Has anyone been successful in getting a refund for a tour cancelled by Gate 1?

There are two posts (#338 and 339) on this Gate 1 thread on the Senior Forum regarding Covid-19 cancellations.

Yes, my husband and I got a full refund quickly, including what we paid for travel insurance. Gate 1 canceled our Spring 2020 Discover Northern France trip and gave us what we considered to be quite generous terms for using the travel credit for a future trip. However, we decided to get a refund instead, and Gate 1 processed our request with no hassle and no pressure to keep the travel credit. We had used a credit card to pay for the deposit, and a check to pay for the balance. We received the refund to our credit card in two weeks, and we received a check for the

remaining balance a week later. We look forward to a future trip with Gate 1.

DRA, thanks for posting your experience. That, unfortunately, does not seem to be the typical experience of the Gate 1 posters on various forums, many of whom are still having to file with the state Attorney General to get satisfaction.

I'm also glad you went for the refund. I think it's better to not have various vouchers hanging out there. Get your money back and start over again when the pandemic wanes and/or when there is a vaccine available.

I hope you get to Northern France! I did a Road Scholar tour several years ago that included many of the same locations shown on the Gate 1 itinerary and had a wonderful time. Normandie and Brittany are lovely, interesting areas!

actually gate 1 has been one of the best in giving refunds. There is a facebook group of 23000 members filled with refunds and very very few upset passengers. Gate 1 hold passenger deposits in escrow and does not use the money to pay suppliers. That is far different than virtually all tour operators. The initial frustration was when passengers cxld their trip befor the company did.

I have a friend who'd posted on FB in June that she was getting the run around from Gate 1 on a refund for a tour Gate 1 cancelled. They were only offering her a voucher. I suggested she contact going the Attorney General route based on the posts on the Senior forum. She filed on a Sunday online, had her refund on Thursday and felt the company had moved on it solely because of the AG filing. This is a person who is a fairly savvy tour traveler. She and her husband have taken yearly tours from various companies since at least 2013. I met them in 2014 on a 3-week tour and that was their 2nd one.

So, I'm happy that Gate 1 is refunding easily for some. Others do seem to be having difficulty and should pursue it, particularly with your added information about them keeping money in escrow.

Please I need to cancel my booking and return my money back and I keep sending emails but no repaly.

@Happiness...do you mean for a Gate1 tour booking? We are just regular people on here, we don't work for TA or any tour companies. If it's Gate 1 you may need to call and then keep a list of who you talk to by phone and what they promise you.

there are different policies if you cxl your reservation or gate 1 cxls the tour. Be sure as it makes a difference.

for my case, gate1 is unfriendly, after 4 months they did not refund the payment, while the southern china confirmed they have refund the payment to gate1. gate1 netherlands even did not give any response to my request after i told them i have confirmation from Southern China, that the refund has been passed to gate1

When can I expect my refund?

When you confirm the cancellation of your booking, we will start the refund process with the airline right away. It can take up to 6 weeks* before the airline has processed the refund back to us. 

*In exceptional cases such as refunds due to medical reasons or in case of airline bankruptcy it might take longer than 6 weeks.

Once we have received the refund, it will be automatically transferred back to you to the payment method you used to pay for the booking. Depending on the payment method, from this moment on it takes 2 to 3 working days. 

Paid with credit card? Your refund will always arrive, even if the credit card is expired or closed. Please contact your payment provider after several days to retrieve the refund.

To reserve a Gate 1 Travel package, a non-refundable deposit is due at the time of booking as follows:

Gate 1 Travel accepts all major credit cards.

All payments made within 30 days of departure must be made by credit or debit card. All reservations must be made no later than 15 days prior to departure.
