My husband and I completed this tour in June 2023. (ages 63 & 73) was one of our all time favorite tours and we have done many over the past several years. It was absolutely stunningly beautiful. We were super lucky with the weather. They called it a heat wave and a drought, we called it no rain for 7 days! The last day we rode downhill in a cooling mist of rain. We stayed an extra night on the front end in Killarney so had time on our own to explore the surroundings. We met some walkers who were walking the Kerry Way and ran into them again in Sneem. The Irish people are so friendly and helpful! The lodging for the most part was great with one exception because it was on top of a pub and therefore hot with the windows closed but really noisy until 3am with the windows open. It was unusually warm and most places do not have A/C but under normal circumstances that is not an issue. We never had to put on the warm clothes we brought but very comfortable in our regular cycling Read More gear. There was one pass that is one of the most beautiful that got so steep we had to push our e-bikes up. We had no issues with running out of battery power at the end of the day. Loved the towns we visited especially Dingle and the Dingle peninsula. We were warned about the busses and the narrow roads but found all motorists to be very respectful of cyclists. We did the self guided tour and never had an issue with the navigation. Highly recommend!!

It would be helpful if the bikes were equipped with an odometer so that including distances to the next turn. In addition or instead of a 15 page direction packet with paragraph instructions on where to turn maps of each days recommended rides would have been extraordinarily helpful. Without google gps and our own planning we wouldn’t have reached each destination in our self guided trip without getting lost and having to backtrack to see where we went wrong. The first day was frustrating without knowing we just needed to use google instead of the provided information. In addition a plastics zipper bag to carry the maps was less than adequate in a country with so much rain. We took several wrong turns and didn’t feel directions telling up to look for a blue barn where helpful. A positive is that the locals are Read More super nice and helpful!

Our Ireland Bike Tours

There are few places on this earth that can match the west of Ireland for pure, rugged beauty.  There is an extraordinary light here that makes everything appear more vivid: the white-sand beaches, the moss-covered moors, and the cloud-shrouded mountains.

Along the coast, Atlantic rollers crash into sheer cliffs, while deep inlets are home to sheltered fishing harbors and white-sand beaches.  Inland, you will find rolling, emerald-green farmland segmented by ancient hedgerows and drystone walls.

Complementing the scenery is the warmth of the welcome from a people who seem always to have time to talk and a love of sharing.  Sites include bronze-age stone circles, medieval castles and ancient monasteries.  The pubs, with their snugs, stouts and live music, complete the pictures to create an area that will stimulate the senses and leave you with many happy memories. The Intermediate route follows the Leisure route with the addition of an out-and-back to Brandon Point: a local beauty spot with stunning views from the clifftops across to the Magharee Islands in the Atlantic Ocean.

The Challenge riders start on the coast in Brandon. From here, the route heads east alongside Tralee Bay before going south across the peninsula through the Slieve Mish Mountains for some steep riding along quiet country lanes.

RIDE OPTIONS

Leisure 20 miles with 1,500 feet of climbing

Intermediate 30 miles with 2,300 feet

Challenge 45 miles with 2,900 feet

OVERNIGHT TOWN

The pretty fishing village of Dingle, with its narrow streets and brightly- colored houses, is a charming place to wander. The Irish pubs, complete with live music, just add to the charm. There is even a dolphin – Fungie – who has lived in the harbor for the past 32 years.

Day Two - Dingle Loops

Today’s Slea Head loop ride (part of the Wild Atlantic Way) has some of the most stunning scenery in Ireland: sheltered harbors, sandy beaches, spectacular mountains and classic seascapes. Sights include a prehistoric fort, ancient dry-stone beehive huts, and the Celtic Museum on the cliffs of Dunquin.

Leisure riders hug the coast around to Dunquin and then have the option of taking a boat tour out to the abandoned island of Great Basket (own arrangements). You could also visit a whiskey distillery, a leather workshop, and a working sheep farm.

The Intermediate ride follows the Leisure route to Dunquin but then continues around the Dingle Peninsula to the picturesque village of Ballyferriter. From here, you climb across open moorland to return to Dingle.

Challenge riders follow the Intermediate route around the Slea Head loop and then add on a loop to the east that includes Inch Beach, the Slieve Mish Mountains and Conor Pass.

Day Three - Dingle to Killarney

Today you travel from the small fishing village of Dingle to the vibrant city of Killarney.

Strong Intermediate and Challenge riders will ride all the way – leaving Dingle on a ridge ride that has sweeping views down to the Atlantic Ocean. After descending to Inch Beach, you enjoy a flat cruise alongside Castlemaine Harbour stopping at the quaint market town of Milltown for lunch. Shortly before reaching the city of Killarney, you pass Aghadoe with its jaw-dropping views of Killarney and Lough Leane. The site also includes ruins of a 13th-century castle and a Romanesque church – well worth a visit.

Leisure riders will take a van transfer before joining the ride described above at Milltown.

If you arrive early enough, Killarney National Park has some very scenic bike rides, walks and boat rides. The park is on the outskirts of the city of Killarney.

Shortly before reaching the city of Killarney, you pass Aghadoe with its jaw-dropping views of Killarney and Lough Leane

Leisure 15 miles with 950 feet of climbing

Intermediate 45 miles with 2,500 feet

The bustling resort town of Killarney was founded in the 18th Century to welcome visitors to some of the world’s most sublime lakeland scenery. The town abuts the tranquil Killarney National Park with its ancient castle and monastery set on one of the most beautiful lakes in Ireland.

Day Four - Killarney Loops

Today’s stunning rides head west of Killarney into the Iveragh Peninsula.

Leisure riders start the day riding to the 15th- century Ross Castle from where you board a small motorboat (own arrangements) that weaves past multiple islands and a 7th-century ruined monastery. The boat docks at Lord Brandon’s Cottage – a good lunch stop. From here you ride up the wild and craggy Gap of Dunloe. At the top of the pass there are stunning views in all directions as you begin a five-mile descent down a steep-sided valley past mountain lakes, over stone bridges and past horse-drawn buggies. From the end of the descent it is an easy run back to Killarney.

The Intermediate ride is similar to the Leisure ride except that you ride around Lough Leane rather than taking the boat.

The Challenge ride starts out through the Gap of Dunloe before heading into MacGillycuddy’s Reek – the mountain range that stretches down the Iveragh Peninsula and includes Ireland’s highest peaks. The Epic ride takes on more mountains and mileage around the northern stretches of the Ring of Kerry.

Day Five - Killarney to Kenmare

The Leisure ride leaves Killarney on bike paths that skirt Lough Leane through Killarney National Park. After 10 miles of pleasant lake-side riding, you start the vista-rich climb up to Molls Gap. This section of road crosses open heathland with stunning views across to the MacGillycuddy’s Reek mountain range. At the top of the climb, there is a café where you can toast your success and savor the views. From Molls Gap, you enjoy a 5-mile descent followed by an easy cruise into Kenmare alongside the shores of Kenmare Bay.

Intermediate riders follow the Leisure ride to Molls Gap where the ride extends west along quiet country lanes lined with hedgerows to Blackwater Bridge. From here, you cruise along the coast into Kenmare.

The Challenge ride heads due west from Killarney for a hilly adventure on the backroads of the MacGillycuddy’s Reek mountain range. The Epic ride heads even further west – along the spine of MacGillycuddy’s Reek to the Atlantic coast. Both rides end by following the scenic Ring of Kerry into Kenmare.

Kenmare is beautifully located at the head of the Kenmare River. The town is confidently cosmopolitan with gracious architecture and some excellent restaurants. There is a bronze-age stone circle in a park on the outskirts of the town.

Day Six - Kenmare Loops

These loop rides explore the magnificent and unspoiled Beara Peninsula. With flat riding at the coast and hills along the spine, there is something for everyone.

The Leisure route is an in-and-out ride to Gleninchaquin Park – a working sheep farm in the folds of the Caha Mountains. The route up to the farm takes you past a string of picturesque lakes and a bronze-age stone circle. The café at the farm makes a great lunch stop before a downhill run back to Kenmare.

The Intermediate route goes further west, through a chain of pretty fishing villages. The challenge on this route is a two-mile climb up to Lake Glanmore. After the climb, there are a couple of great options for lunch – including the aptly-named Pedals and Boots Café. Cruise back to Kenmare along the coast.

The Challenge route push deeper into the Beara Peninsula reaching as far as the bustling port town of Castletownbere in County Cork.

Whichever ride you choose, your guide will meet you in Kenmare for your end-of-tour transfer

BIKE CHOICES

Hybrid bike.

Hybrids bikes, a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike

Hybrids bikes are a cross between a mountain bike and a road bike. They have a relaxed riding position and are great for beginners and intermediate riders. A typical model is the Trek 7.3 FX with Shimano components and high-pressure road tires for better cycling efficiency than your typical hybrid.

Road bikes, a racing style bike with drop handlebars

Our road bikes are a racing style bike with drop handlebars. The road bikes are faster bikes than the hybrids with less upright riding position. A typical model is the Émonda ALR 5 with aluminum frame, carbon forks, and Shimano 105 components. (NOTE: Some of the smaller roads in Puglia can be a little rough making a hybrid bikes a better choice for some riders.)

eBikes, designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills

Our eBikes are designed to give you a little extra assistance when climbing hills. The ride position is very similar to our hybrids. We typically rent Scott E-Sub equipped with a 250W E-drive Bosch motor. If one rider in a couple is stronger than the other, an eBike can be a great choice for the less-strong rider.

Your Own Bike, if you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there

If you have a favorite bike, we can help you get it to your destination as well as set it up once it is there. Please ask about options for bike shipping and assembly.

Guides were FANTASTIC. The trip itself was spectacular, one day better than the next. Irish Songs sung by our guide, talk on the history of the Republic and Northern Ireland, the history of Kenmare; made you understand how proud the people are of there country. The rides, the views, were all amazing. Would highly recommend this trip, and these guides made it very special.

This was my 20th trip with Trek Travel and it was one of the best! The scenery was breathtaking, the riding superb, and the meals exquisite. The 26 mile loop we did through the Gap of Dunloe was the most scenic, engaging, and enjoyable ride I have done in many years. I would love to do it again!

Lone rider summits a mountain pass

There are so many highlights on this trip it would be hard to choose one. The green of Ireland just seems to be greener than any other place on earth. The people of Ireland welcome visitors like they are long lost friends. Cycling the Ring of Kerry area gives you some of the best scenery and views in Ireland-climbing the Gap of Dunloe week in and week out was one of my favorite parts of the trips. I was always ready to resist the urge to eat too many chocolate while visiting Lorge Chocolatier – Handmade Chocolate, and I usually failed at that. Overall, it's hard to describe the feeling of connectedness to the earth and to history while you are in Ireland, but it is a feeling I would suggest you never miss experiencing.

Guide Gratuities

For this trip, we suggest a tip for your guides between $240-$300 per guest and, of course, you may choose to give more if your guides made your trip an unforgettable experience. Additional Details

Know Before You Go!

We want you to be fully prepared for your cycling vacation of a lifetime. This involves making sure that you choose the appropriate trip for you and that every aspect of your experience is flawless. Each Trek Travel trip is unique to ensure maximum enjoyment every time.

Your Trip Need to Knows:

  • Road conditions: Little to no traffic on Irish backcountry roads, and when there is they are generally very respectful of cyclists! Road quality can vary – some roads will be in great shape, while others may not be as smooth. Expect wet roads due to rain. And, one should always be ready for sheep crossings.
  • Packing: Layers! Layering is the best way to regulate your body temperature. This tried-and-true strategy is all about slipping layers on and off as your activity level or the weather changes. Rain gear is a must for this trip!
  • Look right and keep left ! In Ireland, you cycle on the left side of the road along with traffic. Extra attention and caution are required as you ride, cross intersections, and enter traffic circles if this is the opposite side of the road that you are accustomed to.
  • Please note that the bikes you will ride on this trip are aluminium frames with mechanical shifting, which differs from our standard fleet. See the Bikes & Guides section for more information.

Before and After Your Trip

Killarney, Ireland

We recommend spending some time in Killarney before your trip. One of the town’s most popular attractions is in fact the town itself. Killarney meaning “church of the sloes”. Killarney is located at the Gateway to Killarney National Parklands. It is the largest town in county Kerry with a population of over 14,000 inhabitants. Although in saying this, the town centre is compact and easily manageable on foot for the best experience with a choice of art galleries, traditional craft shops, elegant boutiques, award-winning restaurants, and lively pubs there is plenty to experience. We recommend the following accommodations for your pre-trip hotel:

The Ross Hotel is a boutique hotel found in the center of the town of Killarney. Dublin, Ireland

While there is an endless amount of things to see in Ireland as a whole, the friendly capital city of Dublin is a destination that can't be missed! Here are but a few suggestions for spending an enjoyable time in this thriving, historical city: spend a few days in downtown Dublin listening to live music in the buzzing Temple Bar district; visit Trinity College’s Old Library, which houses the famous Book of Kells; view Ireland’s visual history at the National Photographic Archives; enjoy distillery tours, such as the Guinness Storehouse and the Old Jameson Distillery. Dublin's dining and entertainment is legendary, from the boozy delights of Temple Bar to more cultured nights at the theater to dining in one of the city's fine eateries including five one-star Michelin restaurants and one two-star eatery. We recommend the following accommodations for your post-trip hotel:

Packing and Weather

Average summer temperatures in Ireland range from the 60s to 70s Fahrenheit (15-26ºC). Always remember that rain is possible at any time of the year–daily Irish weather is very unpredictable and a source of great local entertainment! It’s a good idea to bring a light rain jacket, as well as layers. View our Packing List

Connemara Lazy Days

Admiring nature while cycling with kids in Connemara.

· connemara lazy days cycling.

We did this trip with our 3 children (6-12 years) and we loved every minute of it. The bikes were great, the maps and organisation really good. It did not feel that "lazy", with trips of 50 km and lots of wind and activities along the way. Nice were: the beaches, islands, pubs, abbey, sheep farm and swimming pool in one hotel. We all fell in love with the nature of this piece of the world!

Interrupted trek

Fabulous day and a half. An unfortunate accident resulted in a trip to the hospital. Wet grounds and inexperienced riding led to crash and 9 stitches. Great help by tour staff to get us from hotel to hotel to finish the route. We recommend warning riders of the risks of skids and to always wear helmet. BTW modify your brochure to show riders to wear helmets. It doesn't.

Wild Atlantic Way Cycling

Wonderful ramble in Ireland.

· wild atlantic way cycling.

We just returned from our 4th bike tour, the Wild Atlantic Way. We want to thank Connor and the entire Connemara team for the trip preparation. The bikes, although a bit on the heavy side, were in great shape and performed beautifully the entire week. The maps helped and never hindered the fun. Connor spent considerable time with us on the first day suggesting stops at historic or scenic sites, restaurants and shops. He also showed us how to extend each day with side routes. We took him up on this on a least four of the six days of riding. So, if you’re thinking of passing up this trip because there isn’t enough riding, you can more than double the mileage on all but one day if you wish. The tour presents a whole host of different landscapes to ride through: eerie bogs, the Bundarogha river, the Killary fjord and the dramatic bens that seem to rise right out of the water. We loved rolling under a green tunnel of trees, then entering a new vista of green fields edged in ancient stone walls. The excursion to the island of Inishbofin is well worth it and we were lucky enough to meet and mingle with the archeologists who are researching and recording the island’s fascinating history. The evenings are not just for taking notes about the day’s adventures: lots of pubs serve up live traditional music along with local lamb, beef and seafood. This is a great tour, well organized and supported. We highly recommend it.

Naer Lettergesh (photo by TJS53)

Every day was different. The landscape was always awesome. Every place we stayed was great. Also every town had great choices for food and drink. Ireland it turns out has great restaurants with great prices. The bikes provided were excellent.

Beautiful bike ride but not a good value at the price.

This is a remarkable part of Ireland with an amazing history and a haunting landscape that is quickly changing as this part of Ireland attracts more visitors.

First the good parts: we were a family of six and had a wonderful biking vacation. The people at Connemara Adventure Tours were very helpful and kind. Specific thanks to Conor and Chloe who were so thoughtful as we arrived and set out on our first day. There were no issues with baggage transfers etc.

But here are a few critical things to consider before booking this trip.

1. Clifden is the only true town on this trip and yet only the first and last nights are spent here. If you are looking for music, as an example, it will be difficult (if not impossible) to find at the other destinations. In Clifden there are several pubs with music every night of the week and a much wider selection of eating options.

2. The idea of a Connemara Loop is nice in concept when looking at the map but the B&Bs we experienced were not at all consistent and a couple just seemed cheap considering what we paid. One happy exception was Connemara Country Lodge on our last evening. "Singing Mary", the host, was the epitome of Irish hospitality.

3. At €900 ($1000) this is not an inexpensive trip for six people. But if I had friends wanting to repeat this trip, I would suggest they find a good bike rental in Clifden (€100/week per person). Get a nicer B&B or house rental in Clifden and stay put and bike north and south from there. And then work with a local guide to plan daily loops that align with the ability and interest of your group. It would also be easier to manage the weather issue since this part of Ireland is often cloudy and wet.

4. The maps and assistance by Conor on routes and restaurants along the way were very helpful. But the condition of the bikes were just average. And when they charged for panniers and "souvenir" water bottles as we prepared to leave, I felt nickel and dimed. Note to Connemara: when a family pays more than $6k for a week of cycling, kick in the panniers and water bottles or price accordingly so basics are not being charged. Grrrr.

Our family biked through Normandy earlier in the summer and the bikes and hotels were far better for a minor increase in cost. The lesson for me is that our next bike tour will be direct with a local operator so costs, routes, equipment and expectations about hotels and restaurants are better aligned.

Kylemore Abbey is certainly a highlight. (photo by Brendan)

BikeTours.com staff reply from Jim Johnson July 13, 2017

Thank you very much for your feedback. I'm sorry you weren't fond of the route and many of the overnight locations. When I did this tour two years ago with a friend, we actually loved the route and where we stayed. Likewise, all clients who have rated this tour until now have given it 5 stars, including for route and hotels. But you're absolutely right that it's not the best route if you want music and nightlife each evening. It's more for those who prefer rustic settings. Preferences definitely come into play.

We're going to be in touch with Chloe at Connemara Adventure Tours and inquire why you were charged for the panniers and water bottles. To my knowledge, that has never happened before. If you send an email to me at [email protected], I'll make sure we reimburse you for those costs.

You mentioned that next time you'd book directly with the local operator. As you noted, Connemara Adventure Tours was the local operator in your case. BikeTours.com serves as their representative, and we keep their pricing. We have similar relationships with about 70 local companies across Europe. So, while we were an intermediary, you traveled with the local tour company that designed and operated your tour. And we hope you'll continue to book your tours through us!

Awesome tour of the West Coast!

This bike trip was a great way to see the beautiful country in western Ireland. The route was easy to follow and there was a lot to see. I would highly recommend it.

We had only one day of rain, and two windy days. Those were probably the hardest days, because of the weather, not the route. Be sure to pack rain gear. We chose to stay in the bed and breakfasts, which I highly recommend. Most of the bed and breakfast were great, the hosts very friendly. It gave us a chance to get to know locals and ask lots of questions about what we were seeing.

Most of the bed and breakfasts were located near the town and pubs. The pubs had great food and friendly locals. We were not disappointed with any of the food on our trip. We saw lots of sheep, donkeys, cows, mountains, and the ocean.

The bikes provided were great, the maps and other information was also very easy to use and follow.

Wild Atlantic Way - Late August 2016

Varied scenery with the ocean, so many lakes and mountain views, we did not expect. The people were all so friendly and helpful.

Well wasn't that fun!

My wife and I decided to try our first biking vacation in Ireland. As we're both over 60 we found the hills to be a bit challenging at times. But when we needed a rest we'd just stop and be amazed at the views in every direction. From our first ride around Lake Eske to the cliffs near Carrick to the descent towards Ardara, we enjoyed all the memorable stops on our adventure. As another writer encouraged, try to catch some local music. Just excellent!

Cycling the Wild Atlantic Way in Ireland

My wife and I greatly enjoyed our tour along Ireland's west coast. The slow pace allowed for many stops, great views, and meeting locals in B and B's and pubs. Mostly on back roads, we encountered very little traffic, and even when we did, the local drivers were well aware of us, slowed until they could safely pass, or expressed appreciation when we pulled over to let them pass. Our longest days were 45 and 38 km, and the rest closer to 30 km. We were in pretty good condition for the tour, though we do not bike these distances regularly, and felt comfortable with them each day, albeit a little saddle sore. Weather was cool and cloudy, so good for cycling, and only occasional showers for which we were well prepared with rain gear. The bike were in good condition, and geared appropriately for the hilly terrain. Tools for adjusting seats and gear shifters were provided, and we made use of them. We would have preferred to sit more upright on the bikes, but this was not possible since handle bars could not be raised. With this exception, the bikes were comfortable. We rented one pannier between the two of us for rain gear and extra clothing. Wind was occasionally a factor, especially when facing west toward the Atlantic, but as soon as we headed east or northeast, it was at our back and an asset. The B and B hosts were friendly and helpful with advice. Most were well located near pubs for dinners, and all provided very hearty and tasty breakfasts. The pubs along the way were great for a generous bowl of seafood chowder and a beer--a good energy boost on cool days, as well a spots to dodge occasional showers. The scenery was spectacular along the route, including seascapes and pristine beaches, lakes, farms, sheep, Connemara ponies, donkeys, the 12 Bens mountains, and small, friendly towns.

Lovely and Idyllic Trip!

Such green vistas, amazing coastal scenery, contrasted by the ubiquitous sheep splashed with color (never did manage to get a satisfactory picture of their markings), happy cows and Justin Bieber-looking Shetland Ponies. Fantastic side trips to solitary beaches & caves, a rowing trip to a ring fort island. Make sure to stay out late one night and marvel at the local and family feel of the music-makers at the pubs. Recommend the trip in late May, we had almost perfect weather.

Beautiful Ireland West Coast Bicycle Trip

A great way to experience this wonderful region of Ireland. My wife and I decided on a late August tour and weren't disappointed, but be prepared for changeable weather each day, from rain and clouds to sunny and warm. Definitely rent some panniers to hold rain gear, jacket, etc. The bicycles performed well and we cycled through all the gears in the hilly countryside. The Connemara Tour staff were friendly and very helpful. Many of the B&Bs had fabulous views out to the sea and mountains and all rooms were comfortable and near town centers or other points of interest.

Amazing support!

Beautiful views every day! If we had any questions or problems, our host was always just a phone call away. We were very well cared for! I loved having the evening meals also included at the hotel where we stayed. After a long day of biking it was nice to be able just relax without having to go out in search of a Pub or restaurant for dinner.

Our first bike tour

· highlights of the highlands: donegal by e-bike.

It was harder than expected with many more steep hills than described but the B&B's at the end of each day were a welcome reward. We had wet weather for most of our tour however, the beauty and the variety of the landscape came through the clouds and damp weather. Seamus was very helpful and fixed any problem we had right away.

Great cycling through beautiful countryside

Beautiful countryside, great cycling for riders of all abilities, very helpful outfitter, excellent hotels and meals.

Amazing adventure!

This was a great trip for 2 friends to take together! It was my first bike trip ever and I can't wait to go on another! The bikes were comfortable enough for me to ride without padded shorts and there was a lot of flexibility in extending or taking short cuts most days, to accommodate how we were feeling. It was great to feel active every day! Some of the hills were a challenge but we always made it. I commute to work on a bike in San Francisco but don't do any longer rides. The food was excellent and we had great luck with the weather. The trip was a great mix of beautiful scenery, small town charm, and history/culture. I highly recommend it!

A Most Excellent Adventure in Donegal County

From stunning scenery to quiet roads and a variety of climbing challenges, from lovely B&B’s and gracious hosts/hostesses to charming villages, from dependable bikes to near-perfect cue sheets and maps, Seamus Gallagher, owner of Ireland by Bike, has planned an adventure we will remember for years to come.

Beautiful Scenic Bike Tour

The perfect way to experience Ireland! My husband and I biked this tour in September 2014 and were totally taken away by beautiful Connemara region. Along the way, we enjoyed beer and seafood in local pubs and a smoked mackerel and champagne in Ballynahinch Castle. The bicycles were in good condition and the accommodation in B&Bs was fine for us. The hosts were friendly, the facilities clean and the Irish breakfast huge and delicious. I bought us all the rain-gear I could find, but we did not need it once. Some mornings were foggy but it only added to the charm of the countryside.
