What types of walking & hiking trips does Intrepid offer?

We have two main styles of walking & trekking trips:

Center-based – on a center-based trip, you'll be based in the center of the action, meaning you can enjoy the comfort of the same room every day (as well as only unpacking once) and the best restaurants and attractions in the area. Think Chamonix in the French Alps, Dobbiaco in the Dolomites or a rustic hotel in Yosemite Valley. We'll pick the best walks and hikes available either directly from your accommodation or just a short bus or train ride away. To put it bluntly – you'll be fairly comfortable while experiencing the best trails going 'round.

Point-to-point – on a point-to-point trip, you'll start in A and finish in B. We'll walk from one place to the other pretty much every day. However, we do throw in a rest day every now and then depending on the region and the miles we need to cover. Point-to-point treks include the Inca Trail, Mount Everest Base Camp, Hadrian’s Wall and the Mont Blanc Circuit. In most cases, we'll transfer your main luggage across to the next destination, so all you need to carry is the essentials (water, sun protection, waterproofs, extra layers, snacks, etc.).

What's included in a walking & trekking trip?

We include accommodation as per the itinerary, as well as transportation to and from trailheads and to all other included activities (note: we often use public transport to mingle with the locals and get a feel for local life). We also include all hiking permits, whether it's in the Himalayas or US National Parks. On top of that, we provide highly qualified, experienced and passionate local leaders to guide you throughout the trip.

How fit do I need to be to join a walking & trekking trip?

Our trips span the gamut of active adventures from relatively easy, leisurely walks to multi-day treks in high mountains. But no matter what degree of difficulty or distance you choose, we recommend that you have a reasonable level of fitness to ensure you get the most out of your trip. Try to commit to some type of physical training program for a couple of before you depart.

Here are some suggestions:

  • Long walks: go on regular 3-6 hour walks wearing the boots you’re taking and carrying a small backpack to get comfortable with carrying your gear for long stretches
  • Aerobic exercise: running, distance cycling and other aerobic classes at gyms (like pump, spin, zumba and circuit classes) are good for boosting your fitness and stamina
  • Strength training: doing body weight training like pushups, squats, dips, lunges, etc. helps to build up your strength, which is needed for steady mountain climbs (bootcamp sessions are perfect for this type of training)

What should I pack for a walking trip in North America?

It depends on where you're going, what the weather will be like and how difficult the walk that you plan to do is. Generally, it's a good idea to ensure you have the following essentials:

  • Comfortable walking shoes (make sure they're broken in if you buy a new pair!)
  • Backpack/day bag
  • Leggings, shorts or hiking pants
  • A loose, long-sleeved shirt
  • Sweater or sweatshirt
  • Retractable walking poles
  • Reusable water bottle

9 Best Travel Companies for Walking Tours and Hiking Tours in 2024

Enjoy some of the world's most beautiful landscapes at the speed of your own two feet..

Beth Luberecki

Review: EF Go Ahead’s Food & Wine: Piedmont & Tuscany with America’s Test Kitchen

There’s something extra special about seeing someplace on foot the way you do on a walking tour, hiking tour, or guided trek. Maybe it’s the slower pace and the ability to actually admire sights you might just zip by in a car, bus, or train. Maybe it’s the easy opportunity for connections and conversations with local people. Or maybe it’s being out in the fresh air, enjoying and appreciating the natural setting of the location you’re visiting.

It’s probably some combination of all three that make walking tours, trekking tours, and hiking tours a popular way to travel. Whether you prefer an easygoing amble, a moderate hike, or a challenging summit, there are some great foot-fueled tours from hiking tour companies that explore famous locales and off-the-beaten-path spots all over the world. Here are my picks for the nine best travel companies offering walking tours and guided hiking trips.

Charles Bridge in Prague, Czech Republic

Walk the world’s greatest cities

Some cities are made for walking, and our guided walking tours will take you strolling along the most famous streets like the Champs-Élysées in Paris, the Las Vegas Strip and Edinburgh's Royal Mile. We’ll also show you the hidden gems, like the secret corners of Rome, the enchanting lanes of Prague and the back alleys of Melbourne that only the locals know.

People admiring the Yellowstone Caldera, USA

Stretch your legs in nature

Taking a walk in nature is good for the soul, and there’s nothing better than getting up close with all the beautiful corners of our planet. Our walking vacations will have you exploring the canyons and hot springs of Yellowstone on foot, take a guided walk through an Irish farm and its world-famous Japanese Gardens, or wander along the Lakeshore Trail of Banff National Park to come face to face with the magic of Lake Louise, the ‘Jewel of the Rockies’.

Lion's Head mountain by sunset in Cape Town, South Africa

Guided hiking vacations

If you’re up for something a little more challenging, our guided hikes will take you exploring through some of the world’s most spectacular landscapes. Embark on the Lions Head Sunset Hike with a local guide for incredible views of Cape Town and Table Mountain, take a hike through unspoiled rainforest to see the ‘Fjord of Last Hope’ in Chilean Patagonia, or hike to stunning overlooks in Canyonlands National Park.

All you need to know about Walking Vacations

What to pack for a hiking vacation.

The most important thing to pack for a hiking vacation is a comfortable backpack, breathable layered clothing, sturdy shoes and thick hiking socks. You'll also need a reusable water bottle, a hat, sunscreen, sunglasses and snacks. Don't forget to bring your camera and some extra SD cards to capture all that beauty you'll see on your hike.

Where should you go on a walking vacation in Europe?

Europe’s gorgeous cities are perfect for a walking vacation and you can hit the streets from the Latin Quarter of Paris to the historic sights of Berlin. Wander across the famous bridges of Prague, ramble through the ancient squares of Rome, and marvel at the scenery as you stroll through Salzburg.

Where is the best hiking in the world?

When you think of hiking, you can’t go past the iconic destinations like the national parks of the USA and Canada, the wild landscapes of Patagonia, the Scottish Highlands, and the stunning trails of New Zealand, Scandinavia and Nepal. We also love hiking around world wonders like Peru’s Machu Picchu and the Great Wall of China.

What travelers say about WalknTours

"We used this in Charleston and Salem, and we LOVE it.  Will never go back to a normal tour again!

Highly recommend."

Haley - Salem and Charleston

“Great historical easy walk for all. The directions and app were easy to use. I love the ability to take your time to stop and shop/eat and pick back up easily since it not a group with a guide.”

Kelly Moore

“The tour of New Haven was amazing! Enough detail to keep us interested but not too much to be boring. Plus the app functionality and syncing with location made for a seamless experience. This was better than booking a personal tour because we could pause it anytime we needed more time to explore on our own. Highly recommended!!”

Each night, participants can snuggle up at private deluxe REI Signature Camps, where food and a bonfire await. The trip begins at $1,849 per person and is suitable for adults and teens.

See the Edge of the Earth in Alaska

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

For a bit more of a walking challenge, sign up for the six-day Denali National Park Walking & Hiking Tour from Backroads. The trip begins with a thrilling helicopter ride over the Chugach backcountry before dropping guests off to hike over the stunning terrain, including mountain vistas, glaciers, flowering meadows, and raging rivers. This trip, too is best suited for adults and teens in good shape and begins at $3,299 per person.

Drink in the Coastal Views of Maine

Every square inch of Maine is stunning, but there is something uniquely special about its craggy coastline. Walk along its glorious parts, and get a "taste" of local culture with the six-day journey by Country Walkers . Head out on the trip through Acadia National Park alongside seasoned outdoorsmen before making your way through Bar Harbor and meeting local lobsterwoman Stefanie Alley. She may even invite you onto her boat to teach you a thing or two about the crustaceans. Tour options start at $1,098 and are fit for almost everyone.

See the Classics in Savannah

Take five days to walk and see it all with the Charleston & Savannah Walking Tour from Classic Journeys. On the tour, guests will visit the area's harbors, walk past the colorful historic homes, stroll through private gardens, and more. The tours also come with delightful shared meals, luxury accommodations, and an expert guide to answer any questions you may have along the way. Tour prices begin at $4,195 per person. It is fit for almost all those in at least fairly good physical condition.

Sip and Savor With a California Wine Tour

Want to add a little more fun adult time into those walks? Head out for a five-day wine country tour of California with Backroads. The tour snakes through Napa Valley, taking guests through the oak forests and ancient redwood groves before peeking out to the coastal bluffs. But, perhaps most importantly, it also stops at local vineyards for tastings with regional winemakers. Because if you went to Napa and didn't do a wine tasting, did you really visit? Pricing begins at $4,399 and should be suitable for those in reasonably good physical condition.

Walks of Italy started with a simple goal: giving outstanding tours of the Roman Colosseum.

15 years, 8 destinations and 50+ tours later, our philosophy remains the same: We believe the best way to travel is to take walks.

Every Italian destination has a story to tell—but you won't hear it on a tour bus! The only way to truly understand Italy is to meet people, hear stories, and dive deep… and that's exactly what we're all about at Walks of Italy. Even when it comes to iconic attractions like the Roman Colosseum and St. Mark’s Basilica in Venice, we strive to find new and better ways to discover them.

You’ll experience Italy at ground level, with a small group of like-minded travelers and a new, in-the-know local friend: your guide!

Historic Baltic Republics Tour

Historic Baltic Republics

I chose this tour because I wanted to see much more of the Baltic countries than just a day or 2 in the capital cities, and this one was the sort I was looking for. It was a wonderful group of fellow travelers. The tour guide, Dziugas, was great; very knowledgeable about all aspects of the 3 countries, provided interesting commentary, and was laid back and flexible with us.

Best of Poland (11 Days) Tour

Best of Poland (11 Days)

Everything was outstanding. Coach, Kate (tour guide), all other guides (except one), hotels, meals, itineraries, driver, sights, tours. Two issues. Our Auschwitz tour guide had a very, very pronounced accent and spoke very quickly making it difficult to understand him. Extremely knowledgeable but needs to slow down his speech. Loved that every tour guide throughout the country was a "local". The other issue was that the optional tours available were charged in Euros and not Polish money. Other than those "minor issues" the tour was truly outstanding, interesting, educational and fun!

Fantastic tour from beginning to end! Our Tour Director, Hannah, was awesome! She was fun, very knowledgeable about all the areas we visited and went out of her way to add special things to our itinerary that made the trip extra memorable. Highly recommend this tour (beautiful countries!) and Trafalgar!

Hate bus tours? These 7 unique guided tours were made for you

W hether I'm vacationing with my family or traveling solo , I love having a guide when I'm exploring a new destination. But guided tours that consist of riding on a bus for days on end are just not for me. If you're like that too, I have good news, because it turns out there are plenty of other ways to travel with the benefit of a guide.

If you want active family travel adventures or simply an alternative to the classic coach tour , there are options around the globe for you to hit the road without hitting the (actual) road. Here are my top non-bus tour picks, which include hiking, biking, trekking, and kayaking tours; expedition and river cruises; and a train journey for the ages.

WORLD'S BEST: 15 best guided tour operators for trips around the world

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

1. A Hiking Tour

Norway Fjord Trekking with G Adventures

Plan to move more and see plenty as you hike through the land of the Vikings. G Adventures offers a range of adventure tours, and trekking the fjords of Norway is a great way to take advantage of one of the company's areas of expertise: hiking.

After a ferry journey from Bergen, you'll settle into basic accommodations in Odda, your home base for five days of trekking at moderate and high altitude. Highlights of those treks include walking across the blue ice of the Folgefonna Glacier, taking in the views across the Hardangerfjord, and hiking the Oddadalen Valley.

WOMEN TRAVELING TOGETHER: 9 best tour companies for women’s-only tours

G Adventures prides itself on taking care of the adventure and activities, so you have experienced guides and spend your days touring the dramatic landscape. Since it's a budget-minded adventure tour, the itinerary includes basic accommodations such as the Trolltunga Hotel. With a lounge and bar and basic rooms, you’ll have everything you need, including a lakeside location at the end of your active days.

  • Starting price: $2,465
  • Length: 7 days, 6 nights
  • Activity level: Challenging ("Some high-altitude hikes or more strenuous activities, but accessible to most healthy travelers.")

2. An Expedition Cruise

Indonesia and Papua New Guinea itineraries with Lindblad Expeditions

Lindblad Expeditions and National Geographic have teamed up to offer some of the most incredible cruise opportunities on the seven seas. Pairing the sophistication and quality of Lindblad Expeditions and the knowledgebase of Nat Geo, these opportunities are the go-to for small-ship educational and elegant cruising. With 28 destinations , you have your choice, but I recommend the opportunity to get up close and personal with the islands of Southeast Asia, many of which are uninhabited and otherwise impossible to get to.

TOUR REVIEW: National Geographic Expeditions’ Costa Rica Wildlife and Conservation Tour walks on the wild side

Lindblad-National Geo’s five itineraries in Indonesia and Papua New Guinea range from 11 to 20 days. On the Bali and Beyond trip, guests visit three national parks, including Komodo, a UNESCO Heritage site. And on the Journey through Southeast Asia sailing, guests see both the urban beauty of Singapore and the reefs on the islands of the Andaman Sea.

Though much of what there is to see and do is in the water and on land, you’ll have an experience on board as well. With no assigned seat dining and casual attire, you’ll feel right at home in the dining room, and a central lounge brings people together to share photos, stories, and experiences.

"Onboard, I loved hanging out in the lounge, where there was always good snacks and drinks, good conversations, and often an informative and interactive talk from one of the onboard experts," says TourScoop's Christine Sarkis, who sailed with Lindblad on its seasonal Baja California offering Among the Great Whales .

  • Starting price: $9,800
  • Length: 11-20 days
  • Activity level: Easy to Moderate

3. A Train Tour

Vancouver to Lake Louise, Canada, aboard the Rocky Mountaineer

Traveling on the Rocky Mountaineer is an unrivaled experience in train travel. This unique journey through Western Canada is worth every penny, whether you choose the Silver or Gold-Leaf experience . The journey along rivers, valleys, and mountaintops is truly one of a kind, as the local roadways cannot access this route.

"I took this trip a few years back and still think of it at least once a month. The views, the food, and the comfort were so exceptional that it really stands out," says TourScoop's Christine Sarkis.

TRAIN TRIPS: 12 best Amtrak vacations and scenic train rides in North America

The six-day adventure on the First Passage experience starts with your arrival day plus one in Vancouver; that's time enough to explore the Stanley Park Seawall, stroll through historic Gastown, or take the ferry to Granville Island.

Your first of two days on the train will take you to Kamloops; as you go, river canyons, green fields, and lush forests surround you as you wind along the Thompson River to Kamloops. Unique to the Rocky Mountaineer, you actually spend your evenings on terra firma , enjoying comfortable lodging in Vancouver, Kamloops, and majestic Lake Louise. On the second day, experience high mountain passes, ranch land, and snow-capped peaks as you wind your way to your final destination at Lake Louise.

The Rocky Mountaineer’s glass-domed train cars are why you’ll book this trip, but you'll have the added reward of knowledgeable hosts, delicious locally-inspired breakfast and lunch options, and comfortable and spacious reclining seats with plenty of legroom.

  • Starting price: $2,653
  • Length: 6 days, 5 nights
  • Activity level: Easy

4. A kayak tour

San Juan Islands, Washington, with Anacortes Kayak Tours

There are plenty of ways to see Washington state's San Juan Islands , but there's nothing better than staying close to the water to experience the thrill of wildlife both in and above the water.

If you're up for a little bit of challenge and want to get a sense of the islands, a multi-day kayak tour is the way to go, and Anacortes Kayak Tours provides the perfect intro and enough options to adapt to all sorts of budgets and interests. With two- to five- day overnights (and options for both all-inclusive and self-catered), this family owned company offers what we all look for in a tour: flexibility.

BRING THE KIDS: 50 family vacation ideas for the best trip ever

Anacortes Kayak Tours is a family-owned business born out of Megan and Erik Schorr’s love of the water. You’ll feel that love permeates through every aspect of your experience with this company, from the super friendly booking staff (though you can book online) and passionate and deeply knowledgeable guides to the high-quality gear.

When I went with my family, our guide was kind and funny, and engaged our kids beautifully (both a teen and a child), helped us find and identify birds, plants, tidal changes, and sea life, and always put safety first. We couldn’t have asked for a better experience.

Three-day options can give you a peak at the Cypress Island Reserve or Stuart, Jones, or Sucia Islands. Longer trips might take you as far as the Canadian border or the Wasp Islands. And, if you’d like to plan your own tour as a family-owned business, Anacortes is ready and willing to create a custom itinerary for your group of six or more, including all meals and glamping-like accommodations.

  • Starting price: $499 and up with options to self-cater or have all-inclusive meals
  • Length: 2-5 nights or custom
  • Activity level: Moderate to Challenging

5. A riverboat tour

Pharaohs and pyramids: Cairo, Egypt, with Viking River Tours

On the 12-day Pharaohs and Pyramids tour from Viking Rivers Cruises , guests go deep on the wonders of the Nile. These well-appointed ships are designed particularly for Nile River cruising, and set you up to have a 360-degree view of the river from the sundeck, pool deck, lounge area, and restaurant.

ULTIMATE GUIDE: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.

Spend your first three checking out Cairo, Giza, the pyramids and museums; on day four, fly to Luxor to see the Temple obelisks and pick up your ship. There's plenty onboard as well, including a lounge and bar, pool and two jacuzzis, and a range of sleeping options—including almost 300 square foot suites. During the river portion of the trip, you'll see the Aswan High Dam, ride in a felucca sailing ship, and see temples that demonstrate the incredible feats of ancient Egyptian engineering.

  • Starting price: $5,999
  • Length: 12 days, 11 nights

6. A walking tour

Walking the Portuguese Camino with Intrepid Travel

Travelers can count on Intrepid Travel for a variety of adventures and for staying true to its mission of “creating positive change through the joy of travel.” A certified B Corp with a commitment to climate action, empowering and supporting local communities, and sustainable development, Intrepid is a trusted name in group travel.

WALK THE WORLD: 9 best companies for walking, trekking, and hiking tours

The Santiago de Compostela is a bucket-list hike for many. But with seemingly infinite ways to do it, it's nice to let Intrepid do the heavy lifting of coordinating, and take this alternative route along what is known as the Portuguese Camino , which follows the Portuguese coast from Porto to the Camino.

There are fewer pilgrims on this lesser-known trail, so you’ll enjoy unencumbered vistas paired with lunch stops and a dedicated rest day in Vigo. One part of your walk includes local wineries and the hot springs of the Caldas de Rei region. With all of that walking, you’ll appreciate that Intrepid transfers your luggage between your accommodations, so you can bring what you need but only need to carry a day pack.

  • Starting price: $2,390
  • Length: 10 days, 9 nights
  • Activity level: Moderate (long walking days, sometimes carrying all bags for up to 30 minutes)

7. A bike tour

A cycling trip in Chile with Backroads

No need for a custom trip if you're going to ride with Backroads . Known in the industry for its knowledgeable guides, community-building approach, and detailed planning, Backroads trips feel personalized. And with backpacking, hiking, snow-adventure, cruising, culinary, and multi-adventure trips, Backroads covers a lot of different adventures.

FROM THE VINE: 9 best European wine tours to take this year

There's a lot to love about Backroads’ seven-day adventure through the lakes and volcanoes of Chile , which is geared to sporty adult families. Starting in Puerto Varas, you’ll wind your way through Chile’s Ring of Fire with stunning views of remote lakes and valleys. Along the way, you’ll have an opportunity to sample local foods, explore the intersection of cultures in colonial villages, and learn from local indigenous leaders.

This Backroads trip offers premium lodging (other trips might offer either premium or casual), which means you’ll stay in elegant hotels with exceptional views, plus perks like pools and spas. All meals, beverages, and snacks are included as well.

This particular bike tour includes Backroads’ standard titanium bikes, helmets, and accessories, and given the distance it covers, also includes shuttling to make sure your biking experience covers the most special views—fear not, the views from the shuttle aren't too shabby either.

7 Useful Apps Every Traveler Should Know About

By Harrison Pierce

Technology continues to make travel easier for millions of people around the globe. New apps offer travelers fresh ways to research a destination, connect with fellow globetrotters, communicate with locals, and track their flights. As a full-time digital nomad , I’ve learned the importance of having the right tools at your disposal when on the road.

Over the past few years, I’ve visited dozens of countries, flown hundreds of thousands of miles, and tested countless apps to find the ones that prove to be the most helpful. And while tools like Meetup, Google Maps, Google Translate, currency converters, and vacation rental , airline, and hotel–specific apps are in fact indispensable on most trips, I find that many of the best travel apps are still undiscovered by my fellow travelers.

Below, seven travel apps that make life on the go markedly easier (and more fun), from real-time flight trackers to photo-sharing gems—all of these apps are free, but some have paid pro versions worth considering. Don’t think these apps are only for full-time travelers—they prove useful for every type of traveler, whether you're in a brand-new destination or back for a return visit.

Discover the best apps for travelers:

Apps for flying, apps for exploring, apps for photo sharing.

Image may contain: Aircraft, Airliner, Airplane, Transportation, Vehicle, and Flight

My favorite app on this list is Flighty, a must-have for any frequent flier . The free version is fantastic, but I recommend splurging for the premium version, which gives you even more useful information and comes at a reasonable cost of $48 per year. The functionality it provides more than justifies the price.

The free version allows you to input all future flights plus past journeys you've taken within the last year. It provides updated information if any schedule changes occur to upcoming flights and allows you to track all the miles you’ve flown in one place.

The other main benefit is that it allows you to share your flight information with friends and family members who are also on Flighty. They will receive real-time updates about your flight without you having to text them. My parents love to make sure I’m safe so they appreciate getting detailed information about my travels—even while I’m in the air.

Image may contain: Gun, Weapon, Shooting, and Spiral

Flightradar24 is a favorite app among fellow aviation geeks. It lets you track almost any aircraft you see in the air throughout the day or night. You can track your own flight, a friend's flight, or any plane you see in real-time. It shares plenty of cool data, like the altitude, speed, arrival and departure airports and times, and tail number.

Image may contain: Logo, and First Aid

There are tons of eSIM apps on the market, but Airalo is probably my favorite, with digital SIM cards available for dozens of countries. I find it to be the most reliable and offers the best data packages. It can be a little pricey, but it is the best option if you’re only taking short trips. Holafly is another eSIM app that offers unlimited data and works well, but I find the app to be much more glitchy than Airalo and would recommend using the desktop version.

Image may contain: Symbol, First Aid, Text, and Logo

This one is for the planner of the group. Wanderlog merges the best of a bunch of different apps into one. Imagine an app that lets you plan a trip with ease: collaborate with friends as if you’re on Google Docs, manage expense tracking like Splitwise, and have a central place for your reservations, checklists, and more. Tripit is a similar travel planner app, so you can download both and get a feel for which interface you like better.

Image may contain: Paper, and Ice

Been allows you to track the countries you’ve visited and make a wish list of places you can’t wait to cross off your travel bucket list . It gives you information like the percentage of the globe you’ve been to and shows you a world map of your trips. It’s always fun to add in a new country whenever I reach my destination.

Image may contain: Sign, Symbol, Road Sign, and Weapon

This app was introduced to me by fellow nomads I met at a cafe in Montevideo, Uruguay . It automatically tracks your route across the world, allowing you to quickly upload pictures throughout your travels that can be viewed by anyone who has access to your profile. It’s an excellent way to share important moments with loved ones without needing to send photos to each person individually. Users can also create easily accessible guides filled with up-to-date information to help you plan your own trip.

Image may contain: Symbol, Number, Text, and First Aid

Steller is another app that a friend recently introduced me to, and I’ve quickly fallen in love with it. It uses a combination of AI and user experiences to help you plan trips around the globe. From recommendations of things to see, like the Recoleta Cemetery in Buenos Aires or the Royal Palace of Naples, to full guidebooks created by users, you can get inspired, book experiences, and discover hidden gems within this app.

James carville blames ‘preachy females’ for dem polling problems, says biden’s approval rating like seeing “grandma naked’.

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Longtime Democratic strategist James Carville blamed the party’s polling problems on “too many preachy females” and compared looking at President Biden’s remarkably low approval ratings to “walking in on your grandma naked.”

“You can’t get the image out of your mind,” Carville, 79, told The New York Times’ Maureen Dowd .

The outspoken political consultant, who rose to national prominence leading President Bill Clinton’s successful 1992 presidential campaign, is back on the trail raising money for Democrats as well as working on a documentary.

Biden’s approval rating sits at an lowly 37% even after his highly touted State of the Union address.

Carville, a southerner never known to mince words, thinks that Democrats’ “feminine” focus on “woke stuff is killing us” — and could cost the party the election.

Biden's low approval rating has Democratic strategist James Carville concerned

He’s most concerned about Biden appearing to lose support of black voters, who form one of his strongest bases.

“A suspicion of mine is that there are too many preachy females” dominating the Democrats’ culture and message, he told The Times in New Orleans. “‘Don’t drink beer. Don’t watch football. Don’t eat hamburgers. This is not good for you.’ The message is too feminine: ‘Everything you’re doing is destroying the planet. You’ve got to eat your peas.’

“If you listen to Democratic elites — NPR is my go-to place for that — the whole talk is about how women, and women of color, are going to decide this election,” he continued. “I’m like: ‘Well, 48 percent of the people that vote are males. Do you mind if they have some consideration?’”

Carville disagrees with party members who think there has been too much emphasis on Biden’s age, noting it’s the first thing most voters say about the 81-year-old incumbent.

James Carville

“Now don’t tell me that Biden has more energy or cognition than Trump because it’s evident that, yeah, Trump’s got word salads, but he projects energy,” Carville said — also calling Trump “insane” and a “criminal.”

Biden’s decision to run for reelection also keeps younger, talented party members in his shadow.

While he’s unsure of how the race will play out for Biden, Carville is still gunning for him.

“He’s a tenacious guy that’s had a real life. He’s a state school guy. He doesn’t have an iota of elitism. He doesn’t even know what ‘woke’ is,” he said.

When asked how Biden can change the narrative around his campaign, Carville said with a shrug: “I don’t think he can do much more than soldier on and let the Democratic groups kick in.”
