Welcome to Northeast USA

Covering nine states, hundreds of years of history, a few major cities and a sprinkling of heavenly nature reserves; the Northeast makes for some pretty incredible days out. From the roaring Niagara Falls to the contemplative Gettysburg fields , to the buzzing streets of major metropolitan hubs or the quaint seaside villages of Maine . There’s so much to see in the land of the free, but don’t worry; we’ve got it sorted.

Our Northeast USA trips

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

Northeast USA highlights

Northeast usa travel faqs, do i need a covid-19 vaccine to join an intrepid trip.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Where is Northeast USA?

Northeast USA is found in the top right-hand corner of the continental United States. There are sometimes different states included in this region, but generally, these states make up the Northeast:  Maine , Maryland, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Delaware, New York, New Jersey, and Pennsylvania.

The northernmost states neighbor the Quebec, Ontario and New Brunswick provinces of   Canada . To the east is the Atlantic Ocean, with many of the Northeast states right on the coast. To the west is the Midwest region, and below is   the South .

How do I get to Northeast USA?

It's pretty easy to get to the Northeastern USA as there are several international airports throughout the states. Some of the largest airports include:

  • John F Kennedy International Airport (JFK), La Guardia (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in New York.
  • Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport (DCA) and Washington Dulles International Airport (IAD) in Washington, D.C.

Depending on where you'd like to visit, you can also drive in from any other part of the US or even Canada.

Trainlines and buses also operate in and out of this area which can be great options for those not looking to rent a car.

How will I get around Northeast USA?

Getting around the Northeast as a traveler is generally easy as there is a lot of public transport that operates interstate. Buses can get you just about anywhere in the Northeast, however, long-distance and inter-city trains can take you between several of the major hubs, including New York, Philadelphia and Boston.

Other transport options include the use of private cars, which is great for road trips. There's also the option to fly between certain areas depending on the destination.

When is the best time to visit Northeast USA?

The best time to visit Northeast USA is during the summer from May to August when the weather is at its best. The shoulder seasons can also be good times to visit for small crowds.

If you're looking for a trip filled with snow days and cozy fireside meals, winter in the Northeast is a magical time.

What to pack for a trip to Northeast USA

What to pack on a trip to the Northeast USA depends on your trip type and time of travel. Generally, the climate in the Northeast can vary and change quickly. With that in mind, you should pack to ensure you have warmer clothing, especially for the evening, as well as waterproof items in case of wet weather.

If you are going on a camping or walking/trekking trip, you will likely need to bring some specialty items, including hiking boots, breathable non-cotton hiking t-shirts, a sleeping bag, a towel and suitable layers for rugging up.

If you are traveling in North America over winter, it's recommended that you're prepared for temperatures that can easily fall below 32ºF. This means bringing waterproof clothing, especially shoes with good grip for walking across snow or ice, as well as cold weather gear such as gloves, thermals, fleece and headwear, such as beanies.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Does my trip support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. Trips to this country directly support our global Intrepid Foundation partners, Eden Reforestation Projects and World Bicycle Relief. Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Eden Reforestation Projects

Eden Reforestation Projects are helping to mitigate climate change by restoring forests worldwide; they also hire locally and create job opportunities within vulnerable communities. Donations from our trips support restoration across planting sites in 10 countries around the globe. Find out more or make a donation World Bicycle Relief

Best Hikes in New England: 17 Unmissable Trails

In our guide, you’ll discover some of the most spectacular hiking trails in all of New England. From 4,000 ft peaks and rolling green mountains to vast seascapes, there are awesome hikes to suit all abilities.

Alex Large Avatar

Changing fall foliage, gentle seascapes, wild mountain tops, quaint fishing villages, dense forests – New England is one of the best hiking destinations in the United States. From backcountry expeditions to lakeside family picnics, an epic adventure awaits for everyone.

New England comprises the states of Vermont, New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts, Connecticut, and Rhode Island. It is home to some of the most varied flora and fauna in the country, and there is almost too much variety of landscape to soak up in one day – almost.

While some folk might consider a New England hike to be ‘less epic’ than a walk out west, we’re here to debunk that myth. The sheer variety and density of rock, woodland, and history in the Northeast is unrivaled anywhere in the country.

mount washington new england

  • Type: Out and Back/Loop
  • Difficulty: Moderate/Strenuous
  • Length: 7/8.5 miles

Mount Washington stands high above the White Mountain National Forest and is part of the Presidential Mountain Range, the highest in the Northeast. Frequented year-round by hikers, skiers, and rock climbers, New England’s highest peak can be ascended by foot, by car via the Mount Washington Auto Road, or the famous Cog Railway!

The most popular hiking trails up the mountain start from the Pinkham Notch Visitor Center and rise 4,300 ft to the summit.

From the Notch, head for ‘Tuck’s Trailhead’. Soon after passing a waterfall, the trail forks. For those seeking a quieter slog, the Lion’s Head Trail rises steeply and offers incredible views down into the ravine.

Alternatively, the Tuckerman Ravine Trail offers great views of the Lion’s Head, the ravine, and the headwall. For the best experience, we recommend going up one and down the other!

The ‘easiest’ hiking trail up Mount Washington, the Jewell Trail, begins at the Cog Railway side.

This trail provides quite a day out with splendid views over the White Mountains, the most rugged range in the Northeast, as well as the rising cog train! From this side, the Ammonoosuc Ravine Trail rises steeply past large waterfalls and the Lake of the Clouds AMC hut. Hikers often choose to go up one trail and down the other for a memorable loop.

kid staring at mount katahdin new england

  • Difficulty: Strenuous
  • Length: 9 miles

In the northeasternmost state of Maine, a sharp knife-edge ridge cuts the skyline: Mount Katahdin. It is the final destination for many Appalachian Trail thru-hikers, and perhaps one of the most photographed mountains in New England.

Over 10 trails lead to its summit. In our opinion, a traverse of the Knife Edge Trail between Pamola Peak and Mount Katahdin is the most exhilarating day out. However, this is a challenging day. This long trail requires careful planning, fitness, and experience, and should never be attempted in arduous conditions.

From the Roaring Brook Campground, follow the blue blazes for the Helon Taylor Trail. Soon, you leave the trees and the exposure is striking. From Pamola Peak, traverse the 1.1-mile-long Knife Edge Trail. This airy traverse, at times only 4 ft wide, is lined with 2000-foot drops. It requires careful stepping, agility, and confidence. However, relish the incredible position!

From Baxter Peak, either descend the Saddle or Cathedral Trails, the latter being shorter but much steeper. These connect to Chimney Pond Trail, which brings you back to Roaring Brook Campground.

Note: Baxter State Park limits access to Mount Katahdin to protect natural resources and wildlife. Reserve a parking spot at one of their three trailheads (make sure you know which hike you are doing) on weekends, and in July and August.

cadillac mountain new england

  • Difficulty: Easy/Intermediate
  • Length: 3/7 miles

Sitting at 1,530 ft on Mount Desert Island within Acadia National Park , Cadillac Mountain is the highest point along the North Atlantic seaboard. This glaciated-scoured peak overlooks rocky beaches, bays, lush forests, and the quaint village of Bar Harbor. The best part? These views are accessible by foot, bike, and car!

North Ridge Trail (4.4 miles round trip) is the most popular route to the summit and offers an all-around great experience.

The shortest and steepest way up, West Face Trail (3.1 miles), offers great views over Bubble Pond and Eagle Lake and is the option for rock-savvy folk.

The South Ridge Trail (7 miles) is one of the longest in Acadia and offers the widest breadth of views.

You can also drive up Cadillac Mountain, though during the busy months, we advise checking Acadia National Park to see if bookings are required.

Regardless of how you get up, we recommend leaving well before first light to ensure you catch the full sunrise.

Franconia Ridge Loop New England

  • Length: 8.9 miles

The Franconia Ridge Loop traverses peaks of the second-highest mountain range in the White Mountains: Mount Lafayette, Mount Lincoln, and Little Haystack. The trailhead is only 2 hours and 10 minutes north of Boston, in New Hampshire. This long trail is a must-do when in New England!

Start on the Old Bridle Path Trail on the Northside of I-93. Soon, you arrive at a fork with two trail options: go up one, down the other!

The Falling Waters Trail is the more popular ascent. It crosses several creeks and waterfalls in dense woodland, then suddenly pops out over the treeline onto the summit of Little Haystack. The views over the White Mountains are great, and the 1.7-mile traverse to Mount Lafayette is nothing short of thrilling!

Climb steadily up Mount Lincoln then Mount Lafayette. From here, descend via the Greenleaf Trail, where you will pass the AMC Greenleaf Hut , which is one of eight lodging locations in the White Mountains. From here, head down toward the trailhead by the Old Bridle Path Trail.

This loop is also done in reverse, by continuing on the Old Bridle Path Trail at the fork. This way is steeper but also quieter. It offers more expansive views toward the Franconia Ridge you’ll soon be traversing.

Mount Moosilauke New England

  • Difficulty: Easy/Challenging

Mount Moosilauke’s name comes from the language of the Abenaki people – ‘bald place’. There are four different trailheads, though regardless of which you choose, the mountain’s exposed and treeless summit will provide exceptional 360-degree views.

The easiest ascent is via the Gorge Brook Trail, which has an elevation gain of 2,400 feet and begins from the Ravine Lodge Trailhead.

Cross over the Gorge Brook, pass a memorial, and wind through the forest. Relish the views over the Sandwich Range, the Kancamagus Highway, Lincoln, and the Franconia Ridge. From the windy summit, either retrace your steps for an out-and-back hike or descend the Carriage Road to Snapper Trail, then down to form a loop.

The most challenging hike up has 3,100 feet of total elevation gain in 3.8 miles. It is part of the Appalachian Trail.

From the Beaver Brook Trailhead, you’ll soon meet the Beaver Brook Cascades. Here, the going gets tough. Caution is required as there are slippery rocks and this is one of the steepest hikes in the Whites. After 2 miles, the trail merges with the Benton Trail in the alpine for the final summit push. Carefully descend the same way.

Baldface Circle Trail New England

  • Difficulty: Challenging
  • Length: 9.8 miles

The Baldface Circle Trail might fall off the peak bagger’s radar because it doesn’t reach 4,000 ft, but this is an epic hike with 3,569 ft of elevation gain. This long trail provides consistently sumptuous scenery and a jaw-dropping view of Mount Washington over the Carter Range.

Start at the Baldface Circle trailhead. The most common way up is via the South peak first. From the Emerald Pool junction, head up for 2.3 miles to the summit. Be careful in wet conditions as this open rocky section can be slippery. It may require light scrambling.

Once on the South summit, follow the Circle Trail toward the summit of North Baldface. To continue the loop, keep following the trail down.

Mount Cardigan New England

  • Type: Out and back
  • Difficulty: Easy/Moderate
  • Length: 3 miles

This easy-to-moderate hike is a great way to spend a day outside with the family, for trail runners who want a quick blaze up and down, for a rest day, or simply for anyone who wants great, accessible views! This trail can be tackled year-round, too.

From the trailhead in the parking lot, follow the orange-blazed trail markers over wooden bridges and through the forest. The trail is straightforward, with an elevation gain of 1,225 ft. When the trees clear, the views open up and the fire tower on the summit is seen. Retrace your steps to descend.

Beehive Trail Acadia National Park New England

  • Length: 1.4 miles

This is one of the most unique hikes in Acadia National Park . It is a great way for thrill-seekers to prepare for the Precipice Trail since it features a cliff walk and climbing metal rungs on a short, exposed granite rock face.

Numerous trails start from across the Sand Beach parking lot. Follow signs for the Beehive Loop Trail. A flat section meanders through the forest until reaching a junction. Head right. It is best to walk this trail counter-clockwise for traffic flow.

Now, the fun begins! Walk above big boulders and staircases, narrow ledges, then climb the rung ladders. During the 450 ft of elevation gain, the views get more expansive until, at the summit, the horizon is fully outstretched: Sand Beach and Great Head, Thunder Hole, and the Gulf of Maine.

Ocean Path Trail, Acadia National Park New England

  • Difficulty: Easy
  • Length: 2.2 miles

From the south end of the Sand Beach parking lot, follow signs for the trail. The walk is flat, so enjoy the many different rocky viewpoints. Halfway to Otter Point, we highly recommend stopping at Thunder Hole. Why thunder? Well, if it’s high tide, the billowing waves crashing into the sea cliffs sound like Thor himself is throwing a tantrum in very close proximity!

Onward, there is the option to deviate up the Gorham Mountain Trail (2 miles), a great vantage point. Then, near Otter Point, a small trail leads down to Monument Cove, where you can watch rock climbers abseiling. The light here is incredible at sunrise!

Precipice Trail Acadia National Park New England

  • Length: 2.5 miles

The Precipice Trail to the summit of Champlain Mountain is one of the most exposed trails in all of New England. Experienced hikers will climb boulders, ladders, and metal rungs, and walk along narrow ledges over steep drops. The psyche is guaranteed to be high!

The best time to tackle this challenging trail is in August and early autumn. The trail is closed from March-July for peregrine falcon nesting. In winter? Icy and dangerous conditions await.

The trailhead on Park Loop Road is ten minutes from Bar Harbor. Get there early! Once you set off, it’s uphill for the strenuous 1,060 ft elevation gain. One minute you’ll be slogging up a big staircase, the next you’ll be climbing beneath car-sized boulders! Keep an eye out for the blue blazes on the rocks.

Tread across the narrow cliff walk and relish the exposure. The views over the water and the foliage below are magnificent, though careful stepping is required. Soon, you enter the famous part of the trail – steep, metal rungs. Climb these until you pop onto the summit.

Descend via the Champlain North Ridge Trail to the Orange and Black Trails. Don’t worry, this is just a walk!

West Rattlesnake Mountain New England

  • Difficulty: Moderate
  • Length: 2.0 miles

The viewpoint from the West Rattlesnake outcrop offers superb views over Squam Lake and its many islands. This hike can be done year-round, however, trail closures due to mud maintenance might affect access in the spring.

Follow signs for The Old Bridle Path. As you gradually ascend, notice the oak, beech, hemlock, and pine forest. Continuing below the outcrops, there is a shift in the community of trees. Now, look for red and white oaks, red pine, staghorn sumac, and maple trees. Near the summit, look out for Douglas’ Knotweed, a rare herb found in only a few places in New Hampshire.

To get to the true summit, East Rattlesnake, continue over the ridge. Alternatively, go down Five Finger point.

Flume Gorge Trail Franconia Notch State Park New England

At the base of Mount Liberty, New Hampshire, you can watch as water rushes 800 feet between the high walls of Conway granite as it has for thousands of years, slowly forcing a 12-20 foot pathway of rock. Standing between 70 and 90 ft, the gorge walls are impressive!

This is one of the most popular New England hikes , and a fee is often required between May and October. Plan ahead and reserve.

The Flume Gorge Trail begins at the Flume Visitor’s Center. The moderate trail follows boardwalks, goes over bridges, and up many stairs, offering incredible views into the gorge, of the moss-covered walls and glaciated boulders, and of the flora surrounding you.

Cannon Mountain, Franconia Notch State Park New England

  • Length: 5.6/4 miles

Nestled in Franconia Notch State Park , this 4,100-footer is part of the Western White Mountains in the Kinsman Range. Cannon Mountain is one of New England’s most popular ski destinations. However, the off-season offers numerous mountain hikes for the keen walker!

From just off the I-93, the Hi-Cannon Trail rises steeply from the Lafayette Campground for 2.8 miles to the summit. This way offers a great view over Lonesome Lake for when you need to wipe your brow!

The shortest and most popular way up Cannon Mountain is via the 2-mile Kinsman Ridge Trail. This is an absolute calf-burner, but the views at the top are rewarding.

Pretty Echo Lake lies about halfway up. Soon after, the rewards of a steep hike are relished. A trail to the left brings you to the top of a large outcrop, with a stunning view spanning many aforementioned New England classics: Mount Lafayette, Lincoln, Little Haystack, and Mount Moosilauke.

From here, hike up to the summit, which has a lookout deck with binoculars!

Diana's Baths, White Mountains New

  • Length: 1.2 miles

This short trail in Bartlett, near North Conway, is perfect to squeeze in either before or after hiking one of the larger peaks in New Hampshire, or for anyone seeking the cool shade. This mellow jaunt to ‘Diana’s Falls’ – fed by the Big Attitash Mountain – brings you past many rocks, pools, ledges, streams, and small waterfalls.

The first activity in the area was in the 1860s when George Lucy built a house, barn, and water wheel-powered sawmill here. In the 1890s, he built a boarding house for tourism, then in the 1930s upgraded his water wheel and sawmill by building a concrete dam with a turbine system.

The original buildings were removed nearly 100 years after they were first built, but hikers can still see remains.

The trail begins on a gravel-paved trail in the forest. Soon, you will begin walking up toward the falls. On the way, sunbathe on a rock, cool off in a pool of crystal-clear water, slide down a natural rockslide, and enjoy the clean air. This is a beautiful respite, and it is understandable why the Lucys stayed for over 100 years!

After reluctantly leaving your walk, continue to the crown jewel: Diana’s Falls, which measures nearly 75 ft.

Bash Bish Falls Massachusetts

  • Length: 1.2/1.5 miles

There are two starting points to get to the impressive Bash Bish Falls, which are in the Taconic Mountains of Berkshire County: Mount Washington Road, Massachusetts; or at Taconic State Park, New York. If you are meeting someone, make sure you know which parking lot you’re headed to! Phone reception is minimal in these mountains.

The Bash Bish Falls trail from Massachusetts is shorter, but steeper and more rugged, making for a challenging hike. Leave the lower car park on Fall Roads. Ascend steeply over boulders, exposed roots, wooden steps, and stairs along Bash Bish brook through dense forest. Soon, the twin falls colliding down for nearly 80 feet reveal themselves.

Alternatively, the ascent from the Taconic State Park car park in New York is a little longer but more easy-going. This is the better option for those with young kids, and a great way to cross the state line on foot!

Mount Mansfield New England

  • Type: Loop/Out and back
  • Length: 6.6/6/9.4 miles

Mount Mansfield, in Smugglers Notch State Park, dominates the Northeast skyline and is Vermont’s highest peak. It is home to some of the best skiing New England has to offer, but in the summer and early autumn, it is a day hiking paradise, receiving over 40,000 visitors.

While the Long Trail is the classic and most frequented on the mountain, the Sunset Ridge Trail (3.3 miles one way) is shorter and offers equally-sublime views since it is above the treeline.

In contrast, the Laura Cowles Trail (2.7 miles) steeply climbs the side of a ravine and is largely sheltered.

Both of these trails form a fantastic loop, though we recommend coming down the Sunset Ridge Trail.

The mountain’s classic trek is via the Long Trail South (9.4 miles out and back) from Route 108. This is one of the best hikes in New England and is almost all above treeline – one of the few alpine zones in the Green Mountain State!

From the east side of the mountain, ascend the trail for 1.7 miles until reaching the Taft Lodge, built in 1920. Continue up the slabby rock – careful when wet! – to meet the Hell Brook and Adam’s Apple Trails.

Soon, leave the trees to embark on the best part of this epic hike: the ridgeline to the Chin. This is a difficult and exposed section, and perhaps best for experienced hikers, however, it is one of the finest treks in New England.

Once on the summit, bask in the views of the surrounding mountains and Lake Champlain. Pay attention to the time and the weather. Getting caught in a storm up there is dangerous.

The easiest way to the top is via the Auto Toll Road at Stowe Mountain Resort. Walk the ridgeline from the Nose to the Chin.

freedom trail boston

Unlike our New England nature hikes, the Freedom Trail is a collection of 16 nationally significant historic sites in Boston and Charlestown, Massachusetts .

Connected by a physical red line embedded into the city sidewalks, sites include churches, burying grounds, benches, ships, monuments, bookstores, meeting houses, and more. Collectively, they tell the story of the American Revolution and will bring you all the way back to the 17th century.

There are many different ways to enjoy the Freedom Trail, and how long it takes will largely depend on your interests. You can use a map, audio guide, brochure, guidebook, or smartphone app to help guide you from one place to another. Each historic site will also have docents or an exhibit to provide more information.

Visitors also have the opportunity to join a 90-minute Foundation’s tour (1 mile) with an 18th-century costumed guide. The tour leaves the Visitor’s Center four times a day.

New England is undoubtedly one of the greatest places to hike in the United States. From leisure day hikes on the coast of Maine to full-day epics ascending the 4,000 ft peaks in New Hampshire and Vermont, there is a New England hike for everyone!

Explore Soaring Ridges and Deep Forest on the Northeast’s Best Dayhikes

From blueberry picking in new york and new hampshire to pure solitude in new hampshire and maine, moose sitings in vermont, and peaks in new york, these the hikes feature the best of the northeast..

Heading out the door? Read this article on the new Outside+ app available now on iOS devices for members! >","name":"in-content-cta","type":"link"}}'>Download the app .

From long alpine ridgelines to berry-filled pine bogs to scrambly summit bids, there is no hiking like that in America’s northeast. Peakbaggers can head to the Adirondacks and the Whites for years worth of panoramic summit views, while those who prefer a slower pace can head to the blueberry- and moose-filled forests in the valleys below. Pick from wilderness retreats where wildlife is more likely than hikers. Here’s Backpacker’s picks for the best summits, solitude, and wildlife in all of this particular corner of the country.

Best Dayhike in the Northeast: Franconia Ridge, NH

9 miles (Difficult)

Views from the Franconia Ridge Trail in New Hampshire’s White Mountains

Get a taste of the Alps in New Hampshire on this high-wire loop. Franconia Ridge’s exposed, 1.7-mile alpine traverse—over Little Haystack Mountain, Mt. Lincoln, and Mt. Lafayette—feels much higher than its 5,000-foot elevation.  Tracing the rocky spine of the ridge through the White Mountains, the trail winds up and over the second-highest range of summits in the Whites, topping out at 5,249 feet on Mt. Lafayette, the fourth-highest peak in the entirety of the Whites.

The best loop route: Start on the Falling Waters Trail and climb through the spray of trailside cascades, emerging from treeline just below the summit of Little Haystack. Then head north on the Franconia Ridge Trail/AT and scramble over granite outcroppings as you peer across the entire Pemigewasett Wilderness. Rare diapensia and alpine sedges turn a patchwork of color in late September. From the AMC’s Greenleaf Hut, descend via the Old Bridle Path to close the loop.

Best Peak Hikes in the Northeast:

Cascade mountain, ny.

4.2 miles (Easy)

a rocky ridgeline trails away into thick woods with forested mountains rising beyond

The easiest of the Adirondack 4,000-footers lies in the heart of the High Peaks between Lake Placid and Keene. On this round-trip hike, climb through a mosaic of rocks and roots, then break out of the trees onto the elongated bald summit–with views so stunning it feels like cheating. Gaze out at Lake Champlain and the Green Mountains, Whiteface Mountain, and the iconic Great Range. Arrive by 9 a.m. for a parking spot, though there’s plenty of space for a private picnic on the expansive summit ridge.

Mt. Mansfield, VT

6.8 miles (Moderate)

"Fall foliage landscape with Mt. Mansfield in the background, Stowe, Vermont, USA"

Hike to the top of Vermont on this round-trip along the Sunset Ridge Trail . Pass gravity-defying Cantilever Rock and two tunnels formed by enormous glacial erratics on the 2,550-foot ascent to the summit. Above treeline, enjoy views of Camels Hump, the Green Mountains, and the Adirondacks. Merge with the Appalachian Trail on the ridge, then stroll across puncheon and bedrock to reach The Chin, the true summit.

Most Remote View in the Northeast

Saddleback mountain, me.

13.4 miles (Difficult)

the summit of Saddleback Mountain Maine with high peaks in the background

Yes, the Appalachian Trail climbs Saddleback , but you’ll find none of the AT hordes from down south: This exposed round-trip route, in the heart of moose country, is traveled only by thru-hikers and mountain-savvy trekkers. About 1.4 miles from the start, scramble to the top of jutting Piazza Rock, which hangs at an outrageous angle with a tree bizarrely rooted to its top. Break from the gnarled krummholz to traverse a 1.6-mile ridge amid a maze of lichen-covered slab and chunks of granite. Then ascend wooden ladders to a subpeak called The Horn, with stay-awhile views of the Rangeley Lakes and the entire Sugarloaf region.

Best Hikes in the Northeast to See Wildlife

Bald mountain, vt.

4.2 miles (Moderate)

Moose crossing a pond

Hike into the heart of the wild country on this South Trail out-and-back, which passes through several clearings where moose often linger. Then climb 1,450 feet to the summit of Bald Mountain-Westmore –which offers a striking view from the top of a 50-foot firetower. The vista encompasses nearby Lake Willoughby, the Whites in New Hampshire, and Lake Memphremagog.

Moose Mountain, NH

8 miles (Moderate)

A view from the Airline Trail following a mountain ridge on the slopes of Mt Adams in the White Mountains of New Hampshire.

You don’t name a mountain Moose for its bird life. Take the Appalachian Trail across Mink Brook–where you’ll likely see a large ungulate before you’ve even broken a sweat–and then climb 1.9 miles through hardwoods to 2,290-foot South Peak (one of two peaks that constitute Moose Mountain ). Check the view of Mt. Cardigan, and continue two miles along the ridge to North Peak, your turnaround. Bonus: This trail is a great snowshoeing route in winter.

Best Hikes in the Northeast for Solitude

Baldface traverse, nh.

a hiker silhouetted on a summit with arms up in victory

Who needs the crowded Presidential Range when you can have an extraordinary alpine ridge to yourself? Overlooked because they are less than 4,000 feet (barely), the Baldfaces rise on the eastern edge of the White Mountains. You can see Mt. Washington and the Caribou-Speckled Mountain Wilderness from the summit of South Baldface. Follow the trail markers carefully on this steep, ledgy loop. If the rocks are dry, climb to the north peak first, cross the broad treeless ridge to the south peak, then descend via the distinctive bald face.

Mt. Abraham, ME

Lone hiker on mountain summit

Few hikers find their way to this spectacular mountain, despite its proximity to Portland and status as Maine’s first ecological reserve. The round-trip route starts out easy with a two-mile ramble through old-growth forest. Then it climbs relentlessly for two more miles–and almost 3,000 vertical feet–up a talus slope to the bald summit. The reward: a panorama that stretches from Mt. Washington to Mt. Katahdin–all to yourself. Above treeline, step carefully among the rare alpine plants, including Bigelow’s sedge and alpine bilberry.

Apple Pie Hill, NJ

Landscape of the New Jersey Pine Lands in summer.

Solitude in America’s most densely populated state? You’ll find it here in the Pine Barrens, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve. Apple Pie Hill is only 209 feet above sea level, but it affords a commanding view of this million-acre maze of scrub pine, swamps, and bogs. Take the mostly level Batona Trail on this round-trip. In April, pine barrens tree frogs start raising their annual racket; orchids bloom from spring until late summer.

Peekamoose/Table Mts., NY

8.6 miles (Moderate)

small waterfall down mossy rocks in deep forest

Hikers flock to nearby Slide Mountain, the highest summit in the Catskills. Let them. This out-and-back explores quiet forests on a 2,400-foot climb past a series of gravity-defying rocks. You’ll first reach the wooded cap of Peekamoose Mountain , then drop into a col and summit 3,847-foot Table Mountain. Best lunch spot: on the ledges just below the peak.

Devil’s Gulch, VT

4.6 miles (Moderate)

Multi colored trees seen over the Camel Hump Mountain

This minimally-traveled section of the Long Trail offers maximum variety for the mileage: wildlife, ponds, a deep gorge, and a mountain view. Head south on the LT to Ritterbush Pond, in the heart of moose-rich Babcock Nature Preserve. Then meander through hardwoods to an A-frame “gateway” formed by two boulders, and enter Devil’s Gulch –a lush ravine with 175-foot-high walls. Ascend to a vista that includes Mt. Belvidere, then return through the gulch and close the loop by skirting the shore of Big Muddy Pond.

The Best Northeast Hikes for Berries

The brothers, ny.

10.3 miles (Hard)

A view of Big Slide Mountain from Gothics in the Adirondack High Peaks

This classic Adirondack loop is well worth doing without the sweet reward you’ll find in berry season. Add the bonanza awaiting on a series of open ledges on Big Slide Mountain, a mile from the start, and this is the region’s premier late-summer trek. It’s a stiff 2.6-mile climb, including a series of wooden ladders, to the 4,199-foot summit. On top, the vista encompasses Mts. Marcy, Giant, Algonquin, and other High Peaks. Continue over Yard Mountain, then descend to Johns Brook Lodge, the Adirondack Mountain Club’s historic outpost, on the way out.

Percival-Morgan Loop, NH

5.5 miles (Moderate)

Lake Squam from the top of Mt Percival

The ridge separating the peaks of Percival and Morgan confronts hikers with this dilemma: Look down to grab handfuls of sweet blueberries, left for a jaw-dropping view of Franconia Ridge, or right across the entire lakes region? Fortunately, “all of the above” is a fine choice. Both summits are more than 2,000 feet high, and the loop route along the Crawford-Ridgepole Trail includes a descent down three ladders on a 50-foot wall of rock.

Bear Meadows, PA

3.5 miles (Easy)

forested bog in Bear Meadows Natural Area

One of the largest freshwater bogs in the East harbors a bountiful blueberry hike: Pick fruit along most of this loop as you watch for red-eyed vireos, hooded warblers, and scarlet tanagers–just three of the 88 bird species that breed here. The path tunnels through dense rhododendrons and hemlock trees up to 1,000 years old.

Honorable Mentions

Cadillac mountain, me.

Panoramic coastal views from the top of Acadia National Park’s Mt. Desert Island are worth an early start to beat the crowds. Take the North Ridge Trai l (4 miles round-trip).

Gleasman’s Falls, NY

Head to the lonely western Adirondacks for this 5.6-miler to a waterfall. Pass a beaver pond on Burnt Creek along the way.

Hunger Mountain, VT

Take the Waterbury Trail , a ledgy route up several rock chimneys, to a dazzling view of Mt. Mansfield. Allow extra time for the stiff, 4.4-mile trek, especially in blueberry season.

Katahdin, ME

For an 11-mile loop that makes a perfect (long) day, connect the Dudley Trail with the Saddle Trail.

Great guide, literally awesome destinations. Good camp sites (though hot water and WiFi hard to come by) Only downside was that covering such huge distances and team chores meant little free time to enjoy quiet enjoyment of the scenery and wildlife, and little free time in the evenings Would thoroughly recommend this trip

Fantastic experience. The hikes were all different but the landscapes equally stunning. Our CEO was excellent in his knowledge and his guidance of the group. There was alot of driving but it was the only way to see all 5 Parks, and was definitely worth it. It was a full on tour, but then that is what we wanted and paid for. Worth every penny!

9 Day Rockies Hiking and Camping Tour Tour

9 Day Rockies Hiking and Camping Tour

Alex was a wonderful guide and host on the 9 day hike through the Rockies. He is friendly, knowledgeable about the places we hiked through and very accommodating to his guests needs. I cannot emphasise enough the quality and variety of the food provided, ranging from blueberry pancake breakfasts and cheese fondue lunches to chargrilled steak and fish taco dinners. It truly made the trip all the more special and unique to Fresh Adventures. The tent, sleep mat and sleeping bag provided served me well, keeping me warm and dry through some inclement weather. Be prepared to pitch in by putting up and taking down your tent and gear. You'll reach grandmaster level after 8 nights. The hikes we went on varied from reasonably gentle to challenging, depending on your fitness level. For the more challenging hikes, Alex provided options for those who didn't feel up to it. The other activities on offer, such as horse riding and a stroll around Jasper also added variety to the trip. If you're looking for a hiking/camping trip with a difference, Fresh Adventures is a safe bet. Thanks for a great experience Alex!

4 day Yellowstone and Tetons in depth tour from Salt Lake City Small Groups Tour

I just got back from the Yellowstone/Tetons trip leaving from Salt Lake City. I had such a great time. I was apprehensive about camping, since I’m not a big camper, but the camping and time around the campfire at night helped to create a bond with all the other people on the trip. We saw some really great views and Mike, our guide, did a wonderful job at getting us to all the best places. The trip was well organized, and the communication before the trip was exceptional, whether it was answering an email, questions over the phone, or email communication just before the trip. I would definitely travel with Bindlestiff tours again.

Alaska & Yukon Explorer

Really fabulous experience hiking Alaska and Yukon, beautiful, and often majestic scenery. We had a couple of close encounters with black and grizzly bears, which was a real treat, all from the safety of the minivan. The weather was just beautiful, only rained 1 day of the 15 day tour. The hotels were a welcome treat at the end of the day's hike, and especially recommend those who included breakfast in their stay because not all did. Our guide, Stefan, was very knowledgeable about the hikes and the countryside, but had to be reminded to translate from German to English for me, when informing the mainly German group (who also spoke English). Overall it was a very memorable experience...My friends in NZ have tagged Ruby Range Tours as their next adventure...Maakere - Rotorua,NZ

The Best of Banff and Jasper, Hoteltour Tour

The Best of Banff and Jasper, Hoteltour

An excellent tour. The Canadian Rockies were amazing as was our guide, Rebecca Roman. She was fantastic in keeping the group at the right level of activity and seemed to know everything - even where the best stones were to use as seats when we stopped for lunch. As the two oldest members of the group we were concerned about holding up others on some hikes. She managed to encourage us to the point where we felt comfortable. A truly wonderful young woman. One complaint - the tour had us staying in Jasper two nights but we ended up an hour away in Hinton. This increased our driving time considerably and Hinton is not Jasper. A few dollars of compensation would be welcome.

I had a wonderful time! I only wish the tour had been longer. Our guide Rebecca was super great and funny. We ate well and saw some amazing views. I was worried I wouldn’t be fit enough however it was fine. I normally walk/run three kilometres a day so while this trip was a workout I was fine keeping up.

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour Tour

7 Day Southwest National Parks Grand Canyon Camping Tour

This was our family’s first guided trip, and we chose the camping option (ages 52, 50, 13, 12). It exceeded our expectations! Despite a complex itinerary we never once had to think about how to get there, how much time to spend at each place, where to park, what to see, where to stay, where or what to eat - that was all planned for us. There was no marital or family tension and could just truly sit back and enjoy the ride! I truly believe we did more and saw more than we ever would have on our own. And special experiences like moonrises and sunrises were a big bonus. Our guide John was an enthusiastic and capable outdoorsman. He made sure the trip met the needs of the various guests - campers and hotellers alike, with a wide range of ages and physical abilities. There were thoughtful touches like road-trip playlists, moonrise and sunrise viewings, pit stops at roadside stops to support Native American craftsmen, and more. This is a beautiful part of the US - each park more beautiful than the last, but each one unique and wonderful. Highly recommend!

I have great time. Dusty is the best tour manager. I have very good first camping trip.
the best way to explore the vastness and glory of the Utah desert is by camping and hiking in small groups. I enjoyed this trip immensely, it was challenging enough but not too much. Our guide was a brave and resourceful powerful woman. I am planning my next trip with you already!

Your Guide to the Best Guided Trips for Leaf Peepers

northeast hiking tours

Ron and Patty Thomas / Photographer's Choice / Getty Images

With leaf peepers descending on New England each autumn from all parts of the globe, it might be easier to leave the planning to someone else and enjoy a guided biking, hiking, walking, bus, train, cruise, or even an aerial tour of New England this fall. Even if you don't consider yourself the organized tour type, a group excursion might be your best bet for maximizing your time during New England's peak tourism season.

Tours range from day trips to full-week excursions where travelers are shuttled around across New England. Regardless of the tour duration, you'll be traveling with locals and fall foliage experts who can guarantee that you see some of the most scenic spots in the Northeast. Plus, once peak foliage arrives , New England fills with visitors and joining a tour keeps the stress level low.

Many organized tours have been cut back or canceled in 2020, so be sure to confirm with individual businesses that they are open this season. If you are unable to join a tour, you can always visit the best places in New England for fall foliage on your own.

Bus tours are one of the most popular ways to explore New England fall foliage. Leave the driving to an operator such as Caravan Tours , which offers an eight-day New England Fall Foliage guided motorcoach trip leaving from Boston on a variety of September and October departure dates. Sit back and enjoy vivid views of changing leaves in all six New England states as you visit the region's most iconic attraction.

Biking Tours

If you're passionate about biking and looking to head out on a "last hurrah" trek before autumn yields to blustery winter, a number of New England fall foliage biking tour providers will lead you on a self-powered journey to remember. Book yourself, for example, on one of VBT Bicycling Vacations ' scheduled outings this fall. This tour company offers a number of autumn trips in Vermont, Cape Cod, and Maine's Acadia National Park . Trip leaders provide support and encouragement all along the way, and your tour includes specially selected accommodations and great regional dining throughout your journey.

Train Tours

If chugging along the tree-lined tracks aboard a historic locomotive sounds appealing, then there are plenty of scenic options to choose from. Among the fall's best railroading adventures is the  Essex Steam Train & Riverboat excursion, which is like taking two trips in one. Board a historic steam train and travel through the rural Connecticut River Valley, followed by a journey through the local wetlands on a steamboat. The entire trip takes about two and a half hours and is available on weekends from September 26 until October 25, 2020.

In neighboring New Hampshire, the Conway Scenic Railroad is one of the most romantic trips in the entire Northeast. Different rides vary in time from 55 minutes to over six hours, depending on how long you want your journey to be. Most train rides also include live commentary about New Hampshire's history and local folklore to complement the autumn views outside the window.

Hiking and Walking Tours

Carl D. Walsh / Aurora Photos / Getty Images

The crunch of leaves beneath your feet adds to the charm of fall days in New England, so consider claiming a spot on one of the region's best guided hiking or walking tours. You can even get a head start on the new year by making a resolution to get fit this fall, starting with an inspiring stay at Jimmy LeSage's New Life Hiking Spa in Vermont's lush mountains near Killington. With walks and activities for all levels, from beginners to walkers seeking a challenge, LeSage's programs are designed for more than just weight loss. You'll retrain your mind in healthy ways, too.

The travel company Backroads leads hiking groups around the world, including one through the forests of Vermont and another within Acadia National Park in Maine. Group trips in 2020 have been reformatted and now include fewer people, so you can have a more intimate experience with nature while also staying safe.

Cruise New England's Waters in the Fall

A guided tour of New England's colorful coastline aboard a seaworthy vessel is sure to be a memorable outing, as is a riverboat trip as the leaves put on their annual show. Scenic tours from M/S Mount Washington are geared toward the best leaf-peeping opportunities, sailing around Lake Winnipesaukee in New Hampshire. Boat trips are scheduled daily from mid-September until mid-October in 2020, and possibly longer depending on the duration of the foliage.

For a more immersive trip, the Maine Windjammer Association sails out on the Atlantic Coast for multi-day trips. You'll be able to travel along the scenic Maine coast and even further up into Canada, depending on which tour you choose and the number of days. Each day includes about six hours of sailing time, after which you'll drop anchor and be able to explore a local fishing village or uninhabited island in order to fully take in the scenery.

Best Aerial Tours for Adventurous Leaf Peepers

Alan Majchrowicz / Getty Images

It's one thing to pick up the prettiest fallen leaves that catch your eye, but you could also soar above the foliage, tickling the treetops. Several aerial adventures offer the chance to do exactly that. When you set sail on a fall hot air balloon flight with Above Reality Hot Air Balloon Rides , for example, you'll enjoy views few other leaf peepers will never experience. This tour company flies regularly from its home base in Essex Junction (near Burlington ), Vermont. All balloon cabins are reserved for private groups in 2020, making this one of the most thrilling ways to maintain social distance this fall.

more information about usa hiking vacations

What is a hiking vacation.

A hiking vacation or multi-day hiking tour can naturally take many different forms, but for most travelers it’s a trip to a new or return destination to hike, explore, learn and discover. Some of the most popular destinations in the U.S.A. for a hiking vacation are:

  • Desert Southwest: Grand Canyon, Southern Utah, Sedona, Death Valley, Joshua Tree, Capitol Reef, Paria Canyon, and more
  • Sierra Nevadas Mountains: Yosemite, Eastern Sierras, Sequoia-Kings Canyon and more
  • Pacific Northwest: Mountain Rainier, Olympic National Park, North Cascades National Park and more
  • Rocky Mountains: Yellowstone, Rocky Mountain National Park, Glacier National Park and more
  • Appalachia: Great Smoky Mountains National Park, Blue Ridge Mountains and more

camp or accommodations?

Many travelers choose to camp on hiking vacations in the U.S., but staying in accommodations can also be a great option, without necessarily detracting from the level of adventure of a multi-day hiking tour. Accommodations in the U.S. normally are hotels and lodges, with an outside of chance of finding yurt accommodations (semi-permanent, framed, soft-sided structures).

NATIONAL PARKS, STATE PARKS, UNITED STATES FOREST SERVICE AND BUREAU OF LAND MANAGEMENT

Generally speaking, your vaction will most likely be to one or more national parks , state parks , United States Forest Service (USFS) lands, or Bureau of Land Management (BLM) lands. Most visitors will head to national parks, but the other areas should not be overlooked. Some of the most amazing hiking vacations in the USA are on USFS and BLM lands. A basic breakdown of each, and their differences, is provided here:

  • National Parks: these are the big name destinations like Grand Canyon National Park, Yosemite, Yellowstone, the Great Smoky Mountains…etc. They are highly regulated, amazingly well maintained wild refuges throughout the United States. Any overnight camping and backpacking will require permits; dogs are not allowed; and advanced planning is highly recommended.
  • State Parks: these lands are often much smaller than the national parks (like less than 1% the size on average), but there are some wonderful state parks that offer fantastic trekking experiences. For example, the Northern California coast is mostly comprised of state parks that offer stunning views and excellent coastal hiking.
  • USFS Lands: the Western USA is made up of millions of square miles of USFS lands, and they are some of the most breathtaking and expansive wilderness left in the USA and the world. These areas often do not require permits and are more lightly regulated than the national parks. Dogs are allowed on most USFS lands.
  • BLM: these lands are sometimes amazing, sometimes not, sometimes pristine, sometimes riddled with roads, mines and/or other extractive industry activity like drilling. These lands are the least regulated and least visited, which means they can be home to some surprisingly amazing secret gem areas. Dogs are allowed.

walking in the desert

Many trekking vacations in the USA will be in the Southwestern part of the country, where desert ecosystems prevail. This region is home to the Mojave, Sonoran, Chihuahuan and Great Basin deserts. Characterized by low levels of precipitation, hot summer temperatures and mild winter temperatures, deserts can make for wonderful winter hiking vacations. They can also be great in the spring and fall. It’s recommended to avoid deserts in the summer months unless you’re well prepared for the high temperatures and dry conditions. Also, any time you’re walking in the desert (but especially if it’s in the summer), it’s imperative to be aware of common medical conditions such as heat stroke and hyponatremia , and how to avoid them.

walking in the mountains

The USA is home to a staggering number of different mountain ranges, from the Rocky Mountains to the Sierras, Appalachians, Cascades, Allegheny’s, Smokies, Asheville Area , White Mountains…etc. And within one major range, like the Rocky Muntains, there are subranges like the San Juans, Sangre de Christos, Missions, Crazies, Flat Tops , Wind Rivers…etc. And many of America’s most famous national parks are in the mountains, like Yellowstone, Yosemite, Mount Rainier, Rocky Mountain, Great Smoky Mountains and many others.

Generally speaking, walking in the mountains is best in the late spring, summer and fall months. Often the early spring is still quite snowy in the mountains, and snow begins to fall again usually in mid to late fall. The summer months are prime time for most mountain visits. Be aware of afternoon thunderstorms and not getting caught out in the open (such as above treeline) if thunderstorms roll in. And be prepared for sudden and extreme weather shifts – a day in the mountains can begin warm and clear and within a couple hours be dark, cold, windy and rainy.

walking on the coasts

Of course the coasts, both west and east, offer incredible trekking opportunities. With national parks like Olympic National Park and Acadia National Park in the east, hugging the coasts, there are fantastic on-foot adventures to be had. When hiking on the coasts, be aware of tides and slippery, treacherous sections of walking. Being caught in a tidal zone when the tide roles back in can be a mistake you’ll never have a chance of repeating, so plan ahead, talk to experts, or join guided hikes with expert trip leaders.
