it and looking at it and, eventually, just knowing.”

But if at this very moment you have your eye on the prize — a classic or playful Speedy 25 Bandoulière , perhaps — it’s important to know how to identify a fake. So as Louis Vuitton’s legal team plays whack-a-mole with fraudsters across the globe, we’ve compiled an extensive list of features that will help you identify counterfeit bags as you choose the first — or the next — icon for your collection . Take a look at the visual summary below, and continue down the page for detailed explanations for a detailed Louis Vuitton replica check.

louis vuitton travel bag real vs fake

1. Look at the Logos

A photograph of a Louis Vuitton Monogram Artsy MM bag.

Consider the LV monogram logo. Perhaps the most recognizable feature of a Louis Vuitton bag, it was first incorporated more than a century ago in the hopes of staving off counterfeits. You can be sure that Louis Vuitton takes the greatest care with its presentation, whether it is only on the hardware of a bag or all over . There is no tilting of the interlocked LV letters nor is there smudging, blurred edges or greenish tints. “The colors may be off in counterfeits,” says D’Amato, “because they’re not going to get the saturation and the color just perfect.”

The Louis Vuitton logo might look simple enough, but this is where you can spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag quickly. On an authentic LV logo, The letter L sits lower than the V, creating a perfect overlay.

When it comes to monograms, the LV monogram should be continuous, without breaks or interruptions. It’s combined with three distinct quatrefoil designs that repeat in the same order together with the LV monogram logo across the outside of the bag. If you notice irregular spacing, interruptions or a misaligned pattern along a seam, it’s likely that the bag is a fake.

The Damier monogram is another signature Louis Vuitton logo design, also called the Damier or “checkerboard.”  It’s available in multiple color combinations, like the Damier Ebene and the Damier Azur .

A more recent version of the classic monogram logo is the Monogram Vernis collection made from glossy patent calfskin leather. The logo design on these models is embossed into the bag’s outer layer.

Another important detail to know is that specific styles are made with one continuous panel of canvas or leather, such as the Speedy and Keepall . Because of this technique, the logo will be upside-down on one side. This will never occur, however, in bags made of two pieces of material connected at the base, like the Neverfull Monogram .

2. Inspect the Handles and Piping

A photograph of a Louis Vuitton

The handles and piping of Louis Vuitton handbags are constructed from vachetta leather , a natural-toned cowhide that deepens to a rich honey color with age. “As soon as they’re exposed to air, they start to change color,” D’Amato explains, “that’s how the handles darken. A non-authentic bag is not going to do that in the same way as an authentic bag.” So if you’re looking at a vintage bag with bright, natural handles, move on.

The piping is the leather trim that runs along the edges of a bag. On a real LV bag, the piping is made from the same high-quality leather as the handles and should match them exactly in color and texture.

The handles are often framed by a contrasting burgundy edge trim that, like the handles themselves, will darken over time. Check for flaws, a plastic appearance or a painted texture in the contrast trim.

Finally, check the color and the age of the bag — if you’re looking at a vintage bag with fresh, bright red piping, it’s probably a fake.

3. Expect Straight Stitching

A close up photograph of the meticulous stitching on a Louis Vuitton Keepall Travel Bag from 1995.

Expect perfection when it comes to the stitching on a Louis Vuitton bag — anything less won’t leave the workshop floor. The stitching on any LV bag is a good indicator of whether a bag might be a fake.

The stitches on an authentic bag are flawless — perfectly straight and even. The number of stitches will not change, so without exception, all Louis Vuitton bags should have the same number of stitches on both sides of the bag. For example, authentic Louis Vuitton Alma , Speedy and Neverfull bags have exactly five stitches across each of the tabs where the handles are secured. This is always the same — Vuitton matches the number of stitches to the location. So remember: Perfection does not deviate.

4. Scrutinize the Hardware

A close up photograph of damaged hardware on a fake Louis Vuitton bag.

Often on a fake Louis Vuitton bag, “the hardware just looks cheaper,” says D’Amato. A real luxury bag provides a pleasure of touch that counterfeiters simply can’t reproduce. So if the hardware is rough or uneven, feels flimsy, hollow or even (gasp!) plastic, the bag is most likely a fake.

All hardware pieces on an authentic Louis Vuitton bag, from clasp to rivet, bear the brand’s engravings, crisp and clear. The metal is durable, evenly colored and will not have an overly shiny gold tone. The color of the hardware inside the bag and outside should be the same, and no piece of hardware should be faded or discolored.

Examine the LV signature monogram on the zipper pull — it should be sharp and clear. The zipper puller should match the rest of the hardware in color, have a solid weight and run smooth and easy as it opens and closes. If the zipper puller feels flimsy or it’s difficult to pull, consider it a major red flag.

Finally, Louis Vuitton’s hardware is usually in brass, golden brass or silvery metal (although matte finishings do exist.) Whenever possible, check louisvuitton.com to ensure that the hardware on the bag you’re considering is legit.

5. Pay Attention to the Lining

A photograph of the interior lining of a Louis Vuitton Neverfull bag.

Although Louis Vuitton often uses different linings for different collections, Monogram canvas bags are generally lined in brown cotton, and Damier Ebene Canvas bags are historically lined in red microfiber. But if you’re considering a specific bag, do your research — there are a number of exceptions to this rule.

Pay attention to details that counterfeiters often overlook. Find out whether a particular lining was actually used in the year a bag was produced. For example, 2017’s Neverfull Monogram has a tan interior with thin brown stripes. You’ll want to know this if 30 years from now you find yourself considering a vintage 2017 Neverfull Monogram. Neverfull Limited Edition bags surprise with different linings, so it’s important to do research on the exact model and collection or limited edition you’ve got your eyes on.

Finally, counterfeiters seem to believe that Louis Vuitton bags look best with brown or tan suede interiors, as you’ll often see these in knockoffs. Fortunately, you’ll never see brown or tan suede lining in a real Vuitton — the company has never lined its bags with either of these materials. It’s an easy way to identify a possible fake.

6. Study the Stamp

A photograph of an authentic Louis Vuitton stamp on a Miranda Bag.

Study the font Louis Vuitton uses to stamp its bags. One of the most notable details is the wide, perfectly round O. The L has an especially short tail, and the two Ts in Vuitton almost touch. While counterfeiters have gotten better at reproducing the font, it’s still commonly awry — and this is a mistake you can easily recognize, if you’re prepared. The stitching around the stamp should be as perfect as it is throughout the bag — no loose threads, frayed ends or asymmetrical lines.

Look for the registered trademark ®, which should be perfectly centered above the V and the U in Vuitton. And don’t be thrown off if a bag is not made in France — Vuitton also manufactures its bags in Spain, Germany, Italy and even the United States.

7. Watch for Hang Tags

Yves Forestier/Getty Images

Louis Vuitton will not wrap plastic or paper around handles or hardware in order to protect them. The company will not put hang tags on bags and of course it will never, ever misspell its own name.

Louis Vuitton dust covers are simple, made of 100 percent cotton with neatly finished seams. Earlier versions are light tan with an LV logo; more recently, the name has been spelled out on a pale saffron background. No other text will appear.

And don’t be swayed by a receipt, which unfortunately proves nothing. If a bag can be copied, surely a piece of paper can, as well — and an authentic receipt can be paired with a fake bag.

8. Check the Date Codes

A close up photograph of a date stamp on the inside of a Louis Vuitton bag.

In the early 1980s, Louis Vuitton began including date codes to identify a bag’s place of origin and date of manufacture. This practice was continued until March 2021, when Vuitton switched to including a microchip into their products.

For all products made before March 2021, you can use the date code to cross check where a bag was produced. For example, if a bag is stamped, “Made in Germany,” the date code should include LP or OL, as you can see in the list below. Anything else is likely careless counterfeiting. However, even if the two do match, your search for aberrations should continue. Not all counterfeiters are sloppy.

Date codes are found inside the bag, often embossed on a tag in a side seam. They can be difficult to locate and may even wear away in older bags.

The following are examples and explanations of date codes and how they have evolved:

Do All Louis Vuitton Bags Have a Serial Number?

All LV bags prior to March 2021 have date codes, which are a little different than serial numbers. Date codes help identify the year and country of origin of the bag.

If a bag was manufactured after March 2021, it will have an NFC tag, a type of microchip, embedded in the bag. It’s invisible to the eye and too small to feel by hand. It contains a unique identifier that can be scanned by Louis Vuitton personnel to reveal the information for each specific bag.

Some counterfeiters, especially the really good ones, will be aware of this change, so never rely on the date codes — or their absence — as the sole proof of a bag’s authenticity.

Some Final Words of Advice

A photograph of the two-tone bottom of a Louis Vuitton Monogram Reverse Giant Onthego GM.

When buying a Louis Vuitton bag online, ask for pictures of the front, back and base, as well as of the lining, the date code and the embossed stamp. Be suspicious if a seller is advertising with borrowed pictures or with ones watermarked by another site. Pay attention to the seller’s reviews and ratings, which can give you important information about a seller and help you sniff out a scam before you waste your time even looking.

What Does a Real Louis Vuitton Bag Smell Like?

Use your olfactory senses to sniff out potential fakers. If you get a whiff of plastic or chemicals, it may not be the real deal. Authentic Louis Vuitton bags will smell like genuine leather — or just clean, like nothing at all.

Shopping for Louis Vuitton online is a lot like online dating — false advertising does occur, so the beauty you may be admiring might not be the same one that appears at your door. Choose reputable sites and sellers with a proven track record, and don’t be afraid to ask questions and push for answers. And, also like online dating, if something doesn’t feel right, move on.

Founded in 1854, Louis Vuitton is one of the oldest luxury fashion retailers in the world. The French fashion house gained immense popularity from its luxury trunks, which featured the brand’s signature treated canvas.

The world-renowned LV monogram we recognize today was also a feature on  Louis Vuitton’s travel trunks  when they were created in 1896. The monogram and other subtle features were put in place because counterfeiters had already started trying to produce replicas of the iconic trunks. But this is a handbag guide; why are we talking about Louis Vuitton trunks, you may ask?

The answer is simple: the qualities that made LV’s travel trunks so desirable are still present in today’s range of LV handbags. In fact, the treated canvas used on those vintage trunks is the very same used on LV’s signature handbags today such as the Speedy or Neverfull.

The incredible quality and durability are what makes Louis Vuitton handbags so sought-after and expensive. With this demand and exclusivity comes the temptation to counterfeiters to sell their cheaply made fakes for quick illegal profit.

Louis Vuitton has made so many different types of handbags and travel accessories over the years that it would require a book to detail authentication steps for each bag. However, if there is one thing that Louis Vuitton has remained consistent with over the past 150 years, it’s the quality of the materials, hardware and craftsmanship that goes into making each and every bag.

Getting to know the qualities that most, if not all LV handbags share is a great way to weed out the fakes that you are likely to come across when shopping for your next Louis. The following authentication steps apply to LV handbags ranging from 20-30 years vintage to LV bags made in recent years.

1. Examine the Shape, Proportions and Posture

When you purchase a luxury bag like a Louis Vuitton, you are paying for top-notch quality. How the bag looks is an incredibly important first step when authenticating an LV product , because you should immediately know that slouching (when the item is resting), creasing, strange proportions and an otherwise imperfect appearance is a huge red flag.

The treated fabric that the items are made from should not appear to be extremely soft and pliable.

Brand new Louis Vuittons should be perfect: the handles should be sturdy and symmetrical. The bag shouldn’t slouch, meaning it is flopping over and sagging because there is no internal structure to support the leather sides to keep it upright.

Pre-owned Louis Vuitton handbags  should still retain the same qualities as they had when brand new, albeit they may have some patina depending on the age (many Louis Vuitton lovers actually prefer the golden honey patina color that can occur after several decades of use.)

In other words, Louis Vuitton is unique from other designer labels in that their handbags are extremely durable and will retain their shape and rigid posture. You should also note that the bag’s posture and shape has a lot to do with the unique material it’s made from.

Caution: If a brand new or a pre-owned Louis Vuitton bag slouches, chances are it's not real.

2. Look Closely at the Stitching Quality and Pattern:

Just like everything else on a Louis Vuitton bag, the stitching should be flawless. Ensure that the stitching looks even and symmetrical, and that there is no fraying or other signs of cheap thread having been used

Authentic Louis Vuitton bags are hand-stitched. To be more specific; there should be a slight angle to each stitch – be wary of any bag that has perfectly straight stitches! This is a sign it was machine-made and an imitation.

Caution: Perfectly straight stitches on a Louis Vuitton bag were likely machine-made, which means it may be a counterfeit.

Another important characteristic of  authentic Louis Vuitton handbags  is the color of the stitching.  Louis Vuitton coats its threads in a special type of resin to add extra durability and weather-resistance; this resin also gives authentic LV stitching a distinct mustard-yellow color.

Counterfeits will frequently use brighter, synthetic yellow or orange thread for their stitching and this is an easy red-flag to spot. Like the Vachetta leather trim often found on LV monogram canvas handbags, the resin on authentic LV handbags will also develop a patina with age, but this will only act to darken the hue.

Finally, stitch count is important when conducting a Louis Vuitton authenticity check. Certain areas, like the point where the handles attach to the handbag, should have 3 or 5 stitches going along the top of the tab attaching the handles to the handbag, depending on the model. You can use the official LV website or photos of authenticated bags to match them to yours.

4. inspect the stamping, shape and size of the font:.

Another feature that Louis Vuitton keeps consistent among all of its handbags is the stamping, or embossing. Inside the handbag you will find a leather label with a “Louis Vuitton Paris” stamp. Be sure to take a very close look at the font shape, spacing and the quality of the stamp itself, because this is one thing counterfeiters very often get wrong!

The first thing you should notice is the style of the letters. On authentic Louis Vuitton stamps, the font is as follows: the “L” has a short base, the “Os” are big and round (not oval!), the two “Ts” are very close together - almost to the point where they appear to touch (TT) but not quite, and the font style is thin and sharp.

Caution: The two fonts that Louis Vuitton regularly use are called Futura and Austin Roman, but it is not that simple. They use a specific style within the font family, and the LV logo is completely bespoke, which means the font used for that should not match any generic font.

The stitching around the stamp should also be clean and consistent: loose threads, uneven stitches or an asymmetrical stamp are all warning signs of a fake handbag.

For a quick and easy authenticity check on an LV stamp, examine the relationship between the L and O in Louis, as well as the ® symbol. If there is an obvious, noticeable gap between the L and O, this is a red flag.

The L and O are very close together on authentic LV stamps. Also, you can check the ® symbol for its placement. It should be symmetrical right in between the V and U in “Vuitton”. If it appears shifted too far from the center line between the V and U, this is likely a fake.

Caution:  Style of letters are an easy give away when it comes to counterfeiting. Distant “Ts” and oval-shaped “Os” are an instant red flag of a fake.

How To Spot A Fake Louis Vuitton Bag: Our 6 Top Tips

' src=

Louis Vuitton bags are iconic and a must-have for any fashionista – but how can you spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag from a real one? Don’t worry, we’re here to help answer that question!

Authentic Louis Vuitton bags are some of the most sought-after handbags in the world thanks to their stunning designs and the famous LV logo monogram. Unfortunately, this does mean that LV bags are some of the most replicated in the world, and there are plenty of counterfeit bags knocking about.

In this article, we’ll share everything that you need to know if you are trying to work out if a Louis Vuitton handbag that you own is real, or if you’ve been sold a fake.

Brief History Of Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton began his well-known brand by making trunks in 19th-century France. Vuitton walked 292 miles to Paris from his hometown and was taken on as an apprentice, learning how to make durable trunks for luxury travel.

In 1858, Louis Vuitton made a name for himself by creating the first LV flat-top trunk – these were much more practical for travel as they could be stacked but were also waterproof.

Even in the late 19 th century, Louis Vuitton needed to prevent his popular products from being counterfeit copies. Hand-painted patterns, including a stripe and the now-famous Damier print, covered Louis Vuitton items so that these sought-after products couldn’t be copied.

Louis Vuitton Cannes bag

Many Louis Vuitton bags proved so popular that they are still around today, with only minimal changes from when they were first introduced. The Speedy bag is one of these beloved LV bags. It was first introduced in 1930 in three different sizes, as a more convenient version of the Keepall. Later, Audrey Hepburn requested a smaller version of the Speedy, so the 25 size was added to the collection.

Two years later, the Noé was added to the collection of Louis Vuitton bags as one of the first bucket bags available to 1930s shoppers.

The Noé was designed to carry five bottles of champagne at the request of one of France’s best champagne producers. The remarkable design has guaranteed that it has stood the test of time to remain in Louis Vuitton boutiques still to this day.

Another favorite LV bag was also designed in the 1930s – the Alma. This momentous bag was personally commissioned by Coco Chanel. The beautifully curved design was inspired by the Pont de l’Alma bridge and was initially a larger bag, called the Alma Voyage.

By 1934 Coco Chanel agreed to a small version of the Alma being released and this stunning bag has remained a part of the Louis Vuitton cannon to the present day.

Perhaps one of the most famous tote bags out there, the Louis Vuitton Neverfull, was only designed and released in 2007, under the leadership of creative director Marc Jacobs. The timeless design and totally practical details are mixed with a little bit of the Louis Vuitton heritage to create one of the brand’s best-selling bags.

How To spot a fake Louis Vuitton bag

While we’ve done our best to describe the most important differences you need to watch out for when looking out for a fake LV bag, we understand that sometimes, a video describing the differences can be invaluable. So, we’ve also embedded a helpful comparison video from  Emma Anders below.

YouTube video player

1. The Silhouette

The first thing you should notice when it comes to a fake bag is an imperfect silhouette. Red flags include a bag that is slouching, creased, or has unnatural proportions, meaning it probably is a fake.

The top craftsmanship associated with Louis Vuitton products means that genuine Louis Vuitton bags are produced perfectly with sturdy handles and a strong and symmetrical shape; they should stay this way even after years and years of use.

2. Stitching

Real Louis Vuitton handbags will have flawless stitching – the authentic bags are hand-stitched, meaning there should be a slight angle on the stitches to show that it has been done by hand. If the stitches are perfectly straight, frayed, or unsymmetrical, this could be a sign it is a fake LV bag.

The color of the stitches will also help you to work out if it is the real deal – Louis Vuitton makes sure to coat its threads in resin to guarantee durability, which gives the stitching a mustard-yellow color. Often, fake Louis Vuitton handbags will try to recreate this color but instead, the threads are a synthetic yellow or orange.

You can also count the number of stitches to check to see if it is a real bag – the top of the tab where the handles join to the body of the bag should have 3 or 5 stitches, depending on the style of the bag. An even number or any more or less will indicate that this is a fake Louis Vuitton bag.

3. The inside Stamp

All LV bags will have a leather label that has a heat stamp Louis Vuitton Paris logo – this is one of the best ways to see if your bag is an authentic LV bag. Inside of the bag, this label should be easy to find and if you look closely at the spacing and font of the stamp you should be able to determine if it is the real thing.

The L of Louis should have a short base and the O should sit close to the L – if there is a noticeable gap between the L and O, it could be one of the fake Louis Vuitton bags.

Another easy way to check the authenticity of this stamp is to check the placement of the ® symbol. This ® should sit directly above the center of the V and U in Vuitton. If this symbol is not central and closer to the V or U, then the handbag is probably a counterfeit.

4. Serial Number

A genuine Louis Vuitton bag will have a serial number that is formatted in a date and location system so you can work out where and when your luxury bag was made. The serial number will begin with two capital letters; this is in reference to where the bag is made, and then four numbers indicate when the bag was made.

The first and third numbers refer to the week of the year the bag was made, while the second and fourth numbers will let you know the year the bag was made. This serial number system was brought in during the 1980s, so vintage bags will not have the same serial number format.

However, some counterfeit bags, known as super-fakes, try to replicate the serial number so it is worth checking the serial number alongside other aspects so you are 100% sure you have an authentic bag.

5. The LV monogram

The monogram pattern is an instantly-recognizable element of a Louis Vuitton item and is something you should check for authenticity.

The placement of the monogram should be careful and consistent, with no elements that are cut off or crooked. There should be no seams in the middle of the bag as the leather is in one piece, so the Monogram should flow seamlessly over the entire bag.

6. Authenticity cards

Another red flag is if the handbag comes with an authenticity card. A real Louis Vuitton bag would never come with an authenticity card, so this is one surefire way to see if you have one of the counterfeit bags.

Although inside a real LV bag, you may find a small cream card with the name of the style of bag and a barcode – this is not a card of authenticity.

Louis Vuitton Materials

Not only do the materials show how well-made and durable Louis Vuitton handbags are, but they can also act as a good way of showing a real or fake Louis Vuitton product.

Firstly, Louis Vuitton bags should feel smooth and soft, displaying the quality of the continuous piece of leather that the handbag is made from. If the fabric feels stiff or rough, or maybe even smells of chemicals, these are telltale signs that this is a fake handbag.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Louis Vuitton (@louisvuitton)

While the monogram canvas that is often used to make the Neverfull bags is luxurious. it is not leather, and thus it should not have any leather grains. Some counterfeit items use fake leather to replicate this canvas because they are not able to treat the canvas in the same way that Louis Vuitton does.

Although LV’s canvas bags are not made from leather, they all have a vachetta leather trim. When your bag is new, it will be light in color and even over the entire bag. Over time, exposed areas of this vachetta leather will darken to give the bag an authentic patina.

If you are buying your Louis Vuitton bag on the secondhand market, make sure to check that this leather trim has darkened in exposed areas, but remained a lighter color in more concealed areas.

Our top picks

If you are looking to buy a Louis Vuitton bag, these classics are some of our favorites and a guaranteed to never go out of style.

1. The Speedy

louis vuitton travel bag real vs fake

The Speedy is a classic from the Louis Vuitton cannon – the stunning round shape is totally individual and completely timeless.

The LV Speedy is also available in different sizes, the 25 was created upon the request of Audrey Hepburn, while the Nano was created more recently for those customers who wanted something a little more compact. Both are great options if you are looking to add a first Louis Vuitton bag to your collection.

2. The Neonoe

Louis Vuitton MM monogram Neonoe bag with black straps

One of the first bucket bags out there, the Neonoe was added to the LV bag collection in 1932. This roomy bag is perfect if you like a little more space but still want to look effortlessly stylish.

The classic LV canvas is accented by the peach cream accents on this more traditional example of the Neonoe bag . Or, if you are looking for something a little unique, there is also the beautiful summer cream option , with an oversized, ombre LV monogram.

3. The Onthego

louis vuitton travel bag real vs fake

The Onthego is a more recent design that Louis Vuitton has added to their collection of irresistible bags. If you are looking for something a little more structured, then the Onthego is perfect for you.

The brown and beige edition has an oversized LV monogram on the bag, then the handles are decorated with the reverse monogram – a completely stunning detail. For something a little more neutral, the Onthego in Tourterelle is perfect. The monogram is subtly embossed into buttery-soft leather for a more delicate finish.

If you are looking to buy a Louis Vuitton handbag secondhand, make sure to check the little details to make sure you are getting a genuine bag. If you are buying your LV bag from a Louis Vuitton boutique, you can guarantee that this is an authentic bag.

However, if you buy your new bag from a resale sites like Fashionphile, be sure to check the stitching, quality of the leather, serial number, and Louis Vuitton stamp to be sure you have your hands on the real deal. After that, just enjoy your stunning new Louis Vuitton bag!

Smart Ways to Spot a Fake Louis Vuitton Bag

There's a reason designer handbags like Louis Vuittons are so popular. Walking around with one of your own can make you feel totally luxurious (and is bound to get you lots of compliments).

What can be tricky is knowing if you're looking at an authentic bag or a fake replica. If you're thinking of treating yourself to one of these expensive bags, you'll want to be sure your money is going towards the real thing. Don't sweat it — we have some details on how to tell the difference between a fake Louis Vuitton vs. a real one.

How to Spot a Fake Louis Vuitton vs. a Real One

With the popularity of designer bags at an all-time high, more counterfeit bags are hitting the streets and online auctions. It's a good idea to do your research before you buy — these bags aren't a cheap investment.

Luckily there are quite a few things you can look at to help you see the  difference between a genuine and a fake handbag .

An authentic Louis Vuitton bag has the following characteristics:

  • Quality Materials: Louis Vuitton bags are expensive. They are made out of costly materials such as top-quality leather, boa, crocodile, lambskin, and camel skin. Fakes are made from pleather and vinyl; they may feel rough and stiff. A real Louis Vuitton is smooth and feels soft.
  • Trim: Louis Vuitton trim is done in Vachetta leather and tans naturally as the bag ages. Most fakes are done in a light tan trim or a fake aged trim that will not change with age.
  • Monogram placement: Monogram placement is done carefully and is consistent on pieces. It will not be crooked or cut off. It will look the same on each style of bag. The leather is one solid piece that continues to the front from the back. You will never see a seam in the middle of a bag.
  • Tags: These are never attached to a Louis Vuitton bag. They may come with tags, but they are simply placed in the purse or dust bag. Tags are never attached with plastic or pins.
  • Hardware: The hardware used on the bag is also an indicator. Fake bags will often have painted gold plastic whereas an authentic will have gold or brass metal hardware imprinted with the trademark LV logo.
  • Dust Bags: All bags come with a soft dust bag. This bag is done in a soft tan color and features the Louis Vuitton logo in the center. The dust bag can be done in a drawstring or envelope style.

Know the Bag

Check the details of the bag against the original style. In addition to the basic features to look out for, there are some other obvious tells. If you're looking for a Speedy bag and find one that has gold feet on the bottom, steer clear. This style never has feet. The Speedy is smooth from front to back and does not have extra hardware.

Beware of Extra Accessories

Many LV fakes come with extra accessories. Authentic Louis Vuitton bags do not. The Neverfull has the option to add a shoulder strap, however, that is not a standard accessory. The Neverfull comes with two straps that can be carried over the arm. Fake versions may have a shoulder strap attached or as an accessory.

Check Handles and Stitching

Examine the workmanship carefully. All Louis Vuitton bags have precise stitching that is durable and will not show any loose threads. It's just another part of what makes these bags so high-quality.

The handles of each bag are seamed together with a special glue that bonds the leather. You will not see any sloppy craftsmanship or loose stitching. If you do, this is a pretty clear sign that the bag isn't real.

The lettering on your bag can be quite telling about its authenticity:

  • Wherever you see Louis Vuitton spelled out, check to make sure that the O is round, not oval-shaped. Many fake versions will use oval-shaped O's instead of round ones.
  • Another mistake that fakes often make is with the letter L immediately before the O. The L should be positioned very close to the O and does not fully extend on the bottom.
  • The name Louis Vuitton is almost always spelled out in all capital letters. When it's not, it's done in a distinctive script. Zecraft shows what the script looks like  — and it's very hard to replicate.

Watch Out for Authenticity Certificates

Another sign that a bag is fake is the authenticity card. Real Louis Vuitton bags don't come with a certificate of authenticity. You may find a cream-colored card with the style name of the bag and a bar code inside, but never a certificate. Many fake bags come with a certificate to try to convince consumers that they're real.

Every Louis Vuitton bag comes with a date code . An authentic bag won't have a serial number but should have a date code to identify where and when the bag was made. Keep in mind that these codes are not always easy to find. These date codes are usually stamped on a leather tag inside the bag or on the actual lining. Louis Vuitton date codes consist of both numbers and letters. Depending on when the bag was made this can vary. For example:

  • Bags made prior to 1980 do not have date codes.
  • Early to late 80s, the codes consisted of three to four numbers immediately followed by two letters. The first two numbers represent the year it was made, and the 3rd and/or 4th are the month. The last two letters indicate what country the bag was made in.
  • From 1990 to 2006, date codes contained two letters followed by four numbers. The letters indicated the location of the factory where the bag was made and the numbers indicated the month and year.
  • From 2007 to the present, bags have date codes with two letters followed by four numbers. The letters are the location where the bag was made and the numbers are the year.

Popular Replicated Patterns and Styles

There are many different bag styles and patterns in the Louis Vuitton collection, and certain styles are more likely to be replicated than others. These include (but aren't limited to):

  • Signature Monogram Canvas: The most popular pattern is the Signature Monogram Canvas . This pattern features tan LV logos on a rich dark brown leather background. The pattern is never reversed or done with additional colors.
  • Takashi Murakami Collection: Another highly replicated bag is the one done by designer Takashi Murakami. In 2003, Murakami partnered with Marc Jacobs and released this unique collection. The bags were done in white leather and featured 33 different colors of the signature LV logos. The Cherry Blossom bag was a variation done in the Signature Monogram. It had red cherry blossoms throughout with a small face in the center of each blossom. You will not see other flowers or designs on real bags.
  • Damier Graphite Canvas : A newer style print is the Damier Graphite canvas. This style features the classic block pattern in black and grey. It has an urban feel and is more edgy than traditional styles. You won't see other variations to this print like bold colors,  and the block pattern always lines up on the edges and seams.
  • Speedy: This is Louis Vuitton's most popular bag. It is a simple design with two rounded handles at the top and a full zipper closure. This one shouldn't come with a shoulder strap and has a gold padlock. There is one small pocket inside the bag. The Speedy comes in several sizes: 25, 30, 35 and 40. You will not find it in any other size.
  • Neverfull: This bag is one of the most functional in the collection. It comes in MM, PM, and GM versions. Each version is a different size but is styled the same. The Neverfull is a tote-style bag with slim leather handles. The latest version comes with a removable zippered clutch. This bag is textile-lined and has one roomy interior pocket. All hardware is gold in color. Another feature is two cinch straps, one on each side of the bag that can be tightened or loosened depending on your style.
  • Alma: The Alma is done in a structured style. It has a double zipper with a padlock closure. The top of this bag opens widely and is rounded. There are two leather handles and studs on the bottom of this bag for added protection. Other features of the Alma are a leather key bell, textile lining, and two interior pockets. All hardware is gold in color.

Shop Reputable Louis Vuitton Retailers

Where your shop for your bag can also reveal whether or not it's a fake. To be 100% sure, your best bet is to buy directly from  Louis Vuitton stores and boutiques , in-person or online.

Helpful Hack If you're not sure about a bag, you can bring it to an LV store and ask a sales associate to take a look. All Louis Vuitton associates are trained and will be able to spot a fake. Or, you can use a handbag authentication service to determine the authenticity of your bag; just research carefully to make sure you're using a legitimate service.

Do Your Research

Like the old saying goes, if it is too good to be true, then it probably is. This goes for Louis Vuitton bags, too. An authentic Louis Vuitton will always be crafted from high-end luxury materials and the price tag reflects that fact. With these tips in your back pocket, you shouldn't have much trouble spotting fake Louis Vuitton bags and can keep your hard-earned money safe from scams.

Where To Buy Louis Vuitton The Cheapest in 2024? (Cheapest Country, Discount, Price, VAT Rate & Tax Refund)

Louis vuitton is widely recognized fo..., how to spot real lv keepall bag, 1.the overall look: shape, proportions & posture.

How the bag looks is an incredibly important first step when authenticating an LV product , because you should immediately know that slouching (when the item is resting), creasing, strange proportions and an otherwise imperfect appearance is a huge red flag.

While the original LV Keepall bag is pretty wide with a big room inside the replica is narrower than it should be.

Not only the measurements but the shape of the model itself is different in both cases: the outline is nice and round in the right picture whereas it gives more of a pentagon shape to the fake bag.

image.png

2.Louis Vuitton Keepall Materials & Colors

The Louis Vuitton Keepall was initially introduced in the classic monogram coated canvas and continues to be available in this iconic textile for Louis Vuitton. Beyond the classics, the Louis Vuitton Keepall can be shopped in all the luxurious LV leathers such as Epi leather, Taiga, Taurillon, and other “out of the box” materials such as PVC, transparent mesh, denim, and even wool part of LV’s felt line crafted using organic cotton, recycled wool-based jacquard, and recycled polyester.

The authentic LV Keepall bag uses better and more natural leather than fake LV manufacturers.

The fake LV Keepall bag looks like it has its leather less natural as it seems like another whole material.

3.The Stitching of Louis Vuitton Keepall Bag

3.1. stitching on the leather hanger.

Both of the leather hangers have the stitches on the edges wavy, but there is still a difference between these two.

First, the authentic Louis Vuitton Keepall bag, the stitches look denser and less thick than the fake ones.

Besides, the authentic LV Keepall bag has the stitching on the leather hanger more wavy than the stitching on the fake bag.

image.png

3.2. Stitching on the side LV Keepall

Most of the time, the authentic Louis Vuitton Keepall has the stitching looking thinner than the stitching on the fake ones, especially in the corners, and in the same time, this makes the authentic bag look more subtle.

The last detail of the method is the ending of the zipper- there is a huge space between the sides on the authentic zipper when they are supposed to be closer.

image.png

4.The Print on Louis Vuitton Keepall Bag

Next, we are going to analyze the classic Monogram print, and the the print on Damier Louis Vuitton Keepall bag.

4.1. The Monogram bag

Below we have pointed out three main flaws in the fake Louis Vuitton Monogram Keepall.

The fake LV Keepall has the “LV” print crooked and not positioned straight as with the other elements on the print. Meanwhile, the legit bag is exactly the opposite.

The flower inside the filled circle (highlighted on the left side of the images) is too big on the fake LV duffle bag. This is visible if you look at the edges o the circle.

The flowers without the circle are, again, too big and too thick on the fake LV Monogram bags.

image.png

4.2. The Damier bag

The fake LV Damier print has the checkerboard squares looking wider than they have to look.

Then, the fake LV Damier Keepall print has the boxes in which it is printed the “Louis Vuitton” text is less visible and defined than the text on the legit Keepall.

1707188559822782.png

5.The Handle of Louis Vuitton Keepall Bag

Look at how small the folded leather piece of the authentic handle is whereas it appears much larger on the fake bag.

The brown outline is thicker and neat on real LV Keepall bag while it is a little messy on the replica handle.

6.The Strap Inscriptions:“Louis Vuitton PARIS made in France”Text

Lettering and details done with a hot stamp is a Louis Vuitton style.

First, on the top of the leather hanger, in the “®” character, the circle is too big and too thick on the fake LV Keepall bag, and on the other hand, the legit “®” character and its circle are thinner.

Then, on the second text line, the “LOUIS VUITTON” printed text, the letters “L” and “N” are too thick on the fake leather hanger, and on the legit bag, it is exactly the opposite.

Lastly here, in the “made in France” text, the letter “m” is thicker and bigger than it has to be on the fake Louis Vuitton Keepall bag.

7.The Hardware of Louis Vuitton Keepall Bag

7.1. the zipper of lv keepall .

Replica factories always manage to use the lowest quality zippers- look how close teeth are to one another on the authentic zipper whereas they are crooked and further apart from each other on the replica.

The puller itself is differently shaped on fake LV Keepall : it is wider and bigger than it should be with more square-like features.

1707191120759778.png

7.2. Metal on LV Keepall

As you can see, the authentic metal is reflective and smooth whereas the replica is grainy and matte. The engraving is done poorly in the right picture too- letters need to be deeper down the metal.

The shape of the metal handle attachment itself is different in both cases too- it is rounder and smoother on the authentic bag.

image.png

7.3. Buttons on LV Keepall

Take a look at how deep the button is fit into the leather part. Basically, the fake Louis Vuitton button is fit less deep into the leather tab, and the authentic button is fit deeper inside.

1707190857507127.png

8.The Size Inscription on LV Keepall Bag(e.g. 45, 55, 60, etc)

The main problem with the counterfeit Louis Vuitton Keepall bags’ size number is that this number is not centered in the middle of the leather part.

On the other hand, the authentic Louis Vuitton Keepall bags have the size number centered in the middle of the leather part.

1707191770717017.png

9.The Label of LV Keepall Bag

Then we are going to have a look at the little tab found on the exterior side of your Louis Vuitton Keepall.

Even though the authentic leather is matte, it has a glossy effect which is not the case on the fake label.

The stitching from the top of the badge looks much deeper and fit into the badge itself on the fake bag, and on the legit bag, it is less squeezed deep into the badge.

Besides, the stitching on the fake Louis Vuitton bag comes too close to the “®” character, and on the legit LV bag, this stitching is placed further from the “®“.

Then, the “LOUIS VUITTON” and the “PARIS” words are too wide and stretched out on the fake LV Keepall. The legit bag has these three words less wide and smaller.

image.png

10.The Date codes/ Serial Number of Louis Vuitton Keepall Bag

From the 1980s till the early 2021 Louis Vuitton used a proprietary date code system to detail where and when its handbags were made.Below we’ll analyze the serial number printed on the little leather tab of LV Keepall bag:

The legit LV Keepall bag serial number seems to use a different font for the number “1” character compared to the one used on the replica bag. This is because of the stick of the “1” that’s too long.

Also, the visibility of the fake Louis Vuitton Keepall serial number is worse, and the authentic serail number is more opaque.

The button itself is bigger and rounder on the authentic bag and the fake bag should be replicating the same thing.

1707199719126011.png

The date code is stamped on leather attached into the right-hand corner of the inner pocket.  Most date codes are a combination of letters and numbers. The letters indicated the country in which the item was made while the numbers indicate the month/year of the production date.

The following are examples and explanations of date codes and how they have evolved:

Tips: Until early 2021 Louis Vuitton used a combination of letters and numbers to determine the location and the week of the year when the bag was manufactured. However, if your bag is more recent, be mindful that from March 2021 Louis Vuitton stopped using date codes and instead began embedding NFC tags or chips within each new bag.

Scan the serial number of your Louis Vuitton Keepall on LV’s website

Go to this  online Louis Vuitton serial number calculator  and introduce yours to find out more about your bag.

When you scan an authentic Louis Vuitton item, especially the bag in our case, it shows you where and when your bag was manufactured.

The fake Louis Vuitton scan tells you nothing about it and they have no information for your item.

1707200853348201.png

Notice: When buying bags on the pre-loved market, make sure the details provided by the seller match the details of the date code. Checking the date code is one way to determine if a bag is fake, however this is not the only method.

11.What Does a Real Louis Vuitton Bag Smell Like?

Use your olfactory senses to sniff out potential fakers. If you get a whiff of plastic or chemicals, it may not be the real deal. Authentic Louis Vuitton bags will smell like genuine leather — or just clean, like nothing at all.

12.Where is Authentic Louis Vuitton Made?

LV leather goods collections are exclusively produced in our workshops located in France, Spain, Italy and the United States. Production of LV footwear and Ready-to-Wear collections takes place in France and Italy. Watches are exclusively made in timepiece workshops in Switzerland. Therefore, if you see an LV bag that says Made in the USA, it could certainly be authentic.

Why were so many metro stations in Moscow renamed?

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

Okhotny Ryad station in Soviet times and today.

The Moscow metro system has 275 stations, and 28 of them have been renamed at some point or other—and several times in some cases. Most of these are the oldest stations, which opened in 1935.

The politics of place names

The first station to change its name was Ulitsa Kominterna (Comintern Street). The Comintern was an international communist organization that ceased to exist in 1943, and after the war Moscow authorities decided to call the street named after it something else. In 1946, the station was renamed Kalininskaya. Then for several days in 1990, the station was called Vozdvizhenka, before eventually settling on Aleksandrovsky Sad, which is what it is called today.

The banner on the entraince reads:

The banner on the entraince reads: "Kalininskaya station." Now it's Alexandrovsky Sad.

Until 1957, Kropotkinskaya station was called Dvorets Sovetov ( Palace of Soviets ). There were plans to build a monumental Stalinist high-rise on the site of the nearby Cathedral of Christ the Saviour , which had been demolished. However, the project never got off the ground, and after Stalin's death the station was named after Kropotkinskaya Street, which passes above it.

Of course, politics was the main reason for changing station names. Initially, the Moscow Metro itself was named after Lazar Kaganovich, Joseph Stalin’s right-hand man. Kaganovich supervised the construction of the first metro line and was in charge of drawing up a master plan for reconstructing Moscow as the "capital of the proletariat."

In 1955, under Nikita Khrushchev's rule and during the denunciation of Stalin's personality cult, the Moscow Metro was named in honor of Vladimir Lenin.

New Metro stations that have been opened since the collapse of the Soviet Union simply say "Moscow Metro," although the metro's affiliation with Vladimir Lenin has never officially been dropped.

Zyablikovo station. On the entrance, there are no more signs that the metro is named after Lenin.

Stations that bore the names of Stalin's associates were also renamed under Khrushchev. Additionally, some stations were named after a neighborhood or street and if these underwent name changes, the stations themselves had to be renamed as well.

Until 1961 the Moscow Metro had a Stalinskaya station that was adorned by a five-meter statue of the supreme leader. It is now called Semyonovskaya station.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

Left: Stalinskaya station. Right: Now it's Semyonovskaya.

The biggest wholesale renaming of stations took place in 1990, when Moscow’s government decided to get rid of Soviet names. Overnight, 11 metro stations named after revolutionaries were given new names. Shcherbakovskaya became Alekseyevskaya, Gorkovskaya became Tverskaya, Ploshchad Nogina became Kitay-Gorod and Kirovskaya turned into Chistye Prudy. This seriously confused passengers, to put it mildly, and some older Muscovites still call Lubyanka station Dzerzhinskaya for old times' sake.

At the same time, certain stations have held onto their Soviet names. Marksistskaya and Kropotkinskaya, for instance, although there were plans to rename them too at one point.

"I still sometimes mix up Teatralnaya and Tverskaya stations,” one Moscow resident recalls .

“Both have been renamed and both start with a ‘T.’ Vykhino still grates on the ear and, when in 1991 on the last day of my final year at school, we went to Kitay-Gorod to go on the river cruise boats, my classmates couldn’t believe that a station with that name existed."

The city government submitted a station name change for public discussion for the first time in 2015. The station in question was Voykovskaya, whose name derives from the revolutionary figure Pyotr Voykov. In the end, city residents voted against the name change, evidently not out of any affection for Voykov personally, but mainly because that was the name they were used to.

What stations changed their name most frequently?

Some stations have changed names three times. Apart from the above-mentioned Aleksandrovsky Sad (Ulitsa Kominterna->Kalininskaya->Vozdvizhenka->Aleksandrovsky Sad), a similar fate befell Partizanskaya station in the east of Moscow. Opened in 1944, it initially bore the ridiculously long name Izmaylovsky PKiO im. Stalina (Izmaylovsky Park of Culture and Rest Named After Stalin). In 1947, the station was renamed and simplified for convenience to Izmaylovskaya. Then in 1963 it was renamed yet again—this time to Izmaylovsky Park, having "donated" its previous name to the next station on the line. And in 2005 it was rechristened Partizanskaya to mark the 60th anniversary of victory in World War II.

Partizanskaya metro station, nowadays.

Another interesting story involves Alekseyevskaya metro station. This name was originally proposed for the station, which opened in 1958, since a village with this name had been located here. It was then decided to call the station Shcherbakovskaya in honor of Aleksandr Shcherbakov, a politician who had been an associate of Stalin. Nikita Khrushchev had strained relations with Shcherbakov, however, and when he got word of it literally a few days before the station opening the builders had to hastily change all the signs. It ended up with the concise and politically correct name of Mir (Peace).

The name Shcherbakovskaya was restored in 1966 after Khrushchev's fall from power. It then became Alekseyevskaya in 1990.

But the station that holds the record for the most name changes is Okhotny Ryad, which opened in 1935 on the site of a cluster of market shops. When the metro system was renamed in honor of Lenin in 1955, this station was renamed after Kaganovich by way of compensation. The name lasted just two years though because in 1957 Kaganovich fell out of favor with Khrushchev, and the previous name was returned. But in 1961 it was rechristened yet again, this time in honor of Prospekt Marksa, which had just been built nearby.

In 1990, two historical street names—Teatralny Proyezd and Mokhovaya Street—were revived to replace Prospekt Marksa, and the station once again became Okhotny Ryad.
