In Flames is a heavy metal band - formed in 1990. By 2008 they had sold over 2 million records internationally. They have released over ten studio albums.

Jesper Strömblad founded the Swedish group alongside another band he was part of. In 1993, Strömblad decided to dedicate all of his time to In Flames. That same year Glenn Ljungström on guitar and Johan Larsson on bass guitar joined for the first In Flames line up.

Their first album was released in 1994 called 'Lunar Strain'. The trio had to use different singers to help out, as they didn't have a lead vocalist. But in 1995 they got Björn Gelotte to join the band as a drummer, and Anders Fridén as their full time vocalist. The official one-piece metal band was born.

Their music uses harmonized lead guitar melodies and screamed/ growled vocals. On Soundtrack to Your Escape, the band used less guitar melodies so they were able to incorporate more synths, but this seemed to be only a short phase in their music. In Flames' lyrics have varied over the years as well. In some of their releases like 'The Jester Race', they seemed to talk about astrology and mankind. But in later albums such as 'Come Clarity' the band specifically sang about their personal issues and life problems.

In Flames were big influences to many metal bands. Darkest Hour, Slowlife and Trivium are amongst the few that name In Flames as a huge influence on their melodic death metal style.

Live reviews

I guess one could say me being a fan of In Flames all started out with a small Machina movie made about a game called Counter-Strike 1.6. In this movie, a song called "Free Fall" (obviously by IF) made me check out their music and over 10 years listening to IF I've become a hard core fan. I only recently got into checking out my favorite bands live, and having seen about 6 of 20, counting IF, this is the best live show of a metal band I've ever seen. First props goes out to 013 Tilburg for the awesome sound system. It was perfect. Deep bass, lots of treble, nice mid-tones and perfectly tuned. No ringing ears what-so-ever. And then, lemme tell ya, came in the lighting system. Best I have ever seen. They started out with a nice interlude to In Plain View, the curtain dropped as did my, and I assume everyone else's jaws. Brilliant, goosebumps invoking moment right there. Every single band member performed to near perfection, only downside was Anders (the singer, you dope) was a bit under the weather, sweating more than the rest and walking off stage to refresh himself for the next some. No biggy, the man rocked the house. In addition to other bands, Anders talked to the crowd on occasion. They aren't like the mainstream metal bands which I have seen - doin' there songs, payin' there dues, no comment and when it's done, it's done. Money in the bank, bye bye. No, Anders and honestly all members had a real connection with the crowd.

Best part was where Anders told us that filming was totally fine, but they assured us that they sounded lots better live than from a monitor. Totally true btw. One guy was pulled on stage since he profusely kept filming and he was allowed to tape the members doin' the epicness on-stage. Brilliant.

All in all, if IF come to your town or even close (say a range of 150km), pay them a visit as your night will surely be turned upside down, your pants with shiver from the deep bass Iwers produces, you will stand in awe of Gelotte's tight riffs and epic beard, Anders will scream your ears off, Engelin superb guitar play will make you want to play yourself and Svensson's drumming will keep your head bangin' all - night - long.

I have to mention one downside to make it a review, the lighting at times was a bit too much and as a fan of drummers, I was a bit disappointed that I couldn't see Svensson (the drummer) doin' his thing.

Epic show guys! ROCK ON.

Forget what you thought you knew about heavy metal in general, because as In Flames have spent the best part of twenty-five years proving, there actually is such a thing as melodic death metal. It’s commercially viable, too, with the Gothenburg outfit having shifted two million records over the course of their career to date; eleven records in, they’ve carved out a feverishly loyal cult fanbase, and continue to pack out their own shows the world over as well as provide support to some of the biggest bands in metal, too. Dreadlocked vocalist Anders Friden is one of the most recognisable frontmen in the genre, and it’s his energy that’s key to In Flames shows being the high-octane affairs they’ve long been known as. He rarely stays still, stalking the stage with genuine menace and he screeches through the likes of ‘Take This Life’ and ‘Rusted Nail’. Behind him, his four bandmates put on nightly masterclasses in technical proficiency; guitarists Bjorn Gelotte and Niclas Engelin, in particular, are amongst the most naturally-gifted players in metal. With a new record, Siren Charms, set for September, the band have lined up October dates in Manchester, Glasgow and London, as part of a wider European tour.

In Flames are a bizarrely varied live act. Gothenburg metal rockers are one of Sweden's most international rock outfits having sold over two million albums worldwide and the demand for their live show is equally great.

Over their 25 year career they have proved again and again that there is room for the melodic in the genre of metal. The gig sways between aggressive, thrashing renditions of 'Everything's Gone' and 'Fear is the Weakness' to lead singer Anders Fridén single handedly commanding the stage for anthemic singalong to 'Where the Dead Ships Dwell'.

The crowd is supportive either way, whether they are moshing against each other or swaying as one and singing at the top of their lungs. The band never short changes their fans, often playing sets of over twenty tracks in length with fan favourites such as 'The Quiet Place' being aired. A final, staggering rendition of 'Take This Life' has the crowd intently charging the stage as each band member gives 110% to their respective instruments and the applause at the finale are almost as huge.

As always In Flames delivers! Saw them earlier this year at the Filmore in Charlotte NC, but since they are my favorite band, wanted to see them again before they left the US. Loved the setlist and loved seeing them in a more intimate setting. My favorite moment was hearing Wallflower live. Had never heard it played and it is one of my many favorites. Great hearing older tunes, covering decades, like Colony and Behind Space, Where the Dead Ships Dwell and many more, plus songs from the newest CD. Loved the venue too. First time attending a show there, and I was very happy with my experience. Of course I'd be happy anywhere I could see In Flames perform!

With a three man string orchestra slowly playing the tunes of one of their hits, a guy starting a painting on an empty canvas. After that the band enters with one of their many hits, sadly with the mic turned off... after that problem is solved, the rest og the concert is flawless. Mixing acoustic songs and pure In flames style songs. Bringing an entire family up on stage.

At the end of the concert, the painting that was started on is finished, and auctioned away to highest bidder in audience. With the purpose og giving it all to charity.

Just a fantastic experience seeing these guys!

Cannot fault their performance, they played some classics and the customary new stuff which no one knew the words to. The light show was epic, a large LED backdrop with very cool imagery. I do feel a bit bad for them though, being the second warm up band it felt like the energy from the crowd just wasn't there as everyone was waiting for the headline act despite how hard he tried to get audience interaction, at one point you could literally see him get disheartened and give up abounding the end track with "we may be a sinking ship but 'we will always be there'"

Still one of the very best live!

Gr8 show, Anders was very engaging with the crowd and they played 4 old songs from The albums Lunar Strain, Jester Race, Whoracle and Colony!!!

That was unexpected but very welcomed.

They could have done without the songs Truth and This is Our House (not my faves)

The newer members of the band were good and the venue was good as well(you can see the band well from anywhere)

Overall a gr8 show and still a gr8 band(even though they're softer than yesteryear)

Go see 'em!

In Flames, Swedish Death Metal at it’s finest! They’ve been making great metal since the early nineties, it was a rare chance to see this band at such a small personal venue such as Gas Monkey Bar and Grill. They showed a lot of love for their fans, especially since we continued the moshing while it was pouring down rain! If you are a fan of death growls, heavy driving guitar riffs and awesome drumming with the occasional melodic tune, you won’t go wrong with In Flames!

Fantastic song list, with sparkling light show!

The consert is worth visiting!

great show as expected from In Flames. The only bad thing is that it was too short. 7 songs only is nothing and playing at 6pm when people is still on its route for the venue, leaving the place almost empty, it is definitely not so attractive for any band. In Flames deserves absolutely something more! I guess I will go somewhere in Europe in the following months to see them again in one of their full real gig of their tour!

IN FLAMES Announces May 2024 U.S. Tour With GATECREEPER And CREEPING DEATH

Commenting on the tour, IN FLAMES vocalist Anders Fridén says: "We are very excited to have these two killer bands, GATECREEPER and CREEPING DEATH , on this run. I foresee a night of huge riffs, blast beats, headbanging, moshpitting, people losing their minds and more. Come on down, lets have a good time!!!"

GATECREEPER frontman Chase Mason adds: "We are very excited to tour with IN FLAMES . We have been fans for a long time and got the opportunity to meet and play with the band last summer. IN FLAMES is continuing to tour in support of its latest album, "Foregone" , which was released in February 2023 via Nuclear Blast . According to a press release, the LP "combines the greatest aggressive, metallic, and melodic strengths of their landmark records with the seasoned songwriting of their postmodern era."

"Foregone" was the second IN FLAMES album with Paul and drummer Tanner Wayne , the first with ex- MEGADETH guitarist Chris Broderick , and the third with Grammy -winning producer Howard Benson ( MY CHEMICAL ROMANCE , THREE DAYS GRACE ). Mike Plotnikoff ( ALL THAT REMAINS , WARBRINGER ) engineered at Benson 's West Valley Recording Studios . Joe Rickard ( 10 YEARS , STARSET , DIAMANTE ),who played drums for IN FLAMES from 2016 through 2019, handled mixing duties.

Last year, IN FLAMES parted ways with bassist Bryce Paul and replaced him with Liam Wilson ( THE DILLINGER ESCAPE PLAN ).

Wilson made his live debut with IN FLAMES on June 7, 2023 at the Release Athens festival in Athens, Greece.

In a recent interview with Jai That Aussie Metal Guy , Fridén spoke about the evolution of the IN FLAMES sound. He said: "I am aware that not all people follow us from album to album, even though there's a majority that do. And some people don't understand why we're trying this or that. But it's just like… For me as a songwriter or being part of the band, I need to evolve, I need to do something else. I can't just stay in the same place all the time. And that's what I love about music. And that's why I joined a metal band or wanted to be part of a metal band in the beginning because I thought everything was free — you can do whatever the fuck you wanted. It was just later in life I realized, 'Oh, there's all these rules.' I didn't sign up for these rules. Even though I appreciate the people care that much, but I don't wanna be part of those rules. I'm fine with people having rules — 'I'm into this' and 'I only listen to this' — and that's fucking cool. Do whatever you want. But I didn't sign up on those rules. So I wanna do and I wanna take IN FLAMES to a lot of different sonic territories, even though I don't wanna ever lose the sense of melody in writing and so on."

He continued: "I think through all our albums, there's this underlying theme of melody and aggression, even though it appears on every album in slightly different ways. But I really feel we have a sound that you can recognize, which, to me, it's the most important thing. You hear it, 'Oh, that's IN FLAMES .' People don't say, 'Oh, well, that sounds like AC/DC , but it's IN FLAMES .' It is IN FLAMES — no matter what it is, good or bad, whatever, it is IN FLAMES . So, yeah, at the end of the day, it's not going to be an album, a song. It's gonna be, like, we made something out these different chords and it sounds like IN FLAMES and we created a sound that traveled the world, which, to me, it's rewarding to know that."

In Flames announces Latin American Tour

Swedish melodic death giants In Flames have announced a series of Latin American tour dates for 2023 in support of their latest studio album, “Foregone”. So far, the Gothenburg-based band has announced the following dates: Sunday, November 5 – El Teleférico (Quito, Ecuador) Tuesday, November 7 – Teatro Coliseo (Santiago, Chile) Thursday, November 9 – Tokio Marine Hall (Sao Paulo, Brazil) Sunday, November 12 – Peppers Club (San José, Costa Rica)

In Flames recently shared “ The Journey Home”, a documentary about the band’s last European tour and the making of their fourteenth studio album, out since February via Nuclear Blast. With the announcement of the documentary last fall, frontman Anders Fridén released a statement: “ Going into the ‘Foregone’ sessions, we wanted to make a record that was heavily guitar-driven, and that had a strong foundation between the bass and drums. We still approached our songwriting the same way, as we always have, as a juxtaposition between melody and aggression. That’s the DNA of our music. From the lyrical end of things, there was no shortage of inspiration to draw from, especially the concept of time” . “ Humanity as a whole was forced to slow down and take breather. In that break, many of us spent time evaluating and reprioritizing. Time is a constant, but what do we do with it and how we perceive it varies. Especially now looking at where the world seems to be headed faster than ever before. It’s crazy that after everything we are still here and on our fourteenth album. I feel that we’ve found a great balance between the past, the present and the future with ‘Foregone’. This is a new era of  In Flames! “, he added.

NHL Power Rankings 2023-24: Can anyone beat the Dallas Stars?

T he 2023-24  NHL  regular season ends in seven days. Several Stanley Cup contenders are vying for top seeds and favorable playoff matches, while other teams are looking to head into the postseason with a couple of extra wins.

In the regular season’s second-to-last power rankings, let’s see how the NHL landscape has changed in a week, with so many teams playing meaningful games in the final days of their campaigns.

NHL Power Rankings: Draft Lottery Front Runners

According to his  Eliteprospects.com profile , Macklin Celebrini is the No. 1 prospect ahead of the 2024 NHL Draft by 18 scouting experts. As a Hobey Backer nominee, he has led Boston University into the semi-finals of the NCAA Frozen Four.

Tankathon.com  provides NHL Draft Lottery odds .

San Jose Sharks  (25.5%)

Chicago blackhawks (13.5%), anaheim ducks (11.5%), columbus blue jackets (9.5%), montreal canadiens (8.5%), ottawa senators (7.5%), arizona coyotes (6.5%), calgary flames (6.0%), buffalo sabres (5.0%), new jersey devils (3.5%), seattle kraken (3.0%), philadelphia flyers (n/a), minnesota wild (n/a).

NHL Power Rankings: Playoff Longshots

Although the following teams are not mathematically eliminated from the qualifying for the Stanley Cup playoffs, many dominos have to fall in their favor to punch their postseason tickets.

Moneypuck.com  provides NHL playoff odds.

St. Louis Blues – 89 points (0.3%)

Philadelphia flyers – 83 points (6.4%), detroit red wings – 84 points (24.3%), pittsburgh penguins – 84 points (42.4%), nhl power rankings: top 16.

There’s only one week left in the NHL season, and only four playoff spots are available to clinch. Additionally, not a single postseason seed has been confirmed, with nine teams within four points of one another to determine final seedings. With 58 games left, hockey fans will be in for a wild ride in the next seven days.

The statistics for the last ten games were obtained from  NHL.com .

Florida Panthers (4-4-2)

The Florida Panthers are still in contention for the Atlantic Division title despite going 9-8-2 since the beginning of March, which included a four-game losing streak. Last season’s Eastern Conference champions have a much more favorable playoff position this season and will be a tough team to play in the postseason as they want to finish the story in 2024.

Washington Capitals (4-4-2)

Many felt the Washington Capitals had no chance a couple of months ago until Alex Ovechkin regained his scoring touch, collecting 30 goals for the 18th time to  set a new NHL record . After beginning March with a 9-4-0 record, they went on an untimely six-game losing streak, which kept them stuck in an intense wildcard race with four other teams.

Winnipeg Jets (4-5-1)

The Winnipeg Jets were once the top team in the NHL. They’ve stumbled to third place in the Central Division, yet they remain only two points back of the Colorado Avalanche. Right now, the Jets are on a four-game win streak after dropping six straight to end March. Unfortunately, their final four games, with matchups against three of the top teams in the Western Conference, will not do them any favors.

Nashville Predators (5-4-1)

The Nashville Predators have been entrenched in the top wildcard spot in the Western Conference for quite some time now, meaning the franchise will be heading to the postseason for the first time since 2021-22. One of the most exciting things to watch in their final three games will be whether Filip Forsberg breaks the team record for most goals in a season, a milestone he currently shares with 43.

Vancouver Canucks (5-4-1)

The Vancouver Canucks have sat atop of the Pacific Division for most of the regular season. However, their top spot is in jeopardy, with the Edmonton Oilers pressing and sitting four points behind with two games in hand. Interestingly, these two clubs meet on Saturday night in one of the must-watch final games of the season.

Related:  10 must-watch NHL games in final weeks of 2023-24 season

Colorado Avalanche (5-4-1)

The Colorado Avalanche have a comfortable spot as the second seed in the Central Division and will only repeat as divisional champions if they win their remaining games and the Dallas Stars lose three straight. As Nathan MacKinnon continues his  quest to win the Art Ross , the Avalanche can’t take a night off with the Jets nipping at their heels.

Boston Bruins (6-4-0)

The Boston Bruins would love to win the Atlantic Division, holding a slim lead over the Panthers. They must win their final three games to secure the second seed in the Eastern Conference. The fanbase would push for them to win the Presidents’ Trophy. However, it was a short first-round playoff exit when they won last season, so the burden of being the NHL’s best team may not be worth it in the long run.

Los Angeles Kings (6-4-0)

The Los Angeles Kings keep hanging around and are winning just enough games to keep themselves out of the wildcard race. As the current third seed in the Pacific Division, they are on a collision course to meet the Oilers for the third straight postseason. Based on their recent history, the Kings have won five games in the past two meetings.

Vegas Golden Knights (6-3-1)

The Vegas Golden Knights may have gone 6-3-1 in their past 10 games, but they are reeling in an ugly three-game losing streak, getting doubled-up by opponents 16-8 on the scoreboard. They had a chance to scare the Oilers, a potential first-round opponent, but posed no threat on Wednesday night. As the defending champions limp into the playoffs, it could be an early offseason unless the reinforcements come.

Edmonton Oilers (6-3-1)

The Oilers dismantled the Golden Knights on Wednesday night  without Connor McDavid , sitting out with a lower-body injury. Unfortunately, missing time prevents him from continuing his quest to win his fourth Art Ross Trophy. But, as great as it would be to win individual awards, the goal for the Oilers is to win the Stanley Cup, so keeping McDavid healthy should be the priority.

Toronto Maple Leafs (7-3-0)

The Toronto Maple Leafs could catch the Panthers in the Atlantic Division and secure home ice in their upcoming playoff series. However, all eyes will be on Auston Matthews, who is just four goals away from scoring 70, becoming the first skater since 1992-93 to reach the milestone. Like the Oilers, the goal is the Stanley Cup, which means remaining healthy and not developing bad habits, so chasing records is crucial in the final games.

New York Islanders (7-3-0)

Last week, the New York Islanders were not in the top 16, sitting outside the playoff picture. But they are one of the hottest teams in the NHL right now with a five-game win streak, including an intense victory over the  New York Rangers  on Tuesday. These two rivals meet again on Saturday in what could be one of the most anticipated games left on the schedule.

Tampa Bay Lightning (7-2-1)

The Tampa Bay Lightning, led by Nikita Kucherov, continues to pace the scoring race and is one point shy of 140. Considering he’s had 12 points in the last four games, it’s not impossible to think he could become only the 7th player in NHL history to reach 150 points. Meanwhile, loaded with veterans, the Lightning are one of the most feared teams heading into the Stanley Cup playoffs.

Carolina Hurricanes (7-2-1)

Last week, the Carolina Hurricanes had a clunker against the Bruins but kept pace with the Rangers by getting their revenge on Boston this past Tuesday. As one of the deepest teams in the league, the Hurricanes have yet to get past the Eastern Conference Final, but 2023-24 feels different, as they are one of the first teams with 50 wins.

New York Rangers (8-2-0)

The Rangers tied a franchise record for wins (53) and remain the favorites to win the Presidents’ Trophy for the fourth time. Interestingly, the last time New York was the NHL’s top team, 2014-15, they lost in the Eastern Conference Final. No Presidents’ Trophy winner has captured the Stanley Cup in the same season since the Chicago Blackhawks in 2012-13.

Related: Breaking down Chris Kreider’s 302 goals with Rangers

Dallas Stars (9-1-0)

It may have taken all season, but  now everyone talks about  the Dallas Stars as the team to beat. Even though they are one point behind the Rangers for the top spot in the NHL, their lineup is one of the most balanced, making them one of the toughest outs every night. Despite not boasting any true superstars like McDavid or Kucherov, this veteran team will look to get back to the Stanley Cup Final, last advancing to the championship series in 2020.

MOSCOW (AP) — Assailants burst into a large concert hall in Moscow on Friday and sprayed the crowd with gunfire, killing over 60 people, injuring more than 100 and setting fire to the venue in a brazen attack just days after President Vladimir Putin cemented his grip on power in a highly orchestrated electoral landslide.

The Islamic State group claimed responsibility for the attack in a statement posted on affiliated channels on social media. A U.S. intelligence official told The Associated Press that U.S. intelligence agencies had learned the group’s branch in Afghanistan was planning an attack in Moscow and shared the information with Russian officials.

It wasn’t immediately clear what happened to the attackers after the raid, which state investigators were investigating as terrorism.

The attack, which left the concert hall in flames with a collapsing roof, was the deadliest in Russia in years and came as the country’s war in Ukraine dragged into a third year. Moscow Mayor Sergei Sobyanin called the raid a “huge tragedy.”

The Kremlin said Putin was informed minutes after the assailants burst into Crocus City Hall, a large music venue on Moscow’s western edge that can accommodate 6,200 people.

The attack took place as crowds gathered for a performance by the Russian rock band Picnic. The Investigative Committee, the top state criminal investigation agency, reported early Saturday that more than 60 people were killed. Health authorities released a list of 145 injured — 115 of them hospitalized, including five children.

Some Russian news reports suggested more victims could have been trapped by the blaze that erupted after the assailants threw explosives.

Video showed the building on fire, with a huge cloud of smoke rising through the night sky. The street was lit up by the blinking blue lights of dozens of firetrucks, ambulances and other emergency vehicles, as fire helicopters buzzed overhead to dump water on the blaze that took hours to contain.

The prosecutor’s office said several men in combat fatigues entered the concert hall and fired on concertgoers.

Dave Primov, who was in the hall during the attack, described panic and chaos when the attack began.

“There were volleys of gunfire,” Primov told the AP. “We all got up and tried to move toward the aisles. People began to panic, started to run and collided with each other. Some fell down and others trampled on them.”

Videos posted by Russian media and on messaging app channels showed men toting assault rifles shooting screaming people at point-blank range. One video showed a man in the auditorium saying the assailants had set it on fire, as gunshots rang out incessantly.

Guards at the concert hall didn’t have guns, and some could have been killed at the start of the attack, Russian media reported. Some Russian news outlets suggested the assailants fled before special forces and riot police arrived. Reports said police patrols were looking for several vehicles the attackers could have used to escape.

In a statement posted by its Aamaq news agency, the Islamic State group said it attacked a large gathering of “Christians” in Krasnogorsk on Moscow’s outskirts, killing and wounding hundreds. It was not immediately possible to verify the authenticity of the claim.

However, U.S. intelligence officials confirmed the claim by the Islamic State group’s branch based in Afghanistan that it was responsible for the Moscow attack, a U.S. official told the AP.

The official said U.S. intelligence agencies had gathered information in recent weeks that the IS branch was planning an attack in Moscow. He said U.S. officials privately shared the intelligence earlier this month with Russian officials. The official was briefed on the matter but was not authorized to publicly discuss the intelligence information and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

Noting that the IS statement cast its claim as an attack targeting Christians, Aymenn Jawad al-Tamimi, an expert on the terrorist group, said it appeared to reflect the group’s strategy of “striking wherever they can as part of a global ‘fight the infidels and apostates everywhere.’”

In October 2015, a bomb planted by IS downed a Russian passenger plane over Sinai, killing all 224 people on board, most of them Russian vacation-goers returning from Egypt. The group, which operates mainly in Syria and Iraq but also in Afghanistan and Africa, also has claimed several attacks in Russia’s volatile Caucasus and other regions in the past years. It recruited fighters from Russia and other parts of former Soviet Union.

On March 7, Russia’s top security agency said it thwarted an attack on a synagogue in Moscow by an Islamic State cell, killing several of its members in the Kaluga region near the Russian capital. A few days earlier, Russian authorities said six alleged IS members were killed in a shootout in Ingushetia in Russia’s Caucasus region.

On Friday, statements of outrage, shock and support for those affected by the concert call attack streamed in from around the world.

Some commentators on Russian social media questioned how authorities, who relentlessly surveil and pressure Kremlin critics, failed to identify the threat and prevent the attack.

Russian officials said security was tightened at Moscow’s airports, railway stations and the capital’s sprawling subway system. Moscow’s mayor canceled all mass gatherings, and theaters and museums shut for the weekend. Other Russian regions also tightened security.

The Kremlin didn’t immediately blame anyone for the attack, but some Russian lawmakers were quick to accuse Ukraine and called for ramping up strikes. Hours before the attack, the Russian military l aunched a sweeping barrage on Ukraine’s power system, crippling the country’s biggest hydroelectric plant and other energy facilities and leaving more than a million people without electricity.

Dmitry Medvedev, deputy head of Russia’s Security Council, said that if Ukraine involvement was proven, all those involved “must be tracked down and killed without mercy, including officials of the state that committed such outrage.”

Mykhailo Podolyak, an adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, denied Ukraine involvement.

“Ukraine has never resorted to the use of terrorist methods,” he posted on X. “Everything in this war will be decided only on the battlefield.”

John Kirby, spokesman for the White House National Security Council, said he couldn’t yet speak about the details but “the images are just horrible. And just hard to watch.”

Friday’s attack followed a statement earlier this month by the U.S. Embassy in Moscow that urged Americans to avoid crowded places in view of “imminent” plans by extremists to target large gatherings in the Russian capital, including concerts. The warning was repeated by several other Western embassies.

National Security Council spokesperson Adrienne Watson said Friday the U.S. government had information about a planned attack in Moscow, prompting the State Department advisory to Americans. The U.S. government shared the information with Russian authorities in accordance with its longstanding “duty to warn” policy, Watson said.

Putin, who extended his grip on Russia for another six years in this week’s presidential vote after a sweeping crackdown on dissent, denounced the Western warnings as an attempt to intimidate Russians. “All that resembles open blackmail and an attempt to frighten and destabilize our society,” he said earlier this week.

Russia was shaken by a series of deadly terror attacks in the early 2000s during the fighting with separatists in the Russian province of Chechnya.

In October 2002, Chechen militants took about 800 people hostage at a Moscow theater. Two days later, Russian special forces stormed the building and 129 hostages and 41 Chechen fighters died, most from effects of narcotic gas Russian forces use to subdue the attackers.

In September 2004, about 30 Chechen militants seized a school in Beslan in southern Russia taking hundreds of hostages. The siege ended in a bloodbath two days later and more than 330 people, about half of them children, were killed.

Associate Press writer Michael Balsamo in Washington contributed to this report.

What went wrong with the Calgary Flames in 2023-24? A sell-off and lack of star power

ST. LOUIS, MO - MARCH 28: Dustin Wolf #32 of the Calgary Flames looks back after giving up a goal to Zack Bolduc #76 of the St. Louis Blues on March 28, 2024 at the Enterprise Center in St. Louis, Missouri. (Photo by Scott Rovak/NHLI via Getty Images)

The Calgary Flames needed a spark after a disappointing 2022-23 season after falling short of the playoffs by just three points.

There wasn’t a drastic roster overhaul, though. Instead, a refreshed front office and coaching staff bet on bounce-back performances and systematic tweaks to get this team back on track.

Midway through the season, it was clear that wasn’t going to be enough to contend. When the Flames entered February sitting 12th in the Western Conference, management started the selling process with the team’s pending free agents.

Unlike last season, Calgary took themselves out of the dreaded middle. The Flames may not be basement dwellers, but the bottom third of the league likely isn’t what the team envisioned going into the season. So what went wrong in Calgary this year?

What were the chances?

The Flames were far from a playoff lock, but at 71 percent, they certainly should’ve been a lot closer than they ended up being. Calgary was forecasted for around 97 points and is currently on pace for only 79 — in the fifth percentile of what was expected.

Of course, there’s a caveat to all that: trading away Elias Lindholm , Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev . While that possibility was expected at the time, it’s not a possibility that was explicitly included in Calgary’s projection. On deadline day, the Flames were on pace for 87 points. Going 3-11-0 since played a role in the team’s final record in a way that was expected, but not accounted for.

But even if the Flames never traded anyone, the team was still far away from the solid playoff hope that was projected of them. We expected a bounce-back from last season’s disappointment, but that disappointment just ended up being who they were all along.

What’s the Big Answer?

Can Jonathan Huberdeau bounce back?

The bounce-back performances the Flames’ chances hinged on started at the top of their lineup with Jonathan Huberdeau .

Huberdeau was the silver lining of an otherwise disastrous offseason in Calgary in 2022. But his first season with the Flames was an outright failure. It wasn’t just a matter of bad puck luck. The winger’s offensive strengths and puck-moving took a huge hit, leading to a 60-point drop from his career year in 2021-22, before his massive eight-year extension carrying a $10.5 million contract kicked in.

On the surface, this season doesn’t look to be anywhere near a bounce-back. Scoring at a rate of 2.2 points per 60 isn’t just worse from last year or half of Huberdeau’s career year, but overall below average relative to the rest of his career. And his Net Rating is minus-six below his projected value heading into the season because of that stunted offense. That does not scream $10.5 million caliber, or anywhere near the levels of that last season in Florida.

in flames tour 2023

But there have been shades of the real Huberdeau, especially in the second half of the season despite management chipping away at the roster. He has picked up his scoring in the second half and has brought a spark to the power play. At five-on-five, he is entering the zone at a higher pace than last year, which is key on a team without a ton of puck-movers up front. And unlike last season, he has helped boost the Flames’ expected goal generation in his minutes relative to his teammates.

It’s a step forward when the Flames need strides from the player they brought in to be The Guy in Calgary. Franchise caliber may not be realistic, or matching that $10.5 million cap hit. But Huberdeau can truly bounce back next year if he builds off this second-half progress, and brings more consistent high-end skill next season.

Which direction did the wild card land?

Will a change in coaching help this team generate offense?

On a team level, the answer is a resounding no. At five-on-five, the Flames scored 2.5 goals per 60 (down from 2.8), and generated 2.6 expected goals per 60 (down from 3.0). They went from a top 10 team in both facets to a below-average one on the cusp of the league’s bottom 10. It was the same thing on the power play where the Flames scored one fewer goal per 60, pushing them down to 27th with 6.1.

Some folks may point to the team’s personnel as being the issue here, but the talent available to Ryan Huska wasn’t that different from what Darryl Sutter had at his disposal the year prior. Sutter got a lot more out of this team. A lot more. That’s especially true given the fact that the team’s defense also got worse in the process. The Flames didn’t sacrifice offense for some other greater good — they were just a bad team that didn’t have the puck nearly as much.

The season wasn’t a total disaster though on the offense front if looked at as a tale of two halves. One of the main goals of the year was getting The Real Jonathan Huberdeau back, and while that was a tall order that started incredibly slow, Huberdeau seemed to finally hit his stride in the second half. There, he scored 32 points in 39 games led mostly by a Flames power play that finally started to figure things out. From January onward, the team scored 8.2 goals per 60 with the man advantage, good for 13th with a solid underlying process to boot.

That wasn’t enough to save the season, but it is a silver lining for next year if they can consistently produce at that level with the man advantage. The slow first-half start in that realm shouldn’t be forgotten either.

Did they live up to their strengths?

It would be a lot easier to say the refreshed vibe made a direct impact if the results were different this season in Calgary — whether that meant a noticeable uptick in offensive creation or more rebounds up and down the lineup.

At the very least, there seems to be a culture shift and a more proactive approach higher up. The Flames moving out pending free agents despite not being completely out of the playoff picture represents that, which should help this team in the long run instead of staying in the race and being destined to finish in the middle again.

On the ice, the Flames were expected to have some roster holes at the top of their lineup. But their supporting cast led by Nazem Kadri and Andrew Mangiapane were expected to help counter that.

Kadri has been better than expected, improving his projected Net Rating by plus-three. He has stepped it up from last year with more primary production, some of which stems from his puck-moving play. Ideally, a second-line center isn’t a team’s leading scorer, but he has been a steady source of scoring that is needed.

Mangiapane, on the other hand, was still relatively underwhelming. He recovered fewer pucks and was less effective in transition when the Flames needed him to add some two-way pop to their forward group.

Most of the bottom six fell flat this season, too. The Jakob Pelletier injury only strained them further. But mid-season call-ups like Connor Zary and Martin Pospisil have helped pick up some of the slack and become mainstays in the lineup.

The forward group was always expected to be flawed this season, but their blue line provided reason for optimism. Noah Hanifin and Chris Tanev both brought that throughout the season, leaving even bigger holes when they departed closer to the deadline. That only put more emphasis on defenders who have struggled throughout the year, like Rasmus Andersson . He was expected to be one of the leaders on this blue line, but slipped on both ends of the ice, sinking his projected Net Rating by minus-nine.

Were they overwhelmed by their weaknesses?

The big story for Calgary for the last two seasons has been its lack of genuine star power. Losing Matthew Tkachuk and Johnny Gaudreau in one offseason was a serious blow and the ramifications still linger.

The Flames did not have a top duo on the team capable of leading the charge, creating an immediately difficult starting point. That was supposed to be Huberdeau and Lindholm, but neither could cut it. While others, namely Kadri, stepped up to fill the void, what they managed still wasn’t at the level that’s expected of a playoff team’s top forward. It’s great that Kadri bounced back to score at a 70-point rate. It’s not so great that it’s the best anyone on this team can offer. There were 25 teams whose leading scorer eclipsed Kadri’s pace and the average for a playoff team was a 104-point pace. Only one playoff team, Winnipeg , had its leading scorer below an 80-point pace.

To Calgary’s credit, the team did have some capable depth scoring afterward thanks to Yegor Sharangovich and Blake Coleman stepping up. But again, it just wasn’t to the level that’s expected of a playoff team.

in flames tour 2023

Jacob Markstrom , who was undoubtedly the team’s MVP this season, mitigated the Flames’ below-average offense. He was expected to be a slightly below-average starter this season, but instead ended up being one of the league’s very best. According to Evolving Hockey, he saved 28.7 goals above expected this season, the second-best mark behind Connor Hellebuyck .

Calgary turning a potential weakness into a strength really hammers home just how poorly everything else went. If not for Markstrom playing at his peak level, this season might have been an even larger disaster.

Word from the beat

The Flames opened their season with just two wins in their first 10 games. Their power play experienced numerous struggles under Marc Savard, who thought he had a top-five power play on paper during training camp. Huberdeau went nearly an entire month without a point. Calgary’s inability to consistently defeat lowly teams like Chicago and San Jose ultimately undid their work against stronger, quality teams throughout the year. But even against those teams hovering above them, the Flames’ lack of game-breakers proved to be an issue.

GM Craig Conroy spent much of the season offloading pending UFAs Hanifin, Tanev, Lindholm and Nikita Zadorov . The Flames got volume when you analyze their returns, but patience may be required to see how the quality will fare for their long-term plans. Markstrom’s name floated in trade speculation and he let it be known that he was displeased. It remains to be seen if he’ll return next season.

There were some silver linings. The Flames benefitted from a rebound season for Markstrom and got career seasons from MacKenzie Weegar , Yegor Sharangovich and Blake Coleman. They even incorporated young players like Zary and Pospisil while easing in prospects like Matthew Coronato and Dustin Wolf . Oliver Kylington also returned after a lengthy, personal absence.

But despite the positives, the Flames have become a team in transition with few veterans remaining from their 2021-22 roster that bore so much promise until Connor McDavid and the Edmonton Oilers had their say. The Flames have their work cut out for them if they want to emerge as a contender in a few seasons. — Julian McKenzie

The bottom line

For a lot of teams in this series, this is the part where we talk about them hitting their worst-case scenario. That’s not the case for the Flames — for them that was clinging to mediocrity with a core that wasn’t good enough to contend.

After a very slow start, there was no doubt remaining on that front. Any lingering optimism was fully extinguished and the right path was laid out for them, plain to see. That meant moving those pending free agents rather than extending them which led to more losses to cement a better draft position.

“What went wrong” for the Flames is ultimately a tale of what went right. It might’ve been hard to come to terms with making the right decisions toward Calgary’s long-term future if things went right instead in the short term. Another failure of a season instead gave the Flames no choice but to make the best choice for their future.
