Vacations are a lot more enjoyable when you don’t have to worry about going over your budget. However, it takes time to scour the internet for offers. If you’re an AARP member, though, you have plenty of travel deals included in your membership.
Formerly known as the American Association of Retired Persons, AARP memberships are open to anyone age 50 or older . Memberships cost $16 per year and come with a host of benefits such as a subscription to AARP: The Magazine, AARP Rewards and, of course, deals on dining, travel and more.
There are so many details to consider when planning a trip , which means there are also plenty of opportunities to score some savings.

This $12 annual membership can save you hundreds on flights and hotels
You might say I'm an old soul.
I've been this way for as long as I can remember. I've never longed for a wild night out — instead, I'd much rather stay in and sit on my couch, catching up on my never-ending Netflix queue. I'll take a night of watching movies with my grandparents (hi, Gram and Jerry!) over a bar or club any day.
And now, my new American Association of Retired Persons (AARP) membership is really just the icing on the cake — and it's not just because it solidifies my status as an aspiring retiree. As an AARP member , I have access to pretty significant travel savings. And no, you don't need to be over 50 years old to get it. Let me explain.
For just $12, if you enroll in automatic renewal (or $9 per year when you commit to a five-year term with the Labor Day special ), you can get an AARP membership that comes with a host of great travel benefits. And travelers of all ages and employment can sign up, so there's really no reason not to have this on your radar.
For more TPG news delivered each morning to your inbox, sign up for our daily newsletter .
Travel benefits
If I need to rent a car when I travel, I'll have access to savings from Avis, Budget and Zipcar, just to name a few. With Avis and Budget, for example, I can save a whopping 30% off base rates and get upgrades on certain vehicle types, as well as an additional driver at no cost.
If I'm considering a cruise in the future, I can choose from the AARP Travel Center Powered by Expedia , Collette River Cruises or Grand European Travel . With Grand European Travel, for example, I can save $100 per person on over 30 different itineraries. The operator sets sail to popular destinations such as Italy, France, Greece, Spain, Morocco and Egypt.
Where the program really shines, however, is with its hotel benefits. There are over 60 participating hotel brands, including a few of Hilton's luxury brands (Waldorf Astoria, Conrad and Curio Collection), that confer discounts and even elite-like benefits to AARP members. At Conrad and Waldorf Astoria hotels, I can take advantage of a 10% discount off the best available rate and a 2 p.m. late checkout, when available.
If anything, this means I have a really good excuse to go back to one of my favorite hotels in the world: the Conrad Tokyo . Room rates usually go for around $545 a night, but with my 10% discount, I can pay $490.50 per night ... and put that $55 in savings toward sushi, ramen and udon .
I can also utilize this benefit at budget properties such as Homewood Suites, Embassy Suites and Wyndham. You'll have to book your stay directly with the hotel, but for a Hilton Diamond member like me, getting 10% off plus elite benefits is a major win in my book.
For Marriott and Hyatt loyalists, the program does fall flat. Neither brand has properties that participate in the program. Instead, the bulk of the AARP collection comprises hotels from Hilton, Choice, Wyndham and Radisson, among other lesser-known brands.
One of the most prominent AARP benefits is the ability to save up to $200 per year on round-trip, trans-Atlantic British Airways flights. Travelers can save $65 on World Traveller and World Traveller Plus fares, and as much as $200 when flying business class.
While British Airways might be the buzziest of the bunch, there are a handful of other airline and vacation package perks that could be a better fit for your travel plans. Tour company Collette, for example, offers $50 to $100 off select tours of seven days or more — and that includes everything from river cruises and rail itineraries to traditional land tours.
Just keep in mind that these benefits and partners can change. Xanterra Travel Collection — manages lodges in some of the most popular U.S. national parks — is no longer participating.

Other perks
Though we're obviously here for the fun travel deals and discounts, an AARP membership comes with many other benefits. You can save 20% on a Medjet membership; get 10% discounts at major restaurant chains including Carrabba's Italian Grill, Outback Steakhouse and Bonefish Grill; and even save money on cellphone plans, home security plans and Audible memberships.
If you're under 50, just keep in mind that you'll have an "associate" membership, not the full AARP membership . That means you won't get access to age-restricted insurance products or other benefits limited by the vendors.
You don't need to be a mathematician to know that it doesn't take much for the membership to pay for itself. For just $1 month, I could save approximately $50 at my favorite hotel in the world, between $65 and $200 on flights to London and even earn 50 points for every dollar spent on Walgreens-branded health and wellness products, to say nothing of the discounts on car rentals and restaurants.
Depending on your travel style, interests and budget, you can easily maximize an AARP membership. Just one trip could make the membership worthwhile for years.

Four years ago, the world as we once knew it changed.
Streets emptied, hospitals filled and social distancing became the norm.
Today, older adults still overwhelmingly bear the brunt of COVID-19.
By Rachel Nania , AARP
For many, life changed in an instant on March 11, 2020. After more than 118,000 cases in more than 100 countries and 4,291 deaths, the World Health Organization declared the coronavirus a pandemic.
Cruise ships stopped sailing, schools shuttered, sports teams canceled their seasons and families quarantined.
“The world came to a standstill,” says Preeti Malani, M.D., a professor of medicine in the Division of Infectious Diseases at Michigan Medicine. “And people went months and months without seeing their loved ones.”
Though much has changed since the early days of 2020, the pandemic’s toll is still felt — overwhelmingly by older Americans.
COVID’s disproportionate burden
More than 1,184,376 deaths from COVID-19 have been reported in the United States.
About 94 percent of these deaths have occurred in adults 50 and older.
“The numbers truly are staggering,” says Gregory Poland, M.D., an infectious diseases expert and head of Mayo Clinic’s Vaccine Research Group.
Although the number of people dying from COVID-19 has declined significantly from the early days of the pandemic, thanks in large part to greater immunity and better treatments, death rates for adults 75 and older continue to tower over rates for younger groups.
“One thing that has been a challenge in this pandemic is recognizing that each of those numbers is a human being,” says Jennifer Nuzzo, professor of epidemiology and director of the Pandemic Center at Brown University School of Public Health. “A human who has lost his or her life and whose family no longer has them here on this Earth.”
Similarly, older adults continue to bear the burden of severe illness from a coronavirus infection.
Hospitalizations are highest among the 65-plus
As of the end of 2023, there were more than 6.6 million COVID-19 hospitalizations.
About 70 percent of them were among people 65 and older; 14 percent were among adults 50–64, according to federal data.
In nursing homes, more than 2 million cases of COVID have been confirmed since the start of the pandemic, and nearly 200,000 residents have died from the virus, AARP research shows.
“It has been clear throughout this pandemic that the single biggest risk factor for experiencing severe illness and death has been age,” Nuzzo says.
There are other lingering effects from the pandemic, Michigan Medicine's Malani says. More than half (56 percent) of adults ages 50–80 reported feeling lonely and isolated in 2020, a National Poll on Healthy Aging shows. That percentage has not returned to pre-pandemic levels.
“Social isolation has profoundly negative effects, particularly if you’re older,” Poland says. It’s been linked to increased risk for several health conditions, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, including heart disease, dementia and earlier death.
Much has changed from four years ago. Restrictions have been repealed, and precautions have loosened. But the virus is still with us, and health experts say older adults and others at high risk for severe outcomes must remain vigilant.
“There’s still a disproportionate burden [of deaths], and it’s highly concentrated in our older adults,” says Keri Althoff, an associate professor of epidemiology at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Vaccines and treatments are largely the reason we’re in a better place today, Nuzzo says. “But those tools are only going to help us stay in that better place if we use them.”
Health officials recently recommended that adults 65 and older get another dose of the latest COVID vaccine to ramp up their immunity to the virus that puts more than 13,000 people in hospitals weekly. About 40 percent of adults age 65-plus received a shot in the fall, federal data shows; it’s unclear how many have received one this year, since the new recommendation.
Research suggests uptake is also low when it comes to COVID treatments. A study published this year found that only 12 percent of more than 300,000 patients with COVID-19 who were eligible for the antiviral treatment Paxlovid received it.
“The vast majority of hospitalizations and deaths are preventable,” Nuzzo says. “And the fact that they’re still occurring and the numbers are what they are is because not enough people are using the tools to prevent them.”
Althoff says the pandemic taught us how everyday preventive measures — such as masking and improving indoor air quality — can help protect us not just from COVID but also from other respiratory illnesses that disproportionately affect older adults, namely influenza and RSV.
“I think it’s a moment to say that [in the past four years] there was a lot of loss, there was a lot of trauma, and for those who are still with us and surviving and thriving, continued vigilance of respiratory illness in older ages is really important,” Althoff says.
Rachel Nania is an award-winning health editor and writer at AARP.org, who covers a range of topics including diseases and treatments.

Missouri State Tax Guide: What You’ll Pay in 2024
By sharon waters , march 18, 2024 03:23 pm.
Missouri retirees pay state tax on pensions and Social Security for tax year 2023, but they also can take some exemptions. Missourians saw their top state income tax rate dip slightly in 2023, and it declined again as of Jan. 1, 2024. But Missouri’s sales tax is higher compared to other states, and even groceries are taxed.
The big picture:
- Income tax: 2.00 to 4.95 percent
- Missouri has a graduated individual income tax, with rates ranging from 2 percent to 4.95 percent. Some municipalities, including St. Louis and Kansas City, also collect local income tax.
- Property tax: 1.01 percent of a home’s assessed value (average) Real estate taxes vary in Missouri, with an average tax rate of 1.01 percent of a home’s assessed value in 2021, according to the Tax Foundation.
- Sales tax: 8.38 percent (average combined state and local) Missouri has a 4.225 percent state sales and use tax, but cities and counties may impose a local sales tax. The average combined state and local sales tax rate is 8.38 percent, according to the Tax Foundation .
How is income taxed in Missouri?
Missouri’s individual income tax rates range from 2 percent to 4.95 percent for tax year 2023. If you live or work in St. Louis or Kansas City, you’ll also pay a 1 percent local income tax. The state’s eight tax brackets are below. Rates are the same for joint and single filers. Not all of your income is taxed at the same rate. For example, if you’re a single filer and earned $80,000 in taxable income, the first $1,207 is not taxed. The next $1,207 to $2,414 is taxed at 2 percent, the next $2,414 to $3,621 is taxed at 2.5 percent and so on.
Source: Missouri Department of Revenue Missouri provides a calculator to compute your individual income tax. Watch the video below to learn how to identify your 2023 federal income tax brackets.
Are pensions or retirement income taxed in Missouri?
Missouri partially taxes pensions and other retirement income. For tax year 2023, public pensions are exempt from state tax for those who meet income requirements ($85,000 for a single person or $100,000 for a married couple filing jointly). The total exemption cannot be more than $44,683 per taxpayer. Those with private pensions (including annuities, IRAs and 401(k)s funded by a private source) who meet income requirements can take an exemption of up to $6,000 per taxpayer. To claim the exemption, your income cannot exceed $25,000 for a single person, $32,000 for a married couple filing jointly, or $16,000 for a married person filing separately. Find more information about how pensions are taxed on the Missouri Department of Revenue website . Military pensions are not taxed. Scroll down for more information about military benefits. AARP's retirement calculator can help you determine if you are saving enough to retire when — and how — you want.
What about investment income?
Investment income is taxed at the same rate as other income. If the income is included in your adjustable gross income on your federal return, it will be taxable on your state return.
Does Missouri tax Social Security benefits?
Yes, for tax year 2023. But benefits are fully deductible for Missourians 62 and older with an adjusted gross income of less than $85,000 (or $100,000 for a married couple filing jointly). If your income exceeds those limits, you may qualify for a partial deduction . As of Jan. 1, 2024, Social Security benefits are exempt from state tax, under a law passed in 2023 . The change will impact taxes filed in 2025. Also, you may pay federal taxes on a portion of your Social Security benefits , depending on your income. Up to 50 percent of your benefits will be taxed if you file an individual tax return and make between $25,000 and $34,000 in total income — or if you file jointly and as a household make $32,000 to $44,000 in total income. And up to 85 percent of your benefits will be taxed by the federal government if your total income is more than $34,000 individually or $44,000 as a couple. AARP's Social Security calculator can assist you in determining when to claim and how to maximize your Social Security benefits.
How is property taxed in Missouri?
Property tax is a local tax based on the value of your home, which is assessed by the county. In Missouri, your home is assessed at 19 percent of its market value. The average property tax rate in 2021 was 1.01 percent of the assessed value of your home, according to Tax Foundation data, although rates vary by county. Your tax bill is calculated using a formula that takes into account your home’s assessed value and your county’s tax rate. County assessors reassess property every two years, in odd-numbered years. Missouri property taxes are paid annually and are due by Dec. 31. Personal property such as cars, boats, trailers and aircraft is also taxed in Missouri. Most personal property is assessed at 33⅓ percent of its value. The Missouri State Tax Commission has more information about property taxes , including how to file an appeal . To estimate your taxes, use Missouri’s property tax estimator .
What about sales tax and other taxes?
- Sales and use tax: Missouri levies a 4.225 percent state sales and use tax on many, but not all , goods and services. Cities, counties and special taxing districts such as fire districts may impose an additional local sales and use tax. You can view your sales tax rate by entering your address here . A similar look-up tool, in the form of a map, is available here . Eyeglasses and contact lenses are taxable, but prescription drugs, insulin, dentures, prosthetic devices, durable medical equipment and hearing aids are exempt.
- Groceries: Missouri is one of just 13 states that tax groceries. Food is taxed at 1.225 percent, but local taxes may also apply.
- Gas and diesel: The motor fuel tax is 24.5 cents but will increase to 27 cents on July 1. The tax is paid by the supplier but passed on to the consumer at the pump in place of sales tax.
- Alcohol: Liquor is taxed at $2.00 per gallon; wine at 42 cents per gallon; beer at 6 cents per gallon. Alcohol is also subject to sales tax.
- Lottery prizes : Missouri taxes lottery winnings. The Missouri Lottery withholds 4 percent Missouri state tax on prizes of $600.01 or more, and 24 percent federal tax for winnings more than $5,000. Winners may owe additional taxes or receive a refund, based on their personal income.
Will I or my heirs have to pay inheritance and estate tax in Missouri?
Missouri does not levy an estate tax, nor does it have an inheritance tax.
Are there any tax breaks for older Missouri residents?
Missouri offers a property tax credit for certain seniors and individuals who are 100 percent disabled. The credit is based on the amount of property tax paid and total household income, with the credit maxing out at $750 for renters and $1,100 for homeowners. The maximum household income to qualify depends on your tax filing status and if you rent or own. The Missouri Department of Revenue has more information. Military veterans who are former prisoners of war with a 100 percent service-connected disability are exempt from Missouri property tax.
Are military benefits taxed in Missouri?
Missouri does not tax military pensions, and active duty members can deduct military income from their Missouri adjusted gross income.
What is the deadline for filing Missouri taxes in 2024?
The deadline for filing a Missouri state tax return is April 15. If you receive a six-month extension to file your federal taxes (until Oct. 15), you’ll automatically be granted an extension to file your Missouri taxes. An extension does not extend the time to pay. Any taxes owed must be paid by the original due date. For help estimating your annual income taxes, use AARP's Tax Calculator. Find more information about filing your state taxes on the Missouri Department of Revenue website . Sharon Waters, a former CPA, has written for Wired.com and other publications.
