Comparing attractions: which one is right for you.

Hawaii is full of amazing attractions for families, but how do you choose the best one for you?

I’ve tried three of the most popular ones, and here’s what I think.

The Waimea Canyon, Jurassic Falls, & More Helicopter Tour in Kauai is a fantastic way to see the island’s breathtaking scenery from the air.

You’ll feel like a movie star as you soar over green valleys, waterfalls, volcanoes, and the spectacular Na Pali coast.

Compared to other attractions, this one felt incredibly surreal and luxurious.

If you’re looking for an underwater adventure, the Manta Ray Night Dive and Snorkel EcoAdventure in Kailua-Kona is a must-do.

You’ll swim with these gentle giants in the dark and watch them feed on plankton.

It’s hands-on, immersive, and educational, making it a fantastic choice for your family’s little budding marine biologists.

Lastly, the Glass Bottom Boat Tour in Waikiki, Honolulu.

This one is a surefire hit for kids and adults alike.

Gazing at the vibrantly colored marine life through the transparent floor was like peering into a different world.

It’s a fun and informative way to discover Hawaii’s marine life.

Each of these attractions offers a unique perspective of Hawaii’s beauty.

But which is right for you?

Well, that depends on what you’re after: exhilarating heights, intimate wildlife encounters, or serene seascapes.

Either way, you’re in for a Hawaiian treat.

How I Picked The Activities

You might be wondering how I came up with this list of fun things to do in the Aloha State with kids.

Well, let me tell you a little secret.

I didn’t just pick them randomly from a brochure or a website.

I did some research and talked to the tour guides and travelers who have been to these places.

And most importantly, I have experienced them myself with my own family.

So you can trust me when I say these are some of the best attractions in Hawaii for kids of all ages.

They will make your kids fall in love with Hawaii and its culture, nature, and wildlife.

Our Rating Method

I rate these activities based on the following criteria:

 • Age Compatibility: I use this criterion to assess the ideal age range for each attraction. Is this activity suitable for toddlers, preschoolers, or young children? Will teenagers and tweens enjoy this attraction? I ask myself these questions whenever I assess age compatibility.
 • Educational Value: This is used to evaluate the educational benefits that the activity offers. Does the activity provide learning opportunities to children? Does it teach them lessons in science and history? I ask myself these important questions when rating the activity’s educational value.
 • Fun Factor: This measures the level of excitement, engagement, and enjoyment that the activity offers. Is it engaging and enjoyable for kids? Will it create memorable and positive experiences for families? These questions are important whenever I rate the activity’s fun factor.
 • Accessibility: This measures how accessible the activity is for families. Is it wheelchair accessible? Is it easily accessible by public transportation? Does it have ample parking space? I consider these factors when evaluating the accessibility of every activity.
 • Affordability: This assesses the value of money provided by the activity. Are the admission fees reasonable? Does it offer deals or discounts for families? I use these questions to evaluate the affordability of every attraction.

Conclusion

We’ve explored the magic and variety of activities in Hawaii in this article.

After going through each one, one adventure outshines the rest of our list of fun things to do in Hawaii with kids.

My top choice, the Waimea Canyon, Jurassic Falls, & More Helicopter Tour in Kauai, is a cinematic escape into a tropical paradise.

This thrilling journey stands out with its exclusive access to untouched locations and mesmerizing aerial views.

Compared to the Manta Ray Night Dive’s marine wonders and the Glass Bottom Boat Tour’s aquatic kaleidoscope, the helicopter tour offers an elevated perspective of Hawaii.

Every family adventure in Hawaii is uniquely captivating, but soaring above the islands is an unforgettable experience that will etch itself into your family’s memory forever.

From the Caribbean to Hawaii, there are tons of sun-kissed island destinations to consider for your next vacation. The Aloha State — one of the 50 best places to travel in 2023 , according to Travel + Leisure — is paradise for families with stunning natural scenery, activities galore, and many kid-friendly beach resorts.

As someone who globe-trots with an adorable tot, I’m always searching for properties that go the extra mile for guests of all ages. In Hawaii, that looks like a jam-packed daily activity schedule to keep active youngsters busy, plus kids clubs and teen hang-out zones. In terms of facilities, you’ll want a pool with a shallow end (ideally a splash pad, too), gardens to explore, and direct access to a beach with calm surf and soft sand. Spacious accommodations with room to fit pack-and-plays, cribs, or rollaway beds are a must, and amenities like mini robes and slippers, bins for diapers (when needed), and high chairs are a bonus. Kids menus and free meals for the youngest guests go a long way in keeping costs down, too. And, of course, on-site babysitting services come in handy when parents want to sneak away for a spa treatment or dinner for two. It’s a tall order, but there’s a perfect spot for every family thanks to the myriad options across the archipelago.

Scroll on for the best family resorts in Hawaii, according to parents and travel pros.

The complimentary kids program keeps kiddos busy with tennis and swimming while parents peel off to the spa or serenity pool. Sophisticated, spacious accommodations can be stocked with strollers, baby monitors, high chairs, and swings, guaranteeing a stylish, comfortable space for everyone to spread out.

Montage Kapalua Bay, Maui

Tucked away a bit further south on the island of Maui, Montage Kapalua Bay — also voted one of the best resorts in Hawaii by T+L readers — is well worth the splurge with a peaceful location, luxurious accommodations, and five-star amenities — including a spate of family-friendly perks. After a day of hula lessons, lei making, strumming ukuleles, nature walks, swimming like a mermaid, and collecting Montage Merit Badges with the Paintbox children’s program, kids can chow down on Hawaiian cuisine, go stargazing, and fall asleep to the sound of the waves.

Turtle Bay Resort, O’ahu

Keen to plan a vacation that will make every member of your crew as happy as a clam? Turtle Bay Resort covers 1,300 acres of natural splendor on the North Shore of O‘ahu. “Featuring seven gorgeous beaches, multiple swimming pools, oceanfront bungalows, and a wide range of activities — from snorkeling with sea turtles and learning to surf alongside a pro to horseback riding to hula lessons — the legendary property leaves families with wonderful memories to last a lifetime,” says Chris Paterson, owner and operator of Kailani Tours Hawaii .

Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection, Island of Hawaii

Also voted one of the best resorts in Hawaii by T+L readers, Mauna Lani, Auberge Resorts Collection is a really special place for family vacations with a deeply rooted ethos that reflects the spirit of Hawaii. “Guests feel the integral connection between land and sea running through each dish at CanoeHouse, the culturally immersive activities — from cooking classes to moonlight storytelling — at the complimentary kids club, and in the beautifully decorated accommodations,” notes Carolyn Addison, head of product at Black Tomato . There’s also a world-class spa and babysitting services for when parents need a little adult time.

Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa, O’ahu

Courtesy of Walt Disney World

If your kids have been begging to go to Disney World, but you’d rather jet off to Hawaii, Aulani, a Disney Resort & Spa , might just be the perfect solution. Situated on the leeward coast of O‘ahu, it has a beach and private saltwater snorkeling lagoon, six pools, water slides, a lazy river, and a cove splash zone. Lū’aus with a special island buffet for pint-sized palates, lei making, and hula lessons bring Hawaiian culture to guests. Kiddos still get the chance to snap photos with everyone’s favorite characters, eat Mickey waffles, and watch classic animated movies on the outdoor screen.

Four Seasons Resort Hualalai, Island of Hawaii

Glamorous but not so chichi that children receive side-eyes from other guests, the Four Seasons Resort Hualalai — also voted one of the best resorts in Hawaii for 2023 — attracts families with a penchant for fun and the finer things. Perched on the Kona Coast of the Big Island, the five-star property provides sandy beaches with calm waters, seven pools, a complimentary kids program, Camp Manitou for tweens and teens, and endless activities. “Want to try ukulele lessons or get a close-up look at sea creatures alongside marine biologists? It’s all possible,” adds Paterson.

Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort, Island of Hawaii

“The highly anticipated Kona Village, A Rosewood Resort opened to much acclaim recently — and for good reason,” says Addison. It’s a serene, luxurious, eco-focused Big Island retreat that’s expressly perfect for multi-generational families with a warm generosity of spirit and awesome amenities. Kids stay — and play — in style at the private beaches, pool, and Rosewood Explorer’s Keiki Club. “In addition to kayaking, sailing lessons, paddleboarding, and an interactive cultural center, the property even has a ‘cinema under the stars’ on the sand to watch movies together."

The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua, Maui

Ranked among the best resorts in Hawaii for 2023, The Ritz-Carlton Maui, Kapalua pulls out all the stops for travelers of all ages. Tucked away on 54 tropical acres, the resort boasts glistening beaches, fragrant gardens, two championship golf courses, six dining venues, luxurious residences, and a century-old pineapple plantation. Ambassadors of the Environment, a program in partnership with Jean-Michel Cousteau’s Ocean Futures Society, teaches younger guests to be stewards of the land and sea through hands-on experiences such as snorkeling excursions, beach cleanups, and planting native seeds.

1 Hotel Hanalei Bay, Kauai

“I love 1 Hotel Hanalei Bay for its minimalist luxury aesthetic, commitment to sustainability, and breathtaking surroundings that seem plucked right from Jurassic Park ,” says Addison. The brand’s new oceanfront outpost on the North Shore of Kauai is also very welcoming to families. The onsite Seedlings kids club offers a plethora of activities and experiences aimed at connecting young ones with the natural world. The transformative wellness rituals at the renowned Bamford Spa are a high point for many stressed-out parents. And everyone comes together for cooking classes, yoga, surfing, and bonfires under the stars.

Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui

Courtesy of Fairmont Kea Lani

Families absolutely love Fairmont Kea Lani, Maui . More than just a prime spot for fun in the sun, T+L readers ranked it as one of the best resorts in Hawaii this year because of its superb amenities and accommodations. Spend your days building sandcastles on Polo Beach, swimming in the pools, taking afternoon naps in the cabanas, and snacking on sweet treats at Makana Market + Cafe. All the one-bedroom suites are large enough for a crew of four. Of course, it’s also possible to upgrade to a palatial villa with a full kitchen, private courtyard, plunge pool, and grill if that’s more your vacation style.

Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa, Kauai

Courtesy of Hyatt Hotels & Resorts

Endless activities and kids-oriented amenities — plus a championship golf course and a 45,000-square-foot spa — make Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa the perfect family escape, according to Paterson. Hours of splashing around in the multi-level pools and saltwater lagoon, floating down the lava-rock-lined lazy river, whizzing down the 150-foot water slide, and playing a game of water volleyball or basketball are guaranteed to tucker out kiddos. While little ones nap in the generously sized guest room, parents will enjoy reading a book on the private lanai.

Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu, Autograph Collection, Kauai

Basking in the sun and frolicking in the water comes with the territory at Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu, Autograph Collection . Located on the sunny south shore of Kauai, the family-oriented property possesses three sparkling pools — most notably for youngsters and young-at-heart adults, a 350,000-gallon main pool with water slides and cascades — a putting green, a volleyball court, a soccer field, and the largest accommodations in the area. As if all that wasn’t enough to keep keiki entertained, little explorers get binoculars, compasses, and activity books full of clues for hours of creative play.

Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa, Maui

Looking for a family-friendly place to stay in Maui ? Paterson recommends Hyatt Regency Maui Resort & Spa because of the giant maze of pools, waterfalls, whirlpools, rope bridges, and slides. The breakfast buffet is filled with favorites like homemade pastries, pancakes, and waffles. Many of the newly renovated rooms have two queen beds — an ideal setup for teens who don’t want to share. The slow rolling waves at Ka‘anapali Beach mean days spent splashing, floating, and swimming. Lū‘aus, rooftop stargazing, and golf also rank among the highlights.

The Flight to Hawaii

From anywhere on the U.S. Mainland, a flight to Hawaii is pretty long. The shortest flight you can get to the Islands from the continental United States is a five- or six-hour flight from Los Angeles. If you’re anywhere farther east, you’ll have an even longer flight.

Unless your kids are used to cross-country or international trips, this might be a tough flight length to survive. However, you can make it fun and smooth. Before your trip, pack airplane goodie bags for your kids. It can be extra-exciting to let your kids know they'll be getting some travel gifts and surprises, but let the contents of the bags be a surprise.

Pack snacks, games, toys, and activity books for the kids, depending on their ages and interests. Audiobooks and the like might also be fun for older kids. If your kids are interested in the scientific or historic side of Hawaii, give them learning resources so they can educate themselves on Hawaii a bit before they land.

Destinations

The Hawaiian Islands offer many wonderful family destinations. You won’t have any trouble finding plenty of things to do, but you might have a hard time narrowing down your options! Here are the top kid-friendly locations for the most popular islands:

Hawaii- The Big Island

Hawaii’s Big Island has so much to offer. There are so many distinct cultures, various climates, and fascinating attractions here. One minute you’re in a resort town, and the next you’ll be in a mango grove. You can hike the mountains, surf the seas, or wander the towns. No matter what you choose to do, you’re sure to fall in love with the Big Island.

There’s a lot to see on Hawaii’s Big Island , but the coolest activity just might be a trip to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park– the site of an active volcano known as Kilauea. Take a hike through the tropical rainforest and walk among the smoking vents. Or, just stop by the Visitor Center and gaze over the volcano from the viewing deck. If you’re lucky, you might get to see lava glowing orange in the night!

Hawaii Island also has many spectacular beaches . You can check out some of the most popular ones, like Hapuna Beach, for great surf, sand, and sun. If you want to see a unique beach with your family, Punaluu is a cool stop. This black sand beach is home to plenty of marine life, including sea turtles.

One of the most memorable family experiences on the Big Island is attending a luau. Check out Island Breeze Luau for an unforgettable cultural show. Your kids will learn to dance the hula and everyone can savor traditionally-cooked Hawaiian food.

Hawaii is a great place for the kids to snorkel and explore

Oahu- The Gathering Place

Oahu is one of the most popular Hawaiian destinations for families, and it’s easy to see why. From kid-friendly beaches to child-oriented activities, Oahu is an awesome destination people of all ages will love.

Start your Oahu adventures with a Disney Luau, as this event is created just for families. It includes lei-making and temporary tattoos as well as traditional dancing. Of course, you’ll also get to meet Moana in the process!

Waikiki Beach is the most popular hang-out spot in Oahu. This beach is located on the edge of downtown Honolulu, so you can grab a bite to eat or pick up souvenirs when you’ve had enough sun.

Oahu is also the perfect place to learn to surf... and even kids can try to catch a wave. There are many surf schools available, but one of the coolest is Hans Hedemann Surf School, where your kids can join a surfing rescue dog, which makes the experience extra fun.

Finally, don’t miss out on the chance to enjoy a real submarine ride . Atlantis Submarine, for example, tours take families 100 feet underwater to see marine life and learn reef science. You’ll love the opportunity to explore Hawaii’s reefs while staying safe, dry, and comfortable.

Waikiki Beach is a favorite of adults and kids alike

Maui- The Valley Isle

Many visitors consider Maui to be the most beautiful Hawaiian island. Take your kids here for an experience of the Islands’ natural world!

A great way to kick off your ocean adventures is with a Maui snorkeling tour. Older kids will love swimming among the colorful fish, spotting fascinating marine life, and marveling at the intricacies of the coral. Maui is home to some of the world’s best snorkeling, so don’t miss it.

Are your kids mermaids and mermen at heart? Then book mermaid lessons at Hawaii Mermaid Adventures! Your kids will learn how to splash, glide, and spin in the ocean with a mermaid tail.

If your kids aren’t quite ready to swim in the ocean with marine life, you can still take them to see animals up close. Maui Ocean Center is Hawaii's top-rated aquarium, and it has an astounding amount of marine life on display.

The Maui Ocean Center is full of surprises

Kauai- The Garden Isle

Kauai is an island for the adventurous. If your family loves to try new experiences and get the adrenaline pumping, you’ll be right at home on the Garden Isle.

Some of Hawaii’s best horseback riding is offered on Kauai. Ride through a tropical rainforest to a waterfall deep in the heart of the emerald mountains. Or, take a horseback tour through the island to discover more about this enchanting place.

If you want to see the island at top-speed, try a Kauai zipline tour . Fly through the trees and get the best birds-eye views of Kauai! Many people think ziplining is the most exciting way to explore this lush green paradise.

When it’s time for the grownups to relax while the little ones burn off a little excess energy, head to Kamalani Playground; a huge play space that’s sure to delight the littlest Hawaiian adventurers.

Where to Stay in Hawaii

Hawaii is a popular destination for travelers of all kinds... retirees, relaxers, adventurers, and more. Of course, not all Hawaiian accommodations are suitable for kids. Some places are popular with the party crowd, while other places are so remote that keeping the kids entertained can be a challenge. However, there are also many options that offer the perfect blend of quiet, safety, and fun for families.

Book a Resort

Resorts are easy and luxurious options for family vacations. There are countless family-friendly resorts in Hawaii, but some of them really stand out. The most fabulous resort is the famous Waikiki Beach Resort. Stay at the Hilton Hawaiian Village here for great views and beach access right outside the door.

If you’re staying in Maui, the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa is a great family option. Or, stay at the Moana Surfrider Resort and Spa on Oahu. Of course, you can’t beat Aulani Disney Resort & Spa on Oahu! With the beach, pools, and a waterpark for entertainment, you won’t ever have to leave the resort (but we're sure you'll want to in order to explore more).

Family-friendly resorts offer luxury and comfort

Stay in a Hotel

If you’d prefer to spend your vacation dollars on activities rather than accommodations, there are plenty of affordable hotels in Hawaii that cater to families.

If you’re staying in Oahu, Coconut Waikiki Hotel is a great option. This hotel has large rooms with kitchenettes, plus onsite dining and kids' packages.

For an authentic Hawaiian experience, you can even stay on a working farm. One great option is North Country Farms in Kauai. Your kids will surely love interacting with the animals and learning how tropical fruits are farmed.

For a unique stay on the Big Island, book a room at Lotus Garden Cottages. They are conveniently located near HVNP and all cottages feature a kitchenette, which can be very handy with picky eaters. Plus, the cottages are all beautifully appointed and are located in a breathtaking setting that you and the kids will enjoy.

Rent a Beach House

Renting a beach house is undoubtedly one of the best ways to stay as a family in Hawaii. They offer ample space and freedom, and you won’t have to worry about having loud neighbors—or being loud neighbors. If you pick the right place, it can also be a lot more affordable to stay in a beach house rather than a resort or even a hotel. Look on the Hilo side of the Big Island for wonderful options.

Renting a beach house can be very affordable for families with kids

So there you have it. Traveling to Hawaii with the kids truly is an experience you won't want to miss. Make incredible family memories as you swim with sea turtles, make sand castles on the shore, and discover the natural world of Hawaii. There are so many kid-friendly activities, adventures, and accommodations. Start planning now to make your (and your kids') vacation dreams come true soon.

Happy traveling!

1. Stay on One Hawaiian Island

When people hear you are “going to Hawaii” for the first time, you will almost always get asked, “which islands are you visiting?”

In the past, when airfare was cheap and regulations were lax, it was easy to visit two or three different islands in a single week-long Hawaii vacation.

Today, however, you are better to decide which island you want to go to and enjoy that one, exploring its unique wonders, and then plan a return trip.

In many ways, Hawaii is a paradox. While it is a series of islands, people underestimate how big the state is as well as how big and diverse the individual islands are as well.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Wide Angle Tikis at Place of Refuge (Pu'uhonua o Honaunau National Historical Park) in Kona Hawaii

For instance, on a visit to “ The Big Island ,” you can experience a tropical jungle on the east side, an arid desert on the west, grasslands to the north, and some of the tallest mountains in the United States in the middle.

A similar diversity can be found on the other islands, both in terms of geography as well as culture, and food.

As a result, while “ island hopping ” might be a fun concept, there’s really no need to do it since you can visit one Hawaiian island and never see all of it even on a week-long Hawaiian vacation.

2. Try the Local Food When You Visit Hawaii for the First Time

When you visit Hawaii, you’ll want to try the local food. On my first visit to Hawaii, I quickly fell in love with poke.

This delicious dish consists of tuna or another type of seafood chopped up and marinated with spices, sauces, and vegetables. You can get a variety of poke, whether you’re looking for a spicy one or a sweeter poke.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Oahu poke places are all the rage because they are usually portable like this one

You’ll never find fresher poke than when you’re visiting Hawaii, as many times the fish is caught that morning.

When I visited the Big Island , I stopped at Da Poke Brothers almost daily. You typically eat this with rice and sides like seaweed salad or macaroni salad.

I also recommend stopping at a small, local restaurant to try poke instead of eating it at a chain restaurant. You’ll get the experience of talking to the owners and learning more about the business that you’re supporting while on your Hawaii vacation.

3. Don’t Go to a Luau on Your First Night

For most first-time visitors to Hawaii, going to a luau is high on their bucket list! It’s a great opportunity to see parts of traditional Hawaiian culture and eat wonderful food.

Luau tickets aren’t cheap, so you’ll want to make the most of the experience.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Hula dancers pose at the Aha Aina Luau on Oahu

One way to make sure you really enjoy your first luau is to schedule it for the end of your time in Hawaii.

No matter where you’re coming from, you’ll face a big time change when you go to Hawaii – 2-3 hours for west coasters and a whopping 5-6 hours for east coasters depending on the time of year!

Since most luaus don’t end until late at night, if you buy tickets for the beginning of your Hawaii vacation you’ll feel like a zombie before the first hula is over.

So do yourself a favor: plan your luau as a way to celebrate the end of your trip to Hawaii, not the beginning.

Melissa Conn from The Family Voyage

4. Use Reef Safe Sunscreen

When visiting Hawaii for the first time, one thing you’ll need to know is to use reef-safe sunscreen.

What is one of the very best things about visiting Hawaii? That amazing Pacific Ocean you get to swim in! The beautiful blue waters, colorful fish, sea turtles, and all of that coral reef that you find everywhere around the islands.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Snorkeling woman exploring beautiful ocean sealife, underwater photography. Travel lifestyle, water sport outdoor activities, swimming and snorkeling on summer beach holidays.

However, when you are snorkeling or scuba diving , you need to make sure to protect the reef by using the correct sunscreen.

Many sunscreens you buy and bring to Hawaii have an ingredient called oxybenzone in them, which is very harmful to the coral reef systems in Hawaii. The chemical bleaches the reefs, ridding them of their color, and sometimes die altogether.

Most sunscreens you can purchase on the islands are reef safe, however it is best to make sure. In addition, if you are on a scuba or snorkel excursion, many times they will offer reef safe sunscreen for free.

All in all, one of the best things you can do in Hawaii is get out into the water and see the beautiful coral reef. Just make sure that you are using reef safe sunscreen when you are getting into that beautiful water!

5. Research Beaches Before You Go

On your first trip to Hawaii, I’d be willing to bet that heading to the beach is at the very top of your agenda. And if you’re traveling to Hawaii with kids , I’m sure they can’t wait to play in the waves!

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Poipu Beach is a kid-friendly Kauai beach for families on the South Shore of Kauai

While beaches all over the islands can look peaceful and serene, it is imperative that you understand that Hawaii’s position in the ocean makes for unique and dangerous conditions.

Do some research before you get to the island to determine the most family-friendly beaches, and stick with those.

One of my personal favorites is Lydgate Beach on Kauai , with two protected swimming lagoons. Opt for lifeguarded beaches, and always check the beach warning signs when you get there.

It sounds great to just wander out and find a serene, secluded stretch of sand somewhere, but there are often hidden dangers that continental beaches just don’t have to contend with. This doesn’t just go for families with kids – adults need to be equally cautious!

Hawaiian beaches are incredible, and should absolutely be the first thing you do when you get to the island! But be smart about water safety and have a plan for where to swim.

6. Always Check the Weather Before Hiking

Before going on any hike, it is very important to check the weather and floodplains. If there is a possibility of rain, look to see if your hike goes through a floodplain or crosses any rivers.

If it does, there is a chance for a rapid rise in water levels or water overflowing into the area you are hiking.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Young male tourist hiking on beautiful Pololu loop trail located near Kapaau, Hawaii, that features beautiful wild flowers and stunning views to the Pololu Valley. Big Island, Hawaii.

When visiting a friend on Oahu , we did a spur-of-the-moment hike and didn’t look to see if it would rain. Partway through our hike, we got caught in heavy downpour. We didn’t mind and decided to keep going.

Unfortunately, the rain didn’t stop and we didn’t realize how wide the rivers were that we needed to cross.

When we reached the first river, we didn’t think we were too far from the end and decided to cross instead of going back up and down the mountain, which we felt would be too dangerous since it had been raining heavily for hours by this point.

It was above our knees. We soon reached the second river, which we could see rising rapidly from all the rain.

It was very scary and taught us to always check weather and floodplains before doing any hike.

7. Do Your Own Circle Island Tour of Oahu

If you are visiting Hawaii and most likely Oahu for the first time, enjoy your visit to Honolulu and Waikiki and that part of paradise.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Tourist on Hawaii taking photo with camera phone during car road trip on the famous Road to Hana

But if you really want to get a flavor of the entire island, go on a circle island tour . Or better yet, rent a car and do your own circle island tour, which is a fantastic way to experience the best and rest of the island.

On a tour, you can choose where you want to go, the attractions that appeal to you or just do a fantastic drive with coastal views and find some nice scenic spots along the way to enjoy and photograph.

You can visit popular attractions including Pearl Harbor , the Dole Plantation , Haleiwa , and the North Shore area with the Banzai pipeline, Sharks cove and into the gorgeous eastern coastlines.

Along the way there, you can visit the Mormon temple, Byodo-In Temple and the stunning beaches at Lanikai and Kailua beach . It’s up to you to pick and choose what you want to do and see.

For more inspiration, check out my tour of the North Shore of Oahu here for more images and popular things to do and see in the area.

Noel Morata from This Hawaii Life

8. Take a North Shore Tour

With just three days in Oahu, I was overwhelmed with the tens of things to see and do with so little time.

I wanted to see the best of Oahu’s North Shore without the hassle of renting a car, traffic, and parking.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Nothing is more iconic that this Haleiwa sign as you enter North Shore Oahu

Instead, I packed a dry bag with a bikini, snorkel set, and sturdy shoes and hopped on the Surf Bus, a small group tour that stops at a handful of places around Oahu rather than at every noteworthy destination.

Rather than being stuck on a bus all day, I had plenty of time to snorkel , hike , and go on a kayaking excursion. The day ended with a heaping pile of shave ice .

A North Shore tour of Oahu with just a few stops is the best way to make the most of a short stay in Oahu.

Or, if you’re planning to stay a while, it’s best to do this tour at the beginning of your trip to Hawaii to get a feel for what parts of the island are worth venturing back to for full trips.

9. Snorkel with Manta Rays

An absolute must-do activity when you visit Hawaii is to snorkel or dive with manta rays at night.

Manta rays are enormous, with a wingspan of up to 29 feet! Seeing them is an amazing once-in-a-lifetime experience.

13 Tips for Visiting Hawaii for the First Time featured by top Hawaii blog, Hawaii Travel with Kids: Manta Ray in Hawaii

Multiple boats leave from leave late every afternoon from Kailua-Kona on the Big Island . A nearby site has been set with enormous floodlights permanently mounted to the seabed in a large circle.

As dusk turns to dark, the lights are turned on. The light attracts swarms of microscopic, invisible-to-the-eye plankton.

Plankton are manta rays’ main food source, so their presence in turn attracts the mantas. Divers sit around the circle of lights and snorkelers hold on to large rafts on the surface above them.

Before long, enormous creatures swoop out of the darkness, mouth wide open to scoop up the plankton. They turn and twist and glide around above the lights, often just below the surface (and snorkelers). It is a truly incredible sight!

Kids over the age of five can snorkel. Divers need to be certified. The site is open throughout the year, and although it is not guaranteed to see the manta rays, chances are good because of the lights/ plankton. Check out more Big Island Manta Ray snorkel tips.

10. Hike to Papakolea Green Sand Beach On The Big Island

Papakolea Beach is a green sand beach located on the most southern point on the Big Island , Hawaii. With only three green sand beaches in the world and one being in Hawaii, it’s a great opportunity for a great adventure.

Image of Papakolea Green Sand Beach in Kona, Big Island

You can get to this beach by taking highway 11, to the road to South Point between mile marker 69 and 70 to the end where you’ll find a parking lot. You can park your car there. This is where your hiking experience will start.

The hike is about 2.8 miles and even though it can be hot, it’s a somewhat easy hike, my eight year old daughter had no problem doing it and you’ll witness some of the most beautiful landscapes.

There are drivers waiting at the beginning of the hike to take you all the way to the beach for a fee but driving there is illegal.

When you get there you have to climb down the cinder cone but don’t worry, it’s totally doable with children.

When you plan your hike, make sure you’ll have plenty of water, food/snacks, sunscreen, sunglasses, hat and appropriate attire since there are no shaded areas or any food vendors at the Green Beach.

This is a once in a lifetime venture for some people and you’ll be amazed by the beauty and the uniqueness of this gorgeous beach.

11. Spend a Whole Day at The Polynesian Cultural Center when Visiting Hawaii for the First Time

Originally, I thought it was just a luau and show but, I learned that it is actually an all-day attraction. There are villages located all around the center representing different islands in the Pacific. At each location, there are arts, crafts, or shows.

Laie, Oahu, Hawaii, USA. - January 09, 2020: Polynesian Cultural Center. Monumental gate into the park with brown giant aboriginal statues. People and green vegetation under blue sky.

We spent much of the day learning and laughing. Some of the shows are very funny and extremely entertaining.

Our favorite shows were the water show called Huki, which told a history of how the Polynesian Cultural Center was formed, and Ha Breath of life was another amazing show with fire twirlers!

We loved our time there and I know you will love it too!

Tip – When you purchase your ticket s make sure to upgrade to the luau. We made the mistake and ended up purchasing a buffet and didn’t realize it did not include the show.

Lisa Manderino from Planning Away

12. Volunteer with a Non-Profit

There is no shortage of amazing tours to enjoy in Hawaii. As a former sea kayak guide and SUP instructor at Kailua Beach Adventures on Oahu, I can wholeheartedly recommend that you rent a kayak or take a guided tour in the beautiful Kailua Bay!

However, beyond all of the sites to see and tours to take, I recommend that you do some research and find a local non-profit to give your time to. This is an amazing way to give back to the communities of Hawaii while digging into the local culture. Quite literally!

At Papahana Kuaola, you can sign-up for one of their many volunteer days to work in their taro patches and learn about the root vegetable that has been at the core of Hawaiian’s diets for centuries.

It’s incredibly refreshing to participate in something that is less transnational in nature and that exists to serve local communities.

Although these experiences may be seemingly less glamorous, the experiences in which I connect with locals and in the case of the taro patches – get my hands a little dirty – have been the ones that I remember most fondly.

13. Go Ziplining when Visiting Hawaii for the First Time

Ziplining can be considered an extreme activity but once you have done it you are hooked (no pun intended). With so many options of tours and experiences to enjoy in Hawaii, it can be challenging to decide on which one to go for.

Image of a woman wearing a red tank top going ziplining in Hawaii

For our family, ziplining was on top of the list, as a matter of fact, this was my daughter’s favorite and since we had her with us we had to drive to Hilo and find a company that would allow kids.

It was totally worth the drive, not only to visit some of the sites on that side of the Island, but the company we chose was amazing. The staff was so attentive to my daughter, they even went tandem with her since she was very light for one of the long lines.

On our 4-hour zipline excursion, we got to zipline over a couple of waterfalls and some beautiful landscapes.

If ziplining is on your bucket list, Hawaii is definitely worth a try. Just don’t forget to book in advance since the choices of companies that allow kids are very limited.

First Time to Hawaii FAQs

Usually, I recommend that first timers start off with a trip to Oahu. It’s the most popular Hawaiian island, as well as the cheapest. Plus there are tons of attractions, activities, great food, and shopping. That’s why I think it’s the best island to visit in Hawaii for the first time.

Are you hoping to save money in Hawaii? You can totally plan an affordable Hawaii vacation by traveling during shoulder season (mid-April to June and September to mid-December.) Plus, there are tons of free things to do in Hawaii.

Hawaii doesn’t participate in daylight savings time. So, they are 2-3 hours behind the West Coast, 3-4 hours behind Mountain Time, 4-5 hours behind Central Time, and 5-6 hours behind the East Coast.

You’ll definitely need I.D., and a passport (if you are traveling from outside the U.S.) And be sure to check to see if there are any Hawaii travel restrictions in place.

I was just looking over my blog and realized I haven’t done a Kauai family travel guide! I’ve visited Kauai, Hawaii approximately 40 times since I was 10 years old. My grandma used to live part-time on Kauai when I was growing up.

My mom has been living on Kauai for the past 10 years. She’s a Kauai wedding officiant and knows a lot of the best Kauai beaches for families and things to do on Kauai with kids .

So, I conferred with her to make sure all my info was up to date and she added in some unique things to do on Kauai.

Don’t have time to read a bunch of Hawaii blog posts and reviews? Here are some of our top picks for visiting Kauai.

Popular Kauai Tours/Activities

 • Na Pali Coast Snorkeling Tour (this one also goes to the forbidden island of Ni’ihau)
 • Kauai Helicopter Tour (this is the BEST way to see waterfalls on Kauai)
 • ATV Tour to a Private Waterfall (this is a romantic adventure that feels like a secret getaway)
 • Mountain Tubing (this is a low-key adventure down an old sugar cane canal)
 • Luau Kalamaku (you can do a little train ride and feed farm animals before the luau)
 • Book a Photo Shoot (this is a Hawaii souvenir you’ll treasure forever)

Favorite Kauai Resorts/Hotels

 • Grand Hyatt Kauai (this Poipu resort has a luxurious pool area, romantic restaurants, and a stunning ocean view)
 • Ko l oa Landing Resort (this is a luxury resort with an amazing pool area and truly spacious rooms)
 • Royal Sonesta Kauai (we LOVE the pool here because it’s the largest one in Hawaii)

Best Time to Visit Kauai

Personally, I like to visit Kauai in the fall (specifically October) or the spring (specifically May).

Summertime, especially end of July and August, the Kauai weather can be quite humid and hot. I love being warm and I don’t mind the humidity, but these months are a bit too much for me.

And wintertime can be hit/miss with the weather.

This past winter/spring, Kauai was hit with flooding that has impacted the North Shore a lot.

Lihue Airport

As far as airports go, the Lihue Airport on Kauai is pretty small. In fact, their baggage claim only has 2 carousels.

When you get off the plane, just follow the crowd and you’ll wind up at baggage claim. They do have baggage carts available to rent.

Since it can take awhile before the bags come out, I like to use the restroom and then pick up brochures and tourist magazines so I can thumb through them later (they have lots of coupons inside.)

For Kauai, I highly recommend you rent a car . There’s just so much to see and do. The car rental stands are right there at the airport. There are also some budget-friendly car rental options off-site.

For your flight home, you’ll need to go through their agricultural inspection, so don’t try to take home any fruit or plants. There’s also a Starbucks you can hit up as soon as you get past security.

Where to Stay on Kauai

Kauai is basically a circle with one highway. But, the highway doesn’t go completely around the island. It stops at the Na Pali coast.

So if you are staying on the North Shore and want to go to the West Shore, you have to drive 3/4 around the island to get there. And the traffic on Kauai is no joke.

The most important thing to think about when figuring out where to stay on Kauai is your vacation itinerary.

Are you planning on driving around the island a few days? Do you have scheduled activities somewhere? Would you like to stay at a resort and just relax?

And, think about if you want to stay at one of the Kauai beachfront hotels or somewhere off the beaten path.

NORTH SHORE

The North Shore is simply stunning. It’s where they filmed South Pacific back in the day and countless other movies like The Descendants , Pirates of the Caribbean , etc.

It’s the perfect place if you are looking for a romantic getaway and want the quaint Hawaiian experience.

I usually don’t recommend it for families with young children because the beaches aren’t kid-friendly and it’s the rainy side of the island.

Photo of the St. Regis Princeville hotel on the North Shore of Kauai, Hawaii. It's one of the best places to stay on Kauai #kauai #hawaii #kauaihotel #resort #stregis #stregisprinceville #stregiskauai

The St. Regis Princeville Hotel is the creme de la creme of Hawaiian resorts. The St. Regis has an amazing spa, an infinity pool, golf course, tennis courts, etc.

Kids ages 5-12 can participate in the Young Voyagers Club, a drop off kids club. They even offer delectable treats, child-sized robes, slippers, and a step stool for the little ones.

This hotel is currently under renovation and should open in 2021.

The Westin Princeville Ocean Resort Villas is about half the price of the St. Regis. It’s not a budget Kauai hotel, but moderately priced. They feature 4 heated swimming pools, a golf course, and a spa.

For kids ages 5-12, they have the Westin Kids Club with interactive programming, custom travel journal, local activity guide, and more.

It’s the best Kauai hotel for families wanting a luxury stay in a resort town.

The Cliffs at Princeville is another moderately priced accommodation on Kauai. They offer one bedroom suites and two bedroom/loft floor plans, which is awesome when traveling with kids.

Plus, their suites are twice the size of standard hotel rooms. They have fully equipped kitchens, so you can save money by cooking in the condo.

My mom lives in Kapaa and so that’s where my family always stays on Kauai.

For families traveling with small children, I usually tell them the East Shore is the best area to stay in Kauai for two reasons:

 • SHOPPING: It’s close to Costco, Walmart, and several grocery stores. That makes it easy to stock up on food, diapers, formula, extra swimsuits, the sunscreen you forgot to pack, pool floaties, etc.
 • CENTRAL LOCATION: Staying on the East Shore makes it easy to check the weather and then head North, South or West to chase the sun and avoid rain. And it makes it easier to come back for naps.

Photo of the Kauai Marriott Resort in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii on Kalapaki Beach near the cruise ship terminal #kauai #hawaii #kauaimarriott #kauairesort #kauaimarriottresort #kauaihotel

The Kauai Marriott Resort is my pick for the best family hotel on Kauai. They have one of the largest heated outdoor pools in Hawaii.

The Kauai Marriott Resort features 5 restaurants/bars, a spa, a golf course, and they are right at Kalapaki Beach, which is kid-friendly.

Plus, the Kalapaki Kids Club is available both mornings and nights if you want some kid-free time. And they offer a free shuttle to the airport.

The Aston Islander on the Beach is a low-rise hotel. Their beachfront pool area offers barbecue areas, a large, sparkling pool, jet spa and a poolside bar.

They have on-site laundry, which is so helpful for families! And they offer free shuttle service to the airport.

What I like about this location is that you can walk to Safeway, Foodland, and a lot of affordable restaurants and shops.

The Plantation Hale Suites were recently renovated. They have large rooms and full kitchens.

It’s the perfect place to stay on Kauai if you are planning on exploring the island and then coming back to the hotel to cool off in the pool, cook dinner and rest.

SOUTH SHORE

The South Shore is notorious for almost always being sunny. And there are lots of calm, kid-friendly beaches.

And there are tons of South Shore Kauai resorts for families .

Photo of the Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa in Poipu, Kauai, Hawaii. It's one of the top Kauai hotels for families on the South Shore | beachfront hotels kauai

The Grand Hyatt Kauai Resort & Spa is my pick for the ultimate swanky place to stay on Kauai with kids.

Drop the kids off at Camp Hyatt Kauai a fun, active program exclusively for children ages 3 to 12. Then, enjoy a day at the spa or playing golf. They also offer golf club rentals there.

You can also play in their “river pools” that wind through waterfalls and grottos. Kids of all ages will love their 150-foot water slide. And they have an adult-only pool.

We were here on our last trip and it’s definitely one of the best places to stay in Kauai with kids!

The Koloa Landing Resort at Poipu is an Autograph Collection hotel. When you arrive, staff give you a fresh flower lei and a mai tai (or fruit punch.)

This hotel features 3 lagoon pools, including a 350,000-gallon signature pool complete with cabanas, swim-through waterfalls, water slide, and a walk-through grotto.

They offer a variety of room sizes to fit all families and fully stocked gourmet kitchens or kitchenettes so you can cook yourself.

It’s the best hotel in Kauai for getting the ultimate Instagram photo!

If you’re wondering where to stay in Kauai with family on a budget, the Sheraton Kauai Resort is a moderately priced hotel on Kauai. You’ll find a guest laundromat, pool, fitness center, beach access, and massage treatments.

For kids ages 12 and under, they have a special dining plan at their restaurants. They also have an on-site luau.

Kuhio Shores condos are a great option for families. I stayed here 5 or 6 years ago and saw sea turtles from the lanai! They have 1 bedroom and 2 bedroom options, which is nice when traveling to Kauai with kids.

And, they have elevators, which makes it easy to carry up groceries.

Best Kauai Beaches

Kauai beaches are some of the most beautiful in Hawaii. My family has been to so many over the past 25 years, but these are the best Kauai beaches for families and some of my personal favorites.

It’s always a good idea to swim at Lifeguarded Beaches like Haena, Hanalei, Kealia, Lydgate, Poipu, Salt Pond, and Kekaha. You can always ask your hotel concierge or rental agent for safe swimming options nearby where you are staying.

Photo of kids playing at Poipu Beach on Kauai, one of the best Kauai beaches for kids and families #kauai #poipu #beach #hawaii #familytravel #visitkauai

One of my favorite kid-friendly beach on the North Shore is Hanalei Bay . They have a pier where kids can walk out and see fisherman and stand-up paddlers. It’s also a fun place for kids to play in the sand and water.

Anini Beach (and just down the road from Anini Beach) has some of the calmest, shallow waters, especially in the summer. You can usually see wind surfers and kite surfers here, which is neat for kids. And lots of chickens.

Kahili Beach has a river, which can be fun for younger kids to play in. It’s sometimes affected by flash floods, so make sure to check before you head there.

Kalapaki Beach is one of my favorites with little kids. It’s right in front of the Kauai Marriott Resort. The water is pretty calm, kids can usually see cruise ships and airplanes, plus you can grab lunch at Duke’s Barefoot Bar.

Fuji Beach is Kapaa’s “baby beach” and is located along Moanakai Rd and the bike path in Kapaa. Just be sure to keep an eye on your kids when they are near the water.

Lae Nani Beach on Papaloa Cove is pretty awesome for families. It’s really small, so it’s perfect if you are staying at a hotel or condo nearby.

SOUTH/WEST SHORE

Salt Ponds is one of my family’s favorite spots on the South Shore. It’s in Hanapepe and last time we were there, my kids saw a sea turtle sunbathing on the beach! The water is calm and perfect for little kids to try snorkeling.

Poipu has Baby Beach and Keiki Cove , both of which are great for little ones. These are small beaches and often you are only sharing with one other family. These are cute spots for family photos, too.

And they are close to a lot of Kauai South Shore hotels.

Best Kauai Snorkeling

If your kids are a bit older and you’re looking for the best Kauai snorkeling spots, you’re in luck! Kauai has some awesome snorkeling.

Typically, the North Shore is calmer in the summer, the South Shore is calmer in the winter, and the East Shore and West Shore are variable daily.

It’s always a good idea to check the Daily Surf Report before deciding where to go.

I’d personally recommend snorkeling at beaches that have a lifeguard on duty. However, there are snorkeling beaches at unlifeguarded locations, such as Beach House Beach, next to the Beach House Restaurant in Poipu on Lawai Road.

Snorkel rental shops also keep on top of the surf conditions and can make recommendations.

Snorkeling off boats is fun. They usually anchor at a safe spot and you don’t have to worry about finding a good place to snorkel on Kauai.

For families with kids ages 5 and older, this SeaFun Snorkel tour seems perfect for beginners and a great way to see turtles and tropical fish.

Read my full post about the best places to snorkel on Kauai !

Best Kauai Waterfalls

Since Kauai is home to the wettest spot on Earth (Mt. Waialeale) they also have lots of beautiful waterfalls. Some are easy to drive to and others take a bit more work.

There’s even a family-friendly Kauai Waterfalls Tour you can book that’s just 3 hours long. Here are some of my favorites to see with kids:

Photo of Wailua Falls, one of the best Kauai waterfalls and a top Kauai attraction #wailuafalls #wailua #kauai #waterfall #hawaii #familytravel

WAILUA FALLS

Do you remember the old TV show Fantasy Island ? The opening credits feature Wailua Falls on the East Shore. But, that’s not why you should add it to your Kauai itinerary.

Add it because it’s impressive to look at AND you can see it from the parking lot.

So, if your kids are napping in the car, you can pull into a parking spot and marvel at the falls.

OPAEKAA FALLS

This is another Kauai waterfall that’s easy to get to. You can follow the signs to the scenic lookout on the East Shore. From the lookout, you can see Opaekaa Falls and Kamokila Hawaiian Village.

SECRET FALLS

This is a really fun family adventure on Kauai. I did this when I was in middle school, but it’s totally doable for elementary aged kids. In order to see it, you need to paddle up the Wailua River.

There’s an official tour you can book for kids ages 5 and up that includes a kayak rental and lunch. Or, you can rent your own kayak or canoe and do it on your own.

The “hike” is basically a 45 minute walk.

HIDDEN VALLEY FALLS

This is another kid-friendly Kauai activity. Basically, you kayak down the Huleiwa River and hike .75 miles to see the waterfall.

With this tour , you get lunch and a motorized boat ride back. This sounds perfect for families with younger kids who might not have much energy to paddle back.

KALIHIWAI FALLS

If you are driving up North, you can see the impressive Kalihiwai Falls as you cross the bridge over the Kalihiwai River.

The tricky part is that there’s isn’t really a turnoff so you can get out and look at it. So, I’d suggest switching drivers if you can so you can get a good look.

HANAKAPIAI FALLS

If your kids are a bit older and are up for an adventure, Hanakapiai Falls is the ultimate hike on Kauai for families.

To get there, you literally drive to the end of the road on the North Shore. This hike is the first leg of the famous Na Pali Coast hike to Kalalau Valley.

What I think is cool about this hike is that you go through a bamboo forest. I remember doing this hike when I was 10-14 years old and I survived just fine. It’s probably good for kids ages 6 and older, due to the steep cliffs.

I don’t enjoy hiking, but this one is worth it.

Kauai Hikes, Walks + Strolls

Kauai is absolutely stunning and it’s best experienced by walking around and exploring.

If you don’t want to go back to your hotel for nap time, try putting them in a stroller or baby carrier while you go for a walk. It’s a great way to maximize your time on Kauai with avoiding overly tired kids!

Photo of a couple at the National Tropical Botanical Garden on Kauai, Hawaii, which is a top kid-friendly activity on Kauai for families #kauai #nationaltropicalbotanicalgarden #figtree #hawaii #garden

There’s walking at Na Aina Kai Botanical Gardens in Kilauea. It’s a sculpture park with an entrance fee. They even have a children’s garden that would be fun to explore with little ones.

A few years ago, Kauai opened their Multi-Use Path on the East Shore. It goes around Lydgate Park and across the Wailua Bridge , past Wailua Bay View and up Papaloa Road where it ends at the Coconut Marketplace .

But, then it starts back up at Waipouli Beach Resort where it goes all the way past Donkey Beach.

My mom’s favorite part of the Multi-Use Path is past Kealia Beach, because there are no cars and fewer people, just beautiful scenery.

This path is stroller friendly. There are lots of bike rentals in town, some with kid options, so that might be a fun idea. And some resorts, like the Hilton Garden Inn , have bikes for borrowing.

There are some marked paths near the Kauai Marriott Resort , that go around the lagoons. The paths are mostly paved, so strollers would be okay. Plus, you can end up at Kalapaki Beach to play and have lunch.

An easy trail on the East Shore is the Kuilau Ridge Trail . It’s a steady climb to the picnic shelter area. Sleeping Giant is a bit more strenuous, and is best for older kids.

There is the Heritage Trail in Poipu, which runs on either side of the Grand Hyatt . You can walk from Shipwreck Beach toward Mahaulepu. Or walk from Shipwreck Beach toward Poipu to enjoy the turtle views from up there.

There’s lots of walking options in Poipu, with a sidewalk along Lawai Road up until Kukuiula Harbor (which features a nice little beach!)

The Biodiversity Trail at National Tropical Botanical Gardens is interesting for adults and pretty and gentle paths for kids. You can explore on your own with a self-guided tour .

Other Kauai Top Attractions

Kauai really has so many things that draw visitors from all over the world. Too many to mention everything, so I’m highlighting some of the popular places families tend to go.

Keep scrolling to find out more things to do with kids in Kauai!

Photo of Waimea Canyon on Kauai, which is a top Kauai attraction and thing to do on Kauai #waimeacanyon #kauai #kauaiattraction #hawaii #hawaiiwithkids

WAIMEA CANYON

This is billed as Hawaii’s grand canyon and you’ve probably seen photos of Waimea Canyon anytime you read anything about Kauai. You can drive up to a lookout point and marvel at the view.

Be sure to check weather conditions before you go. I promise the view is underwhelming in foggy weather.

There are lots of hikes into the canyon, but I haven’t done them.

KOKEE STATE PARK

If you are driving up to Waimea Canyon, you might as well continue up to Kokee State Park. It can get quite chilly up there, so pack a sweatshirt if you tend to get cold easily.

They have a Kokee Natural History Museum that features Waimea Canyon and Kokee State Park (imagine that!) There are some interesting lookouts up here.

The road can get quite windy, so be warned in case you get car sick.

SPOUTING HORN

This is another free thing to do on Kauai . It’s located in Poipu and when the waves hit just right, you can see water shoot up in the air. It’s fun to watch for a bit.

Kids will probably ask to check out the souvenir stands nearby. It’s a fun stop on your way to the beach.

TUNNEL OF TREES

If you are heading to Poipu, you’ll drive through this Tunnel of Trees. It would be fun to experience with the top down in a jeep or convertible! But, it’s still cool in a regular car.

If you want to get a photo, make sure to pull off before you enter.

Hanapepe is known as “Kauai’s Biggest Little Town.”

Here’s where you’ll find a cool swinging bridge that kids love to cross. It used to be super rickety, but now it’s actually fairly sturdy.

Their little downtown area is filled with boutique shops. It’s also home to the Storybook Theatre of Hawaii that offers children’s programming.

My favorite thing to do in Hanapepe is hang out at Salt Pond Beach Park.

Hanalei is the epitome of a North Shore town. It has a similar vibe as Haleiwa on Oahu.

Besides the Hanalei Pier and Hanalei Bay, the biggest reason to come to Hanalei is to see the taro fields. It looks like a patchwork quilt and there are lookouts to see the fields from the highway.

There’s also a historic church that is green and gorgeous! It’s a nice town to walk around and visit the shops, galleries, and restaurants.

Kauai Kids Activities

If you’re wondering what to do on Kauai with kids, don’t fret! This island has a ton of cool family-friendly activities.

Again, there are too many to list so I pulled together the most popular Kauai activities for families:

Photo of a family kayaking on a river on Kauai to get to one of Kauai's best waterfalls #kauai #kayak #kauaiactivity #waterfall #hikingonkauai #kauaihike

KAUAI BOAT TOURS

One of my favorite things to do on Kauai is go on a boat. Kauai has such stunning scenery and seeing it from the water is amazing! My family likes to do the Captain Andy catamaran cruise . It’s for kids ages 3 and older, so no babies or toddlers .

If you’re interested in seeing whales, there’s this whale watching tour for kids ages 7 and older. I did this tour several years ago and it’s pretty cool. It’s 3 hours long and they give you snacks.

It’s a great way to see whales in Kauai, especially November-February.

And as I mentioned above, you can also rent a kayak to get to waterfalls like this one to Secret Falls or this one to Hidden Valley Falls .

But, the most family-friendly boat ride is the Fern Grotto one down the Wailua River. My oldest LOVES this one! There’s storytelling, singing and dancing on the river boat.

The whole experience is an hour and 20 minutes, which makes it doable with toddlers.

KAUAI HELICOPTER RIDE

So, I haven’t personally done a helicopter ride on Kauai, but I keep hearing good things about this Kauai helicopter tour . For one thing, babies are welcome and kids under 2 years old are free.

This tour is also 50 minutes long and features narration, so you know what you’re looking at. It’s definitely at the top of my Kauai bucket list!

ZIPLINING ON KAUAI

If you have adventure-seekers ages 7 and older, this Treehouse Zipline Course looks incredible! There are 7 different zipline adventures, one of which is Hawaii’s longest zipline at more than .75 miles long!

I’m not a thrill-seeker, so I haven’t been, but I’ve heard other families rave about it.

ALLERTON GARDEN

My mom loves going to Allerton Garden . National Geographic Traveler just named it one of the top “50 Places of a Lifetime.” They have a guided walking tour where you can see those crazy trees featured in Jurassic Park and Pirates of the Caribbean .

Plus, it’s a gorgeous place to walk around and take photos. It’s not stroller-friendly, so you may need to bring a baby carrier.

KAUAI TUBING

Another popular Kauai activity for kids is going mountain tubing . It’s for kids ages 5 and older, so we just tried it with our oldest and he LOVED it!

Basically, you float on an inner tube down a river through tunnels and scenic landscapes.

Oh, and you wear a headlamp so you can see where you are going.

Photo of Kauai mountain tubing, a kid-friendly activity on Kauai for families looking for adventure #kauai #tubing #adventure #familytravel #hawaii #hawaiiwithkids #visitkauai

KAUAI FARMERS MARKETS

Another fun thing to do on Kauai with kids is explore their farmers markets. We like to stop by on our first morning.

With the time difference from Seattle, our family is up bright and early that first day. So, we can load up on local fruits and veggies to enjoy throughout our trip.

Plus, oftentimes you can get baked goodies there!

CAVES ON KAUAI

Kauai is also home to several caves. And they are some of the coolest caves for kids to explore. I remember visiting Maniniholo Dry Cave (across from Haena State Park up North) when I was a kid. Make sure to bring flashlights for your kids!

And if you are looking for a wet cave, Waikanaloa Cave and Waikapale cave are just up the road a bit. Neither are safe for swimming, so keep an eye on kids.

And on the South Shore, families should check out Makauwahi Cave. I remember thinking it was kind of scary when I was a teen, but I think that’s because you have to crawl on your hands and knees through a triangular opening to get inside.

It’s like a prehistoric experience once you are inside.

When we first went, it was practically impossible to find. But now, it’s pretty easy and there’s even an education table there.

Best Kauai Luau

I’ve been a professional hula dancer for the past 20 years. Hawaiian culture is just so rich and amazing and it would be a shame to fly all the way to Hawaii and not see any hula dancing.

So, I have to talk about your Kauai luau options so you can pick the best Kauai luau for your family:

Photo of Luau Kalamaku, on of the best Kauai luau for kids and families located at Kilohana Plantation in Lihue, Kauai, Hawaii #kilohana #kilohanaplantation #luau #luaukalamaku #hawaii #familytravel

SMITH FAMILY LUAU

This is the luau I grew up going to. They have an incredible garden that kids love to run around before the show.

What’s extra cool is that you can just pay to explore the 30 acre botanical and cultural garden, if you aren’t interested in the full luau experience.

And if you already have dinner plans, you can reserve tickets just for their show. And their show is fantastic!

Not only does it feature Hawaiian hula dancing, but they also feature dancing from Tahiti, Samoa, New Zealand, China, Japan and the Philippines. And the food is really good!

Click here to book discount Smith Family Luau tickets !

LUAU KALAMAKU

Last year, I took my kids to Luau Kalamaku and they LOVED it!

You can ride the Kilohana Plantation Railway train before the luau, which is a total hit with the kids!

I was impressed with the food and even went back for another helping (which is SO unlike me.) They do some traditional hula dancing during dinner.

But, the actual show is more like a theatrical presentation. It reminded me a lot of Moana since it was about voyaging to Hawaii. My kids were 3.5 years old and 9 months old and they BOTH were mesmerized until the very end.

I like that it ends earlier than other luau.

Click here for discount Luau Kalamaku tickets !

GRAND HYATT KAUAI LUAU

This is a popular luau for those staying at the Grand Hyatt Kauai since it’s on-site. They feature hands-on crafts and activities (including hula lessons) for the whole family.

They have an inside option for rainy weather, but I’ve heard it can be tough to see the performance when it’s indoors.

This is Kauai’s only oceanfront luau experience. We’ve done an oceanfront luau on Maui and it is kind of cool to be able to walk the beach at sunset and hear the ocean waves during dinner.

This one is in Poipu, which is perfect for those staying on the South Shore. The show sounds pretty cool, as they feature the migration to Kauai, famous Kauai songs, fire throwers, 1950s style “Hollywood hula,” and dancing from Tahiti and New Zealand.

HAWAII ALIVE LUAU SHOW

This is the luau at Kauai Marriott Resort. It’s one of the longest running luau shows in Hawaii.

What’s cool about the Hawaii Alive Luau Show is that you can just purchase tickets to the show, without dinner. So, if luau food isn’t your thing, you can go to a restaurant and then just go to the luau show.

But, the food sounds really good and includes carving stations and Hawaiian-inspired cuisine. Oh, and they offer free valet parking.

LUAU MAKAIWA

This luau is at the Courtyard Kauai at Coconut Beach . I went here as a kid when it was called something else, but it’s been revamped since then. They do a torchlight ceremony before the festivities start.

Their menu is extensive and offers gluten-free, dairy-free, peanut-free, and shellfish-free options.

MAILANI DINNER SHOW

If you are up at the North Shore, the Mailani Dinner Show is right at the St. Regis Princeville.

They don’t offer this year-round, so you’ll need to check with the hotel to see if it’s happening during your stay.

This show takes place in front of Hanalei Bay and features chanting, dancing, and storytelling. Kids ages 5 and under are free.

Best Places to Eat on Kauai

Kauai is quickly becoming a foodie paradise. These past few years, their food truck scene has exploded! And so has their shave ice options.

Photo of Kauai food trucks, which is a kid-friendly dining option on Kauai for families #kauai #foodtruck #hawaii #hawaiianfood #kauaifood

One of my favorite places to send people is Tahiti Nui in Hanalei. It’s the dive bar featured in The Descendants , but the food is outstanding!

Plus, this is where you can see amazing hula dancing and listen to professional musicians at night.

My family has been eating at Kilauea Bakery & Pau Hana Pizza for years and years. We like to pick up our goodies to go and then find a pretty spot to eat.

My favorite Hawaiian restaurant of all time is Mark’s Place . It’s one of those secret spots in an industrial area that you wouldn’t know was there. Their food is AH-MAZ-ING.

They have picnic tables where you can eat, but I like to pick up to go. In fact, my mom often picks up food to bring to the airport when we arrive so we can eat it at a beach.

My personal favorite menu item is their beef stew, but their menu changes frequently. They specialize in upscale plate lunch.

So, I’ve only eaten at Coconut’s Fish Cafe on Maui, but it was so outstanding that I literally texted everyone I knew when I heard they were opening a location in Kapaa.

You HAVE to order their fish tacos. They are mind-blowingly tasty and may ruin all other fish tacos for you.

On my last trip, I devoured a plate of chicken and waffles at NOM Kauai . They were a food truck last year, but have since set up a brick and mortar restaurant in Kapaa. Their food is locally sourced and has a Southern twist.

For a nice lunch or dinner or Sunday Brunch, Gaylord’s at Kilohana has a grassy area right off the dining patio where kids can walk around and explore. Then, you can hop aboard the Kilohana Plantation Railway Train!

For a casual breakfast, lunch or dinner out, Lava Lava Beach Club has a grassy area with Corn Hole, Giant Jenga and other games. Plus ,the beach is right there.

And we can’t forget shave ice! Wailua Shave Ice is here and they feature all fresh fruit. Their shave ice is so popular that they opened up a location in Portland, OR. I went down there for “research” and it’s sooooo tasty!

I love love love Shrimp Station in Waimea. They also have a location in Kapaa, but I like the roadside feel of their original Waimea location best. They make the tastiest coconut shrimp I’ve ever had!

Now, this isn’t a restaurant, but you have to swing by the Kauai Kookie factory store. Here’s where you’ll find new cookie flavors and products not available anywhere else. I’m hooked on their Cinnamon Toast.

They also have a restaurant in Kalaheo, but I haven’t tried it yet.

Speaking of Kalaheo, my favorite breakfast spot is the Kalaheo Cafe & Coffee Company . They have an array of baked items that you can grab on your way to the beach. But, I like to sit and do a full breakfast to energize me for the day. So many tasty options!

And you absolutely have to swing by Warehouse 3540 in Lawai. This is where you can find Kickshaw’s (home of my favorite burger) and The Fresh Shave . They have indoor and outdoor seating.

Plus, you can shop at cool boutiques while your food is being cooked.

Which hawaiian island is the best to visit our 2024 ranking.

Though it can be easy to assume the six most visited Hawaiian Islands offer similar experiences, they are more diverse than you can imagine. From Waimea Canyon to Waikiki Beach, Hawaii’s wealth of natural beauty (think: cerulean waters, verdant vegetation and stunning white sand beaches ) is just waiting to be explored. To help you decide which Hawaiian Island is ideal for your next vacation, U.S. News took into account sights, expert opinion and reader input to determine the best Hawaiian Islands to visit. Vote for your favorite island below to have a say in next year's list.

Kaua'i

Hawaii - the big island, honolulu - oahu.

hawaii tourist family

Though it's perhaps most famous for the fabulous coastlines of Ka'anapali Beach and Wailea Beach, Maui is a great option for both couples and families looking for variety in their vacation. Away from the sand, you can drive the Road to Hana, enjoy a bird's-eye view during a helicopter tour , see one of the world's largest dormant volcanoes at Haleakala National Park and get up close to marine wildlife while snorkeling in Honolua Bay or around Molokini. Then, for an experience you won’t forget, relax on the volcanic coastline of Wai'anapanapa State Park, where jet-black sands meet vibrant sapphire waters.

hawaii tourist family

With a more easygoing environment than other islands like Oahu and the Big Island, the Garden Isle lets its wild, natural beauty speak for itself and is perfect for an adventurous getaway. The main attractions here are Koke'e State Park and Waimea Canyon, otherwise known as the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific." But you also won’t want to miss Kaua'i’s breathtaking Wailua Falls or dreamy Po'ipu Beach. And if a challenging hike is what you’re after, it doesn’t get more scenic than the Kalalau Trail along the rugged Napali Coast. Just remember to pack galoshes and a rain jacket – Kaua'i is one of Hawaii's rainiest islands.

hawaii tourist family

The island of Hawaii's bevy of one-of-a-kind attractions and family-friendly activities makes it ideal for travelers who prefer a jam-packed itinerary. Not only does the Big Island offer white and black sand beaches , including the famous Punalu’u Black Sand Beach, it is also home to lush rainforests and two active volcanoes at Hawai'i Volcanoes National Park. History buffs will love visiting Pu'ukohola Heiau National Historic Site (home to one of Hawaii's largest restored temples) and Kealakekua Bay (where British explorer James Cook first arrived in 1779). Or, head to Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park to see petroglyphs, ancient Hawaiian fishponds and green sea turtles.

hawaii tourist family

The least-developed island on this list, Moloka'i was made for those who don’t mind going off the beaten path. With lush rainforests, miles of beautiful beaches and some of the tallest sea cliffs in the world, Moloka'i is a great place to reconnect with nature, whether you’re staying overnight at one of Moloka'i’s quiet oceanfront cottages – there is only one hotel on the island – or visiting on a day trip from one of the other Hawaiian Islands. Top activities here include soaking up some sun on secluded Papohaku Beach, snorkeling Moloka'i's 28-mile reef or joining a guided cultural hike through Halawa Valley.

hawaii tourist family

Dubbed The Gathering Place, Oahu is home to plenty of famous sites and a great jumping-off point for first-time visitors to the Hawaiian Islands. On the South Shore, you'll find Waikiki Beach, Hanauma Bay, Pearl Harbor National Memorial and Le'ahi (Diamond Head) State Monument, all in or near the capital city of Honolulu. Meanwhile, the North Shore is home to a more laid-back vibe, as well as the renowned waves at Waimea Bay and Sunset Beach, which host major surfing competitions every year. After exploring along the coast, head inland to the tranquil Byodo-In Temple, a replica of a Buddhist temple in Uji, Japan.

hawaii tourist family

For a secluded, nature-centric escape, set your sights on Lana'i. Centrally located between Maui and Moloka'i, this remote hideaway makes a great home base for inter-island travel. Travelers can take a four-wheel-drive vehicle to spots like Kaiolohia (Shipwreck Beach) and Kaunolu Village, a prehistoric fishing village that was once frequented by King Kamehameha I, or spend their days sunbathing on Polihua Beach. In winter, head to Hulopo'e Bay for terrific whale-watching opportunities. Then, make your way to Keahiakawelo (Garden of the Gods), an enchanting rock garden that was once part of a native dryland forest, for a breathtaking Lana'i sunset.

15 Best Family Hotels in Hawaii, Vetted By Experts

Posted: August 28, 2023 | Last updated: August 28, 2023

Hawaii is everything most families want in a vacation and then some — swaying palm trees, exciting hula performances, scenic beaches and so many rainbows. Kids get to experience Hawaiian culture, explore volcanoes (safely with a tour group, please!) and romp in the ocean. Weary parents are greeted with leis, drinks and smiles. It's basically vacation gold.

Where should you stay in paradise? We sought recommendations from travel experts who are parents themselves and collectively have been to Hawaii dozens of times. We found top picks on Oahu, Maui, the island of f Hawaiʻi (you might know it as The Big Island) and Kauai. To round out this guide of tried-and-true places adored by parents of toddlers to teens, we added recommendations from editors who recently visited the Aloha state for the Good Housekeeping Family Travel Awards.

To help narrow down all the incredible options, think about what you need and want in a resort. For instance, would you prefer to stay somewhere with a kitchen or are you happy eating all your meals out? Do you want to feel like you're in the middle of nowhere or be within walking distance of shops and restaurants? Is an on-site supervised kids' club important to you, or do you plan on spending the whole vacay together as a family? From a spectacular beach resort where The Hunger Games was filmed to a new wellness-minded retreat for the whole fam, you're sure to land on a spot that will be your slice of paradise.

Editor's Note: Because of the recent wildfires, traveling to West Maui is strongly discouraged at this time.

We found top picks on Oahu, Maui, the island of Hawaiʻi (you might know it as The Big Island) and Kauai.

Hawaii family, including three children, die in apparent murder-suicide

Police say preliminary investigation shows husband fatally stabbed wife and children in state’s worst mass killing since 1999

Hawaii police said on Sunday they were investigating what appears to be the murder-suicide of a family, including three children, by its patriarch at a Honolulu home.

Despite police’s description of the incident as a murder-suicide, such crimes since the 1980s have been known as family annihilations. Communities – especially in the US – often perceive those crimes to be isolated tragedies.

However, an Indianapolis Star investigation found there had been an average of one family annihilation somewhere in the country every five days since 2020.

Police investigating Sunday’s case first arrived at the home in the Honolulu neighborhood of Manoa at 8.30am but left after no one answered the door, Lt Deena Thoemmes said at a news conference. She explained police were responding to an anonymous person’s call and had no cause to enter the home.

Officers returned at 9.15am after receiving another call and entered after speaking with a caller. They found four people who had been fatally stabbed.

The dead were a wife and three children aged 10, 12 and 17. The husband also was found dead.

A preliminary investigation showed the husband fatally stabbed his wife and children, Thoemmes said. She added the husband’s cause of death was under investigation.

The ages of the adults was not immediately known, and the names of the dead had not been publicly released as of early Monday.

There was no history of domestic calls to the residence, and police did not have a motive for the killings, Thoemmes said.

Witnesses reported there had been an argument in the home early on Sunday morning, police said.

The five deaths mark the state’s worst mass killings since the Xerox murders on 2 November 1999, when Byran Koji Uyesugi fatally shot seven co-workers, including his supervisor, the local police chief Joe Logan said.

Logan predicted Sunday’s scene would affect officers, “as it would any officer, for the rest of their lives”.

In 94% of such cases, family annihilators are male, and they often die by suicide, according to the Star’s investigation.

Sunday’s case was unusual in the fact that guns are used in 86% of family annihilations. But with no centralized database for family annihilations available, the crimes’ characteristics and prevalence are not generally well known at the academic level.

Hawaii is always on the short list of dream destinations for a relaxing beach vacation. But a potential trip to paradise doesn’t happen without first asking the critical question: How much is a vacation to Hawaii?

The answer can vary depending on where you stay and when you travel. What does that mean? Well, we have crunched the numbers to give you a better idea of how much you can expect to spend and get you better prepared for your next Hawaiian vacation. Let’s take a look.

Estimated Hawaii trip cost

(Photo courtesy of Hilton Hawaiian Village)

We looked closely at the estimated costs of a 10-night trip for a family of four (2 adults and 2 children) during the peak summer travel season and a seven-night trip for that same family during the shoulder season.

Here are the hypotheticals supporting these dollar figures:

Travel to Honolulu on the island of Oahu, the most popular island for visitors to Hawaii.

Round-trip flights for four from Los Angeles.

A peak trip assumes a June 25, 2023, departure. A shoulder-season trip assumes a May 8, 2023, departure.

We used three different property types to assess price estimates. They are:

The beachfront four-star resort: Hilton Hawaiian Village.

The three-star hotel: Holiday Inn Express Waikiki.

A condo: Various Waikiki units on Vrbo.com.

Totals include resort fees. Those are:

$50 per night at the four-star resort.

$25 per night at the three-star hotel.

All management and cleaning fees at the condo units.

Totals include parking costs of:

$65 per day at the four-star resort.

$45 per day at the three-star hotel.

Parking is not included in condo totals (varies by building/unit).

Meals include nightly dinners of about $225, with drinks, taxes and tips.

At a four-star resort, meal estimates include breakfasts and lunches totaling about $100 per day.

Costs at a three-star hotel, which includes free breakfast, include only lunches totaling about $50 per day.

Tightly budgeted meals assume cutting meal costs by 60% with cheap eats and/or preparing meals.

Activities for the 10-night trip include a snorkeling excursion, surfing lessons, a Pearl Harbor visit and a day at a water park. For the seven-night trip: snorkeling, the Pearl Harbor visit and a day at a water park.

With the information outlined above, here are our estimated budgets.

10-night trip, peak summer travel season

$12,296: Four-star beachfront resort, with a 10-day rental car.

$9,286: Three-star hotel, with a 10-minute walk to the beach and a five-day rental car.

$6,261 Low-cost condo with walking distance to the beach, tightly budgeted meals and a five-day rental car.

Seven-night trip, shoulder season

$7,602: Four-star beachfront resort, with a seven-day rental car.

$5,792: Three-star hotel, with a 10-minute walk to beach, and a rental car for two days.

$3,892: Low-cost condo with walking distance to the beach, tightly budgeted meals and a two-day rental car.

Can you beat these numbers? Definitely. Here are tips on how to save on your vacation to Hawaii.

How to cut your Hawaii vacation costs

Stay on the beach or rent a car every day, but don’t do both.

Does your idea of a great vacation involve hitting the open road to explore every corner of the island? Then don’t pay premium Hawaii prices for a hotel on the beach. On the other hand, if your dream trip involves tons of time lounging on the sand and splashing in the pool, don’t pay $75 a day for a rental car plus $65 a day to park when it’s just going to sit there.

Waikiki is home to about 85 hotels — all within walking distance of a car rental agency.

So it’s easy to get a car for part of your trip. Select “Waikiki” instead of “Honolulu airport” as your pick-up and drop-off location for your rental car. If you pick the car up in the morning and then drop it off at the end of the day, you can save a night’s worth of parking costs, cutting down your trip cost.

The downside to this strategy is you may have to wait in a long line to get your car. So send one adult to pick up the vehicle in the morning while the rest of the crew gets ready for the day. And don’t forget to include airport transfers in your budget. Budget about $50 each way, including tip, for a taxi or rideshare between Waikiki and Honolulu airport.

Eat cheaper

If your family of four has a nice dinner at the world-famous Duke’s Waikiki, including cocktails for the adults, an appetizer and a Hula Pie dessert to share, you’ll spend about $225, including taxes and tip. Of course, the beachfront views, tiki torches and aloha spirit are worth it. But you don’t have to spend that much every night.

Step away from the beach and meals get much cheaper. For example, the outstanding burgers at Cheeseburger Waikiki are about $18, as opposed to the $36 fish at Duke’s. In addition, pizza joints, super-affordable ramen houses, authentic Hawaiian diners such as Rainbow Drive-In , chains such as Denny’s and IHOP, and fast-food restaurants including McDonald’s, Burger King and Subway can bring your meal costs way down.

Or, swing into one of the many ABC Stores to pick up packaged salads, sandwiches, yogurt, snacks, drinks or some spam musubi (a slice of grilled Spam sandwiched between or on top of a block of rice, wrapped in nori) to fill up on the cheap. More affordable yet, you can buy cereal, coffee, milk, sandwich meats and bread to prepare breakfasts and lunches at your hotel or condo.

Consider a condo

It’s not hard to find a vacation rental just a few minutes from the beach for much cheaper than you’d pay for a hotel.

hawaii tourist family

For example, we found a condo on VRBO for 10 nights for $1,618 plus tax, for a total of $1,887. And that’s during peak summer travel.

hawaii tourist family

For a seven-day rental during the shoulder season, you can cut your total accommodations cost down to about $1,000.

Many condos have kitchens, too, so you could save a ton by making eggs or pancakes for breakfast, spaghetti for dinner and even packing sandwiches for lunches while you’re out and about.

Pay with points and miles

The question “How much is a trip to Hawaii” has a much more appealing answer if you pay using airline miles, hotel points or credit card points — which can erase hundreds or even thousands of dollars from your trip cost. If you want to go to Hawaii …

So, how much does it cost to go to Hawaii? It can be very expensive. Hidden costs like resort fees and exorbitant parking prices can easily break the budget. But there are ways to save on the cost of a vacation to Hawaii. Traveling before or after the peak summer season can save considerably. In addition, don’t pay a premium to stay on the beach if you won’t take full advantage of that location. But don’t pay up to $65 a night to park a car because you’re splashing around the pool for several days.

To save big, consider a condo where you can cook meals to save on dining. With these simple strategies, your answer to the question “How much is a vacation to Hawaii?” is one that fits your budget.

Oahu on a budget: 5 things to do for free, adding value to your hawaiian vacation, natural hawaii, more about hawaii.

Discover the differences between these majestic islands and choose your paradise.

Hawaii Island is the largest of the islands and sits at the southernmost part of the chain. A temperamental youngest sibling of the family, this island is full of drama, adventure, and natural beauty. Explore Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, tour a local coffee plantation, stroll seaside villages, travel back in time at Puukoholo Heiau National Historic Site, and stand at the southernmost point of the United States where nothing but ocean separates you from Antarctica.

Kauai is the oldest of the islands and keeps watch over the others from the northernmost point of the chain. With age comes beauty and the dramatic landscape of Kauai reflects this sentiment. Hike Waimea Canyon and gaze at the Grand Canyon of the Pacific, trek the Koloa Heritage Trail for a glimpse of the past, visit local botanical gardens for their tropical treasures, tour cascading waterfalls, and helicopter out to the Na Pali coastline for the ultimate vantage point.

Maui is the second-largest island and just to the north of Hawaii Island. Known for famous beaches and championship golf courses, Maui delivers an experience filled with magic and beauty to visitors. Witness an awe-inspiring sunrise at Haleakala, snorkel with sea turtles at Molokini, stroll the eclectic shops in Lahaina and witness a ceremonial cliff dive at Black Rock.

Sandwiched between Kauai and Maui is the bustling island of Oahu. The most populated in the chain, Oahu offers a unique blend of modern and ancient influences. Transforming the southern coastline is the city of Honolulu while monster waves rule the northern coast. Reflect on U.S. history at Pearl Harbor, stroll through the pineapple maze at the Dole Plantation, hike the Diamond Head crater for unobstructed views of Waikiki Beach, visit the new International Market Place, and watch big wave surfers tackle the Banzai Pipeline.

There is indeed an island for every personality. Find your Hawaii, find your paradise.

 • To make it easier to replace your passport if it’s lost or stolen, in addition to your passport, take a photocopy of your passport information page (keeping it separate from your actual passport).
 • Carry only a limited amount of cash, just enough for gratuities and incidental purchases. Major credit cards are widely accepted and can be replaced if lost or stolen.
 • Always lock your hotel room door (including patio and balcony door on any level of the building) and use the peephole before opening the door.
 • Store your valuables (such as cash, credit cards and airline tickets) in the hotel’s in-room safe or front desk safety deposit box.
 • If you must carry valuables on your person, do so in a pouch or money belt concealed under your clothing. Purses and backpacks can be easy targets for thieves.

Mexico and the Caribbean

Spend your days rolling in the waves, relaxing by the pool or enjoying quiet time (thanks to some superior kids' clubs) at these island resorts.

Nickelodeon Hotels & Resorts Riviera Maya, Mexico

nickelodeon hotels resorts riviera maya, mexico

With massive waterparks, daily slimings and Nickelodeon characters galore, the kids have it made at the all-inclusive Nickelodeon Hotels & Resort Riviera Maya, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award Winner. But grown-ups aren’t left out of the fun. Tequila tastings, spa treatments and romantic dinners can be on your agenda thanks to the supervised club for kids ages 4 to 12. And while you probably wouldn’t be booking a SpongeBob-themed room if you didn’t have the kids in tow, the decor is as mod and classy as it can be. All the accommodations are suites that sleep up to five and have two bathrooms. Suites have direct access to a pool from the balcony. (Yes, even on the top floor!)

Atlantis, Paradise Island, Bahamas

view of atlantis hotel in the bahamas, good housekeeping's pick for best family vacation destinations

Winner of a 2024 Family Travel Award, Atlantis is a top choice for families of all ages looking for a mix of relaxation and adventure. Its adrenaline-pumping waterpark features high-speed slides, including a one-of-a-kind tube slide down a Mayan pyramid. Animal encounters, like getting up close to a dolphin, are thrilling in a different way. But on the other side of the massive resort, the beaches are super chill. The gentle water is just perfect for toddlers and preschoolers. Supervised clubs for kids, tweens and teens truly wow, so adults can enjoy the casino and a meal at one of the resort's fine-dining restaurants.

Club Med Michès Playa Esmeralda, Dominican Republic

Movies under the stars, trapeze lessons, windsurfing — with cool activities like these, kids will never want to leave this newish resort in the lush, away-from-it-all part of the island. Supervised clubs for babies through teens keep the good times rolling while you’re at the adults-only Zen pool or doing treetop yoga. (Yes, that’s a thing.) Solar panels, recycling, plastic-free water bottles and other sustainable initiatives are part of the eco-minded resort culture.

Beaches Negril Resort & Spa, Negril, Jamaica

a sparsely attended white sand beach at beaches negril, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

While this all-inclusive resort and 2024 Family Travel Award-winner caters to all ages, toddlers and preschoolers will be star-struck. Sesame Street characters entertain them with story times, dance parties and even puppet-making! That’s on top of the mini water slides, splash areas and a playground that makes little ones squeal with glee and wears them out, so they’ll hit the sack early.

Private childcare and supervised kids’ clubs (for babies through teens, including those with special needs) are an option when you want a spa treatment, a quiet dinner or just to read a book on the resort's idyllic 7-Mile Beach. All the rooms and suites got a glow-up in 2020, plus there are new villas with butler service (sign us up!)

Fairmont Mayakoba, Playa del Carmen, Mexico

When it comes to baby and kid gear, this luxury resort has you covered. Need a bottle warmer? They got it. How about a step stool for a toddler to reach the sink? Yours for the asking. With these worries aside, you can concentrate on the beauty of the surroundings (the resort is surrounded by a lush mangrove forest) and incredible bucket-list activities, like kids’ carnivals and night kayaking. All the rooms have received a glow-up and there's a sleek new beach club to boot.

Rock House Resort, Turks & Caicos

the infinity pool at the rock house resort, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Your family may never leave the water at this Mediterranean-inspired oasis , which opened in May 2022. In addition to a full kitchen and roomy living room, many of the villa-style accommodations feature a spacious private pool. (Yes way!) And if your crew ever tires of it, fun awaits at the resort’s oceanfront infinity pool and stretch of white sand beach, which is exclusively for resort guests. Just note that while a cliffside setting makes the resort incredibly picturesque, it’s impossible to navigate with a stroller — so bring the tweens, teens and even grandparents if they don’t have trouble climbing stairs.

Embassy Suites by Hilton Aruba Resort

embassy suites by hilton aruba resort

A brand that's popular with families because it offers separate sleeping spaces for kids and adults, Embassy Suites recently opened a location in Aruba. (Pinch us now.) The 330-suite hotel boasts a kids' pool and playground and is just steps away from the iconic Eagle Beach. A breakfast buffet (with made-to-order items) is included in the price, which is already a value. Rooms also feature a kitchenette, so you can stash drinks and snacks and save your budget for the island's many incredible water activities.

New England Cozy

a slide that says new england cozy with a whale tail

Lakes, lighthouses and hiking trails make New England a great place to visit in almost any season.

Quisisana Resort, Lovell, ME

two friends frolic in a lake at the quisisana resort, a good housekeeping pick for family vacation destinations

Kids will get a digital detox at this all-inclusive lakefront resort , but they’ll be too busy playing to miss their devices. Without TV or a Wi-Fi signal in the comfortable, air-conditioned rooms and cabins, they’ll be fully immersed in the slew of included activities — from paddle boating to tennis to sandcastle-building. They might even learn to kayak or catch their first fish.

At night, music fills the resort. Broadway-style shows, held in a new outdoor theater, entertain all generations. There’s something about the fresh air and a choice of lollipops that keeps most kids from getting too wiggly, and the caliber of the performances is at least on par with good community theater.

The three included daily meals — with menu items like lobster rolls and Maine blueberry pie — will leave your crew’s bellies happy and full. And if you do need Wi-Fi occasionally, you can pop in the main lobby for a signal. Shh: The kids will be fine without it.

Hidden Pond, Kennebunkport, ME

campfire at hidden pond in maine, good housekeeping's pick for best family vacation destinations

Open from May to October, this nature-focused retreat provides a refuge from city life. Yoga sessions in the garden, a shed filled with arts and crafts supplies for kids, guided nature walks and outdoor art classes are easy-going yet exciting at the same time. Cottages with fireplaces foster togetherness, and complimentary breakfast arrives at your door every morning so there's no need to rush out for coffee.

Smugglers' Notch Resort, Jeffersonville, VT

a family goes biking through green hills at smuggler's notch, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Nestled in the Green Mountains, this resort is just as fun in the summer months as it is during prime ski season. Besides eight heated pools (some with waterslides!), the action-packed lineup of family activities has plenty to do whether you’re traveling with a toddler, teen or both. Sing-a-longs, magic shows and scavenger hunts keep little ones entertained while older kids will welcome the chance to take a guided hike, design and launch a water rocket or play glow-in-the-dark volleyball. A GH 2024 Family Travel Awards winner, condos at this property accommodate up to five bedrooms, making it possible for extended family and friends to stay together.

Ocean Edge Resort and Golf Club, Brewster, MA

the boardwalk to the beach bar at the ocean's edge resort golf club, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Beach, pool, eat, repeat — that’s how your crew will spend laid-back days at this Cape Cod gem . The private beach has gentle surf and at low tide, kids can spy little sea creatures in the tide pools. When the tide changes, head to the heated outdoor or indoor pools. Outdoor movies are the perfect wind-down to bedtime. And if you can pry the kids out of the water, activities like scavenger hunts, curated by the resort’s new director of fun (for real!) await. Just make sure to stay in the “mansion” section of the resort because that’s the part with private beach access.

Sebasco Harbor Resort, Phippsburg, ME

the kids' club at the sebasco harbor resort, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

Kids will never forget sleeping in a lighthouse next to the ocean. The resort’s 1945 lighthouse contains recently renovated guest rooms with amazing views, sea breezes and conveniences like a fridge and microwave. The lighthouse rooms are also near the resort’s iconic oceanfront saltwater pool, which recently got a makeover. A vintage bowling alley, weekly pirate cruise and old-school kids’ club add to the New England charm.

Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge, Stowe, VT

bluebird cady hill lodge

A fantastic value, this new '70s-inspired cozy lodge is perfect for families who want to explore Vermont's Green Mountains. The scenic trails of Cady Hill Forest are just steps away and downtown Stowe is about a 10-minute walk. Two- and three-bedroom cottages at Bluebird Cady Hill Lodge have plenty of space for families and a kitchen to boot. A game room, fire pits for s'mores roasting and a pool make hanging at the lodge a nice respite in between nature activities.

California Dreamin'

a slide that says california dreamin' with a picture of a palm tree

Choose your Cali adventure: You can find bustling cityscapes, tranquil trails, stunning beaches and even a fairytale castle.

Los Angeles, CA

morning scenery of griffith observatory and downtown la los angeles is good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

Tweens and teens won’t roll their eyes if you suggest a vacay in L.A. — where, trust us, they’ll ask you to eat at In-N-Out-Burger (look cool and say you already had it on the list). Some more must-dos: Visit the Griffith Observatory for the out-of-this-world exhibits and a stellar view of the Hollywood sign, and if you're an outdoorsy family you can hike down from the observatory to the Hollywood Walk of Fame and famous TCL Chinese Theaters .

The Academy Museum of Motion Pictures , where anyone 17 and under gets in free, is conveniently located near the classic La Brea Tar Pits and the cool LACMA ( Los Angeles County Museum of Art). Some outdoor shopping at The Grove L.A. and a beach day in Santa Monica with a spin on the iconic wheel at the Santa Monica Pier will get you more well-deserved parent cred. Or, you can take a trip to Universal Studios Hollywood , where, for now, you can find the only Super Nintendo World open in the United States. Stay at The Garland in North Hollywood, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Awards winner. It has a swanky trolley that transports guests to and from Universal, as well as other kid perks like dive-in movies and a retro-chic family suite with bunk beds.

San Diego, CA

an overhead shot of the loews coronado bay over the water in san diego, a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

Can’t decide between heading to the beach or exploring a big city? San Diego has the best of both worlds, with near-perfect weather to boot. Make your home base a beach resort like the Kona Kai San Diego Resort & Spa , San Diego Mission Bay Resort or, if you're bringing a big group, Shore House at Del, a Good Housekeeping 2024 Family Travel Award winner. Intersperse oceanside fun with short drives to the city’s famous zoo and museums in Balboa Park. Plan to spend at least a half day at Liberty Station , a cultural attraction that has many places to eat and shop. New stores and restaurants are open at Seaport Village , which has a classic carousel for kids to ride.

Monterey, CA

guests wearing face coverings and enjoying the kelp forest exhibit at the monterey bay aquarium monterey is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destination

The number one reason to book a vacation in this coastal town: the aquarium. Yes, the Monterey Bay Aquarium is that good. It levels up the typical touch tank experience by letting little kids crawl through tunnels surrounded by tropical fish displays and use squirt toys to learn how animals stand up to big waves. There’s even a padded zone with eye-level exhibits for toddlers! And the whole family will be wowed by the aquarium’s newish exhibition, "Into the Deep: Exploring Our Undiscovered Ocean." Some of the creatures in the 21 live exhibit areas are newly discovered and haven’t even been named yet. Mind blown! Stay at the hotel next door, InterContinental The Clement Monterey .

Disneyland Resort and California Adventure, Anaheim, CA

the ferris wheel at disneyland california adventure disneyland is a good housekeeping pick for best family vacation destinations

If you're looking for a Disney trip with young kids, Disneyland may have the edge over an Orlando vacay. Here are some reasons why: You can get on more rides without as much walking in California, so that means fewer tired and cranky kids. Summer weather is also usually better in Anaheim than in hot-and-humid Florida. And rides like Radiator Springs Racers, which looks like it’s right out of the movie Cars , are Cali-exclusive. The new Villas at Disneyland Hotel offer options that sleep up to 12 guests plus the decor is whimsical.
