Legends of Irish music & song The FUREYS, renowned for their hit songs ‘I will love you’, ‘When you were sweet 16’, ‘The Green fields of France’, ‘The old man’, ‘Red rose café’, ‘From Clare to here’, ‘Her father didn’t like me anyway’, ‘Leaving Nancy’, ‘Steal away’ etc return to Nells Jazz and Blues on 27 th  November 2018 in this their 40 th Anniversary year.

The  FUREYS  have been entertaining audiences worldwide for 40 years, audiences that have included former Australian Prime Minister John Howard, Former Irish President Mary McAleese and the late Pope John Paul while Tony Blair has publicly stated his favourite peace song of all time is the  FUREYS  “Green Fields of France”. Recently Ireland President Michael D Higgins attended their concert in Dublin’s National Concert Hall.

The band was formed in 1978 literally by accident. George, Paul and Davey were playing in Denmark with their own band called the Buskers and Eddie and Finbar, while touring in Germany were involved in a road accident. When George and Paul got news of the accident they immediately travelled to Germany to be with their brothers. They then decided that they should all be playing together and this was the start of the  FUREYS .

Inevitably changes have occurred over the years. Their brother Paul died suddenly in June 2002 and Finbar left the band in December 1996, however George and Eddie have continued to delight audiences on their tours and have just released a new CD ‘The Fureys…40 years on…to be continued’

The oldest of the brothers, Eddie Furey left home in 1966 and travelled to Scotland at the time of the great folk revival where he met and shared accommodation in Edinburgh with then unknown folk singers Billy Connolly, Gerry Rafferty and Alex Campbell, now all famous in their own right. In 1969 with his brother Finbar, he was the special guest for the Clancy Brothers and Tommy Makem throughout the USA and Canada. In 1971 he moved to mainland Europe where he toured for seven years, building up a huge following particularly in Germany. Dave Stewart from the Eurythmics has credited Eddie with teaching him his first chords on guitar when they met up in the North East of England while Dave was still a teenager.

The  FUREYS  are responsible for some of the most stirring music ever to capture the public imagination. Their folk based music has received standing ovations in some of the biggest concert halls of the world and they credit their musical ability to their parents, Ted and Nora, who were well known musicians themselves. They encouraged their sons to play music from a very early age and there was live traditional music in their house almost nightly.

Their emotive songs stir many emotions….tears and laughter, sadness and joy.

Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in africa, travel writer says.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Eight people have accused Norwegian Cruise Line (NCL) of abandoning them on a tiny island in Africa after a private tour ran late and the group missed the embarkation cut-off time.

Four of the group are elderly and another is pregnant, and though the ship was still at anchor, they were denied boarding.

The ship, the Norwegian Dawn, set sail without them — and it was right to do so.

Once, I was late to check in for a flight. I jumped out of the taxi, sprinted to the counter (which is no mean feat when you’re hauling luggage) and arrived at the desk sweating bullets, prepared to get on my knees and grovel if it meant I’d be allowed through.

I began to tell my sob story to the lady at the desk, heart hammering and lungs gasping for air, when she politely interrupted and shook her head.

Norwegian CRUISELINE

In the nicest way possible, she said this: “Stiff bickies.” (OK, yes, I’ve paraphrased.)

Sure, the plane was still at the airport, no more than a few hundred meters from where I was standing. However, the luggage had already been loaded, the manifest had already been finalized, and the other passengers were already boarding.

There was no way they were going to let me board, nor should they have.

You see, I had been on a whale-watching tour about two-and-a-half hours south of the airport — hey, it was my last day, I wanted to make it count.

I planned it to perfection, except for one detail: We spotted a playful pod right at the very end, so the captain offered to give us some bonus time to enjoy the view.

With one eye on the magnificent mammals and the other on my watch, I held on to a flicker of hope that I might make it.

I jumped on the bus back to town, flagged down a cab and asked the driver to hurry. I launched out of the car like a 100m sprinter launches out of starting blocks and ran into the terminal.

Alas, my proverbial ship had sailed.

Was it a bummer? Absolutely. But imagine delaying the other 158 or so passengers scheduled to depart on the Boeing 737, asking the crew to extend their shifts, or holding the plane and disrupting airport traffic … all so little old me could drop off my bags, scurry through security, and find my gate.

Imagine the awkwardness if I stepped onto that plane. What do you say? “Sorry, guys, my bad, lol.”

Keep up with The Post's coverage of the Norwegian Cruise debacle

  • Eight Norwegian Cruise passengers, including a pregnant woman and an elderly man with a heart condition, were stranded on an African island without money and vital medications after the vessel left port without them.
  • A spokesperson for the cruise line claimed the passengers were left on the island “on their own or with a private tour” and missed the “all-aboard time” by over an hour, according to the company.
  • Americans Jill Campbell and her husband, Jay Campbell, said they are unsure whether they even want to resume the 20-day voyage after Norwegian Cruise Lines forgot about its “basic duty of care.”
  • The eight passengers raced through seven different countries over a span of 48 hours to make it to Senegal, where the ship docked Tuesday morning,
  • Doug and Violeta Sanders, a stranded Australian couple, have spoken out about their ordeal , saying it was “the worst experience of our lives.”
  • Julie Lenkoff, 80,  suffered a stroke during an excursion on the cruise — and was left “alone” and “helpless” to find her way back to the US, according to her family.
  • COLUMN: Cruise ship was right to ditch the late passengers in Africa

Check out The Post’s tips on what to do if you’re left stranded like the Norwegian Cruise passengers

That doesn’t even scratch the surface of a cruise ship’s operations. Norwegian Dawn can accommodate 3,372 people — 2,340 passengers and 1,032 crew — and this group of eight expected it to wait?

A ship’s departure time isn’t exactly a mystery.

I sailed on Norwegian Dawn in February and the departure time was published in NCL’s Freestyle Daily newsletter the night before and announced over the loudspeaker multiple times in the morning.

It was also posted on signs at the doors where guests disembark.

The golden rule is clear: Make sure you’re back on time, or the ship may sail without you.

So what do you do if you’re left behind? Generally there are two options: Either catch up with the ship at a later port or head home.

If you’re lucky, you’ll have brought your essentials with you — your passport, phone, credit card and medication — because all of your belongings will stay on board until the end.

Please don’t get me wrong, of course I’m sympathetic to the distress of those who were left in a foreign country without the safety of the ship.

It would be scary and stressful to figure out next steps, especially for the members of the group with higher needs, and disappointing to miss out on their vacation.

However, the unfortunate reality is that ships can’t always wait.

Private tours are a whole separate issue, because while the ship will wait for official tours — those which have been organized by the cruise ship operator — to return, all bets are off for passengers taking their shore excursions into their own hands.

Unofficial tours can be slightly cheaper than those on the ship’s itinerary, with slightly more availability, so they can be attractive. However, while operators will do their best to stick to scheduled times, all bets are off once you board that bus and leave the port.

Think of it like booking multiple legs of a trip with different airlines. They’re not in the same network, they don’t owe each other anything, and they can’t guarantee that you’ll make your connection. Say the bus breaks down. Maybe someone wanders off and takes ages to return.

Perhaps the group lingers over a delicious lunch. Someone might need to stop at an ATM or a bathroom. You could get stuck in traffic. Or maybe your tour will be like mine and you’ll see something incredible that simply makes you want to pause.

And so, eight passengers were left in São Tomé and Príncipe , Africa’s second-smallest country.

“While this is a very unfortunate situation, guests are responsible for ensuring they return to the ship at the published time,” NCL said in a statement, adding that it is communicating with the guests about their next steps. It’s harsh but fair, especially since the other 3,364 (or so) people on board got it right.

Kirrily Schwarz recently sailed on Norwegian Dawn as a guest of Norwegian Cruise Line.

Twenty-five years after Waverley Park's last AFL game, political football moves to Tasmania stadium

When the final siren sounded in the Round 22 clash between Hawthorn and Sydney in August 1999, fans from all corners of the ground stormed the field.

Not because Tony "Plugger" Lockett had broken another goal-kicking record, or because Dermott Brereton had flattened someone in an all-in brawl.

But because it was their last chance to do so.

The grand old Waverley Park stadium, once destined to become one of the world's largest sporting arenas, emptied its multi-coloured timber stands for the last time as people flocked to the sodden, muddy turf.

The Hawks prevailed by 85 points that afternoon in front of a sell-out crowd of 72,130.

hawthorn celebrate win waverley getty

Plugger kicked four for the losing side, and the ice-cold benches of "Arctic Park" in Melbourne's outer-east would never see an official AFL match again.

This year marks a quarter of a century since that final siren, but in many ways the lessons of yesteryear remain at the fore in the sporting media landscape.

The AFL is yet again on a mission to build a brand new stadium, this time in Tasmania.

So has the league learned its lesson from the demise of the much lauded "VFL Park"?

Dermott Brereton and Bill Duckworth tussle

Born on a dream

Waverley Park holds many records: among them, it was the first venue to be designed and built specifically for Australian Rules football.

Original plans were for a stadium with a capacity of about 160,000 — which would have made it the second largest in the world.

The master plan was audacious, featuring a motel, indoor sporting grounds, a helipad, and even a lake.

50194638042_8a9a2cd874_k

However the dream was never quite realised.

Stadium capacity stalled at just over 100,000 — 72,000 seats plus standing room, amid an ongoing kerfuffle between the VFL (as the AFL was known before 1990), the state government and the Melbourne Cricket Club.

For all its ignominies, Waverley Park brought its fair share of innovation to the league.

It hosted the VFL's first elimination final in 1972, the first interstate clash, the first Sunday match, and the  league's first night match — even if the bounce of the ball was delayed by nearly an hour due to a busted fuse.

It hosted World Series Cricket, concerts from the likes of David Bowie and U2, even a Grand Final — the first away from the MCG and the only one featuring a baby blue batmobile.

But despite this, Waverley Park quickly turned hero to whipping boy.

The complaints were endless: it was too cold; the seats too hard; the surface too muddy; the sepia-toned scoreboard — though revolutionary when installed — too dated.

fans throwing dirt final waverley park match getty

And the less said about the car park, the better.

A mooted train line to the stadium never eventuated, resulting in a migraine-inducing bottleneck from the car park to the freeway after each game.

"The ground is well known for its perceived shortcomings, reflecting the controversies and negative opinions which ultimately prevented the extraordinary stadium design and the wider master-plan being completed," reads the ground's Statement of Significance on the National Trust Database .

Protestors at the last AFL game played at Waverley Park

Urban legend has it that some spectators are still stuck in their cars, searching for a way out.

The cost and controversy

In December 2001, the AFL sold the ground and surrounds to developers Mirvac for a reported $110 million.

Waverley Park's replacement, Docklands Stadium, was completed at a cost of $460 million.

Steve Bracks wearing a hard hat kicks a football on Waverley Park.

Having secured outright ownership of Docklands in 2016, the AFL set its sights on its next stadium — this time off the mainland, for  the league's latest addition, the Tasmania Devils .

But rather than being a boon for footy fans, the proposed stadium has become a political football.

The AFL is steadfast that the stadium will be built as promised, despite concerns about the appropriateness of the spend, location and even the need for a new stadium.

A generic image of a full house of patrons behind the goals at Waverley Park

Monash University Department of Economics associate professor, Lionel Frost, said the AFL should learn its lesson from past failings at Waverley.

"The lessons learned [from Waverley Park] are the cost of building stadiums are so high that unless they're used efficiently it imposes a really heavy burden, economically," he said.

Frost has crunched the numbers behind such league-owned stadiums as Waverley Park and Adelaide's Football Park.

He found that while they certainly brought more fans through the gates, the stadiums were not used to their full potential.

"Because it [Waverley Park] was owned by the league, the economic burden was on the VFL and its clubs at a time when a lot of them were in a lot of financial difficulty," Frost said.

"The Tasmanian stadium's one that would be owned by the people of Tasmania, so I think it's imperative that we get this right and that we make sure there's an asset created that will increase economic activity, that will increase community engagement, and in doing so ... create lasting benefits."

What's next for Waverley?

The Hawthorn Football Club's residency at Waverley Park is set to end in the coming years.

The club spent up big on a huge plot of land in Dingley Village, about 20 minutes south-west of their current home, in 2016, with work underway on an expansive new training centre.

Hawthorn Footballers run laps on the Waverley Park oval with the stand in the background

It's expected the build will be completed by the end of next year, however a move-in date remains to be confirmed.

As for what happens when the Hawks fly the nest? That too is unclear.

Monash Mayor Nicky Luo said the council wants to see the oval remain open to the public.

While Hawthorn Football Club chief executive, Ash Klein, said the club was continuing to assess how it will "optimise" the future use of the stadium following the club's departure.

Meanhwile, the remnants of the stand and its VFL mural are provided some protection by Victorian Heritage Listing.

San Clemente’s Cole Houshmand earns first World Tour win in battle against friend

I t was a San Clemente showdown, a final match up that would pit long-time friends – but rivals in the water – against each other for the prestigious Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach title.

World Tour veteran Griffin Colapinto matched up against fellow San Clemente surfer Cole Houshmand  at the event in Australia – and in the end, it was the rookie who earned the victory, marking his first-ever World Tour win.

“I’m speechless. This is unreal. I honestly don’t think this will sink in for a while,” said a smiling Houshmand in a live interview with World Surf League officials.  “There’s no one I really want to beat more, and no one I’d rather lose to. It was a weird mindset … It worked out in my favor. This is probably the best day of my life.”

And if that wasn’t enough to show that California surfers are making their mark amongst the world’s best , Oceanside’s Caitlin Simmers won the women’s event, a nail-biting victory she earned with just seconds on the clock against France’s Johanne Defay.

“There was a lot of stuff going through my brain,” said Simmers, who has been a force since she joined the tour last year, cracking the Top 5 last year and winning the Pipeline Pro earlier this year . “I was just thinking, on my last wave, this could be it. I was almost too late for it. I feel like in this sport, you have to believe in yourself because that stuff happens.”

Both Houshmand and Colapinto dominated against the world’s best throughout the event, and it was also a great finish for fellow San Clemente surfer Kade Matson, who made it to the quarterfinals.

It was a much-needed result for Houshmand, who was under threat of being knocked off the World Tour at the looming mid-year cut, which slashes the field of surfers in half, given his mediocre results during the first half of the season.  His win on Monday secures his spot on tour for the rest of the year.

It was just minutes into the first heat that Houshmand showed he was hungry for big scores, hacking down the line and executing several huge turns for a 7-point score.

Houshmand maintained the lead until about halfway into the heat, when Colapinto took to the air for a 6.93, backed up by a mid-range 5.83.

But Colapinto wouldn’t stay at the top spot for long, Houshmand earning a second score of 6.50 to overtake the lead. An exchange at the final moments of the heat had the surfers, and the fans, holding their breath in anticipation.

When Colapinto’s score came in just shy of the needed result, Houshmand tossed his board into the air, his long-time friend embracing him. Colapinto joined his younger brother Crosby Colapinto in raising Houshmand, who waved the American flag with pride, on their shoulders, a huge sign of comradery and sportsmanship.

Houshmand reflected on a surf session he and Colapinto shared while warming up that morning, the duo sitting in the water not knowing how the day would unfold.

“We were just saying, this is what it’s all about,” he said. “This is what we dreamed of as kids.”

The Rip Curl Pro Bells Beach  was the fourth stop of 10 on the World Tour, with the top five male and female surfers aiming to make the finals to battle at Lower Trestles in September.

The competitors now head to Western Australia for the Margaret River Pro, which has a waiting period of April 11-21.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
