Having conquered the world of technology in Gadget Man, acclaimed Director, Author and BAFTA-winning actor Richard Ayoade deserves a break. But there’s a problem; he hates going on holiday. For Richard, travel is boring and stressful and takes far too long. Surely there must be a way to make it more fun, more efficient, and less tedious? ‘Travel Man’ is Richard’s chance to show us where we’re going wrong by having the most culturally efficient holiday possible, with all the boring bits taken out.

1. Barcelona

Richard wants to relax in Barcelona but his companion Kathy Burke has not had a holiday abroad for over a decade and has a lot of pent up vacationing energy to expend. She may not have the same relaxing cultural break in mind as him.

2. Istanbul

Richard and Adam Hills charter a yacht to cross the Bosphurus into Asia but decide they prefer the ferry back. They dine out on raki and tripe soup, which they decide is perhaps a little ‘too Turkish’. Adam tries his hand at bartering when he buys a carpet in the grand bazaar and Richard subjects himself to a traditional Turkish shave with a cut throat razor.

Despite the cold and the lack of daylight, Iceland is a popular destination in the winter but can Richard see the appeal? Jessica and Richard use a helicopter to cram 10 hours of sightseeing into 3 before dining out on rotten shark. Suitably refreshed they set out to go whale watching, see the Northern Lights and cast a clinical eye over the famous Blue Lagoon spa.

4. Marrakech

Richard and Stephen Mangan immerse themselves in the culture of the city as they visit its famous 'horrific smelling' tanneries and try eating sheep’s head. They also attempt to negotiate the desert terrain outside the city by balloon and camel, before explore the Saadian tombs and try their hands at traditional storytelling.

Travel Man is a series that offers a unique guide to the ultimate 48 hours in a city. Each week, acclaimed actor and film director Richard Ayoade and a celebrity guest visit a different destination with the aim of having a holiday with all the boring bits taken out. The result is a half-hour programme that's an inspiration for viewers to travel and try and get more out of their holiday. Richard and his guest have a varied and full itinerary that involves visiting popular attractions and heading off the beaten track. For example, in Istanbul, they visited the Hagia Sophia and sought out an historic Turkish bath. In Barcelona, they visited Barcelona's FC's museum and a cutting-edge restaurant.

12 things to know before you go to Montréal

Montréal offers a wide range of experiences for the traveler – here's what you need to know before you go © Justin Bisson-Beck / Getty Images

I grew up in Ottawa but my dad was raised in Montréal and still had a lot of friends there, so we’d visit all the time while I was growing up. I can still feel the excitement that tingled in my body every time we went. Montréal was, and is, so thrilling, from the language locals speak (French with a distinct Québécois accent) to the roads (the drivers are super aggressive and you can’t turn right on a red) to the overall fun-loving vibe. So as soon as I could, I moved to Montréal at age 17 to attend Concordia University and I’ve spent much of the last 15 years there.

While construction can make Montréal tough to navigate and rhetoric battles between native French and English speakers persist (I am bilingual so I hear it from both sides), I love this city so much – it’s one of my favorite places in the world. 

That said, there are plenty of rules about living in Montréal that took me years to understand. So even if French is your native language,  here’s a little cheat sheet of 13 things to know before you visit, including whether you can get by in English (you can) and how cold it gets (really cold, but not always).

1. Plan at least three days to visit

If you’re splitting your time between Montréal and Québec City, leave more time for Montréal. There’s much more to see and eat, and some of the city's best moments involve hanging out on a terrasse or in a public park watching the world go by.

2. Go in early summer or fall to escape the cold

Yes, Montréal gets really cold. In January and February, temperatures can drop to -40°C/F with the wind chill, and the city is blanketed in snow and slippery ice. Locals survive by layering up and popping into heated cafes and other venues. And no, locals don’t spend all winter in underground tunnels as some might lead you to believe, but there are some that connect malls downtown.

Montréal isn’t always frigid, though. In June, July and August, the mercury can shoot up to the 30°C (86°F) range and everyone gets particularly excited about the warmth after a long, harsh winter. September and October are great, too, as you’ll get to see tree leaves transform into majestic yellows and reds. 

November and March can be rainy and gray, and there isn’t much to do but complain about how long winter is in Montréal.

3. Bike or metro around

I’ve driven in plenty of countries around the world, and I’d have to say driving in Montréal is one of the worst experiences behind the wheel. Drivers will cut you off without notice and if roads aren’t blocked by dozens of infamous (and highly meme-able) orange construction cones, they’re closed for pedestrians in summer. Plus, parking involves a PhD in physics – check all the signs carefully and park where the arrows are not pointing. 

So, ditch the car and get around on foot or by bike. Montréal has an excellent, affordable bikeshare program called Bixi , which has both regular and electric-assisted bikes available for one-way trips or with a cheap monthly pass. You can also take the metro (subway) to get a feel for life as a Montrealer.

If you do drive, note that you cannot turn right on a red light on the island of Montréal.

4. Don’t spend all your time downtown

Montréal is designed to stuff all the tourists into the Old Port and Downtown, but so much of the city’s magic is in its neighborhoods like Le Plateau, Mile End and St-Henri. Be sure you leave time to explore outside the city core.

5. Make restaurant reservations and prepare to line up

One thing that surprised me when I started living in Montréal is that there are always lineups outside restaurants, regardless of the weather and especially at food institutions like Schwartz’s Deli (smoked meat) and La Banquise (poutine). Leave time to wait in line for establishments that don’t take reservations, and book ahead at those that do. Some restaurants, like Joe Beef , require reservations months in advance.

6. Montréal has its own definition of east and west

Montréal streets are often marked ‘est’ (east) or ‘ouest’ (west), indicating where the road is in relation to Blvd St Laurent aka The Main – hence Rue Sherbooke O and Sherbrooke E. However, if you look at a map, these streets aren’t really east or west. They’re actually northeast and southwest due to the angle of the island. Don’t ask questions and just go with the local lingo. 

7. You aren’t required to speak French (but it’s appreciated)

French is Montréal’s official language, but you can get by in English as a visitor without a problem. After all, nobody can expect you to know every language of all places you visit. That said, it’s friendly to sprinkle in a bonjour or a merci where you can, or to practice any other French vocabulary you may have. Don’t be surprised, however, if Montrealers switch to English – they’re not being mean, they’re just trying to make your life easier.

8. You need to tip

You should tip at least 15% on your total bill after tax unless the service was atrocious. Servers are paid less than the minimum wage because tips are expected, so they rely on your generosity. Is it a screwed up system? Absolutely, but it’s the way it is and your personal tip boycott won’t fix anything.

9. The drinking age is 18, for cannabis it’s 21

Montréal has the lowest drinking age in Canada at 18 years old. You may be asked to show your ID (a driver’s license is fine) to prove your age when buying alcohol at the dépanneur, aka "the dep," a convenience store that sells snacks, beer and cheap wine. Same goes for the SAQ (government liquor and wine store).

Cannabis is legal in Montréal for those over age 21 and can only be purchased at an SQDC government store. Smoking weed in any public spaces, including parks and on the street, is illegal.

10. Have a boozy park picnic

Want a quintessential Montréal experience? Buy a bottle of wine and share it with friends or family in a lovely public park like Parc La Fontaine or Parc Jarry. But note that you can only legally drink alcohol at a picnic table and while eating a meal (ie. a baguette and brie cheese, not simply a bag of chips) or else you could be fined.

11. Cheer for the Habs

Montrealers go crazy for their local National Hockey League team, the Montréal Canadiens – aka the Habs – and the atmosphere at Centre Bell games and sports bars across the city is electric. Montréal is safe to walk around, but it’s always a good idea to walk in pairs at night no matter where you are. 

If you need to go to the hospital, make sure you have travel insurance – Quebec healthcare is only free for RAMQ card holders and prices will be extremely high if you need to pay out of pocket.

Montreal solo travel: why you should go alone on your next trip.

As someone who speaks a little French, I have a particular fondness for visiting Canada, especially the province of Quebec. For me, a solo trip to Montreal was truly special in many ways, especially as a (basic) French speaker and huge hockey fan. What’s not to love?

So are you ready and excited to take a solo trip to Montreal? Do you already have a list of things to do alone in Montreal? Then, believe me, I am super stoked for you. Montreal’s a wonderful city for both a weekend getaway, as well as an extended stay, and I promise you won’t run out of great attractions to keep you busy and happy.

If I’m being 100% honest and transparent with you, in addition to Vancouver and neighboring Quebec City (seriously, solo travel in Quebec is great), Montreal is one of my favorite cities in all of Canada. I loved it to pieces.

My Montreal Solo Trip Experience

This trip confirmed that Montreal is one of the best first time destinations for solo travel in Canada . No doubt.

Despite visiting in November, with colder weather, I still bravely ventured solo in Montreal and had an incredible time even though I only had three days to see the city. I explored neighborhoods, took pictures of street art, ate a lot of poutine, explored a world famous university campus, and so much more. I didn’t feel lonely at all.

Why else did I love Montreal so much do you ask? As some of you already know, I’m a huge hockey fan and had zero problems blowing my budget at a Canadiens game , on a Saturday night nonetheless! It will always be one of my favorite travel experiences. Totally worth spending $95 CAD. 

Anyway, in this post, I will break down the benefits of traveling alone to Montreal . You shouldn’t hold back, because you’re traveling by yourself.

And, if you’re a first time solo traveler, Montreal’s the perfect place to “get your feet wet.” This Canadian city will embrace you with open arms and lots of poutine.

Why You Should Travel Solo in Montreal

Alright, now let’s discuss Montreal’s complete and total awesomeness in detail. As you can already tell, I think that Montreal’s a fantastic city for solo travelers and definitely embodies most positives of traveling alone , haha. And I always tell the truth.

Perfect Solo Weekend Escape

First and foremost, Montreal’s very easy, especially for Americans on the east coast, and the city itself is relatively compact.

Coming from New Jersey, my flight was only 55 minutes long. 55 bloody minutes. Even a fearful flyer like me can do that. Just pack a small carry-on. The planes are usually small.

Excellent Public Transportation

Once you arrive in Montreal, it’s simple to reach all the sites by walking or taking the subway. I thought Montreal’s Metro was efficient, clean, and understandable.

I used the metro mostly during the day (I spoiled myself and took cabs at night), but I never felt unsafe on the platforms or trains. Montreal has great infrastructure in place for tourists.

No worries in that department.

Experience “France” in North America

Furthermore, at least for Canadians and Americans, Montreal is a great alternative if you want to travel to Europe, but don’t have the time or funds readily available.

For example, everyone spoke French in the streets and I felt as if I had been transported to a medium-sized city in France. It was super awesome that I didn’t go through jetlag hell to experience French culture.

As a side note, make sure to brush up on some French phrases before going to Montreal. 

Plenty of Opportunities to Meet New Friends

Finally you ought to go solo in Montreal, because meeting other travelers is easy in this part of Canada! For example, I talked to a lot of lovely people at my hostel, M Montreal , and met a fellow independent traveler on my food tour of Mile End. In Montreal, you don’t have to stay alone if you don’t want to.

Solo Travel Montreal: Essential Tips

Traveling to Montreal is a ton of fun and fairly easy, but it’s always better to be prepared before you travel alone.

Research is super important.

Luckily for you, I’ve written about all the best things to know about solo travel to Montreal including safety tips, solo travel friendly accommodation, essential items, and more!

What Should You Bring to Montreal?

These items are important for any time of year when you visit Montreal alone. Don’t leave them at home!

• A Compact Mirrorless Camera:  Your camera phone will work fine in a pinch, but if you want professional photos of Montreal, then you should step it up a notch. My favorite camera for travel is the Sony Alpha 6600 Mirrorless camera ! You will take gorgeous shots. 
• Lonely Planet French Phrasebook:  Practically everyone speaks English in Montreal, but it’s polite to learn a few phrases of French for your trip here. It demonstrates respect for Montreal’s culture. 
• Lonely Planet Montreal and Quebec City Guide:  Lonely Planet writes my favorite guidebooks! This city guide to Montreal and nearby Quebec will keep you up to date on the best attractions, restaurants, and hotels that the city has to offer visitors! 
• Stylish Black Walking Boot:  In Montreal, you will be walking around a lot, especially if you do the hike to Mont Royal. Bring these comfortable yet still fashionable walking boots to keep your feet happy!
• Travel Insurance:  Canada is known for its universal healthcare. However, this care is available to citizens. If you get sick in Canada, welp, you will have to pay out of pocket. Always buy travel insurance to cover illness and accidents overseas.

Purchase Travel Insurance Ahead of Time

Argh, time for my lecture about protecting yourself and your health. Here it goes. Don’t even think about exploring Montreal alone without good travel insurance. Seriously. Do. Not. Even. Think. About. It,

Sure, Canada has universal health care, but come on now, it’s for residents only and extremely expensive if you’re a traveler who falls ill. Don’t take the risk. You want travel insurance.

As for me, I always buy World Nomads for my trips and have had zero problems with them. Travelx Insurance is another wonderful platform that gives you the option for both “run of the mill” travel insurance and adventure insurance. Don’t leave home without it.

Prepare for the Cold Canadian Weather

Montreal is cold. Actually, in the dead of winter, Montreal is bloody freezing. You need to prepare ahead of time especially if you plan to spend a lot of time outdoors.

I’ll give you an example of how cold Montreal is. I took my solo trip to Montreal in early November.

However, walking outside in the wild and whipping winds after the Canadiens Game was one of the coldest moments of my life. Yes, almost as cold as snorkeling Silfra in winter. Part of the problem was that I underdressed for the weather. Don’t be me.

So, if you’re visiting Montreal in winter, take the chill in the air seriously. Wear thick gloves. Pack a scarf. Utilize layers and long underwear. You don’t want to freeze.

Pace Yourself at Night

Montreal has a great nightlife and you ought to go out. I’m not staying trap yourself inside your hostel.

However, make sure to pace yourself. I think 2-3 drinks is a reasonable limit when going out for several hours. If you’re nervous about going out alone at night, join up with a local pub crawl and make lots of new friends! There’s safety in numbers.

Learn to Speak a Little Bit of French

Montreal is located in Quebec where the primary language is French. It’s polite to learn a few phrases of French – even though everyone I met in Montreal spoke English. Saying “bonjour” upon entering a cafe or a small shop goes a long way in the hearts of locals.

Also – don’t be rude and tell people that the French spoken in Quebec isn’t real or not as “correct” as the French dialect spoken in France. Yes, it’s different, but not any less “correct.” Mind your manners. No one likes a “Know-It-All.”

Arrive to the Airport Early (If Going Back to the USA)

Whew, we made it, guys. My final tip for your Montreal solo travel experience is to know ahead of time if you need clear customs or not. I had to go through USA customs in Montreal instead of Newark. Which obviously takes time. If I had waited until later to call a cab, I wouldn’t have made it home.

Guys, I’m serious, you don’t want to goof off with time on flight days. Sure, I’m late sometimes for dinner or casual meetups, but I don’t mess around when it comes to arriving at the airport on time. Neither should you.

Exploring Montreal Alone — Is It Safe?

For obvious reasons, the biggest concern when traveling to any new place alone is safety. I receive emails and DMs about crime and safety all. the. time. And I completely get it.

However, for a city its size, I thought Montreal was very safe. As a solo female traveler, I experienced no harassment as I wandered Montreal during the day and night. Montreal has a decent sized homeless population (which is sad considering how cold it gets there), but they didn’t bother me once. Simply walk around like you own the place.

Regardless of my own experience, though, I still don’t want you to fall in the complacency trap. Let friends and family know where you’re staying, and provide them with a loose itinerary of your plans in Montreal.

Finally Montreal has a big party culture – which is one of the reasons this city is so popular. Avoid going out alone to the bars and clubs. Find other travelers at your hostel to tag along with if you want to enjoy Montreal’s nightlife.

Furthermore, you should exercise caution by keeping your drinking under control. Intoxication makes it a million times easier for unsavory people to take advantage of you. I promise I’m not victim blaming. No one has the right to harm another person – drunk or not – but limiting your alcohol intake is an easy way to remain aware of your surroundings.

As I’ve said, I mostly took cabs at night, and I think this was the right decision to make. While I don’t think it’s unsafe to walk alone, you can still minimize your risk by splitting cab fare with your newfound friends.

Where to Stay for My Solo Trip to Montreal

As always, I don’t recommend staying out in the distant suburbs for your solo trip in Montreal. You have plenty of accommodation choices right in Montreal’s downtown. Read reviews carefully. Don’t sacrifice cleanliness and comfort for price.

During my trip, I chose to stay at M Montreal Hostel and had a great time. The hostel was centrally located and clean with a very friendly and helpful staff. I loved the fresh croissants for breakfast, too!

The Best Things to Do Alone in Montreal

Montreal has a lot of great activities that you can do alone. Seriously, there’s an endless amount of things to do in Montreal and you won’t feel bored. I mean, I brag a lot on this blog about how Canada’s a perfect destination for new solo travelers for many reasons.

The main reason I love going to Canada? People, in general, leave you the heck alone. You’re not stared at. You’re also not subjected to some of the ridiculous scams that plague major European cities such as Paris.

At the same time, Canadians are truly lovable and friendly, and they will help you if you ask them. I’ve never had a bad encounter with the locals and Montreal was no exception! You’re free to do whatever you please.

Now let’s talk about what to do in Montreal alone.

Go to a Canadiens Game

Duh. Of course I’d mention this idea. I love hockey. Love, love, love hockey. It’s my favorite sport in the entire world.

Book tickets ahead of time. Hockey is very well loved and games sell out fast.

Although I went to the Canadiens game with another traveler, I definitely think you can go to the stadium alone and still have a great time! The fans are so passionate. Their adoration of hockey is contagious. Don’t miss out on this unique experience.

Take a Food Tour in Mile End.

Montreal’s known for its food. Seriously, you guys, you can’t visit Montreal and not eat.

I’m shy about eating alone so I took a food tour in Mile End with Local Food Tours. As you wander this gastronomic neighborhood, you’ll devour bagels, chocolate, wine, pastas, and so much more. I thought my stomach would burst (in the best possible way) at the end of our delicious adventure.

Hike to the Top of Mount Royal.

Do you like hiking? Then you’re in luck, because you’ll see the best views of Montreal from Mount Royal. I happened to go in the fall when all the leaves were yellow and orange. The scenery was to die for.

Use this time in nature to relax and reflect. You won’t regret it.

Go to the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts

I love going to art museums alone. What better time to reflect on life than to relax and stare at amazing art?

You can find Montreal Museum of Fine Arts on the historic Golden Square Mile stretch of Sherbrooke Street. This is the city’s largest museum and spans multiple buildings, so big art buffs might want to dedicate an entire afternoon to this museum.

Honestly, even if you don’t love art museums, I still think it is important to dedicate some of your time to a city’s culture. Art museums are a great avenue for doing just that.

Walk around McGill Campus 

Furthermore you want to visit McGill’s gorgeous campus when you take a solo trip in Montreal. I mean, I absolutely love visiting beautiful universities, so a splendid fall walk around McGill was an absolute treat for me! I seriously wish I would have attended college here. It is literally stunning. 

McGill is a top ranked university, which unsurprisingly consists of several elegant and historical buildings (the university was founded in 1821). You can easily walk to Mount Royal from McGill, too, making it a convenient place to visit after your lovely hike.

I have no doubt that a stroll around McGill is one of the best things to do in Montreal by yourself.

See Old Montreal

Although Quebec City is more well-known for its charm, you can still feel as if you’re in “old world” Europe when you visit the Old Montreal neighborhood.

This part of the city is a beacon to tourists so you won’t stand out or feel weird walking around alone.

My favorite places to visit were the famous (and luminously lit) Notre-Dame Basilica and the informative Pointe-a-Calliere Museum , which is dedicated to history and archeology.

Old Montreal is compact and easy to explore in a single day, making this neighborhood one best places to go alone in Montreal.

Montréal — the economic, industry, technology center of the Québec province and the second most populous city in Canada after Toronto with a population of around 4.2 million (Montreal Metropolitan in 2022). With 2 cultures Anglo-French coexisting and harmonizing, when traveling to Montreal, one of the tips that visitors should not miss is to learn a few basic French sentences to communicate, because there are half of Montrealers use French as their primary language.

Montreal blog: Overview of the city of Montreal

Montreal is a large and thriving city located in the province of Quebec, in the southwestern region of Canada. Montreal is about 150km from Ottawa and about 200km from Quebec City. Traditionally, Montreal once was known as the largest city in Canada and also the second largest city in the world after only to the French capital Paris.

If Toronto is one of the cities that bring slightly Urban Style in American style, Montreal is a bustling city in European style. The city of Montreal possesses a modern but equally romantic beauty. Add to that a bit of extravagance. As a large city with a immigrant population from more than 100 different countries, Montreal has a diverse, unique and rich culture.

A brief history of Montreal and culture

Montreal is located in southwestern Quebec on an island in the bed of the Saint Lawrence River, named after a hill on the island — Mount Royale. The Island of Montreal Island has been the land of the Algonquin, Huron and Iroquois indigenous for thousands of years before the French arrived to explore North America in the early 16th century.

In 1642, missionaries founded a village within the boundaries of present-day Montréal. That village was named Ville-Marie and it kept expanding. The majority of Ville-Marie’s population is French, but after Ville-Marie was handed back to the British Empire in 1760, immigrants from England, Ireland, Scotland and other parts of Europe also settled here. For that reason, Montreal is mainly a place of intersection between French and British cultures, a miniature of Europe in the heart of Canada.

Besides France, Montreal is home to the world’s largest French-speaking community: Nearly 50% of Montrealers speak French, more than half of Montreal’s population can speak both French and English very well.

Montreal brings the beauty of a romantic and poetic French city, from the ancient streets, calm river to the churches covered with green moss — All bring Montreal peace, leaving a deep impression in the heart of every visitor who have visited here.

Montreal travel blog: When should you visit to Montreal?

Montreal is a city influenced by continental climate with high average humidity throughout the year. Therefore, summer in Montreal is quite warm and pleasant. Summer is also the time when many exciting and attractive festivals in Montreal takes place such as Jazz Festiaval or Just for Laughs.

Most tourists who have traveled to Montreal will admit: Montreal is most beautiful and charming in the fall (September – November). Besides the fresh, cool and pleasant air, the autumn of Montreal also captivates visitors with the yellow and red color of the carpets of maple leaves. The whole space will be brilliant and romantic in the moment when the changing season comes.

Autumn is the most beautiful season of the year, when the trees begin to change their leaves colors and cover the city. While summer is the time for festivals like Jazz Festival in early July, Just for Laughs and Fantasia in mid-July.

Summer (June – August) is a favorable season for tourists from tropical regions like Singapore, Malaysia, Indonesia, Vietnam and other tropical countries the weather is hot and humid, the average temperature fluctuates around 20 degrees, convenient for sightseeing, outdoor activities.

Meanwhile, the winter of Montreal (December – February) is extremely harsh, with heavy snowfall, sometimes with very large blizzards. Snow falls from early December to early March. For that reason, you should visit Canada’s warmer cities like Vancouver.

Montreal travel guide: How to get to Montreal?

All flights to Montreal will land at Montréal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport which located just over 20km from the city center. The lowest airfare will be about USD 500 – 600 from Vietnam. You should book tickets at least 1 month in advance to save traveling costs.

In addition, you can also take a bus from Toronto, Ottawa or New York from the U.S. to Montreal with affordable prices. Train is also an interesting option. The trains run between Montreal and Halifax, Toronto and New York, it offers wireless networks and beers to drink during the trip.

Getting to Montreal from Toronto

Because I live in Toronto, so there is only Megabus is the cheapest option. But before buying tickets, you should pay attention to find coupons for Megabus, if you are lucky, you can buy tickets at a much lower price for the route Toronto-Montreal. To find these coupons, just go to Google and type a few keywords to get a “bunch” of suggestions. In addition, if you buy in groups, you can also get a discount.

It takes about 6 hours of traveling from Toronto to Montreal. One thing I forgot to say about Megabus is that the terminus is close to the Metro (subway), so it’s very convenient for commuting.

Besides Megabus you can take Greyhound , Via Rail … to get to Montreal from Toronto. If you don’t have a car but have a driver’s license, you can use Zipcar service to rent a car.

Montreal travel blog: Getting around Montreal

Montreal is a city with a fairly developed and convenient public transport system. The whole city has about 192 bus routes, 4 subway lines and 68 tram stations. With a such modern public transport system, you can reach to any place in the city. If you travel a lot, you should buy a day ticket (Pass) to be able to use all kinds of vehicles at cheap prices.

Tourists can buy a day ticket to be able to use all kinds of vehicles at a cheap price with a 1-day or 3-day ticket. Also, there are dedicated bike lanes in Montreal, so if you’re feeling a little adventurous, hop on a Bixi bike, a city public bike-sharing system, and explore the city in another perspective.

Since we were in Montreal for 3 days, we decided to use the Metro Pass (3-day pass for $18). Travel freely with Metro and bus. When buying tickets, remember to ask for a Metro map for easy travel.

Montreal blog: Where to go, what to do in Montreal

The city of Montreal owns a beautiful landscape, impressive small spaces, a peaceful atmosphere. When traveling to Montreal, visitors will admire many quaint, ancient architectures from the 17th and 19th centuries and also many corporate headquarters built in the early 20th century. In particular, the attractions around the city mostly serve free to the community.

Montreal has many interesting attractions for us to explore. One of the most famous attractions in Montreal is Habitat 67 Apartments which is also an strange inconic of the city, was designed by Moshe Safdie, an Israeli-Canadian architect. This is a very unique architectural complex made up of 354 architectural cubes made of reinforced concrete. The cubes are arranged on top of each other in a very special way. This is also considered one of the most unique architectural works in the city of Montreal.

Notre-Dame Basilica of Montreal

The next place to visit that you should not miss is the Notre Dame Basilica. This is a beautiful old cathedral built in the Gothic Revival architecture and English Gothic architecture styles with a height of 60 m. Coming here, you will surely be amazed and impressed by the intricate carvings on the ceiling of the church. The altar here has an extremely splendid orange-yellow color.

It is the first parish church in North America (construction started in 1647), the Cathedral is steeped in the history of Montreal. It had hosted major events such as the visit of Pope John Paul II in 1982 and the marriage of the Canadian famous singer Celine Dion in 1994.

This is a prominent site of Vieux-Montreal, designed by an Irish architect and built from 1824 – 1829. If you have the opportunity, go inside the Catholic church to admire the works of art and its interior design. It is revealed that the stars on the blue-green ceiling are made of 24-carat pure gold.

Saint Joseph’s Oratory of Mount Royal

The famous Catholic Church in Montreal which opened in 1904 with a height of 129 m and built in the architectural styles of Renaissance architecture, Italian Renaissance. The church not only attracting more than two million visitors to visit and pray every year, thousands of people of different religions from all over the world to pray because of the sacredness of “Brother Andre Jesuit” – who is the founder of the church.

Ville-Marie (The historical district of Old Montreal)

Don’t forget to enjoy the panoramic view of the city from the highest point: Mount Royal – where the name Montreal comes from. Montreal is also the filming location of many beloved American movies and TV series such as Catch Me If You Can, The Aviator, Lucky Number Slevin and The Notebook… Wandering around the Old Montreal, drop by shops, exploring some famous tourist spots, sipping a hot cup of coffee while watching people pass by is also a great experience.

Place Jacques Cartier

This is a lively, bustling public square, surrounded by the unique historic architecture of buildings, cafes, shops and restaurants. During the summer, the area will be closed to vehicles so that locals and tourists can walk freely. Place Jacques Cartier offers views of Montreal City Hall and the impressive Nelson’s Column, the city’s oldest structure.

Considered a tourist icon of the city of Montreal, Saint-Paul Street was established in the late 1600s. The street is less than 1 mile long and was once a bustling shopping district in the old town area of ​​Montreal.
