Which Ford Models Have Adaptive Cruise Control?

Modern Fords are packed with technology, and one of the more important features for most drivers is adaptive cruise control. Cruise control systems have been around for decades, but we can remember when you’d have to constantly brake and restart the cruise control when you hit traffic or a slow driver in front.

Fortunately, with adaptive cruise control systems, those days are over. Like most manufacturers, Ford added adaptive cruise control to their model range a few years ago , and the system has been developed and improved ever since.

So if this feature is so great, you‘ll want to know which Ford models have adaptive cruise control right? Well, to answer that question, we’ve put together a list of every current Ford model, to show you which cars include this option and which don’t. We’ll also talk you through how it works , and if we think it’s value for money.

Let’s get started!

Table of Contents

How does Ford’s adaptive cruise control work?

Ford’s adaptive cruise control works similarly to most systems. The system is managed by a series of radars and cameras around the vehicle to monitor speed and distance from any objects. Once you set your desired speed and preferred distance from the car in front, the system will manage the rest.

This allows your Ford to slow down when the vehicle in front is slowing (so distance is maintained), and once the vehicle in front accelerates, your Ford will increase speed until it reaches the speed you set when you turned the cruise control on.

On some Ford models, the system includes a speed sign recognition system, which allows your car to monitor speed signs and slow down if necessary.

Do all Ford models come with adaptive cruise control?

No – most of the vehicles in the current Ford range include adaptive cruise control, but i t isn’t available on every model . Below we’ve listed every current Ford vehicle to show you:

Models with adaptive cruise control as an optional extra

Most of the Ford range includes adaptive cruise control as an optional extra . The cost of adding this varies across the Ford range, and in most cases the adaptive cruise control feature is included with a larger options pack.

As a result, some option packs can reach into the thousands , and you may end up paying for features you don’t need. Unfortunately, most manufacturers are selling options this way, so it’s no surprise to see Ford adopting the option pack model.

Models without adaptive cruise control

There are a small number of vehicles in the current Ford range without the option for adaptive cruise control. These are usually the entry level trims for most Ford vehicles, which are missing a lot of standard features.

There are still some high spec vehicles on here. The Mach 1 Mustang models and the F-150 Lightning Pro are expensive cars, and it’s disappointing to see that Ford don’t include adaptive cruise control here.

Is adaptive cruise control worth it?

If you’re expecting to do a lot of highway driving in your Ford , then the adaptive cruise control feature would be a no brainer for me. It makes longer journeys considerably easier and the adaptive tech makes freeway driving in traffic less stressful.

If you’re going to do most of your driving in built up areas (where you’ll be at lower speeds) or off-road, then the adaptive cruise control system won’t get much use. It’s still useful for any longer journeys, but I wouldn’t rush to add this feature.

Now we can talk about the cost . If you’re looking at a Ford model where adaptive cruise control is standard then great, you have that feature built in at no cost. If you’re looking at a mid-spec Ford, chances are you’ll have to pay for adaptive cruise control and buy an options pack.

Some packs are great value , like the Safe & Smart pack, but some are incredibly expensive for what you get. Our advice is to check all the features, and you might find upgrading to the higher-spec model is actually cheaper than adding a package.

What other Ford options should you look at?

Across the Ford range there are plenty of impressive (and not so impressive) options. We’ve put together articles on the most important features you should look into, covering the price, availability, and our thoughts. Check out the links below for more info:

Guide to using ford adaptive cruise control, how to use ford adaptive cruise control.

Available on nearly all current Ford vehicles, Adaptive Cruise Control makes everyday driving easier by eliminating the need to constantly readjust cruise control speed. The intuitive system automatically adjusts speed to maintain a set distance from slower-moving vehicles ahead. Once traffic speeds up, the system operates like normal cruise control, returning to your designated speed. Learn how to use the Ford Adaptive Cruise Control system when we cover setting cruise speed, adjusting gap distance and more in this feature guide!

Ford Cars w/ Adaptive Cruise Control (19 Models: Full List)

Adaptive cruise control has been available mostly in luxury vehicles but is now common in many mainstream cars, including Ford.

The Ford cars, SUVs, and EVs in this post have adaptive cruise control or conventional cruise control system.

Check the corresponding tables to see the relevant model years when the system became available.

ford

Adaptive Cruise Control vs. Cruise Control

The more-basic cruise control in older Ford vehicles helps maintain a steady cruising speed for a relaxing highway drive.

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) enhances the conventional cruise control system by adjusting the car’s speed to match the vehicle ahead, slowing or accelerating accordingly in response to the driver’s set speed.

Newer Fords have the Co-Pilot360 technology, containing a suite of tech and safety features that keep the driver in command, including Ford Blue Cruise and Intelligent Adaptive Cruise Control.

Rival mainstream car makers that produce popular SUV models with adaptive cruise control (ACC) include:

  • Toyota vehicles with ACC .
  • Kia vehicles with ACC .
  • Honda vehicles with ACC .
  • Hyundai vehicles with ACC .
  • Nissan vehicles with ACC .
  • Volkswagen vehicles with ACC .

Considering Ford’s strength in trucks and off-road four-wheel drives, the following manufacturers’ off-road capable vehicles with cruise control are worth checking out:

  • Ram vehicles with cruise control .
  • Jeep vehicles with cruise control .
  • GMC vehicles with cruise control .
  • Chevrolet vehicles with cruise control .

Ford Cars with Adaptive Cruise Control

#1 ford fiesta.

Most Ford Fiesta models from 2011 to 2019 had cruise control, including the SE, ST Line, and Titanium trims.

#2 Ford Focus

Most Ford Focus models in the higher trims from 2002 to 2018 had cruise control, including ST Line and Titanium.

Ford Focus in 2000 and 2001 with the Zetec engine did not have cruise control.

#3 Ford Mustang

This iconic coupe or convertible has been thrilling car enthusiasts for decades with its muscular powertrains and track-capable handling.

Cruise control has been standard for all Ford Mustangs since 2005, including the Mustang GT, Mach 1, Shelby GT350, and Shelby GT500.

Only the base model of the 2002, 2003, and 2004 Ford Mustang did not have the cruise control system.

No Ford Mustangs have the improved-spec adaptive cruise control.

Ford SUVs with Adaptive Cruise Control

#4 ford ecosport.

EcoSport is Ford’s smallest crossover, and the subcompact offers brand loyalists an opportunity to own an affordable Ford AWD .

Ford EcoSport has had the cruise control system as a standard provision since its 2018 debut.

Unfortunately, no Ford EcoSport has the more sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

#5 Ford Escape, Escape Hybrid, & Escape Plug-In Hybrid

In an ultra-competitive segment, the Ford Escape small SUV is a competent entrant, with a smooth ride and roomy interior among its notable pluses.

Ford offers the Escape SUV three powertrain options to broaden its appeal: gasoline-only, hybrid, and plug-in hybrid.

Since 2020, all Ford Escape models have had adaptive cruise control in the upper trims and conventional cruise control in the lower trims, including the Escape hybrid and Escape plug-in hybrid.

From 2009 to 2019, all Ford Escapes had standard cruise control, while older models only had the system in the higher trims.

2001 to 2008 Ford Escape models only had cruise control in the pricier trims.

#6 Ford Bronco Sport

The compact Bronco Sport represents the acceptable compromise if you want a more comfortable ride on-road and don’t need the larger, ultra-off-road-capable Bronco.

Most Ford Bronco Sport models have at least the conventional cruise control system, except for the pricier trims having the more-sophisticated adaptive cruise control from 2023 onwards.

#7 Ford Bronco

The Ford Bronco is one of the most capable 4WD off-roaders among midsize SUVs.

The 2021-revived Ford Bronco has had standard cruise control up to the latest model, with previous generations having none of the cruise-management systems.

No Ford Bronco has the more advanced adaptive cruise control.

#8 Ford Edge

Ford Edge is the American automaker’s two-row midsize SUV that travels better on-road than it goes off-road.

Since its 2007 introduction, Ford Edge has had the cruise control system as a standard provision.

No Ford Edge models have the sophisticated adaptive cruise control, unfortunately.

#9 Ford Explorer & Explorer Hybrid

This three-row midsize SUV is available in gas-only and hybrid powertrains.

Ford Explorers have had adaptive cruise control in the more-expensive trims and conventional cruise control in the basic trims since 2016.

From 2002 to 2015, Ford Explorers had standard cruise control; older models do not have the system.

#10 Ford Expedition

Though it’s the American company’s largest SUV with impressive towing capability, and is expectedly a comfortable highway cruiser, surprisingly, adaptive cruise control isn’t available across the range.

Ford only began making adaptive cruise control available in 2018 at the Expedition large SUV’s higher trims, which has stayed that way.

Ford Trucks with Adaptive Cruise Control

#11 ford maverick.

Ford Maverick compact truck has cruise control in the XLT and Lariat trims but not in the XL for 2022.

Pricier trims of the 2023 Ford Maverick have the more-advanced adaptive cruise control.

#12 Ford Ranger

This midsize pickup is easier to park than full-size trucks and has enough towing and hauling capacities for the average user.

All Ford Rangers have had cruise control since 2021, while the 2020 model only has the system in the higher trims; the 2019 Ford Ranger did not have cruise control.

No Ford Ranger has the comparatively more-sophisticated adaptive cruise control.

#13 Ford F-150 & F-150 Hybrid

Since 2021, most Ford F-150 models (including XL, XLT, and Lariat) have had at least the conventional cruise control system, except for King Ranch, Platinum, and Limited Hybrid trims with the more-sophisticated adaptive cruise control (ACC).

Ford F-150s from 2001 to 2020 only had basic cruise control in the more expensive trims; none had adaptive cruise control.

#14 Ford F-150 Raptor

Since its 2017 introduction, the Ford F-150 Raptor, with superior off-road chops, has had standard cruise control.

Unfortunately, the Ford F-150 Raptor does not have adaptive cruise control.

#15 Ford F-250

This full-size heavy-duty truck is the F-150 alternative if you need greater strength for heavier chores.

Most Ford F-250s have had cruise control since 2019, except for the Limited diesel trim with the higher-spec adaptive cruise control.

Opt for one of the higher trim levels if you want cruise control in Ford F-250s from 2001 to 2018.

#16 Ford F-350

Since 2020, most Ford F-350s have had cruise control, except for the more-expensive Limited and Platinum trims having the adaptive cruise control system.

Cruise control is only available in the higher trims of F-350 models from 2001 to 2019, like XLT, Lariat, and King Ranch when available.

#17 Ford F-450

Similar to the F-350, the Ford F-450 Super Duty has cruise control as a base provision and adaptive cruise control in the upper trims like Platinum and Limited.

Ford Van with Cruise Control

#18 ford transit passenger van.

Since 2019, most Ford Transit models have had cruise control, except for the more-basic trims where the system is optional.

Ford Electric Vehicle with Adaptive Cruise Control

#19 mustang mach-e.

Enthusiasts who desire the muscular Mustang coupe but wish for a more versatile body will find plenty of appeal in the Mustang Mach-E electric SUV.

All Ford Mustang Mach-E models have had standard adaptive cruise control since the electric SUV’s 2021 debut, including the Mach-E GT.

Focus ACC (Adaptive Cruise Control)

GhiaFan

Very good real life video showing how good the ACC system functions in the Focus. (in German) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uI0_W1oKGJc

That is really great video GhiaFan. I love ACC too much but my focus is not installed. Do you install ACC by yourself? If yes, Would u let me know how to install it and how much it is. Many thanks!

Hi GhiaFan, please give me instruction to install ACC into my Focus Titanium 2013

Sorry , I have no idea how to install ACC.

I am currently looking into this. A Polish guy fitted it to his Mondeo. So far I have worked out that firstly you need to have the correct type of ABS unit fitted that can apply the brakes when required as normal cruise only uses engine braking. If your car has hill start assist, then you already have the correct ABS type. You then need the radar sensor that fits behind the front grill, ACC module that fits behind the glove box and correct steering wheel cruise control switch with the distance buttons. Some people say that the wiring is already in place in the engine bay and behind the glove box. I haven't checked my car yet for that. Even if it isn't there, wires could be run. Finally the car has to be coded for ACC with focccus. In addition to ACC, you can also switch on the forward warning alerts that some vehicles have. Just trying to work out the part numbers of the various components .... if anyone can help with that?

Yeah, sorry for highjacking the other thread. Thanks for posting that picture. I will take a look at my car. Would you be able to post a screen grab of the parts diagram. Many thanks.

Thanks for posting. A very good source of information. Shows it is possible. I have set up search notifications on ebay for the radar and control module. I don't plan to pay full price for the radar at least as it's scarily expensive from Ford.

Hi, did you make any progress on this? Am buying a 2011 focus mk3 and looking to retrofit ACC. Have you got a parts list? Thanks for any help!

What Is Adaptive Cruise Control?

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is a system designed to help road vehicles maintain a safe following distance and stay within the speed limit. This system adjusts a car's speed automatically so drivers don't have to.

control buttons on steering wheel in a modern car

Adaptive cruise control (ACC) is a system designed to help vehicles maintain a safe following distance and stay within the speed limit. This system adjusts a car's speed automatically so drivers don't have to.

Adaptive cruise control is one of 20 terms used to describe its functions so that you might see adaptive cruise control as the following in advertisements and vehicle descriptions:

  • Active cruise control
  • Dynamic cruise control
  • Radar cruise control
  • Automatic cruise control
  • Intelligent cruise control

ACC functions by sensory technology installed within vehicles such as cameras, lasers, and radar equipment, which creates an idea of how close one car is to another, or other objects on the roadway. For this reason, ACC is the basis for future car intelligence.

These sensory technologies allow the car to detect and warn the driver about potential forward collisions. When this happens, red lights begin to flash, and the phrase 'brake now!' appears on the dashboard to help the driver slow down. There might also be an audible warning.

Advantages of Adaptive Cruise Control

Limitations of adaptive cruise control.

Although there are many advantages to adaptive cruise control, there are still limitations to consider. One of the main faults in this system is the fact that it is not entirely autonomous. The driver of the vehicle still needs to practice safe driving habits that will work in tandem with this technology to produce the best results. Similarly, adverse weather conditions like snow, rain, or fog might confuse the system's sensors, as well as environmental factors such as driving through tunnels.

What Is the Difference Between a Level 1 Autonomous Car and a Level 2 Autonomous Car?

According to SAE International, when a car only has autonomous cruise control , it is considered to be a level 1 autonomous car. In contrast, a vehicle with autonomous cruise control and an additional feature, such as lane control, gets classified as a level 2 autonomous car.

How Much Does an Adaptive Cruise Control System Cost?

According to ExtremeTech, The cost of an adaptive cruise control system will vary depending on how many features you want. If you're going to have an ACC with all available features, you should be willing to pay anywhere between $2000 and $2500. If you are looking for minimal cruise control that would benefit speeds of up to 20-25 miles per hour, these more basic ACCs can cost as low as $500. The good news is that as ACC becomes more common, it will most likely reduce in price.

History of Adaptive Cruise Control

U.S. News says Mitsubishi first introduced adaptive cruise control in Japan in 1992 . This was a lidar-based distance detection system that detected objects that were getting too close. It was labeled as 'Debonair' and it was programmed to provide a warning to the driver about oncoming objects. The main difference was that it was the driver's job to apply the brakes and reduce their speed.

However, two years later in 1995, the Mitsubishi Diamante featured an upgraded approach to the Debonair called 'Preview Distance Control.' Unlike the original technology, this laser-powered system could adjust a driver's speed by downshifting or controlling the throttle. The driver was still responsible for applying the brakes.

From the early 2000s onward, big names in the car industry, such as Ford, BMW, Mercedes, Cadillac, Volkswagen, Infinity, Hyundai, Toyota, and Audi, created their versions of adaptive cruise control in their vehicles. These individual features have evolved into a high-tech system with automatic braking and speed control.

Types of Adaptive Cruise Control

Radar-based systems.

According to eInfoChips, radar-based systems work by placing radar-based sensors on or around plastic fascias to detect your vehicle's surroundings. Each radar sensor works together to create a comprehensive picture of the vehicle's proximity to other cars or potentially hazardous objects. This type of sensor can look different depending on the design and model of the car.

Laser-Based Systems

As mentioned by Electronic Design , this type of ACC system operates out of a large black box typically placed in the grille of your vehicle. It uses laser technology to detect the proximity of objects to your car. It does not operate well during rainstorms and other weather conditions.

Binocular Computer Vision Systems (Optical)

According to ExtremeTech, this is a relatively new ACC system put into use in 2013. It uses small cameras that are placed on the back of a vehicle's rearview mirror to detect front-facing objects.

Assisting Systems

Assisting systems are radar-based add-ons that customers can buy together. These pre-crash systems can offer lane control, brake assistance, cruise control, proximity alerts to objects like corners, and steering power.

Multi-Sensor Systems

According to Fierce Electronics , adaptive cruise control systems sometimes integrate more than one type of sensor to aid in a vehicle's operation. Multi-sensor systems incorporate several different sensor types to provide a driver with advanced information. These sensors might include GPS data equipment or cameras to gather information about a vehicle's geographic environment and proximity to other cars.

Predictive Systems

As mentioned by Autoblog, prediction systems are a type of ACC that uses sensory data to predict the actions of neighboring vehicles. This means that your car might slow down to brace for another vehicle suddenly switching lanes and, in doing so, promotes passenger safety.

Adaptive cruise control is evolving each year. Car companies are continuously making adjustments to this technology and, in doing so, creating more common and affordable options that can be purchased with a new car or added to older car models, making driving safer for everyday people.

Is it possible to upgrade standard Cruise Control on a 2019 Mk4 Focus Titanium X Automatic to the all singing and dancing Adaptive Cruise Control ?

The car does not have the radar module at the front but does have Speed Signs Recognition and Collision Avoidance.

It is doable, there are some posts on Forscan about it being done.

You will need to change the steering wheel button and configure and, possibly update the firmware in the ABS, CCM, SCCM and IPMA.

As you are automatic you should get lane centring assist and Stop & Go too.

Are you sure you don't have the radar? Mine was a 2019 Titanium manual with standard CC and I had a radar

Thanks

25 minutes ago, DaveT70 said: Are you sure you don't have the radar?

Hi Dave, thanks for your reply. To be honest, no I don't know that there is no radar, I just asumed that there wouldn't be. I found on Aliexpress (takes a couple of months 🤣 ) the new steering wheel assembly but han't found any info on doing the upgrade.

I will take a look on ForScan and see if I think I'm up to the challenge

I'd be very surprised if you don't have the radar.

You don't need a wheel or indeed a harness, just the cruise control switchpack that includes lane centring assist (two left buttons)

It has to be configured using code changes in CCM, BCMi, IPMA, IPC, ABS and SCCM and possibly PCM/TCM

The radar if you have it can be found behind the plastic square on the front grille (on the STX at least) It’s about the size of a ***** packet . I think all or most of the earlier Mk4s have radar. Mines a 69 plate …doesn’t have it. Or multi link for that matter 😤

It’s censored a common name for cigarettes!! Anyway the radar is definitely on cars that have the convenience pack. Auto parking, adaptive cruise control,  Flux capacitor etc

Hi Alex, I had a look yesterday at the front of the car and got my fingers through the lower grill, but could not see or feel anything behind the flat panel in the middle of the grill. Mine is a 2019 "19" reg.

I got a msg on the app saying my radar was obscured or words to that effect. Was advised to clean the radar , that was when I realised there’s nothing behind the plastic square on the grille. Was the lidar (?) camera on the windscreen needed cleaning. If the radars there it’s clear to see and/or feel.  Otherwise it’s hollow.

6 minutes ago, Alex.S said: radar is definitely on cars that have the convenience pack. Auto parking, adaptive cruise control,  Flux capacitor

No convenience pack on mine 😟 and funds running a little low so possibley can only afford to add one option. Not sure if I should go with adaptive cruise control or go the full hog and upgrade to a Flux Capacitor 🤣

Haha

I'll explain my situation to you, owner of a 2021 Ford Focus Active Mk4, I installed the front radar including the wiring and activated everything, the only thing I can't activate is the stop&go because I don't have the right ABS but someone on Internet changed the ABS firmware but unfortunately I don't know how to do it, if anyone can help me

Is Adaptive Cruise Control Worth It in 2024?

I t’s 2024. That means artificial intelligence (AI), planned habitats on the moon, and “The Fast and the Furious” films in the double digits. Hell, science fiction movies from the 1980s and 1990s predicted we’d be dead or desperately combatting sentient robots by now. However, not everything is on autopilot; adaptive cruise control (ACC) is some of the closest technology you’ll get to a fire-and-forget autonomous automobile in 2024. So, is it worth it?

Adaptive cruise control maintains a safe following distance and speed to take the guesswork out of highway cruising

Radar-guided cruise control, intelligent cruise control, active cruise control. You’ve heard the various terminology. However, they all mean something of the same thing: a technology suite that maintains speed and following distance with the vehicle ahead.

It might seem like a novelty flex you can bring up smugly to a buddy. However, it has its benefits. For instance, if you’ve done any extended highway driving, adaptive cruise control could be quite helpful. I’ve done the drive between Austin, Texas, and Louisville, Kentucky more than most. It’s a nice, round number– just over 1,000 miles from door to door.

During those drives, my wife finds herself, at times, frustrated by the inconsistency of drivers’ speeds on the open American highway system. She’ll set a speed in cruise control, drive for a bit, and have to cancel or discontinue cruise control to overtake a vehicle. Well, if that sounds like a frustration you know all too well, adaptive cruise control could be the solution. Frankly, if you’re distracted (and don’t be that person), an adaptive system could be the difference between safe cruising and a crash .

The intelligent cruise control systems use sensory equipment to take the adjustments out of drivers’ hands

With ACC, a vehicle will use sensory equipment like lasers, a radar system, or cameras to detect a vehicle ahead. As such, the suite will adjust vehicle speed and following distance to provide a comfortable cruise.

Fortunately, it’s 2024. That means several cars offer adaptive cruise control as part of a driver-aid suite. And it’s not just posh luxury cars, either.

The 2024 Ford Mustang offers ACC as part of the Ford Co-Pilot 360 suite. In addition to Ford’s seventh-generation pony car, the 2024 Nissan Z and Subaru BRZ have adaptive cruise control functions on their options sheets. Of course, ACC doesn’t give you carte blanche to be a distracted clown on our shared highways. Pay attention when driving, even with adaptive cruise control.

First refuelling for Russia’s Akademik Lomonosov floating NPP

!{Model.Description}

adaptive cruise control ford focus

The FNPP includes two KLT-40S reactor units. In such reactors, nuclear fuel is not replaced in the same way as in standard NPPs – partial replacement of fuel once every 12-18 months. Instead, once every few years the entire reactor core is replaced with and a full load of fresh fuel.

The KLT-40S reactor cores have a number of advantages compared with standard NPPs. For the first time, a cassette core was used, which made it possible to increase the fuel cycle to 3-3.5 years before refuelling, and also reduce by one and a half times the fuel component in the cost of the electricity produced. The operating experience of the FNPP provided the basis for the design of the new series of nuclear icebreaker reactors (series 22220). Currently, three such icebreakers have been launched.

The Akademik Lomonosov was connected to the power grid in December 2019, and put into commercial operation in May 2020.

Electricity generation from the FNPP at the end of 2023 amounted to 194 GWh. The population of Pevek is just over 4,000 people. However, the plant can potentially provide electricity to a city with a population of up to 100,000. The FNPP solved two problems. Firstly, it replaced the retiring capacities of the Bilibino Nuclear Power Plant, which has been operating since 1974, as well as the Chaunskaya Thermal Power Plant, which is more than 70 years old. It also supplies power to the main mining enterprises located in western Chukotka. In September, a 490 km 110 kilovolt power transmission line was put into operation connecting Pevek and Bilibino.
