That said, it’s worth spending a moment researching the advantages of visiting during specific times, maybe to optimize amazing wildlife sightings or find the best snorkeling conditions. January to March is the best time for fantastic weather

If warm weather and sun-drenched beaches are a priority, you can’t go wrong with a visit to the Maldives in January, February or March. These months fall outside the monsoon period and are typically when the islands get the most hours of sun. Full disclosure – monsoon season tails off in late November but this is when prices start to creep up due to the demand for winter sun holidays, while rates also get higher closer to Christmas.

Another reason this is an excellent time to visit is because this is when the water is at its clearest and calmest – the snorkeling and diving are fantastic. Atolls such as the Raa Atoll, famous for its diverse marine life and spectacular coral formations, are great destinations to check out at this time of year. But if you’re a beach bum who prefers to stay close to their sun lounger, you’re also in luck – on average you can expect around nine hours of sunshine during these months, while humidity levels remain low and average temperatures hover around 29°C (84°F).

April to August is a great time to bag a bargain

Late April is when the first showers of the year start to appear but April to August is still a wonderful time to book a holiday to the Maldives, simply because it’s one of the cheapest times to visit. Even with the higher chance of rainfall, you’ll still enjoy between seven and eight hours of sunshine every day.

It’s worth bearing in mind that if you’re a keen snorkeler or scuba diver, water visibility is often reduced during these months (although the average sea temperature at this time – a bath-warm 30°C (86°F) – means it’s still a fantastic time for a dip in the ocean). This is an excellent season for travelers with a limited budget – airfares and resort rates are significantly lower and resorts are less crowded. Finding a spot at the bar from which to soak up those gorgeous sunset views won’t be a problem and complimentary room upgrades are more likely.

Don’t forget that the Maldives isn’t just about the great outdoors, either: resorts offer a staggering range of activities (most of which don’t depend on the weather) and there are often more on offer between April and August, ranging from cookery masterclasses to art workshops. Fancy embracing paint power? Cora Cora Maldives , on the Raa Atoll, is a great option and runs a series of art classes with a local artist who daubed his beautiful designs onto the resort’s villas.

June and July are when to hang ten in the Maldives

June and July are ideal months to try surfing in the Maldives because this is when the waves are at their highest. A growing number of resorts now have surf schools, although one of our favorite spots is Laamu Atoll. This is where you’ll find the Six Senses Laamu , which was one of the first resorts in the Maldives with a surf school. Generally, the northern and central atolls are the best destinations for surfing in the Maldives.

July is the perfect time to join in with Independence Day celebrations

The Maldives’ Independence Day is on July 26 and parades, parties and cultural performances transform this island nation as everyone celebrates together, with some of the most colorful celebrations held at the country’s resorts. Typically, there’s a wider range of cultural activities for guests to enjoy around this time, whether it’s masterclasses led by traditional lacquer artists or lessons in leaf-folding, which involves creating elaborate sculptures from palm leaves. Trust us – your average piece of Japanese origami will look rather plain after this.

Independence Day is also a great time to sample local cuisine, as many resorts will roll out special celebratory menus. Highlights will often include delicious cakes adorned with the colors of the Maldivian flag (the cutting of this cake is usually one of the most important events) and there will be endless opportunities to sample traditional dishes such as saagu bondai bai , a delicious sago dessert made with coconut milk, rose water and cardamom.

October and November are brilliant months for wildlife spotting

Yes, there’s a higher risk of rainfall and thunderstorms during these months, but they’re generally short, sharp downpours. You can expect between six and eight hours of sun a day, while the mercury will hover around 27°C (80°F). The major advantage to visiting at this time of year is the wildlife-spotting opportunities. Whale sharks and manta rays are regularly sighted as they feast on plankton. For some of the best sightings head to the Raa Atoll – this is a prime manta-spotting territory, and the northern tip’s proximity to the Baa Atoll (a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve) ramps up the wow factor.

If seeing the region’s marine life is a priority, stay at a resort that operates conservation programs or other schemes designed with wildlife in mind. The InterContinental Maldives Maamunagau Resort , for example, is regarded as one of the best places to see manta rays. But don’t just take our word for it – this is where UK-based charity The Manta Trust chose to set up its first base in the Maldives, and visitors can sign up for a wide range of manta-themed activities, including manta-spotting snorkeling excursions and presentations about the charity’s work.

December means plenty of opportunities for festive fun

Yes, December is one of the more expensive times to visit the Maldives, but we’re firm believers this period should never be ruled out. It’s a fantastic time to spot marine life and the region’s resorts go all out when it comes to festive fun. At the Hard Rock Maldives and the St. Regis Maldives Vommuli Resort , for example, Santa typically makes regular visits on his jet-ski, and almost every resort will drape its palm trees with fairy lights.

One way to offset the higher prices is by opting for a resort that can be reached by speedboat (the cost of which is normally included in the room rate), rather than a more expensive seaplane journey. Weather-wise, expect around seven hours of sunshine a day and daytime temperatures of around 29°C (84°F). Sea temperatures are slightly cooler, but still hover around a perfectly pleasant 20°C (68°F) – the ideal temperature for a post-Christmas-dinner dip in the ocean, we reckon.

The Maldives is one of the world's most picture-perfect luxury travel destinations. To experience the idyllic tropical scenes you've no doubt admired, the best time to visit the Maldives is in the "dry season" from December to April. Not surprisingly, this is also peak season when rates skyrocket. Therefore, if budget is an issue, traveling at a different time may be preferable. You should plan your visit according to the various things to do in the Maldives . Most people are willing to pay the higher prices for good weather, as outdoor activities are limited when it rains. However, one of the benefits of visiting the Maldives during the wet season are the dramatic sunsets after the rain clears.

The weather in the Maldives is split into two distinct seasons by two monsoons, in which the wind changes to the opposite direction.

• The dry northeast monsoon from January to March. This is labeled the "dry season" but it doesn't mean it won't rain. The reality is that the weather is more stable and there's less chance of it raining. Short afternoon and evening showers are frequent in the southern atolls. If you really want to avoid the rain, your best bet is February and March in the northern atolls. December and April are considered transitional months between the monsoons.
• The windy, wet southwest monsoon from mid-May to November. This monsoon is characterized by intense stormy periods that can be brief or last for a few days followed by perfect sunny spells. The weather is unpredictable and the conditions can alter at any minute, although it tends to rain more at night during the wet season. The transitional months from October to early December can be particularly unsettled, with quite a few bursts of rain, before the season transforms completely.

However, it's important to keep in mind that the islands in the Maldives are situated over a considerable distance of more than 800 kilometers (almost 500 miles) from north to south. This means that the weather will vary across the country, and even from island to island in the same area. The southern atolls receive more annual rain than the northern atolls. Yet, rain tends to be less frequent in the southern atolls during the wet season, as they're less exposed to the southwest monsoon. As a result, they're sunnier and not as windy.

What doesn't vary much is the temperature in the Maldives, due to the country's location right on the equator. It stays warm throughout the year, with average temperatures rarely dropping below 77 degrees Fahrenheit (25 degrees Celsius) at night or rising above 88 degrees Fahrenheit (31 degrees Celsius) in the day.

The level of humidity also remains constant, and high, at about 80 percent. The water is warm too, with an average temperature of about 82 degrees F (28 degrees C).

There are some extra things to consider if you're planning on scuba diving in the Maldives , which has some of the most remarkable dive sites in the world. In particular, visibility and marine life change according to the season.

Visibility is generally superior in the dry season , and is especially good along the northeastern atolls during that time. February is the pick of the months for diving there. However, the wet season is a better time to see sharks and manta rays, especially on the southwestern side of the Maldives (around South Ari Atoll) from May to October. The manta rays are attracted by the plentiful availability of plankton to feed on.

If you're lucky, you might get to see a whale shark. The Maldives is one of the few places on earth where this is possible. These massive sharks are mostly found on the western side of the Maldives from May to December, and on the eastern side up until April. The protected area off the coast of Maamigili Island in South Ari Atoll has whale shark sightings year-round.

Unfortunately, getting to the Maldives from the U.S. is quite an ordeal as there are no direct flights. Be prepared for travel to take a considerable amount of time (up to 30 hours) and money (from about $1,200 if you fly out of a major international hub such as New York, Boston, or Los Angeles). If you have limited funds, you may want to think about going to the Maldives for a couple of weeks during the cheaper, wet season rather than going for just a week during peak season.

Prices for accommodations in the Maldives generally drop substantially at the start of May, on the fringe of the low season. It's often the case that the weather is still decent then, as the wet season doesn't set in until the second half of May. Plus, if you have your heart set on a certain resort in the Maldives, the low season will make it more affordable.

May and June tend to be the cheapest months, with deals for over-water bungalows at top-rated resorts running up to 50 percent off high season prices. Do compare prices (including flight prices) though, as they rise during summer break.

The most popular islands in the Maldives book up well in advance during the high season. While flash sales and last-minute offers come up throughout the year, these are more common for the commercial mass-market resorts. Of course, this isn't an issue if you're flexible in regards to your accommodations and travel dates. If you can drop everything and book within six weeks of travel, you may be able to score yourself a super deal as resorts (even the top-end ones) constantly adjust their prices to maximize occupancy levels. So, make a note of a handful of resorts you're interested in (here are some really beautiful hotels or take a look at the Maldives Tourism website for inspiration) and monitor them.

The fact that accommodations are spread over many islands in the Maldives means that it never feels too crowded there, even during peak season.

January is a very popular time to visit the Maldives, as people want to escape the winter at home. Prices are especially high over the New Year period. Make sure you book well in advance. The weather stabilizes in January, resulting in mostly calm and clear sunny days. While you can expect about three rainy days during the month in the north, this increases up to 10 days in the south.

• Huravee Day is a tribute to Sultan Hussain Izzuddin, who freed the Maldives from brief South Indian occupation in 1752. It features traditional music, food, and dance. The date is based on the Islamic calendar and varies each year, but it's always celebrated on the third day of the sixth month which generally falls in late December or early January.

February is regarded as the driest and least humid month to visit the Maldives. Statistically, the north only experiences a couple of rainy days during the month. The number of rainy days in the south also drops to about five, and these are usually short showers in the southeast part. Prices are high, reflecting the fact that it's peak tourist season.

• Valentines Day: Many resorts offer special (and costly!) romantic packages for Valentine's Day.

The number of rainy days remains pretty constant in the north but starts to rise to an average of eight in the south. Again, the rain is usually restricted to short bursts that bring relief from the heat, rather than lengthy downpours. The surfing season gets underway in the Maldives in March. The temperature and humidity are slightly higher in April, as the transition from the dry northeast monsoon to the wet southwest monsoon commences. The number of rainy days per month jumps to as many as 18 in the north, compared to only 10 or so in the south. Sharks and manta rays are a draw for scuba divers in the south.

The rain continues similar to June but eases off slightly in the north during July, bringing the number of rainy days down to about 15 or 16. The south experiences a couple of extra rainy days throughout the month though, averaging around 12. Rates can be higher in July, as families go on summer vacation. This month is great for surfing, as the storms produce reliable big swells.

• Independence Day (July 26) marks the day the Maldives gained independence from the British in 1965, after 77 years of protection. Cultural events take place across the country.

August is another popular off-season month for summer vacation in the Maldives, which may result in fewer discounted deals. The number of rainy days continues to reduce slightly in the north, especially towards the end of August. However, it remains constant at about 12 in the south. Downpours are short and heavy.

The weather in the Maldives is quite unpredictable in September. It can rain heavily, or alternatively you may get only an hour of rain some days. There are less tourists, and this is reflected in discounted rates for accommodations. The number of rainy days is about the same in the north and south, averaging around 13 during the month.

• National Day celebrates the end of 15 years of Portuguese occupation in the Maldives, in 1573. The date is set according to the Islamic calendar and varies each year. In 2022, it falls on Sept. 27. There are patriotic parades and marches throughout the Maldives, especially in the capital city Male.

The wet southwest monsoon begins to withdraw in October, producing unsettled weather. The number of rainy days jumps to an average of 15 in the south, exceeding that in the north. The surfing season draws to a close in October. It's also the final month for good sharks and manta ray sightings in the south. Expect rates at top resorts to rise towards the end of October.

The swap in wind direction, associated with the transition from southwest monsoon to northeast monsoon in November, reduces the number of rainy days in the north to about eight. It remains high, at about 15, in the south though. There are heavy downpours that tend to pass quickly in the afternoons. This is the last month to find a cheap deal (if you're lucky) before peak season really kicks in.

• Victory Day (Nov. 3) commemorates the defeat of an attempted coup by a terrorist group from Sri Lanka in 1988. A military march, drills, traditional dances, and processions are held in Male.
• Republic Day (Nov. 11) marks the day Sultanate rule was replaced with a republic government in 1968. Marching bands and vibrant parades are highlights in Male.

December is the start of the "dry," peak season in the Maldives. You'll still get some rain at the beginning of the month (and it can be heavy at times) before the weather transforms completely. When to find the best weather in the Maldives

The Maldives is often warm and sunny throughout the year, but its climate is split into a wet season and a dry season. During the dry season, from November through April, temperatures hover in the mid- to upper 80s. Average precipitation is lowest from January through March, but even during the dry season, an afternoon rain is possible.

During the wet season, from May through October, some islands may experience upward of nine inches of precipitation in a single month. Although this sounds like enough to ruin a vacation , most rain comes from fast-moving afternoon storms, allowing visitors to enjoy sunshine and warm temperatures the rest of the day.

Many restaurants do offer special meals for Iftar — the evening meal breaking each daily fast — which often comprise local foods and juices not typically served the rest of the year.

When to visit the Maldives to see bioluminescence

In oceans and bays around the world, bioluminescent plankton illuminate the water, almost like an aquatic imitation of the aurora borealis. While many animals on both land and sea emit a bioluminescent light (think: fireflies and jellyfish), the plankton often appear at the water's surface, giving it a bluish glow.

One of the most popular places to view the plankton is off of Vaadhoo Island in the Raa Atoll, although it's possible to see the phenomenon in any of the atolls. Your best bet is to visit between June and October, which is when the plankton are typically present.

Bioluminescence can only be seen in turbulent water, such as in the waves on the shoreline or wake from a boat. It can also appear after stirring the water with your foot or hand.

Flights to Malé are generally cheapest in the late fall and winter, although the exact months vary depending on where you are flying from.

According to Skyscanner.com , flights from Miami, New York City and Chicago are cheapest in February. Average airfare from New York is $642, $710 from Chicago and $739 from Miami.

Flights from the West Coast — Seattle, San Francisco and Los Angeles — are cheapest in November. Los Angeles is the cheapest city to fly out of overall, with the average cost of airfare around $385. From Seattle and San Francisco, expect to pay around $710 and $700, respectively.

Affordable lodging

Lodging prices vary, depending on exactly where you're staying, but it's a safe bet to say the wet season — specifically, May through August — is the cheapest time to stay in the Maldives. According to travel search site Kayak , average hotel prices are at their lowest in May, when you can expect to pay $369 per night. Prices peak at around $705 per night in December. With the exception of November, when prices are in the mid-$500 range, expect to pay in the mid-$600 range the rest of the year.

It is an increasingly preferred destination for families and honeymooners. The Maldives is hot and sunny all year round, with average temperatures of 23ºC-31ºC. Depending on your preferred activity, the best time to visit Maldives could really be any time of the year as there are no winters per say in Maldives.

Why you should visit now: Clearly the weather and the resultant all round beauty make this season the best time to vacation. Minimal precipitation and warm weather make it an ideal setting. The rainfall too is very light and hence not a hindrance.

During the dry season, visibility is also excellent, because of the currents beginning to flow in November from the northeast. This helps you further enjoy the breathtaking view of fabulous lagoons protected by coral reefs and other atolls, and gorgeous beaches.

Things to know before you visit –  While the country is crowded during this season, since each resort inhabits its own island and is to an extent detached from the next island, unlike other crowded vacation destinations, you likely will not have to face extremely large crowds.  It may hence be prudent to check out some of the islands and see what you prefer.

Baros, Sun Island, Nalaguraidhoo Island in South Ari Atoll, Banana Reef and North Mal-Atoll are some suggested locations. The HP Reef is also a one of the most highly rated tourist attractions. It is a protected marine location bustling with marine life. 

One major festival during this period is Mawlid which means the birth of, Prophet Muhamed in November.  It is one of the most famous Maldives festivals which is celebrated carnival style over two days. There are huge street processions and mosque decorations. 

Tips – Hotel tariffs and costs towards various activities can be extremely high given this is peak season. For more budget-oriented tourists, a preferred time to visit would be in April which is towards the end of the peak season and entering the lean months. 

Being a tourist hotspot aside from Indian and Maldivian options, one can enjoy food styles from across the globe. Traditional Maldivian cuisine is based on coconuts, fish, and starches. Some of the common seafood forming part of the local cuisine includes Skipjack tuna, yellowfin tuna, frigate tuna and wahoo. Given the proximity, one does find a strong Indian influence and hence an abundance of curries and other flavours and spices. 

Refrain from carrying pork, alcohol, tobacco products and religious books. The law is very strict in this regard.

Maldives in Wet Season (May to November)

Temperature – ~31 degrees celsius by day and ~ 25 degrees Celsius by night 

Weather – The annual rainfall averages 254 centimetres (100 inches) in the north and 381 centimetres (150 inches) in the south. September tends to be the wettest month.

The intermittent and heavy rains make the destination less attractive for most vacationers. However there are some carefree ones who are more than happy to visit during this time. Venturing into the water however is not often advisable in this season and should be done at one’s own risk.

Significance – This time of year is popular with surfers, because the area sees bigger waves and better swells for surfing during these months. While the waters can be dangerous, the truly adventurous traveller with the right gear can look forward to a whale of a time.  

Why you should visit now –  The Holy month of Ramadan which tends to be in May is one of the best times to visit Maldives as you get to savour a lot of traditional delicacies. Experience the restaurants which also offer special iftar meals and rose, apricot and kamardine flavoured juices.

Fairly reasonable prices, less crowded resorts and optimal surf and scuba conditions make some of the more adventurous tourists actually prefer this time to travel. In the wet season, the water temperatures are also a couple of degrees lower, which appear to inspire larger numbers of hammerhead sharks and reef sharks to come together, and to do so in shallower waters than in the dry season. Visibility however isn’t as good what is experienced in the dry season as the currents are less.

Things to know before the visit – Eid –ul-Alhaa or Eid al Adha, the festival that commemorates the willingness of Ibrahim to sacrifice his son to Allah is celebrated during this period. On this day, islanders gather and fishermen catch a big fish made by weaving palm leaves.

The National Day of Maldives officially known as Qaumee Dhuvas falls sometime in November. This is the day when a local revolt forced the colonial Portuguese to leave the land. 

During the wet  season, Fihalhohi Island which is rich with shady coconut palm trees, pristine beaches and clear waters is an attractive getaway particularly if you are a honeymooner or looking for a romantic getaway. 

Huvahendhoo island with its calm water and lustrous greenery is another location recommended for a relaxed and rejuvenating stay. It is known to be a location ideal for families with both kids and adults having a lot to do and enjoy.

Tips – While Ramadaan offers you a great opportunity to savour the best of foods, during this period many services and shops will be shut during the time of prayer. There is also a need to cover yourself appropriately and avoid public display of affection when visiting the local islands. During Ramadan, the government offices work only from 9:30 AM to 1:30 PM and private offices shut by 3.00 PM.  Resorts and hotels are however not affected by the holy month.

Located on the equator, Maldives receives plenty of sunshine throughout the year. Temperatures range from 24 degrees at the lowest in December to an average of 31 degrees at the peak in April.  For a majority of vacationers the best time to visit is from mid-November to early April when the weather is dry and more welcoming. In other months the country experiences sporadic and sometimes heavy rains when the crystal clear water also disappears making it unattractive for most water activity aside from surfing.  For those interested in imbibing the culture and witnessing the major festivals though, the wet season mainly from May to November may be the best time to visit.

The best time to visit the Maldives is between November and April. The climate is warm and tropical, with average highs at a consistent 29°C to 31°C year-round and average lows rarely falling below 24°C.

January to April are the driest months, with little rain and low humidity, making this peak season at the resorts. Temperatures are still warm from May to December, but rain is more likely and there is a risk of storms. However, even during this period there are usually long spells of bright sunshine. Visiting the Maldives in January

With plenty of sunshine and warmth, this is a great time for a beach holiday. There is also great visibility for diving and snorkelling. This is a very popular time for travelling and booking in advance is advised.

These are the driest months, with warm temperatures, low humidity and great visibility for diving and snorkelling. This is a very popular time for travelling and booking in advance is advised.

Another good month to travel, with plenty of sunshine and good water visibility; however, there is a slightly increased risk of rain, especially toward the end of the month.

These months are still warm with long periods of sunshine, but rain is more likely and there is a risk of storms. In addition, the presence of plankton means diving visibility is slightly reduced. the weather was the way you wanted it to be. The sun was shining and it was warm. In the evening when you wanted to go to the sea the weather was still very nice and warm.

Except for one day it was sunny and warm. Occasional showers came more at night. The water was pleasant and the air temperature too.

We defied all warnings and advice and went to the Maldives in August, far away from the best travel season. Our wedding on 08.08. and the Maldives has always been a huge travel dream for us. So there was actually no alternative but to dare, because we did not want to wait until winter for our honeymoon. We flew with Emirates over Dubai and spent 10 nights in a pool villa on Baros Maldives. It was magical, magical, uniquely beautiful! Yeah, we had rain once. Usually it was heavy tropical showers that lasted about an hour. After that it cleared up and was sunny. Yes, it was a bit windy on some days, but nothing that would knock down a North German. And yes, in 3 days we had cloudy skies. This was not quite perfect for photos, but it was still hot and the Maldives Resorts also offer a lot of activities during the supposed “rainy season”. Above all, one thing must not be forgotten: For the fun of it, we had asked for an offer for the same flights and accommodation in December – the price was 2.5 times as high as in August! We got a real bargain and had a wonderful time.

We were on Holiday Island in June 2017 and the weather was very nice for 10 days. One day it was cloudy and my husband said: it was raining today. I was looking forward to it, wanted to stand in the rain on this beautiful island. The clouds moved on and it hasn’t rained a drop in 10 days. But we had fantastic pictures of the underwater world. We haven’t been there the last time….. bought us snorkel masks would like to go back to paradise?????????????????????????????

At 16 days 2 short showers. 3-4 days more wind.

This was already the 3rd time in May in the Maldives and we always had very good weather. With 12 vacation days usually 1 day of bad weather (wind, rain and high waves), otherwise always sunshine and good visibility under water.

Powdery white sand reflects sunlight so brilliantly it feels like it's searing your pupils. The inviting turquoise water is crystal clear, showcasing fish swimming below the surface like a glass aquarium. You may even spot a baby blacktip shark hugging the shoreline if you're lucky. 

Spend a little time on #TravelTikTok or Instagram, and you’ll see endless videos and images of the Maldives and its iconic over-the-water villas, which put guests literally inches from the ocean. Resorts occupy entire islands, lending a sense of privacy and luxury desired by travelers.

The Maldives’ rapid rise to becoming a top travel bucket list destination only unfolded over the past 50 years – with no signs of slowing down. International tourism accounts for 58.3% of the economy, according to the World Travel & Tourism Council . (Following closely behind is fishing.) By 2033, it’s forecasted to make up nearly 60.7%.

The number of tourists visiting consistently surpasses previous records. In 2022, there were 1.68 million tourists, and in 2023, over 1.8 million tourists visited the country with just over half a million residents.

“The outlook for the Maldives tourism industry has never looked brighter, and we are confident that we can achieve the 2 million tourists target set for this year,” Fathmath Thaufeeq, CEO and Managing Director of Maldives Marketing & Public Relations Corporation, told USA TODAY. 

Now recognized as a sought-after vacation spot, the country is focusing on preserving its beaches and coral reefs – primary factors drawing in visitors – amid climate change and increased human activity. 

“As the world's lowest-lying country, we are acutely aware of the crisis and its daily impacts,” said Thaufeeq. “Our very livelihood, heavily reliant on a thriving tourism industry, is inextricably linked to safeguarding our pristine environment.”

A ‘kept secret’ for decades

Before the 1970s, the Maldives – a remote archipelago comprising 1,192 islands in the Indian Ocean – was a “kept secret amongst the most adventurous travelers,” Thaufeeq said. There was essentially no tourism infrastructure. Many islands were uninhabited – to this day, around 1,004 remain so, only visited by locals for beach days and picnics. Local villages sustained themselves off of coconut and fishing. 

The country’s first official resort opened in 1972 by a Maldivian on a former coconut farm. It encompassed 30 rooms built of coral and limestone with palm thatch roofs. The resort was called Kurumba , meaning “coconut” in the local Dhivehi language. It was a rugged experience, with guests wading through water from the boat to the shore and not much to do besides fishing and enjoying the beach. Meals were served in canteens or during a beach barbecue. 

Despite this, the natural beauty of the Maldives was a complete hook, line, and sinker.

New resorts are continuously being developed to accommodate the growing number of visitors. Between 2023 and 2024, seven opened across the atolls, bringing the total number of operating resorts to 175, as the Ministry of Tourism reported. The government has played an active role in shaping the Maldives as a tourist hotspot.

While Russian and Chinese tourists have long dominated the market, more Americans are making the trek to the Maldives as interest in eco-tourism grows, Thaufeeq said. Sixty-four percent of Americans surveyed in Booking.com’s 2024 Travel Predictions said they look for sustainable accommodations.

Today’s resorts offer the same beloved beachside experience while pushing the boundaries of what they can offer to travelers.

Part of a Maldivian-owned Sun Siyam Resorts, the all-inclusive Siyam World offers guests more than they could ever imagine to stand out against the many other resorts. 

The 133-acre resort, which opened in 2021, offers the classic sunset cruise, snorkeling, and dolphin cruise excursions, as well as the Indian Ocean’s biggest floating water park and a FIFA-standard soccer field. Guests can also choose from water toys like flyboarding, e-surfing, and the self-proclaimed world’s first underwater jetpack. 

The face of the climate crisis

While frolicking in the water, some tourists may not realize the Maldives is grappling with a climate crisis. 

Sitting at an average of 3.77 feet above sea level, the Maldives is highly vulnerable to coastal erosion and rising sea levels. In 2018, scientists from the United States Geological Survey predicted that as much as 80% of the Maldives could be uninhabitable by 2050. The islands are particularly susceptible to flooding, droughts that affect freshwater access and storm surges. 

Nearly 45% of resorts have reported some kind of beach erosion, according to the 2015 Maldives Climate Change Policy Framework .

The country is moving swiftly to mitigate the negative impacts of climate change. 

“From the very beginning, the Maldivian tourism industry has been rooted in sustainability,” Thaufeeq said, adding that nearly all tourist facilities embrace some sort of sustainability practice. 

In February, the Maldivian government partnered with the U.S. Agency for International Development to launch the Ecotourism Framework and Roadmap , which designated 90 sites as protected and introduced eco-tourism certification. 

The roadmap joins a list of sustainability initiatives in action:

• Since 2022, there’s been a ban on single-use plastic like straws and bags. 
• Rich in sunshine, the country is hoping to become net-zero by 2030 , mainly through solar power. Solar projects are already underway at some resorts.
• The Maldives is also trying to convert solid waste into electricity to replace the former process of burning it on Thilafushi island by 2027. 

“In the breathtaking paradise of the Maldives, sustainable tourism isn't just a concept – it's a commitment to nurturing the very essence of these stunning islands,” said Erkaiym Tabyldieva, sustainability manager at Sun Siyam Iru Fushi, a resort located in the Noonu Atoll. 

The resort received the International Sustainable Award by Luxury Lifestyle Awards in 2023. Not only are plastic bottles eliminated on-property via an in-house water bottling and filtration system, but the resort collaborates with nearby local islands to host educational workshops on sustainability and marine conservation for local youth. The resort also shreds and composts green waste on property. 

Despite resorts like Iru Fushi making every effort, the ongoing rise in sea levels poses an imminent threat to their future.

Tabyldieva said the sustainability team is “continuously brainstorming solutions,” such as implementing seawalls or planting mangrove trees in the near future. 

Responsible tourism

Travelers to the Maldives can reduce their environmental impact on the island nation while immersing themselves in Maldivian culture.

“The Maldives holds an equally vibrant soul, pulsating with a rich cultural heritage that stretches back centuries and awaits you wherever you go,” Thaufeeq said. She recommends travelers go beyond the confines of their resorts and seek out local markets in the capital of Malé – where most travelers fly into before boarding a seaplane to their final destination – or visit a traditional fishing village.

Iru Fushi offers an excursion that takes guests via boat to a nearby island to tour the village and support local shops and restaurants. 

Tabyldieva added that when exploring the ocean, guests should be mindful not to step or touch coral reefs to prevent any damage. Most resorts have an on-site marine biologist ready to educate and help keep the house reef healthy. 

Additionally, individuals can pack their waste, including empty toiletry bottles, to dispose of upon returning home, given the pressing waste management challenges facing the islands.

“Through these mindful actions, your Maldivian journey becomes a mutually enriching experience, fostering a positive impact on both you and the local community,” Thaufeeq said.

'Stop being stubborn, mend ties with neighbours', Maldives president Muizzu told after debt relief appeal to India

N EW DELHI: Former Maldives President Ibrahim Mohamed Solih has urged incumbent President Mohamed Muizzu to stop being "stubborn" and prioritize dialogue to address financial challenges and foster relations with neighbouring countries.

Solih's comments follow Muizzu's recent appeal to India for debt relief, sparking discussions about the nation's financial strategies and geopolitical ties.

Muizzu, 45, succeeded Solih, 62, in the presidential election last September. Speaking at a Male event to support the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) parliamentary candidates, Solih emphasized the need for cooperative engagement with neighboring nations. He highlighted the misrepresentation of financial realities, pointing out that despite owing more to China, Muizzu sought debt restructuring discussions with India.

"However, I am confident that our neighbours will help. We must stop being stubborn and seek dialogue. There are many parties that can help us. But he [Muizzu] doesn't want to compromise. I feel they [the government] are starting to understand the situation only now," Solih said.

Muizzu's stance on India has been contentious, with bilateral relations worsening since his assumption of office. His call for the withdrawal of Indian military personnel further strained ties, despite his subsequent claims of maintaining positive relations. Recent reports indicate Muizzu's conciliatory approach towards India ahead of the upcoming parliamentary elections.

Despite Muizzu's visit to China earlier this year, traditional diplomatic protocols suggest that the first overseas visit for Maldivian presidents is to India. Muizzu's delayed visit has raised eyebrows, especially given India's historical significance as a close ally.

Lok Sabha Elections 2024: RJD gets 26 seats, Congress gets 9 in INDIA bloc's seat-sharing deal in Bihar

The Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) will contest 26 of the state's 40 Lok Sabha seats while the Congress will field candidates in nine seats. The Left parties will contest on five seats, as per the arrangement finalised.

The opposition’s INDIA bloc parties in Bihar announced the seat-sharing formula for the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections on March 29.

The Congress won only one seat while the RJD and Left parties drew a blank in Bihar in 2019 Lok Sabha elections . The NDA alliance, comprising the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Janata Dal (United) 33 seats together. The remaining seats were won by undivided LJP.

The BJP, JD-U and LJP are contesting the Lok Sabha polls together and have also finalised a seat-sharing arrangement in Bihar. The BJP will contest 17 seats and the JD-U on 16 seats. The Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will contest five seats.

The Jitan Ram Manjhi-led Hindustani Aawam Morcha (HAM) and Rashtriya Lok Samta Party (RLSP) will contest one seat each. The Chirag Paswan-led Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) will contest five seats.

The seven-phase Lok Sabha Elections is beginning on April 19. The results will be announced on June 4. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has set a target of 370 seats for the saffron party and over 400 seats for the National Democratic Alliance . 

With 40 seats, Bihar is one of the crucial states considering these targets, more so after Janata Dal United chief Nitish Kumar switched sides to the BJP. 

The JD-U released last week the names of its 16 candidates for the imminent Lok Sabha Elections. 

Bihar is gearing up for a seven-phase election to its 40 Lok Sabha seats. The voting will commence with four seats in the first phase, followed by five seats each in phases 2 to 5. Phases 6 and 7 will witness elections for eight seats each.
