Types of Pumpkin Patches

There are several types of pumpkin patches. Some have other fun attractions like a hayride, train ride, corn maze , petting zoo, carousel, zip-line, bounce house, and more. Other pumpkin patches are simply for finding pumpkins.

You will find three main types of pumpkin patches: Pick your own, already harvested, and church lawns. No matter which you choose, they often have other attractions to keep the little ones happily entertained.

How to Find a Pumpkin Patch Near You

Check your local newspaper or family resource guide for a nearby pumpkin patch. Another easy way to find a local pumpkin patch is to type “pumpkin patch near me” into the Google search bar.

Another good question is about the type of pumpkins they have available. Below are my tips for choosing the type of pumpkin you need. You may also want to ask if there will be food available or places to eat if you want to bring your own family picnic .

How to Choose A Pumpkin

There are three main types of pumpkins: carving, gourds, and baking or pie pumpkins. The type of pumpkin you need will depend on what you will do with it.

You will want to ensure the pumpkin patch you visit has the type of pumpkin you want. Will you be carving, decorating, baking, or using pumpkins for the educational activities listed in the next section?

If you want to make homemade pumpkin puree , you will want to choose a small 8 to 10-inch sugar pumpkin. Sugar pumpkins are sweeter than other pumpkins and have been developed for eating. Look for a firm pumpkin with no soft spots or signs of any rot. A few more pumpkin recipe ideas are listed below.

If you are carving your pumpkins or decorating them in some way, look for a visually appealing pumpkin without any soft spots or signs of rot. Choose a pumpkin with a stem and ensure it sits how you want it to when placed on a flat surface.

You will also want to choose a color and shape that will work for the design you have in mind. Pumpkin carving ideas and no-carve decorating ideas can be found below.

Make sure to grab an extra pumpkin or two to try some fun pumpkin activities for kids listed in the next section!

Cool article for pumpkin patches. You mentioned you should try to find out if the pumpkin patch has pumpkins you are looking for. It sounds important to research different types of pumpkins before hand so you have a better idea of what you should look for.

' src=

Yes, it is Taylor.

I think most pumpkin patches that are open to the public have carving pumpkins available. But if you are looking for pumpkins to bake with it is important to make sure the pumpkin patch has sugar pie pumpkins!

' src=

This is a really good idea. We have just concluded a month long unit study on Halloween and pumpkins today. As part of the unit study, I took the twins to a pumpkin patch and read stories about pumpkins as well. We even had our own version of a culinary bake off with pumpkins. And we did some math related to pumpkins too. I even had the children participate in some fun science experiments that revolved around pumpkins.

To wrap things up, I finished by allowing both kids to do some art with pumpkins. Next time I’m going to have them write a recount about their trip to a pumpkin patch. And make a mini fact file. The kids loved it. I made pumpkin soup and pie. We even tried making pumpkin crumble. It was lovely!

Wow, Leah! That sounds like you had an amazing time learning about pumpkins… Well done!

Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

virtual-pumpkin-patch-field-trip

A Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip is perfect, especially during the fall season. Let’s go on a  trip to a pumpkin patch. A Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip is the BEST fall activity for your students.

Happy Fall Y’all! Here in the south, we love fall. I especially love the fall season and all the fun activities and beautiful weather it brings. I can tell my students do too.  As teachers, we are able to implement so many fun components to our classrooms, standards, and curriculums especially classroom décor and coordinating fall-themed activities. I mean, it’s every teacher’s dream is to find super engaging lessons that are also cute!

Virtual field trips are perfect to implement in the classroom. Whether you are able to take field trips away from school or not, virtual field trips are still a great option and can be implemented in many different ways. You can implement it for Fun Friday or choose a standards-based field trip. Personally, standards-based virtual field trips are my favorite because I feel you get the most bang for your buck.

Students get to experience places and things they otherwise never would, plus the experience is directly related to the standards. Oh wait, I forgot the BEST part...with all the virtual field trips you find here, the work is done for you!

Travel virtually with your students to explore an amazing pumpkin patch in California. The narrator educates students on pumpkin sizes, shapes, and colors. The cool and interesting facts students will learn are directly related to the Pumpkin Patch Virtual Field Trip resource . Students will learn so much about pumpkins. They will learn the life cycle of a pumpkin and learn how a pumpkin grows in all colors, shapes, and sizes. My students also think the life cycle of a pumpkin is interesting and enjoy this unit. If you really want to step up the unit, bake pumpkin seeds for student's to taste. You also can purchase or bake homemade pumpkin pie for student's to try. My students love this tasty treat. When I started incorporating pumpkin pie into this unit, I was very surprised at how many students had never eaten it. It's a cool memory for the first time students taste it to be with their favorite teacher!

  • Life Cycle of a Pumpkin Color Sheet
  • How to Use Pumpkin
  • Pumpkin Color Sheet

As you can see, everything you need to have an EPIC virtual field trip to the pumpkin patch is included. This resource can be broken up into 1-2 days depending on your schedule. I know you are going to love this experience as much as your students.

Virtual Pumpkin Patch Field Trip Extensions

I wanted to share with you a few suggestions for extensions. If you have a local pumpkin farm, Walmart, or grocery store nearby, ask for donations of pumpkins. You may also ask parents to send in a pumpkin with their child if you have good parent support.  If possible get one for every student. Allow students time to decorate their pumpkin and take it home.

If getting a pumpkin for every student isn’t possible, grab a couple of different shapes and sizes of pumpkins for your classroom. This is great so students can smell and touch the pumpkin. If time allows, cut the pumpkin open so students can see and touch the seeds and guts on the pumpkins.

To go the extra mile, roast pumpkins seeds for your class. You also can order roasted pumpkin seeds from Amazon. Yes, Amazon has everything and I am thankful!

I don't know about you but I love this time of year. The fall season offers so many fun activities that can incorporate inside and outside of the classroom. Student are energized from summer break. I also love the idea of fall festivals, pumpkins, Halloween, Thanksgiving, leading up to Christmas.

Children's Books about Pumpkins

My students love books! I put together a great list of children’s books about pumpkins for you. My students love a good read aloud and the fall season offers so many fun choices that you can relate to content. Click the links below to shop on Amazon or watch a video recording of the read-aloud.

I hope you will implement a virtual pumpkin patch field trip and the other activities mentioned with your students!  They are sure to enjoy participating and making fun memories. I just know your students will enjoy the virtual field trip pumpkin patch as much as mine do!

Enjoy your trip!

Happy Fall Ya'll!

Pumpkin Patch Field Trip

  • Halloween , Fall , Printables , Field Trips

My most favorite field trip that we take as a class each year is to the pumpkin patch. There’s just nothing like Fall.  Grab a free printable to help your class trip!

field trip to a pumpkin patch

This activity goes well with these resources:

Pumpkin Craft

The kids just get the biggest kick out of getting to choose a pumpkin from the patch to bring home and we always learn so much about the fruits and vegetables that they grow on the farm. Since pumpkins are fruit, we also learn that cucumbers and tomatoes are fruits too since they have seeds. We also learn about corn and its different uses. We learn the differences between Indian corn, feed corn, and the corn we eat. It always blows me a way to learn how much corn is in so many products we use. Think toothpaste, diapers, shampoo, and more!

pumpkin-patch-field-trip

When we get back to school, it’s always so hard to transition back after a field trip. Parent volunteers leaving, the kids are hyper from having fun and riding the bus. Sometimes even having to get them to eat a sack lunch at the tables outside since we missed regular lunch. Let’s just say it makes it tough to get much of anything else productive done in the classroom for the rest of the day. I know we’ve all been there!

I’ve made up this printable to give the kids to work on after all of the craziness. It gets them practicing their writing and has them remembering back to all of the fun things that they saw earlier that day of the field trip. It’s very helpful to make that transition back into learning mode!

Annually, my family ventures out to the Irvine Park Railroad’s Annual Pumpkin Patch  in Orange, for a good time.  Field Trip Girl especially enjoys this pumpkin patch because of the face painting, tractor rides and carnival games.  The Irvine Park Railroad also does a great job at creating a classic pumpkin patch feeling, along with a few games and activities.  This season we also plan to visit Peltzers Farms in Temecula to go through their gigantic corn maze.  Field Trip Boy loves mazes!
