The pandemic has dramatically altered the booking window for international travel including Ireland. Since we started in 1984, the flow and timing of bookings has remained remarkably consistent, averaging 8 - 10 months prior to travel. In the post-pandemic world, that window has now increased to 12 - 18 months especially for trips that include Royal County Down and Royal Portrush . We believe this trend will continue for the foreseeable future so we urge you to act promptly if you intend to travel next year.
Ireland is an enchanting land of epic landscapes, idyllic scenery, medieval castles and elegant gardens that’s home to more than one-fourth of the world’s natural links golf courses. The Emerald Isle has produced master wordsmiths Yeats and Shaw as well as golfing legends McIlroy and Harrington. Test your skills on the challenging, beautiful links such as the Dunluce course at Royal Portrush in Northern Ireland, home of The 148th Open in 2019, to venerable Ballybunion on the southwest coast. Collections of classic links courses are available in four primary regions.
Northern Ireland
Royal Portrush – Dunluce Links , host of The 148th Open in 2019 and The 153rd Open in 2025, is routinely ranked among the top 20 in the world and the only course outside of Scotland and England to host The Open. Dotted with memorable shots throughout, the rugged fifth green hangs on the precipice of a cliff, inviting agony and ecstasy. At Royal County Down sand dunes more than 5,000 years old tower 60 feet over the plush fairways and greens. The links, designed by Old Tom Morris and Harry S. Colt, stretches along Dundrum Bay with the Mountains of Mourne in the backdrop. Portstewart - Strand, was host of the 2017 Irish Open won by Jon Rahm, and is a hidden gem according to native superstar Rory McIlroy. Castlerock - Mussenden is a hidden gem nestled between the railway and sea. Pirates and smugglers once roamed the Southeast coast of County Down and the course at Ardglass might pillage your confidence - but you likely won’t mind.
Tour the museum in the Titanic Quarter in Belfast , a town of a half million people, where the infamous ship was built. Targeted due to its shipbuilding facilities, much of the city was destroyed during WWII. The Troubles , conflicts between the Catholics and the Protestants, took place in the 1960s and remain present through the often photographed ‘The Murals,’ popular art that played a conspicuous role in proclaiming the loyalties of Belfast’s conflicting communities. Donegall Square is the heart of town and most streets radiate outward.
Portmarnock, founded in 1894, routinely ranks top 50 in the world and is known for diabolical pot bunkers that have challenged the game’s greats from every era - Vardon and Locke to Snead and Palmer, Langer and Seve to Mickelson and Duval. The architect Tom Simpson saw his work as art and he sketched an impeccable canvas at County Louth , a seaside links stretching over 190 acres of dunesland. Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links presents outstanding views over Howth and the North Sea. The K Club - Ryder Cup Course is a Arnold Palmer designed parkland layout on the banks of the River Liffey where the Europeans whipped the United States in the 2006 Cup matches. South of Dublin, The European has thrilled the modern game’s elite players.
Dublin is the country’s chief port and center of commercial and financial power. The city features a plethora of sightseeing options such as the Waterford Crystal Factory and St. Patrick’s Cathedral where the saint himself converted pagans in 450 AD. chief port, center of commercial and financial power. The National Gallery features more than 2,000 exhibits. Architecture in Dublin dates to the 18th century and a museum honors famous native authors Joyce, Yeats, Shaw. No trip to Dublin is complete without a pint of Guinness or a hearty bowl of Irish Stew accompanied by Boxty, the traditional Irish bread.
Southwest Ireland
Fly into Shannon and hit your first tee 90 minutes later at the Old Course at Lahinch where a strong caddie will come in handy. You’ll face a bevy of blind tee shots on this venerable layout, which has been touched by elite architects from each generation - Old Tom Morris, Dr. Alister Mackenzie and The Open’s noted course renovation specialist, Martin Hawtree. Trump Doonbeg , a Greg Norman design, not only offers panoramic views of the Atlantic Ocean and the Irish countryside from each tee, but also excellent accommodations. Ballybunion-Old was carved from the earth by Mother Nature, similar to Pebble Beach and St. Andrews. Tom Watson adores the layout that ranks top 20 in the world. Old Head demands precision amid the ever present winds whipping across the stunning clifftop links. Waterville , along the Ring of Kerry, opened in 1889 and sits on a short list of Ireland’s finest courses. Renovations by Tom Fazio enhanced Eddie Hackett’s masterpiece. Within County Kerry another popular destination is Dooks, a scintillating Hawtree design that delivers ocean views against a mountain backdrop on every hole. Tralee was Arnold Palmer’s first design in Ireland and delivers spectacular vistas. Farther south, Cork is yet another MacKenzie jewel certain to test skill and nerve.
Away from the links, take in the town of Killarney , sitting in view of the mountains on the shores of Lough Leane; tour the Ilnacullin Gardens , an island of impeccable beauty; enjoy a drink at Durty Nellie’s , possibly Ireland’s oldest pub; stroll through the elegantly furnished rooms at Muckross House , the stately Victorian mansion located within Killarney National Park and later admire the colorful gardens sprinkled about the grounds there. Just outside of town is the beautiful Ross Castle , erected on the water’s edge in the 15th century and harboring spirits, perhaps.
Northwest Ireland
This region of the country is ideal for guests desiring a unforgettable trip offering impeccable value while meandering along roads less traveled, embracing the remarkable coastline scenery and meandering through pastoral countryside in leisurely pursuit of world class golf. The area has earned widespread high praise recently for the addition of St. Patrick’s Links at Rosapenna and the sensational reinvention of Narin & Portnoo . Gil Hanse and Jim Wager’s makeover of Narin & Portnoo opened in 2020. Tom Doak’s first Irish design at St Patrick’s followed in 2021 and debuted impressively at World #55 by GOLF Magazine. These two have effectively iced the cake for the original clubs that have always been an excellent experience. Sharpen your bump-and-run game before arriving at Enniscrone where two-thirds of the holes wind through mammoth dunes and the final four parallel the Atlantic Ocean. Byron Nelson and Rory McIlroy are legends who have navigated County Sligo , at Rosses Point on the shores of Drumcliffe Bay. Ballyliffin has two superb championship courses and is often called the ‘Dornoch of Ireland’ because of its location in the extreme northern portion of the country. Renovations engineered by Sir Nick Faldo have enhanced the Old Course while Glashedy Links is a Pat Ruddy and Tom Craddock design. Also at Rosapenna is the Old Tom Morris Links . Originally created by Morris in 1893, it has wide, rolling fairways and tricky, undulating greens. The course overlooks Sheephaven Bay along the Donegal coastline. The Sandy Hills course at Rosapenna is an ideal modern links. Surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean and Twelve Bens Mountain Range, the 27 holes at Connemara were designed by Eddie Hackett and opened in 1973. The Belmullet course at Carne revels in isolation along the ‘Wild Atlantic Way.’
Take a scenic drive through the countryside, stroll through the sleepy rural towns and vibrant villages, wander through Sligo, Mayo and Donegal , enjoying this remote and serene corner of the country. If fortunate enough to visit Galway in late September don’t miss the internationally renowned oyster festival. Enjoy a bushel, and a peck. Dunguaire Castle , on the shores of the bay, was a popular meeting place for Irish literary figures such as Shaw, Yeats and Lady Gregory.

Ireland Golf Reviews
Thank you for making it happen.
We loved ALL the courses. Adding St Patrick’s was really special. So glad Bill Hogan suggested it.
Adare was our least favorite, but everyone agreed it was ideal for the day we got off the plane to practice for the tournament we ran on the final four courses. Everyone’s favorite was Royal County Down (and mi ne especially because I had 3 birdies including the 18th!).
Drumshanbo was a huge hit. The Shed Distillery tour was fun, and we got a kick out of how everyone in the town knew about our helicopter within an hour. .
Wonderful Trip & Service
Thank you for all your guidance and help on our tour of Ireland. Allan O’Connor’s service – quick response and dealing with whatever we threw at him with a smile is really what made this trip so great.
Ireland is a beautiful country and I cannot wait to return on another trip with Premier Golf.
Thank you so much again for all you have done to make this dream of ours a reality.
Thank You Premier
Northern Ireland was a blast. We were there with the Davidson group and the hotels Bushmills and Slieve Donard were very nice. Our driver was a true gentlemen and took great care of us. Royal Portrush and Royal County Down were our favorite courses, and Ardglass and Ballyliffin were great surprises. I’m so glad we had a driver because after golf we had some of the local Bushmills product each day in the golf clubhouses. 🙂 Next time we will spend more time in Belfast, there is so much to do there. Our half-day tour was not enough, but overall the trip was superb. Thanks to Bill and Matthew and Allan for all the hard work.
Better than advertised!
We worked with your company and Bill Hogan set up the trip. When we got to Ireland Allan had everything perfect, and we wish we could have stayed longer. Kinsale was a nice town to start, and Killarney was our base for five nights to play the courses around that area. Loved Ballybunion and Waterville , they are spectacular. Our last round was at Lahinch and that might have been he best course of the bunch. Thank you to the team at Premier for the great time. We’ll be back!

Ireland Golf FAQs
It is estimated that there are more than 400 golf courses in Ireland, including both 9 and 18-hole courses. For a country its size, Ireland has a lot of golf courses. Three of Ireland’s most prestigious courses are Royal County Down , Royal Portrush , and Portmarnock .
The oldest golf course in Ireland is The Royal Curragh Golf Club, located in the heathland of the Curragh in County Kildare. There are records of a match being played there as early as 1852. Other old courses in the country include Royal Belfast (1881) & Royal Dublin (1885).
There are four key regions for golf in Ireland, each with its own charms and unique offers:
- Northern Ireland and the North Coast – Visit the home of some of the most challenging and famous links courses, including Royal County Down, Portstewart, Castlerock, Ballyliffin, and Royal Portrush.
- Southwest Ireland – Find the highest concentration of world-ranked courses like Ballybunion, Waterville, Lahinch, Old Head, and Tralee here.
- Dublin and East Ireland – Get a mixture of sights and golf in the capital, with fantastic links courses such as the European Club, The Island and Portmarnock, and parkland courses including The K Club.
- Northwest Ireland – Discover hidden gems and undiscovered courses, including natural and rugged links like Donegal, Enniscrone, Carne, and St Patrick’s Links at Rosapenna.
These are just some of the key regions for golf in Ireland, but given the sheer number of golf courses here, you’re sure to find more places to play on your trip.
The best time for an Ireland golf trip is subjective for most people and depends on budget, preferred weather, interests, and availability. Generally, however, the golf travel season in Ireland is from April to October when the weather is favorable, and courses are in peak condition.
To avoid the crowds, the shoulder months of April and October offer greater value, but you must pack warmly and prepare for wind and rain. We recommend May and September, a month after the season begins and a month before the season ends, respectively, to ensure better weather and fewer crowds.
The cost to play golf in Ireland varies depending on the season, currency, course, package, etc. Generally, playing in the off-season or either side of the peak season costs less. Northern Ireland golf packages can cost more than similar tours in other parts of Ireland, and it’s worth noting that Northern Ireland uses the British Pound and not the Euro.
The courses you choose on your Ireland golf trip will also affect the rates, with the most prestigious resorts commanding higher prices.
At Premier Golf, we offer 6-night, 6-round packages that start at $3,900 per golfer.
There are plenty of stay-and-play golf packages available all over Ireland. The best stay-and-play options for you will depend on what type of experience you’re looking for. Factors to consider include availability, weather, preferred courses, and budget.
To offer an expansive and full experience, we have 4 recommended stay-and-play packages in Ireland; Northern Ireland , The South West , Dublin & East Ireland , and The North West . Each golf tour allows you to sample entire regions for a complete and well-rounded experience.
Like many things, the best courses in Ireland will be subjective. However, based on sources that provide rankings of golf courses in Ireland, the courses considered the best by golfing enthusiasts, pros, and architects include Royal Portrush , Royal County Down , Ballybunion , Lahinch , Rosapenna & Portmarnock .
There are several ways to book a golf tour in Ireland, depending on your preferences and budget.
The easiest option is to book via a travel agency. Ireland golf packages are designed to include almost everything you will need on a golfing trip here. For instance, Premier Golf specializes in luxury golf tours to Ireland, with a team based in Killarney that will take care of everything for you.
You could also book a trip yourself via online platforms, booking travel and accommodation separately. You’ll need to check tee times and act as a one-person golf tour agency in this case. This option is a little higher risk as certain courses have restrictions and requirements, such as the need for a caddie.
A final option is to book via a local golf resort or club, where stay-and-play packages include accommodation and golfing among other amenities.
Depending on which option you choose, your experience will vary.

Eamonn/Sarah, Thanks for organizing our group of 8 for a golfing memory of a lifetime! Each one of the 7 courses we played in SW Ireland were stunning and surpassed our expectations. Thank you Sarah for the excellent hotels in the perfect location and for knowing the hotel staff would put out a fantastic Irish breakfast at 5:00am for those early morning tee times. Your attention to detail was second to none! A special bonus of getting us Pat as a driver who shared his extensive knowledge of Ireland as we traveled through your beautiful country along with his quick Irish wit! It's a trip we will all never forget! Slainte, Jim Holihan NY (USA) September 2023
Good morning Eamonn, Greg and I can't thank you enough for organizing and overseeing our fantastic trip to your wonderful country. It was truly great from start to finish. Our driver Tommy took good care of us. We all had quite a few laughs together. We thoroughly enjoyed the golf courses, even though we could have done with one Irish weather experience - I may be the only guy ever to say that ! Thanks again for everything. I will surely recommend you and hope that I can make a return trip in the near future. Stay well and Slainte, Eamonn. Jim and Greg NJ, USA September 2023
Hi Elaine, Thank you so much for the wonderful vacation that you arranged for our family. The accommodations at the three hotels were fantastic. Adare Manor is truly magical. The guys thoroughly enjoyed their golf adventures. The sunshine for their last round at Adare was the perfect ending. Nigel was terrific! Not only did he drive us everywhere we needed to go, but he was an expert at by-passing the entrance lines and getting us right in to any attraction. We could not have had a better host. Please pass along our thanks again. The other drivers were all great as well. It was not an easy task to accommodate three generations, golfers and non-golfers, but you succeeded well. We look forward to our Scotland adventure next summer! Best regards, Bill, Sandi and family, July 2023
Elaine - Our group had an outstanding time in Ireland and much of that has to do with your fantastic planning and organization. We all had high expectations for this trip and those lofty expectations were exceeded. Ireland is a beautiful country and the people are so welcoming. The hotel accommodations were excellent and the overall itinerary was perfect. All of us were very impressed with how smooth everything went .. from hotel check in, golf reservations, driver pickups etc. Absolutely no glitches anywhere on the trip. The golf was an unforgettable experience. All the courses were top notch and exactly what we were hoping to experience in Ireland. Finally, our driver Con. He made the trip. Con is such a warm, friendly gentlemen with a wonderful personality. We loved hearing him talk about his beloved country and share his knowledge on social and political climate in Ireland. S Barker USA June 2023
Elaine, Thank you for putting together an amazing 8 day trip for our gang of golfing misfits. You did an incredible job of coordinating the arrival/departure and other random requests from the guys in compiling a world class itinerary. The accommodations, courses and meal suggestions were all terrific. We were blessed by amazing weather which turned our great trip into an epic one. Special shout out to our driver Con who did an incredible job of cat herding, all the while entertaining, the boys with history lessons and amusing anecdotes. We would not hesitate to recommend you both to anyone seeking the golf trip of a lifetime. Cheers Greg. Greg Swart, California, May 23
Michael: Thanks so much. The trip was perfect. Seriously, I can hardly imagine it being better. Thank you so much again for your assistance. I had a great time. All the best, Michael R. USA May 2023
Elaine…..Almost home for a week now but still glowing over the experience. Everyone had a great time and gave me all the credit. I did inform them that though I spent much more time working on this adventure than I ever thought I would, it was you who made it work so well. Tim was also just terrific. He was extremely easy to work with and kept us informed of the schedule of pick-ups and drop offs so that all went very smoothly. We had a smattering of rain one day at Dooks and played in a windstorm at Waterville but all else was good. Thanks again, Steve Angel USA - May 2023
Hi Elaine, We truly couldn't have asked for better. Everything went so well. We were so blessed with the weather. We only needed our wet weather gear for about 3 holes at Enniscrone, and for most of our final round at Ardglass. All the rest of the golf was dry and mostly sunny, and not overly windy either. Our sightseeing days were similarly blessed, and we packed a lot of things in, including some significant walks and hikes as well as some of the attractions you suggested. The accommodation was all very good and varied so every stay was a little different. The included breakfasts were a real winner. We covered about 3,500 KM all up. Quite a drive. Highly recommended and a first-class job done - thank you! Regards,
Phil & Robyn Gleadhill. (Australia)
Dear Elaine, We wanted to thank all those involved at Golf Vacations Ireland for organizing our recent trip. It was a 2.5 year wait and well worth it. The accommodations, restaurants , driver and most importantly the golf were all wonderful! We were glad to have 2.5 years more of practice so we were not totally embarrassed on those amazing golf courses. Surely we gave the caddies lots of stories to tell to their peers. Thank you for sticking with us over the pandemic and for all your assistance and accommodations made during that time. We hope we will be back and will definitely be referring you to our friends and family! Thanks again and take care,
Susan and Brian (USA)
Eamonn- We had a fantastic time on our trip. One very interesting day of weather at Waterville, but overall it was just an absolutely awesome trip. Finishing on royal county down was a great way to end the trip. Thank you for helping to arrange everything. Otherwise, I just wanted to say thank you, and we will plan on using you again if we are lucky enough to make a trip back in the future.
Gregory Comfort (USA)
Eamonn/Elaine, I just wanted to drop a note to tell you what a great time we had. After 2 years or so we were finally able to get to Ireland to play some great golf courses. The people were friendly, the courses were magnificent, the pubs were warm, the Guinness was cold and plentiful, and even the weather was perfect. Even with all of this it still does not compare to how great Donal was. He was knowledgeable, kind, and very accommodating. He took great care of us and we in turn took great care of him. I would highly recommend him for any type of group you may host in the future. I will be sure to leave a five-star recommendation for golf vacations Ireland as well. Thank you for your patience.
Dean Robertson (GA, USA)
Hi Eamonn and Elaine, We just returned to the States tonight from our magnificent trip to Ireland. We had a fantastic time. All the arrangements went smoothly and worked perfectly. The hotels were great, the golf courses were incredible. Sean did a great job driving and being the tour guide. And we were particularly impressed with how you both arranged such perfect weather for us. Seriously, the trip was just fantastic and the planning that you both did for us was great. We particularly enjoyed the Merrion Hotel in Dublin and the Killarney Park Hotels. And the trip to the Cliffs of Moher on the 1st day worked out very well. The Kilmainham Gaol tour was very enlightening and very well worth it. We also really liked the Jameson tour. Thank you again for planning such a great tour!
David and Susan (USA)
Hi Elaine I wanted to say thank YOU it all was perfectly organized. We had a great time in Ireland and are never going to forget this trip. Freundliche Grüsse

Eamonn/Elaine, Thanks again for all your help on planning our trip, and for sticking with us the past three years. It took some time, but I can say categorically that this was my best trip ever to Ireland/Scotland - and I’ve done it 9 times. It was a great itinerary, great courses and great hotels. Thanks again for everything John
John Roselle (USA)

“Can’t thank you enough for making our Ireland golf trip superb!”
Our “bucket list” trip to play the best links golf courses in Northern Ireland and the world could not have been better thanks to NI Golf Tours and Jonathan Lennon. Having a local expert customize our tour and make all the arrangements worked superbly! There was not one issue with any of the hotel, tee times, caddies or transportation arrangements. We also loved the scenic drive to and form the golf courses and the golf in Ireland is awesome. Thank you Jonathan and Northern Ireland Golf Tours for your personal attention! Ireland is the ideal destination for world class golf and stunning scenery!
“Love to play golf in Ireland on the world’s best courses with the NI Golf Tour company.”
Thanks Jonathan for making another Ireland golfing trip so wonderful and special. Particularly loved playing the Old Tom Morris designed Royal County Down golf course where we had the rare chance to met Rory McIlroy. Also enjoyed the Trump International Hotel & Links Golf Resort in Doonbeg. We will be back. Next trip hope to do Royal Portrush, Killarney Golf Course and Killarney National Park. Thanks again for a great trip.
“100% Will Use NI Golf Tours Again“
As soon as we arrived in Northern Ireland, we had nothing to worry about. Jonathan from North Ireland Golf Tours booked our restaurants and even organised a personal tour of Northern Ireland’s amazing tourist attractions and historic sites. Could not fault anything. Totally professional service from start to finish, we cannot wait to return to Ireland for our next golfing trip with NI Golf Tours. From experience they are one of the best Ireland golf tour companies around.

Giant’s Causeway, renowned for its polygonal columns of layered basalt, is the only World Heritage Site in Northern Ireland. Resulting from a volcanic eruption 60 million years ago.
The Giant’s Causeway is the focal point for a designated Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and has attracted visitors for centuries. It is the place where myth meets science. It harbours a wealth of local and natural history.
Bushmills Distillery
It’s said to be the oldest licensed distillery in the world. It’s certainly Ireland’s oldest working one. Plus, it’s the only one to triple distil its malt whiskey – which make Bushmills uniquely.
See how this global Irish icon is made. You’ll visit the Mash House, Still House, Cask Store and Bottling Hall, find out about the role of the River Bush and the importance of Madeira barrels and Spanish sherry casks.
Titanic Belfast
The Titanic Belfast is an unmissable visit in any tour of Northern Ireland. It is located in the heart of Belfast, on the slipways where RMS Titanic was built.

Your next golf trip to Ireland: Why you should consider these 15 hidden gems
We’re hearing you better act quick if you plan to travel overseas. Many of the most popular destinations for international travelers are booking up for 2022—and some even for 2023. Golf in Ireland is back after restrictions limited travel for much of the past two years.
Though you likely have courses like Ballybunion Old (No. 17 on Golf Digest’s most recent World 100 ranking) and Royal County Down in Northern Ireland (No. 1 on ours and most World 100 lists) in your sights, we’re here to point you to some hidden gems worth trying to get to. Perhaps these courses will have more availability in the next year or two … even more reason to head there.
With help from our friends at Golfbreaks by PGA TOUR , they helped us identify these hidden gems in Ireland.
Dublin/East :
Mixing some sightseeing and golf in and around Dublin is a trip we don’t need to sell you on. It’s a trip any golfer needs to do once in their life. And if you’re planning to do it in the next year or two, we’re here to help.
County Louth, Baltray, Co. Louth
Laurence C Lambrecht
Other Irish gems get more fanfare, but it’s possible County Louth (above) is the best course in Ireland you don’t know about. Ranked in the top 100 of Golf Digest’s “Best Courses Outside the United States” in years past, County Louth ranked sixth in our most recent Best in Ireland list . Tom Simpson worked on an existing layout back in 1938 to create the fabulous links you can play today. Shane Lowry won the Irish Open as an amateur here back in 2009.
Royal Dublin Golf Club
Harry S. Colt repaired and revamped Dublin’s oldest course after the grounds served as a musket training site during World War I. Martin Hawtree did some work to the gentle, mostly flat but rolling land in the early 2000s.
Portmarnock Hotel & G. Links
Located on the original Jameson estate, the Portmarnock Hotel & G. Links is a relatively new, Bernard Langer-designed resort layout that sits on the Irish Sea. It ranked 13th on Golf Digest’s most recent Best in Ireland rankings.
For trip planning purposes, these courses are all proper to pair with the above:
Portmarnock (Old)
The European Club
Interested in booking one of these trips? Click here to start pricing out your trip with our friends at Golfbreaks by PGA TOUR, or call them: (+1) 843.779.7134.
South West Ireland
One of Ireland’s most naturally beautiful regions is the South West, with its rugged outcroppings and rolling topography. That makes the golf in the area so, so good—and though many of the courses are on your radar already, we’re here to tell you about a few others.
Dooks Golf Club
"STEVE CARR GOLF"
A stunning, rolling piece of natural dunesland can be found at Dooks Golf Club, 35 minutes from Killarney. The club was founded in 1889, making it one of the country’s oldest—but Martin Hawtree came in and renovated the course in 2006, securing it as being a must-add to your trip to the area.
Dingle Golf Links
Locals refer to it as Ceann Sibeal as the links sits right on the end of the Dingle Peninsula with incredible views of Dingle Bay and the mountainous Blasket Islands. You’ll have to drive a little out of your way to get to Dingle Golf Links, but you’ll find an open, links layout that feels like it’s been around for hundreds of years—though it was only built in the 1970s.
Like we said, the golf in this region needs no introduction. Trips to Killarney, Shannon and Cork should all include:
Ballybunion
Adare Manor
North West Ireland
Perhaps Ireland’s most underrated region for golf, the Emerald Isle’s dramatic northwest coast is home to numerous hidden gems that stand up with the country’s best.
Enniscrone Golf Club
Enniscrone boasts 27 links holes perched on a peninsula on the Wild Atlantic Way. Towering dunes line many holes and create a stunning setting on the aptly named Dunes course, which features dramatic undulations and scenic vistas.
Carne Golf Links
Hardly any land was moved in creating Carne, resulting in tees and greens nestled among the dramatic sand-covered dunes that resemble the lunar landscape. A third nine was built in 2013 on the most dramatic part of the property and is incorporated into the original design on every second day.
Donegal Golf Club
Situated on the tip of Murvagh peninsula, Donegal draws comparisons to Muirfield for its distinctive layout that runs in two large loops. Unlike many courses along Ireland’s rugged northwest coast, Donegal is relatively flat and presents subtle undulations and strategic bunkering.
County Sligo Golf Club
The 27 holes at County Sligo offer intriguing variety with dramatic elevation changes, forced carries and meandering burns. Several elevated tees provide scenic panoramic vistas of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounding mountains.
Narin & Portnoo Golf Links
Gil Hanse and his design partner Jim Wagner recently renovated this rustic layout, bringing to life the natural features that make this seaside links compelling. The revitalized Narin & Portnoo offers a blend of tight doglegs and generous fairways, with soaring dunes, raised greens and natural bunkering present throughout.
Rosapenna Golf Resort
Three hidden gems await at Rosapenna , located in the very north of Ireland, including the Old Tom Morris Links (designed by its namesake in 1893) and the Tom Doak-designed St. Patrick’s Links, which opened in 2021.
Ballyliffin Golf Club
Ballyliffin is Ireland’s northernmost golf club and, with two championship links courses, is widely regarded as the country’s finest 36-hole facility. The Glashedy Links , the younger (and longer) of the two courses, hosted the 2018 Irish Open, won by Scotland’s Russell Knox.
Strandhill Golf Club
Situated between the Atlantic Ocean and Knocknarea Mountain with views of both, Strandhill plays just 6,350 yards from the tips but challenges golfers with imposing dunes and intriguing green complexes.
Northern Ireland
Anytime Golf Digest does a survey of bucket-list destinations, Northern Ireland is near the top of the list. And for good reason: The stunning visuals and topography (in addition to other sights to see, ala touring the Game of Thrones sites) create dramatic golf that competes with the best in the world.
In fact, the actual best course in the world, Royal County Down , can be found here. Though it’s private, travelers can inquire about getting on— click here for more information.
Of course, you must also attempt to play Royal Portrush ’s Dunluce course , which was eighth in our latest World 100 Greatest rankings, and hosted the 2019 Open Championship after the game’s oldest championship returned to Northern Ireland for the first time in 68 years. Don’t forget the Valley course as well.
Here are the other courses we’d build around:
Castlerock Golf Club (below), ranked fourth on Golf Digest’s most recent Best in Northern Ireland rankings , was altered by Harry Colt in the 1920s, cementing its places among the best links courses in the land.
Ardglass Golf Club is just down the road from Royal County Down, making it the perfect complementary loop. The back nine is splendid, all along the water with some dramatic topography. Take a breeze through the clubhouse, believed to be the oldest in the world, with part of the building dating back to 1405.
Portstewart would not make any ‘hidden gems’ list among avid architecture fans, but it can get lost in the shuffle with the amazing golf in Ireland. Ranked on Golf Digest’s most recent World 100 rankings, the Strand course .
We’ll let Golf Digest equipment editor Mike Stachura, as avid of a travel/design buff as you’ll find, describe the setting: “The first tee at the Strand is set on high dunes, like you’re surveying the kingdom, with beach and waves down to your right and all of County Antrim in front. It’s no wonder the television series 'Game of Thrones' has used the nearby land as scene-stealers.”
Thus why Northern Ireland sits at the top of nearly every traveling golfer’s bucket list.

- Day 2: Play Lahinch Old Course , known as the St. Andrew’s of Ireland and a golfing mecca for over 100 years. One of the most respected links courses in the world, with its towering sand dunes, undulating fairways, rolling greens and fair share of blind shots, it is a true links in the traditional meaning of the word.
- Day 3: Play the breathtaking golf course at Trump International Golf Links (formerly Doonbeg Golf Club). Carved from sand dune origins; 14 greens and 12 fairways required no changes other than the necessary mowing of grass. After your round of golf, transfer to the 19th Golf Lodge , Ballybunion for a 2 night stay.
- Day 4: Play the majestic Ballybunion Old Course with it's beautifully contoured fairways that tumble down through a blanket of grassy dunes, it's no wonder these challenging holes have been consistently rated among the top courses in the world.
- Day 5: After breakfast, transfer to Tralee Golf Course and play the first European golf course designed by Arnold Palmer, this stunning setting represents a true paradise for those willing to challenge what is widely acclaimed as one of the finest links courses in the world. After your round at Tralee, transfer to the Blue Haven Hotel , Kinsale for a stay of 2 nights.
- Day 6: Play Old Head of Kinsale , a land mass jutting out over two miles into the Atlantic Ocean. The peninsula is almost an island with numerous caves running beneath your feet as you play the course. With the ever-changing sea breezes, the course provides a stern test to the touring pro and the high handicapper alike.
- Day 7: After breakfast, transfer to Portmarnock Hotel & Golf Links , Co. Dublin. Play the Portmarnock Championship Course which sits majestically on a narrow tongue of shallow duneland. As as a measure of its enduring quality, it remains one of the most respected venues in world golf. No other Irish course has been graced by so many distinguished players in it's rich history.
- Day 8: Play your final round in Ireland at The Island Golf Club, a qualifying course for The British Open Championship in 2013 and 2014. Nestling between the highest sand dunes of any links course in Ireland its rugged beauty cannot fail to impress.

Discover The Island From The Sky
How do you play 18 holes of golf in Ballybunion in the morning and another 18 holes at the Royal in County Down in the afternoon? For this we take to the sky. We have partnered with Executive Helicopters to facilitate this option of swift transfers for our clients. This option also makes for catching some breathtaking views and seascapes from above. These chartered single and twin engine aircrafts can carry a set of clubs for each passenger and most golf courses facilitate the aircraft at no additional landing cost. This option of heligolfing can be included inclusively as part of a full golfing itinerary or as a day excursion experience.
Time Off-Course
Discover Ireland your way. Let our expert planners create and perfect your itinerary ensuring that your visit to Ireland is the best it can possibly be. For non golfers or active golfers who would like to blend a vacation of adventure and discovery to the itinerary, we at Chieftain Golf Tours can customize and tailor to your interests and requirements. The options are endless.
Take a tour of one of our whiskey distilleries and taste the finest mountain dew to warm the heart. Trace your ancestors and discover your roots. Island hop by chartered boat off the magical west coast on a fully guided history and maritime tour. Nurture the soul and work those feet with an invigorating energetic Irish Ceili Class. Hike, bike or take time out to explore Ireland’s iconic famous landmarks and discover those secluded hidden gems. Among them visit the geological wonders of the Giant’s Causeway, discover the sights, sounds and stories of the RMS Titanic in Belfast or sample a drop of the black stuff at the Guinness Storehouse in Dublin City. Here in the capital you can shop until you drop. Boutiques, fashion houses, styles and designers galore, a must mission for wifes or partners .
On your vacation, experience and revel the stunning seascapes and dramatic landscapes of the Wild Atlantic Way, the world’s longest coastal touring route, carved along Ireland’s western Atlantic coast. A cardinal on any Irish vacation. Diversions and detours on the go, impromptu stops and photo ops as well as last minute itinerary changes are all part and parcel of the experience.
Along the Wild Atlantic Way you can walk in the footsteps of St Patrick and visit the 5000 year old ringfort of the pagan god Dagda. On a trip to Glenveagh National Park, recount the evictions at Derryveagh and catch a glimpse of majestic Mount Errigal. Traditional Irish villages, nestled along the coast have ensured that old traditions and the Irish language have been preserved. With music and dance the language and soul of Ireland, expect those feet stomping rhythms and haunting ballads in some of Ireland’s best and least known pubs. A sore head can also sometimes be expected by overindulging on the blackstuff or due to the effects of Ireland’s finest liquor – but in the course of this journey you can most definitely expect to make new friends and acquaintances that you never ever had before.

Our Celtic Cousins – Scotland
The ancient bond that binds Ireland and Scotland needs no introduction. Our connection to our celtic cousins are well forged through kinship, a yearn for independence, a shared celtic language unique to both and also through music, song and dance. This interconnection also inevitably extends itself to the putting green!
We at Chieftain Golf Tours are privy to have unfettered and exclusive land and sea travel arrangements through our sister company Bus Feda, who have been providing a regular passenger service to Scotland since 1963. These provisions extend themselves to privileged and preferential rates to some of Scotland’s best accommodation providers.
With over 500 golf courses to choose from, welcome to Scotland. Acknowledged as the birthplace of the game, it is a magnet for golfers from around the globe. St Andrews, Carnoustie, Turnberry, Royal Troon along with some hidden gems such as Corrie, Cullen Links and Anstruther are all on the menu. So if you’re thinking of a solo Scottish golf tour or a blend of Irish and Scottish – reach out to us at Chieftain Golf Tours with your details and we will do the rest. We plan, you play.

Traveled with Chieftain Golf Tours in August 2021 as part of a golfing party of 28. Spent the best part of a week searching for vacation golf providers in Ireland on the web and at the last minute discovered the Chieftain site. From our initial enquiry to leaving Ireland they really were awesome. Very efficient in organizing everything from our schedule, equipment, transfers, accommodation, and even planning our evenings entertainment! Seven of our guys also wanted to fish the Atlantic ocean and they even arranged this on the last day. Absolutely no hesitation writing this testimonial or recommending these guys.
Just a word of recommendation for Chieftain Golfing Co in Ireland on behalf of the Johnson and Nelson golf group. Having been to Ireland a few times before in years gone by, we thought we had seen it all. This time to be different we chose Chieftain Golf and having discussed what we’d done in previous years, they put an itinerary together which took us to another part of the Irish island. What an experience. Totally different and we were all just blown away. At the start or end of the day we also stopped en route to see the sights around the Wild Way of the Atlantic route. The history of this place is truly fascinating and we didn’t expect this to be part of our experience. A big thank you to Joe and Brian (our drivers and guides) for a truly amazing experience. Also a big thank you for arranging and looking after the ones who weren’t golfing!
Went to Ireland in fall 2021 on an all inclusive package tailored for our golf academy group. We had a truly marvelous vacation. Brian’s attention to detail was meticulous and we knew from the start the timeline would run smoothly. We are already provisionally scheduled for a return using Chieftain Golf for fall 2023. Thank you all.
Due to Covid restrictions we decided to go golfing in Ireland. To be honest we had limited knowledge on Irish courses or golfing trip providers there. Having contacted and arranged with Chieftain we flew Stansted to Belfast. The flight is only 35mins. The bus we had on our transfers was a new, very modern type and had free wifi. We stayed at two different hotels which were outstanding and organised by the Chieftain company. The golf courses there are really stunning but what stood out for us was how laid back it is. Absolutely no rush. After such an amazing time there I have only two simple recommendations. If you’re there to play golf, play those links courses along the North and West Coast and without a doubt in the world – book your trip with Chieftain Golf Tours.
I can’t recommend this company enough, from my first email to Bryan nothing was a problem. He organized absolutely everything for us, weeks before we departed. All we had to do was get to Dublin Airport. Bryan then picked us up there late on Thursday evening and brought us to our accommodation. We spent the next 3 days playing golf, eating out and drinking in some beautiful pubs in the north and west of Ireland. Nothing was too much for Bryan and he really made our trip. The bus was unreal, very sleek, had all mod cons including free wifi and of course the fridge, which was never empty. We were dropped back to Dublin Airport on Sunday evening for our late flights back to Leeds Bradford. I will never try to plan a golfing holiday again when these guys are happy to do it for ya!!”
Just a word of appreciation from The Country Club group. Our vacation to Ireland was truly wonderful and all our transitions ran so smooth. We also enjoyed visiting some sights in Dublin on the last day. Many thanks to Chieftain for making it happen.
I decided to use Chieftain Golf for our 8 day Golfing trip to Ireland which has been talked about for nearly 3 years. We chose this company on the recommendation of my father in law who had used them before. I hate to admit it but his advice on this occasion was right on the money. Joe, our driver, picked us up from the airport and for 8 days drove us the length and breadth of the country. Not only did he move us between courses but at night he always seemed to know where to find the best pubs for traditional music where he would sometimes even join in on the session himself. Highlights for us were obviously Ballybunion, The K-club and Royal Portrush, but also worth a mention was Rosapenna and the best 9 hole i have ever played at Cruit Island. We are already planning our return visit next year, so thank you Brian for organising the tour but a special mention has to go out to Joe who made our trip a lifelong memory.
