In this study, orcharding activity is emphasized. Until a few years economy of Isparta is named with it‟s waved carpets by hand, rose-growing and rose-oil extraction. But in the last years orcharding activities attract attention as the most important economical activity in Isparta. Especially in Egirdir, Gelendost, Senirkent and Yalvac Province, many kinds of fruits, specifically apple and cheery are grown in the aim of commercial. Physical Geography features of Isparta have an important potential for developing of orcharding activities. Suitable climate conditions, fertile soil and fresh water sources over or under the earth in Isparta are distinctive elements of this potential. In addition to this, irrigation projects, modern agriculture techniques, using of quality and resistible fruit kinds, correctly performing of fertilization, pruning and disinfecting are human activities effecting developing of orcharding activities. Moreover, establishment of modern cold stores and cold stores with high capacity in the near of land where fruits grown are regarded as an important factor increasing the value of fruits grown in Isparta in the national and international markets. So developing of commercial orcharding is both gaining importance as profitable activity and also creating employment in storing, packaging, collecting and transportation process for rural area in Isparta. Thus, in this study it is emphasized on current development of orcharding, distribution of amount of apple, cherry, grape and other fruits production, reason of this distribution and problems in orcharding in Isparta. In addition to formal data, it is evaluated via findings obtained during land study in Bogazova, Uluborlu-Senirkent Plain and Gelendost Plain that orcharding activity is the most important activity. Indigenous Technical Knowledge (ITK) is specifically concerned with actual application of the thinking of the local people in various operations of agriculture and allied areas. Indigenous information systems are dynamic, and are continually influenced by internal creativity and experimentation as well as by contact with external systems. Indian farmers, over centuries have learnt to grow food and to survive in difficult environments, where rich tradition of ITK has been interwoven with the agricultural practices followed by them. India is rich in traditional farming systems because of diversity in agro-ecological habitats inhabited by diverse ethnic groups who have been practicing age-old farming in location specific situations since generations. It encompasses the skills, experiences and insights of people, applied to maintain or improve their livelihood. Indigenous agricultural practices (IAPs) are adopting to reduce dependence on external inputs, to reduce the cost of cultivation and to propagate eco-friendly agriculture. To the maximum extent possible, organic farming systems rely upon crop rotations, crop residues, animal manures, legumes, green manures, off-farm organic wastes, mechanical cultivation, mineral bearing rock powders and biological pest control etc. Organic fruit production essentially excludes the use of many inputs associated with modern farming, most notably synthetic pesticides and fertilizers. It lies in a simple principle of utilizing cheap and local inputs with zero utilization of chemicals in any form like fertilizer, herbicide, pesticide, antibiotic, hormone etc. Here in this context we are discussing some of ITK practices which are following in fruit crops in India.

The main purpose of a High-intensity cultivation system is to maximize the yield crop per area unit through planting more trees, exploiting efficient use of different resources. There are different factors that affect high-intensity cultivation that includes Land-cost, planting spaces, tree size, Rootstock, and Practice management. Meanwhile, the adoption of High-intensity cultivation to control canopy size, by using modern management practices is very crucial to get more yields in the early stages of the orchard besides simplicity in its management and increase the farmers’ net profit. In addition, High-density cultivation is used in different fruit crops like olive, mango, orange, mandarin, apple, and cherry. Numerous benefits of intensive fruit cultivation include increasing fruit yield per unit area, improving use efficiency of natural resources e.g. soil, light, water, and nutrients, enhancing fruit quality, improving soil properties, and rising levels of organic carbon and nutrients in plant tissues …etc. In addition, it is very effective in acid lime soil and achieves high income for the farmers.

ABSTRACT There is an urgent need to adopt technology innovation in perennial fruit crops for increasing production and ensuring quality. It is mainly due to less availability of labour and high cost incurred in it. Technological innovations appear under-utilised in many fruit tree crops, whereas viticulture, citriculture and vegetable crops have largely automated in planting, pruning, thinning and harvesting and integrated GPS or GIS in their cultivation practices. Innovation and technology is required to overcome shading, particularly in the lower part of the tree canopy. To overcome light deficiency, reflective ground covers (textile, alluminium and paper), organic alternatives (lime, straw) as well as titanium dioxide and bio-degradable white line marker paint with additives are used. To combat sunburn, kaolin and carnauba-wax and other products are available; this can be combined with evaporative cooling. Mechanization includes new machinery for mechanical thinning, pruning and harvesting which help to save labour. Mechanical pruning has numerous advantages over classical pruning, such as enabling control over the tree size and providing mechanization in large and dense orchards that where hand pruning is difficult and expensive. Mechanical pruning is widely used in developed countries for many horticultural crops. More and more the techniques associated with mechanical harvesting that are necessary to achieve quality in small fruit crops and grapes and their products are being discovered. Meadow Orcharding and ultra-high density planting are modern methods of fruit cultivation using dwarf tree with modified canopy. Better light distribution within tree canopy promotes the rate of photosynthesis that leads to high yield per unit area.Management of the orchard floor in fruit crops can influence the effectiveness of irrigation, fertility, disease and insect management practices. Producing economic yields with high-quality fruits in large scale cultivation requires judicious management of all factors with adoption of new innovative techniques. This retrospective study was conducted in four districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa namely Charsadda, Nowshera, Mardan and Peshawar during January February, 2013 to examine the status and factors affecting fruit orchards. A total of Sixty four fruit orchards growers were interviewed on the basis of land acquisition. Data indicates that farmer areas for citrus and planted Stone fruit such as peach, plum and apricot were declined in the last 10 years while the area under pear and loquat were increased. The study results also indicate that a number of factors were affecting fruit orchards. These problems were ranked as (1) diseases/insects, followed by (2) high price, (3) water shortage problem, (4) adulteration in inputs, (5) marketing problem and (6) non-availability of credit. It is concluded that various factors are responsible for the decline in production of fruit orchards. It is thus, recommended that agriculture department should regularly disseminate technical-know-how regarding improved fruit orchards management practices through training, field days and workshop and other awareness programmes for fruit orchards growers. The government should also keep check and balance on price and quality of inputs to encourage fruit orchard growers to increase their production.

US farmers expect to plant less corn and more soybean acres

WASHINGTON, March 28, 2024 – Producers surveyed across the United States intend to plant 90.0 million acres of corn in 2024, down 5% from last year, according to the Prospective Plantings report released today by USDA’s National Agricultural Statistics Service (NASS).

Planted acreage intentions for corn are down or unchanged in 38 of the 48 estimating states. Acreage decreases of 300,000 acres or more from last year are expected in Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Ohio, South Dakota, and Texas. If realized, the planted area of corn in Arizona and Oregon will be the largest on record.

Soybean growers intend to plant 86.5 million acres in 2024, up 3% from last year. Acreage increases from last year of 100,000 or more are expected in Arkansas, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Louisiana, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, North Dakota, Ohio, and South Dakota. Record high acreage is expected in Kentucky and New York.

The Prospective Plantings report provides the first official, survey-based estimates of U.S. farmers’ 2024 planting intentions. NASS’s acreage estimates are based on surveys conducted during the first two weeks of March from a sample of nearly 72,000 farm operators across the nation. Other key findings in the report are:

• All wheat planted area for 2024 is estimated at 47.5 million acres, down 4% for comparable states from 2023.
• Winter wheat planted area, at 34.1 million acres, is down 1% from the previous estimate and down 7% from last year for comparable states.
• Area planted to other spring wheat for 2024 is expected to total 11.3 million acres, up 1% from 2023.
• Durum wheat planted is expected to total 2.03 million acres for 2024, up 22% from last year for comparable states.
• All cotton planted area for 2024 is expected to total 10.7 million acres, 4% above last year.

Today, NASS also released the quarterly Grain Stocks report to provide estimates of on-farm and off-farm stocks as of March 1. Key findings in that report include:

• Corn stocks totaled 8.35 billion bushels, up 13% from the same time last year. On-farm corn stocks were up 24% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were down 1%.
• Soybeans stored totaled 1.85 billion bushels, up 9% from March 1, 2023. On-farm soybean stocks were up 24% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks were down 3%.
• All wheat stored totaled 1.09 billion bushels, up 16% from a year ago. On-farm all wheat stocks were up 20% from last year, while off-farm stocks were up 14%.
• Durum wheat stored totaled 36.6 million bushels, up 2% from March 1, 2023. On-farm Durum stocks were up 10% from a year ago, while off-farm stocks of Durum wheat were down 5%.

NASS will hold its biannual Data Users’ Meeting on April 16, 2024. The event will be at the University of Chicago Gleacher Center in Chicago, IL. A virtual attendance option will also be available. The meeting is free and open to the public.
