Before we get into the solutions, I’ll share one pro tip: reserve the bottom bunk for the youngest kid and the top for the older, more sound sleeper. While you can craft top bunk solutions for toddlers, it’s much easier to reduce the risk of injury by confining them to the lower bunk. Here are some solutions:

Baby Gate Option

If you’re lucky enough to have two solid sides marking the entrance to the bunk bed, a really easy solution is to bring along your traditional baby gate (or purchase one for the RV) and secure it in the bunk bed opening when you put your kid to bed. Baby gates are probably the easiest solution if you have the right bunk setup.

However, many RVers have a challenging corner bunk setup. The problem is that the opening is at an angle, and it’s almost impossible to secure a tension-style baby gate. However, you can get a little creative by flipping the baby gate 90 degrees and installing it with the tension ends on the top and bottom of the bunk. Voilà! You now have a secure barrier between the bunk bed and a drop to the floor.

Retractable gate solution

Like the baby gate, you can use a retractable gate to keep your little one secured in the bunk. These gates get mounted to the wall with screws, but they make opening and closing the barrier super easy and provide quick access to the bunk area. They’re also usually made from mesh, so the bunk bed won’t look and feel like a mini jail. They’re a great solution for a corner bunk setup since you can usually mount these on the flat wall on the interior of the bunk. Even though the opening may be at an angle, it shouldn’t be a problem because the gate is flexible.

Bedrail Guards

Another popular solution is to install regular bed guard safety rails. With some bunk setups, you may find that the guard is too long for your opening. Be sure to measure the opening and guard. You may also be able to purchase a wooden guard, and you can cut it down to size to accommodate the opening to the bunk bed.

I’ve also seen setups with people using a safety net to keep kids in bed. However, if you have very young children, a solid barrier is usually best, so your little one doesn’t get tangled in it.

Portable Toddler Beds

Another good solution for small kids is to place a portable toddler bed on the bunk. The higher sides of the bed will keep small children from rolling around and keep them in the bunk, helping you have worry-free sleep. This may be the best way to solve a safety issue if you need a short-term solution. Kids will get used to the bed over time, so it’s usually not necessary to remodel a bunk for a short timeframe. Portable beds come in different sizes, so make sure you measure first to find the right size for your setup.

Depending on the size of your RV, your RV bunk beds will have a nonstandard size. Many will be 34″ long with varying widths of 28″, 32″, or even 50″ for a full(er) size bunk. Zipit Bedding Alternative For Bunks

There's another product called Zipit Bedding that is similar to Beddy's.

Zipit is marketed as kids bedding, so it is great for your RV bunk beds.

It's an all-in-one fitted sheet that is also reversible and comes with pockets in the sides for your kids stuff.

Just like Beddy's, you'll have to jerry rig it a little to get it to fit right. But once on, it's MUCH easier to make the beds!

Look For Cot Sheets For Your RV Bunks

On Amazon (and elsewhere) you might luck out finding a fitted sheet advertised for a cot that fits your bunk mattress perfectly.

Some of the Amazon listings even offer multiple sizes and colors AND materials!

This way, in theory, you wouldn't have to use sheet straps underneath to keep the fitted sheet in place, long as you get dimensions that almost perfectly (or perfectly) fit your bunks.

How Do You Put Sheets On An RV Bunk Bed?

If you choose to use regular RV twin sheets for your RV bunk bedding, they might fit OK.

Simply connect the camper bunk fitted sheet underneath using sheet straps if it is oversized.

This keeps the RV bunk bedding fitted sheet snugly in place.

Then, throw the top sheet over it and tuck it in under the bunk mattress.

Place the comforters or comforter on top, and you're set to go camping.

How Do You Change Bedding On A Bunk Bed?

Changing bedding on an RV bunk bed can be a pain.

It depends on the width and the height of the bunk.

The wider it is, the harder it will be to reach the opposite side to tuck and untuck the fitted sheet.

The Difference Between RV Bedding and Residential Beds

1. It’s a Hard Knock Life for RV Bedding

No matter how well built your motorhome or travel trailer is, your RV bedding will be exposed to temperature change, moisture, travel conditions, and other conditions. Your bricks-and-sticks residential bed lives in a more stable environment, so it lasts longer.

Generally, the average lifespan of an RV mattress is 8 years. However, full-timers may want to change their out after every U.S. Presidential election.

2. “Placeholder” RV Mattresses

Unless your RV comes with a top-quality mattress, many RV manufacturers have changed their perspective on their provided RV bedding. They’re good enough to sleep on, but in the Modern Era (2008-Present), RV companies use “placeholder” mattresses.

With so many mattress companies now offering RV mattress sizes, linens, and accessories, RVers are replacing the original RV mattress with an aftermarket RV mattress that fits their comfort level.

3. RV Beds Lay on Wood

Your residential bed can have a box spring, spring-like slats, and other support innovations beneath the mattress. Under your RV mattress is a version of plywood; that’s it. There are various pads, pillows, and other accessories if you need additional support for your spine or joints.

4. RV Bedding Has Many Sizes

Some RV mattresses come in residential sizes. In those situations, you can go to your favorite retail store and pick up RV bedding in every color, material, and pattern. But as you’ll see, when you try fitting a set of queen sheets on an RV short queen bed, it won’t fit correctly.

Residential mattresses typically come in 6 sizes:

RV bedding and mattresses have many more sizes. Designers have to make every square inch count. If they can shave off an inch on a bed to make a slide box fit better and increase the walkway, they’ll do it if needed.

This type of decision-making has occurred since 1910. Yet, the Modern Era is the most excellent time to find RV bedding. Today, you’ll find the most aftermarket RV mattresses, linens, and accessories made in RV dimensions.

To help you understand the different RV mattress sizes, here’s a chart of the typical sizes and where you’ll usually see them. Those in bold are residential mattress measurements.

If you have a corner-cut mattress in your Class C motorhome, these mattresses come in either a three-quarter, RV short queen, or RV king. If it’s a king, the length may measure 75-inches instead of the full 80-inches.

The next section of our RV Bedding Guide is the accessories. Again, some may feel that they’re not needed, but we’ve already shown you that your RV mattress has a more challenging life than your bricks-and-sticks home bed.

Small and mid-size travel trailers with front bedrooms offer the convenience of accessing the storage bay when you lift the bed platform up. The problem with that is your exterior bay’s weatherstripping isn’t perfect. In extreme temperatures, you could feel like you’re sleeping on an icebox or furnace. There are moisture considerations to keep in mind too.

Here are some RV bedding accessories that can further protect your mattress and linens giving you a better night’s rest.

1. RV Mattress Pads

Mattress pads are great for all types of mattresses. Besides protecting them from spills and holding your sheets better, they protect your RV’s bed from moisture. Water is fine for sinks and bathrooms, but you don’t want it building up on your mattress. It quickens memory foam elasticity loss and rusts innersprings.

If you’re sensitive to allergens, mattress pads prevent them from getting into your mattress. Thicker versions even add a layer of comfort. The best part is that they’re machine washable. If you’re starting to take allergy medicine at night more often, wash your RV’s mattress pad. That may solve the problem.

2. RV Mattress Toppers

Buying a new RV mattress might not be in the cards right now. However, adding a bed topper as an extra layer can counter some of the thinning effects as your mattress becomes more worn. At one point, this author could feel the wood platform under the memory foam mattress on hot nights. An affordable topper saved his back.

RV mattress toppers also breathe. They can keep moisture and heat from building up, better protecting a mattress. In turn, this can elongate your mattress’s lifespan. Of course, spilling your morning coffee on the topper isn’t as bad as if it was on the bed.

3. RV Mattress Insulators

RV manufacturers like Lance, Alaskan Campers, and others include radiant sheets under their RV mattresses in all-season packages. To you, it may look like shipping bubble wrap with an aluminum foil coating. But, UV rays and heat energy “see” it as an insulating barrier.

If your RV season continues after September through March, you’ll want to have a roll of radiant sheeting like Reflectix or another version. Here are some other tips if you plan on cold-weather camping .

4. RV Mattress Moisture Barriers

On the opposite side, during the peak of the RV camping season, using an RV mattress moisture barrier between your bed platform and mattress will save you money. Protective layers like Tochta’s HyPur FLO Mattress Moisture Barrier keeps the sweat and other moisture from ruining your RV bedding.

5. Head and Joint Pillows

The best pillow in the right spot can distinguish between pleasant dreams and insomnia. For some, a simple head pillow works great. However, for that side, back, or front sleeper that wakes up sore, “there’s a pillow for that.”

Triangular wedges, contour head pillows, knee pillows , and others can keep your body aligned at night. Without his knee spacer pillow, this author won’t turn the ignition on his motorhome. It may be an RV bedding accessory, but he added it to his essential accessories list.

What and Where Can I Buy RV Sheets and Linens?

Not everyone will want to sleep in Camco’s Life is Better at the Campsite RV bedding sheet set, but they are available on Amazon and in camping stores. There are many styles, colors, and patterns for RV bedding sizes.

1. Types of RV Bedding Linen Materials

Like residential linens, you’ll find all of the same sheet materials. When choosing your linens, think about how often you’ll be using them, when you’ll be camping, and who’s using them. Are you allergic to natural fibers? Is anyone rough on their sheets? Do you need a deep pocket sheet for a thicker mattress?

Egyptian Cotton: Real Egyptian cotton is small in diameter but has extra-long fibers. It’s very smooth and soft. Look for Extra-Long Staple (ELS) on the packaging to know it’s real.
Cotton: Cotton breaths and is very affordable. Higher thread counts aren’t necessarily better, especially if you’re replacing your RV bedding due to your pet’s claws creating holes.
Flannel: Flannel is made from cotton, but it retains heat. Keep them in your storage bays for cooler nights.
Satin/Silk: Satin and silk sheets are fragile and not recommended for the RV lifestyle. They are hypoallergenic and usually have special washing instructions. Leave them at home unless you need them for medical reasons or special occasions.
Microfiber: Microfibers are synthetic and wrinkle-free. Flatweave versions trap heat and absorb moisture which can be an asset to protect your mattress.
Polyester: Polyester is a highly durable petroleum plastic. It’s great for the kids and for convertible dinettes and sofas. If the sheets catch on the furniture’s mechanics, it’s the least likely to tear.

2. Zipper-Style RV Bedding

If you have this same problem or want an easier way to keep your RV bed linens in place, you may want to look into zipper sheets. Class C motorhomes with corner beds can be tricky since there’s virtually no corner access. Brands like QuickZip have all of the fashionable colors and styles.

Zipper sheets encompass the entire mattress and zip around the perimeter. That way, you can retire your contortion RV bedding performance.

3. Blankets & Comforters

To top off your RV bedding, you want blankets and comforters that store well. The problem with comforters is that they take up a lot of storage space. The best way to store comforters when you’re not using them is to keep them in zip-top vacuum bags with other RV winter gear.

Summer weave blankets are light for the RV camping season, expel just enough heat to keep you comfortable, and take up very little storage space. In addition, these blankets are very budget-friendly and come in almost every color imaginable.

If you need something heavier, fleece blankets are surprisingly warm. Much like the weave blankets, they’re easy on the wallet, store well, and fit any decor.

One of the most unusual things that new RVers find is that RV mattress sheets aren’t the same size as the mattress sheets you have at home!

Whether you have been RVing for years or just bought a new trailer or camper, you’re probably wondering where to find the best RV sheets sets to easily make your bed without any hassle. We have tested a lot of RV sheets with our trailers and definitely have a few favorite choices!

What’s the Deal with RV Mattress Sheets?

What is different about RV mattress sheets? A lot, actually.

RV mattress sizes can be different. They aren’t ALL different, so you really have to know your mattress in your rig. Take a measurement of the size if you need to, and then compare to standard size queen, king or bunk bed (twin bed) mattresses.

If you need a custom size mattress, such as a short queen or short king or curved edges, check out our tutorial on how to make a custom RV mattress yourself (it costs less than ordering from a bed manufacturer).

Not all mattresses in an RV are an unusual size, though. Many RVs and travel trailers can accommodate standard size queen and king beds. Or twin beds in the bunk bed area.

You will want RV mattress sheets to be easy to put on your bed. That goes without saying in a home, too. But in an RV, it can be more challenging. You might not have room to pick up the mattress easily.

Or it can be positioned to where you have to be sitting on the bed to get the covers to go over the edge of the mattress. Which can be difficult.

Hard-to-reach mattresses are often surrounded by walls, which can cause mold growth under your mattress. Be sure to add one of these mats under your bed to protect yourself.

Or you might be trying to make a bunk bed that is in the bunkhouse and you have to position yourself on a ladder while trying to get a sheet set on or off easily.

And no one wants all of the excess sheets hanging off the side of the RV mattress or at the end because you’re using traditional sheets that are too big!

How to Make an RV Mattress More Comfortable

Let’s face it. If you’re buying an RV and using the mattress that it comes with, chances are it’s not going to be too comfortable!

That’s what happened with our RV. The flower-covered mattress was hard and uncomfortable. But we weren’t prepared to buy a new RV mattress at that time. However, I have since found some amazing natural RV mattresses that I would have loved to have got before our trip.

I say you should invest in a new mattress. Because you need good quality sleep every night. But it’s not in everyone’s budget.

RV Bunk Sheets

Trying to get RV bunk bed sheets can sometimes be a little difficult. It all depends on what the size of the bunk house is. And whether or not you have to balance on a ladder to change the sheets.

Keep this in mind – you must know the dimensions of your particular RV bunk bed or over-the-cab bed! Even if you are using the mattress sets for the RV sofa bed or turning your dinette into a bed.

Start with those dimensions first – length & width – to make sure that these RV bunk bedding sheets will work for you.

Can I Use Regular Sheets from Home in my RV?

Yes, you can. Especially if you have a normal size mattress in your RV, van or truck camper. However, if the mattress is custom size, your sheets won’t fit as well. If you don’t mind tucking in extra fabric under the mattress or having sheets that don’t fit snuggly, then you can use normal sheets from home.

What is the Best Material for RV sheets?

Chances are, you’re not showering every day when camping. And you might be more physically active and sweaty. You want a material that will absorb odors and stay fresh as long as possible.

Cotton and wool are great options. Bamboo (also called Tencel) is naturally anti-bacrobial and absorbs odors. Polyester is rugged, however it doesn’t wick away moisture well. And you might be sweating more if you are camping with no air-conditioning, or your RV has humidity built up from using air-conditioning.

What About Those Zippered Sheets for Camping?

There are a few companies that make sheets where the top of the fitted sheet actually zips off, leaving the rest of the fitted sheet to stay on the mattress. This is great for camping, because it allows you to easily remove the area that’s gets dirty.

Zippered sheet sets are more expensive than normal sheets. However, you might find the convenience and ease of making the bed worth the additional upfront cost over the long term. We haven’t personally tried them yet, but have many friends who like using them.

How Can I Wash My Sheets While Camping?

If the thought of sleeping on the same set of sheets for a few weeks grosses you out, there are easy ways to clean your sheets while camping. If you have an RV with built-in washer, that is the easiest way. Otherwise, you can find a laundromat while driving to wash your sheets. Many campgrounds also have laundry facilities, which saves you time since you can wash your sheets while going back to your tent or camper.

Perhaps the thought of using shared washing machines freaks you out. There are personal washing machine systems that you can bring while camping. These tiny washing machines can’t do a lot of laundry at once. And you will need a water source. But they will clean your sheets and clothes in your own washing machine without worrying about sharing germs or cooties. Some good choices are this electric washing machine with a wash and spin cycle, or this retro, compact hand-cranked washing machine .

We own one of these Scrubba Portable Washing Bags , too. It definitely requires elbow grease, and will only fit a small amount at a time, but it could be an answer if you have no extra space for a portable unit.

Specifications Definitions

GAWR (Gross Axle Weight Rating) – is the maximum permissible weight, including cargo, fluids, optional equipment and accessories that can be safely supported by a combination of all axles.

UVW (Unloaded Vehicle Weight)* - is the typical weight of the unit as manufactured at the factory. It includes all weight at the unit’s axle(s) and tongue or pin and LP Gas. The UVW does not include cargo, fresh potable water, additional optional equipment or dealer installed accessories. *Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

CCC (Cargo Carrying Capacity)** - is the amount of weight available for fresh potable water, cargo, additional optional equipment and accessories. CCC is equal to GVWR minus UVW. Available CCC should accommodate fresh potable water (8.3 lbs per gallon). Before filling the fresh water tank, empty the black and gray tanks to provide for more cargo capacity. **Estimated Average based on standard build optional equipment.

Each Forest River RV is weighed at the manufacturing facility prior to shipping. A label identifying the unloaded vehicle weight of the actual unit and the cargo carrying capacity is applied to every Forest River RV prior to leaving our facilities.

The load capacity of your unit is designated by weight, not by volume, so you cannot necessarily use all available space when loading your unit.
