Saudi visa issuance process goes digital; Applicants must visit VFS centre
The employment, visit and residence visas for Indians can be processed through an e-visa system where immigration authorities extract the details through a QR scan code.
Jeddah: In a significant development, Saudi Arabia has begun to implement e-visa for Indians who are arriving from India.
The new system that eliminated the traditional visa sticker on passports came into force on May 1. Now only the QR code is to be read to extract the visa details. However, visa information is sent to the registered email ID of visa holders and the same can be printed on an A-4 size paper to have a hard copy to prove they have obtained a visa.
The new system is part of Vision 2030 that enables digital governance in a gradual manner. The e-visa initiative came into effect on May 1 in India and other seven countries.
The new system will reduce the time in processing and bring transparency. More importantly, it will weed out the existing travel agent system that acts as an intermediary to endorse Saudi visas in New Delhi and Mumbai.
However, it is now mandatory for any person who is applying for a Saudi visa to visit VFS Global – visa processing centres – as visa applications would be processed through them only.
There is an influx of visitors from across Telangana into Saudi Arabia, who arrive in Saudi Arabia without having to step out of their homes as their visas are processed by travel agencies. However, now it’s mandatory to physically visit the VFS centre, explained NRI activist and AP NRT coordinator Muzzamil Shaikh.
VFS Global Center operates in Punjagutta.

‘Have ambitious goal… expect India to be Saudi’s No. 1 tourist source by 2030’: APAC president Alhasan Aldabbagh
Last year, the country recorded 1.5 million indian travellers, a 50% jump over 2022, and aims to amplify this number in the coming decade..
With 275 direct flights every week between the two countries, Saudi Arabia is betting big on the Indian tourist footfall. Last year, the country recorded 1.5 million Indian travellers, a 50% jump over 2022, and aims to amplify this number in the coming decade.
Alhasan Aldabbagh, president of Asia-Pacific (APAC) markets of the Saudi Tourism Authority, who is on a visit to Delhi , tells DIVYA A his country has launched a range of initiatives for this — from establishing VFS (Visa Facilitation Services) offices in nine Indian cities to visa liberalisation and enhanced air connectivity. Edited excerpts from the interview:
How significant is India as a source market for Saudi Arabia?
India has long been an important partner for Saudi Arabia, reflecting the centuries-old economic and socio-cultural ties. We now have a very ambitious goal for India. We expect India, which is currently No. 3, to be the No. 1 inbound market for Saudi by 2030. Last year, we hosted over 1.5 million Indian travelers, making a substantial increase of 50% from 2022.
This surge is attributed to strategic initiatives, including a partnership with the Indian Premier League, enhanced air connectivity and the establishment of 10 VFS offices across India. We aim to host 7.5 million Indian visitors by 2030.
Which places in Saudi are most popular with Indian travellers?
Medina, Riyadh, Jeddah and AlUla remain the top destinations for visitors… Heritage-focused travel takes the lead as a holiday preference for Indian travellers and Saudi has been promoting its history and culture to attract tourists from around the world, including India.
Key initiatives include the restoration and preservation of heritage sites such as Al-Ula and Diriyah, and the development of cultural festivals and events that showcase Saudi’s traditions and customs.
How has Saudi Arabia facilitated ease of travel for tourists, and for Indians in particular, with respect to visas and flights?
It has never been easier to visit Saudi. Enhanced air connectivity and visa initiatives are key to opening Saudi to Indian travellers.
Indian passport holders with a UK, US or Schengen visa that has been utilised at least once are eligible for an e-visa online. The stopover visa allows Indian passengers flying with Saudia (flag carrier of Saudi Arabia) or Flynas ( private Saudi low-cost airline) to spend up to 96 hours in the country.
With 10 VFS Tasheel offices located across Indian cities, our goal is to enable a seamless travel experience to Saudi.
At a time when the Red Sea has a different connotation, what is the Red Sea tourism Saudi is talking about?
The Red Sea is known for its pristine landscape with the world’s fourth-largest barrier reef system, 90 untouched islands, mountains and mangroves — all in one place. It will soon have its very own airport, The Red Sea International Airport.
We have also taken steps to embrace eco-friendly practices by enhancing biologically diverse habitats including mangroves, seagrass, corals and land vegetation.
Another new island destination in the Red Sea is Sindalah, which will be the first physical showcase of NEOM (a new destination being created in Northwestern Saudi). It is a $500 billion giga-project being built as a zero-carbon smart city that will run on renewable energy.
What are the other major source markets for Saudi Arabia and how do they compare with India?
India remains one of Saudi’s top three inbound source markets and holds a pivotal role in realising Vision 2030. By 2030, we are also aiming to attract Chinese visitors by tailoring experiences for Chinese travellers.

What is Saudi Arabia Family Visit Visa?
How to get a saudi arabia family visit visa, eligibility for saudi family visit visa, when you have this visa, documents required for saudi family visit visa, photo specification of saudi family visit visa, saudi family visit visa processing time, saudi family visit visa fee, how to check saudi family visit visa status, saudi arabia visit visa for indians - definitive guide.
With over 13 percent of the population in Saudi Arabia being Indians, Indians are bound to have family members living in the country. To visit your family living in the country, you will need a Family Visit Visa Saudi Arabia.
For people other than those from the GCC countries, and from a few other visa-exempt nations, everyone requires a permit to enter the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. However, if you are visiting a first-degree family member, you can apply for a Saudi Family Visit Visa . Valid for a maximum of 90 days, or as per approval by the Ministry of External Affairs in Saudi. This permit allows you to visit the country for the purpose of meeting family, and thereby can even take part in tourism activities. The visa comes in the form of a vignette in your passport.
The process of applying for the family visit permit is quite different from other countries. The process although available online, for Indians, the mode is offline. Not just that, the Saudi embassy does not accept applications submitted directly. As a result, you will have to contact a travel agency to do it for you. Now before applying, ensure that you check the eligibility criteria for the visa. Once this is done, you may proceed to make the application as follows -
- The first step involves collecting all the necessary documents required.
- Once you have them, you can visit the MOFA Saudi website, and download the application form.
- Proceed to fill in the form. You can either type it and take a print, or print it and write it by hand. You should also keep in mind to affix your photographs, and sign wherever necessary.
- Pay the visa fees online to the travel agency. You cannot make direct payments to the embassy.
- With the application form, attach the documents and send them to the Saudi Embassy via the travel agent.
Please ensure that you fill in the correct details and that you submit the original documents. Any wrong information or forged documents can lead to a visa rejection . A denied permit is considered as a black mark in your travel history.
To be able to apply for the visit permit, you will have to meet the following criteria -
- You must hold a passport valid for at least 6 months from the date of departure.
- The family member you are visiting must be of the first degree such as children, parents, siblings, or also, spouse, in-laws, etc. You cannot apply for a family visit permit if they are your uncles, aunts, etc.
- The person inviting you must hold a valid family visit visa invitation letter approved by the MOFA in Saudi Arabia.
- The person inviting you must hold a valid Iqama (residence permit)
- Your sole purpose of the visit must be to visit your family.
When you receive your visit permit, keep in mind the following key points to ensure a hassle-free journey -
- Make a note of the vis expiry date. You will not be able to stay in the country beyond this period. If you do stay, it is considered a criminal offence, and you will be fined and deported.
- You cannot engage in work activities while you are on a visit permit.
- You must strictly abide by the rules and regulations of Saudi while you are in the country. You must also respect their culture and traditions.
The list of documents as per the Saudi family visit visa requirements , that are necessary for the application are mentioned as follows -
- An original passport that is valid for at least 6 months from the date of travel. Any old passports need to be submitted as well
- 2 photographs as per regulations.
- Family Visit Visa Invitation letter approval from Ministry of Foreign Affairs, KSA
- Copy of Iqama of the Sponsor
- Passport copy of the sponsor
- Travel insurance issued by the Saudi embassy as per your application
- Proof of relationship with the relative inviting you.
- 2 identical passport size photos
- Recently taken
- Coloured, with a white background
- Dimensions: 35mm X 45mm
- Face should cover 80% of the photo
- Facial expression - neutral
- Head in a central location
- Eyeglasses are not permitted
- Headwear - permitted in case of religious reasons
Due to the lower volume of applications, the family visit permit is generally issued in about 4-5 working days. However, depending on a few factors such as the time taken to get the invitation approved, a higher volume of applications, season, etc, this may take longer to be approved.
The total fees depend on several factors such as the number of entries, service charges by the travel agency, etc. Since the fees can change without prior notice, it is necessary to confirm the amount before you make the application.
Once you have submitted your visa application, you will receive it back via your travel agent within the stipulated processing time. In the meanwhile, you can check your Saudi Family Visit Visa status by contacting the agency, or by emailing the embassy directly with your application number.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can i renew my family visit visa in saudi.
You cannot renew it, but you can definitely extend your visa easily. Unlike a lot of the other nations, the Saudi government accepts a visa extension request. In most cases, you can get an extension up to the total duration of your current permit. If the visa is of 90 days, you can get up to another 90 days. However, keep in mind that you will have to apply for it at least a week before your current visa expires and that you can only stay in the country for a maximum of 180 days as a visitor.
Can I Get a Family Visit Visa Without Documents Such as a Birth Certificate of the Child, Marriage Certificate, etc?
No, you cannot apply for it. A vital part of the documents required for the family visit permit is proof of the relationship. A birth certificate or the marriage certificate can be used to prove this. Without these, there is no evidence that the person you are visiting is your relative.
Can I Work in Saudi Arabia if I am On a Family Visitor Visa?
No, you definitely cannot. While you are on a visitor permit, you are strictly prohibited from working or engaging in work-related activities. The primary condition for which the visa is issued is that your purpose of visit is only to visit your relatives. You can also take part in sight-seeing and tourist activities while you are on this.
After Expiring My Saudi Arabia Family Visit Visa, How Long Can I Stay?
You cannot stay any longer after your visa is expired. You are expected to leave the country on or before the date of expiry. Staying back after the period is considered as an offence and you may face penal charges. However, you are free to apply for an extension if you want to stay in the country.
What is the Medical Test for Saudi Arabia Family Visit Visa?
Since it is a short term permit, there is no requirement of a mandatory medical test. However, for the long-stay permit such as the family visa, you require a medical check-up to be done. Either way, it is suggested that you get a health checkup done before travelling to any country for the sake of your own safety.
Can I Convert My Saudi Arabia Family Visa into a Work Permit?
No, the short term visas cannot be converted into another type. Once your visa expires, you will have to leave the country. However, if you wish to get a work permit, you can apply for jobs in the KSA and find a sponsor. Then, once you return back to your home country after the visit permit expires, you can apply for a new work permit.

Saudi Arabia eyes 7.5 mn Indian travellers as Riyadh pushes Vision 2030
Saudi arabia has a grand vision 2030. the country expects to host 7.5 million indian travellers by 2030, says saudi tourism authority's alhasan aldabbagh, in an exclusive interview to india today..

- Saudi Arabia is looking at welcoming 7.5 million Indian tourists by 2030, says Saudi Tourism's Alhasan Aldabbagh
- Tourism is right at the centre of Saudi Arabia's grand Vision 2030
- Pop concerts, sports events, festivals, all are part of Saudi Arabia's plan for the coming years
Saudi Arabia has a grand Vision 2030 and tourism forms the core of it. The country expects to host 7.5 million Indian travellers by 2030, from across the business, leisure and religious segments.
This aggressive push for tourism also includes various concerts and sports events, says Alhasan Aldabbagh, president of APAC markets at Saudi Tourism Authority.
But Taylor Swift or not, Saudi Arabia is quite the destination to visit. The country has its eyes set firmly on Vision 2030.
Everything that Saudi Arabia is doing at the moment is aligned towards its Vision 2030. If you were to go on social media - be it X, Instagram or Facebook, you would be bombarded by sponsored ads from Saudi Tourism. The promotion is aggressive, and on a massive scale, so, of course, tourism plays a large part in Saudi Arabia's Vision 2030.
We ask him about an 'insane' video of The Line in Neom and The Line that went viral recently, and he takes us through this city that derives its name from the first three letters of the Ancient Greek prefix neo – meaning 'new'. The 'M' in Neom is the first from 'Mustaqbal', an Arabic word meaning 'future'.
The New Future of Saudi Arabia is a Mega City-esque futuristic city straight out of, perhaps, 'The Matrix'. Neom, this outrageously ambitious project, has the entire world's eyes on it.
"Neom is a very well-known project today globally. It has some giga-infrastructures that are in the pipeline, like The Line; then there's Trojena, which is hosting the Asian Winter Cup in 2029, Oxagon, which is an industrial area powered by hydrogen plants, and we have Sindalah, which is opening in Q4 of this year. It's a beautiful island with many properties, with a state-of-the-art yacht club, and a full golf course and shopping experience, and dining as well. So, it's gonna be something very special," says Aldabbagh.
Saudi Arabia is looking at a six-fold increase in tourists from India to Saudi Arabia by 2030. How do they plan on achieving this target, we ask.
So, are they looking at making entry to Saudi Arabia visa-free for Indian passport holders?
If one were to go to Saudi Arabia today, what are the top 5 must-visit places, we ask.
"There are a lot of destinations, and it really depends on the profile of the travellers. So, you have the families, which is the big segment," says Aldabbagh.
What about, say, the millennial, female solo traveller?
"We're protecting nature and putting you in the middle of nature so that you get this authentic experience - whether it's stargazing or climbing the mountains, or having a romantic dinner... these are the kind of unparalleled experiences that are part of what the solo travellers are reporting to be one of the best," gushes Aldabbagh.
What about scuba diving?
"Now, with the Red Sea development that opened up this year, we've got St Regis and Sis Senses. There are great new destinations that haven't been explored before. A lot of divers appreciate this. They want to go to the unexplored untouched areas," says Aldabbagh.
We ask Aldabbagh what in Saudi would appeal the most to the luxury traveller.
"There is a lot. We are redefining luxury. Luxury is not just about expensive stay, expensive resorts; but it's also about having authentic experiences. Luxury is about having exclusivity; luxury is about sustainable tourism as well. And all of these three values that I mention are part of how we're designing all the new projects that are coming up," he says.
Saudi Arabia has roped in Lionel Messi, the GOAT, as their global ambassador. So, he was but an inevitable topic of conversation. Aldabbagh tells us how Messi's participation has helped break many preconceived notions about Saudi Arabia.
Saudi Arabia eyes 7.5 mn Indian visitors by 2030, offers 96-hour free visa
By Shafali Nigam
Greater Noida (Uttar Pradesh) [India], February 22 (ANI): Witnessing increasing demand for travel from India to Saudi Arabia for spiritual and leisure purposes, Riyadh aims to attract 7.5 million Indian visitors by 2030, as articulated by Alhasan Aldabbagh , President - Asia Pacific, Saudi Tourism Authority , during the prominent SATTE 2024 travel show.
Expressing enthusiasm about Saudi's third participation in SATTE, Aldabbagh marked the occasion of Saudi's founding day, commemorating three centuries since its establishment. Emphasising India as a pivotal market, he highlighted a substantial 50 per cent growth in Indian visitors to Saudi Arabia last year, outlining plans to achieve the 2030 vision.
In a conversation with ANI, Aldabbagh said, "We're thrilled to be at SATTE. It's our third participation, and it's one of the most distinguished trade shows in South Asia. Today holds significance as we celebrate the Saudi founding day."
When queried about the Indian market's role in Saudi Arabia , Aldabbagh asserted, "India is a priority market for Saudi. Last year alone, we welcomed 1.5 million visitors from India, presenting a remarkable 50 per cent growth. Looking ahead, our objective is to attract 7.5 million visitors from India to Saudi Arabia as part of our vision for 2030."
Addressing visa facilitation, Aldabbagh mentioned, "Recognising India's importance, we have streamlined access to Saudi. With 10 VFS offices in India, we plan to expand further this year. We've introduced a stopover program, offering a 96-hour free visa for those travelling through Saudi Airlines or flynas (a private Saudi low-cost airline). Additionally, individuals holding a US, UK, or Schengen visa are eligible for e-Visa or visa on arrival."
Regarding the enduring relationship between India and Saudi Arabia , Aldabbagh said, "The mutual goodwill between India and Saudi Arabia has consistently expanded. This growth spans not only in the tourism sector but also in economic, social, and cultural exchanges. We eagerly anticipate our planned activations in India this year, further solidifying our flourishing relationship."
India and Saudi Arabia enjoy cordial and friendly relations reflecting the centuries-old economic and socio-cultural ties.
SATTE (South Asia's Travel and Tourism Exchange) offers a comprehensive platform to domestic and international buyers and professionals from across the travel, tourism and hospitality industry along with National and State Tourism Boards (NTOs and STOs).
SATTE is well-supported by the Ministry of Tourism, Government of India, National and International Tourism Boards, Indian and International travel and trade associations and organisations amongst others, according to SATTE's official website. (ANI)
