CEO of The Travel Corporation: Why Sustainable Travel is ‘Critical Today’ and for the Industry’s Future

Chelsea Todaro

As the world stopped and international travel placed on hold, 2020 created time for reflection on how travel will move forward.

For Brett Tollman, Chief Executive Officer of The Travel Corporation (TTC), the pandemic affirms how critical it is for the travel industry to prioritize sustainability and make travel matter. The company recently announced a new five-year sustainability strategy, “How We Tread Right” to take increased action on travel’s environmental impact.

“COVID-19 is in part a consequence of our cumulative treatment of our world and its resources, making our focus of how we tread right in the future, critical today,” Tollman said. “Never before has our industry been faced with so many challenges, many of which are directly tied to the heavy environmental footprint on the planet. At TTC, we believe that sustainability is critical to the return of our business post-COVID-19.”

The center of this new strategy focuses on 11 goals developed to address both the environmental footprint and the community impact of TTC’s business and operations, such as sourcing 50% of electricity from renewable sources, reducing food waste by 50% across all hotels and ships, reducing printed brochures by 50%, by 2025 and achieving carbon neutrality by 2030 or sooner. These goals also adhere to the United Nations Global Goals for Sustainable Development.

“Our strategy is the progressive commitment to sustainability and the planet that TTC and our travel brands must make right now to achieve our 11 goals and be accountable for our impact,” says Tollman.

This year is a bittersweet moment for Tollman, as he celebrates 100 years in business with his family and 12 years since his founding of TreadRight Foundation, a not-for-profit organization that pledges to protect people, planet and wildlife across the globe.

Tollman’s grandfather founded TTC in 1920 in a small fishing village in South Africa. Today, a century later, the company has grown to 40 award-winning travel brands that span across 70 countries — like Trafalgar, Contiki, Insight Vacations and Uniworld Boutique River Cruises. The world has changed drastically since the company’s founding and TTC has adapted to crises through the decades, which now includes a global pandemic.

“Speaking for my family and each brand at TTC, we are looking to this next phase with travelers’ health and wellbeing at the very center of what we do,” Tollman said. “Just as we all faced a steep learning curve with the travel shutdown back in March, so we now have a great deal to understand about how, where and when we will travel again in the weeks, months and years ahead.”

The challenges brought to the travel industry this year only highlight how TTC will define travel for the next 100 years, by bringing people together through travel, making travel personal and paving the way for a more conscious traveler, Tollman said. These philosophies are woven into the TreadRight Foundation , which has supported more than 55 sustainable tourism projects worldwide to date.

“Just as travel will become more personal, it will also matter more in numerous ways within the three realms in which we work with our own TreadRight Foundation – Planet, People, and Wildlife,” Tollman said. “For example, the lack of travel this year has had a very negative impact on endangered wildlife populations in Africa, where those without work have resorted to poaching so as to feed their families and just survive.”

TTC’s sustainable strategy features the creation of brand-new “Make Travel Matter” experiences across their brands, that offers travelers a chance to give back and play a part in advancing the United Nations’ Sustainable Development Goals worldwide. These immersive experiences will be featured on 50 percent of itineraries across TTC’s brands by 2025.

One of the experiences can be found on Contiki’s Berlin to Budapest by Train itinerary, where a team of activists turned guides take Contiki guests on a walking tour around Berlin to explain the story behind the headlines of the refugee crisis and the root causes of why so many are forced to flee. The UN endorsed this experience for advancing the global goal of “Reduced Inequalities.”

“Woven together through rich cultures, histories, wildlife and a natural beauty; our planet, our home, is something to embrace and discover,” Tollman said. “We create transformative experiences that offer life changing moments and help fulfill that deep-seated urge for connection and learning.”

As for what travel will look like in the next 100 years, Tollman hopes the positive impacts of today’s travelers will leave lasting footprints for the future generation of travelers.

“Like you, we are travelers. It’s in our blood, who we are and what we do every day. We are passionate, curious and deeply committed to the idea of sustainably exploring this incredible world as part of a global community,” Tollman said.  “We look forward to serving travelers, as we have for over 100 years, helping them find the right pace to rediscover travel – and see the world anew.”

How to find the right international travel insurance company

Different travelers and trips require different types of insurance coverage. So, consider these tips if you're in the market to insure your trip.

Determine your needs

  • Consider the nature of your travel (leisure, business, or adventure) and the associated risks (medical emergencies, trip cancellations, etc.).
  • Determine your budget and the amount of coverage you require.
  • Consider the duration of your trip and the countries you'll be visiting, as some policies won't cover specific destinations.

Research the reputation of the company

  • Look for the company's reviews and ratings from reputable sources like consumer advocacy groups and independent website reviews.
  • Check the provider's financial stability and credit ratings to ensure it can pay out claims reliably.
  • Investigate the company's claims process to ensure it can provide timely support if you need to file a claim.

Compare prices

  • Get quotes from multiple providers to compare rates and coverage options.
  • See if the company provides discounts or special offers to lower your cost.
  • Look at the deductible or any out-of-pocket expenses you may have to pay if you file a claim to determine if you can afford it.

Understanding international travel insurance coverage options

Travel insurance can be confusing, but we're here to simplify it for you. We'll break down the industry's jargon to help you understand what travel insurance covers to help you decide what your policy needs. Bear in mind that exclusions and limitations for your age and destination may apply.

Finding the best price for international travel insurance

Your policy cost will depend on several factors, such as the length of your trip, destination, coverage limits, and age. Typically, a comprehensive policy includes travel cancellation coverage costs between 5% and 10% of your total trip cost.

If you're planning an international trip that costs $4,500, you can expect to pay anywhere from $225 to $450 for your policy. Comparing quotes from multiple providers can help you find a budget-friendly travel insurance policy that meets your needs.

How we reviewed international travel insurance companies

We ranked and assigned superlatives to the best travel insurance companies based on our insurance rating methodology . It focuses on several key factors, including:

  • Policy types: We analyzed company offerings such as coverage levels, exclusions, and policy upgrades, taking note of providers that offer a range of travel-related issues beyond the standard coverages.
  • Affordability: We recognize that cheap premiums don't necessarily equate to sufficient coverage. So, we seek providers that offer competitive rates with comprehensive policies and quality customer service. We also call out any discounts or special offers available.
  • Flexibility: Travel insurance isn't one-size-fits-all. We highlight providers that offer a wide array of coverage options, including single-trip, multi-trip, and long-term policies.
  • Claims handling: The claims process should be pain-free for policyholders. We seek providers that offer a streamlined process via online claims filing and a track record of handling claims fairly and efficiently.
  • Quality customer service: Good customer service is as important as affordability and flexibility. We highlight companies that offer 24/7 assistance and have a strong record of customer service responsiveness.

We consult user feedback and reviews to determine how each company fares in each category. We also check the provider's financial rating and volume of complaints via third-party rating agencies.

Which company has the best international travel insurance?

The best insurance policy depends on your individual situation, including your destination and budget. However, popular options include Allianz Travel Insurance, World Nomads, and Travel Guard.

Is international health insurance the same as travel insurance?

International health insurance and travel insurance serve different purposes. While both may cover medical expenses, international health insurance provides long-term health insurance for working abroad. Meanwhile, travel insurance offers short-term coverage for the duration of your trip.

What insurance do you need for international travel?

Typically, your regular health insurance won't cover you out of the country, so you'll want to make sure your travel insurance has adequate medical emergency coverage. Depending on your travel plans, you may want to purchase add-ons, such as adventure sports coverage, if you're planning on doing anything adventurous like bungee jumping.

Should you get travel insurance for international travel?

Travel insurance is worth the price for international travel because they're generally more expensive, so you have more to lose. Additionally, your regular health insurance won't cover you in other countries, so without travel insurance, you'll end up paying out of pocket for any emergency medical care you receive out of the US.

Russian Far East: top 10 experiences

The Russian Far East has a mystique that’s been luring travellers for generations. With the volcanoes and geysers of Kamchatka, ancient stone pillars on the Lena River and some of the world’s coldest and remotest human settlements, as well as the cosmopolitan cities of Vladivostok and Khabarovsk, the region has something for everyone. Russia’s poignant past is present here too, from the BAM (Baikal-Amur Mainline) railway to the infamous Kolyma Highway that runs to Magadan, the most notorious outpost of the Far Eastern Gulag system.

Vladivostok

The ‘Master of the East’, a hip, dynamic city with an impressive setting in the Golden Horn Bay, Vladivostok is the unofficial capital of the Russian Far East and a cultural heavyweight in its own right. St Petersburg’s renowned Mariinsky Theatre has inaugurated the Primorsky Stage in the city in recent years, joining the new Hermitage Vladivostok branch and the stellar Zarya Centre for Contemporary Art as the city’s premier cultural attractions. Meanwhile, the S-56 Submarine , Fort No 7 and the Vladivostok Fortress Museum pay homage to the city’s background as Russia’s most important eastern naval base. Vladivostok’s dining scene is second only to Moscow and St Petersburg, and numerous cocktail bars and pubs attract night owls. If the frenetic pace is a little overwhelming, you can always escape to the beaches on Russky Island and Popov Island .

Right in the heart of the legendary Kamchatka peninsula, the little town of Esso is the jumping-off spot for some terrific hiking, soaking in the istochniki (hot springs) and rafting on the nearby Bystraya River. Charming  izbas (wooden cottages) sit in a pine-scented valley, surrounded by forested mountains. A well-marked network of hiking trails threads its way through the surrounding Bystrinsky Nature Park, ranging in difficulty and in length – the shortest is 2km, the longest 42km.

One of Kamchatka’s highlights, the steaming Valley of Geysers can be accessed only by helicopter © Alla / Shutterstock

Valley of Geysers, Kamchatka

Accessible only by a helicopter tour from Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky, the smoking Dolina Geyzerov is the star attraction of  Kamchatka – the volcano- and geyser-studded peninsula that has the most dramatic, volatile topography in all of Russia. This 8km-long valley, bisected by the Geysernaya River, is dotted with several dozen geysers that sporadically blast steam, mud and water towards the sky. Some of the more colourful ones can be admired while strolling along a specially made boardwalk.

The remote capital of the Sakha Republic, Yakutsk is both the world’s coldest city and a marvel of Soviet engineering, built entirely on permafrost. Its tangle of overground pipes, carrying water and gas, is a peculiar sight, but Yakutsk is a surprisingly cosmopolitan place despite its isolation. A visit to the quirky  Permafrost Kingdom is particularly worthwhile, with its never-melting sculptures of pagan gods and mythological characters, while the National Art Museum introduces you to the mammoth tusk carvings and paintings by Sakha artists. The best places to try Sakha delicacies such as indigirka (raw, frozen fish), reindeer and zherebyatiny (colt fillet) are Chochur Muran and Makhtal restaurants.

Riding the BAM railway

Stretching for some 4324km from Severobaikalsk (on the northern shores of Lake Baikal) to the Sea of Okhotsk, the BAM (Baikal-Amur Mainline) is a triumph of railway engineering (and convict labour) and the less-taken alternative to the Trans-Siberian Railway. With its bridges spanning the mighty Lena and Amur rivers, its tunnels blasted through kilometres of sheer rock, and its tracks running through dense spruce forest and taiga, riding the BAM is a wonderful way to get to know ordinary Russians. You might find yourself sharing a beer or hot tea and heaped spoons of caviar with miners or lumberjacks, who’ll be intensely curious about you. It’s worth disembarking in Tynda, where travel writer Dervla Murphy got stuck while writing Through Siberia by Accident, to visit the BAM Museum, and in Komsomolsk-na-Amure, to check out the grand Soviet-era mosaics and the riverside beach.

Some 650km east of Yakutsk, the tiny reindeer and silver fox breeding station of Oymyakon (population around 500) is the coldest permanently inhabited place on Earth, with temperatures in the nearby valleys dropping as low as -82°C. Various travel agencies in Yakutsk, including Visit Yakutia , organise week-long tours to Oymyakon to attend the annual Pole of Cold Festival in late March, featuring reindeer races, outdoor concerts and other festivities.

The golden domes of the Transfiguration Cathedral in Khabarovsk are dazzling in the winter sunset © Konstantin Baidin / Shutterstock

Whether you come here in winter for the ice sculptures, or in summer for the lively nightlife and the Amur River beach, Khabarovsk is a breath of fresh air, especially if you’ve spent days cooped up on the train before getting here. Its wide boulevards are lined with stately, tsarist-era buildings (spot the Far Eastern State Research Library and the Tsentralny Gastronom), and there are numerous green walkways for strolling around the city, including those on Amursky bul and Ussuriysky bul. The burgeoning dining scene’s highlights are Georgian cuisine at Satsivi  and fusion at Farsh ; some good bars are dotted around the city centre, including the hipster Brozbar , with a good range of craft beer.

Magadan and Kolyma Highway

Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and hemmed in by the Sea of Okhotsk, Magadan is a surprisingly pleasant city, given its dark past. Described as the ‘pole of cold and cruelty’ in Solzhenitsyn’s Gulag Archipelago, it was the most notorious of the Stalinist forced labour camps from the 1930s to mid-1950s. The harsh sub-Arctic climate and dreadful work conditions are believed to have killed over a million prisoners in the Kolyma region, commemorated by the giant Mask of Sorrow monument on a hillside above Magadan, as well as at the Magadan Regional Museum . You can get here by air, or via the Russian Far East’s most ambitious road trip – a three- or four-day journey from Yakutsk by 6WD vehicle or truck along the Kolyma Highway, aka the ‘road of bones’, built on the backs of countless Gulag labourers.

The limestone Lena Pillars in the Sakha Republic are a popular cruise trip from Yakutsk © Vicky Ivanova / Shutterstock

Lena Pillars

The Russian Far East’s most popular cruise is the two-day jaunt from Yakutsk to the Lenskie Stolby (Lena Pillars) along the mighty Lena River. Resembling a petrified forest, the 80km-long, 35-million-year-old limestone pillars reach for the sky along the riverbank – a startling sight after you’ve spent many hours floating through impenetrable spruce forest. Lena Tur Flot  runs 36- and 46-hour cruises here aboard its two comfy cruise ships; you’ll even get to see a shaman ceremony.

Blagoveshchensk

A remote Russian outpost since 1644, this frontier town faces its rather more modern Chinese neighbour, Heihe, across the Amur River. However, it’s worth making the detour 110km south of the main Trans-Siberian Railway line to Blagoveshchensk to check out the charming tsarist-era architecture that dots the town centre; another highlight is the extensive  Amur Regional Museum . Blagoveshchensk is also one of the easiest places in Russia from which to enter China (though you’ll need to organise your visa in advance).

Shareholders’ Agreement Signed for Participation in Construction and Operation of New Terminal at Khabarovsk International Airport

PDF[193.3 KB]

Dec. 18, 2018 Sojitz Corporation Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development

On December 18 th , 2018, a consortium comprising three Japanese companies—Sojitz Corporation (“Sojitz”), Japan Airport Terminal Co., Ltd. (“Japan Airport Terminal”) and Japan Overseas Infrastructure Investment Corporation for Transport & Urban Development (“JOIN”)—signed a shareholders’ agreement with Joint-Stock Company Khabarovsk Airport (“KHV”) for participation in a business to construct and operate a passenger terminal at Khabarovsk International Airport. The total cost of the project is estimated at around JPY 10 billion. The agreement calls for the consortium to start by acquiring a 10% stake in a Japan-Russia joint venture called “International Airport Khabarovsk”, with the consortium having the option to increase their investment moving forward. Khabarovsk is a key political and economic location in the Russian Far East, and this project encompasses the construction and management of a new passenger terminal at Khabarovsk International Airport, developed jointly between KHV and the consortium comprised of Sojitz, Japan Airport Terminal, and JOIN. The new domestic terminal is scheduled to open in the second half of 2019 and will be capable of serving three million passengers annually. The parties plan to examine the possibility of collaborating on a second phase of the project (2020-2023) as well, covering construction and operation of a new international terminal. With JOIN’s support for exporting of high-quality, Japanese infrastructure systems overseas, Japan Airport Terminal’s first-class airport passenger services developed through many years of operational experience at Haneda Airport’s passenger terminal, and Sojitz’s expertise in aviation business and the Russian market, the consortium hopes to raise the quality of operations at Khabarovsk International Airport, further facilitate movement of people and goods between Japan and Russia, and thereby help develop the Russian Far East.

Milo the Melbourne Airport escapee reunites with owners in UK after weeks on the run

A dog at the centre of a major search effort after escaping animal transport handlers at Melbourne Airport has finally been reunited with his owners in Wales.

Milo the Jack Russell cross is settling into his new home in the United Kingdom after sparking a 17-day search and rescue effort in the industrial estate in Tullamarine .

"He was so excited to meet Nick and I today," said a relieved owner, Jason Whatnall.

"The hype and everything that's led up to this, I think it's all been a big adventure for him."

A light brown coloured dog is cuddled by two men who are smiling at him and patting him.

The international fugitive made headlines after Mr Whatnall took to social media appealing for the community to help find his lost furry friend.

He had only been at the airport for half an hour when he managed to escape his handler and race off.

A specialist animal rescuer came on board, driving around the industrial estate playing a recording of Mr Whatnall's voice through a speaker while businesses left food out to help keep him nourished and to try to lure him out of hiding.

Eventually, Milo was spotted sleeping underneath a shipping container and, with the aid of a special trap stocked with doggy treats, his life on the run came to a halt.

"Getting that call was a huge sigh of relief," Mr Whatnall said.

"Obviously being in the UK, I felt quite helpless and couldn't be there to search for Milo myself but thankfully the volunteers and community members stepped up to the plate."

Milo — who had lost 1.5 kilograms since going missing — was this week successfully loaded onto a plane to London and transported onto his new home in Wales where Mr Whatnall and his partner Nick were waiting.

A light coloured dog cowers behind the steel cage door of a dog carrier.

"[Milo] was just crying and squeaking with delight, he couldn't wait to get out of the cage," Mr Whatnall said.

"He ran straight to Nick, we had cuddles and there's tears flowing and he jumped right up into my arms.

"We did it inside a house so it was safe, so we could really release him without him taking off for part two in London."

Mr Whatnall said the trio spent their first day back together playing and "hanging out".

"I think it's all catching up with him now," he said.

"He's a bit jet-lagged and needs a good sleep."

Mr Whatnall said he planned on spoiling Milo with treats, including chicken and his favourite food, as the family forged a new life abroad.

Crafty canine ' would just bolt'

Animal rescuer Nigel Williamson and his colleague spent more than 84 hours combing the industrial estate.

He said Milo was an elusive target.

"While he was at large, he wouldn't go near anybody at all, we couldn't get within 300 metres of him — he saw a person and he would just bolt," Mr Williamson said.

"Once we had him out of the trap, he became very, very friendly and he returned back to his normal self."

Mr Williamson said he believed Milo used his Jack Russell instincts to hunt out rats and rabbits, and sifted through rubbish bins to find food.

He said a colleague who spent 39 hours staking out the shipping container yard made a video call to Mr Whatnall as soon as they retrieved Milo.

"Whether or not he recognised him or not, I'm not sure,": he said.

"[But] Milo was able to hear Jason's voice straight away and see him on the phone."
