TripSavvy / Jhett Thompson

It's been years since I first heard about Cotopaxi's Allpa 35L travel pack. My running buddies loved it, as did my climbing friends and friends and family that were looking for a solid carry-on or car camping pack. But it was a particular friend—and fellow gear reviewer—who highly endorsed this pack that made me give it a serious look. He told me he'd been on a "somewhat obsessed" mission to find the best travel pack for his needs, and Cotopaxi's Allpa 35L was it.

So for the past six months, I've been testing this pack on road trips from California to Colorado and the Midwest, flights around the West Coast, including a wedding in Oregon, and fly fishing trips around the Western U.S. A team of editors also tested it in our New York City lab against 26 other highly-rated and recommended carry-on backpacks. And according to my experience—and our lab testing—this is the best travel pack you can currently buy.

Here's why.

Why Trust TripSavvy

Cotopaxi allpa 35l travel pack, it fits all your essentials for a week.

We should first say the 35L (35 liters) pack is the mid-size version of the Allpa, which also comes in sizes 28L and 42L. Cotopaxi says the 35L is ideal for weekend adventure trips but could also work for trips up to a week for the light or strategic packer. Our lab testers easily packed it with two pairs of pants, three shirts, one jacket, one pair of shoes, and a toiletry bag.

"The bag itself is great to pack because although it is fairly 'unstructured,' it has enough shape where you can easily tuck things into corners to fill it out," one tester reported. "I definitely had ample space for packing more stuff."

For the wedding in Oregon I traveled to, I had no problem fitting a pair of shoes, two laptops, a jacket, three pairs of pants, five shirts, and a Dopp kit.

The design is organized and thoughtful

While the capacity was definitely adequate—and even the heaviest of packers would likely find enough space for a weekend trip—the design is where this bag truly excels. Now in its second version, the latest Allpa line is lighter, more durable, and still packed with organizational and design features that have created a cult following. "I loved the organization solutions and design of this bag," one of our testers raved. "The zippers on the exterior allowed easy access into the bag's main compartment. The shape was perfect for fitting items of different shapes and densities. And I loved all the various pockets and access points."

Simply put, this pack has design features convenient for the modern traveler.

The outside of the pack has shoulder straps that can be tucked away behind the back padding and removable padded hip straps that can also tuck behind the same back padding. Grab handles on all four sides make it incredibly easy for snagging and tossing. And multiple attachment points allow for carrying additional items outside the pack with carabiners. The two exterior zippers are also clutch for grabbing items quickly (like a rain jacket) without fully opening the pack.

Inside, the pack has loads of organizational features. Our testers thought they were a bit unstructured but also smart and convenient. One side of the clamshell opening features two small and one mid-size pocket. I found the mid-size pocket particularly suitable for storing dirty running and hiking clothes and socks, while the smaller pockets are excellent for sunglasses, chargers, or other quick-grab items. The other side of the pack features a main compartment where I stashed most of my clothes and shoes. There's also a padded laptop sleeve for laptops up to 15 inches and a separate tablet sleeve. Simply put, this pack has design features convenient for the modern traveler.

It's lightweight and comfortable to carry

Our testers found this pack "super comfortable." Cotopaxi employs a low-profile harness system that helps distribute weight, including the aforementioned padded shoulder and hip straps and a sternum strap connecting the shoulder straps. The back padding is also super plush. "I was so pleased with how the straps contoured to the shape of my shoulders and chest," a tester reported. "The material used on the back of the pack is mesh, which boosts comfort." Bonus for Cotopaxi also decreasing the weight of the pack, which now weighs 3.5 pounds.

When someone asks me my recommendation for an ideal travel pack, this is the first I recommend. It simply checks all the boxes

This doubles as an excellent gear organizer for climbing, fly fishing, hiking, or other outings because of its comfort and adjustability. The lightness and organizational capabilities make it ideal for long approaches to the crag without getting your gear jumbled. I also found it helpful for longer days on the river when I needed to carry plenty of fly fishing gear, food, clothing, and, OK, fine, beer as well.

The material is high-quality and durable

Like the weight, Cotopaxi's rendition of the Allpa has amped durability. It features bomber TPU-coated 1000D polyester and 840D ballistic nylon paneling. (For all you non-gear heads, that's a very intense and strong material that's also often used for climbing crash pads and landing mats.) Our testers tossed the fully-packed bag around the testing lab and experienced no durability issues.

"Seems super durable to me with no visible damage after the throwing test," one tester said. "Also, the rubbery material on the exterior part of the bag seems like it would be resistant to a lot of types of damage, and it would stay relatively clean."

I've huffed my Allpa through brush, against rocks, and haven't been exactly gentle with it while tossing it in and out of trunks on road trips. I've also loaded it down with some weight. And so far, it doesn't show any damage.

The versatility justifies the higher price

At the time of publication, this pack is $200. "I think this is a great price for this bag," our lab testers concluded. "I could get so much use out of this bag. It is also very stylish and super comfortable."

This bag can also double as your car camping or road tripping pack. We also see it being ideal for van life storage. And it could also serve as a gear bag for climbing, kayaking, fishing, or other outdoor gear. Cotopaxi also offers a lifetime warranty and repairs and trade-in for gift cards.

This pack fits the many needs of various types of travelers and adventurers. When someone asks me my recommendation for an ideal travel pack, this is the first I recommend. It simply checks all the boxes, and if you're looking for a smaller or larger version, Cotopaxi has that in the 28L and 42L versions. But you don't have to be a frequent flyer, road-tripper, or traveler to benefit from this pack. Climbers could use it. Anglers could use it. Campers could use it. We even see it as ideal for the organized soccer parent taking snacks and extra clothes to the match or park. We also love that this pack comes with a rain cover.

Nathan Allen is TripSavvy's Outdoor Gear Editor. He grew up in the Midwest taking family road trips to the mountains. Stuffing a car full of various travel bags and packs is something he's done (or helped his parents do) nearly his entire life. He's traveled to five continents, taken vans and busses across East Africa and South America, and road tripped multiple times around the U.S. A notoriously horrible packer and organizer, Nathan appreciates that Cotopaxi's Allpa gives a little organizational and packing guide but still leaves it up to him. Besides the Allpa, his current go-to travel packs are Topo Design's Global Travel Bag 40L and Mystery Ranch's Mission Rover 45L.

In our lab, we tested the Cotopaxi Allpa alongside 26 other travel backpacks for capacity, design, comfort, durability, and value, giving each tested pack a rating on a five-point scale (one was the lowest and five was the highest). This backpack earned a perfect "5" score in each category, making it a standout among the bunch and confirming our real-world experience with it that this backpack is truly top of its class for travel backpacks.

This Is the Only Carry-On Bag I Use for Travel. Here’s Why

A backpack I picked up long ago on a whim has replaced nearly all of my travel luggage — and it’s still going strong.

For a long time, I had a problem: I was a serial bag buyer . Enrolling in school? New backpack . Going to Iceland for my honeymoon? New adjustable duffel bag . Flying to my parents’ place for a long weekend? New carry-on luggage . It seemed like every time I took a trip, I bought a new bag. But I never found one that I wanted to keep using after just a trip or two. It’s not that they were bad, per se; it’s just that they didn’t really impress enough to stick.

a collage of backpacks

Then, on one of my many bag-buying whims, I picked up the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack , and everything changed. Finally, I found a bag that I not only liked using the first few times, but I continued to use it for years. In fact, it became my go-to bag for pretty much all of my travels. It even encouraged me to pack smarter on longer trips so I wouldn’t need more than just this one bag. And all those other bags? I either gave them away, or they’re collecting dust in a closet somewhere. Here’s why Cotopaxi’s Allpa 35L Pack replaced all of my other luggage .

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Pack: What We Think

If you value speed, durability and (perhaps most importantly and significantly) versatility, this is a tough bag to beat. The internal compartments do away with the need for additional packing cubes and encourage organization. The weatherproof exterior makes this an ideal bag for ever-changing weather conditions. And its flexible soft construction and array of grab handles make putting it in overhead bins a simple and speedy prospect. If you’re a conscientious packer who values efficiency, you’ll be hard-pressed to find a better travel backpack.

That said, it’s not perfect and certainly isn’t for everyone. The soft sides make it risky to store things too delicate (especially if there’s a chance your bag will need to be checked), and the lack of an easily accessed external stash pocket (for things like your wallet, keys, small travel must-haves, etc.) are fairly big drawbacks. Furthermore, it lacks any kind of wheels, so you’ll have to haul it on your back or in your hands through the airport .

Integrated storage encourages organization

Most backpacks, even those designed for travel , have little, if any, real organization beyond a few unstructured zippered pouches in which to shove your belongings — at least in my experience. This backpack is a refreshing divergence. Not only does it have several compartments — including a padded laptop sleeve , an externally-accessed top pocket and a spacious clamshell-opening main storage area — but it also has zippered meshes of several sizes inside that main compartment, essentially replacing the need for packing cubes.

an open backpack

Furthermore, it boasts two sets of compression straps in the larger compartments, meaning you can pack even more stuff into the same amount of space as you might with a hard-sided bag. Along with that, there are also three smaller zippered pouches (and some hidden space beneath them) perfect for socks, underwear, toiletries and the like. Even for longer trips (my longest was a full calendar week), I’ve never struggled to get the bulk of my apparel — including an extra pair of shoes — into this bag.

The rugged exterior is perfect for different climates

A few months ago, I traveled from San Diego up to Santa Rosa for a work trip, and I used the Allpa 35L Pack as my sole travel bag. At the time, San Diego was sunny and hot, and Santa Rosa looked slightly chilly at worst. However, when I arrived, the weather had taken a turn, and it was raining in Santa Rosa. Because I chose this bag with its waterproof exterior panel, my apparel stayed dry while I waited out in the rain for my rideshare.

a person wearing a backpack

Note: the entire bag is not waterproof, just the external panel. However, the bag also comes with an included rain cover that’s easily stored in the bag when not in use. While the rain wasn’t severe enough to necessitate it, it was nice knowing I had a backup plan.

Obviously, a hard-shelled carry-on would offer similar protection, but you’d also have to drag it over the wet, puddled ground, and it is more of a hassle when navigating unfamiliar, crowded places, like through airports to outdoor pickup areas. The point is, whether you check the weather or not, this bag is great for keeping your gear protected while traveling between climates.

It makes air travel easier and less frustrating

“Carry-on standards” be damned, there have been plenty of times when I’ve had a bag well within the size limits seemingly not want to fit under the seat in front of me or into an overhead bin at all. In fact, that very issue, especially on fully booked flights, has led me to have to check my carry-on bags in the past.

a backpack on the floor

The Allpa 35L Pack, by contrast, is still within those size guidelines but is much easier to squeeze into tight spots because of its non-rigid construction. So long as you don’t stash delicate, breakable stuff in your carry-on, this bag is easy to squeeze into tight spots, including under the seat (as I discovered on a cross-country flight from San Diego to New York).

I wish it had a better external pouch

You know how most backpacks have that little external pocket on the lower front? This backpack doesn’t have one of those. While it makes the exterior look a lot sleeker, It does feel like a sacrifice not having that handy little stash pouch. I should clarify: there is a top-accessed pocket that serves a similar purpose, but it comes with a major drawback.

a person opening a laptop section of a backpack

That top pocket takes up the same internal room as the rest of the internal compartments. This means, unlike those little stitched-on pouches found on the likes of JanSport bags, you need to make sure you leave enough space to utilize this pocket. Most of the time, it works fine, but the minute you’re pushing the bag’s capacity to the limit, you’ll see just how difficult it is to keep this pocket functional. For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t trade the bag’s looks for that extra pocket, though. Typically, I just use a crossbody bag in tandem (my “personal” item, which is arguably more convenient since I usually stash my bag in the overhead bins anyway), and I’m none the wiser about the omission.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack: Alternatives

If you’d really prefer a bag with wheels you can drag behind you instead of haul on your shoulders, it’s hard to beat our pick for the best carry-on bag you can buy: the aptly named Away Carry-On . For an upgrade with a lot more padding and structure (but perhaps not more storage space), you can trust the Peak Design Travel Backpack 45L . And if you’re looking for something a lot more compact (or to go alongside your Allpa, as I mentioned), our favorite crossbody bag is the Moment Fanny Sling 2L .

Travel + Leisure / Pamela Jew

My job as a travel writer has taken me to all seven continents in the last 10 months, and after all those miles, let me tell you: There are just certain things I can’t travel without. The true MVP? My Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack , which has carried me through more than 50 countries — from Costa Rica to South Africa — and which I don’t expect to retire any time soon.

I’m in good company with my love of this backpack. After lots of testing, Travel + Leisure editors recently named the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack the best overall on its list of 2023’s best carry-on backpacks .

To buy: amazon.com and cotopaxi.com , $200

Still, I first heard about this bag years ago from a writer friend of mine who’d just returned from an assignment in Georgia (the country, not the state). While he had a lot to say about the destination, what he really raved about was the bag he lived out of for two weeks. It was carry-on compatible, had a 35-liter capacity, was lightweight and waterproof, and opened up like a suitcase for easy packing (impressive!). Plus, it had a waist strap so it’s easy on the back and, to top it all off, a rare lifetime warranty. I knew I just had to try it — so I got one. Of course, one quickly turned into two.

Travel + Leisure / Katie Jackson

I’m convinced this Cotopaxi bag is indestructible, because it’s made with high-quality, tear-resistant nylon fabric and a water-resistant TPU coating designed to withstand the relentless wear and tear of travel. And I know firsthand just how waterproof it can be. I was once carrying it in Costa Rica, during the rainy season, when I got caught in a downpour. Despite getting drenched, my bag’s contents stayed completely dry. And that was without using the rain cover it comes with! I’ve found this bag to be so waterproof that I don’t even bother bringing it.

To buy: amazon.com and cotopaxi.com , $200 For a bag made with such durable materials, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is quite light. It weighs less than four pounds, and because it has a waist belt and padded shoulder straps, weight is evenly distributed across my hips and shoulders. In September, I wore it in Portugal, where I stocked it up with bottles of wine. Despite how heavy my bag got, I never had any back pain. Even if you don’t want to wear it as a backpack, you can simply tuck the straps in and carry it using the side handles (reinforced, of course). I usually do this when I’m in Thailand, where it’s so hot and humid I don’t want to have anything on my back.

But by far, my favorite feature of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is the fact it opens like a suitcase. With traditional backpacks, I have to dig to the bottom of the bag to find what I’m looking for. But with this pack, I just unzip, open, and can see everything I packed. In addition to the large main compartment, there are so many internal pockets I almost don’t even need to use 2023’s best packing cubes .

There are even more functional features too, including a padded sleeve for a laptop or tablet and security YKK zippers to deter pickpockets (which I appreciated when I was in Paris last year, where I have had stuff stolen before). Finally, there’s a convenient external pocket that comes in handy for things like sunglasses and water that I want easy access to.

For such a functional bag, the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack is also very aesthetically pleasing. My next trip is to South Africa’s newest five-star luxury retreat, Future Found Sanctuary in Cape Town , and instead of rolling up with Louis Vuitton luggage, I’m proud to sport this pack because it’s actually pretty stylish. Both of my bags are two of the most eye-catching colorways — Cotopaxi is famous for its bright colors — but this bag is also available in solid black if you don’t want to be bothered by strangers giving you compliments on it. That said, it’s so cool that they’ll probably still ask where you got it.

To buy: amazon.com and cotopaxi.com , $200

At Cotopaxi.com , the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack starts at $200 and has an impressive 4.7-star average rating from more than 1,000 reviews. It also has a 4.7-star average rating at Amazon, where it starts at $198 and where shoppers call it the “best backpack for airline travel.” I’ve never had an issue getting it to fit in an overhead bin, including when I flew the discount airline Wizz Air this summer to Romania. It usually fits under the seat in front of me, too.

One shopper who calls it a great carry-on loved using it during a flight when traveling with their two young sons. “They need lots of snacks and toys and changes of clothes and other things,” they wrote. “This bag was able to fit all of it at once. Best of all, it kept all of our things very organized.” Another shopper who raves about how spacious it is managed to fit two pairs of pants, nine tops, a dress, pajamas, a pair of shoes, a bathing suit, socks, underwear and more, and still had space left!

To buy: amazon.com , $198

Despite being able to carry pretty much everything but the kitchen sink, this pack is still surprisingly comfortable. And unlike other carry-ons, because you can wear it, you can easily carry it with ease over cobblestone streets. One shopper who spent a week traveling around London and Paris during transportation strikes ended up having to walk everywhere and says they “never could have taken this trip without this pack.”

Even if your plans don’t involve walking a lot, you won’t be disappointed if you treat your back to the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack . This bag ensures you’ll arrive at your destination with all of the things you need, neatly organized. I’m not saying you should definitely buy two, like me, but I am saying it’s such a cool bag, I wouldn’t be surprised if it sells out.

At the time of publishing, the price started at $198.

Cotopaxi is the name of an active stratovolcano in the Andes Mountains, in Ecuador. It’s also the name of a company that manufactures outdoor gear and is trying to do some good in the world. We’ll let you guess which one this review is about.

Founded in 2014 as a Certified B-Corp, Cotopaxi donates 2% of their revenue to help alleviate poverty. They also partner with “organizations like International Rescue Committee, Educate Girls, and Proximity Designs to provide health, education, and livelihoods in developing countries.” They do great work and make great products, one of which is the Allpa 35L Travel Pack.

The Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack in Cuba

The Allpa is a 35-liter, carry-on compliant pack possessing many great features and design elements. Weighing 3lb 7oz (1560g) and measuring 20 x 12 x 8in (51 x 30 x 20cm), it’s on the heavier side of things compared to other bags with the same capacity—though it isn’t egregiously hefty. Much of the weight comes from the sturdy materials Cotopaxi chooses to use: TPU-coated 1000D polyester makes up the front of the pack while 1680D ballistic nylon comprises the side, top, and bottom paneling. This combination gives the Allpa a toughness that’s hard to beat. They also have a 28-liter pack available if you’re looking for something a bit smaller.

There are three configurations to choose from when purchasing this pack. There is no difference in the pack itself, just the accessories that come with it.

You have the option of buying:

  • The Allpa as a standalone bag.
  • The Allpa plus an accessory bundle that includes mesh laundry bags, a nylon shoe bag, and a snap-on mesh water bottle sleeve.
  • The Allpa plus accessories and also Cotopaxi’s Batac Daypack.

We chose the last option, although it’s not entirely necessary to get the full kit.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Details

While the pack is heavy, much of the burden is taken off your shoulders by a weight-distributing, low-profile harness system that Cotopaxi says they’ve taken from their hiking packs. This system consists of contoured shoulder straps, a padded, non-removable hip belt, a breathable airmesh back panel that does help keep the air moving (though you’ll still sweat a little), and an adjustable sternum strap that’s nice and sturdy. It’s very comfortable to carry and fits quite well for most people. We did find one issue with the functionality of the hip belt that may affect taller people, but more on that later.

Access to the interior of the bag and all its contents is easy and well thought out. The Allpa opens suitcase-style, thanks to a full-wrap zipper on the main compartment. Looking at the open bag, the right side consists of a sizable zippered mesh compartment and the left is subdivided into three zippered mesh compartments—one large compartment on the bottom and two smaller ones at the top.

Interior of the Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Travel Pack

If you need to access anything in the main compartment without opening the bag suitcase-style, you can do so via a shortcut zipper along the side. This is incredibly helpful if you need to go into a bathroom stall at an airport and grab some item of clothing for a quick change. You can hang the pack on the back of the door in a stall and access the contents through the side instead of laying it down on the floor (gross).

Cotopaxi Allpa Laptop Compartment

Back on the outside of the pack, there’s a nice-sized pocket on the top, which is ideal for small items like your passport, a notebook, or some packaged foods. It’s also subdivided inside for increased organization and has a key clip. The Allpa can house both a laptop and tablet, too. Opening up a zipper on the right side reveals padded laptop and tablet sleeves, with the former easily able to hold a 15” machine.

If you’re worried about theft of your laptop or any other valuables inside the pack, Cotopaxi has you covered with an interesting and minimal security measure. All external zippers on the Allpa feature theft-proof webbing sewn across the openings, which makes it difficult for someone to grab a zipper and easily unzip the pack in a clandestine way.

Rounding out the features are the slotted back panel, which houses the shoulder straps and hip belt, four reinforced grab handles on each side of the bag, and a high-visibility rain cover that’s easy dawn when needed. The cover doesn’t have a designated storage area like some other packs do, so you’ll have to just throw it inside the bag. If you want to tuck away the shoulder straps, all you need to do is tuck them into the slotted back panel. The hip belt, meanwhile, can be removed altogether. Those four grab handles are perfect when the bag is in this state, and they’re easy on the hands, too.

We’ve taken the Allpa on two international adventures as well as a couple of smaller weekend getaways and each time it’s performed with style. The pack isn’t too big nor too small, and we’ve never wished there was more room. The suitcase-style opening on the main compartment makes packing and unpacking a breeze. Here, too, the pack almost guides you on where to put your stuff:

  • Bigger items, like shoes, pants, and sweaters will have to go into the larger compartment on the right.
  • Smaller items like socks, underwear, and toiletries, to the left.
  • Even smaller items, like extra batteries, chargers, and pocket notebooks, in the two zippered pockets on top.

Cotopaxi Allpa Top Pocket

The top zippered pocket on the outside is well placed, easily accessible, and just the right size. It perfectly holds a medium-sized Magpul DAKA pouch and some smaller essentials, like sunglasses and case, pens, and a small bag of trail mix. Another plus is that even if the main compartment is almost completely full, this pocket it still usable. We can’t say it’s completely liter independent because we did notice that if you really jam-pack that main compartment this one will be ever so slightly affected.

Cotopaxi Allpa Easy-To-Grab Handles

We actually never brought a laptop or tablet with us on the trips where we’ve tested the Allpa, but the laptop and tablet compartment is versatile enough to hold other things, like a piece of artwork purchased while traveling or important printouts needed for your accommodations and activities at your destination. And having four sturdy, easy-to-grab handles may seem like overkill but it really isn’t. At one point, we had a taxi driver in Cuba pick the bag up out of the trunk of his car using the bottom handle. It wouldn’t have been so easy otherwise.

There aren’t many more positives to mention with the Allpa, and that isn’t a bad thing. This pack really is a no-nonsense, no frills item. It does what it should do, and it does it very well without any fuss.

There are a couple of issues we found while testing. The first only applies to people on the taller side with a large torso size of large. If you’re one of these people, the hip belt will be virtually useless to you. Since the pack isn’t very tall, the hip belt won’t be able to sit as it should (on top of your hips). Fortunately, you can just remove the hip belt entirely and at least save some weight.

Usage Timeline

Condition: Excellent

Good look and feel with great functionality. The only drawback is the rather useless hip belt, but you can at least remove it.

Two international trips to vastly different climates, as well as a few shorter and closer jaunts, and the bag is still as good as its first day.

Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Review Perfect for the Budding World Traveler

Founded in 2014, Cotopaxi was one of first startups ever to launch as a Benefit Corporation , a status that trades legal and financial protections in return for commitments to work toward the general public good. At least two percent of Cotopaxi's annual revenue is donated to a specific cause, like organizations which promote education in India, or donating mosquito netting in Africa.

But there I go—it's so easy to talk about Cotopaxi's charitable giving, rather than the functionality of their gear. And as attractive as Cotopaxi’s philanthropic mission is, it’s not the reason why friends stop me to ask about their packs. Both bags in the Allpa 35L Travel Pack bundle are as brightly-colored and irresistible as gumdrops in a jar, and—more importantly—they are light and packed (ha!) full of features.

I’ve taken the Allpa on two weekend trips and both times, I’ve mentally kicked myself. If only a bag like this had been available before, I could have saved myself a lot of trouble. This is the bag that a younger me would have killed for.

The Allpa 35L combines pertinent features from every single kind of bag. Like a camping backpack, it has a sternum strap, a waist belt, and a dash of webbing for attaching a carabiner or two. It also has a mesh back panel, and comes with a brightly-colored rain cover.

Image may contain Backpack and Bag

Like a sturdy duffel, it’s soft and frameless. It has four reinforced grab handles (one on each side), and a waterproof, polyurethane-laminated, 1000-dernier polyester exterior for flinging it casually onto disgusting floors. A side zipper allows you to grab things out of the main compartment without opening the entire bag. Each of the bag’s zippers has a little security loop to keep people from opening it without you noticing.

Like a suitcase, it has a full zip around the middle, so you can splay it open like you’re making a sandwich. Compression straps in the main compartment help cinch your puffy belongings down. And like a daypack, it has a padded laptop compartment in the back, and organizational pockets on one side of the interior compartment and in a small front pocket.

If you buy the complete bundle, it comes with a nylon shoe bag, mesh laundry bags, and a mesh water bottle sleeve that you can clip onto the carabiner loops. It also comes with a stowable 16-liter Batac del Dia backpack . The whole kit is designed to fit in the carry-on compartment of most airplanes.

At first, I didn't see the point in creating such a Frankenstein of a bag. What was so wrong with carry-on suitcases and duffel bags in the first place? I like my rolling suitcase; the hard shell keeps dresses and shirts relatively wrinkle-free, and protects fragile items. And unlike a duffel, I wouldn’t be able to use the Allpa as a gear bag, since the space is divided into so many different compartments. All those tiny pockets are useless if you already have a decent toiletries bag and a cord organizer .

But when I took the bag on two quick weekend trips, I started to understand. For most casual trips--the kind that most of us make to see our parents, or to go out of town for a friend's birthday party—you don't need a suitcase, duffel, or a hiking backpack. The Allpa fits squarely into a category that I call "good enough gear." It's not specialized, but it's perfect for the way that most people really work and live.

Which, if I'm to go by my own experience, is to throw several shirts and your laptop in a bag, toss it in the trunk two hours after you told everyone you were going to leave, and go.

$200 isn’t cheap, but it isn’t expensive either, when you see how much comes with this bundle. In addition to an assortment of mesh and nylon bags, it also includes the aforementioned Batac del Dia backpack . When the Allpa is fully packed, the Batac fits neatly into the front pocket. It’s a colorful, lightweight, nylon daypack that has become my favorite go-to, all-around bag. Even if you’re content with your current rolling suitcase or duffel, you should probably get one of these.

Even if you can fit everything you need into one backpack, you still need to carry something around for your day about town. Many camping backpacks have detachable daypacks, which is just a little too Kuato from Total Recall for my liking. Instead, I like packing a lightweight collapsible bag , but finding one that isn’t just a nylon sack is a little difficult.

The Batac del Dia has plenty of pockets for a packable daypack. The interior has a hanging mesh pocket and a large envelope pocket; the front zip has a sideways mesh pocket sewn into the pocket, so you can slide your hand into the pocket sideways to extract hotel room keys or a passport. The straps have an adjustable sternum strap that slides on a rail system, two side water bottle pockets, and a strip of webbing that is handy for clipping on my climbing shoes.

It’s light enough to hang on a hook by the front door, easy to find amidst a swirl of dog leashes, unicorn hoodies and jackets, and just big enough for my essentials pouch and whatever else I need for the day’s outing-- a diaper changing station , or a pair of running shoes , or just some milk bottles and library books to return.

Cotopaxi's "more is more" mentality toward the Allpa pack is a little much. The accessories were overkill. Even if I needed it, putting a separate rain cover on top of an already waterproof outer panel gives me hives. I quickly lost track of which mesh or nylon bag was supposed to carry what. The full center zip on a floppy bag is annoying if you're in a hurry. And then, it's all too easy for your lumpily-packed items to jam the zipper when you're putting it all back together.

But the bag was astonishingly comfortable. It fits on my short torso, and the straps are actually contoured to fit my narrow shoulders—a rarity when it comes to so-called "unisex" packs.

For someone like me, who travels mostly out of obligation rather than pleasure, the Allpa would be nice to have but not a necessity. It did make me nostalgic for my early twenties again—walking around aimlessly, looking for a cheap hostel, taking a road trip to a friend of a friend's birthday party in LA on a whim, or buying plane tickets to Cleveland just because they were only $50.

I don't travel like that anymore (and, admittedly, I probably found it a lot less fun at the time), but the Allpa 35L bundle would have been perfect. Buy one now and save it for the high school or college seniors in your life. It is the perfect graduation gift for the budding world traveler.

Measuring Tips

Use a flexible tape measure, and if possible, have someone help you take measurements.

Wear something light and close-fitting—like leggings and a t-shirt—so your clothes don’t add to the measurements. Don’t wear anything thick or heavy, like jeans or a jacket.

Stand up straight with your feet shoulder-width apart.

With the tape measure parallel to the floor, measure the circumference around the fullest part of your chest.

With the tape measure parallel to the floor, measure the full circumference of your natural waist (at the crease when you bend to one side).

With the tape measure parallel to the ground, measure the circumference of the fullest part of your hips (usually around the top of your thighs, where they connect to your torso).

Starting at the base of your neck, measure along your shoulder, then down to the wrist. Your elbow should be slightly bent.

Holding the tape measure vertically, measure straight down from your crotch to the floor. Take this measurement without shoes on.

The 9 Best Carry-on Backpacks

N ot sure whether to take a rolling suitcase or a travel backpack on the plane? Both types of carry-on luggage certainly have their merits, but if you like keeping your arms and hands free when traveling, a backpack is the right choice for you. Furthermore, compared to a hard-sided suitcase , it's easier to squeeze a malleable backpack into an overhead bin or under the seat. And if your vacation is focused on adventure travel, you might value a durable pack on your back over wheels on the ground.

U.S. News compiled this list from extensive research along with consumer reviews. Whatever your reason for choosing a backpack, there are plenty on the market to satisfy your needs. Read on for the best carry-on travel backpacks.

Other things to know: Might not be necessary if you already have a pruners and saw. This 28-inch version is good for bigger and harder-to-reach branches.

Garmin Forerunner 255S Music GPS Running Watch — Runner-Up Amazon deal price: $300 ; street price: $380

What we like: Our runner-up pick for the best GPS running watch if listening to music is important for your workouts. Still one of the most feature-packed, top-performing GPS running watches we’ve tested. Includes music streaming and storage capabilities.

Other things to know: Accurate distance and route tracking. Solid heart-rate monitoring. Multiband GPS. Decent battery life, about 14 days. Lacks touchscreen. Much shorter battery life than our top pick. In tracking road runs, it’s not quite as accurate as our top pick. One-year warranty.

Cricut Explore 3 Electronic Cutting Machine — Top Pick Amazon deal price: $228 ; street price: $300

What we like: Our top for the best electronic cutting machine. Intuitive and easy-to-use software is great for beginners. Superior selection of images and ready-to-make projects.

Other things to know: Faster than other cutting machines but significantly louder. Doesn’t come with a cutting mat and can only cut materials that are 6 inches or longer. Only the second deal we’ve posted on the Explore 3 so far. After another drop, now down to the lowest price we've seen to date.

Read our review of the best electronic cutting machines .

Brother P-Touch Cube Label Maker — Budget Pick Amazon deal price: $45 ; street price: $60

What we like: Our budget pick for the best label maker. Easy to use. Good for occasional label making. Produces the same high-quality labels and uses the same great design suite as our top pick.

Other things to know: A stripped-down version of our top pick. Lacks automatic cutter and built-in rechargeable battery. Recurring deal price, but rarely drops lower.

Read our review of the best label makers .

Aura Carver Mat Digital Photo Frame — Pick Variant Amazon deal price: $143 in select colors ; street price: $180

What we like: A variant of our top digital photo frame pick. Offers easy setup, vivid display, pleasing design, and near-zero pillarboxing. Loading photos and videos remotely is a breeze. Features two frame layers that give the look of a mat picture frame.

Other things to know: The 16:10 aspect ratio isn’t our preferred 4:3. Free Aura app works with iOS and Android phones. Available in black or clay color with white mat.

Read our review of the best digital photo frame .

Smartish Gripmunk with MagSafe for iPhone 15 Case — Our Pick Amazon deal price: $16 in select colors ; street price: $20

What we like: Our pick for the best basic phone case for the iPhone 15. A one-piece case made of soft, rubber-like plastic (TPU, or thermoplastic polyurethane), and provides more than adequate coverage and protection. Easy to install but won't stretch out. Affordable but doesn’t feel cheap.

Other things to know: Has been our pick for the best basic iPhone case for years now and continues to maintain that spot, but is a plain case with not much going on. Select colors on sale. The iPhone 15 Plus, Pro, and Pro Max versions are also on sale in a few colors.

The best round sunglasses, the Sungait Vintage Round, shown on an orange background.

Sungait Vintage Round Sunglasses (Polarized Lenses, 2-Pack) — Our Pick Amazon deal price: $15 for a 2-pack select colors with clipped on-page coupon ; street price: $18

What we like: Our cheap round sunglasses pick. Also recommended in gift guides and outdoor guides. Comfortable and sturdy. Complements a variety of face shapes. Keyhole nose bridge. Mini screwdriver provided with purchase. Logo-free and unisex.

Lunya Washable Silk Tulip Back Set — Gift Pick Lunya deal price: $150 with code FOR-WCSLEEP ; street price: $188

What we like: A slinky silk pajama set we recommend in our guide to the best gifts for girlfriends (that are great for anyone). An everyday indulgence. Can be hand- or machine-washed, unlike many silk pajamas. Cut of top (with its criss-crossed back) is flattering on many different body types.

Other things to know: 100% Mulberry silk. More playful silhouette than some of our pajama picks. Abbreviated crop top exposes some midriff. Available in a variety of colors and sizes. Use code FOR-WCSLEEP .

Read our review of the best gifts for girlfriends .

A.L.C. Renzo Pleated Midi Dress — Our Pick Bloomingdale's deal price: $446 ; street price: $595

What we like: Our pick for the ultimate little black cocktail dress. Delicate pleats, a high neck, and exposed shoulders make this a refined choice for an evening out. Breathable polyester felt softer and more luxurious than many silk dresses we tested.

Other things to know: The priciest dress we recommend, but worth the investment. Designed to hit midcalf, but may hit closer to ankle level if under 5-foot-5. Sold in sizes 00 to 14.

Read our review of the best little black dresses .

Paige Cindy Jeans — Top Pick Paige deal price: $164 with code PAIGEFAMILY24 ; street price: $219

What we like: Our decadently soft and stretchy women's jeans pick. Straight-leg, high-rise style, fitted through the waist and hips. Body-conscious yet totally lounge-able. Testers of different sizes and shapes found these jeans flattering and wildly comfortable.

Other things to know: Stretchier denim tends to (you guessed it) stretch out over time. 28-inch inseam may be too short for some. Destroyed hem isn't for everyone. Run slightly large; we recommend sizing down if between sizes. Use code PAIGEFAMILY2024 . Doesn't quite compare to deals we saw over Black Friday, but still a good value.

Read our review of the best women's jeans .

Nike Blazer Mid '77 Vintage Sneakers (Men's) — Staff Favorite Nike deal price: $72 in select colors with code SPRING, free Nike membership required ; street price: $105

What we like: A staff favorite alternative to Nike Air Force 1s. Versatile mid-height sneakers with a vintage feel. Sleek, leather upper with suede details. Solid rubber sole provides strong foot support and traction.

Other things to know: Free Nike membership required to use coupon code SPRING and for free shipping. Several colors are on sale, but the tan option offers a wide range of sizes for a neutral color.

Read our ode to the Nike Blazer Mid '77 Vintage Sneakers .

Crocs Dylan Clog — Gift Pick Amazon deal price: $33 in select colors ; street price: $55

What we like: A more sophisticated pair of Crocs we recommend in several of our gift guides. Belies the brand's ugly reputation. Textured to look like full-grain leather. Clean profile with a notably unperforated toe box.

Other things to know: Easy to wash thanks to proprietary resin construction. On sale in select colors in women's and men's sizes. New low.

Read our review of the best gifts for boyfriends (that are great for anyone) .

Bonobos Soft Everyday Tee (pack of two) — Our Pick Bonobos deal price: $50 when you add two to cart ; street price: $70

What we like: Our boxier, more relaxed white T-shirt pick. Extremely soft with some stretch and sturdily constructed. Especially loved by our plus-size testers for quality, fit, and comfort. 100% cotton.

Other things to know: Generous fit may not work for people with smaller frames. Available in a variety of colors and sizes. Choose between crew neck or V-neck and slim or standard cut. Add two to your cart to get the deal price.

Read our review of the best men’s white T-shirts .

What we like: A casual leather boot loved by Wirecutter staff and many others around the world. Pull-on, ankle-high, with an elastic panel. Comfortable, durable rubber sole. Uppers made of extra-thick leather. Ergonomically engineered to reduce fatigue. They can last for years with daily wear.

Etsfmoa Unisex Beanie with Light — Gift Pick Amazon deal price: $13 in select colors ; street price: $15

What we like: A combination beanie and headlamp recommended in multiple Wirecutter gift guides. A bright, rechargeable light embedded in a soft, warm hat. Light charges in about two hours via USB port and has three brightness settings. Beanie comes in 24 different colors and patterns.

Other things to know: Great for walking the dog after dark or staying hands-free during house projects (also makes a good Father’s Day gift). The black and gray hats, the typical colors we see on sale, are both down to $13.

Read our review of the best gifts under $25 .

Idegg No Show Socks (Unisex, Six Pairs) — Our Pick Amazon deal price: $12 for a 6-pack in select colors and sizes ; street price: $15

What we like: Our thin and inexpensive no-show socks pick. Made from a lightweight and breathable cotton blend. Terrific value, especially when on sale. Great for wearing with snug-fitting shoes. Won’t slip or bunch.

Other things to know: Thin material doesn’t provide much padding or support. Not as soft and smooth as our other no-show sock picks. Deal is for a medium six-pack combination of black, gray, and whites (add $1 for large).

Read our review of the best no-show socks .

A Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt installed to a door and set to lock.

Schlage Encode Smart WiFi Deadbolt (Century Trim) — Top Pick Amazon deal price: $183 ; street price: $230

What we like: Our top pick for the best smart deadbolt lock. A low-profile, no-fuss lock with a foolproof keypad and the ability to connect to Wi-Fi without requiring a plug-in adapter. Particularly easy to install, and using it is intuitive. Battery life has been excellent, lasting six months or more at a time.

Other things to know: Compatible with Amazon Alexa and Google Home, but not Apple Home. Relatively loud and slow, which sometimes leads to accidental lock jams when people open the door while it’s still retracting the bolt. The Schlage app is not great. Deal for the century trim in the satin nickel finish. Clip the on-page coupon.

Shark Flexstyle Multipurpose Styling Tool — Staff Favorite Deal price: $250 ; street price: $300

What we like: Our choice as the best-buy multipurpose hairstyling tool. Offers the power of a traditional hair dryer and deal includes your choice of three accessories. Overall better value than the popular Dyson Airwrap.

Other things to know: Does not come with a storage box, but accessory options include one. Base can twist 90 degrees. Only the second deal we've seen so far.

Read Shark Flexstyle or Dyson Airwrap: Which styling tool is for you? .

Dyson Supersonic Hair Dryer (Refurbished) — Upgrade Pick Woot deal price: $207 with code MARCHTHREE24 ; street price: $300

What we like: Our longtime upgrade hair dryer pick. Unique design makes for an extraordinarily pleasant user experience. No vibration whatsoever. Simple-to-switch magnetic attachments make styling a breeze. Consistently our favorite hair dryer to use since we first tested it in 2016.

Other things to know: Pricey, and doesn’t make your hair look any different than cheaper options. Available in the select finishes. Manufacturer refurbished. One-year Dyson warranty. Single-use code MARCHTHREE24 . Free shipping for Amazon Prime members. Only available in the nickel/copper finish.

Crest 3D Whitestrips Professional Effects Kit (22 Treatments) — Staff Favorite Amazon deal price: $30 ; street price: $46

What we like: An at-home teeth-whitening solution that is a staff favorite. Low-tech, effective, and very affordable. No dentist visits required. Comes with 10 days' worth of Professional Effects treatments and two 1-Hour Express treatments.

Other things to know: Slower than professional treatments—results take several sessions over the course of a few weeks. Not as good as the typical Costco Crest 3D Whitestrips deals we see, but a good discount for those without a Costco membership.

Read our ode to Crest 3D Whitestrips .

Yamazaki Home Tower Shoe Rack — Upgrade Pick Amazon deal price: $94 in select colors ; street price: $115

What we like: The investment-worthy upgrade pick from our guide to the best shoe racks. Slim enough to fit in a closet, but sleek enough for an entryway. Stores up to 24 pairs of shoes. Steel and wood veneer. Top could double as an entryway shelf. Two hooks on the side for keys or an umbrella.

Other things to know: The rack assembles quickly but will require using a screwdriver. Only holds adult-sized shoes; tiny shoes will tumble through. Only on sale in white.

Read our review of the best shoe rack .

Sabai The Essential Sofa — Our Pick Sabai deal price: $1,408 shipped ; street price: $1,640

What we like: Our favorite eco-friendly three-seater sofa pick. Cushions remain plump and unworn after years of use. Available in multiple configurations, fabrics, and colors. Many components are replaceable and recyclable.

Other things to know: Low back and shallow seating may not be the comfiest for lounging. Deal price reflects sample configuration with included shipping cost. The Essential Sofa is made to order and ships within two to four weeks.

Apotheke Charcoal Candle — Our Pick Bloomingdale's deal price: $33 in cart ; street price: $44

What we like: Our elegant, monochromatic pick for a warm and woodsy scented candle. Notes of charred sandalwood and cedar after a heavy rain. Fragrant but not heavy or overpowering. Sleek matte-black vessel is as stylish as it is adept at hiding soot streaks, fingerprints, and other smudges.

Other things to know: About 70-hour burn time. We wish it came with a lid or dust cover. Jar is reusable, but the company name is printed on the glass, so it’s impossible to remove. Price reflects in cart. We've seen better deals for the 3-wick size, but this is a solid deal for this size.

Lutron Caséta Wireless In-Wall Smart Dimmer Switch (2-Count Kit) — Another Good Option Amazon deal price: $136 ; street price: $170

What we like: A good smart light dimmer switch if you don’t have great Wi-Fi. Easy-to-use keypad for dimming and powering lights manually. Easy to install. Works reliably with many smart-home devices. A pick when we started this guide, and we will continue to sing its praises.

Other things to know: Includes two switches, required Lutron Caséta Smart Bridge, and two wireless remotes. Uses ClearConnect wireless. Neutral wire required (which may be an issue in homes with old wiring).

Revival Rugs - 25% Off Jute Area Rugs — Our Pick Revival deal price: $219 with code WCJUTE25 ; street price: $290

What we like: Our pick for a natural-fiber rug that comes in several colors. Flexible and finely woven, giving it a more delicate, flat appearance. Feels soft underfoot and barely sheds. Easy to vacuum and lightweight enough to shake out outside.

Other things to know: Best for dining rooms, kitchens, hallways, or layering in living rooms or bedrooms. Spot-clean only, as jute is very susceptible to water and humidity. Use code WCJUTE25 to save 25% on all jute rugs. Deal price is for the 5-by-8-foot size, but pricing varies depending on total cost; no minimum spend.

Waterpik Aquarius Water Flosser — Runner-Up Amazon deal price: $58 ; street price: $80

What we like: Our runner-up pick for the best water flosser is just as effective as our top pick and comes with a similar three-year warranty. Easy to use and clean. Ten pressure settings, including a “massage” setting that emits pulses of water.

Other things to know: This is a corded model and requires a power outlet during use. Takes up more counter space than our top pick. Recurring deal price; $10 more than the deal we saw during Cyber Week.

Amazon Basics 8-Sheet High-Security Micro-Cut Shredder with Pullout Basket — Top Pick Amazon deal price: $62 ; street price: $69

What we like: Our top pick for the best paper shredder. This high-security shredder offers the best balance of ease of use, sheet capacity, and price. It can run jam-free for nearly 10 minutes without overheating. Micro-cuts documents and has a separate CD/DVD shredding slot.

Other things to know: Slightly bigger than eight-sheet shredders with lift-up tops. The overload LED indicator didn't work like we expected it would. We recommend unplugging any shredder when not in use.

PetKit Eversweet Solo 2 Water Fountain — Upcoming Pick Amazon deal price: $40 ; street price: $50

What we like: An upcoming pick in our pet water fountain guide. Only five main parts to keep track of. The easiest fountain to take apart and clean in testing. Nearly silent wireless pump has a convenient auto shut-off feature, so it doesn’t burn out when the water level gets too low.

Other things to know: Also comes with a companion app, which lets you set up cleaning and refill reminders, but it has a limited feature set.

PetFusion Jumbo Cat Scratcher Lounge — Upgrade Pick Amazon deal price: $68 ; street price: $80

What we like: Our pick for the best cat bed for multicat households, this doubles as a scratcher, too. Both the largest bed we tested and the nicest scratcher we found. Big enough to sleep four cats comfortably. You can flip it over and use the underside when the top side shows wear and tear, prolonging its lifespan.

Other things to know: Large, about 39 by 14 inches. Cardboard may be too densely packed for some cats to comfortably scratch.

Moscow Metro

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.

Global Uprising, PBC dba Cotopaxi ("Cotopaxi") distributes 100% of the monetary donations that it receives from its customers to the Cotopaxi Foundation on a monthly basis.

What is the Cotopaxi Foundation?

The Cotopaxi Foundation is a Utah-based private 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Giving is core to the Cotopaxi model. The foundation is the next step in terms of doing more good. 1% of our annual revenue goes to the Cotopaxi Foundation, which aims to boost our grantmaking, democratize our impact, and help us make a bigger difference in the communities we touch.

Every time you purchase one of our products, you’re contributing to the Cotopaxi Foundation. But we encourage you to be part of Doing Good by giving directly to the foundation. However you support our efforts, your contribution is making a difference.

We are not able to provide tax deductible receipts for our customers at this time. Cotopaxi is exploring how to modify this process in the future, and will post updates here on our website.

  2. The Best From Our Tests: A Review of Cotopaxi's Allpa 35L Travel Backpack

The material is high-quality and durable. Like the weight, Cotopaxi's rendition of the Allpa has amped durability. It features bomber TPU-coated 1000D polyester and 840D ballistic nylon paneling. (For all you non-gear heads, that's a very intense and strong material that's also often used for climbing crash pads and landing mats.)

  3. This Is the Only Carry-On Bag I Use for Travel. Here's Why

While it offers 35L of internal storage, the bag doesn't feel too big or cumbersome, and it doesn't sag awkwardly when not filled to the brim. Sean Tirman. The Allpa 35L Pack, by contrast, is still within those size guidelines but is much easier to squeeze into tight spots because of its non-rigid construction.

  4. Cotopaxi Allpa 35L Review

The Cotopaxi was the only bag in our travel backpack review to include a rain cover. To be consistent in our testing, we didn't use it during our high-pressure hose test. Weighing 3lb 7oz (1560g) and measuring 20 x 12 x 8in (51 x 30 x 20cm), it's on the heavier side of things compared to other bags with the same capacity—though it isn't egregiously hefty.
