U2 performs the fortieth of forty shows at the Sphere at The Venetian Resort in Las Vegas. Attendance is 18,600; a sellout. Tickets range from $140 to $500 (for presale ticket prices) but many sell at resale prices of $400 to $1,450. The opening music act is Pauli "The PSM" Lovejoy, who is the official Atomic MC / DJ host of the UV Dance Party opening each U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere concert.

The very final concert of U2's epic 40 date run at Las Vegas's Sphere concludes this evening with a jam-packed show of special guest performances. Longtime U2 collaborator and producer Daniel Lanois joins the band on the stage with his guitar for "One." Toward the end of the song, Lanois leans into Bono on the microphone and sings briefly, and moments later Bono snippets a bit of "Invisible" ( "No them, there's only us." ). Bono: "There would be no Achtung Baby without Daniel Lanois."

Later in the show, Neil Finn from Crowded House performs "Don't Dream It's Over" in a specially pre-recorded audio track with Bono and The Edge performing along. The vocal track was sent in by Neil himself from Auckland, NZ in an email the night before. The song is dedicated Alexei Navalny's widow Yulia with Bono saying: "The idea is to record something special to honor Alexei Navalny's widow Yulia who's continuing a fight against Vladimir Putin for a free, free Russia. That's what we want for the Russian people."

Closing the concert, U2 perform "40," their old War song. Rehearsed at the soundcheck earlier in the day, the song makes its live debut at the Sphere and marking the first time it's been performed since 2016. As the song concludes, the band members leave the stage one by one. Bram van den Berg, filling in for Larry Mullen Jr. as he continues to heal from surgeries, is seen exiting the stage as The Edge pumps his fists to the crowd. Bono introduces the song with the following words: "Let it scream 40 days and 40 nights in the desert. What's a fella with a Messianic complex gonna do? This is a song we wrote in 40 minutes. There'd be 40 minutes on the War album left to record. I opened the sacred text on the Psalm of David. Just gonna write it out, that was the lyric. This is 40."

Witnessing this 40th show at the Sphere are a slew of celebrities including the Foo Fighters' Dave Grohl, Coldplay frontman Chris Martin (whom Bono wishes happy birthday and snippets "Yellow" during the concert), E-Street band member Nils Lofgren, and U2 producers Daniel Lanois (as mentioned earlier) and Ryan Tedder. Additionally, several actors and actresses are in attendance including Elizabeth Jagger (who turned 40 years old on this night), Brett Ratner, Pierce Brosnan, Michael Douglas and his wife Catherine Zeta Jones. Last but not least, First Lady Jill Biden is in the house tonight with Bono dedicating "All I Want Is You" to her. After the show ends, U2 fans stream out of the monolithic venue as Brian Eno's "Sky Saw" plays over the PA.

U2 Play ‘One’ With Daniel Lanois and Break Out Fan Favorite ’40’ at Final Sphere Concert

By Andy Greene

Andy Greene

U2 closed out the final night of their Las Vegas Sphere residency by playing the War deep cut “40” for the first time since 2016. The 1983 tune closed out countless U2 shows throughout the Eighties, and it happened to be U2’s 40th show at the Sphere since they opened up the $2 billion venue in September 2023.

Astute fans knew “40” was coming when bassist Adam Clayton and guitarist The Edge swapped instruments, which was a ritual in the group’s early days. “It’s been 40 days and 40 nights in the desert,” Bono told the crowd. “What’s a fellow with a messianic complex going to do? Here’s a song we wrote in 40 minutes. I opened up the sacred text of the Psalm of David. I just kind of read it out. That was the lyric.”

At the end of the mid-show acoustic set, where they’ve been playing Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over” for the past few weeks to honor Alexei Navalny , Bono told the crowd something slightly new was about to happen. “The other day we got a beautiful e-mail from Neil Finn, who wrote this bewilderingly beautiful song,” Bono said. “Attached to the e-mail was a version of the song he said we could play whenever we wanted. It’s a new version that he did, and we’re going to try and record it.”

U2’s plans now that they’re done with the Sphere residency are a bit murky. They haven’t put out an LP of new material since 2017’s Songs of Experience . It’s the longest they’ve gone without releasing an album since the start of their recording career back in 1980. Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. remains sidelined by back issues, though he was in the crowd for the penultimate show of the Sphere run on Friday night.

Last year, The Edge told Rolling Stone that they were working on an album “driven by guitar.” “That isn’t to say we are turning into AC/DC,” he said, “but we will find a way to use the instrument in a fresh way as much as possible. It’s still my first love for me as an instrument.” He refused to give a timeline on when it might come out. “We’re anxious and would love to get them out, but there will be a lot of options and other advice we’ll be taking about when to drop some new material,” Edge said. “But just to say, we’ve been busy and very inspired creating new stuff.”

As U2 Wraps Its Las Vegas Residency at Sphere, Ailing Band Member Larry Mullen Jr. Attends Friday’s Show

U2

On a windy evening in Las Vegas, U2 were finally reunited in the same arena for the first time in five years — sort of. Drummer Larry Mullen Jr. attended Friday night’s penultimate U2 show at Las Vegas’ Sphere , where he watched from a box seat in the audience.

Mullen, who has been recovering from neck surgery and other ailments, has been sitting out U2’s landmark Sphere performances. On Thursday, Bono , guitarist The Edge and bassist Adam Clayton were once again joined by Krezip drummer Bram van den Berg — who has been filling in for Mullen during the Sphere shows.

Saturday is the final night for U2 at the Sphere, where it originally planned to play 25 shows but extended to 40. (Phish is next up, with four nights at the Sphere in April.)

Press reports had previously hinted that Mullen was making his way to Las Vegas, which sparked rumors that he might hit the stage at Sphere for the final two shows. This would have marked the first time Mullen performed in concert with his band mates since 2019. (The drummer has continued to record with U2, however, and played on last year’s single “Atomic City”).

They were right that Mullen would be there, but didn’t perform. At Friday’s U2 show, Bono introduced Mullen in the stands: “The rumors that Larry will be playing with us tonight are not true sadly. But he is here with us!”

As the crowd started chanting “Larry,” Bono continued: “That is the man who pinned the note on the notice board at Mount Temple Comprehensive School all those years ago. And we are very grateful that he did and that he’s here with us tonight. We wish him a speedy, speedy, speedy recovery. We love you, Larry Mullen Jr. “

Bono then launched into the final song — which technically is part of the “encore,” but the band passed on the theatrics of leaving the stage and coming back.

Later, on social media, Mullen returned the thanks. “What an incredible night at the Sphere,” he said on U2’s account. “So grateful to Bono, Edge and Adam and of course Bram for an amazing job. Very emotional night for me personally.”

It was a fitting, special way to wrap up what has been a fitting, special experience for U2 and its fans. Coming off 2023’s “Songs of Surrender,” Bono and the Edge’s stripped-down reworking of U2 classics, the band has been in a bit of an introspective, celebratory mood for some time now. That also included last year’s Emmy-nominated Disney+ special “Bono & The Edge: A Sort of Homecoming, with Dave Letterman.” Now, “U2:UV Achtung Baby Live at Sphere” has been similarly unique in finding a new way to celebrate the band, its catalog and its longevity.

On Thursday night, Bono, the Edge, Clayton and van den Berg were spotted at the U2 Experience’s “Zoo Station” activation at the Venetian hotel, where they met with fans and explored the pop-up. (They also took photos inside the exhibit, including the one above.)

Much has been written about the jaw-dropping visuals inside the Sphere, and much of the imagery — including a deconstruction of the Las Vegas skyline — lives up to the hype. And even though the U2 shows are over, that impressive staging will live on via a concert film that was being shot on Friday (as well as other recent nights) and is expected to eventually play inside the Sphere.

“We are filming tonight,” Bono told the crowd. “This is the show that people will see after we all go home. In the future people will watch us, watching you… Give the future a wave.”

The enthusiastic crowd — which included several U2 family members (like Bono’s wife Alison Hewson), rocker Lenny Kravitz and other notables — obliged.

U2 Tour Rumours 2023

Original story by aaron j. sams (2022-08-03).

Please note: Until tours are officially announced, we mark all information in regards to them as rumour, even though we do endeavor to post only reliable information that has been shared with us by multiple sources. The below discusses not yet announced performances, and should be considered as rumour at this time.

Summary (See details below):

  • Crew were asked to hold schedules open for the second half of 2023 for possible live performances.
  • KROQ radio teased shows at the Sofi Stadium for an Irish band in 2023 before playing “Where the Streets Have No Name”
  • Previously reliable source suggests Soldier Field may have been booked for two shows in late Summer / early Fall.
  • A rumour about U2 booking a stadium in Dublin is not true, our source confirms the booking was for another band.

Update: August 1

Our source for the information about Dublin has shared that it wasn’t U2 booking a stadium for Dublin next summer, and indeed was a different act. The local gossip was that it was U2 making the booking at the venue, but now that the booking is finalized, it has been identified to be another act. We’ve removed the information about Dublin below to prevent any confusion.

Update: July 28

Over the last week we’ve been given information about a number of different stadium bookings and we are being told that this ties into U2’s potential plans. A previously reliable source of tour information has shared that Soldier Field in Chicago has been booked for two big shows for late Summer / early Fall. And it is suggested that it is U2 holding that space. KROQ radio hinted that an Irish band booked several dates for Sofi stadium for shows in 2023 this week before playing “Where the Streets Have No Name” (Thanks to Monopoly for that information!) Sofi stadium is a new venue, opened in late 2020 in Inglewood, California. (We previously listed information about a possible stadium booking for Dublin as well, but it was since confirmed it was not U2 making that booking.)

Although most of the news coverage has been about dates for Vegas at this new Sphere venue (see below), it looks as if U2 may be booking some dates in stadiums for 2023 if these are true. There appears to be some tour planning and routing going on behind the scenes. The Las Vegas Sphere complex is expected to open in the Fall and is expected to be open by November 2023. All of these rumours are about dates that are more than a year away. These are likely preliminary bookings to hold space at this time, and we expect it may be some time before a tour is confirmed and put on sale. But everything suggests the band will be making a return to performing next year. There’s certainly a wealth of rumours circulating at the moment.

We will continue to update this report as new information is made available. See below for our earlier report.

Original Story: July 23

U2 fans were surprised by Billboard Magazine on July 22 as a possible residency in Las Vegas starting in 2023 by U2 was mentioned. We cannot confirm these rumours with a second source, and all information points back to Billboard at this point. But it’s not the first mention of U2 making plans to return to the road next year, which we have been tracking for some time.

News first reached us in early 2022 that crew who typically work the U2 tours had been asked to keep their schedules open from June 2023 onwards. That suggested U2 had plans to perform next year. More recently we started hearing that the band had plans to do some outside performances in Europe next year, possibly a stadium tour or Festival appearances. But we were told that U2 had not signed off on the proposed tour plans at that time. It appears that the band may have finally signed off on doing performances next year, and we expect rumours will start to pick up steam from here. Usually the rumours start about a year ahead of the tours.

Willie Williams was reported to recently (last weekend) be in meetings with the band in the South of France to discuss plans for some 2023 performances.

The Billboard article suggests that U2 will be the first band to perform at the new MSG sphere complex in Las Vegas, currently under construction. The article suggests that the band has booked several nights at the venue, stretching over several months, but the shows will not be on consecutive nights during that time. It looks like the band may be planning on doing several shows there, but they also may be leaving the door open to do other performances in North America. They could also be in the early planning stages of the tour and are keeping options open to use the venue at several points, which may be whittled down later. They have planned multiple tour routes in the past before choosing the one that they follow. Billboard was unable to reach MSG or U2 for comment on the rumours.

The opening date of the MSG Sphere has not been revealed, but it is said they are working towards having the venue ready to go by November 2023. The venue which will be connected to The Venetian, can hold 20,000 standing or 17,500 in a seated configuration. The sphere is being built as a state of the art complex, including interior and exterior LED technology which will be fully programmable. It opens the possibility for bands to create an entirely new environment by transforming the walls, floors and roof of the venue. Also said to be included are other new technologies which may generate scent, or even wind in the venue, and there will be advanced speaker technologies delivering individual audio to each guest via 164,000 speakers. Imagine the entire venue transforming into the view from above the earth, and actually seeing the Bedouin fires from space as Bono sings about them in “Beautiful Day”.

The venue is being built by Madison Square Garden Entertainment in conjunction with The Venetian Resort. A second sphere is being constructed in London, with construction expected to start in March.

More about The Sphere can be seen in the “Sizzle Reel” below:

RTÉ has shared that “nothing has been confirmed and a spokesperson for the band told RTÉ that U2 are unlikely to be releasing a statement regarding stories of a Vegas run and so it is speculation for the moment.”

It’s very early, and any shows in Las Vegas are likely to be more than a year away. Being more than a year out, any tour rumours are preliminary at best and we urge caution before making any non-cancellable plans based on unconfirmed dates, regardless of the source.

There are many rumours, and some confirmed information about projects that have not yet been announced. This fall will see the release of Bono’s autobiography Surrender . A 40-song compilation of reworked U2 classic songs is rumoured to be released soon as well. The band will receive a Kennedy Center Honor in December of this year. And a line of Funko toys, delayed from earlier in the year will also be out in November. The band is also expected to participate in another Record Store Day release in November of this year.

Next year, expect the band to release the first album of new songs since 2017’s Songs of Experience . We are told that this album was substantially finished earlier this year in California on the album. An announcement of possible tour dates could accompany either release, but we expect it may be saved to accommodate the new album release.

It’s looking like the U2 machine is starting to gear up for the next couple of years. We’ve spent the last couple of years of semi-quiet to upgrade the site and introduce some new features. We’ll be here to report on what we hear and see, and are quite excited to see where U2 takes us next.

For more information about these projects we’ve collected some links from around the site below:

I'm far from U2's biggest fan, but watching them perform at the Sphere in Las Vegas was unlike any other concert experience

  • I recently saw U2 play at the Sphere, the revolutionary new music venue in Las Vegas.
  • While I don't consider myself a huge U2 fan, the immersive visuals and concert really blew me away.
  • The imagery was stunning, powerful, and thought-provoking.

Insider Today

On night three of a reporting trip in Las Vegas, wearing a fur coat, plastic lei, and four-inch heels during Super Bowl weekend , I unexpectedly found myself watching U2 at the Sphere .

I hadn't listened to the legendary Irish band since I was a kid, but my boyfriend and I couldn't resist checking out the new venue when we heard ticket prices had hit a record low.

Headline after headline proclaimed that the Sphere was an incredible game changer that would revolutionize live music. How could we resist?

And believe me, it was worth it.

The Sphere kicked things off with a star-studded opening night that attracted everyone from Oprah Winfrey to Jeff Bezos.

u2 a tours

That September 29 show was the first of what was supposed to be a 25-night residency for U2, but demand was so high that additional dates were added in 2024. It appears the band's final two shows at the venue, at least for now, will be on Friday and Saturday. Phish and Dead & Company have residencies coming in April and May, and you can still purchase $119 tickets for "The Sphere Experience," which includes a new film from director Darren Aronofsky.

It's been a splashy start for the $2.3 billion venue, which was dreamed up — and mostly paid for — by Madison Square Garden CEO James Dolan. The Sphere has frequently gone for fun visuals that now light up the Las Vegas skyline from the colossal glowing orb made with over a million LED lights .

After two days of watching it from my hotel room, I was ready to see what was inside.

There was already a massive line as we walked up to the Sphere the night before the Super Bowl.

u2 a tours

Since we got last-minute tickets — which were $215 each that night from a reseller site — and didn't have time to change, I was still wearing my outfit from Gronk Beach, Rob Gronkowski's Super Bowl pre-party  — plastic lei necklace included.

I do not recommend wearing a skirt and heels in 50-degree desert weather, but thankfully, the line for floor tickets appeared to be far shorter (and faster) than those who had bought seats.

After about 10 to 15 minutes of waiting — and many concerned "Aren't you freezing?" questions from strangers — we were in.

I loved the vibe of the Sphere from the moment we walked in.

u2 a tours

The atmosphere felt futuristic, with its glossy black walls illuminated by simple but bright neon lights.

We first strolled through a hallway lit up with moody blue lights, which switched to gold as we made our way to the bar. I overheard one stranger tell a friend that he felt like he was in a rocket ship.

The mirrored bar was sleek and modern.

u2 a tours

In an over-the-top city where the decoration can veer toward cheesy, the Sphere feels distinct in its cool and crisp minimalism.

The bar on its own was a fun destination to get a drink, and the $20 cocktails were cheaper than what we'd been paying at clubs like XS over the weekend.

Every drink at the Sphere is served in plastic reusable cups.

u2 a tours

We ordered a $20 24-ounce Topo Chico to kick off the night and were surprised when our server opened the can and poured it into a large clear cup that read, "Please return me. I'm reusable!"

The server explained that U2 had personally requested a ban on bottles and cans inside the venue. When we asked why, they theorized it was probably so people couldn't throw anything dangerous at the stage — which has happened in recent months to artists like Kelsea Ballerini and Bebe Rexha .

There were also fridges with canned drinks that you could purchase through the Sphere's self-checkout system.

u2 a tours

As someone who goes to many concerts and has waited in many long lines for a drink, I was extremely impressed with the Sphere's swift and smooth bar system.

There are also waiters frequently selling drinks on the floor, allowing you to get another round without leaving your spot or missing part of the show.

As we walked onto the floor, I gazed up at the sky-high LED screen that stretched before us.

u2 a tours

I took in the massive scale of the Sphere, which measures 366 feet tall and 516 feet wide, according to its website .

For a brief moment, my boyfriend and I thought we were looking at the venue's true interior as we examined the "bolted" panels that went up and down the walls.

When I looked up at the ceiling, I realized we had been fooled by the projection.

u2 a tours

A window into the "night sky," envisioned by the LED screen, winked back at me from the ceiling, which felt like it belonged to a grand cathedral.

As the music began, Bono's shadow danced across the walls.

u2 a tours

The LED screen frequently projected images of Bono and his bandmates playing throughout the show, a smart tactic that made them look and feel larger than life.

Light burst through the projected panels with each dramatic strum of the guitar and bang on the drums.

u2 a tours

I quickly realized you don't have to be a diehard U2 fan — although there were obviously many — to be in awe of what the Sphere can achieve. I've gone to music festivals around the world and seen hundreds of shows, and none of them can compare to the immersion I felt in the Sphere.

The visuals are so powerful and crisp, yet the overall effect isn't overwhelming. Honestly, it's a bit awe-inspiring. And the excitement in the crowd was truly electric as Bono's falsetto — strong and clear as ever — filled the dome.

U2 kicked things off with a handful of tracks from "Achtung Baby," their hit 1991 album.

u2 a tours

I silently thanked my dad for my childhood rock-music education as I sang along to most of the songs, even getting a little emotional when Bono started singing "One."

As the band started ripping through their classics, the visuals became more elaborate.

u2 a tours

There were multiple tributes to both Las Vegas and Elvis Presley, its most famous resident, as Bono sang snippets of "Love Me Tender" and "Viva Las Vegas."

The vivid details of the images, which often moved and shook with the music, were electric.

u2 a tours

I was obviously expecting some cool visuals, but the scope of what we saw at the beginning of U2's show was pretty incredible. The Sphere taps into the visual power that music videos had to further illustrate a song's message at the height of their relevance. It was inspiring to watch that impact return in full force.

And it was also just extremely heartwarming to observe the crowd around us. So many dads were clearly having the time of their lives, downing beer and wrapping their arms around each other's shoulders on their big night out.

There were also some celebrities among the floor crowd. Bono gave a shout-out to Sheryl Crow and Alicia Keys, who attended their set the night before her surprise appearance during Usher's Super Bowl halftime show .

One of the most powerful recurring images was a fire that burned from a tentpole as if it were a waving flag.

u2 a tours

The flames burned fast and hard into a night sky as the Edge shredded through his solo in "Until the End of the World."

The show slowed down, in both pace and visuals, during the second half of the band's set.

u2 a tours

As Bono launched into some ballads, the energy seemed to drop slightly. There were far fewer visuals, which felt like a bit of a waste of the space to me. If you're going to have the world's largest video screen, you should use it to the fullest.

But I also recognize that this part of the show probably meant more to the real fans. I wasn't as familiar with the songs, and the images focused more on projecting the band rather than dazzling us with powerful pictures or wild graphics.

The drunk woman behind me, at least, was still very excited. Her piercing cheers repeatedly broke through some of the tunes. I guess it truly doesn't matter what genre you prefer — there will be a "Woo! girl" in every music venue.

As the show neared its finale, the burning fire returned.

u2 a tours

The fire flag reappeared on the screen with flames that were now a deep shade of pink. As dusk turned to day amid the iconic opening notes of "Where the Streets Have No Name," the flames turned white as the sun shone behind them.

"This looks like Burning Man!" someone yelled right by us.

It was exactly what my boyfriend and I — who witnessed many sunrises on the playa at Burning Man last year — had said to each other just moments before. We immediately turned around to swap stories with him.

An orb peacefully floating in the sea filled the screen as my favorite U2 song began.

u2 a tours

I listened to "With or Without You" repeatedly when I was a kid with a cherry-red iPod nano. It is just so damn sad and beautiful.

The orb on the screen got bigger and bigger as the song went on, its core morphing into a kaleidoscope of sepia-tinged birds and butterflies. It seemed, to me at least, that U2 was very intentionally ending their show on a note of hope.

The fire flag was now just one of smoke. The orb in the water, a classic symbol of rebirth, appeared to be the earth growing with the beauty of nature once more.

Soon, the entire screen was filled with images of wildlife.

u2 a tours

Eagles, fish, snakes, and butterflies all fluttered above us as U2 launched into "Beautiful Day," the grand finale.

The Sphere's exterior screen burst with color as we left as the animals changed from sepia to rainbow.

u2 a tours

It was a fitting end to a beautiful experience, even for two people who hadn't listened to U2 in at least a decade. My boyfriend and I were really blown away by the overall atmosphere of the Sphere and what it can offer to concert lovers.

I can't wait to see what the Sphere does next.

U2 at Sphere: 4 bombshell predictions for final 2 shows

Just like that, U2 is set to close out their Sphere residency in Las Vegas this weekend.

It’s been a fun ride and feels like yesterday I was traveling to Las Vegas for their second show. Before the shows kick off, there were some big question marks — How would Bram van den Berg fit in? What will “So Cruel” sound like? How will they construct their setlist?

Luckily, the band put any worries to bed on the very first night. 37 shows later, and U2 has just two remaining on their 40-night stay.

While the setlist has largely remained the same night-to-night, that doesn’t mean the band hasn’t changed things up. Who would’ve expected appearances from Lady Gaga or “ Peace on Earth ” being played?

So I figured, ahead of the final two shows, why not try and predict some potential surprises?

4 bold predictions for U2’s final Sphere shows

Below you can find some predictions for the final Sphere shows. These include setlist changes (or lack thereof), big announcements, and a possible Larry Mullen Jr. sighting.

U2’s setlist largely plays it safe

While U2 has done a great job varying their setlist from night to night at the Sphere, I expect basic setlists on both of their final nights. For one, I believe the band is recording the shows for future releases. Why risk not having two performances to select/edit from? It makes more sense to play two static setlists across the shows.

But what does that mean? I think that the band will return to the Rattle and Hum set during their acoustic portion of the show. This portion of the set was intended to vary each night, and the band usually would play a different variation of it every night.

However, the first shows included the set of “All I Want Is You”; “Desire”; “Angel of Harlem”; and “Love Rescue Me.”

Now, I know three of those four songs are regulars on U2’s tours. “Love Rescue Me” was a huge surprise to hear and I could see the band wanting proshot footage of that. At the same point, “All I Want Is You” is playing in the Songs of Surrender arrangement, so it’s a unique rendition of the track.

Maybe U2 replaces “Love Rescue Me” with their cover of Crowded House’s “Don’t Dream It’s Over.”

Regardless, I wouldn’t expect anything radically different from this portion of the show. I’d expect the band toopt to stick with the songs they’ve performed several times rather than introducing new material.

Some songs are retired

This next prediction is looking at the macro level of U2’s career. It doesn’t necessarily have to do with the two shows so much as their implications going forward.

Unfortunately, U2 probably will retire some of the songs played at the Sphere after the shows conclude (namely Achtung Baby’s album tracks). It was amazing to hear songs like “So Cruel”; “Tryin’ to Throw Your Arms Around the World”; and “Love Is Blindness” in a live setting. However, I doubt there’s much of a place for them after their Sphere shows. After all, the residency is sold on the premise of hearing Achtung Baby in full for the first time.

“Atomic City” will sadly likely be shelved until the band’s next Las Vegas show. I love the song, which harkens back to the band’s punk roots, but it’s so tied to the city they resided in for the last six months a la “Ahimsa” and India.

There are some Achtung Baby tracks that are no-brainers for future tours like “One”; “Even Better Than the Real Thing” (perhaps not in this arrangement); “Until the End of the World”; and “Mysterious Ways.” Hopefully, “Who’s Gonna Ride Your Wild Horses” isn’t left in the stables after the Sphere shows conclude.

Some of the turntable songs like “Seconds” and “Peace on Earth,” while great to hear, also feel unlikely to return to U2’s setlists going forward. I’ll leave “Two Hearts Beat As One” as a possibility, as the band seems to like to go back to it every seven years or so.

Bono makes a big announcement

It’s been over six years since U2 released Songs of Experience, their last album of new material. Bono and Co. have talked about a new rock ‘n’ roll album for a while now, and I could see it being the time to make a formal announcement.

Either that or U2 announces a new tour at the end of the final Sphere show. I think that one way or another, Bono will make some announcement that will fire up their fans. The two things may go hand-in-hand, as their next tour will likely be in support of the new album. So I would bet on the former but wouldn’t rule out the latter.

Larry Mullen Jr. does show up

A rumor from the Daily Mail last week suggested that Larry Mullen Jr. may show up during these final U2 Sphere shows. I’d take these with a grain of salt, as Mullen has sat out all of the band’s shows thus far.

The report doesn’t indicate if it’d be for a song or the full show, which makes it harder to predict. I’m going to hedge my bets on him showing up for one song.

Bram van den Berg has filled in nicely for Mullen. I’d say the safe bet is that van den Berg closes out the residency, but I can see a world in which Mullen shows up for a song or two.

The reality is that Mullen probably can’t play a two-hour set. Unless U2 managed to sneak him in for months of rehearsals, he’d be tasked with playing songs he hasn’t in over three decades. Plus, the stamina required to play a show probably needs to be built up to.

Still, I hope that I’m wrong and I see Mullen showing up and van den Berg handing over the sticks and drum kit in a symbolic moment. I think U2 will play their signature concert closer from the ’80s, “40.”

Peeking behind the financial curtain at the Las Vegas Sphere as U2′s residency draws to a close

Band’s 40-show residency comes to an end tonight and should leave the band many millions of dollars richer.

After 40 shows, 700,000 tickets generating €75 million in revenue, U2 will end their residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas tonight.

The band were initially supposed to play for 25 nights, then a further 11 were added and then four more to bring it on an end.

U2 have been among the most ambitious and innovative bands in music history when it comes to live touring with the Zoo TV, Lemon and Pop tours over the years, utilising an arsenal of technological advancements to create a memorable concert experience.

In Las Vegas, though, the real star of the show has been the venue itself. When U2 opened the Sphere on September 29th last, it rendered every other music venue in the world out of date. The combination of the world’s largest and clearest LED screen wrapping around the audience and studio-quality sound made it an unworldly experience.

The $2.3 billion (€2.1 billion) development was first mooted by Irish-American businessman James Dolan, who owns Madison Square Garden in New York. Dolan drew a circle on a page with a stick person inside. From initial design to opening took six years, despite the interruptions of Covid-19 .

The band drove a hard bargain for the privilege of being the first to open the venue. The New York Post reported that U2 received $10 million upfront and 90 per cent of the ticket price for each concert

It is not the type of venue where artists can do one night and move on. Dolan needed an established act, preferably a legacy one, supported by fans with deep pockets and the means to travel. As it turned out, U2 wanted to reprise the 30th anniversary of the Zoo TV tour, which in the early 1990s extended the boundaries of what was possible with a live show. It was the perfect act for the perfect venue.

Nevertheless, the band drove a hard bargain for the privilege of being the first to open the venue. The New York Post reported that U2 received $10 million upfront and 90 per cent of the ticket price for each concert. The venue took the rest through merchandising and catering.

The estimates of the money U2′s members will make from each show ranges from $1 million to $1.4 million (€920,000 to €1.3 million).

Has it been worth it? The band themselves look rejuvenated and fans have been impressed.

[  I’ve never experienced anything like it’: U2 fans on the band’s Las Vegas Sphere debut  ]

“It was like something out of Blade Runner,” said U2 fan and friend of the band Professor Luke O’Neill , the immunologist who became a household name during the pandemic. He was there the first night along with such luminaries of music as Paul McCartney .

“You feel like you are in a brand new place when you walk in. It’s like nowhere else you have been in before. It’s sound and vision times a million. Your mind is blown by the graphics,” O’Neill said.

U2 fan Sarah Kenny from Galway went two nights with her husband during Superbowl weekend, which was played in Las Vegas. Their standing tickets cost $250 (€230) each. On the second night they had seating tickets, which they purchased on the secondary ticket markets for $200 each, down from a face value price of $400. Kenny says there were many Irish fans on the plane to Las Vegas.

‘Something was missing. I have been trying to figure it out, and the only conclusion I can come to is the building itself. It’s like in the pursuit of perfect visuals and sound, the music-goers were an afterthought’ —   Collette Langan, Irish concertgoer

“It was unbelievable. Your mouth is open to the ground several times,” she said.

Colette Langan, who travelled to Las Vegas with her sister Loretta, agreed about the visuals and the sound quality, but was underwhelmed otherwise by the experience.

[  U2 live in Las Vegas: An unforgettable gig unlike any other  ]

“Something was missing. I have been trying to figure it out, and the only conclusion I can come to is the building itself. It’s like in the pursuit of perfect visuals and sound, the music-goers were an afterthought. We had seats in front of the stage but they were really high up,” she said.

“I’m okay with heights but found it quite scary. There is no way you would stand up or attempt to dance, there was a real fear of toppling over and rolling down the hill of thousands of people in front and those at floor level who could dance chose not to.”

The question for the Sphere and for U2 is how they are going to top the experience.

u2 a tours

The next act mooted for a residency at the Sphere are The Eagles who are on their final farewell tour, but that might not happen until next November at the earliest.

Fortunately, the Sphere had planned for a long hiatus between major acts. U2 is not the major earning act at the Sphere. Instead, it is Darren Aronofsky’s Postcard from Earth, a 52-minute film especially commissioned for the Sphere which has been the biggest revenue generator. It had earned some $44.5 million in the quarter from September to November last year compared to U2′s €30.5 million.

[  U2 and the Las Vegas Sphere: You can admire the band without loving the spectacle  ]

Fans have been wowed by the experience, which includes swimming with fish, and the elephant in the room that looks like it is thundering towards you while your seat vibrates and the noise fills the room.

The Sphere remains a unique experience as plans to recreate an identical venue near the Olympic Village in London have been shelved over the issue of light pollution.

As for U2, there is a new album promised, but only when drummer Larry Mullen recovers from the back surgery, which has kept him out of the Las Vegas residency . Dutch drummer Bram van den Berg covered for him. When the new album will happen is a closely guarded secret.

The eagles in talks for vegas residency at the sphere, deal not locked, the eagles in talks for sphere residency in vegas ... would be for fall/winter, exclusive 2.6k 2/27/2024 4:55 pm pt.

The Eagles might be stepping in to replace U2 as the Sphere's next big legacy act -- that is, if they can hammer out these negotiations they're currently involved in ... TMZ has learned.

Sources with direct knowledge tell us the iconic rock band are in active discussions right now to potentially serve as forthcoming talent to fill in at Sin City's newest music venue ... which would be a big deal, seeing how there's only been one so far in its big debut.

We're told that while The Eagles are in in talks at the moment, a deal isn't in place yet -- and it's unclear when exactly things might get finalized.

One thing we do know is the timeframe organizers have in mind for a would-be residency for Don Henley and co. assuming everything works out ... we're told they're thinking Fall/Winter.

That jibes with the Eagles' farewell tour they announced last year -- dubbed 'The Long Goodbye' -- which is supposed to kick off in September out in NYC. They have a number of shows scheduled all over the country, and those are supposed to run through mid-November.

Assuming this timeline ends up falling into place the way our sources say they might -- it would appear they'd be slated to start performing at the Sphere sometime around late November, and would probably keep on jamming out there for a few months.

Bono and the boys have been occupying the Sphere space since September, and their final shows are going down later this weekend ... marking about 4 months worth of music.

Of course, the reviews for the Sphere have been spectacular ... and people say it's truly one of those things you have to see to believe. Lots of cool visuals going on inside (and out).

One last thing ... the Eagles have been touring with a live orchestra lately -- and while it remains to be seen if something like that would manifest at the Sphere ... it's possible.

In terms of money, no word on how much the 'Hotel California' musicians would snag for something like this ... but U2 is said to have been raking in about $4 million a concert.

If the Eagles get anything in that ballpark ... they're in for a very nice payday.
