Royal Princess Itineraries

Royal princess review, review of royal princess.

The 2013-built Royal Princess cruise ship is the 1st Royal-class vessel in the Princess Cruises fleet, together with the fleet mates Regal Princess (2014), Majestic Princess (2017), Sky Princess (2019), Enchanted Princess (2021) and Discovery Princess (2022). From the same class is also the P&O UK ship Britannia (2015).

The vessel (IMO number 9584712) is currently Bermuda- flagged (MMSI 310661000) and registered in Hamilton .

History - construction and ownership

Princess Cruises is a USA-based passenger shipping company headquartered in Beverly Hills CA. A former subsidiary of P&O Princess Cruises (1977-founded), in 2003, the company merged with Carnival Corporation - the world's largest cruise shipowner. Among Princess Cruise Lines Ltd's assets is the Caribbean private island resort Princess Cays (on Bahamas Eleuthera Island's southern end), located approx 80 km (50 mi) from Nassau .

Royal Princess cruise ship

The 3600-passenger ship Royal Princess debuted in June 2013 with a series of 12-day Mediterranean voyages out of homeports Barcelona (Spain) and Venice (Italy) . The sistership Regal Princess was inaugurated in May 2014. These ships are among the world's largest passenger ships , being built by Fincantieri Italy. Royal Princess features 17 decks, 14 bars, a large-sized premium Spa, SeaWalk (glass-enclosed walkway). The glass-bottomed SeaWalk offers stunning sea and port views from 128 ft / 39 m above waterline.

An interesting fact is that one of the newest ships of Princess Cruises features in a BBC program - the upcoming ‘Sea Cities’ series. The 3-part documentary based in Southampton UK visits several ports across the United Kingdom to view their events and activities, as well as meet seafarers and staff. Princess Cruises’ Royal Princess appears in ‘Sea Cities: Maritime Liverpool’ episode, highlighting what goes on behind the scenes of the 19-deck cruise vessel during a visit to the city. The 60-minute episode airs on BBC2 on February 18, 2016.

Royal Princess was christened in 2013 by HRH, The Duchess of Cambridge. The ship called in Liverpool 7 times in 2015 on round Britain cruises.

Decks and Cabins

Royal Princess staterooms (1780 total, in 38 categories) include 350 Suites, 1088 Balcony and 342 Inside cabins, in 38 categories. The ship has no Oceanview cabins. Most outside accommodations (1438) have private step-out balconies. The ship also has 36 wheelchair-accessible cabins. The largest are the Balcony Suites (470 ft2 / 44 m2 plus 210 ft2 / 20 m2 terrace).

The boat has 18 decks , of which 15 are passenger-accessible and 8 with cabins.

Shipboard dining options - Food and Drinks

Onboard Royal Princess, there is a big emphasis on dining with a total of 16 spots to eat. For the MDR (main dining room) experience, Royal offers "anytime" and "traditional" evening dining in 3 different restaurant venues. The Allegro offers set-tablemates and set-seating options, while Concerto and Symphony are open seating (between 5:30 p.m. and 10 p.m.). All of the MDRs offer the same menu, with the most special items occurring on formal nights. All the three main dining rooms offer heart-healthy,

Princess Cruises new ship design (Lido restaurant)

Lotus Spa and vegetarian menu items for passengers with dietary restrictions. Food and service are generally excellent at all meals. One of the greatest improvements on Royal Princess is the Horizon Court. The buffet area offers double the number of seats found on Emerald Princess, Ruby Princess and Crown Princess; Royal provides space for 350 outdoors and 900 indoors and also offers a bigger variety of table styles, including 2-tops and bistro-style "counter-height" dining tables.

Follows the complete list of Royal Princess restaurants and food bars.

  • Sabatini’s Restaurant (Italian specialty restaurant, a la carte: offers 3-course Italian/seafood menu; open between 6 p.m. -11 p.m., reservations recommended)
  • Symphony Restaurant (midship location; offers “Anytime Dining” for Dinner; with “Wine Cellar” area serving “Wine Maker’s Dinner” for $40, capacity 12 guests)

  • Horizon Court (self-service buffet restaurant, complimentary); Horizon Buffet and Horizon Terrace

Shipboard entertainment options - Fun and Sport

Royal Princess ship introduces more of an evolution than a revolution for the line. The sole big move forward by the cruise liner, that is being named Royal Princess in tribute to Princess' 1st purpose-built ship, is the innovative SkyWalk, which is a cantilevered, glass-enclosed walkway extending 28 ft/8,5 m beyond the edge of the vessel and 128 ft/39 m over the water. On the opposite side of the deck, the similarly designed 20-seat Seaview bar welcomes those who want to mix vistas with their vodka.

Princess Cruises new ship design (Theater Lounge)

The bulk of performance action takes place in Royal's Princess Theater, situated on decks 6 and 7. The show lounge features palladium-style seating. It's deep, and if you don't arrive early, you might find yourself in the back, which is far from the stage. However, there aren't any obstacles or bad sightlines. The entertainment is excellent and varied, with a beat that is quite innovative. Passengers are entertained while sailing with top-rated production shows performed live in Princess Theater: The Secret Silk (via a partnership with award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz) and Encore (inspired by “Bravo!”, the cruise line’s top-rated show, and accompanied by onstage orchestra). In addition to the production shows, the Princess Theatre hosts other acts including vocalists and instrumentalists.

Follows the complete list of Royal Princess lounges, clubs and other entertainment venues for kids, teens and adults.

Itineraries

Royal Princess itinerary program was initially based on Mediterranean and Caribbean voyages (alternating seasonally) with departures from homeports Fort Lauderdale FL USA, Civitavecchia-Rome , Venice , Barcelona .

In 2019-2020, the ship operated Mexican Riviera roundtrips from Long Beach-Los Angeles CA USA . The new itinerary program included 27x voyages (5-days and 7-days long) visiting Cabo San Lucas , Mazatlan and Puerto Vallarta . All 5-day "Cabo San Lucas Getaway" itineraries were with an overnight in Cabo.

Due to the Coronavirus crisis, the Royal Princess ship was paused for 2+ years (March 2020 thru April 2022). Operations were scheduled to restart on April 8, 2022, with homeporting in Vancouver BC Canada and voyages to Alaska and California. The Alaskan deployment replaced the previously planned Australia-New Zealand 2021-22 winter program (based on homeporting in Sydney NSW ) which was rescheduled for winter 2022-23.

The Fincantieri Monfalcone -built liner debuted in June 2013 with a 2-day maiden voyage from Southampton to Channel Islands ( Guernsey ). This "preview cruise" (itinerary June 9-11, 2013) was roundtrip from Southampton to St Peter Port (Guernsey Island). The “Inaugural Cruise” (maiden voyage) was on June 16 (Mediterranean roundtrip out of Southampton) visiting ports in Portugal and Spain - Vigo , Lisbon , Gibraltar , Malaga , Barcelona .

Princess Cruises Royal-Class ship design

The liner was christened by godmother Kate Middleton (Duchess of Cambridge). The naming ceremony was in  Port Southampton England , held on June 16, 2013. Followed the maiden voyage to Iberia.

Princess Cruises Royal-Class ship design

The vessel's powerplant includes four Wartsila marine diesel engines (model 46F, 2x 12V and 2x 14V) with combined power output 62,4 MW (83,700 hp). The propulsion system is based on two azipods with combined power output 18 MW (24,000 hp).

The ship has Fincantieri Monfalcone yard/hull number 6223, volume 142714 GT-tons, DWT-deadweight tonnage 12512 tons, LOA length 330 m, beam 38 m (max width 47 m/including the Navigation Bridge's wings), max draught 8,6 m.

Fun facts: It takes 3 million man-hours to build a Royal-class liner. For its construction are used 37000 tons of steel. For instance, about 12,000 tons of steel were used for constructing the Disney Concert Hall in Los Angeles . The paint used for the vessel is 95,000 gallons (360,000 L), which is two times more than the quantity consumed for Golden Gate Bridge (re-painted annually). The electrical cables wiring the whole vessel are long 2484 mi (4000 km) which is enough to link  NYC  with  LA .

Royal Princess Overview

Royal Princess  was christened by the lovely and royal Duchess of Cambridge, formerly Kate Middleton. This ship offers many incredible features, most notably the SeaWalk, a glass enclosed hallway that extends 28 feet beyond the edge of the ship giving passengers a spectacular and unobstructed view of the ocean below. Royal Princess features dozens of food options and an area to play bocce ball, croquet and golf, along with an expanded atrium with a tea tower where passengers can brew their own tea blend - a very royal experience, indeed.

  • Passenger Capacity: 3,560 (double occupancy)
  • Year Built: 2013
  • Last Refurbished:  2018

Royal Princess Balcony Stateroom - Princess Cruises

  • Balconies Royal Princess has abolished oceanview cabins. Princess made all of their outside cabins balconies, which gives passengers not only great views of the ports they're in and the oceans they are traversing, but with a balcony you get to experience cruising with all of your senses. You’ll hear the sea birds squaw, you’ll smell the fresh air and feel the breeze on your face. A balcony offers a step up, fit for the Royal Princess’ esteemed passengers.

Royal Princess Atrium - Princess Cruises

  • The Atrium The Royal Princess takes Princess Cruises to a new level. With an expanded size and lots of new features, the design team on the ship reinvented many of Princess’ core features. The Atrium, which is the center piece of the ship, is 50 percent larger than any Atrium before her. The Royal Princess’ Atrium connects three stories of the ship with beautiful staircases and presents the perfect spot to grab a cup of coffee or catch an interactive show.

Princess Cruises' Royal Princess

  • Godmother To honor the Royal Princess , none other than the Duchess of Cambridge christened the ship when she debuted in the spring of 2013. The Duchess, formerly known as Kate Middleton, christened the ship just over a month before giving birth to the heir to the British throne, Prince George. Middleton carries on an important family tradition as the original Royal Princess was christened by her late mother-in-law, Princess Diana.

Royal Princess Review

cruise ship princess royal

Like other Princess Cruises ships, Royal Princess embraces many traditional components cruisers love and, through partnerships and technology, adds extras appealing to first-time cruisers.

Although Royal Princess debuted in 2013, it went into dry dock for an extensive renovation in December 2018. Many features were added or upgraded during the three months that the ship was out of service, including its beds and the beautiful Lotus Spa.

Royal Princess Deck Plans Combine Casual Family Fun and Exclusive Services for Suite Passengers

Having been the first of the Royal Class vessels, the Royal Princess deck plan served as the blueprint for the rest of the ships in its class. Public spaces are grouped together on decks 5, 6, 7 and 16 to 19, whereas cabins take the rest of the decks. The only exception is Deck 16 (Lido), which is home to a few cabins along with the pool and a number of dining options. This layout packs together all the fun and keeps the vast majority of rooms away from noise at night. Staterooms on decks 8 (Emerald) and 15 (Marina) are possibly the Royal Princess only cabins to avoid if you want the guarantee of a good night’s sleep, as they’re subject to noise from the common areas right above or below.

The only thing some might not love about the Royal’s deck plan is the location of the spa: right off the busy Piazza on Deck 5, which means it gets little natural light. However, we found the space beautiful and relaxing, with a huge treatment menu and a large thermal suite.

Royal Princess is a large cruise ship with a maximum capacity of 3,560 passengers, but crowds are usually not an issue here. You may find some lines and waits at peak dining times – and finding a lounger around the main pool may be a frustrating experience on sunny sea days – but the open-plan spaces, multiple elevators, and ample seating make for good passenger flow. If you’re wondering just how big Royal Princess is, the answer is 1,083 feet long (exactly the length of 3 American football fields) and 260 feet tall.

Princess vs. Royal Caribbean for Alaska, Hawaii and Riviera Maya Itineraries

First-time cruisers trying to decide between Royal Princess and some of Royal Caribbean’s ships for their Alaska, Hawaii or Riviera Maya trips may find it hard to pick one due to their similarities in terms of ports of call. However, the experience aboard each of them is actually pretty different: while Royal Princess offers a mellow, more traditional experience, Royal Caribbean is all about the wow factor when it comes to family fun, with high-tech amenities and stunning Broadway shows.

For a full comparison between the two cruise lines, read Princess Cruises vs. Royal Caribbean International .

The Royal Princess Cruise Ship Offers a Laid-Back, Traditional Experience

A Royal Princess review is not complete without a mention of its laid-back, mellow-but-fun atmosphere onboard. Although there are plenty of opportunities to let your hair down, this is more of a classic cruising experience, with activities that range from a full afternoon tea to lively craft cocktail presentations. Bingo, trivia and game shows dominate the daily program and hosts special destination-themed events, like Puppies (or Parrots) in the Piazza, depending on the itinerary. Evening entertainment aboard the Royal Princess is mostly production shows and music events; you can also watch a recent release at Movies Under the Stars.

That’s not to say that Royal Princess is stuck in time. The modern and high-tech OceanMedallion, a personalization technology, is meant to make your cruise more convenient and service more intuitive. OceanMedallion, a small disk replacing the keycard, is used to open cabin doors automatically, embark and disembark, register food and drink preferences and many more, particularly when paired with several apps.

Unfortunately, on our Royal Princess Alaska sailing, OceanMedallion didn't live up to the hype. Spotty Wi-Fi hindered ordering drinks using the app in most locations or finding our cabinmate using OceanCompass. Similarly, bartenders or waiters rarely consulted iPads; most interactions used our room number, like always. The MedallionNet internet, billed as strong enough to stream, was inadequate to download email. The hotel director told us the system works better outside Alaska, but at least passengers on our sailing seemed to enjoy wearing the Medallions, even if they eschewed pulling out their phones.

Royal Princess shines in its partnerships and programming, even if these lack major signage and branding within the daily Princess Patter. Chocolatier Norman Love's Chocolate Journey desserts stand out from the menu. The North to Alaska enrichment lectures, such as a talk by Libby Riddles, the first female Iditarod winner, were excellent. The Princess Luxury Bed by sleep expert Dr. Michael Breus is one of the comfiest we've experienced at sea. Animal Planet- and Discovery Channel-branded shore excursions were passenger favorites.

A nice choice for people who love a traditional cruise's comforts and rituals, Royal Princess is big enough, with an impressive array of restaurants, to appeal to first-time cruisers. It's not trendy, but it's hard to be bored here -- that's enough for most Royal Princess passengers.

Fellow Passengers

Princess passengers are typically people who seek casual elegance and shy away from overt trendiness. On Alaskan sailings, you'll find more first-time cruisers who have chosen the ship for the destination, while on warm-weather sailings, you'll find more repeat passengers. Americans dominate, on both routes; expect more people from around the entire country in Alaska and a more local audience when the ship sails from a U.S. homeport.

Many families choose Princess; multigenerational groups (grandparents, adult children, grandkids) enjoy the dining and entertainment options and the line's solid family programs, particularly during the summer and holidays. During the Alaska season, the average age is mid- to late 50s; on warm-weather itineraries, the average age skews higher into the 60s (except during school holidays).

Royal Princess Dress Code

Daytime: Casual, with shorts, T-shirts, jeans and leggings most common inside the ship. Bathing suits and cover-ups are the main outfits on the pool deck.

Evening: Smart-casual most nights leans toward casual than smart; many wear the same attire during the day and at dinner. Women wear capris, nice jeans/pants; men wear khakis or nice jeans. Two formal nights on most cruises are laid-back -- few jackets, ties and beaded dresses. Men wear a dress shirt and nice pants; women wear maxi or cocktail dresses.

Not permitted: No swimwear, casual jeans (defined as ones that are frayed or with holes), tank tops, ball caps or shorts are allowed in the restaurants at dinnertime.

Onboard Experience

Well suited to navigating Alaska's coastal waters, your Princess ship offers all the comforts of a floating resort; you'll feel welcomed and right at home – not to mention pampered by a friendly staff that knows what hospitality means – from the moment you step aboard. A typical day on your Tauck Alaska cruise aboard Royal Princess actually starts the night before… with the most comfortable night of sleep at sea thanks to the new Princess Luxury Bed, developed by leading experts in both the science and beauty of sleep… from which you'll awaken feeling refreshed, renewed and rejuvenated. Begin the day as you like… from a quick bite on the go to a sit-down breakfast in a refined setting, enjoying a delicious meal off the menu right from the galley, with a gracious wait staff to take care of your every need. Your morning may be spent exploring ashore on an excursion for Tauck guests only – perhaps visiting a historic Klondike Gold Rush town, riding a 19th-century narrow-gauge railway through the Alaskan wilderness, or enjoying a rafting trip through a bald eagle preserve. After a scrumptious lunch onboard, you might kick back during an afternoon's sail amidst glacial islands once completely covered by ice, now featuring blue-tinged ice cliffs towering over the sea… keeping a close watch for orcas, humpbacks, seals and seabirds. Or kick it up a notch in the fitness center, treat yourself to a soothing session in the Lotus Spa, or relax at The Sanctuary, just for adults . Dinnertime temps with a range of onboard fine dining options offering tantalizing cuisine… maybe the Crown Grill for steak, the Crab Shack for seafood, or Sabatini's for Italian. Later tonight, try your luck in the casino, dance the night away at Skywalkers Nightclub, or head to the theatre. And that's just one typical day's sail in Alaska with Tauck aboard Royal Princess! Like its sister ship,  Regal Princess , unique features like a top-deck pool and the SeaWalk (a glass-paneled walkway that stretches 28 feet beyond the ship's edge) make Royal Princess stand out among competitors.

The 3,560-passenger ship debuted in 2013 and was last refurbished in December 2018. Onboard activities include an indoor driving range, duty-free boutiques and educational programming through Discovery at SEA. Younger passengers can participate in age-appropriate youth clubs while adults play games in the casino or sip cocktails at one of multiple lounges.

When it's time to dine, passengers can choose from the main dining rooms, six specialty restaurants or several casual eateries. In terms of lodging, all cabins are appointed with minifridges and flat-screen TVs. While Interior cabins measure between 158 and 162 square feet, larger Balcony staterooms offer 214 to 222 square feet. Each guest aboard Royal Princess receives an OceanMedallion wearable device to unlock his or her stateroom, make onboard payments, track down friends and family and more.

Royal Princess offers itineraries throughout Alaska, Canada, California, Mexico, Asia, Australia, Hawaii and the South Pacific.

Princess Cruises' Royal-Class Ships

cruise ship princess royal

Princess is known for its understated elegance, but as the cruise line began designing for the Royal Class, which debuted in 2014 with Regal Princess, it looked for new ways to wow passengers. As a result, all four of the Princess Royal-class ships are the largest in the fleet, carrying more than 3,500 passengers each, and they all come packed with new features.

On This Page

Royal-class ships, royal-class amenities, differences among ships within the royal class.

Royal Princess

Regal Princess

Majestic Princess

Sky Princess

Enchanted Princess

Royal-class ships offer the same tried-and-true offerings (grand atrium, multiple dining rooms, Movies Under the Stars) you'll find throughout Princess' fleet, plus a few extras. One unique feature of most (but not all) of the Royal-class ships is the Seawalk, which allows passengers to take a scenic walk over a glass floor that extends 28 feet over the ship's edge, giving you an unobstructed view of the ocean below.

Dining also gets an upgrade on the Royal-class ships. The line's traditional specialty restaurants, such as Crown Grill and Sabatini's, are joined by newer concepts like Slice (a specialty pizzeria) and Salty Dog Grill, which serves up gourmet hot dogs and street tacos.

Princess' Chef's Table also gets a touchup. Royal-class ships take the program -- which already offers an unforgettable culinary journey -- a step further with Chef's Table Lumiere. There, you're enclosed in a shimmering curtain and provided with an exclusive dining experience that foodies rave about.

All ships in the Royal Class also feature The Enclave, a Lotus Spa experience add-on that boasts Princess' largest thermal suite and hydrotherapy pool with a rain shower. You'll also find a Turkish-style steam bath and various aromatherapy and steam chambers for detoxification and relaxation.

Room categories on Royal-class ships were expanded to include deluxe balconies in addition to the other standard categories. A deluxe balcony gives passengers additional space, a sofa bed and a larger balcony, plus some of the amenities that passengers enjoy in a mini-suite.

On all of these ships, you'll also find the much buzzed-about MedallionNet, a super-fast Wi-Fi service.

The Seawalk, the Royal Class' main signature attraction, can only be found on three ships in the Royal Class: Royal Princess, Regal Princess and Majestic Princess. Sky Princess does not have it.

What Sky Princess does have that that the others don't are Sky Suites, which are a new accommodation option with massive balconies and 270-degree panoramic views.

Restaurants differ across the ships as well, with Royal and Regal Princess having identical offerings (Sabatini's, Crown Grill, Crab Shack, Ocean Terrace) that overlap with most of Sky Princess. But Majestic Princess, which is based full-time in Asia, has a completely different set of dining venues (with the exception of Alfredo's Pizzeria and the International Cafe, which are on all four ships).

One restaurant on Majestic Princess that will also be on Sky Princess -- but not Royal and Regal Princess -- is La Mer, an upscale, fee-based French bistro created by Chef Emmanuel Renaut, owner of a three-Michelin-star restaurant.

OceanMedallion -- Princess' clever new take on traditional key cards, which even allow you to remotely order your next drink or track down a missing family member -- is already on Regal, Royal and Sky Princess. Majestic Princess, on the other hand, does not have the high-tech system, and there are no plans to add it.

Regal and Royal Princess are also the only two Royal-class ships with the Watercolor Fantasy Show, a nighttime water, sound and light display that brings deck-side water features to life as they spray water up to 33 feet in the air.

Cruises on Princess' Royal-class ships offer you the latest in what the cruise line has to offer, especially with the roll-out of the popular OceanMedallion program . Nevertheless, the ships do not offer the same whiz-bang attractions that lines like Royal Caribbean and Carnival do, so they are best for someone looking for a modern cruise ship with a more traditional cruise ship feel.

The Royal-class ships are also great options for foodies who don't mind spending a little extra on specialty dining experiences, such as Chef's Table Lumiere.

If you're watching your budget, note that sailings on these ships -- particularly the newest ones in the fleet -- are likely to be a little pricier than voyages on older vessels.

Princess Cruises Royal Princess cruise ship

The Princess Cruises Royal Princess was built in 2013. It was renovated in 2018. It's considered a medium size ship. Coming in at 1,083 ft long and 126 ft wide, it's roughly the length of 3 football fields, as wide as 2.4 tractor trailers, and the same height as a 19-story building. This ship is the third to carry the Royal Princess name. It's also one of 3 ships that feature Princess' Watercolor Fantasy Show, an outdoor dancing fountain show.

Royal Princess Size and Passengers

The Royal Princess can hold 3,560 based on double occupancy (two people per room) and more when you take into account 3rd and 4th passengers. When you compare the total tonnage of the ship to the number of passengers, the Royal Princess has a space ratio of 40. Depending on the ship, this number can range from 30 to 52 (with a bigger number meaning more space per person) so this ship's space-to-person ratio is about average.

The Royal Princess is one of six Royal-class ships currently sailing with Princess Cruises. Royal-class ships are known for the Seawalk. This 60 feet long glass walkway is cantilevered over the side of the ship, 128 feet above the ocean. On the other side of the ship, you can stop by a bar with a glass floor. The Royal Princess is very similar to its sister-ships; Regal Princess, Majestic Princess, Sky Princess, Enchanted Princess and Discovery Princess, although each ship may have some differences.

Royal Princess Food and Restaurants

Main Dining Room on the Princess Cruises Royal Princess

Food is a big part of any cruise, and there will plenty on the Princess Cruises Royal Princess. You have 15 different dining options to choose from. Of those options, 6 are complementary, or included with your cruise fare. The other 7 options have an additional fee. Some of those options are a set price and some have a la cart menu pricing. 53% of the dining options are included which means if you're watching your budget, you won't feel like you're missing out by not going to a lot of extra fee dining places.

In terms of drinks and cocktails, you have a variety of choices. Princess Cruises serves the Coca-cola family of products. That means Coke, Diet Coke, Sprite and Barqs Root Beer, although the selection can vary by ship.

There are also plenty of bars available on this ship. Alcohol is not included in the base price of this cruise ship. To see if you would save money with a drink package, try our Drink Package Calculator.

Pools and Hot Tubs on Royal Princess

The main pool on the Royal Princess

Nothing beats relaxing by a pool with a nice drink in hand as you feel the fresh sea breeze pass by you. The problem is that with thousands of people on a ship, there's not always room. If you want to spend all day in a pool, a cruise might not be the right choice. You would have a much better bet choosing a resort with a huge pool complex. That being said, a quick dip in the pool can be nice on a hot day.

The Princess Cruises Royal Princess has a total of 3 pools and 7 hot tubs.

Tired of loud kids and splashing? 1 of the pools and 2 of the hot tubs are adults only.

Royal Princess Features and Activities

There are quite a few things to do on the Royal Princess. These are the main amenities that are available. Some are included in the cost of the cruise, while others have an additional charge.

Princess Cruises is a premium cruise line. Premium cruise lines typically offer upscale food, accommodations, and service. These typically cost about $150 - $400 per person per day.

Cruise pricing is dynamic and varies for each specific sailing based on factors such as departure point, ports of call, and time of year.

Royal Princess Onboard Costs

Another way to gauge the cost of a cruise is to consider how much you'll spend on board. Even though a lot is included in the base cruise fare, you may still spend money on things like spa treatments, specialty dining, drinks, and excursions. In addition, guests can also have to pay for things like gratuities and tips.

Typically guests can expect to spend about 25 - 40% of the cost of the cruise on onboard expenses. In other words, if the cruise fare is $1,000 per person, you might spend between $250 and $400 on extra expenses.

The table below will help you understand what you might spend onboard a Princess Cruises ship.

Princess Cruises offers two packages to bundle onboard expenses. The Princess Plus package includes daily gratuities, the basic beverage package, 2 fitness classes, 2 casual dining meals, and internet for $60 per day per guest. The Princess Premier package upgrades to the premiere beverage package, wifi for up to 4 devices per guest, two specialty dining meals, unlimited casual dining meals, unlimited fitness classes, and a photo package for $80 per guest per day.

1984: A Royal Princess Launched This Aptly Named Ship

cruise ship princess royal

November 19, 1984

The record-setting cruise ship Royal Princess embarked on her maiden voyage, departing from Southampton, England, for Miami, Florida, with approximately 700 passengers on board. The transatlantic trip began only four days after the British-registered vessel, which had been built for Princess Cruises by the Finnish corporation Wärtsilä at its Helsinki shipyard, was christened at Southampton by Diana, Princess of Wales.

Hundreds of invited children were in attendance to watch Diana crack a bottle of Krug champagne against the ship. Other dignitaries at the ceremony included Mauno Koivisto, President of Finland. “Diana, wearing a bright red suit and hat, was launching her first ship,” reported the Canadian Press news agency. “She pulled a white lever to release the specially doctored bottle which broke successfully against the white hull.”

The Royal Princess, at a cost of $165 million, was the most expensive passenger ship built up to that time. It also had the distinction of being the first cruise ship to have only outside passenger cabins (oceanview rooms lining the edges of the vessel) rather than any inside passenger cabins (rooms built in the middle of a deck and without windows or other outlets for outdoor views)

The ship left Southampton for her maiden voyage shortly after 1:00 p.m. on November 19, and the rough conditions that she soon encountered invited comparisons with an ill-fated ship from more than seven decades earlier. A Knight-Ridder Newspapers article reported, “The Titanic ran into ice. The Royal Princess ran into 60-knot [111.1-kilometers-per-hour] winds with the blow of a hurricane. Both were on their maiden trans-Atlantic voyages from Southampton, England, to America. Both were being called the most luxurious, expensive ships ever built. Both ran into a little bad luck their first time out.”

As the Knight-Ridder account also confirmed, however, the Royal Princess – unlike the Titanic – stayed afloat. This was due to Captain John Young of the Royal Princess maneuvering the ship well out of harm’s way and taking her south past the Azores before turning west to Miami. While this emergency detour helped ensure the safety of the Royal Princess and everyone on board, it also delayed the arrival in Miami by two days.

This delay resulted in the cancellation of various festivities planned to welcome the Royal Princess to the United States. There was still live coverage of the ship’s arrival on November 29 by the television show Good Morning America . In addition, the ship’s crew and passengers were thrown a lavish party that was also attended by the cast of the long-running television series The Love Boat . The Royal Princess subsequently appeared on the series a few times as the cruise ship S.S. Pacific Princess.

The Royal Princess remained in service with Princess Cruises until 2005, when she was transferred to P&O Cruises and renamed Artemis. As Artemis, the ship made history yet again when Sarah Breton took charge as her captain in 2010. Breton was the first woman to command a major cruise ship for P&O Cruises. Even more significantly, she was only the second woman in the world to assume such a role. (Karin Stahre-Janson became the first woman to command a major cruise ship when she took charge of MS Monarch of the Seas of Royal Caribbean Cruises in 2007.)

Artemis sailed for P&O Cruises until 2011, when she was transferred to the fleet of cruise ships operated by the travel agency Phoenix Reisen. Artemis was renamed MV Artania by Phoenix Reisen and remains in service with that organization today.

For more information on MV Artania (previously called Royal Princess and Artemis), please check out http://www.doverferryphotosforums.co.uk/mv-artania-past-and-present/ and https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/MV_Artania .

Great, but what about Allure of the Seas:

Allure of the Seas – world’s biggest cruise ship

When it left Turku, it was the largest cruise ship. Now it is, maybe, the second large.

Have a good day!

Wow, that’s nice 🙂

Bigger ship, better views: 3 takeaways from Princess Cruises' newest vessel

I was rushing to make my dinner reservation on Princess Cruises’ new ship. But when I arrived at the restaurant, the view made me stop.

From the windows at the sushi eatery Makoto Ocean – part of a sphere-shaped structure near the middle of the vessel – I saw the sun sinking below the horizon, a reddish-orange dot on the Mediterranean Sea. The Sun Princess facilitates scenes like that by design.

“We wanted to make sure that within how we designed the (venues) and placed the furniture, we gave maximum opportunity for our guests to be able to celebrate those outward views,” Denise Saviss, Princess’ vice president of entertainment experience, told USA TODAY. “It is really, really unique to have so much glass on the ship.”

Start the day smarter. Get all the news you need in your inbox each morning.

That was one of several striking features during a recent sailing (the ship is now cruising the Mediterranean before it moves to the Caribbean in October). Here are three takeaways from the first in the line’s aptly named Sphere Class.

1. The design showcases views at sea and in port

Makoto isn’t the only venue that offers that kind of view.

Other spaces inside the Sphere – which also houses lobby-slash-entertainment venue The Piazza – feature similarly sweeping vistas across decks 7, 8 and 9. I watched the light sparkle on the water while I sipped coffee one morning at International Café, and patrons dining at Alfredo’s Pizzeria can take in the scenery during their meal from many seats.

That’s also true elsewhere on the ship. At Horizons Dining Room, floor-to-ceiling windows face the ship’s wake. At the other end of the vessel, the Dome, a geodesic structure that Princess has said was inspired by the hills of Santorini, is like a massive solarium.

The space – which will also host shows including acrobatics – has multiple tiers of loungers, an indoor-outdoor pool and the Cascade Bar (which comes in handy for cooling off, as it felt a bit muggy in the Dome at one point on a sunny sea day).

The overall effect helped to bring the outside in.

2. The ship is bigger but still intimate

Sun Princess is the largest ship in the Princess fleet, and the 21-deck vessel can accommodate 4,300 guests. But that doesn’t mean everything is huge.

Given the scale of the offerings, a number of spaces on board feel notably intimate. One night, I walked to Good Spirits at Sea, a cocktail bar crafted in partnership with mixologist Rob Floyd that also hosts classes, and thought I was lost before stumbling upon it tucked around a corner on Deck 7. Inside, the 40-person venue offered a laid-back alternative to other more boisterous nightlife options.

On Deck 9, the ship’s buffet-like venue, The Eatery, gives way to narrower hallways toward the aft with backlit wood paneling and benches. At the end, they open back up to reveal specialty restaurants The Catch by Rudi and The Butcher’s Block by Dario (from Princess’ head of culinary arts, Rudi Sodamin, and in partnership with famed butcher Dario Cecchini, respectively).

Even the multi-configuration Princess Arena felt cozier than its near-1,000-guest capacity would suggest. I sat in the second-to-last row of my section for a performance by the vocal group ODY·C and was still close enough to see clearly.

3. The line leans into family-friendly activities

Part of Sun Princess’ expanded footprint has been used to broaden the line’s family offerings.

Park19, a new space on the ship’s top decks, features a variety of activities in an open-air setting. Saviss said the line worked to balance the interests of core customers and a growing family market “and make sure we're prioritizing spaces that everybody can enjoy.”

“There are some attractions that I think naturally, at first blush, people would say, ‘Oh, it's just for kids,’ but actually, the space is really comprehensive,” she said. “Our attractions are available for many different levels of ability and mobility.”

Those include Coastal Climb, an obstacle course that culminates in 360-degree views from The Lookout observation deck (the highest point accessible to guests on the ship, also reachable via elevator) and The Net ropes course.

On Sea Breeze, billed as the first Rollglider on a cruise ship, passengers will glide along the outer edges of the ship on an electric track (the ride will also be ADA-accessible, though Saviss said some mobility is required for maneuvering into the seat).

It’s as close as the ship gets to an amusement park (Princess’ version). “We're not running the rat race, if you will, of like, who can do it bigger, better,” Saviss said. “If you want to just have a really incredible bird's-eye view of Sun Princess, and in and around where the ship is sailing, you can do that. But there is an option to push a little lever while you're riding it and dial up the speed a bit faster, and then it does become a bit more thrilling.”

The ride was not yet available when I was on board, as the line moved through a testing, certification and training process, but is expected to open on April 27. Sun Princess’ original launch was delayed with the cruise line citing “additional technical work” needed at the shipyard, which pushed back the opening of some onboard amenities.

When is the best time to take a cruise?: We broke it down by region.

There is also a hammock area to chill when guests need a break, a recreational court that can host activities from pingpong to morning meditation, a jogging track and more. Elsewhere on board, guests will find the Firefly Park kids club and hangout spaces Neon Grove and The Underground for tweens and teens, respectively.

Hannah Waddingham Shares This 'Beautiful Honor' with Princess Diana, Kate Middleton: 'Pinch Me' (Exclusive)

The ‘Ted Lasso’ star opened up to PEOPLE about being named Godmother of Princess Cruises’ newest and biggest ship ever, the Sun Princess

Natalia Senanayake is an Editorial Assistant, Lifestyle at PEOPLE. She covers all things travel and home, from celebrities' luxury mansions to breaking travel news.

Hannah Waddingham is following in the footsteps of a few famous royals in her newest role.

The Ted Lasso star has officially been named Godmother of Princess Cruise Line 's new Sun Princess ship following its maiden voyage in February, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal. As part of the cruising tradition , the actress will take on the responsibility of “christening” the new ship with luck as it embarks on its many voyages across the high seas.

Waddingham tells PEOPLE exclusively how meaningful it is to be the ship’s Godmother, especially because of the women who also share the same title.

“I couldn’t believe I have been asked to be a ship Godmother, having grown up around boats all my life and my grandfather was in the Atlantic Convoy in the Navy,” says the actress, who next stars in The Fall Guy . “To be asked to be a part of this beautiful honor is a ‘pinch me’ moment.”

She continues: “I am also honored to be in the esteemed company with previous Godparents to Princess Ships including Diana , Princess of Wales, Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales Kate Middleton , Audrey Hepburn , Martha Stewart , and many others.”

The Emmy-nominated actress adds that a big “privilege and pleasure” for her as Godmother is sending the 4,300 guests that the ship can hold “on their way safely with a big hug.”

The Hannah Waddingham: Home for Christmas actress has recently been celebrating a raucous awards season with her Ted Lasso co-stars after the beloved show's third season concluded  last May. Asked which character would be the biggest cruiser in real life, Waddingham says Ted ( Jason Sudeikis ) is the perfect fit.

“I think Ted would be the biggest cruiser,” she says, adding that “his positive, warm, loving, can-do attitude” would thrive on the getaway and calls out "trivia in Princess Live" and "Spellbound by Magic Castle" as experiences the ever-optimistic soccer coach would easily get on board with.

The next potential cruise lover that comes to mind for Waddingham is Keely, played by Juno Temple , thanks to her “positive and warm disposition,” she says.

She adds that the stars of the hit Apple TV+ sports comedy would be the best company on any group vacation — especially on a cruise.

“Anywhere the cast of Ted Lasso goes, we would have the best kind of party! We would all be down for a party on a beautiful ship. We love each other so much we would have fun being trapped together in an elevator,” she jokes.

The Sun Princess officially set sail on its 10-day maiden voyage through the Mediterranean on Feb. 28. The massive ship, which weighs 177,882 tons, departed from Rome and made stops in Naples; Crete, Greece; Kusadasi, Turkey; Athens; Sicily; Mallorca; and Barcelona.

Never miss a story — sign up for PEOPLE's free daily newsletter to stay up-to-date on the best of what PEOPLE has to offer, from juicy celebrity news to compelling human interest stories.

As the largest ship in Princess Cruises history, the Sun Princess is equipped with eye-catching features like the glass Dome “inspired by the terraces of Santorini,” a press release from the cruise line states.

In the suspended Sphere Atrium, guests can enjoy indoor/outdoor living and soak in stunning views of the endless ocean. Additional breathtaking features include the three-story main dining room, two-level Lotus Spa and the casino, which is the cruise line’s largest to date.
