Between 1870 and 1950, agriculture was a big part of the island’s economy with crops such as sugarcane, coffee, plantains, bananas, and even cocoa. Unfortunately, farming has died to almost nothing over the last decade or so. We now import 80% of our food. While visiting this farm, we will be walking throughout the larger parts of the farm to learn about farming practices, from the seed to the final product.

I can remember growing up in Puerto Rico and going to my grandmother’s home/farm and seeing all of those things that she did to eat, clean, and take care of her home and farm and supply her family. Today, I will walk with you through Mr. Don Luis farm (my uncle) showing you everything there is to know, so you will come out knowing how it was growing up in Puerto Rico during the 30’s. My childhood will be brought to you in living color. When we are done at the farm I will then take you to a local restaurant, located in the mountains to eat and enjoy the food of the things that we saw and learned at the farm but also to teach you about the food we have been eating here for over a century. (price of meal not included in price of tour)

Get a Glimpse into our Dairy Industry at Martinez Dairy

Tours available, Call or text for reservation. .

Agrotourism is a very popular trend right now, and I love it! I get excited any time that I can see “behind the scenes” of something. And then add animals into the mix, and I can’t stay away! Martinez Dairy offers tours of their facilities, with an explanation of dairy farming from start to finish. It is a really interesting and informational tour, and there are calves to feed and take pictures with. We really enjoyed our visit, and I am sure you will too.

Martinez Dairy ( Vaquería Martinez ) is a small, working dairy located in the town of Vega Baja, on the north coast of Puerto Rico. It is a family-run business, on it’s third generation, started around 40 years ago by the grandfather of the 2 brothers who run it today. The farm is about 100 acres of rolling green hills, and they have roughly 100 producing cows. This is a great tour for anyone interested in the industry, or even if you just want to see and feed cows!

Vaquería Martinez Dairy

Just so you know up-front: This tour is in Spanish. They have future plans for bilingual tours, but they are not quite to that point yet. For now, they will try to work with you if you need English translation- call them before assuming they can do it for you. .

The tour starts at the covered seating area, where you sign in. This is a small, working farm, and the tours are given by the owners. They started by telling us about their own farm, who they are, the size of their dairy, and their production volume. They went on to talk about the dairy business in Puerto Rico, how many farms there are, how much they all produce, and the names of the milk processors.

They explained that all fresh milk sold in Puerto Rico is produced locally, and that it is more expensive (as compared to the States) because cows in the tropics produce less milk (due to the heat), and the feed for the herd needs to be imported. Those things add up.

Vaquería Martinez Dairy

After this short, basic introduction, we took a short walk to see some of their calves. They explain why the calves are kept in these special cages and not with their mothers. They explain the care the babies get, the food they eat, their time line. It takes around 2 years before a cow has it’s first baby and starts producing milk!

There are calves of all ages, kept close to home for safety reasons. Once they are old enough, they can go out to pasture to eat fresh grass to their heart’s content. They explained the types of food/grasses they feed the cows, how they keep them healthy and happy, and how cows process their food. They handed out grass for people to feed the young cows that were in this area. You could pet them and take photos. Really cute. The kids loved it.

Vaquería Martinez Dairy

They talked about the two types of cows they have on their farm, and the differences between them. It is interesting to see how much larger a Holstein is from the little brown Jersey cows. The farm has mostly Holsteins (they produce more milk), but you will see some Jerseys (they produce milk with a higher fat content).

They also explain the process of reproduction. Dairy is big business … nothing is left to chance. Gotta love the big book of available bull semen to can pick from! They explained artificial insemination, and the cycle of pregnancy for the cows to produce milk and continue to produce milk (usually about 1 birth/year for 4-5 years).

Vaquería Martinez Dairy

They explained the milking process, they have a small, 4-cows-at-a-time machine that milks them. They showed us the process with 2 very eager cows (they get fed while being milked, so they seem to like it!). They also explained what happens to the milk, and its timetable and testing requirements. All along the way, they answered everyone’s questions. I really enjoyed it, and learned a lot. There is a lot involved in your glass of milk!

Vaquería Martinez Dairy

Check their Facebook page for current cost. Was $15 for adult, $12 kids, kids under 3 are free

Inside Italy’s Orient Express La Dolce Vita Train

Later this year, a new luxury train will begin service in Italy—but it will feel like a journey into the past. Most departures will leave from Rome and the one- or two-day trips can include cities such as Milan, Florence, and Venice, as well as Sicily, via the only passenger rail ferry in the world.

A Guide to Puerto Rico’s Best Golf Courses

Here’s what you need to know about the airlines’ dynamic pricing —and how to keep fares down to earth.

Having won back-to-back Super Bowls with the Kansas City Chiefs, quarterback Patrick Mahomes and tight end Travis Kelce have a new game plan—opening an upscale steakhouse. Developed with the Noble 33 hospitality group, 1587 Prime —the name is a combination of the players’ jersey numbers—is expected to open at the Loews Kansas City hotel, but anyone hoping for a Taylor Swift sighting will have to wait a while. It took us about three hours to get there and two on the way back. The tour stops at a hot springs to break up the drive which is a nice break. The springs are small - just two pools but very well kept. The included taco dinner is good and very close to where you catch the boat. The boat captains were great and the boat ride fun. The real star is of course the bioluminescence. You get to swim in the bay for about 45 mins. It seems a little crazy to drive 5 hours for a 45 min swim but it’s worth it. Cruz is an excellent tour guide, highly knowledgeable and engaging. He ensures you have a great experience. You start the day with a van ride to the hot springs. Hot springs break up the drive but are not the highlight of trip. After getting back on can you have about 1 hour to dinner in La Parguera. The fish tacos were excellent. Then the real show begins. You board boats and head to the Caracoles sand bar for sunset. Swam around with fishes for about an hour during sunset. Then off to the bio bay where Captain Frank explains the Bio bays and another ~1hr of swimming. It’s truly breathtaking watching the water light up as you kick around. • Kimberly F 0 contributions 4.0 of 5 bubbles Rainy but still a great experience! A once in a lifetime experience. The hot springs were delightful and swimming in the bay was magical. The fish tacos for dinner were awesome and the guide made sure everyone was taken care of. The weather was rainy and gloomy so we didn't get to see the magic of the Caribbean side of PR in its glory and while we stopped at a sandbar to see the sunset, there was not a sunset sadly. I bet it would have been great... I do feel like we missed out on the full experience due to the weather. The boat ride wasn't nearly as enjoyable with the cold and rain. However the bioluminescent bay made the entire trip worth it... Easily one of the coolest things we have ever done. The captain also made sure my in laws were able to play in the water from the boat as they are not swimmers and made my 11 year old daughter comfortable as well with a swimming noodle. Although we didn’t swim, ( don’t know how because of water phobia) we had a great time experiencing the bioluminescent effect. My son sat by the edge and moved his legs to see the glow. The dark sky was perfect. The captain - Frank knew exactly where to go. Victor our tour guide was everything for us. It was like a private tour since there were only 5 people. The bio bay was amazing to see and we also saw the moonrise which was a blast. The fish tacos are must-haves - they are so good. The sandy bar that we went to the first time was amazing too. Tour guides are knowledgeable about the bio bay and fun. We had a great time! We also went on the cave exploration with them - another fantastic experience to see how the nature works.
