Chennai Government Museum Timings

The Government Museum Chennai, or Madras Museum, is among the oldest museums in the world, and the second oldest in India. It has a rich collection of artefacts detailing human history and culture.

The museum is known for artefacts and bronze sculptures belonging to different South Indian dynasties. But the exhibits also include items from archaeology, geology, numismatics and other varied subjects. Government Museum Chennai even has the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe.

The entire collection of the museum is spread across six buildings and 40+ galleries. Besides the impressive museum galleries, you can also visit the National Art Gallery and a children’s museum in the Government Museum complex.

A spacious Museum Theatre, which hosts a variety of cultural shows and plays, is part of the complex too.

History of Government Museum Chennai

The initial proposal for the Government Museum in Chennai was put forward by the Madras Literary Society about 200 years ago, in 1846. And in 1851, the Madras Government Museum (then, Central Museum), was opened in the college of Fort St. George. Madras Literary Society contributed 1100 geological specimens.

Later, in 1854, the growing collection was shifted to the current location, Pantheon, as the college building was in a dilapidated condition.

The Connemara Public Library was opened in 1896, along with the Front Building and The Museum Theatre. The main entrance building was built in 1939. And in 1951, the National Art Gallery was opened. The building for the collection of bronzes was constructed in 1963. The Contemporary Art building was opened in 1984, and the new Children's Museum, in 1988.

Things to do at Chennai Government Museum

The Government Museum of Chennai has six buildings to explore:

• Main Building with a variety of paintings, stones and sculptures
• Front Building with a collection of arms, puppets and other art pieces
• Bronze Gallery with bronze sculptures, old coins and chemically preserved artefacts
• Children's Museum with various educational exhibits
• National Art Gallery with traditional paintings and arts
• Contemporary Art Gallery with British-time portraits, modern arts and other exhibits

Then, you also have the Museum Theatre to check out. Cultural and academic programs are conducted here from time to time. It also acts as a venue for performing arts, like dramas and music concerts.

Chennai Government Museum also houses the Connemara Public Library . It consists of centuries-old publications and some of the rare literary collections in the country.

Government museum chennai timings and entry fee.

The Government Museum opens at 9.30 AM and closes by 5 PM. It is open throughout the year, except for the Fridays and National holidays.

Government Museum Chennai entry fee is ₹15 per adult and ₹10 per kid (below 12 years). For school kids and teachers (in a group), the entry fee is ₹5 per person. The ticket prices for foreigners are ₹250 (adults), ₹125 (kids) and ₹75 (for students and teachers in groups).

The fee for still photography is ₹200, and ₹500 for videography. Commercial photography is not permitted in the complex.

Best time to visit Chennai Government Museum

Winter, from November to February, is the most favourable for a visit to the Government Museum. The weather remains pleasant throughout the day during those months. Visit it in the morning hours to avoid any crowd. You can spend 2-3 hours to get a full tour of the complex.

How to reach Government Museum Chennai?

Government Museum Chennai is on Pantheon Road in Egmore. It is about three km away from Chennai Central railway station and only one km away from Egmore railway station. From Koyambedu bus terminus, it is 10 km away. And from the airport, the Government Museum is 20 km away.

By metro – Chintadripet station, about 2 km away, is the nearest MRTS station to the Government Museum. From there, you can hire a taxi/auto to the museum.

By bus – Public buses are also available to Egmore bus stop, which is a little over a km away from the museum. You can take a taxi/auto from there.

Established in 1851, Government Museum of Chennai is popular as the Madras Museum. Factually being the second oldest museum of India (after Kolkata’s Indian Museum), this museum is a treasure in itself! As a rich repository of finest masterpieces of art, archaeology, anthropology, numismatics and much more, the Madras Museum assures to lure one and all.

Spread across an area of 16.25 acres of land, the Government Museum is also counted among the largest museums of South Asia. Its campus has six independent buildings with 46 galleries. These are:

Main building, where you will find artifacts and sculptures from the past, animal galleries, botany galleries and philately gallery. Front building has a very interesting puppet gallery and galleries preserving the folk art and music.

If by any chance, the hirer cancelled the booking Rs.5000/- paid as Advance Caution Deposit will be forfeited. Balance amount to be remitted 15 days before the actual date of performance. Police permit should be obtained from the Commissioner of Police, Egmore, Chennai-600 008 for conducting the performance. Arrangements for the provision of public address system and extra lighting except open halogen lamps may be made by you through a E.B. License holder. Standby generator may be arranged by you for use during electricity failure. All steps will be taken by the museum authorities for the up keep of the A/C units. But the Museum Department is not responsible, if the A/C. equipment is not working due to electricity or technical failures. During water scarcity the applicant may arrange for water at their own expenses. Eatables will not be allowed in the Museum Theatre and Theatre Verandah and Premises. The Museum Theatre should be kept clean by the users during and after the programme and also hand over the Theatre as it is given to the hirer. Stickers, posters should never the fixed in the walls or fixtures of the Museum Theatre. Wooden stage, screens, walls etc., should never be used for any other purposes. Safety of life is very important and all precautions should be taken by those who book the Museum Theatre, to ensure the safety of human life as well as the heritage. Regarding fire and safety precautions, the decision of museum authorities is final. Sale of Coffee or Soft drinks will be allowed only near the main entrance (opp.to Museum Theatre with the premission from the authorities). The Museum rules should strictly be adhered to, if not the hirer will be fined Rs.10,000/-. This amount will be recovered from the caution Deposit . If any hirer wants to Exhibit (Sales Products) they should obtain permission from the authorities to do so. After due permission alone they will be allowed to display their exhibits. If by any chance, the programme has to be cancelled after remitting the full amount including the caution deposit, only 50% of the rent amount will be refunded. Musical programmes should obtain NOC from "The Indian Performing Right Society Ltd" to conduct the programme in the Museum Theatre.   Sd......... Addl. The Government Museum, Chennai, or the Madras Museum , is a museum of human history and culture located in the Government Museum Complex in the neighbourhood of Egmore in Chennai, India.

Started in 1851, it is the second oldest museum in India after the  Indian Museum  in Kolkata and is the tenth oldest Museum in the World. It is particularly rich in archaeological and numismatic collections.

It has the largest collection of Roman antiquities outside Europe. Among them, the colossal Museum Theatre is one of the most impressive.

The National Art Gallery  is also present in the museum premises. Built in  Indo-Saracenic  style, it houses rare European and Asian painting of renowned artists, including that of  Raja Ravi Varma . 

It is the third largest museum in the world, and with 0.6 million visitors in 2018. It has the richest collections of bronze idols, 500 of them dating to 1000 BCE, in Asia.

The Archaeological Section of the Museum is primarily concerned with the acquisition, preservation and display of antiquities of the historic period of South India.

The antiquities consist of sculptures, architectural pieces, metal and stone inscriptions which have a bearing on the past history and social life of the people of this part of India.

A significant collection of objects representing the industrial arts such as wood carving, ivory work, metalware, inlay and embossed works for which South India has been famous from very early times, is also dealt with by the Section.

The objects mentioned above have been slowly accumulated and preserved in the Museum since its inception. They were organized into the present form about 1938 AD due to the efforts of Dr. F.H.Gravely.

Though prior to the formation of the Section, sporadic research on certain groups of antiquities have revealed the importance of the objects and thus made the Museum well known yet only after the formation of the Section more detailed studies of the antiquities of the Museum were undertaken, and the results of the studies published in a series of Museum Bulletins.

Gradually, the scope of research work of the Section, initiated by Dr.Gravely, was expanded so as to include other allied subjects such as temple architecture. The activities of the Section, thus, increased and as a consequence, it grew rapidly in size.

Collections

The collections of the Section may be grouped as follows, each group being important and interesting in its own way:

(1) Bronze figures, (2) specimens of sculpture and architectural pieces, (3) inscriptions and (4) industrial art objects.

The study of the objects of the first three groups is essential for a proper evaluation of the levels of culture reached by the people of the different periods and localities to which they belong.

The inscriptions are, however, the main source for the history of the country as also for its social life.

The study of the specimens of the industrial arts reveals how dexterous the South Indian craftsmen were in their application of various art motifs to objects used in daily life or on ceremonial occasions.

Bronze figures

     By far the best known objects of the Section are the metal figures. There are over 1500 of them in the Museum, of which about 85 are Buddhist, about two dozen Jain and the rest Hindu.

This Museum is perhaps the only institution in the whole world, where such a large collection of metal figures is assembled under a single roof.

One must  remember here that there are countless figures of this kind in the innumerable temples of South India.

This bewildering quantity will itself suffice to show the extent to which the art of casting images or figures in metal had been practiced in this part of India in the past-unprecedented in the history of any other country in the world.

As several of them are so wonderfully wrought and are in accordance with the accepted canons of aesthetics, they are amongst the world’s best treasures of art.

The Art Section

The Chennai Museum has a good collection of paintings and sculptures, both traditional and modern.

The traditional paintings of Tanjore, Rajput, Moghul, Kangra, Deccani schools and modern paintings in Oil, Tempera, Water Colour, Graphics and Acrylic mediums.

Graphics and modern style metal sculptures are also in the collections. 

Tanjore paintings depict the figures of Tanjore Maratha Kings and Queens and Puranic (mythological) scenes from Tamil Literature. 

Rajput paintings belong to 16th and 17th centuries AD. They illustrate the rhythm of love based on musical modes. The court scene of Emperor Babur, portraits of Jehangir, Shah Jehan, animals and birds are the subject matter of Moghul paintings.

The Kangra paintings represent Krishna legends as the main subject. There are twelve Portraits of British Governors and Governors-General in the collections.

The Raja Ravi Varma paintings, which are considered as National Treasures, have been placed in a gallery with Fibre Optic lighting. This system of lighting gives a dramatic lighting effect. It also removes ultra-violet and infra- red rays, which are harmful to the paintings.

The Contemporary Art Gallery has been lit using Dichroic Halogen lamps. These lamps reflect back the heat. Therefore, the paintings are prone to the least possible damage. They also have a pleasing visual effect.
