Day 2 Arrive in Germany

Arrive this morning in Berlin, where our representative will greet you and escort you to your bus. A driving tour of Berlin will introduce you to such sites as the Brandenburg Gate and the rebuilt Reichstag, whose transparent dome represents the open government of the nation. Pass the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche, left as a poignant reminder of what was lost in the Second World War and stop at a section of the Berlin Wall, a stark testimony to the once divided city. Take a photo at Checkpoint Charlie, the infamous crossing point from East to West Berlin during the Cold War Era. Dinner and overnight in Wittenberg.

Day 3 Wittenberg

This morning, wander the town of Wittenberg, where Luther lived and taught for 36 years. See where he posted his 95 Theses on the Palace Church door, giving voice to the Reformation. Visit Schlosskirche, where Luther was buried, and explore Luther Halle, a former monastery where Martin lived with his family. This afternoon, explore on your own through the town's museums and shops. Enjoy an English Service held by the local Luther English Ministry team before returning to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 Halle and Eisleben

Start the day in Halle, where Luther supported the Market Church constructed here. Later, George Handel would be baptized here in 1685. Cardinal Albert of Mainz precipitated the onset of the Reformation through his sale of indulgences and the Protestants in Halle bought him out of his position. Continue on to Eisleben, where Luther‘s life both began and ended. Luther was baptized at St. Petri (St. Peter & St. Paul’s Church), where you can see portraits of his wife and parents. This charming little town includes the Luther Family Home, as well as the house Luther was visiting at the time of his death. Walk the medieval cobblestone streets past St. Andrew’s Church, where Luther preached his last sermon. Dinner and overnight in Erfurt.

Day 5 Erfurt

Erfurt was called the “city of spires” in Luther’s day. Visit St. Mary’s Cathedral and the Augustinian Monastery, where Luther was ordained into the priesthood in 1507. Visit the Veste, the 900-year-old fortress of Coburg, where Luther took refuge from his enemies behind its triple ramparts. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 6 Eisenach

Martin Luther lived in Eisenach during his student days. Learn about Luther’s life and the Reformation at the Luther House Museum, and tour the famous Wartburg Castle, where Luther translated the New Testament into German in 1522. View the room where Luther completed his translation in just 11 weeks. Travel to the Rhine River area. Check into your area hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 7 Worms and Heidelberg

Explore the ancient city of Worms, where Luther refused to back down from his criticism of the church during the famous Diet of Worms. The Reformation Monument features statues of major figures in the Reformation. In Heidelberg, view the Castle that was twice struck by lightning, and explore the charming Old Town’s cobblestone lanes and medieval atmosphere. Heidelberg University played an important role in the debates over the Reformation. Continue to Mainz for dinner and overnight.

Day 8 Mainz, Gutenberg Press, Rhine Cruise

This morning, visit the Rhine River city of Mainz, where Johann Gutenberg developed the process of moveable type that allowed printing to be done on a production scale. Enjoy a cruise on the Rhine River past medieval castles before staying overnight in the Frankfurt area. Return to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 9 Return to the USA

Return home with memories of the people and places of the Reformation in Germany.

reformation tour in germany

This trip consists of light walking, potentially 1-3 miles per day at most. Most of your time will be spent on the bus, at museums or other sites with frequent stops, or places with similar accommodations. Occasionally there will be uneven paths, however most sites will be wheelchair accessible.

reformation tour in germany

This trip is our most popular and standardized for our most common programs. On average you’ll be walking 3-5 miles per day, with a handful of sites having uneven pathways. Some sites may be wheelchair accessible, however some will not. Some sites may be inaccessible due to stairs or rugged terrain. There will be frequent stops throughout the day to rest and catch your breath.

Germany

Tour members depart on our flight to Frankfurt. After we board our flight for Europe, we will be served dinner according to the airline’s schedule.

Upon arrival in Frankfurt, we are welcomed by our tour escort who will accompany us throughout the whole tour. We board our coach and drive to the city of Mainz to get settled, relax, and enjoy some free time before our Welcome Dinner. Overnight in Mainz.

We start our day with a city tour of Mainz at St. Martin’s Cathedral, built in the 8th century, where seven kings’ coronations took place over the centuries. Then we will visit the Gutenberg Museum, the birthplace of printing, where two copies of the world-famous Gutenberg Bible are displayed in a special vault. We will also visit its legendary library. After lunch, we make our way to Worms. Martin Luther was summoned to Worms in 1521 by Emperor Karl V in order to justify his “heretical” conduct towards the Roman Catholic Church. A guided city tour shows us St. Peter’s Cathedral, one of three Imperial Cathedrals in Germany and one of the best examples of Romanesque architecture. This is the place where Luther made his “Here I Stand” declaration. We see the Church of the Holy Trinity, the oldest Jewish Cemetery in Europe, and the world’s largest Memorial to the Reformation. Dinner and overnight are in Worms.

Today we drive to Heidelberg, a gorgeous and charming town on the Neckar River. We take a leisure ride on the Heidelberg Railway up to Heidelberg Castle (where the Heidelberg Confession was written in 1653). We visit the castle and the Castle Church. Then we continue to the medieval town of Rothenburg ob der Tauber where we enjoy a walking tour inside the medieval walled city without a single modern building within. We see the Town Hall, the Glockenspiel, and explore St. Jakob’s Church which holds the famous altar carving by Tilman Riemenschneider. We stop at the Medieval Crime Museum (containing instruments of torture) and end our walking tour with a visit to Kathe Wohlfahrt’s Christmas Village for free time and shopping. We drive to Nuremberg for dinner and overnight.

We start our day with a city tour of Nuremberg. According to Luther, Nuremberg was “the eye and the ear of Germany” during the Reformation because there were 21 printing houses to publish news. Nuremberg’s printing presses played an integral part disseminating information in the Reformation, including mass-producing Luther’s 95 Theses. We take a walk through the Old Town including the churches St. Lorenz and St. Sebald. Enjoy some free time exploring this charming medieval city. Dinner and overnight are in Nuremburg.

Today we travel further north to Coburg to visit the famous Veste Coburg, the fortress where Luther took refuge and lived during the Augsburg Confession and one of the largest and best-preserved medieval castles in Germany. While visiting the castle, we’ll see the Luther Room, the art treasures in the various collections, and the royal building with the Luther Chapel. The inside is a museum of medieval military weaponry, Venetian glassware, china, and tapestries. Afterward, we visit the historic, picturesque city. Coburg is the quintessential German town with great food, drinks, and plenty to see and do. The vibrant “Marktplatz” is the center of the Old Town and a happy, bustling place. After lunch, we drive north to Erfurt, the spiritual training ground of Martin Luther. It was here that Luther obtained a degree in 1502 and where he took the decisive step to turn to theology and the monastic life. We explore the Augustinian Monastery, with a permanent exhibit depicting Luther’s life as a monk in Erfurt. Dinner and overnight are in Erfurt.

After breakfast, we enjoy a short drive to Weimer. Luther visited the city frequently between 1518 and 1540 where he gave counsel about implementing the Reformation. We tour the late Gothic Town Church St. Peter & Paul, built between 1498-1500, where Luther repeatedly preached. Now called the Herder Church, it holds the famous three-winged altar (1552-53) painted by Lucas Cranach the Elder as a major pictorial representation of the Lutheran doctrine. Then we tour The Duchess Anna Amalia Library, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of the most beautiful and historic libraries in all of Germany. It holds over one million volumes, including medieval manuscripts, pamphlets from the Reformation, and a collection of family registers and bibles (including the first complete edition of the Lutheran bible translation from 1534). Afterward, enjoy free time on your own for lunch, stroll through the park, visit Goethe’s home, or explore the charming Marktplatz before returning to Erfurt for dinner and overnight.

This morning, we make our way to Eisenach. We begin by visiting Wartburg Castle, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Here Luther found refuge during his exile and translated the New Testament from Greek into German. Here we will see the room where he lived and worked. Then we tour the city of Eisenach and admire all its beautiful sights, such as the Luther House and St. George’s Church, where Luther preached while “on the run” and later, in 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized. We visit the Bach House, the first and most comprehensive home museum of the composer. We tour the 17th-century home and attend a small concert of Bach pieces played on baroque keyboard instruments. After lunch, we make our way to Dresden for dinner and overnight.

After an early breakfast, we tour the wonderful Baroque city of Dresden. We begin with Germany’s largest Protestant church, the Frauenkirche, which has been fully restored following damage during WWII. J.S. Bach was the first to play on the Silberman organ when the church was originally built. Luther often preached in Dresden and a statue of the reformer stands in front of Frauenkirche in the city center. A nearly 400-foot-long mural, known as the Furstenzug, or Procession of Princes, on the outer wall of the Dresden castle stables reveals how the movers and shakers of the day reacted to the seismic shift brought about by the Reformation. We walk along the Bruehlsche Terrasse containing sweeping views of the Elbe River. Enjoy some free time for lunch, shopping and exploring Dresden on your own, then we make our way to Wittenberg. Dinner and overnight in Wittenberg.

After breakfast, we tour Lutherstadt Wittenberg, the picturesque town at the heart of the Reformation. When it comes to Luther, there is almost no city more important than this one. We begin at the Lutherhaus, where Martin Luther lived with Katherine Von Bora and their children, and where he held his infamous table talks. Then we visit the famous Castle Church where Luther posted the 95 Theses, which sparked the Protestant Reformation. Luther is also buried in the Castle Church. We walk through the historic center and tour the Town and Parish Church where Luther often preached and married Katherine. Afterward enjoy some free time to explore this historic, charming town. Dinner and overnight are in Wittenberg.

After breakfast, we explore Berlin, the capital of the reunified Germany, on a guided tour that includes the Reichstag (Parliament) and its cupola, the Nikolai Quarter, the impressive boulevard “Unter den Linden”, the Gendarmen-Market, and the Brandenburg Gate. Time permitting, we will attend a short Noon prayer service at the Berliner Dom (Berlin Cathedral) and hear its stunning organ. We will see firsthand how World War II divided Berlin, visit Check-Point Charlie and the remaining pieces of the Berlin Wall, and walk through the holocaust Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe. In the evening, the group will come together for our Farewell Dinner. Overnight is in Berlin.

We transfer to Berlin Airport for our departure back to the U.S.A. and arrive home today with a greater understanding of Martin Luther and the early Christian Church, and full of wonderful memories of the incredible once-in-a lifetime tour to Germany.

Day 5: Heidelberg, Worms, Mainz

reformation tour in germany

This morning we travel to one of the most charming cities in all of the world - Heidelberg, ancient capital of the Palatinate and home of Germany's oldest university. But most importantly, it was a stronghold of German Reformed Protestants beginning in 1560. One of the great confessional statements of the Reformation, the Heidelberg Catechism was produced here in 1563. We tour Heidelberg Castle, a most impressive historic landmark of Germany that stands majestically overlooking the Neckar River. The structure, now largely in ruins, preserves numerous examples of Medieval, Renaissance, and Baroque German architecture. Our next stop is in Worms. It was here, during the Imperial Diet in 1521, that Martin Luther challenged the entire Roman Catholic establishment by his refusal to recant the great doctrines of Protestantism. It was also here that William Tyndale completed the printing of his English version of the New Testament in 1525 which he had begun in Cologne. After seeing St. Peter's Church and the symbolic Luther memorial near the town square, we transfer to Mainz. In Mainz we view the Gutenberg Monument and then visit the Gutenberg Museum to learn about printing from the moveable metal type and see a Gutenberg Bible. We overnight in Frankfurt.

Day 6: Eisenach & Wartburg Castle

reformation tour in germany

This morning we depart Mainz and drive to Eisenach, the birthplace of Johann Sebastian Bach and the childhood home of Martin Luther. Luther recognized that his failure to recant at the Diet of Worms (April, 1521) had put him in very serious danger. For this reason, after his defiant confession of faith before the emperor, he was rushed away back to Wittenberg by coach. On the way back, he was overtaken by a group of Frederick the Wise’s guards disguised as highwaymen. They escorted the Reformer back to Wartburg Castle where he would remain for the next ten months. Wartburg Castle was a hunting castle that belonged to the ducal family of Saxony. To the present day, it lies in the Thuringian forest in north-central Germany. It was here at the formidable Wartburg Castle that Luther, under "house arrest", translated the New Testament into the German language in 1523. We visit the castle and see where Luther spent his time. We end out day in Erfurt where we enjoy our dinner and overnight.

Day 7: Erfurt, Eisleben

reformation tour in germany

This morning we spend time in Erfurt where Luther attended the university. A highlight will be the Augustinian Monastery where he spent his early years as a monk. Leaving Erfurt we visit Eisleben which is noted among the most significant in Luther's history; he was born here in 1483 and died here in 1546 and old manuscripts indicate that he felt a special affinity to Eisleben. We will see the house of his birth and death, St. Andrews Church where he preached his last sermon, the Luther Monument, and St. Anne's Church with the famous Biblical scenes hewn in stone and many other sites. We continue to Wittenberg for dinner and overnight.

Day 8: Wittenberg, Berlin

reformation tour in germany

We continue the Reformation Trail today with a visit to Wittenberg where Martin Luther lived and taught for 36 years. You will see the Castle Church door where Luther posted his 95 Theses, giving birth to the Reformation and the Town Church where he preached. We see the Luther House which is the greatest museum of Reformation History in the world. This afternoon we transfer to Berlin for a short tour of the Berlin Wall, Brandenburg Gate, and Checkpoint Charlie. Overnight in Berlin.

Day 9: Departure

We transfer to the airport for our flight home.

reformation tour in germany

Protestant Itineraries »

Germany », a reformation tour of germany- 12 days/ 10 nights.

Martin Luther, upon being asked if he stood by the contents of his books and writings, said, I am bound by the Scriptures I have quoted and my conscience is captive to the Word of God. I cannot and will not recant anything, since it is neither safe nor right to go against conscience. May God help me. Amen. As we experience the wonder and thrill of a Reformation Tour through Germany, we will not only glory in the splendor of beautiful, captivating surroundings, but we will also gain insight and a greater appreciation for the courage and convictions of Martin Luther and others who participated in the Reformation. Perhaps we will even come away with a desire to live our own lives more courageously and purposefully.

What to Expect

This unforgettable GTI Signature Tour will journey to the heart of the Reformation – Germany! Trace the life, ministry, and theology of Martin Luther and other Reformers whom God used to reignite the evangelical movement. Explore historical sites in Wittenberg, Coburg, and Nuremburg, among others. See the many sides of Germany: medieval streets, pastoral countryside, outdoor cafes, ancient structures and modern cities like Berlin and Munich. Experience not only German culture and cuisine, but the history of theology and the defense of the Gospel!

The uniqueness of this trip includes being in Europe vs. the Middle East, walking instead of hiking, singing hymns along the way, discussing WWII and figures like Dietrich Bonhoeffer, as well as visiting stunning spectacles like the Neuschwanstein castle in the Bavarian Alps. It will be as though we are walking along the timeline of church history, even standing in front of the door where legend says Luther nailed his 95 Theses.

The Reformation is truly relevant to the whole Evangelical Church, regardless of your denomination or church style. Studying scripture and the principles of “faith alone, scripture alone, and Christ alone” helps remember God’s mighty power to save. Listen to the special podcast episode as Rich Ferreira and trip leader Rich Liverance walk through this exciting itinerary. Space is limited so register now!

Arrival in Berlin, Germany

Arrive in Berlin and transfer to hotel on your own. If you would like help GTI can assist with options. Enjoy a free day once you arrive to rest, relax or explore the city. A group dinner and orientation will happen in the evening. Overnight in Berlin.

Berlin / Wittenberg

Today, you meet your tour escort and embark on your journey. Go on a sightseeing tour of all the highlights Berlin has to offer. Visit the grand Brandenburg Gate, a symbol of union and peace, as well as the magnificent “Reichstag”, where most important decisions are being made by the German government. If available, explore this politically essential building with a guide and take a walk around the spacious glass-dome, enjoying a fantastic view of the city. Stroll down the lovely boulevard “Unter den Linden” and visit the picturesque Museum Island, which marks Berlin’s historical center. Located here is one of the capital’s most famous buildings, the Berlin cathedral. The vivid church life of the cathedral’s congregation and in the twin city Berlin-Cölln demonstrate this perfectly. Today’s final stop is the city’s most beautiful plaza, the Gendarmenmarkt, gorgeously framed by the German and French cathedrals. In the afternoon, you leave Berlin and depart for Wittenberg. Dinner and overnight in Wittenberg.

Wittenberg / Eisleben

This morning, you start exploring Lutherstadt Wittenberg. When it comes to Luther, there is almost no city more important than this one. The legend of the 95 theses nailed to the door of the Castle Church, though not quite accurate, still gets told across the world. Visit this famous door, as well as the Luther House, the town hall, the historic center and the Town and Parish Church St. Marien, the oldest building in Wittenberg. Then, you proceed to Eisleben, where Luther was born and died. Discover the houses, where he took his first and his last breaths. During a tour of Eisleben’s town center you see the Church of St. Peter and Paul, St. Andrew’s Church and the Old Town with its charming historical houses. In the late afternoon, you drive to Erfurt for dinner and overnight.

Erfurt, Eisenach

Start the day with exploring the historic center of Erfurt on a guided walking tour. Marvel at the Merchants' Bridge - the longest continuous bridge with inhabited buildings in Europe -, the Luther Memorial, the Town Hall and the Merchant’s Church. Explore the Fish Market, St. Mary’s Cathedral and the ‘Anger’, the city’s central square. It was here, in this beautiful city, that Luther decided to become a monk. Visit the Augustinian Monastery, a place that shaped and taught the young Reformer for six years. Take a glimpse at the small “cell”, where Luther lived during his stay in the monastery. Then leave Erfurt behind and travel to Eisenach. This afternoon you have the chance to visit the UNESCO World Heritage site Wartburg Castle. Here Luther found refuge during his exile and translated the New Testament from Greek into German. Take a look at the spartan room he lived and worked in. Transfer to the hotel for dinner and overnight in Eisenach.

Eisenach, Coburg

Today stroll the city of Eisenach and admire all its beautiful sights, such as the Luther House and St. Georg’s Church, where Luther preached while “on the run” and later, in 1685, Johann Sebastian Bach was baptized. Afterwards continue to Coburg. The Veste Coburg is one of the largest and most well-preserved medieval castle complexes in Germany. In 1530 Luther took refuge and lived here for six months. After exploring the fortress take a walk through the charming historical city. Dinner and overnight in Coburg.

Nuremberg, Augsburg

Driving south you reach the city of Nuremberg. According to Luther, Nuremberg was “the eye and ear of Germany”. In those days it was a center for media, with its 21 printing houses, and therefore massively important to the spread of the ideas of the Reformation. Walk through the historic center and visit sights such as the Albrecht-Dürer-House and the churches St. Lorenz and St. Sebald. Afterwards continue on to Augsburg. It was here in 1518 at St. Anna's Church that Luther met the papal legate, Cardinal Cajetan, who demanded that Luther submit to the pope. The city was also site of the Diet of Augsburg in 1530, where the Augsburg confession was presented, in which Lutherans explained the nature and teachings of their confession. In the town hall, the Peace of Augsburg was signed in 1555, making the division of Christianity legal. Overnight in Augsburg.

Dachau, Munich

After breakfast it is time to head to the Dachau Concentration Camp. Walk around the site, visit the museum with its reconstructed barracks and crematorium, and learn about the Holocaust, its victims and survivors. A short drive finally brings you to Munich. On a walking tour through the historic center enjoy the view of famous buildings and squares, including the Marienplatz with the town hall and its glockenspiel, as well as the "Frauenkirche" with its distinctive onion dome towers. Also discover the delicious shops that make up the Viktualienmarkt. Overnight in Munich.

Neuschwanstein, Munich

Today explore Germany’s most famous castle! Neuschwanstein, perched high up on a mountain in the Alps, fascinates with its shimmering white towers that appear to be touching the clouds. The castle seems to be plucked straight from a fairytale book, so it is no surprise that it inspired Walt Disney's Sleeping Beauty Castle. It was originally built according to King Ludwig II’s wishes and dreams of owning his own medieval-looking castle. The majestic façade conceals an unbelievable splendor inside: very exquisite furniture, luxurious decors and masterly art. In the afternoon transfer back to Munich for a farewell dinner at the famous Hofbräuhaus. Overnight in Munich.

A driving tour of Berlin will introduce you to such sites as the Brandenburg Gate and the rebuilt Reichstag, whose transparent dome represents the nation’s open government. Pass the ruins of the Kaiser Wilhelm Gedachtniskirche, left as a poignant reminder of what was lost in the Second World War, and stop at a section of the Berlin Wall, a stark testimony to the once divided city. Take a photo at Checkpoint Charlie, the infamous crossing point from East to West Berlin during the Cold War Era. Dinner and overnight in Wittenberg.

Day 3 Wittenberg

This morning, wander the Wittenberg town where Luther lived and taught for 36 years. See where he posted his 95 Theses on the Palace Church door, giving voice to the Reformation. Enjoy an English Service held by the local Luther English Ministry team before returning to your hotel for dinner and overnight.

Day 4 Halle and Eisleben

Cardinal Albert of Mainz precipitated the onset of the Reformation by selling indulgences, and the Protestants in Halle bought him out of his position. Continue to Eisleben, where Luther‘s life both began and ended. Luther was baptized at St. Petri (St. Peter & St. Paul’s Church), where you can see portraits of his wife and parents. This charming little town includes the Luther Family Home, and the house Luther was visiting at the time of his death.

Heidelberg University played an essential role in the debates over the Reformation. Continue to Mainz for dinner and overnight.

Day 8 Mainz, Gutenberg Press, Rhine Cruise
