Imagine Dragons to Trace Rise From Dive Bars to Stadiums in New Documentary

Imagine Dragons are prepping a new documentary centered around a special homecoming concert in Las Vegas, Imagine Dragons Live in Vegas .

The film will primarily feature footage from Imagine Dragons’ performance at Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas last September. Mixed with archival and contemporary interviews with the band — Dan Reynolds, Wayne Sermon, Ben McKee, and Daniel Platzman — the movie will chronicle how Imagine Dragons went from playing dive bars and casinos around the Vegas Strip to headlining the city’s gigantic football stadium.

Recently, Imagine Dragons showed their support for striking film and television writers with an acoustic performance at the WGA picket line in Los Angeles. They also just dropped a new short film for their song, “Crushed,” which recounts the story of a 14-year-old boy in Ukraine in an effort to raise awareness about the devastation of Russia’s ongoing war.

Live in Vegas: Takeaways from new Imagine Dragons concert film

The documentary chronicles the band’s sold-out Allegiant Stadium show.

It was a short one, the Las Vegas Review-Journal’s first interview with the Imagine Dragons — just four emailed questions sent to the band as part of a weekly Q&A series with local acts.

Run date: Nov. 26, 2009, Thanksgiving day, but four months after the group got their start.

R-J: “What do Imagine Dragons sound like?”

The future superstars: “Our songs are synth-y, loud and dance-inducing. But we try not to take ourselves too seriously and hope that our music is, above all else, a lot of fun.”

Does Las Vegas manifest itself in your music much?

“It’s impossible to live in a city with as much personality as Las Vegas and not be influenced by it….The vibe here is energetic and electric. That energy is probably what manifests most in our music. We try to funnel it into every aspect of our work.”

Thirteen years later, Imagine Dragons would headline the biggest concert ever by a Vegas band, selling out Allegiant Stadium on Sept. 10, 2022.

That loud, sweaty, pyro-enhanced night is captured in a new concert documentary, “Imagine Dragons Live in Las Vegas,” which premieres Friday on Hulu.

It’s a candid, behind-the-scenes look at the Imagine Dragons’ packed-to-the-rafters homecoming.

Even if you’ve followed the band from day one, you’ll likely learn a thing or two about the group and their rise to multi-platinum-selling success from the film.

Here are a few takeaways from the two-hour documentary:

They definitely paid their dues

The footage is occasionally a little grainy, but the message it conveys is much more clear: Imagine Dragons hustled hard back in the day en route to filling stadiums, as evidenced by some live video clips of their early years featured in the documentary.

They there are performing in a small room at Caesars Palace, on morning talk shows, at Bite of Las Vegas, now long-haired guitarist Wayne Sermon rocking a crew cut and a blue sport coat in the middle of the afternoon during one of their break-out shows.

One time, they even opened up for a mime at a local mall.

“Looking back at a lot of those early shows in Las Vegas, we should have been embarrassed by some of them,” Sermon acknowledges in the documentary. “There’s times when, admittedly, I was like, ‘What am I doing?’”

Imagine Dragons’ first regular gig: playing five nights a week at O’Shea’s — “cheapest beer on the Strip,” singer Dan Reynolds notes from the stage during the concert portion of the film — performing covers and trying to drum up interest for their shows on the weekend, when they played their own material.

Back then, they were just trying to feed themselves, sans day jobs.

“Our goal was to be a self-sustained indie band that could make enough money to pay rent and have food,” Reynolds explains at the beginning of the film. “No idea that it would be what it is. You can’t ever predict that.”

He doesn’t try to hide his emotions — that would be like asking a bird not to fly or the cat not to destroy the furniture — and so instead he’s an open book, pages occasionally damp with tears.

At multiple points in the film, we see Reynolds nearly overcome by emotion, both while performing and being interviewed.

Sometimes, those tears are born of elation — like when Reynolds reflects on his hometown, listing all the schools he attended here early in the show — at others, they’re conjured by loss: one of the concert’s most poignant moments is when he dedicates the song “Demons” to his late sister-in-law Alisha Reynolds, who died from cancer.

He speaks openly from the stage about his ongoing time in therapy, urging others who struggle with depression and anxiety to hang on, and seek help.

“You are not alone,” Reynolds tells the crowd. “Your life is always worth living. Stay with us. I have lost too many people who think that their life doesn’t matter.”

It’s taken a minute for him to get to the point where he can share his feelings like this on stage: as he explains in the film, it’s only recently that he’s become truly comfortable with what Imagine Dragons represent, what they’re trying to impart to their fans.

“This last year is the first time I just really felt I knew who we are — and that feels really great,” he says.

To underscore as much, at one point during the show, while the band is playing a short acoustic set in the middle of the stadium, Reynolds gets so caught up in the excitement of the moment that he bolts from the stage, runs a lap around the venue floor, dodging fans, hurtling stanchions, no security detail able to keep up with him.

“When you’re feeling that complete freedom,” he notes afterward, “it’s like, why not go for a run?”

Imagine Dragons are Las Vegas through-and-through

The only-in-Vegas moment comes late in the show via an aerialist in a flowing red dress spinning herself to rafters amid a phalanx of dancers and a fellow in a silver trenchcoat gripping a smoke-spewing teapot.

Afterward, Reynolds shares an anecdote about seeing Cirque perform when he was a teenager, taking a date there after his first high school dance.

“I was a janitor at a law firm here in Las Vegas,” he recalled. “I saved up all my money, and we went to see ‘Mystere.’ Long story short, I never thought in my entire life that I’d be on stage with Cirque Du Soleil.”

Makes sense, though: Imagine Dragons and Cirque are bonded by the showmanship inherent in the city both have become synonymous with.

“The energy, the larger-than-life mentality that we bring to every performance is Las Vegas personified,” bassist Ben McKee says in the film.

Sermon elaborates.

“I don’t think our band would have been anything like what it is if we had been in any other city than Las Vegas,” he contends.

Born and raised here, Reynolds carries himself as if indivisible from the place he seems destined to forever call home.

“I don’t ever want to leave this town,” Reynolds sings on “It’s Time,” the first single from the band’s debut album “Night Visions,” released nearly 10 years to the day of the concert in question.

Despite touring the world ever since, he never really has.

The concert was really great. Every members of the band had SO much energy that they shared with the public. Dan Reynolds made a speech on the LGBT youth at some point during the concert and that was great, he spoke with his heart and the public gave this love back. The light were blowing our minds and they were at their best during the whole concert.

At some point, there only were instumentals and the singer (Dan Reynolds) lied down on the ground and started doing yoga, which was pretty funny.

In the middle of the concert, they went on the second stage (smaller and in the middle of the room) so everyone could see them.

They ended the concert with the first song we have (my sisters and I) discovered them with six years ago.

I truly encourage people to go to their concert because they are one of the most fantastic band of the 21th century.

PS: if I can share an advise, if you really want to bring a goodie home, buy it BEFORE the concert. At the end, there are a lot of people and, I guess, less choice (we bought it before the concert so we had all the pleasure and time to choose what we wanted)

I’ve been listening to the group since so long, and the first song I heard from them was Radioactive, which everyone knows I’m sure of it. The concert run an hour late, but nobody was complaining and they started with I don’t know why, which immediately put everybody in the mood. There was many generations mixed, and all the adults around me didn’t really knew imagine dragons, weren’t really sure if they were going to like it, and were really surprised to see they were just loving the concert. The group was playing and singing at the perfection, all of them was contributing to the making of each songs, and there was such a good atmosphere it was really incredible. Dan Reynolds (the lead singer) talked really often to the crowd during the show and also took a moment to raise awareness about LGBT youth, which was a really touching moment. Their energy, their complicity with each other, everything was perfect, and the last song, radioactive, there so well known hit, just ended the concert with a great energy. I loved it, probably one of the best concert I’ve ever been. Imagine dragons is not like many artists who just come on stage, say hi, sing ( either in playback, or wrong), don’t interact with the crowd, and get out of stage without a thank you. Imagine dragons talked to us so many times it was really pleasant, I’ve never seen a group or an artist take the time to say something relevant, they even went into the crowd during the show, to the back of the concert hall so people in the back could see them at least for 3 songs. It was perfect, and I sure will go to their next concert, because seeing Imagine dragons in live, is just magic and unforgettable.

This was the first concert that we took our two children to (ages 10 and 12) and they had a great time! The venue (Shoreline Amphitheater) was fantastic and we enjoyed our view from the lawn.

The opening bands were engaging and certainly warmed up the crowd! When Imagine Dragons appeared, our kids were really excited and ready for a "full concert experience"! Imagine Dragons did not disappoint! They played all the popular songs as well as some older ones. They even changed stages halfway through the concert which was a great bonus! The band definitely knew how to keep the crowd engaged from asking us to sing along to "Yesterday" and even releasing large balloons for the crowd to bat around throughout the second half of the concert.

Their final few songs, which included Radioactive, were absolutely brilliant! They had so much energy at the end it was infectious! Their extended drumming section in Radioactive was awesome! They ended with two songs instead of a typical walk off and then come back for an encore. Their final song, Believer, was a rocking anthem that had us all walking away singing at the end of the concert. Overall, it was a great first concert for my kids and a great reminder of why live music matters so much!

Imagine Dragons Reflect On Live In Vegas Concert, Their Favorite Songs & The Power Of Music

Imagine Dragons Live in Vegas , which marks Hulu's second project in partnership with Interscope Records, is a documentary that reunites the chart-topping band with the city that birthed them. Director Matt Eastin combines extensive footage from the Allegiant Stadium stop of the “Mercury Tour” with archival interviews in which the four band members reminisce about their rise to fame and give love to Las Vegas on and offstage.

Imagine Dragons' music has become a staple of pop culture, playing nonstop on the radio and appearing everywhere from the theme song of Arcane Legends to promotion for previous seasons of The Boys . But no matter how big the band gets — and the crowd shown in Imagine Dragons Live in Vegas is a testament to the level of stardom they've reached — their heart belongs to the music. With never-flagging energy, the musicians shared an electric experience with fans onstage while recounting their journey for the documentary cameras backstage.

Screen Rant spoke to lead vocalist Dan Reynolds, bassist Ben McKee, and lead guitarist Wayne Sermon about their experience performing and filming Imagine Dragons Live in Vegas . The band members revealed some of their favorite moments from the concert at Allegiant Stadium, how songs become part of the Imagine Dragons discography in the first place, and how passionately they feel about spreading a positive message through their music.

Imagine Dragons Talk Live in Vegas

Screen Rant: I saw you perform in Dallas in 2014, but Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas is on a whole other level. How involved are you all in the process of leveling up the production of your performances? What is that experience like, and how do you tailor your set list and energy for a performance like that?

Ben McKee: I think we've always been playing for venues beyond the size that we were in. Even when we were playing in little bars in Las Vegas, we were always envisioning, we were bringing the energy of an arena show onto the small stages in Vegas back then. But, I think that as we've progressed and written more music, and been able to have more albums, we've been able to take that sort of mentality into the studio. When we're composing, we're picturing those bigger stages now, and we're also able to match the music, the largeness of the music with production value too.

Dan, I know you write thousands of songs. What are some of the factors that dictate whether they become Imagine Dragons songs that the public hears or not?

Dan Reynolds: The process has really always been the same for about 15 years now, which is during our off-cycle time, when we're not on the road – and sometimes even on the road, to be honest – I'm writing, or the guys will send me music that they've been working on, and I'll write off that. Or I'll create something from scratch on my own. That'll go on for a few years, typically between albums. Then, when it comes time to actually put the album together. Every time I complete a song, I'll email it to the guys, so the guys will get an email all the time that just says, “new song” or “new demo,” the name of the song. Everybody will listen to it and send their initial feedback. It's nice because we'll have initial feedback on the first listen, and then over the years, everybody will kind of just listen as they want on their own. Then when it comes time to make the record, everybody will already know whhhh ones stuck with them the best and grew on them, or ones they got tired of quicker, or ones that impacted them the most. Then we'll kind of look at themes and try to understand, “What was the theme during those years? What was I lyrically writing about? What did it mean? How do we tell that story correctly, and what songs do it the best?” Then we just get together and talk, and talk, and bring them into a studio, and then we pull them apart, put them back together, rewrite, and write. We're big editors. We're really into editing. Sometimes the best editing is no editing, and we'll only mess with it a little bit, because we got it right in the beginning, and we'll dress it up and see that it's worse. It's a very collaborative process, and we've done it the same for 15 years now.

How were you guys approached for actually filming, making this a documentary of this performance, and how did that affect you, did you carry yourself any differently on stage, or did it make you think about the show any differently? If you want to start, Wayne?

Dan Reynolds: No. Yeah, it didn't make me approach the show any differently. I don't even know that any of us thought of it, and I'll let the guys speak for themselves on that. But for me, I really did not think on stage, oh, this is being filmed. Every show is filmed. We're in the day and age of YouTube, so everything is always filmed. You know it's going to be out there, and so I think we let go of thinking about that a long time ago, and we just kind of do our thing on stage. I didn't approach it any differently. I don't know about you guys. Wayne Sermon: Yeah, we hadn't really thought too much. I don't think about filming it officially, but I think about a year into doing the tour we just kind of felt really comfortable and we felt like it was something we were more and more proud of. We thought it was probably a good idea to document it somehow, just if nothing, then just for our own sakes, to have an actual polished, good-looking film of it. I think it was surprising how fast it all came together. I mean, I think we gave him four or five days, maybe, before we were like, "Hey, you should come film this in Las Vegas," and then it turned from 2 cameras into 5 cameras into 20 cameras, and into this massive thing. You’re like, “Oh, well!” That’s how we've always been. We fly by the seat of our pants a little bit, and it turned into this incredible thing that we could have never imagined it turned out as good as it did. Ben McKee: Yeah. I'm used to performing in front of cameras and having everything videotaped. The thing that was special to me about this concert [is that] it's rare for all of my family to come out and see a show. My parents were there in the audience, and even some friends from Northern California flew down, so it was really special for me to know that I had a sort of Ben cheering section out there. I really was trying to just make sure I didn't mess it up in front of them, so fortunately we didn't.

I love that you guys had Cirque du Soleil performers. Do you have rehearsal with them?

Dan Reynolds: Just for soundcheck, so the day of. They had kind of listened to the song, come up with ideas that they liked, and we love Cirque du Soleil. We worked with them for many years in music videos and other shows, so we were familiar with their high level of professionalism, and trust them to do what they do best. Then we did a soundcheck and played the song a few times, and they had a whole choreography already put together, and they had the wires. It's always an honor to be on stage with them. We feel, I mean, they're some of the most high-level, most talented performers in the entire world, so it's an honor to share the stage with them, and we just entrust them to do their thing.

What are your favorite songs to perform live?

Dan Reynolds: That changes for me a lot. I would say it changes by night. It depends on the headspace I'm in that day. Sometimes I'm in a moody place, and so a moody song feels fitting, or an angry song, or a happy song, or if you're grieving the loss of a friend, maybe something that's more cathartic in that way. So yeah, every night is different for me, what I feel most affected by. I don't know about you guys. Ben McKee: Yeah, I can totally relate to what Dan is saying, how it changes from night to night. At the moment, and I think pretty consistently, one song that I can't help but get really excited by playing is, I'm so Sorry. It's like even if my neck is sore from some long flight or something, and I'm trying to take it easy on my body, I'm so Sorry comes on, and I find myself jumping up and down, and headbanging, and just making all the physical problems worse. But, the adrenaline of being on stage always pushes it through it. It's always one of those things that you realize the next morning, "Oh, I shouldn't have done that." But, then that night, you get out there and I'm so Sorry starts playing again, and there I am headbanging. Wayne Sermon: Yeah, I'm not sure exactly if I could pick one song. Maybe Thunder, actually, because every once in a while Dan will, before the song starts, he will reach out to, usually it's a younger kid that he asks over the mic. He's like, "Hey, is anyone, is this anyone's first show?" Because, we all remember so distinctly our first show, what a lasting impression that makes on you. So he'll go on the mic and say, "Hey, is this anyone's first show," and then someone will raise their hand and he'll talk to them for a minute, 10, 20 seconds, and just say hi to them, and thank them for coming and all that. That's always kind of fun, just seeing the look on the kid's face, because at my first concert, if the lead singer pointed me out and talked to me, I think that would've been life-changing. That's a fun moment for me, selfishly.

I love that you spoke about representation and wanting fans to feel loved, not just in your connection with them, but in a general sense. How do you each view your roles as allies in spreading positive messages? How has that helped shape the music that you do over the last few years?

Dan Reynolds: Yeah, I think one thing that we all connect on very deeply is inclusion, de-stigmatization of things that we grew up with around us that affected us or affected our family. We really take this responsibility seriously. We've been given this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to touch a lot of people with music, to be on a stage, to travel internationally, to cross boundaries, and countries, and cultures, and languages, and music does that, and it did it for us growing up. We take that really seriously, and I think that's probably our greatest goal as a band, is to bring more inclusion in music, to make concerts feel safe. We want our people to come out and not feel judged. It's a really rare day that there's a fight at an Imagine Dragons concert. That's not the vibe. It's not what, and there's a place where, I'm not saying there shouldn't be shows with pits, and I grew up wanting and expressing myself like that It shows, but that's not what we're looking to do with Imagine Dragons. We're looking to see the kid who felt like they didn't have a place at their school. I think that nothing moves me more than seeing a young kid who you can tell is struggling with mental health. I struggled a lot with depression and anxiety growing up, and I still do. When we see people who are crying, and they're with their parents, and we read letters. That to us is everything. That's what this band is about. That's what we want. We want to create an experience for families, for kids, for anyone who has come to a show where they can feel heard, cry, laugh, feel angry, or grieve the loss of a loved one. That's what Imagine Dragons is about.

Do you each have a most memorable moment from Live in Vegas, and have you already re-watched it to have found it, or do you just remember it?

Dan Reynolds: I do. Maybe I'll go first. While the guys were thinking on that, I was just asked this the other day. There is a part in the show where I go down into the audience, and I always go down these stairs on I Bet My Life, while we're doing this acoustic tech, and I go right, and then I go along the line and get to look at people and touch their hands. It's a really intimate moment in the show. This specific show, I went down and I was trying to go right, and the security stopped me and were trying to push me to go left. I was honestly a little irritated. I was like, "Guys, this is show 100 of the Mercury." I always go, right? It's just like, I don't know if it's my OCD nature or what, but it's just what I always do during that time. But they were blocking me, and so I kind of just was like, all right, I'll go left. I went left and the reason they did that is as I went left, I did, unbeknownst to me, my kids were right there in the front, and particularly my three-year-old Valentine, my little guy. He had his little headphones on, and I look and it took me a minute, and I was like, that's my boy. He was smiling and I grabbed him and held him and he got to sing into the microphone. That was just really emotional for me. Just to get to see him in that setting, that's a really rare thing. Usually, we're on the road and we're away from our family a lot, and so he sang along, "I bet my life," into the microphone. I don't know. That really got me when I watched the documentary for the first time. It made me emotional just because it is hard. We miss our families a lot. We miss a lot of important birthdays. We miss a lot of holidays. There are some parts of this career that are difficult and that impacted me. Ben McKee: Yeah, my moment is sort of similar to Dan's, but reverse the generations. It was the moment when I was on stage and I looked down and I actually was able to find in the crowd where my parents were and where my friends were, some of whom I've known since I was in preschool. It's an incredibly special experience every night on stage to be able to have the opportunity to get up and perform music for people. But when you can look down and see the people that have been with you for your entire life, and see them singing along, and see them being moved by this performance, that was something that really, really got to me. I think I sort of aimed my performance a little bit toward that part of the crowd from that moment on. I don't know if it helped or hurt, but for me, it felt really good inside. Wayne Sermon: Yeah, I think for all of us, it was kind of the same thing, just looking out in the audience and seeing, it was very much a homecoming kind of a show. When I looked out, what I noticed is all the people throughout the 13 years we've been a band, I saw, for instance, our old keyboard player that played with us way back in the day, showed up. I saw promoters that helped us make a little bit of money when we were all living together and eating rice and beans. They would book us for casinos, birthday parties, bar mitzvahs, and whatever. I saw Dan's parents there who basically bed and clothed us for two years and let us rehearse literally in their family room. Not in a basement, not away, but right next to the kitchen. We would just bang away for six hours a day making all kinds of noise, practicing, and recording. They just never complained, actually genuinely liked us being there. It was really touching just to look out, and basically, there's no such thing as a self-made person. That doesn't exist. Anyone who says, "Oh, I made it all on my own," it's just not true. It's always other people along the way that are providing all these opportunities for you. That was really cool to see.
