FULL REPORT for the Pico Duarte Hike
How to Hike Pico Duarte?
The highest mountain in the caribbean., when you think about dominican republic you will probably think about beach, sand and a good drink, resting on a chair-long under the punta cana sun but dominican mountains have a totally different climate and weather compared to punta cana beaches., pico duarte is the highest peak in the entire caribbean and it´s a mountain you must hike if you are going to spend some days in the dominican republic, especially if you love outdoors activities. , , so, how to hike the highest mountain in the caribbean, located at the center of the dominican republic and inside the borders of the armando bermudez national park, pico duarte stands at 3,101 meters (10,173 feet) above sea level. a very high landmark if you think that the entire dominican republic has only 48,671 square kilometers., the shortest route to the summit is the one called “la cienaga” which has 23 kilometers (14 miles) from base camp to the top or 46 kilometers (28 miles) round trip. this is the route that goes by jarabacoa and manabao in the dominican province of la vega. , this is the most used route by hikers and adventurers that challenge themselves for the prize of being the highest person in the caribbean., la cienaga is a small village located inside a big valley. surrounded by beautiful mountains, la cienaga is home to all of our guides and mules you will meet on this journey. it´s the perfect place to spend a night to acclimatize before heading towards the highest dominican mountain..
Pico Duarte has 5 different routes:
- Oliver Puello
- Constanza – Valle del Tetero – Pico Duarte
Each of them has its own difficulty level and length.
All of our pico duarte hikes start in la cienaga, which is about one hour away from jarabacoa by car., we spend one night in this village for some reasons:.
- To know the local life
- Buy a beer in the colmado
- To meet its people and small streets
- To acclimatize for the next-day-hike
You will spend the first night in our tents surrounded by a beautiful river and by the amazing local flora. We will provide you with comfortable tents, sleeping bags and pads so you can spend the night the right way but if you want to sleep a little bit more comfortable we can offer you a nice and warm room we have near base camp.
La cienaga base camp is a safe place and you can park your car there without any issue although there is always a ranger named german who is a very warm and kind human being. , this place has toilets and solar panels so you can recharge your electronic devices and a nice river if you want to swim., the place is the last piece of civilization you will have before the first hike., to get to la cienaga we offer transportation in our suv from any city or airport if you don´t have access to a car or if you don´t want to drive in the dominican highways., the next morning you wake up early to get your gear packed so the mules can carry it properly to la comparticion high camp. , that morning our guides will offer you a tasty dominican coffee, hot chocolate, bread and some bananas. this is a proper light breakfast given the early hour. remember to take your hiking snacks with you. your next cooked meal will be at 5:00 pm., the reason for this is that you are not allowed to cook in the middle of the trail. just at the camps..
The hike begins!
The first hike is the most challenging of all and you can finish it in something between 8-10 hours.
The thing is that you have to hike from base camp to la compartición (high camp) and the distance between each camp is 18 kilometers of mountain, however, there are a lot of stops along the trail. , the first one is called “los tablones” which comprehends an easy hike of about one hour from base camp. los tablones is located at 1270 masl (4165 feet) and the terrain is mostly flat with some small hills to warm the muscles up. , when you arrive to los tablones you rest for about 5 minutes, refill your water bottles and go on .
There are some watersprings along the route and you can refill without any issues, however, if you feel uncomfortable with this you can buy a filter and carry it with you or we can include you bottled water.
Our guides will be with you all the time and each of them has a walkie-talkie to communicate between them because good and fluid communication is always an important part of mountaineering, the trail leads to the second stop called “la cotorra”. this stop is one hour away from los tablones, but now the terrain is not flat anymore. from now on you need to save energy, hike smart and breathe properly because of the altitude changes you will experience..
La Cotorra is at 1720 MASL (5641 feet) and here you will do the same. Rest for 5-10 minutes, eat a bit of your snacks and continue the hike. La Cotorra don´t have any source of water but you will find it at the next one which is called “La Laguna”.
La Laguna is at 1980 MASL (6494 feet) and the distance from La Cotorra is 45 minutes roughly. On this stop our guide will give you a tasty pineapple to recharge your batteries!
Now it´s time to keep going to the next stop called “el cruce”., el cruce is at 2100 masl (6888 feet) and there is a fork that divides the route to valle del tetero (left) and pico duarte (right). obviously you want to be the highest person in the caribbean so the trail that goes to your right is your destination, el cruce is 30 minutes away from la laguna and this part of the trail is very sunny and dry so you better keep your body temperature as low as possible because this is one of the reasons people tend to dehydrate and get tired in this part..
Take it easy and climb slow and steady. You will make it!
This is a mental challenge and your thoughts will determine your success on this mountain. avoid negative thoughts, try to clear your mind with good music or a good conversation with your partner or guide. this will definitely help you a lot to deal with the endless slopes., at the middle of the hill you will have a stop so you can rest for 10 minutes and keep on going to your next and last stop called “aguita fria” which is at 2.5 hours away from el cruce..
Aguita Fria is a pretty interesting place.
Located at 2700 masl (8858 feet) t his stop gives birth to two of the most important rivers in the dominican republic yaque del norte and yaque del sur so basically this stop it´s a very important place for the whole dominican ecosystem. , from this source of water you can refill your water bottles., if you have the opportunity of having bad weather conditions on this stop, you better keep on going because this part can get really really cold, the hiking time from aguita fria to la comparticion high camps is 2 hours..
Finally! The first hike is over!
La comparticion is a nice place. there you will have a kitchen, a big wood hut, a campfire area and toilets. here you will spend one or two nights depending on your trip itinerary., for the 2.5 days / 2 nights itinerary you will spend one night at base camp and another night at la comparticion., for the 3.5 days / 3 nights itinerary you will spend one night at base camp and two nights at la comparticion., once you get to high camp you pick up the bags that the mules carried and pick a sleeping spot in the big wood hut available for all the hikers. we can also set you one of our tents if you want more privacy., our cook will be preparing a nice dinner based on rice, salads, chicken and soup. this will fill your energy levels and help you adapt better to the altitude of high camp., meanwhile you can go to the water springs and get a nice and rewarding bath that is great for your sore muscles., if you decide to do our 2.5-day-itinerary you better go to sleep after dinner because you will need to wake up at 3:00 am so you can be on top of the caribbean just before sunrise..
Watching the sunrise on top of Pico Duarte is a beautiful and rewarding spectacle you must experience. At this hour the summit is cold and windy so you must have your layers ready so you and your guide don´t get frozen because of the low temperatures.
Temperatures on pico duarte can be very cold at night and early in the morning and sometimes can be below the freezing point. after watching the sunrise you hike down back to high camp where a proper breakfast will be waiting for you made by our guide., after eating your breakfast, you finish to pack your gear and start the hike back to base camp., if you choose the 3.5-day-itinerary you will spend a second night in high camp and hike down the next day., once at base camp, the hike is done and you can feel the happiness of getting to base camp safe and sound., important information:, for the pico duarte hike, some hikers tend to hire local guides once they get to la cienaga. but having reserved a guide at least some days before the hike is the best choice. our guides know how to deal with a lot of situations and they definitely know how and when to give you the right information on every stage of the trail., pico duarte is not an easy game. a very important thing we require is that you start to read little by little about the route, conditions and so on., a good previous training is the best tool to deal with this mountain. you can read more about this here: training for pico duarte, please do not expect any luxury on this mountain. this is a pretty basic and rural experience and we will do our best to make you feel safe and comfortable..

Hike Pico Duarte - the highest mountain in the Caribbean
Foggy weather at Pico Duarte

The Dominican Republic shares the island with Haiti , occupying two-thirds of the territory. It's not only home to some of the best beaches in the world, you can also find open water caves, waterfalls , rivers, valleys, lakes, rainforests and tall mountainous regions. The country's highest and largest mountain range is the Cordillera Central, which includes Pico Duarte, the highest peak in both the Dominican Republic and all of the Caribbean islands. Several peaks there exceed 5,000 ft.
With its impressive peaks and surprisingly cool climate (by Caribbean standards) the Cordillera Central mountain range is sometimes nicknamed the Dominican Alps. The Jose Armando Bermudez National Park (Bermudez Park for short) straddles the Cordillera range and is home to the imposing Pico Duarte - 10,000+ feet (3,000 meters) in altitude.
Do you love adventure? Want to try something different during your next vacation? Come and climb the highest mountain of the Caribbean!
Getting to the park entrance
Most hikers who visit Pico Duarte come through Jarabacoa . At Manabao in Jarabacoa, there is an official park entrance, where hikers begin the trail. You'll also find the park’s office where you can hire local expert guides and rent hiking equipment and mules to carry your food and bags. During high season , you can find many other groups in Jarabacoa preparing for the trip to the summit, and some of those groups will be happy for you to join them.
The hike is usually done in three days and two nights. Day one usually takes you 11 miles from La Ciénaga up to Compartición, where you’ll sleep at an 8,000 feet elevation, and day two is dedicated to a round trip from Compartición to Pico Duarte then back again.
The La Ciénaga route via the entrance of Parque Bermúdez is considered the best approach because the weather on that side of the summit is milder, with breezes and rain showers more likely. It also gives you the fastest access to Valle del Tetero, a beautiful valley where hikers often stop to make camp and relax.
The other three marked routes include Mata Grande, Las Lagunas, Los Corralitos and Sabaneta, ranging from 25 to 70 miles in length and from 3 to 7 or more days’ hiking. All routes guarantee amazing views of tropical, pine, mountain broadleaf, and cloud forests. Talk to your group and your guide about the pros and cons of each.

Hiking Pico Duarte, Dominican Republic
The tallest peak in the Caribbean—once renamed Pico Trujillo by the eponymous dictator—is one for the bucket list traveler. Even if you don’t keep tabs, accomplishing the hike to the highest summit of the Antilles earns you lifetime bragging rights.
Should you do it? That will depend on your level of fitness, as well as how many days you have to spare on your trip. You’ll need at the very least two full days for Pico Duarte (and possibly a full third to rest your bones from the hike). While there are several hiking routes to the peak, it’s easier to take the one that departs from La Ciénaga or Mata Grande, through the entrance of Parque Bermúdez, simply because the climate is cooler on this side, with more rain and breezes likely, and there are several river sources that run through it.
Day one of the hike usually goes from La Ciénaga to Compartición (18 kilometers [11 miles], up to 2,438 meters [8,000 feet] elevation), and day two, from Compartición to Pico Duarte and back.
The latest official rates for guides and mules per day are listed outside the Bermudez park office in La Ciénaga . The national park entrance fee is RD$100 (US$2.18), a guide costs RD$800 (US$17.44) per day, and mules RD$400 (US$8.82) per person and RD$450 (US$9.81) per carrier mule. Two mules per person are mandatory, as you might tire or need help, and provisions need to be carried separately. It’s much simpler and safer to hop on an arranged expedition with one of the tour companies and individual guides listed below.
Last but not least: if you’ve never attempted such a hike, be prepared in terms of knowing what to pack. It’s not a super-technical hike, but it does require endurance and good fitness. Do your research and ask your hotel or guide for advice. The two most important elements are proper hiking boots and proper clothing to accommodate for the cold nights, which sometimes reach below freezing. You should also remember to bring a waterproof bag and gear, swimwear, sunscreen, toilet paper, and bug repellent. Stay hydrated and keep your own pace—don’t kill yourself trying to achieve the hike in a shorter time than allotted.

If you’re independent travelers looking to save a buck and not leave your vacation fortune on a single hike (it’s incredibly pricey to hike Pico Duarte), contact the young David Durán of Jarabacoa Eco Adventures (tel. 849/917-7638). He’s one of the most reasonably priced tour guides.
David grew up in Jarabacoa and knows the mountains and their hiking conditions like the back of his hand. Through his company, and working along with guests of Jarabacoa Mountain Hostel, he has guided numerous visitors to Pico Duarte and back, as well as to other peaks in the area. David takes care of all your arrangements, including transportation to the park entrance, mules, meals and water, and tents for the two-day expedition.
The journey up to Pico Duarte takes two days and one night at a minimum. If you choose to space out the hike, it will cost more—just discuss your needs with the guide beforehand. It goes without saying that you should be in good health before embarking on this journey. It’s no easy hike, and you’ll be on your feet for at least eight hours in one stretch on the first day. But the evening spent next to the bonfire and under the stars is as unforgettable as reaching the summit itself.
Rancho Baiguate (tel. 809/574-6890 or U.S. tel. 646/727-7783, US$255/3-day, 2 night pp) is the other major organizer of hikes to Pico Duarte, for hotel guests as well as anyone wishing to join their groups. They have a minimum of 2 nights, and an expedition stretching up to five days and four nights if you’d rather space it out that long.
From Cabarete, Iguana Mama (tel. 809/654-2325, 9am-5pm Mon.-Sun.) offers a three-day, two-night excursion to Pico Duarte (US$425, all-inclusive). Note you are on your own getting to Jarabacoa. You can easily reach town via public transport or a rental car.
Getting There and Around
Most who visit Pico Duarte come through or choose Jarabacoa as their base. The latter is probably the easiest due to the number of organized tour operators; you’ll have more luck finding groups to join in high season.
The drive to the visitor center at La Ciénaga de Manabao to reach Parque Bermúdez and the hiking entrance to Pico Duarte on this side is one of the most spectacular rides surrounding Jarabacoa. It’s even more enjoyable by motorbike, if you’ve got time to spare and can spend a half day here—bathing in the Río Yaque del Norte along the way—before beginning your hike the next morning. There are overnight bunk beds at the park office, or you can inquire there for cabanas to rent (call park ranger Herman, tel. 809/271-8929, US$10 for four).

Guía Excursión al Pico Duarte
¿Te has propuesto subir al pico Duarte?
4-Provincia San Juan-Sabaneta-Pico Duarte.

-Come alimentos que te den energía. Bebe agua en pequeña cantidad. Que te mantenga hidratado, pero no lleno.
-Camina a tu propio ritmo.

Hiking In The Dominican Republic: Finding Trails & Hiking Pico Duarte
W hen hearing ‘Dominican Republic’, hiking doesn’t initially come to mind. For most, it’s images of all-inclusive resorts, radiant sun, beautiful blue beaches and fine white sand. For others, maybe it’s merengue and bachata (traditional music genres). But we should foster another image – that of hiking in the Dominican Republic.
The Dominican Republic is situated in the Caribbean Sea and shares the “Hispaniola Island” with Haiti. It’s the second largest island in the Greater Antilles after Cuba and has almost 800 miles of coastline making this a paradise for adventurous tourists.
Indeed, there is so much to explore here for anyone who is eager to throw themselves into an adventure.
And if visiting the Caribbean is on your bucket list – and you love hiking – then the Dominican Republic is perfect for you.

Hiking In The Dominican Republic: Trails & Mountain Ranges
Over the last 15 years the interest in hiking in the Dominican Republic has really grown. So much so, that hiking excursions run around the country between the months of December to April. These trips usually last three to five days, with the aim of hiking to the highest point of whatever mountain that trip is geared towards.
The hikes mainly take place in nature reserves which have various forest ranger points visible along the way.
In fact the nature reserves are fantastic places to hike, either by yourself or with a group. The reserves and their walking routes are well signposted, and there are often rest points along the designated trails. You can also find hundreds of species of birds, many endemic to the country, while walking around the reserves. A cheap compact book to help identify them – like this one – would be ideal to bring with you.
There are 29 national parks and protected areas in the Dominican Republic, all with their own charm and natural sights to explore. You can find out where those are – and which one may be the closest for you to visit – by clicking here. The forest rangers in each national park or protected area are usually very friendly, and are happy to tell tourists about fantastic walking trails to try out.
This map also shows where the national parks are in relation to the rest of the country. While this National Geographic one is far more detailed, and can help pinpoint routes and places to hike.
There are also three mountain ranges in the Dominican Republic which are perfect for hiking.
“Cordillera Central” where the highest peak “Pico Duarte” is located.
“Cordillera Septentrional” with its highest point called “Diego de Ocampo Peak”.
And “Cordillera Oriental” with “Sierra de Bahoruco and Sierra de Neiba” in the southeast region.
All three mountain ranges have a variety of hiking trails that traverse a stunning landscape of lush green forest, long valleys, waterfalls and rivers.
In fact Pico Duarte located on the main mountain range Cordillera Central in the José Armando Bermúdez National Park is the highest peak in the West Indies with an elevation of 3,087 meters above sea level. There are several routes to hike on Pico Duarte, and it’s where we recommend hiking when visiting this stunning Caribbean paradise. Below we explain how!
There are other peaks in the region worth going to as well. Such as La Pelona at 3,085 meters and La Rusilla at 3,030 meters above sea level. They both offer excellent hiking trails that are arguably some of the best in the Caribbean.
Hiking Pico Duarte : An Adventure You’ll Never Forget!
If you want to hike Pico Duarte there are five routes to choose from. Two of them are situated around water sources and are mainly green valleys with stunning views. The other three are dry paths that are far more challenging, and have fewer waterfalls and rivers along them.
All paths tend to be safe but it’s best to go with a guide – which we recommend as the hikes can take 3-5 days – as they know the hiking trails in the Dominican Republic inside out.
A good level of fitness is required to navigate these gorgeous routes. Comfortable clothes, hiking shoes or sport shoes for long walks are needed, and a raincoat could also be useful as it rains often.
If doing a hiking excursion with a group – such as this one – prepare to start before the sun rises. A bus will take hikers to the town nearest to the selected hiking route, and horses are often used to help hiking guides with carrying equipment (food, camping tents, sleeping sacks etc..) along the way.
The shortest route to hike Pico Duarte, and our recommended route, is ‘La Cienega’. This route is around 23 km long from the base to the top of the peak.
It’s best to start walking at sunrise, before reaching the first rest point “Los Tablones”, situated 1,278 meters up, and 8 to 10 kilometers from the starting point.
It is an easy walk just to warm up for what is coming, as the hiking gets more serious. Don’t expect a phone signal after this first rest stop, and the temperature will get a little chillier.
Warm clothes therefore are a must, such as gloves, hat, and a jacket. Like many of the hiking routes in the Dominican Republic there can be fog when you ascend into the clouds – but the view you get as the sun breaks through is amazing.
Incredible views, beautiful greenery and breathtaking views of the valleys, will make you feel like the hike and the challenge was well worth it.
The second main stop on La Cienega is “La Cotorra” at 1,720 meters, which involves more difficult hiking and gives a walker a good test before the real ascent begins.
That ascent is the route towards “La Laguna”, a stop at 1,980 meters with beautiful water springs.
Next comes “El Cruce” at 2,180 meters, and after this stop is what locals call “La Loma del arrepentimiento” (Hill of Regret) an ascent that is challenging but one that feels great to overcome.
“Agüita Fría” at 2,650 meters is the next key point on the route and one of the highest spots which hikers should reach on the first day of their walk. It’s here that two of the main rivers in the Dominican Republic are born (Yaque del Norte and Yaque del Sur).
Afterwards there is a descent called “La Vela” (the candle) which will take approximately one hour, before hikers then reach “La Compartición” at 2,450 meters.
This is where most excursions set up camp for the night. Here dinner will be served and walkers and hikers will socialize with each other under a night sky full of stars, with the sound of crickets chirping around them.
The next day before the sun rises get ready to face the biggest challenge but also the most rewarding part of the hike since the top of the peak awaits you. After breakfast and all the morning rituals, first stop is “Valle de Lili” at 2,950 meters. From there the last trail is taken, 30 minutes of walking up and you reach the top of the peak “Pico Duarte” – 3,087 meters above sea level!
At the top of the peak is the statue of Juan Pablo Duarte (Liberator of the Dominican Republic) who is often referred to as the father of the country. Enjoy the views, and relax – you’re one of just 3000 people who get to see the view from the summit of this mountain per year!

Pico Duarte is a worthwhile trail way but too pricey if taken as private (solo) tour!
Blessed with great weather, hike was very nice and unique DR experience! Booked a solo 2.5 days tour for USD 360 but did it finally in 2 days (at 66)! Support documentation and information before hike was informative and clear. Disappointed about quality of food although was warned beforehand of a "rustic" experience. Lunch at end of hike at Park Entrance was tasty and served in a clean plate/fork and cup. After trip had some stomach issues! In my opinion, tour for DR standard is too expensive and "solo" surcharge of USD 110 not justified. And by the way, tip for guide is not included! My suggestion: take your time and shop around...
I Highly recommend Guías de Alturas. My husband and I hiked with Joel and his crew at the beginning of March. We were fortunate to have great weather. Joel was in touch with us to prepare us for the trip. Do not think this is an easy or luxurious excursion. First you must train for the length, steepness and altitude of the hike. You must realize (and Joel will tell you all of this)you may be hiking in the dark, that you will sleep in a tent, it will be cold at night, the bathroom and bathing facilities are rudimentary. But, Joel and his crew make it a memorable trip. You will be rewarded with a view many people do not experience in the Dominican Republic.
Thanks Maureen & Felix for booking with us. You have such an amazing vibe! God bless u!
We did the tour with Joel and loved it! Not only the good information transmitted but how enjoyable the journey has been... Making us all participate... excellent experience. And to you as a company, thank you for offering a tour of the highest mountain in the Caribbean, a commendable job. Totally recommended, not only for the environment and the route, but also for the experience. I emphasize the quality of everything, the food, the materials that I rent. I congratulate and thank the guides for the treatment received, their professionalism and care. Five stars for the staff.
Thanks Mr Jhonatan for your excellent review about our services! We really appreciate it! Hope to see you again.
Such a amazing experience! The whole team was fantastic. I had a great time hiking the Pico Duarte with Guias de Alturas. Well organized. The logistics with the meals and the times of departure and estimated arrival to Compartición was so well coordinated. It allowed the hikers to rest well and relax and enjoy the astonishing views of the adjacent mountains Pelona and Rucilla. It was a one of a kind experience and I can’t wait to come back with this phenomenal team of professionals. 100% recommended.
Thanks Aileen!!! We are glad you enjoyed the Pico Duarte experience!! :)
Hiking to the Pico Duarte was wonderful experience with the best staff! Guías de Alturas have thought about everything so you can focus on enjoying the trip. The organization and communication indicate the professionalism of the company. Awesome guides, prepared and dedicated to make the route as exciting and safe as it can get. The trip is totally recommended and encouraged as long as you book it with Guías de Alturas ;)
I had an amazing trek to the top of Pico Duarte with Guias the alturas: i totally reccomend it! They are the best: a small company of young people who love hiking and love Pico Duarte. I did the 2 day hike. It was pretty challenging, but Guias the alturas gave me everything I need: a local guide, a mule to carry my stuff, mattress and sleeping bag. And delicious food cooked on the spot! The 3 day hike it's a little bit more relaxad, but you still need to be a little prepared. The first day it's going to be tough, take your time (or ride a mule!).
Thank you Davide for your amazing review about your experience. We really appreciate your trust in our guiding services! Thanks for visiting our mountains!
