Trek Émonda SL 6 road bike review

Giving the ride feel of a thoroughbred GC frame, Trek manages to deliver the perfect balance of stiffness and comfort in the elegant looking and reasonably priced Trek Émonda SL6.

trek emonda sl6

The Trek Émonda SL 6 exists a few places below Trek's signature SLR model but that doesn't stop it embodying the GC spirit and as a frame it certainly feels worthy of Alberto Contador.

It's made the coveted  Cycling Weekly's Editor's Choice list for its lightweight, fast and comfortable ride quality that'll have dancing up climbs like Contador himself.

Think of top Tour de France bikes, and there are only a handful of names that pop into your head faster than the Trek Émonda.

While its old sibling, the Émonda SLR occupies the top echelons of WorldTour racing, we've got our hands on the more reasonably priced Trek Émonda Sl 6, coming in at £2,250.

Made famous in recent years beneath the likes of Alberto Contador and his Trek-Segafredo team mates, the Trek Émonda SL 6 feels like a thoroughbred GC frame regardless of its lower price point, and it's a frame that looks built to race yet still manages to maintain an air of elegance.

Trek Émonda SL 6 : c lassy looks

Sweeping lines blur one area of the frame into the other, and the slender seat stays make the bike look responsive and nimble. Pair the sweeping design with the matte silver paint job, and the bike has a seriously classy look.

But it isn't just surface, and the 500 series OCLV carbon makes the frame a skimpy 1091g. On our scales, the whole bike weighed in at 7.66kg, with any additional weight no doubt coming down to the components rather than the frame.

Down below, an overbuilt, beefy bottom bracket makes sure that every pedal stroke powers the bike forward – which is especially helpful when things start heading uphill.

Trek Émonda SL 6

Without a doubt, the most exciting equipment on the bike is the Shimano Ultegra R8000 groupset. Newly updated, it marks an enormous overhaul of Shimano's everyman groupset.

In terms of shifting feel and action, it's every bit as good as it's older, more expensive Dura-Ace sibling. The re-designed front mech and more ergonomic levers offer a light action to front shifts, and rear shifts are crisp, accurate and powerful.

Of the new Ultegra groupset itself, the most exciting feature are the excellent rim brakes – again, they're every bit the match to the Dura-Ace models.

With them being so good, it was a bit of a disappointment to find them missing on the Émonda. Instead, Trek has specced its Bontrager Speed Stop Pro brakes rather than Shimano's far superior rim brakes.

Bontrager's in house stoppers can't match Shimano's for neither feel nor power but it's an oversight we can forgive considering the Émonda's excellent frame and ride qualities. Besides, the Ultegra brakes are always going to be there for that next upgrade.

Trek Émonda SL6

Again, the Bontrager Paradigm aluminium wheelset could be lighter to match the svelte carbon frame but at this price point they're par for the course and they didn't feel like lead weights when heading uphill.

GC quality frameset

Out on the open road, the ride quality of the GC frame really shines through, and there's a sense of urgency laid up in the carbon that wants to let rip.

But there's a gentler side to it, too, and the high modulus frame gives comfort to the ride. Unlike so many stiff carbon frames, the Trek Émonda Sl 6 feels dampened and absorbent without that dreaded sluggishness that heavier bikes suffer from.

The skip in its step no doubt comes from its lack of weight, and even with the aluminium wheels and overbuilt brakes, the Émonda SL 6 weighs a tiny 7.66kg. Spoil yourself to some killer wheels and you'll bring that down even further.

Dancing out the saddle on the Émonda SL 6

On the hills it climbs like you'd expect from a frame built for Alberto Contador, encouraging you to imitate his signature out the saddle dance on the steepest inclines. But its a frame that really shines on the downs, too. The 992mm wheelbase is manoeuvrable but well balanced and the handling was sharp in the corners, everything you'd expect from a GC super bike.

The Émonda Sl 6's frame is faultless – lightweight, comfort and stiffness all in perfect equilibrium. Its more than a match for the aluminium wheels it comes with, but it has to meet a price point after all.

Trek Emonda SL6 Pro review

Trek’s race bike updated

Warren Rossiter

Wonderful ride position, handling

Not the record-breaking ultra-light SLR chassis

2016 trek emonda sl6

Trek made the headlines with the launch of its new Émonda. In its top-flight SLR guise the OCLV (Optimum Compaction Low Void) carbon frame weighs an astonishingly light 640g, while the disc version weighs an equally impressive 665g. Unfortunately for most of us, that superlight frame only starts on bikes that retail at £4,000 / $4,400 / AU$7,000 and above.

  • Bike of the Year 2018
  • Best bike: our buyer's guide to which bicycle type you should buy in 2018
  • The Trek Émonda SL6 Pro is one of our Bike of the Year bikes for 2018. To read reviews of the other contenders and the categories tested across road, mountain and women's bikes, visit our Bike of the Year hub .

Anything below that and it’s the SL version of the frame made with 500 Series carbon, so my SL frame is closer to 1,019g. On the face of it, that doesn’t seem quite so impressive, but when you consider that the Émonda’s design incorporates most of the seatpost — the Émonda uses a carbon topper instead of a full-length post — that accounts for around 150g-plus on a ‘normal’ frame design.

Internal cabling

The SL6 comes in two guises, the standard SL6 with Bontrager’s mid-range alloy Paradigm wheels and this Pro version, which adds a set of excellent tubeless-ready Aeolus Pro 3 carbon wheels.

The SL6 rides beautifully. Trek seems to have hit the sweet spot across its whole range — the Domane is as plush as you’ll ever need and the Madone sets new standards for comfort on an aero road bike.

The Émonda was always the firmest in Trek’s lineup, and that still rings true, but the firm feel and super-stiff lower half of the bike makes power transfer impressive. Where the new Émonda scores over the previous generation is that the firmness never encroaches into harshness. The chassis feels wonderfully balanced, subtly smoothing out road noise, without having to resort to a high-end carbon bar or big volume tyres.

Trek Émonda SL 6 Pro - Road Bike of the Year Over-£2000 Winner

The SL6 conforms to Trek’s more endurance-biased H2 fit. It’s still pretty racy compared to out and out sportive bikes, but I love the way it fits. Trek has done a lot of research into biometrics, and bike fits are an ever-growing part of its business. It’s paying dividends, rarely have I felt so at home immediately after getting on board a bike.

The Émonda feels perfectly poised when barrelling along on rolling terrain, and when you get into the climbs the rigidity of the chassis and the 1,500g wheelset combine to make the SL6 a wonderful companion. It’s a bike that wills you to get out of the saddle and attack.

The handling is very much like Cannondale’s Evo and Cervélo’s R3D, but slightly less rapid to turn. That’s no bad thing as both the Evo and R3D need your full-on attention at all times, but with the Émonda you can have those moments to cruise, relying on the stability it exudes.

Rim brakes aren't dead yet

Brake performance from the Bontrager Speed Stops felt much better than the previous instances I'd tried them, a lot of that is down to Bontrager’s switch to (Bontrager-branded) Swiss Stop Black Prince pads. Also Trek sent over a more detailed instruction document on the correct way to set up the skeletal Speed Stops.

With the direct-mount brakes properly set and centred, they hold some serious power. I had no issues scrubbing speed in wet or dry conditions. I’d still give Shimano’s direct-mount brakes the edge, like those found on the Specialized Tarmac, as they match the Speed Stops for power but have an extra level of feel at the lever. The Speed Stops do look suitably trick and at 95g they’re also lighter.

The Trek Émonda SL6 Pro is a damn fine road bike and a classy ride

The SL6 is a damn fine road bike. If you’re not sold on discs just yet and want to stay with standard rim brakes, you’d be hard pushed to find a bike that combines a classy ride with such a fine level of equipment. Not even the likes of direct-sale brand Canyon can put together a bike with carbon wheels this good for under £3,000.

I know how ridiculous it would to describe a £2,850 / $3,500 / $4,499 bike as great value, but when you are spending so much, you want to spend smart, and with the SL6 Pro it would be very difficult to buy smarter.

If you thought 2018 was the beginning of the end for the humble rim brake, you’re mistaken, with a bike like this, the Specialized Tarmac and Cannondale Evo, there seems to be a renaissance afoot for the humble caliper brake.

Park “Krasnodar” – one of the best parks in Russia

No comments · Posted by Sergei Rzhevsky in Cities , Entertainment

Park “Krasnodar” (unofficially “Galitsky Park”) is a city park with an area of about 23 hectares located next to the stadium of the football club “Krasnodar”, northeast of the center of Krasnodar , one of the fastest developing cities in Russia.

The park was created with funds from businessman Sergei Galitsky and opened on September 28, 2017. More than 2.5 thousand trees are planted in this park: oak, hornbeam, alder, bonsai, poplar, pine, tulip tree, maple, thuja, decorative plum, and one baobab. Park “Krasnodar” on Google Maps . The construction of the park began in the fall of 2016. The project was developed by the German architectural bureau GMP International. In 10 months, during which work was going on, it was possible to create a beautiful recreational facility with many walking paths, ponds, zones for active leisure, and other interesting areas.

The territory of the park is divided into 30 recreation zones for every taste: from walking with children and watching a movie in the open air to practicing active sports. Among them are a summer amphitheater, labyrinths, playgrounds, a cafe, a rope park, a skate park, a climbing wall, a terraced garden, a fountain, an English park, and much more.

All objects of this urbanistic natural complex consist of spirals, bends and hemispherical lines, which are especially noticeable from a height.

Thank you so much, Kelly!!! Each Concert is a nite of enchantment!!! Gianluca, Ignazio, & Piero, you have delighted your Fans with this 2016 Concert Tour!!! It will soon come to completion!!! I hope you have a great relax time with family & friends!!!

Not much relax time since Mexico comes up in July. Rest when possible guys. Joanie G

Another beautiful concert to go down in history. Thanks Kelly!

Krasnodar, photos OMG Vip: http://omgvip.com/il-volo-june-12/

I am worried that the guys sound tired and worn down. When this itinerary was first put out I was worried that there were too many concerts in close order. Now in a couple of days they have a short break. I think their voices need the rest. Producers seem to think $ $ $ and I worry about the guys’ health and their vocal health. On their short break everyone think quiet and pleasant dreams and hot tea .

I worry about their packed schedule too. Good thing they are so young and healthy. Still….

I don’t know much about voice but this concert tour has been so extensive, and with so much traveling, that I also worry how they can possibly keep singing so well and keep up their energy. I’m grateful they gave so many concerts in the US but I have thought it might be wise to have a week or more between so many concerts. Even when there are a few days off, they seem to have another event they must attend. I hope they will have a good amount of time to rest and enjoy their families and friends.

I listen to them sing daily with my EarPods on, and there are times, not many, but sometimes you can detect the hoarseness in Piero and ignazio’s voices when they hit those high notes. Ignazio hits so many high notes that I’m thinking they can drop some notes a few octaves. I really hope they get some rest for their bodies (great young bodies), their voices (greatest voices this side of heaven) and their beautiful minds. Hopefully their next tour will not be so grueling. I miss you guys a lot especially after meeting you in person. Leaving for LAS VEGAS in a few weeks with my sisters and I will always think of all of you and that wonderful day (3/25/16) when we all met. Thank you for the great memories. IL VOLO has knack of bringing people together.

Thanks, Kelly for my morning “concert”. I just can’t get enough of our boys.

Thank you Lydka. On stage they make it look so easy and effortless. Little do we realize all the hard work that goes on unseen before and between shows. Makes one appreciate the effort that goes into every show all the more. They give so much pleasure !!!

Marion, you are right, I agree with you, that’s why I put this video here. I wanted to show a little bit what is happening behind the scenes. I wish you nice day ! Greetings ! 🙂

Thank you so much Kelly !!! I have enjoyed each and every one of your concert updates !! This tour has been nothing less then magnificent !! Our incredible guys aim to please and they do at each and every concert no matter how they might be feeling. The tour may be ending but I think they are working on quite a few projects so I’m afraid they might not get as much relax time as they might need in order to recharge their batteries !! I certainly hope they will be able to go home for awhile and enjoy their family and friends !!!

HAHAHA, PIERO AND IGNAZIO ARE SO CUTE AND ADORABLY FUNNY. LUCKY GIRL.

Interview: at first was greeting, boys told in Russian Good morning and Thanks. The moderator asked whether they speak Russian a little and they said just a little. Then they in Russian said My name is .. Moderator asked: Means you can easily get acquainted with russian girls?Piero said That is it and Ignazio in Russian to moderator You are a beautiful girl. Next question was What is your highest achievement for today? Answer: Since 2009 a lot has happened. But I think for the Italian artist to win San Remo is the highest award. We won San Remo in 2015 and as you know, represented Italy on an Eurovision. Moderator asked on Polina, she was their rival in Eurovision . They remember on her and said Hi to her and Piero said : I consider that in music shouldn’t be rivalry. Everyone has own way. She asked if they watched Eurovision this year, Piero said : We were in Brazil, we had no opportunity to watch a competition. For Gianluca was the best Justin Timberlake, he is his big fan. The moderator asked what are their bad characters in their personalities.Ignazio said: Of course there are a lot of. Gianluca is the perfectionist. He loves when everything is ideal. Piero rules in everything. When he says it is necessary to make it so, means it is necessary to make it so. Piero said Ignazio is the laziest person in the world. Ignazio: I love what we do. Well I am lazy sometimes, especially when it is necessary to wake up early in the morning. Moderator asked about his nickname “man – disaster”.Answer was Ignazio is the most amusing in our group. At concerts the audience is laughing all the time. He is a funny fellow of group. Ignazio said he is a clown.

Next question was : It is true that Ignazio forgot lyrics once? What did you do in this situation?Piero said : It was in Switzerland. All of us forgot words. We sang Charles Aznavour’s song Tous les visages de l’amour.,we didn’t sing it one year. We were on the stage and I began Tous les visages de l’amour.Tous les visages de l’amour and I understood that I forgot words. Gianluca began to laugh, he forgot words too and Ignazio forgot words also. 3 minutes we sang Tous les visages de l’amour. The moderator had question about their meeting with Woody Allen.Answer was : Yes, we met at restaurant where we did work for TV show . We love very much Woody Allen. All love Woody Allen. It was our second meeting.Allen said a compliment to them. Answer was : We are improved all the time. He noted it.Piero said : We are constantly studying For example, now we are preparing big show in Florence at Piazza Santa Croce . It is very important for us. We are going to sing songs of three great tenors Pavarotti, Domingo and Carreras. Pavarotti is not with us any more. And Placido Domingo will sing several songs with us. José Carreras too. We plan tours with these songs and surely we will arrive with this program to Russia.Moderator asked when they will sing in Russian language . Answer was We already sang a piece of song with Toto Cutugno (they sang little piece of song to moderator). They said it is necessary to learn and promise to return soon to Russia and also they promise to learn something in Russian (song). The moderator asked Gianluca on his favourite kind of pizza. Is Margarita and he can’t really resist when he sees pizza. Moderator mentioned their album Grande Amore.Boys wanted to know how to say Grande Amore in Russian language.Moderator asked if they found their grande amore. Piero said : Our grande amore is music.

Gianluca said :I can tell you, when you are in love, you sing better. You can add some new emotions to the voice.Moderator told them : Your voices are unbelievable, when you sing even glasses tremble on a table. Boys said : We tried it on one show in Brazil. Moderator then said : It is a pity, we haven’t glasses, to check it . Sing something to our audience that they can wake up in excellent mood. Boys asked how Russians say Good morning. Then they said Good morning Moscow and Russia. At the end they sang a little bit of Grande Amore. 🙂

'One of the fiercest climbing bikes available, the new Émonda is even faster thanks to a dose of aero.'

'I expect so much from a modern high-end pro-level road racing bike that it’s hard to exceed those expectations. It’s rare when a bike does: The Émonda SLR is one of those rare bikes.'

No image available

'It's an incredible update from Trek.'

'The updated Emonda packs one hell of a punch, and Trek has a winner on its hands. The integrated cockpit is nice and all, but the real win is the H1.5 fit, which makes the Emonda feel more stable while maintaining the aggression and responsiveness of previous Emondas. That, coupled with a lightweight construction, comfortable ride and aerodynamic shaping, brings Trek's top-of-the-line climber from a very good bike to an excellent one.'

'The Emonda is still light, and it’s still stiff, but now there’s an extra dose of free speed.'

'Overall, Trek has done a solid job here of updating the Emonda, infusing meaningful improvements in several key areas, but without breaking the basic formula that has made the bike so popular.'
