Four guilty of oliver freckleton's death.

A 19-year-old man has been convicted of the murder of a young father who was fatally stabbed the day before his 20th birthday. Chardon Carnagie of Grampian Way, Derby was convicted of the murder of Oliver Freckleton at Stafford Crown Court  today (21 March 2023) following a trial that lasted over two months.

Mykel Paddifoot, 18, of Thackery Street, Derby and a girl, aged 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons, were convicted of manslaughter.

A fourth defendant, 21-year-old Travel Reid of Sinfin Lane, Derby pleaded guilty to manslaughter at the end of the trial.

Oliver Freckleton suffered a fatal stab wound in the leg at a house party in Burton-on-Trent on 11 December 2021.

He had attended a friend’s 17th birthday party and was stabbed as he tried to stop a fight between the defendants and another friend.

The court heard that during the party, the 17-year-old defendant had invited her boyfriend and his friends to the party for the sole purpose of attacking her ex-boyfriend who was Mr Freckleton’s friend because she was unhappy with his presence.

The defendants disguised themselves with masks and balaclavas and some had taken weapons including knives.

When a fight started outside the house, Mr Freckleton stepped in to assist his friend and he was stabbed in the leg.

Sadly, he died on the driveway at the house party protecting his friend while the defendants drove away in three cars.

When they were arrested, the defendants denied any involvement in Mr Freckleton’s death. However, witness testimony, CCTV footage, mobile phone and scientific evidence played a key role in proving the case.

Witnesses evidence proved that the female knew that Chardon Carnagie carried a knife when she invited him and his friends to the party to attack Mr Freckleton’s friend.

Oliver Freckleton’s blood was found on a footmat in the rear of one of the getaway cars. A pair of shorts stained with his blood were recovered from Chardon Carnagie who had attempted to evade his crime by asking his father to wash his belt and jeans. A dress recovered from the 17-year-old girl’s home was also stained with his blood.

Careful analysis of phone evidence and CCTV showed how the defendants had planned part of their attack including agreeing to take weapons over SnapChat. Phone and mobile data evidence along with the CCTV also mapped the journey of their cars to the scene and showed the jury the crucial calls made just before and after the stabbing which proved that they planned this irrational attack.

Kate Seal of the CPS said: “This is another senseless loss of a young life to knife crime and I welcome the jury’s verdicts of guilty.  Oliver Freckleton should have been safe at his friend’s party and because of the defendant’s actions, his life was tragically cut short as he selflessly tried to protect his friend. I hope the verdicts serve as a warning to anyone who believes it is acceptable to carry knives and weapons. Oliver’s family are devastated at their loss and my thoughts remain with them and his young daughter who will grow up without her father.”

•    The CPS charged nine defendants in total for this crime. While three have been convicted and one has pleaded guilty, the others have been acquitted by the court. We respect the jury’s decision.

Murder trial hears stabbed dad's plea to pal to look after his child

Nine people left a young dad "bleeding to death" and to die in the arms of his friend after he was stabbed in the leg at a party in Burton, a court has heard. Oliver Freckleton told his friend to look after his young child as he lay dying, a jury has been told.

Paramedics spent 45 minutes trying to save 19-year-old Mr Freckleton but he had suffered cardiac arrest after the stab wound severed two major arteries. Nine people are now standing trial at Stafford Crown Court accused of his murder at a house party in Bridgeside, Stretton , in the early hours of December 11, 2021.

The defendants are 19-year-old Isaiah Hall, of Rose Hill Street, Derby; Adam Viola, aged 20, of Uppermoor Road, Allenton, Derby; Chardon Carlington Carnagie , 19, of Grampian Way, Derby; Travel Reid, 21, of Sinfin Lane, Derby; Joel Lubangi, 18, of Osmaston Road, Derby; and Mykel Elrol Paddifoot, 18, of Thackery Street, Derby. They are all charged with one count of murder, which they have pleaded not guilty to.

Two 17-year-old boys and a 17-year-old girl, who cannot be identified for legal reasons, are also standing trial accused of murder. They have also pleaded not guilty to the charge.

Michael Burrows KC, prosecuting, told the jury, the 17-year-old female defendant had complained to Carnagie, claiming her ex-boyfriend was trying to touch her while at the party. This led to Carnagie "recruiting" his co-defendants in Derby and travelling to the party to confront him, it is alleged. There was a commotion outside the house and Mr Freckleton - who had gone outside to investigate what was happening - was stabbed, he said.

It is claimed the eight "Derby lads", as they were referred to by witnesses, arrived in three separate cars. One witness at the party told police he heard the 17-year-old girl complain her ex-boyfriend was touching her against her will and she had asked Carnegie to come down and "he carries", the witness said. The court was told this meant Carnegie had a knife on him.

A text sent by Paddifoot to another co-defendant said they were to "ching man up" which the court heard meant to either to go for a fight or to bring a knife. Mr Burrows KC told the jury: "The prosecution say they came to the party with a knife and Carnegie produced a knife, which he used with lethal effect."

Three cars, an Astra with false number plates, a Nissan Juke and a Vauxhall Insignia were seen on CCTV gathering in Derby which, the prosecution claims, was the group "assembling". The cars started arriving at the party at 1.20am. Just 12 minutes later, at 1.32am, the 999 call was made after Mr Freckleton had been fatally stabbed, the jury heard.

Of the girl who was holding the house party, Mr Burrows told the court: "She saw Carnegie swing to punch [one of the witnesses] who dodged it. She then saw [Carnegie] hold something silver and shiny. She didn't see him use the knife."

Mr Burrows told the court the man Carnegie tried to punch was the ex-boyfriend who was also slashed twice to the leg. One of the defendants, who had a mask on, was seen pointing "something silver" at the ex-boyfriend, with the court told it was a handgun. The ex-boyfriend later told police the defendants arrived at the party wearing masks and "all seemed good". However, when he walked outside he saw Carnegie had a knife and he started slashing at his leg. The ex-boyfriend ran to the back garden, the court heard.

Oliver Freckleton, pictured with his father Rob, died from a single stab wound

At this point Mr Freckleton and his best friend, who were inside the house, heard the commotion outside and went to investigate. The best friend said one masked person pointed a handgun at him and another of the "Derby lads" was seen holding a knife by his side. He said Mr Freckleton was not holding a weapon, the jury was told.

Mr Burrows said: "He saw Mr Freckleton drop to the ground. He was a big lad. He said it would have to be a big punch to put him to the floor and that is why he thought something worse had happened." The court heard Mr Freckleton weighed 18 stone and was 6ft 1ins.

It was at this point Mr Freckleton was stabbed in the leg, the prosecution alleges. The friend tried to use his clothes to apply pressure to Mr Freckleton's wound. Mr Burrows said at this point: "Mr Freckleton told him to look after his child."

A post-mortem examination found the stab wound to Mr Freckleton's left leg was 14cm deep and had cut two major blood vessels leading to rapid blood loss. Mr Burrows said: "The defendants were at the party for just minutes. With 10 or 11 minutes they left having attacked two men. They left Mr Freckleton bleeding to death on the ground outside. They left him to die and left the scene together."

The defendants were all arrested between December 11 and December 20 and none of them have admitted having a weapon or stabbing Mr Freckleton, the court was told.

Accounts of what happened from the defendants were read out in court. Carnegie said he saw one of the witnesses about to punch one of the "Derby lads" so he punched them "for his own safety".

A knife was later found in a handbag in the Nissan. Mr Freckleton's blood was found on Carnegie's shorts and airborne droplets of his blood were found on the 17-year-old girl's dress, the court heard. His blood was also found on the mat in the rear of the Astra. One of the 17-year-old boys was the only one sitting in the rear, the jury was told.

The court also heard Carnegie told his father to wash his belt and jeans, with the prosecution alleging, Carnegie was concerned that they might be stained with blood, Mr Burrows alleged. Carnegie had also got a message to the 17-year-old girl which said: 'Make sure your thing matches with mine', the jury was told.

Mr Burrows told the jury: "They went looking for trouble. It is why Carnegie recruited Paddifoot. It is why Paddifoot sent messages to his friends. It is why they were wearing hoods and balaclavas and why they only stayed for a few minutes having knocked them [Mr Freckleton and the his friend] down like bowling pins."

The trial continues.

Four people jailed for 'callous' killing of 'kind, new dad' at Burton house party

  • Staffordshire Police
  • Tuesday 6 June 2023 at 1:16pm

WARNING: Some people may find the video distressing.

Three men and a woman from Derby have been jailed after a "kind, new dad" was fatally stabbed at a house party in Burton.

Oliver Freckleton, 19, was at a birthday party on Bridgeside in Stretton on Friday 10 December 2021.

Shortly after 1.30am the next morning, he was stabbed in his left thigh outside the front door.

The knife cut two major blood vessels, the femoral artery and the femoral vein. A woman who called 999 said she thought he had been shot because of the amount of blood loss. He sadly died at the scene at 2.52am.

Chardon Carlington Carnagie, 19, was jailed for 22 years after he was found guilty of murder by a jury.

Mykel Elrol Paddifoot, 18, was sentenced to seven years and two months’ imprisonment for manslaughter.

An 18-year-old woman, who can’t be named for legal reasons, was jailed for six years after she was also found guilty of manslaughter by a jury.

Travel Reid, 21, was sentenced to three years and seven months’ imprisonment. He pleaded guilty to manslaughter in February 2023.

At the party, one of the guests heard the 18-year-old female defendant complain about another person there.

She was heard to say “I’m gonna get Chardon to come down and he carries”. The witness understood this to mean Carnagie carried a knife.

The female defendant contacted Carnagie by phone. He was in contact with his friends via a Snapchat group.

Paddifoot sent a message saying “ching man up”. An expert during the trial said this means either to get ready to go or to bring a knife.

The jury was told that Carnagie had driven to the party from Derby in a silver Astra. The female defendant left the party and joined the people in the Astra.

Phone records show that Carnagie was in phone contact with Paddifoot.

Carnagie drove back to Derby, going first to Paddifoot’s street then to a car park on Abbey Street in Derby.

CCTV footage shows Carnagie’s Astra arriving at the car park shortly after midnight, followed by a grey Nissan Juke, in which Paddifoot was a passenger. It also shows people getting out of the cars to speak to each other.

At 12.08am, Carnagie sent Paddifoot a text message with the Bridgeside address, where the party was happening. During the trial, the prosecution described this as the men "assembling".

CCTV footage from a BP petrol station in Derby shows Carnagie getting out of the Astra and Paddifoot getting out of the Juke. The Astra and the Juke then drove to the Co-op in Stretton where they waited before driving to Bridgeside in Stretton, arriving at around 1.20am.

Guests at the party said people turned up wearing balaclavas, face masks and gloves and reported seeing one holding a "blade"and another holding a gun.

One witness said he saw Carnagie pull "something shiny" from his side and said he was punched by Carnagie. The same witness received two slash wounds to his leg. Another witness saw a masked man holding a knife.

Mr Freckleton was then stabbed and CCTV footage showed the cars driving away from the house in convoy at approximately 1.32am.

Forensic tests showed Mr Freckleton’s blood on Carnagie’s grey shorts, on the 18-year-old woman’s dress and on a foot mat in the rear nearside of Carnagie’s Astra. An examination of Carnagie’s phone showed he did a factory reset before he was arrested.

Judge Kristina Montgomery said all the defendants carried responsibility for Mr Freckleton’s death and made it clear that Carnagie took a knife to the party and stabbed and killed the new dad.

Judge Montgomery added that the 18-year-old woman was the instigator and knew Carnagie carried a knife and the associated risks. Paddifoot and Reid had gone to support Carnagie and were wearing face coverings.

In a tribute to Mr Feckleton, his family said: "December 11 2021 will forever be etched into our minds. Individuals travelled from Derby to Burton in convoy with premeditation to cause both harm and fear. They sourced weapons and used them on our son, Oliver Freckleton.

“After the callous, vicious and totally unnecessary murder of our son, not one of them tried to help.

“One of the defendants attempted to destroy evidence and also tried to encourage co-defendants to get their stories straight before the trial.

“As a family, we sat in court watching and listening to the evidence obtained by the police. This has been painful and extremely traumatic. It is the family’s view that the offenders have shown no remorse.

“Today, our beautiful, brave son, Oliver, finally got the justice he deserves. They have been locked away and cannot destroy any more lives.

“We hope and pray that this reminds others that carrying and using knives and other weapons as some kind of status symbol."

Detective Inspector Adrian Webb, of Staffordshire Police's Major Investigation Department, said: “This case highlights the dreadful consequences of carrying a knife and weapons. This is the reality; families left devastated and futures ruined.

“We worked relentlessly to identify those jailed today and, while we are pleased to see that justice has been served, Oliver’s tragic death has left an unfillable hole in the lives of his family, his partner and his young daughter. I would like to recognise the courage they showed leading up to and during the trial, and offer my heartfelt condolences.

“It is inspiring that Oliver’s parents have created such a positive initiative with the bleed kit installations and their charity work. I have no doubt this will save lives.”

A 19-year-old Derby man has been found guilty of murdering of a young father from Burton who was stabbed to death at a house party . After a two-month trial and four days of deliberation, a jury has today, Tuesday, March 21, found Chardon Carnagie guilty of murdering Oliver Freckleton.

Two of Carnagie's co-defendants - Mykel Paddifoot, 18, and a 17-year-old girl who cannot be named for legal reasons - were found guilty of manslaughter. A third co-defendant, Travel Reid, 21, from Sinfin Lane, Derby , had already admitted manslaughter half-way through the trial. Five people, all from Derby, have been cleared of manslaughter and murder.

The jury decided Carnagie, of Grampian Way, Sinfin , stabbed Mr Freckleton in the leg, while Paddifoot, of Thackery Way, Sinfin, and the 17-year-old girl helped orchestrate the visit to the party, knowing there would be serious injury caused.

Five defendants who have been found not guilty of murder and manslaughter are Isaiah Hall, 19, of Rose Hill Street, Derby; Adam Viola, 20, of Uppermoor Road, Allenton, Derby; Joel Lubangi, 18, of Osmaston Road, Derby; Pierce Douglas, 18, of Clarence Road, Derby; and a 17-year-old boy who cannot be identified for legal reasons.

A jury had been told Carnagie went equipped with a knife when he was called by the 17-year-old girl to attend the party in Bridgeside, Stretton, on December 11, 2021. The court heard he intended to cause serious injury to another party-goer but instead stabbed Mr Freckleton in the leg when his intended victim ran off, reports Staffordshire Live .

Mr Freckleton, a 19-year-old father, lay dying in his friend's arms, asking him to look after his baby daughter. Carnagie then ran off with his friends before jumping into waiting cars and speeding off.

Carnagie was one of nine defendants charged with murder and manslaughter. They all denied all charges, leading to a trial at Stafford Crown Court.

Prosecutor Michael Burrows KC told the jury at the start of the trial in January Carnagie had been told by the 17-year-old girl, who was at the house party, someone there had been trying to touch her.

The girl was heard to say: “I’m gonna get Chardon to come down and he carries."

Mykel Paddifoot and Travel Reid, from Derby, found guilty of manslaughter

The court heard how the eight other defendants "assembled" in a car park in Derby with the purpose of seeking revenge. Many had been wearing face coverings at the party.

Carnagie's intended target, who cannot be named for legal reasons, became a key witness and took the stand to say he believed it was Carnagie who later confronted him at the party and pulled out 'something shiny'.

The witness was asked about what happened when the 'Derby lads', as they were known in court, started leaving the house.

He said: "After they left, the last one, I believe it was Chardon Carnagie, turned around and punched me.

"I stumbled backwards into some bins. Ollie and my brother must've heard something and came outside. They told me to get inside and I ran to the back garden."

It was at this point Mr Freckleton and another witness were left alone - and that is when Carnagie attacked Mr Freckleton with the knife, severing two major arteries in his leg, the court heard.

Before the party, a text sent by co-defendant Paddifoot to another co-defendant said they were to 'ching man up', which the prosecution said meant to either to go for a fight or to bring a knife.

All nine defendants were arrested in the days and weeks following Mr Freckleton's death. Some witnesses told the jury they saw Carnagie with a knife while he was involved in a confrontation with Mr Freckleton and a friend. Carnagie denied he had a knife.

The jury also heard Mr Freckleton's blood was found in the back of the car Carnagie had been driving on false plates, and also on his shorts . Carnegie told the jury while on the stand he believed that blood could have been transferred from someone else as they ran away.

Carnagie, of Grampian Way, Derby; Paddifoot, of Thackery Street, Derby; Reid, of Sinfin Lane, Derby, and the girl will be sentenced at a later date.

A Derby man charged in a fatal Shelton crash that killed two passengers will face up to 12 years in prison, according to authorities.

DERBY, CT — A Derby man charged in a crash that killed two passengers faces up to 12 years in prison after taking a plea deal Monday, the Connecticut Post reports. Should a judge later deem the offer not appropriate, the accused will be allowed to withdraw the pleas and the matter will proceed toward trial.

According to the Connecticut Post, Rakiem Reid, 32, is accused of striking another vehicle while driving in Shelton in 2020. Two passengers were killed in the crash while a third was paralyzed, and police later calculated Reid's blood alcohol level to be over the legal limit the night of the crash.
