L’ANGE HAIR Le Duo 360° Airflow Styler

2-in-1 Travel Curling Iron

If you need to curl and straighten your hair while traveling, then a 2-in-1 travel hair curler is a great option. You have access to both tools without sacrificing the extra space.

This travel sized curling iron by L’ANGE doubles as a flat iron, to give you a variety in your hair without having to worry about carrying multiple items. Plus, it’s a dual voltage curling iron, which means you can cart it around to any country in the world and not have to worry about blowing a fuse.

I’ve always traveled with both a curling and flat iron (unless I’ve had my hair permanently straightened recently) so when I found this 2-in-1 travel hair curler, it was the perfect solution.

You can choose your preferred heat with the adjustable temperature setting of 280°F-430°F. My hair is fine and wavy, but the roots carry some extra curl, so when I brought this on a four-week trip, it took a few extra glides.

All things considered, I have to say this 2-in-1 curling and straightening tool is one of the best travel curling iron tools out there. It works perfectly for the occasional curl and daily smoothing.

Conair ThermaCell Compact Curling Iron

Cordless Curling Iron for on the Go

When you travel with electronic devices or hair styling tools, you have to think about plugs, adapters, and voltage. Especially if you’re traveling to somewhere like Europe, where the plugs don’t match. Unless you travel with a cordless curling iron.

I had always wanted cordless hair tools for road trips or places where access to power outlets aren’t easy to come by. Measuring a mere 6.4 inches, the ThermaCell by Conair is the ultimate cordless curler to carry throughout your travels!

Our favorite feature of this cordless curling tool is obviously the fact that there are no plugs or batteries to fuss with. And the ThermaCell cartridges last several months, so you can style your hair anytime, anywhere without worrying about running out of juice.

The ThermaCell also saves you time by heating up in as little as 30 seconds, giving you plenty of time to hit the city and enjoy your vacation. This portable curling wand is a great addition to your packing list, and due to the lack of cord, you don’t even have to worry about the voltage. Roadtrip, here we come!

The Importance of Dual Voltage Curling Irons

Before you head off to purchase you’re favorite of the best travel curling iron options, we need to have a chat about the importance of a dual voltage curling iron. Voltage refers simply to electricity, and different countries you might travel to have different types of electricity. For example, here in the US, we use 110-120V, but in Europe, they use 220-240V.

There’s a good chance that your electronics are built for the same voltage as the country in which you bought them. That means that if you take your non-dual voltage hair curler with you while you’re visiting another country, it might not work. In fact, you could even blow a fuse or destroy your travel hair tool if you try to use it. Not cool!

If you want a full run-down on voltage by country, you can check out this World Standards page .

Learn about voltage converters vs. adapters !

To use your favorite travel curling iron in another country, you’re going to need two things:

  • The correct voltage
  • A travel adapter

Your hair styling tools, including blow dryers, curling wands and irons, and hair straighteners use a ton of electricity. That means it’s important they they are used with the correct voltage.

Some hair tools are labeled “dual-voltage,” which means they’ve been designed to be used in multiple countries. If you’re traveling outside of the US (or a country that uses the same voltage) you’re going to want to bring your dual voltage curler with you.

Once you have your hands on a dual voltage curling iron, you’re also going to need a travel adapter. A travel adapter enables you to plug your electronics into international outlets while you travel. Since not every country uses the same type of plug, we highly recommend you buy an international adapter .

Visit this power outlet guide for travelers to see a full list of plugs and outlets by country!

The Best Travel Curling Iron for the US

If you’re both from the US and traveling within the US, you won’t need to get a dual voltage curling iron. But you might want to save some space by choosing to travel with a mini curling iron.

If you are traveling to the US from a country outside of the US, you’ll need to travel with a dual voltage curler (you can still save space by getting yourself a mini iron). Make sure that you switch the voltage to 110V/120V before using your travel hair curler once you’ve arrived in the US.

The Best Travel Curling Iron for Europe

Is your travel curling iron dual voltage? If so, then that is the one you’ll want to use if you’re traveling from the US to Europe, Asia, Africa, or the South Pacific.

If the one you have at home is not a dual voltage curling iron, you’ll want to look into purchasing a new one for your travels (but avoid the 1-inch Mini Hair Curling Iron because it doesn’t have that feature).

Note that if you purchase a travel curling iron for Europe while you’re there, it likely will be a curling iron with a European plug. If you’re from the US, a European curling iron won’t help much when you get home!

A dual voltage curling iron is not automatically set for travel, so make sure to switch your hair tools to 220V/240V before you use them at your destination!

So, are you ready to spend your vacation with beautiful curls without the fuss? The best travel curling iron can easily take your hair from flat to va-va-voom in a matter of minutes!

I would like to purchase a 220v -2 prong curling iron. Not a dual voltage. They are not consistent in overheating even with all the adapters and “dual capability.”

I simply want to purchase a European 2-prong curling iron. Could someone post that as a purchase option please?

I bought two of the 6th Sense Styling Technology. One for travel/gym bag and one for home. I love it so much!

Thanks for sharing your love of your curling iron with us Jillian! Always love hearing the feedback of our readers!

Sandra Manners

I always travel with a normal size curling iron but find it is a little too long to fit comfortably in my personal item. I purchased the Conair Mini Pro Ceramic but found it was too hard to use on my shoulder-length hair. I kept burning my fingers! I think it would work well for someone with short hair, however. I returned it and bought the AmoVee 2-in-1 curling iron. This one is a keeper. Much easier to use and I like the padded sleeve that comes with it. It is dual voltage too! In the meantime, I stumbled across an old Charlescraft Quartette curling iron in a second-hand store for $10. The handle and the four curling iron barrels are separate and snap together. Smart design! It is not dual voltage but I can use it for domestic travel. I notice a similar one (Triplette instead of Quartette) is for sale on Poshmark.

The best thing I’ve used is my Karmin curling iron, I love it.❤❤❤

Best Travel Curling Iron 2022 – Buyer’s Guide

Looking for the best travel curling iron?

It is almost impossible to maintain a hairstyle naturally when you are on a travel, camping, adventure trip or outside for project work! If the location has an electrical problem, it can be worse!

However, if you carry a light, portable, manageable, usable travel-friendly butane curling iron for international travel, it can be possible. The travel-friendly butane technology supported curling iron specifically is designed for travelers who want a quick hairstyle. So it has to have some precise criteria to be an efficient and better curling iron while traveling.

Conair Travel Curling Iron with Storage, 1- Inch Ceramic Curling Iron in Gold by Travel Smart

Table of Contents

Features to look for in the best travel curling iron

Travel-friendly curling irons must be lightweight and small compared to other general curling irons. People prefer to purchase mini curling irons to use them when  traveling so that they don’t take extra space in the luggage! A mini curling iron looks identical to a conventional curling iron, except the barrel and handle are smaller than normal.

For the best travel size curling iron, the barrel size is typically 5/8 or 3/4 inches, maximum 1 inch. If you have large or thick hair, try to use 1”. If you have short hair, go for less than 1”. It will help to carry and manage curling iron while traveling.

The barrel material should get perfect, durable, and damage-free hair and have fastest and high heat transfer for immediate and superior results. Ceramic is the perfect material for a travel-friendly curling iron. User should check the handle and the plate material of curling iron

The biggest barrier of travel-friendly curling iron is a voltage meter for plugging. It is particularly the case when you’re traveling overseas and need to bring along plug and voltage adapters to use styling appliances. The products that have a dual voltage of standard 120V used in the US and 240V for operation in foreign countries are more preferable. Dual voltage curling iron can be used without a voltage adapter though users will need US to EU plug adapter. Countries that work without a voltage adapter are Germany, The Netherlands, France, Austria, Italy, and Spain.

Some Common Adapter Plug Types

The chart below lists is the appropriate adapter plug models for the most familiar travel destinations.

Cordless curling irons solve the plug problem entirely, as they don’t rely on electricity for power.

Most cordless curling irons run on butane cartridges and get hot when this pressurized liquid safely combusts inside of the appliance. While you don’t have to recharge batteries to continue using a butane-powered cordless curling iron, it is necessary to replace the cartridges regularly.

Temperature

The temperature should be similar to a usual curling iron. It must have many heats setting options with lowest heat (200°F) and the highest heat (450°F).

  • Please keep your Travel-friendly Curling Iron safely especially cordless. If it turns on, an auto can cause a harmful accident.
  • Carry your small and light curling iron in the bag that can easily find.
  • As you are traveling, your hair will be dirtier. So Hair must washout with a deep-clean shampoo that will give a chunky look. Then conditioning hair only ends not in the roots and uses it half. Conditioner can drag down your hair, which can make curls drop out of it.
  • Blow-dry hair upside down with your hands until hair is completely dry. Do not curl hair when it is wet.
  • A mousse or curling cream creates body and helps tired hair to hold curls.

FAQs on curling iron for international travel

1. can curling irons go through airport security.

According to the TSA, curling irons are only allowed in hand luggage and not in checked luggage. But they require a safety cover so as to prevent accidental activation. If it is a battery-operated curler, you should remove the batteries and put them in the check-in baggage.

2. What to look for in a travel curling iron?

If you need to travel with your curling iron, you should look for one which is lightweight and travel-friendly. It should facilitate dual-voltage so you can carry it to any place in the world. A cordless one could also be less cumbersome to carry. Try one with a universal 1” barrel so you don’t have to carry too many accessories.

3. Can you use your curling iron in Spain and other countries in Europe?

It depends on the make of the curling iron. In case it is the dual voltage you need not carry a power adapter. If the curling iron runs on 230volts of power it is a compatible appliance to use in Spain. However, for other European countries, you might need to check the specification if it is 110-240v it means the multi worldwide voltage .

10 Best Mini Curling Irons for Travel | 2022

Finding the perfect mini curling iron. (July 2023)

One of the hardest things about having a beauty routine while traveling is that you often don’t have access to all of your tools and products. Hot tools like curling irons, hair dryers, and hair straighteners can be bulky and take up a lot of precious room in your suitcase. Especially if you’re packing light, these are the first things to get left behind. But, with these mini travel curling irons, you don’t have to give up your gorgeous curls!

The Mini Curling Iron: The 10 Best That We Found

1. 6th sense 2-in-1 mini flat iron/curling iron.

1 inch travel curling iron

SHOP:  Amazon

What We Like

An obvious pro to this curling iron is that it doubles as a hair straightener. This is an excellent option if you like to switch up your style when doing your hair daily. You won’t have to sacrifice extra space by packing another hot tool. Another thing that I love about this mini option is that it’s a dual-voltage curling iron. This means you can take it to any country without worrying about blowing a fuse in the hotel you’re staying at.

What We Don’t Like

One drawback to the 6th Sense 2-in-1 is that it only has one heat setting on it. If you have fine hair, this mini curling iron will still work great, but not so much if you have curly hair. Depending on your hair type, you may need to look for an option. You may need an option that gives you more range when it comes to temperature settings.

2. Conair Mini Pro

1 inch travel curling iron

This Conair Mini Pro is a great choice for a budget-friendly  option that fits right in your purse .  Because it takes up so little space, you may not need to give up any space in your suitcase. Just throw it in your backpack or carry-on, and you’re good to go. It also heats up quickly and gets hot enough to curl thick hair without having to go over your curls five times.

Because of its’ smaller size, there are a few drawbacks depending on your hair length. If you have super long hair, it’s going to take a very long time to curl all of your hair. If you have short hair, this is a good choice, but if your hair is far past your shoulders, you might need a larger barrel.

3. AmoVee 2-in-1 Mini Flat Iron/Curling Iron

1 inch travel curling iron

This AmoVee 2-in-1 works well as a curling wand and a flat iron to help you create that put-together look that you feel you can only achieve at home. This is one of the best titanium curling irons out there that are suited for travel. The titanium design gives you a consistent temperature throughout the barrel so the heat is distracted evenly, resulting in beautiful curls. The fact that it is dual voltage makes it an excellent choice for international travel. And if you need even more features, this AmoVee 2-in-1 Mini has a handy swivel cord so it doesn’t get tangled while doing your hair.

One thing to mention that is a potential drawback about this hair tool is that the temperature is fixed at about 380 degrees Fahrenheit. The temperature settings aren’t adjustable like they are on some other curling irons, so if you have thick, curly hair that is difficult to manage, you might need something that gets a little hotter.

4. Conair ThermaCell Compact Curling Iron

1 inch travel curling iron

If you’re traveling internationally and aren’t able to find a dual voltage curling iron, or if you just don’t want to worry about cords at all, this Conair ThermaCell Compact curling iron is a great solution. When you travel with any electronics, especially ones that require a little more power, you have to think about adapters and the kind of voltage that they require. This Conair curling iron’s battery cartridges last several months so you won’t have to worry about running out of juice suddenly when you’re using it.

You do get one extra cartridge when you purchase the curling iron, but after that, you’ll have to buy additional ones after they run out of power. Unfortunately, the batteries that power this Conair curling iron aren’t rechargeable, which would be a nice feature. However, for road trips,  camping trips , or international travel, this cordless curling iron is a great choice.

5. Xtava The It Curl Oval Wand

1 inch travel curling iron

If you’re looking for a curling wand with more temperature range, this Xtava curling iron is for you. Lack of temperature control is something that a lot of mini curling irons don’t have, so if that’s a feature that you’re looking for, this will probably be your favorite curling iron. The ceramic wand on this Xtava option heats up to 410 degrees Fahrenheit very quickly and has 22 temperature settings before it gets up to that maximum heat. It also features a dual voltage design so you can bring it to international destinations.

One thing that I would look out for is its’ size, however. While it still is technically travel friendly, the design of this curling wand is lightly longer than some of the other pocket-sized curling irons in this list. It will still fit easily in a suitcase, but will take up slightly more room that some of the other models.

6. VAV 2-in-1 Hair Straightener and Curler

1 inch travel curling iron

This VAV 2-in-1 is another great curling iron/straighter option to help you conserve some space while you’re packing light. The ceramic barrel will help give your curls that salon-grade look in no time; it only takes about 30 seconds to heat up. Unlike the 6th Sense 2-in-1, this VAV option has two heat settings, so it works for thin hair and thick hair. The low setting is enough to give you gorgeous curls without damaging your hair too much.

However, if you’re someone who does a lot of international travel, this won’t be the best curling iron for you. This VAV 2-in-1 is not a dual voltage wand, which could leave you without any hair tools at all if you try to use it and a fuse blows. This curling/straightening duo is much better suited for domestic trips.

7. Berta Mini Hair Curler

1 inch travel curling iron

Most of the mini curling irons on this list are on the affordable side, but this Berta Mini Hair Curler is an extremely affordable option. The ceramic barrel also heats with negative ions so your final look is much less frizzy than it would be with another travel curler. The 3-degree adjustable temperature setting, ranging from low to high heat, is designed to accommodate all hair types. Last but not least, the 360 degree swivel cord keeps you from getting tangled up while you’re styling.

Like some of the others on this list, this Berta curler works great for domestic travel, but it doesn’t come with dual voltage, so it may not be best suited for international destinations.

8. FURIDEN Mini Curling Iron

1 inch travel curling iron

Although it’s marketed at a mini curling iron, this FURIDEN curler actually allows you to straighten or curl using the same wand. Other great features that I love about this FURIDEN Mini curling iron are its 60-minute auto shut-off function, universal voltage, and the 6 foot swivel cord. The barrel size is 9 inches in length, so it’s a bit smaller than traditional curling irons, making it the perfect size for a quick trip.

One thing that was noted in some reviews is that this curling iron doesn’t work great on short hair due to its design. Those with medium to long hair should have no problem using this particular model though!

9. SEMBELLE Cordless Curling Iron

1 inch travel curling iron

One of the issues with the cordless Conair curling iron that I have on this list is that it isn’t rechargeable. That problem is solved with this SEMBELLE Cordless Curling Iron. To make it even cooler, it can also charge your phone. The built-in battery lasts for about 45 minutes, which is long enough to achieve any hairstyle, and the wand is only 7.9 inches long making it easily portable. It also has great reviews for all hair types, so there’s not much in the ‘con’ category for this curling iron.

The only potentially problematic feature I could foresee with this SEMBELLE curler is that it needs to be charged for about 8 hours to acheive a full charge after using it. If you remember to plug it in to charge before bed, this shouldn’t be a problem. But in the event that it does run out of charge mid-style, you may find yourself in a bit of a pickle.

10. Remington Pro Advanced Collapsible Curling Wand

1 inch travel curling iron

In an effort to save even more space, Remington created this collapsible curling wand that easily fits into your purse or makeup bag. The cool tip makes it easy to use without burning your fingers and the thermal technology used in the 1-inch barrel allow you to create perfect soft curls without causing too much damage to your hair.

One drawback to this Remington model is that it only has one temperature setting. Like I mentioned before, this works for some hair types but not for all. If your hair is thicker and requires more heat to get it to cooperate, you may need a curler that has a bit more heat control.

Frequently Asked Questions about the Mini Curling Iron

If you still have lingering questions about which mini curling iron is the right styling tool for you and how to travel with hot tools, keep reading to have all of your questions answered.

Can you take a curling iron on an airplane?

Yes, you can take a curling iron on an airplane. One thing I would caution you on is making sure that your curling iron is sufficiently cooled before packing it. You don’t want to burn or melt anything else that’s packed in your suitcase with a hot curler.

What size barrel is best for beach waves?

To create perfect, beachy waves, you’ll want to use a curling iron with a 1-to-2 inch barrel. This will give you loose curls that don’t require much effort on your part. Most of the mini curling irons that I reviewed here are around that size, so you should be able to create a beach wave look with any of the curling irons listed above.

How do you travel with a curling iron?

Finding a small travel hair curler is important, and the products in this post are excellent optons. If you’re traveling internationally, one feature that you want to look out for in a curling iron is that dual voltage that I mentioned earlier. This will keep you from blowing a fuse while you’re abroad. You’ll also want to pack an international adapter because chances are the plug on the curling iron won’t match the international plug in the wall. If you’re traveling to a foreign country, you should already have an adapter to charge your phone, so you can use the same adapter for your curling iron.

We hope you found this blog post about the mini curling iron helpful! Please share with your friends on Facebook, Twitter, and Pinterest!

During their evaluations, our Beauty Lab pros assess features like preheat time, temperature range, overall settings and ease of use. We also had a panel of at-home testers try the irons at home and report back on factors such as the lasting power of the resulting curls and ease of use. All told, our scientists and beauty pros parsed through more than 103 test measurements and 836 survey answers to find the only curling irons worth your money.

For more information on what to keep in mind as you shop for a curling iron (including material, barrel size, temperature and more), scroll to the bottom of this article. In the meantime, these are our reviews of the best curling irons you can buy.

For a classic clamp curler, give the highest-temp Ion a whirl — it came out on top in our tests for forming lasting curls, even on coarse, thick hair. This iron blew away the competition, scoring highest in nearly a dozen categories including grip and maneuvering, easy controls, compact size and producing curls that stay put.

Users loved that "that the clamp is as long as the barrel," which is particularly useful for shorter hair, and the shorter handle length "keeps my hand in a perfect position to reach the thumb grip," although it may get a bit hot when set up to the highest temperature.

In Lab testing, we also found that it took longer than other curlers to reach the highest temperature (160 seconds), so just be sure to give it ample time to heat up before styling.

Though we haven't put this pick to the test in the Lab yet, you can't beat the price of this classic and well-loved curling iron. Its bargain price is a huge selling point, and Amazon reviewers swear it's a worthy investment. It has adjustable heat and a ceramic coating, and for the price, it's a solid choice — just ask the 52,000+ five-star reviewers who say it works great on fine and thick hair alike .

"The adjustable temperature settings provide flexibility, allowing me to choose the heat level that works best for my hair type," says one Amazon reviewer. "Whether my hair is fine or thick, I can achieve the perfect balance of heat without causing excessive damage." At such a bargain price, it may not last last you for years and years, but it still does the job just fine.

You don't have to sacrifice perfectly styled hair when you travel: This pint-sized favorite features a 1 ¼" barrel and has all the features of the brand's top-performing original curling iron , just in a more portable package.

Though we haven't tested this one in-Lab, the brand claims it heats up in 30 seconds, and we love that it has a swivel cord and adjustable temperature settings. It weighs in at just over 6 ounces, which makes it perfectly portable too. Keep in mind the shorter barrel is best-suited for short hair, though it'll work on any length with a bit more effort.

Created by hairstylist Sarah Potempa, this time-saving, automated curling iron is the only one GH Beauty Director April Franzino uses. "It rotates away from your face , taking the guesswork out of curling hair, " she says. "All you have to do is clamp a section of hair at the bottom, press the button and watch as it winds around the curler. Hold for a few seconds, release and you have a perfect loose curl."

Other beauty pros at GH similarly love this tool. Lab testers noted that "it grips hair well," and the resulting "curls are well-defined and stay in place" for "beautiful, natural looking curls in no time." There's a bit of a learning curve, though, and it's best for long hair; testers with short hair found the small clip difficult to use.

Sick of running out of space on your wand to curl your long hair, or having to wrap hair multiple times over itself? This tool works especially well for longer hai r tha nks to the extended length of the barrel, which the brand claims is two inches longer than most curling irons with a clamp that runs nearly the full length of the barrel as well for fast, easy styling.

Though we haven't tested this pick in the Lab, fans love that their style lasts for hours, with one reviewer saying her "curls last the whole day and I still can have loose curls the next day." While we think the long barrel is a brilliant solution for those with long hair, it may not be best-suited for those with shorter hair — and the long barrel can take some getting used to at first, too.

This clever iron is actually three tools in one: A flat iron, a curling wand and a curling iron. The 1 ¼-inch barrel is perfect for glam waves and curls, and our short-haired testers particularly loved it, saying "it was easy to maneuver and keep from touching the face or scalp, " and that it felt the safest of all options with a low burn risk.

In Lab tests, it scored in the middle of the pack in everything from ease of use to performance to user satisfaction. While short barrel and compact design makes it foolproof to use on shorter tresses (and the perfect size for travel, too), the tool may be too short to use effectively on longer hair.

Twirl Trio Interchangeable Clip Curling Iron Set

Get the impact of three separate tools in one neat package: This interchangeable iron comes with three barrel sizes ranging from 1 inch to 1 ½ inches, with even more barrels available for separate purchase including tapered barrels. Testers found the interchangeable mechanism and lock impressive, saying "the barrels did not wobble once locked in," but switching the barrels takes some getting used to.

This pick scored highly in our Beauty Lab tests for long-lasting curls and easy release of hair without pulling or snagging for super smooth styling, which is always a plus, but it comes at a high price — this pick is among the most expensive on our list.

Scoring tops for easy maneuverability and ergonomic design, this curling iron is great for beginners — plus, it won't break the bank for first-time users. Testers loved that "the clamp is long and clips hair well; it does not pinch it at the end," making it easy to use for novices.

At 0.9 pounds, testers also found it lightweight and easy to control with "a classic design, simple and functional," though the temperature is controlled via dial instead of specific buttons, and it lacks an alert when it reaches temperature. Its slimmer-than-average handle is comfortable to hold. It's also the go-to curling iron for many of salon pros we spoke with: "I use Hot Tools curling irons both at home and in salon," says Toye. We just wish it had an audible indicator when it reached temperature.

This solid iron scored high in ease of use, performance and satisfaction in our tests and earned the highest mark of all irons for creating curls that lasted throughout the day, which is perfect for thick hair that might typically be resistant to holding a style . It scored highest for releasing hair from the clamp without snagging or pulling hair, including a perfect score for its clamp.

Testers said, "the barrel is smooth and clip works well," though some found the thumb clamp tricky to press. This iron also reaches the highest temperature that we tested, a whopping 450ºF which is ideal for forming long-lasting curls in even thick, coarse, natural textured or hard-to-curl hair.

Fine hair is fragile and can be difficult to curl for fear of breakage, as well as its tendency to fall flat. That's why this iron from Revlon is a great pick for those with thin hair: Its adjustable temperature reaches the lowest setting in our roundup at 225ºF , and it still performed toward the top of the pack for long-lasting curls and curling without snagging.

It scored high for ergonomics and intuitiveness, and our Lab pros found it had good instructions that may be helpful for fine haired users to prevent over-experimentation (a.k.a. increased risk of damage). One downfall: we wish the cord was longer for easier styling. At under six feet, it makes maneuvering the tool a little difficult.

FHI Heat Heat Platform Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron

Heat Platform Tourmaline Ceramic Curling Iron

Another top performer in Lab tests, this pick performed well across the board, scoring highest in speed of styling , as well as top ranks for consumer satisfaction, even despite what some called "poor button placement ." Testers noted that it heated up fast loved how speedy it was when styling: “It worked super-fast and my curls were locked in all day, which is hard to achieve with my heavy, straight hair." Others said hair was "noticeably shiny and a little less frizzy.”

Drybar Mixologist Interchangeable Styling Iron

Mixologist Interchangeable Styling Iron

While we haven't formally tested this exact model in the Lab yet, Drybar's curling wand has performed well in our Lab tests, so it's no surprise this three-in-one pick is a fan favorite.

It has three useful attachments for all of your curling needs and then some: A 1-inch wand for undone beach waves, a 1 ¼-inch curling iron for polished curls and a three-pronged waver for messy texture. Plus, the clamp on the curling iron is heated so you can also use the larger barrel as a wand or a smoothing flat iron, of sorts.

One GH editor who has tried it says, "the mechanism to switch the attachments is easy to use and feels secure and safe, while the display is bright and the rubberized buttons are intuitive and simple to press." While she wishes there was a better kickstand to keep the heating element from resting on the counter, she adds the tool does heat up quickly on every mode and every barrel is smooth and snag-free for glossy, smooth styling.

Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler

Airwrap Multi-Styler

Our Beauty Lab pros love the Dyson Airwrap: Like a hair dryer and curling iron in one, this high-tech styling tool uses six powerful streams of hot or cool air to magically style your hair from damp to dry.

"I admire the genius air jet design, which makes hair strands, as if by magic, wrap themselves around the curler attachment ,” says Birnur Aral, Ph.D. , executive director of the GH Beauty Lab. The result: Bouncy bends that rival a professional blowout. "It gives salon-level styling using lower heat, which can minimize damage as well," she explains.

But all of this innovation comes with a sky-high sticker price. If it means you're able to swap out your hair dryer, flat iron and curling tools for one item, though, we think it's justifiable. You can also opt for sets that target different hair types and textures, including long or short barrel sets, and attachments for kinky hair.

ghd Classic Curl Curling Iron

Classic Curl Curling Iron

This sleek one-inch model has universal voltage and earned dozens of raves with reviewers, including those with thin hair. "I have fine hair and it is wonderful to find a curling iron that actually does what I need it to," one Nordstrom reviewer said. We haven't Lab-tested this iron, but it's a consistent top-seller with a cult following (and a GH beauty editor fave!).

While no heat tool can be "damage-free," in our Beauty Lab's test of flat irons , we found that ghd's tools maintained a steady temperature of 365º which helps prevent excessive heat damage, unlike other models that can exceed 450º, so we expect the brand's curling iron to perform similarly. The downside, though, is that a single temperature may not suit all different hair types, textures and thicknesses.

How we test curling irons

ghi testing best curling irons

In the Good Housekeeping Institute Beauty Lab, we test curling irons for factors such as speed of preheat, whether the tools actually heat up to (or exceed) the temperature settings indicated on the tool and whether other parts of the iron get hot to the touch.

We also have a panel of testers try them out at home and report back on how well the curling irons create curls, how long the curls last and how easy and comfortable the tools are to use.

To put together this list of the best curling irons on the market, our scientists and beauty pros parsed through over 103 test measurements and 836 survey answers . We also consulted hairstylists and our own beauty editors for additional insight on what makes the best hair tool, and considered online reviews and recommendations from GH staffers.

How to find the right curling iron for your hair

linebreak

There are a few features and considerations you'll want to look for to ensure you're choosing the right curling iron for your hair type and goals. Here's what to keep in mind as you get started with shopping:

✔️ Barrel size: "Depending on the texture of the hair and the type of curl you are looking for, then you would determine which size barrel to use," says Toye. If you want relaxed, beachy waves, reach for a larger barrel (1 ¼-inch and above). The smaller the barrel, the tighter the curl will be. If your hair is hard to curl, look for a 1-inch barrel for a curl that is less likely to fall flat through the day. Want a do-it-all size? "A curling iron with a 1 ¼ inch barrel is a good size for everyday curls, no matter what look you are going for," says Toye.

✔️ Material: The GH Beauty Lab has found both ceramic and titanium curling irons are good conductors of heat and will work on all hair types, so try not to get persuaded by marketing claims that state one is better than the next. Toye, however, says that stylists tend to opt for titanium irons, since he finds they are lighter-weight than ceramic and can more effectively hold high temperatures, although ceramic irons can be more user-friendly due to their ability to evenly distribute heat.

✔️ Clamp : For ultimate versatility, look for an extended clip that spans the full length of the barrel. This way, the curling iron can also be used to somewhat smooth hair too, if you need. Some models can be used as wands by wrapping hair over the clip for looser curls and waves. "Clamps tend to leave marks in the hair if they are not properly used," says Toye, which is why some "prefer a clamp-less wand: because it is more user-friendly." ✔️ Adjustable heat settings : "I recommend a curling iron with adjustable heat settings," says Toye. Lower temps are great for fine hair for those thinner hairs around the face, while higher temps are great for coarse, natural or hard-to-curl hair. As a rule of thumb, our Beauty Lab experts say you should use low heat on fine, chemically processed or fragile hair (180ºF to 370ºF); medium heat on easy-to-curl, healthy hair (375ºF to 395ºF); and high heat on thick, wavy or natural hair (400ºF to 420ºF).

✔️ Cord : It might not seem important, but a good cord can make or break the styling experience. A professional-length cord on a curling iron is nine feet long — anything shorter may make it difficult to maneuver when styling. We also love a swivel mechanism, which prevents the cord from getting tangled or wrapped up as you style.

✔️ Automatic shut-off : Our testers love irons with an auto shut-off feature. You'll never have to worry about remembering to unplug your curling iron because it shuts off for you.

What curling iron do stylists use?

linebreak

There's a lot of debate around whether ceramic or titanium is better for heat styling tools, but when it comes to the in-salon choice, Toye says, " Titanium would be the most preferred by stylists , and tourmaline and ceramic are more popular among the average consumer.

Why? He explains that titanium barrels are usually lighter than ceramic and can hold high temperatures longer, while ceramic barrels distribute heat more evenly and are less likely to damage hair, so they are more suitable for at-home consumers with different hair textures.

Keep reading for a more detailed review of each travel curling iron, if you can bring a curling iron in carry on luggage, and info for international travel needs.

Can you Bring a Mini Curling Iron on a Plane?

According to the TSA, in the USA you can bring your mini curling iron on a plane in your carry on luggage or checked baggage. The only caveat for carry on baggage is that it’s a travel curling iron with an electric cord, not butane powered.

Can I Pack my Travel Curling Iron in Carry on Luggage? The Answer is Yes.

All of our recommendations below are for travel curling irons that are allowed in your carry on in the USA. Outside of the USA, I’m not sure. I strongly suggest checking the rules for the country you’re flying to for their rules on hair styling tools.

Dual Voltage Curling Iron for International Travel

You can skip this section and scroll down if you’re traveling domestically within North America.

If you’re traveling internationally, you may need a dual voltage curling iron. Seven of the ten curling irons we reviewed are dual voltage curling irons, so please take this into consideration if you’re traveling outside of North America.

1 inch travel curling iron

It’s also a good idea to check on the plug type of the country you’re traveling to. Your new travel curling iron may need a special adapter, in addition to being dual voltage, to be used outside of North America.

Below are a few examples of the plug type, voltage, and adapter type for hair styling tools a North American would need for travel to the below countries. The plug type and adapter type are from the International Electrotechnical Commission and are consistent throughout the world.

If the country you’re traveling to isn’t listed, just Google the country you’re traveling to and what voltage and plug type they use. If the voltage is above 127, you will need a dual voltage curling iron. If the plug type is other than A or B, you will need an adapter.

And now, let’s get to the travel curling iron reviews…

Encouraging fine hair to hold a curl is famously tricky, and the best curling irons for fine hair are designed with appropriate heat settings (read: low) to get the job done. “People with fine hair need to be very careful when working with a curling iron,” says Sharron Doram, celebrity colorist. “The most important thing is not to overexpose the hair to heat.” Our top pick for fine hair, the T3 SinglePass Curling Iron , features nine heat settings and has a ceramic barrel for fast, efficient styling and lasting results.

The best curling irons for fine hair provide damage-free styling and lasting results.

Before making a purchase, consider the heat settings, materials, barrel size and price. All of our experts recommend a ceramic barrel for fine hair, as this material distributes heat more evenly and prevents hot spots that may damage strands. Below are the best curling irons for fine hair, along with shopping advice from a variety of experts.

The Forbes Vetted team dubbed the T3 SinglePass our top luxury pick in our roundup of the best curling irons , and the latest model manages to improve on the original. It has nine settings for precise heat control and an extra-long ceramic barrel that allows for a range of styling techniques. An updated clip design gives the iron a super smooth glide and minimizes the potential for clamp marks, which can be an issue with fine hair. This model has the brand’s trademarked CeraGloss ceramic barrel to ensure even heat with no hot or cold spots for fast, one-pass styling. That minimizes heat exposure and helps ensure lasting curls, even on fine hair.

Best Value Curling Iron For Fine Hair

An affordable tool with double the ceramic coating, conair double ceramic 1-inch curling iron.

Plate material:  Ceramic |  Barrel sizes:  0.5 inch, 0.75 inch, 1 inch, 1.25 inches, 1.5 inches |  Temperature:  260 to 400 degrees Fahrenheit |  Heat-up time:  Instant | Weight:  15.2 ounces |  Cord length:  5 feet |  Warranty:  2 years

This classic curling iron from Conair has double the ceramic content for more even heat distribution, faster styling, anti-frizz control and longer-lasting curls, according to the brand. It has 30 heat settings, including a max temperature of 375 degrees and a Turbo Heat feature that adds a burst of extra heat-up by 27 degrees. Other bells and whistles include instant heat-up, a cool tip to make styling easier and recessed buttons so you don’t accidentally turn it off while you’re using it. The best part? It’s priced around $20, which is a fraction of the cost of others on our list.

Best Curling Iron For Short, Fine Hair

A versatile iron for styling curls and waves on short hair, kristin ess ceramic curling iron.

Plate material:  Ceramic |  Barrel sizes:  1 inch, 1.25 inches |  Temperature:  325 degrees to 425 degrees Fahrenheit |  Heat-up time:  60 seconds |  Weight:  2 pounds | Cord length:  9 feet |  Warranty:  2 years

Use this versatile curling iron to style beachy waves and curls on shorter hairstyles, including pixies, lobs and bobs. The ceramic barrel helps retain moisture and closes the hair cuticle for smooth, shiny strands. Plus, it makes it easy to slide the iron through ends without snagging fine hair or leaving lines. The tool has a digital display with four temperature presets (325, 365, 400 and 425 degrees Fahrenheit), an automatic shut-off feature and negative ion technology for frizz-free styling. Keep in mind that this option is a bit heavier than others on our list.

Best Curling Iron For Long, Fine Hair

A lightweight, rotating pick that's easy to use, beachwaver b1 rotating curling iron.

Plate material:  Ceramic |  Barrel sizes:  0.75 inch, 1 inch, 1.5 inches | Temperature: 290 to 410 degrees Fahrenheit |  Heat-up time:  45 seconds |  Weight:  16 ounces | Cord length:  8 feet |  Warranty:  1 year

The Beachwaver B1 is a rotating curling iron, which means it does most of the work for you—a particularly helpful feature if you have long hair. Two arrow buttons rotate the barrel in either direction for easy styling, while a signature beveled, one-inch clamp ensures smooth curling and no kinks or dents as you curl. The ceramic iron has three heat settings to suit different hair types: high (410 degrees), medium (350 degrees) and low (290 degrees). It’s also lightweight, which gives your arms a break while you work through all that hair.

Best Curling Wand For Fine Hair

A tapered, oval barrel that won't scorch delicate strands, ghd classic wave hair curling wand.

Plate material:  Ceramic |  Barrel size:  1.5 inches |  Temperature:  365 degrees Fahrenheit |  Heat-up time:  25 seconds |  Weight:  14.4 ounces |  Cord length:  6 feet | Warranty:  2 years

This curling wand skips the temperature dial completely. Instead, it’s designed to heat up to 365 degrees Fahrenheit for what the brand calls optimal styling—hot enough to style without causing damage, even for fine strands. The 1.5-inch ceramic barrel has an oval shape for a loose, modern wave and a protective cool tip that makes it easier to twist strands around the barrel. The iron comes with a safety stand and a protective glove, too.

Imagine if you could transform your hair into bouncy, voluminous curls with the press of a button. Spoiler: You can. Rotating curling irons are the hair tools of the future. These innovative devices make styling hair a breeze (sometimes literally), thanks to their ability to instantly and automatically create curls. How do they do it, you ask? Some rotating curling irons utilize airflow (think: the Dyson Airwrap), while others effortlessly twist hair around a barrel. No matter how they work, the results are always the same: Luscious, full curls .

However, finding the right rotating curling iron is no easy feat. The sheer number of devices on the market is overwhelming, to say the least. Luckily, we did the hard work for you. We put 32 top-rated curling irons through rigorous tests in our lab, trying them on different hair types and carefully examining their ease of use, the amount of tension the clamps had on hair, their value, and their overall performance. After sifting through the results, we were able to uncover the 14 best rotating curling irons.

Best Overall

Prizm wavy professional rotating curling iron.

  • Ease of Use 4.7 /5
  • Clamp Tension 5 /5
  • Performance 5 /5

This curling iron has 11 different temperature settings that range from 250 to 450 degrees.

Some customers note that their curling irons unexpectedly broke after about six months of use.

If you’re looking for a curling iron that will quickly, effectively, and effortlessly style your hair, look no further than this Prizm favorite. Complete with a 1-inch titanium barrel, this rotating curling iron works fast to produce bouncy curls in mere minutes. The high tech iron heats up to 450 degrees in less than 35 seconds and features 11 different temperature settings that you can adjust based on your hair type . It also has two clearly labeled buttons – L and R that determine which direction the iron rotates – making the device simple and convenient to use.

Aside from being easy to use, this hot tool also provides hair with gorgeous, voluminous curls. “My curls turned out very nice: They are well-defined and bouncy,” says our tester. “I could easily brush the curls to get beachy waves if I wanted to as well.” Additionally, thanks to the titanium nano material that the barrel is made with, this tool produces negative ions, which enhance shine and help lock in moisture. As for the cherry on top: This tool has a one-hour automatic shut-down, which means you won’t have to worry if you accidentally leave it on.

It’s worth noting that though the iron worked perfectly in our test, some online reviews claim that the tool broke after six months of use. These instances seem to be few and far between, so we still recommend the iron for its unbeatable price and gorgeous results.

Best Luxury

T3 twirl 360 curling iron.

This hot tool uses what’s called gyroscopic technology – a smart feature that detects the motion of your hand to automatically propel the barrel in the right direction.

There’s definitely a learning curve when it comes to using this tool properly.

There’s no other way to say it: The T3 Twirl Auto-Rotating Curling Iron is one of a kind. This innovative tool utilizes gyroscopic technology, which is a fancy way of saying that it curls your hair for you. Here’s the scoop: The iron can sense the motion of your hand. Once it knows which way you’re trying to curl your hair (either way from your face or toward your face), it automatically adjusts its settings. “This tool is so smart — there's only one button to rotate, and it determines which way with the flick of a wrist. I like that because it ensures you don't accidentally press the wrong button and end up curling your hair the wrong way,” our tester says.

The result of this smart technology? Luscious, bouncy curls. Plus, thanks to the 1¼ -inch barrel, you can achieve a variety of curl styles (like loose waves , ribbon curls, and more), no matter what length your hair is. On top of that, it has two different rotating speeds, so you can adjust it according to your preference.

Although we love this tool, it’s worth noting that it’s not totally intuitive to use unless you read the manual, so make sure you take the extra few minutes flipping through the instructions to have the most seamless experience.

Barrel Size: 1¼ -inch | Heat Settings: up to 410 degrees | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Speeds: 2

Best Budget

Maikcq rotating curling iron.

  • Ease of Use 4 /5
  • Clamp Tension 4.5 /5
  • Performance 4.7 /5

This curling iron comes with a special comb-like attachment that can be used to brush through hair to achieve loose, frizz-free waves.

This tool is only recommended for people with long- and medium-length hair.

Effortless curls are just minutes away when you have this affordable beauty tool. Complete with a ceramic tourmaline barrel that reduces heat damage, seals in moisture, and lessens frizz, this rotating curl iron is all you need to achieve a curly hairstyle.

What we love most about this curling iron is that it’s extremely easy to use: It has two buttons on the handle (one with an arrow pointing to the right and another with an arrow pointing to the left) that turn the barrel in your desired direction. It also has an LCD screen that allows you to see what temperature the tool is at (there are three different temperature settings; low, medium, and high). But, what really sets this device apart is its special brush attachment. This handy tool can be clipped right onto the barrel and used to comb through hair after curling it. The results? Defined, wave-like curls.

However, it’s worth noting that the brand only recommends this tool for people with long- and medium-length hair because of its short clamp. “I wish the clamp was a little longer,” our tester says. “Since the clamp is shorter I had to be really careful to not burn my head with the top of the iron.” Overall, this curling iron is great for anyone with shoulder-length hair or longer who wants gorgeous, shiny curls.

Barrel Size: 1¼ -inch | Heat Settings: 410 degrees | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Speed: 1

Most Versatile

Shark flexstyle system.

  • Clamp Tension 4.7 /5
  • Performance 4.1 /5
  • Value 4.4 /5
  • Styling Ability 4.8 /5

This tool features a cool shot, which helps set and define curls.

You have to switch out the barrel depending on which way you want to curl your hair.

This cutting-edge hair tool is ultra-versatile, giving users the option to switch between different attachments based on what kind of hairstyle they want to achieve. Choose between a slew of stylers including a handful of brushes (complete with round, oval, and paddle options), as well as a curl diffuser, style concentrator, and wide-tooth comb. Plus, you can also choose two auto-wrap curlers, which are our personal favorites.

These feature the same Coanda airflow technology as the Dyson Airwrap, which instantly wraps hair around the barrel of the curler. Since it utilizes high-speed air instead of high temperatures (like traditional hot tools), hair is exposed to less heat damage, if any at all. And, even though it doesn’t use high heat, it’s still able to create bouncy, long-lasting curls thanks to its cool shot feature, which helps set and define hair.

The only thing we will point out is that this device comes with two different curling barrels that can only curl hair in one direction (one curls hair to the left and the other curls hair to the right). This means you will have to swap out the barrel if you want to switch the direction of your curls. However, it’s really easy to change between attachments, so this shouldn’t be too much of a hassle.

Barrel Size: 1¼ -inch | Heat Settings: up to 203 degrees | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Speeds: N/A

Best For Beginners

Beachwaver co. rotating curling iron.

  • Ease of Use 3.5 /5
  • Clamp Tension 4 /5
  • Performance 3 /5

This tool features a ceramic barrel with full-length internal heaters that evenly distribute heat from the top to the bottom.

The iron automatically shuts down after 30 minutes, so if it takes you longer than that to curl your hair, you will have to turn it back on.

Curling your hair isn’t always an intuitive process (even with a rotating curling iron). Luckily, this smart tool from Beachwaver simplifies the process. “All you have to do is place a one-inch piece of hair under the clamp and hit the button signifying the direction you'd like the curl to go,” our tester explains. Then, it does the rest for you!

Made with a one-inch ceramic barrel that heats up in under one minute, and a small grip clamp that effortlessly holds hair in place while it curls, this iron reduces the time it takes to style your hair. “Though the clamp is small, it manages to hold long hair securely in place while the iron does its job. There’s no tugging, and it releases hair pretty easily, too,” our tester adds. We appreciate that there are two curling speeds, too (fast and slow), so you can adjust it to your liking.

Overall, this tool is ideal for anyone who wants bouncy curls without the hassle. Plus, it’s great for people who want to experiment with a range of hairstyles. “The beauty with this tool is that you're able to create different types of curls depending on how you clamp, how long you hold the iron to the hair, and the direction it rotates,” our tester explains. To try out different styles, head to the brand’s website — they’ve compiled a variety of videos that showcase dozens of ways to use the curler.

Barrel Size: 1 inch | Heat Settings: 410 degrees | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Speeds: 2

Best For Loose Curls

The farrah rotating curling iron.

This styler doesn’t have a clamp; instead, it uses smart technology to wrap hair from the top of the head down to the ends.

This tool doesn’t show the temperature.

If there’s one hairstyle every beauty buff has strived to achieve at some point in their lives, it’s loose curls. These kinds of curls always appear to be natural, chic, and ultimately effortless. However, for some people, they’re often the most difficult style to create. Luckily, there’s a tool that’ll give you loose curls with ease: The farrah Rotating Curling Iron.

This sleek tool features a one-inch barrel that tames frizz and adds shine, thanks to the ceramic coating. It also has a rotating barrel that doesn’t feature a clamp, which can be easier for beginners to use. Smart technology wraps the hair itself, starting from the top of the head and working its way down towards the ends. (Essentially, to use this tool, hold it next to a one-inch section of hair, starting at the top. Press the button to curl hair, and slowly pull the device down to your ends. Voilà! Effortless curls.)

We will note that you can’t see the actual temperature of the tool, rather, a little LED light will illuminate when it’s at 250, 300, 350, 400, or 450 degrees. “It would be more convenient if there was a display box to show the actual temperature in numbers instead of a range,” our tester says.

Barrel Size: 1 inch | Heat Settings: up to 450 degrees | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Speeds: 1

Best For Frizz

Tymo hair curling wand.

  • Ease of Use 4.5 /5
  • Performance 4 /5

This curler comes with everything you could ever need, including a travel bag, heat-resistant glove, and two hair clips.

This iron doesn’t show what temperature it’s at.

Made with a titanium barrel, this curling iron releases negative ions that penetrate the hair, nourishing it from the inside out. These negative ions also seal hair follicles and lock in moisture, ultimately taming and lessening frizz. Aside from the fact that it dramatically reduces static and frizz, we also love that the iron has a handful of great features that make it ideal for anyone to use, from beginners to pros.

For starters, the small clamp firmly holds hair while it rotates; the rotation buttons are easy to recognize and smoothly wrap hair; and there are five different temperature settings (from 280 degrees to 430 degrees), which allow you to adjust the iron to your desired heat. We will note that you can’t actually see the temperature the tool is set to. Rather, it has five lights that indicate which level the tool is set to. To finish it all off, it heats up in under one minute and automatically shuts off after one hour.

Barrel Size: 1 ¼ -inch | Heat Settings: 430 degrees | Barrel Material: Titanium | Speeds: 1

Best For Fine Hair

Bio ionic rotating styling iron.

  • Ease of Use 5 /5

This iron has a large clamp that securely holds strands and doesn’t tug or pull hair.

It takes about three minutes for the tool to heat up, which is longer than it takes most curling irons.

As someone with fine, flat hair , I know firsthand the struggle of attaining bouncy, well-defined curls. Luckily, this rotating curler has changed the game. It has a one-inch iron barrel that easily wraps around thin hair in seconds. The barrel is the ideal size for achieving voluminous curls that are not too loose or too tight – AKA the perfect happy medium. Additionally, it’s made from iron, which helps reduce frizz while also adding moisture to strands. (I’ve noticed that my hair is much shinier when I use this tool as opposed to others.)

As someone who prefers using a curling iron as opposed to a wand, I really enjoy the large clamp that this tool has. It securely holds my thin hair in place while it rotates, and it doesn’t leave crimps or bumps. Another underrated feature: It has a nine-foot swivel cord that makes maneuvering this curler around your head a breeze.

While this isn’t a huge deal, it takes about three minutes for the iron to fully heat up, which is much longer than the other tools we tested. Keep this in mind if you’re trying to quickly style your hair before heading out.

Barrel Size: 1 inch | Heat Settings: 440 degrees | Barrel Material: Iron | Speeds: 1

Best For Thick Hair

Lyealion interchangeable hair curling wand.

This tool beeps when the curl is ready to be released, ultimately taking out the guesswork and preventing hair from burning.

The rotate and release buttons are really close to each other, so you have to make sure you do not press the rotate button if you are trying to release your curl.

If you have thick hair and are looking to experiment with different curl sizes, this hot tool will give you all the freedom and flexibility you want. It comes with three barrel heads (complete with barrel sizes that are ¾ -inch, 1-inch, and 1 ¼-inch wide) that are easy to change between.

These varying barrels can create a range of curls, including big, beachy waves, soft curls, light waves, and tight ringlets. Beyond the interchangeable barrels, another cool feature ensures you achieve the style you want: The iron beeps when each ringlet is ready to be released, guaranteeing even heat distribution and preventing damage.

As for the best part? This product comes with a wide-tooth comb, a heat-resistant glove, three hair clips, 24 small claw clips, and a box to store everything in, so you have everything you need when you’re ready to style. Honestly, the only thing we’d change is the placement of the curling buttons in relation to the release button — they’re very close to each other and can be mistaken for each other. As you get to know the device this will be less likely to happen, but it takes some getting used to.

Barrel Sizes: ¾ -inch, 1 inch, 1 ¼-inch | Heat Settings: 450 degrees | Barrel Material: Ceramic | Speeds: 1

Best Air Technology

Dyson airwrap.

This tool can be used on wet hair because it simultaneously dries while styling.

There’s a bit of a learning curve that comes with using this curling iron.

Ah, the Dyson Airwrap . We couldn’t have a list of the best rotating curling irons without this innovative device. Compared to other tools on our list, this one uses very little heat to curl hair, which means your strands are at less risk of being exposed to heat damage. (This ultimately means less breakage, frizz, and dryness.)

Despite the lack of heat, curls maintain shape because Dyson uses what’s called the Coanda Effect. This so-called ‘effect’ is essentially an aerodynamic phenomenon where the tool is able to create a spinning vortex of air that allows hair to easily wrap around it. From there, a beautiful curl is created.

The device ultimately comes with six attachments, but two specifically to curl hair. “The larger barrel results in loose/wavy curls similar to a blowout, while the smaller barrel results in more bounce and wavy curls,” explains our tester. Once she got the hang of using the Airwrap, she says styling was a breeze, but she did experience a bit of a learning curve. “The directions were certainly helpful, however, it took me a moment to find my footing,” she explains. “It was hard to identify the settings once the tool was wrapped in my hair, but I think if you owned the tool and had more practice this would be easier to navigate.”

This little device is extremely lightweight and portable.

This tool curls strands tightly, which means you might feel a light tug on your scalp.

If you’re someone who’s constantly on the go, you need a product that can keep up with your lifestyle. It’s hard to compete with a cordless iron that works, and we found that none compare to the Conair Unbound Cordless Auto-Curler. It’s small, lightweight, and portable, which means you can curl your hair from literally anywhere. Just charge the device before you use it (it comes with a charging cord), and then you have one hour to curl all the hair you want.

To use, simply insert a section of hair into the chamber, press the ‘on’ button, and watch as it magically styles your strands into “perfect ringlets,” according to our tester. (Once your hair is ready to be released, you’ll hear two beeps.) Plus, you can customize the heat settings – there are four different settings that range from 300 to 400 degrees – as well as the amount of time you want your hair to curl. As a bonus, you can also select which direction you want your curl to go in.

We will say that it curls pieces pretty tightly, and can sometimes tug at the hair, but our tester says this sensation isn't painful. Overall, we find that this device is easy and fast, and it creates long-lasting curls.

Best Manual Rotating Curling Iron

Amika 3-in-1 rotating curling iron.

This Amika favorite has a long barrel that allows for easy, effortless curling.

There is only one button, and this button controls the temperature and turns the device on and off, which can be problematic if you accidentally turn it off.

OK, so this Amika hair tool is a bit different from the rest. “This curling iron isn't actually an automatic curling iron,” explains our tester. “It can rotate in either direction, but I had to manually curl my hair around the wand.” What this means is that this tool can rotate, but it doesn’t actually rotate hair with it, like the other devices. Because of this, this device is ideal for anyone who wants to test out a curler that’s a bit more advanced than a normal wand. It has two settings: Locked, which makes it act like a normal curling iron, and unlocked, which allows the iron to rotate on an axis.

Aside from the tool’s rotating abilities, this iron also has other impressive features, including its 1.2-inch ceramic barrel that helps to reduce frizz and add shine. Additionally, it has a nine-foot swivel cord, as well as a feature that shuts it down after one hour of use. We will note that this tool only has one button, though. “It has an on/off button that also serves as the toggle button to increase or lower the temperatures,” explains our tester. Because of this, be sure you do not accidentally press the button when you are curling hair since this can cause the device to turn off.

NuMe Automatic Curling Wand

The Nume rotates in both directions making it seamless to get styles that curl towards or away from your face on both sides of your head. The tool is surprisingly lightweight and easy to manuver. The three barrel sizes allowed us to achieve different styles of curls and our hair felt soft and shiny when we were done. We did think the tool had a learning curve and was not instinctual to use. It also is difficult to get volume at the roots.

InStyler Max Prime Rotating Iron

We found this device to be better suited for beachy waves than defined curls, since the wrapping is fairly loose. The tool also only rotates in one direction—simpler to understand yet limits your options. If this is the look you're going for, the tool works as intended. However, if you want a rotating curling iron with more versatility, a different option from our list may be best.

Our Testing Process

To get things started, we researched the bestselling rotating curling irons made by top beauty brands. After reviewing the ratings, we compiled the 32 most popular products and put them to the test. Sixteen testers analyzed the irons in four important categories: Ease of use, the amount of tension the clamp had on hair, the performance of the curler, and the overall value of each product. Once the testers provided their feedback, we were able to narrow down to the 12 best rotating curling irons.

Barrel Size

Just like traditional curling irons, rotating irons come with different barrel sizes. Depending on your hair type and length, you should find a barrel size to meet your needs. “If you have shorter hair or want a tighter curl, you will benefit the most from using a barrel that is one inch or less,” says celebrity hair and makeup artist, Marcia Williams. “Anyone with long hair or who prefers a loose curl, should go for a larger barrel that's 1.25 inches and up.”

Ultimately though, the barrel size you choose depends on the type of curl you want. “The general rule of thumb is that narrow barrels produce very tight, bouncy, spirally, and compact curls; and the opposite is also true. Wider barrels give long and loose curls,” explains hairstylist Viktor Holas. If you want to create a combination of curl styles, opt for a tool with interchangeable barrels, like Lyealion Automatic Hair Curling Wand , which comes with three barrels ranging from ¾ inch to 1 ¼ inches.

Heat Settings

Rotating curling irons offer a wide range of heat settings (like most hot tools). “Before choosing a heat setting on a rotating curling iron, the user must first consider their strand volume, length, and most importantly, hair type,” says Holas. “That way, they are less likely to accidentally damage the hair or get sub-optimal curls.”

Once you know your hair type (whether it’s straight, wavy, curly, or coily) as well as your hair texture (whether it’s fine, medium, or thick), you can determine what temperature you should use your curling iron. “For thin, weak, and fragile hair, the ideal heat setting should be between 200 and 300 degrees. Then, for medium, soft, and normal hair, any temperature between 300 and 380 degrees often gets the job done. Temperatures above 380 to around 450 degrees are ideal for very stubborn hair types (i.e. tough, strong, and wiry),” explains Holas. “To be safe, I (and most hairstylists, in general) always start from the bottom end of the temperature range, and work my way up until I reach the optimal curling temperature for the client's specific hair type.”

The bottom line: It’s important to protect your hair from high temperatures. To do so, be sure you are not curling your hair at a temperature that’s too hot. Additionally, use a heat protectant any time you use a hot tool.

How It Rotates

Generally, there are three different ways rotating curling irons can curl hair. First, there are tools that curl hair at the press of a button (a good majority of the rotating curl irons on this list curl hair in this way, including our best overall pick Prizm Wavy Professional Rotating Curling Iron ). These buttons can usually curl hair towards and away from the face.

On the other hand, some rotating curling irons can curl hair with the help of air technology (like the Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System and the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler ). These tools utilize high-speed airflow to attract the hair to the barrel. From there, this warm air is able to create a curl.

Finally, some rotating curling irons rotate based on the flick of the user’s wrist. These kinds of tools (like the T3 Twirl Auto-Rotating Curling Iron ) are great because they ensure you don't accidentally press the wrong button and end up curling their hair in the wrong direction.

Are rotating curling irons worth it?

“Rotating curling irons are great for someone who isn't advanced or has challenges styling their hair,” says Williams. This is because these tools curl your hair for you, which not only makes things easier, but also faster and more efficient.

How do you use a rotating curling iron?

Regardless of how a rotating curling iron operates — whether it be with the push of a button, a flick of your wrist, or with air-flow technology, the process is relatively simple, says celebrity beauty strategist and connector Nina Vargas. For the classic button-operated iron, “prep your hair as normal, place your first section of hair so that the ends are in the clamp, and click the button,” she explains. “At this point, the barrel will begin rotating, wrapping the strand around the barrel and curling your hair with ease. This will not only speed up the curling process and save you from an extra arm workout, but it also makes it easier to achieve uniform, precise curls for that perfect, fresh-from-the-salon look.”

For the tools that use airflow technology (like the Dyson Airwrap Multi-Styler or Shark FlexStyle Air Styling & Drying System ), simply place your hair near the barrel and the airflow will wrap the strand around on its own, creating a bouncy curl in seconds, sans clamp.

How do rotating curl irons work?

Rotating curling irons are similar to curling irons and straighteners in the sense that they style hair by using heated plates. However, they are different due to the way the barrel works. “Design-wise, [a rotating curling iron] features a cylindrical plate or barrel that spins automatically,” says Holas. Additionally, most rotating curling irons feature clamps that are able to securely hold the hair while the barrel rotates.

Are rotating curling irons safe?

“Yes, they are safe,” says Holas. “ Although, I always advise caution when dealing with heat-based styling tools. It's important to take the necessary steps to ensure you don't get burns or damage your hair unintentionally. To ensure this, always use a suitable heat protectant spray on your hair, wear heat-resistant gloves, and try not to get too close to your skin. And remember, start from lower temperatures and work your way up until you hit the perfect heating level.”

PATTERN Beauty’s New Curling Iron Will Make Your Life Easier

Tracee Ellis Ross is a constant reminder to never limit yourself. The creative chameleon effortlessly oscillates between being a fashion trendsetter and heart-capturing TV actress in timeless sitcoms ( Cue the “Girlfriends” theme song). And when you think that’s enough, she continues to push bounds as both a movie star– including recent roles in American Fiction and Cold Copy– and beauty brand founder of game-changing line, PATTERN .

And after launching her ESSENCE 2024 Best In Beauty award-winning blow dryer last year, it’s only right that she’s creating more hair tools that promise to make our lives easier. For starters, as of today, PATTERN’s new Interchangeable Curling Iron , is available for you to purchase.

As the name suggests, it comes with three different barrel sizes: a ⅜’’, ¾’’, and a 1’’ barrel, so that you can test out different curl widths. And when it came to the inspiration behind the heat damage-conscious, caramel-hued tourmaline iron? “I went through a period of heat damage when I was working on set for Girlfriends ,” she says. “And when I finally nursed my hair back to health, my curl pattern wasn’t exactly the same. There were some curls that were tighter and others that were looser,” Ross adds. “I would use a curling iron to create curl harmony in my hair. And it has been my secret weapon and my secret tool since then.”

Below, Ross discusses in detail her new curling iron, her current beauty practices, and more.

PATTERN Beauty’s New Curling Iron Will Make Your Life Easier

ESSENCE: What inspired you to launch a curling iron?

Tracee Ellis Ross: When I finished the third season of Girlfriends , I looked in the mirror and I was like, oh my God, I don’t feel like Tracee anymore. I feel like Joan. In order to create some differentiation, I went to a stylist and she used a stove iron on my hair. And when she did, she told me my hair would curl back… and no, it did not.

Between the third and fourth seasons of Girlfriends, I went through the devastating journey that so many of us go through where I discovered that my natural pattern was no longer there. There was heat damage and I had to figure out how to nurse my hair back to health, but at the same time go back to the show in July and look cute on TV.

And the stylist on the show at the time, Scott Williams, introduced me to tourmaline professional irons. And I was able to discover, while nursing my hair back to health, a way to not create more hair damage, and actually learn a whole bunch of new styles that looked amazing while still leaning into my natural texture.

I wanted to create an iron that wouldn’t cause the heat damage that we all unfortunately have had the experience of. This one has a low heat setting and a tourmaline iron that is good for even heat distribution, which helps lessen your chances of damage.

What else would you say sets this one apart from others you’ve used?

We solved a lot of the problems that I had with other irons. This iron is obviously quite beautiful. But I’m excited that the barrel itself is tourmaline, which is great for even heat distribution. It also emits ions, which is good for protecting the cuticle of the hair.

The clamp for your thumb often falls off on most irons, this one doesn’t have that problem. The kickstand is also secure. The on-off button is separate from the heat button, so you’re not turning it off accidentally.

It also comes with three different barrels. If you’re somebody like me that sometimes uses all barrels in one hairstyle and you don’t have to have three outlets on your countertop, you can just use your one outlet and switch out the barrels. There’s a swivel cord, too. It will swivel as you move so that you don’t get tangled in it. And last but not least, one of my favorite things is that it’s dual voltage, so you can use it in Europe and not blow it out.

PATTERN Beauty’s New Curling Iron Will Make Your Life Easier

As someone who’s dealt with heat damage, I’m sure you know many people who have had heat damage are now afraid to use heat. What would you say to those people?

I think a lot of people use irons but don’t know how to use them safely. And a lot of people are using irons that are actually not professional grade or are not tourmaline and can perpetuate heat damage.

What I want to remind people, though, is that they have endless possibilities. I want everyone to have access to all of the choices that our hair allows us and that there is a way to play with heat and still enjoy your natural texture. The tools are additives; part of play and exploration and allowing new styles into your repertoire. You have endless possibilities when your hair is in good health.

What are some ways you keep your hair healthy these days? Especially when using heat?

If I’m using heat, either I am leaning into the one-inch barrel on my hair to create what I call my “’70s porn hair,” which is a style I did for my first ever ESSENCE cover. For this, I use the hydration shampoo, intensive conditioner, and the leave-in conditioner. I diffuse my hair and of course use heat protectant first. And then once my hair is dry, I take a small section from the bottom of my hair and I comb it out with either the paddle brush or a rat’s tail comb, and then I use the one-inch barrel. I wrap the hair flat around on the iron. I get to the tip, turn the iron around, spin the iron in the hair, pull it out, and then I let it cool. And then I fluff it out. I wore this style recently for the Television Critics Awards.

Tell us more about how you styled your hair for your first ESSENCE cover

I washed my hair, dried it with a towel, and then braided three big cornrows and put a sponge roller on the end of it. I would put a dryer cap over this to let it dry more.

When I took my hair out, I used a three-quarter inch barrel iron on the end and created a proper barrel curl. And then I pulled my fingers through my hair. I just used heat on the ends.

Styles like this are a reminder to those who think they can’t wear a wash and go, because they don’t have the same curl pattern throughout their hair. With an iron, they can create curl harmony using one or two of the barrel sizes. You can rock a fuller style, while still leaning into your texture, and know what you’re gonna get.

What are your go-to beauty looks right now?

I do have to say that my little slicked-back look is one of my favorite go-tos right now. I am 51 and I love the snatch of the slick back. It makes me feel elegant and bright. Also, my hair grows really quickly and I am gray now. Because I’ve been doing press for American Fiction and been out and about a lot more than normal, I was getting my hair colored every three weeks. But I just recently decided that I need to give my hair a break. I’ve been wearing more wigs. It’s also something that I do for movies, so that I feel like a different person. In both Cold Copy and Candy Cane Lane I used wigs, which felt really fun to just be a different person. And, of course, you can’t go wrong with a red lip.

What are some things you do to feel grounded and confident lately?

I’m a meditator, and so that’s a part of my routine. I also love a bath so much. Sometimes I will start a day with a bath instead of a shower. It helps me relax first and then I get in the shower after. It’s a soft way to start the day.

How do you feel you’ve grown as a founder and person since launching PATTERN five years ago?

I think we’re moving out of being a startup and into being a best in class beauty business. I also decided to take on a co-CEO, which was a really big move and an indication that we had scaled at a pace and in a way that showed me I needed the support and partnership from somebody else. We complement each other well. I think I’ve grown the most as a CEO because it wasn’t something I had a skill in before.

I think the most exciting part about it all is the reception of the brand by the customer and the community that we not only serve but are in community with. We’re a mobile first brand, so the ability to stay in constant communication with our customer is exciting and fun. It’s incredibly gratifying to make something and have people receive it. And more than that, I love hearing stories like, “my daughter hated her curls and couldn’t figure out how to wear them until we discovered Pattern.”

The trains and stations of the Moscow Metro

2 Comments · Posted by Alex Smirnov in Cities , Travel , Video

The Moscow Metro is the third most intensive subway system in the world after Tokyo and Seoul subways. The first line was opened on May 15, 1935. Since 1955, the metro has the name of V.I. Lenin.

The system consists of 12 lines with a total length of 305.7 km. Forty four stations are recognized cultural heritage. The largest passenger traffic is in rush hours from 8:00 to 9:00 and from 18:00 to 19:00.

Cellular communication is available on most of the stations of the Moscow Metro. In March 2012, a free Wi-Fi appeared in the Circle Line train. The Moscow Metro is open to passengers from 5:20 to 01:00. The average interval between trains is 2.5 minutes.

The fare is paid by using contactless tickets and contactless smart cards, the passes to the stations are controlled by automatic turnstiles. Ticket offices and ticket vending machines can be found in station vestibules.

Touring the Top 10 Moscow Metro Stations

By Claudia Looi 2 Comments

Komsomolskaya metro station

Komsomolskaya metro station looks like a museum. It has vaulted ceilings and baroque decor.

Hidden underground, in the heart of Moscow, are historical and architectural treasures of Russia. These are Soviet-era creations – the metro stations of Moscow.

Our guide Maria introduced these elaborate metro stations as “the palaces for the people.” Built between 1937 and 1955, each station holds its own history and stories. Stalin had the idea of building beautiful underground spaces that the masses could enjoy. They would look like museums, art centers, concert halls, palaces and churches. Each would have a different theme. None would be alike.

The two-hour private tour was with a former Intourist tour guide named Maria. Maria lived in Moscow all her life and through the communist era of 60s to 90s. She has been a tour guide for more than 30 years. Being in her 60s, she moved rather quickly for her age. We traveled and crammed with Maria and other Muscovites on the metro to visit 10 different metro stations.

Moscow subways are very clean

To Maria, every street, metro and building told a story. I couldn’t keep up with her stories. I don’t remember most of what she said because I was just thrilled being in Moscow.   Added to that, she spilled out so many Russian words and names, which to one who can’t read Cyrillic, sounded so foreign and could be easily forgotten.

The metro tour was the first part of our all day tour of Moscow with Maria. Here are the stations we visited:

1. Komsomolskaya Metro Station  is the most beautiful of them all. Painted yellow and decorated with chandeliers, gold leaves and semi precious stones, the station looks like a stately museum. And possibly decorated like a palace. I saw Komsomolskaya first, before the rest of the stations upon arrival in Moscow by train from St. Petersburg.

2. Revolution Square Metro Station (Ploshchad Revolyutsii) has marble arches and 72 bronze sculptures designed by Alexey Dushkin. The marble arches are flanked by the bronze sculptures. If you look closely you will see passersby touching the bronze dog's nose. Legend has it that good luck comes to those who touch the dog's nose.

3. Arbatskaya Metro Station served as a shelter during the Soviet-era. It is one of the largest and the deepest metro stations in Moscow.

4. Biblioteka Imeni Lenina Metro Station was built in 1935 and named after the Russian State Library. It is located near the library and has a big mosaic portrait of Lenin and yellow ceramic tiles on the track walls.

7. Kurskaya Metro Station was one of the first few to be built in Moscow in 1938. It has ceiling panels and artwork showing Soviet leadership, Soviet lifestyle and political power. It has a dome with patriotic slogans decorated with red stars representing the Soviet's World War II Hall of Fame. Kurskaya Metro Station is a must-visit station in Moscow.
