Record tourism revenue seen

Report estimates 2023 will bring in 21 billion euros, up from €18.17 bln in best-ever 2019.

Record tourism revenue seen

Tourism revenue could reach a record €21 billion in 2023, a National Bank of Greece report estimates.

The final amount will certainly smash the record €18.17 billion receipts of 2019, the final year before the Covid-19 pandemic. While tourism recovered strongly in 2022, after two lean years, revenue, at €17.63 billion, fell short of a new record.

A large part of this higher revenue is due to higher prices caused by inflation that are expected to make up for the slightly shorter duration of visitors’ vacations.

The report makes note of two new trends that could continue in coming years: first, the rise of new tourist destinations, less saturated with visitors, such as Mytilene, capital of the island of Lesvos, and Kavala, a city in mainland northern Greece; second, more intense competition from countries such as Turkey, which increased its share of the Mediterranean holiday market from 19% in 2019 to 22% in 2022, while Greece saw its share stay steady at 13%, and Albania, whose share is still in the low single digits but has increased 24% since 2019.

From March to May, that is, during the off-peak season, tourist arrivals were 10% higher than during the same period in 2022 and revenue up 19%. Visitors from the US accounted for a large part of the gains and their high spending (€1,000 compared to €599 for all visitors) boosted revenue. On the other hand, arrivals from the UK dropped 5% from 2022, as did average spending (€668 from €713).

A significant change was that the tourist period started early in 2023, and the big cities, mainly Athens, benefited. Sales of city hotels rose from 38% of the total in 2019 to 41% in early 2023, while the islands’ share dropped slightly, from 51% to 48%. Athens is no longer merely a transit stop on the way to the islands.

The report notes that while arrivals by air rose 12% year-on-year in June, those on Mykonos and Santorini dropped 7%; arrivals on Mytilene and in Kavala rose above 20%.

The July wildfire in Rhodes could result in a 1% drop in visitors, the report notes, adding that the southeastern Aegean island accounted for 16% of all visitors in 2022 and for 17% of guests at 4 and 5-star accommodation.

Greece's record-breaking year for tourism

Evangelo Sipsas in Athens

greece tourism revenue

Greece had a record-breaking year for tourism in 2023, with revenue figures exceeding those before the pandemic.

Numbers for this year's tourism season are also looking very promising, with some areas already at a high percentage of booking capacity. Hotel owners are hoping to make the experience better for tourists and, in turn, more lucrative for them.

But many didn't expect how busy it would be after the pandemic.

"We saw many people last year, and the season extended until October," hotel owner Giannis Kalamakis told CGTN. "In other years, the season ended by early September. But in 2023, September and October were fully booked, with even some arriving in November, making last year's season longer," he added.

He wasn't alone in being busy – Greece just had its best-ever tourism season. Numbers have surpassed pre-pandemic levels, with an increase in foreign tourism revenues of more than 10 percent compared to 2019, the last record year.

While several Greek islands and the capital Athens were at total full capacity until late October, some visitors also looked to diversify their holidays, creating a new trend.

"We still think about Greece as the Acropolis, the sun, and the beach. But we also see a shift in that," Hellenic Hoteliers Association member Evgenios Vssilikos told CGTN. "People are getting to know new places and not just the very popular places that we've all had in mind for the last 30 years. We see a lot of people trying to shift to something different, something more remote."

The trend for tourists to seek out more authentic and remote places is growing. That's one reason for the increase in the number of tourists visiting Greece to 32 million last year from 27 million in 2022.

But although those numbers seem positive on paper, according to the hotelier's association, they could be problematic.

"We would like to change the quantity into quality," said Vssilikos. "So, maybe the same number of people coming, but having them spend more, rather than having records in quantity, which obviously can create problems in different parts of the city, in different parts of the country, and not give the same experience to the people visiting."

For that to happen, the hoteliers' association wants better infrastructure and more convenient access to sites and museums.

With travel receipts of over $20 billion, 2023 was the best year yet for Greek tourism. While it's only the beginning of the tourism season, bookings are already over 60 percent for the summer in the most popular destinations, pointing to another record-breaking season and making Greece a five-star holiday destination.

Greece’s 2022 Tourism Revenues Set to Exceed Forecasts by €3bn

Year 2022 is expected to close for Greece with tourism revenues exceeding forecasts by 3 billion euro s, said Tourism Minister Vassilis Kikilias .

“The goal set in the government budget last year was for tourism revenues to reach 80 percent of 2019 levels or 15 billion euros . With hard work and against multiple crises, the goal was not only achieved but the year appears to be coming to a close with an additional 3 billion euros,” said Kikilias adding that this was a “great victory”.

In an interview to Real News, Kikilias said he was pleased with this year’s tourism performance , a result, he said, of hard work but also due to the successful extension of the tourism season.

Among others, the minister said travelers are still visiting Greece into December and 11 airlines have agreed to boost flight capacity and destinations for off-season months such as December, January, February and March.

Kikilias went on to refer to the importance of the sector as a key driver of the Greek economy, adding that eight in 10 investments made in Greece are directly or indirectly linked with tourism.

At the same time, said Kikilias, accommodation and restaurant services providers have benefitted from the unprecedented increase in tourist arrivals this year. Citing Hellenic Statistical Authority (ELSTAT) data, Kikilias said that in Q3, turnover for both sectors exceeded 2019 levels marking increases by 22.1 percent for hotels and by 19.8 percent for restaurants.

Additionally, Greece is the number one destination in Europe and at the same time the country marking the fastest recovery, said Kikilias.

Lastly, the minister referred to government measures to support hotel enterprises and SMEs in tourism located in remote areas through a number of programs subsidizing energy and heating oil costs.
