Our team has designed this cruise to show you some of Iceland’s remarkable wonders of nature created by geothermal activity, such as spurting geysers, continental plates and thundering waterfalls. As well as being a great time for whale-watching, we’ve planned your visit to give you a chance to see puffins, and representatives from wildlife charity ORCA will be on board to help you spot birds and cetaceans from your ship. Borealis will cruise Iceland’s longest fjord, past its northernmost inhabited land, and by Borgarfjörður Eystri, home to elves, according to local folklore. You can also uncover the way of life in the remote Westfjörds; witness the powerful Goðafoss Waterfall, and enjoy a visit to the Faroe Islands.

Volcanic Vistas

Iceland boasts over 100 spectacular waterfalls, which have been created by a combination of mountain glaciers and the country’s position across the Eurasian and North American tectonic plates. Each waterfall is unique and on this Borealis cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to join us on a tour to see the beautiful Goðafoss Waterfall, one of the biggest in Iceland and known as the ‘Waterfall of the Gods’. No visit to Iceland is complete without embarking upon the Golden Circle Tour, taking in the magnificent Gullfoss Waterfall, Thingvellir National Park – where you can witness the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates as they meet, and the spouting hot geysirs at Strokkur. Geologist Glynda Easterbrook will join you on board and will deliver talks on the volcanoes of Iceland as well as its infamous geysirs and glaciers.

Icelandic Identity

Sólveig Dagmar Þórisdóttir, Reykjavik local, will be joining you on board this cruise to speak about the way of life in Iceland. Outdoor activities are particularly revered here, with a focus on spending time in nature, such as hiking, horse-riding and fishing. The country also offers a unique wellness experience with its abundance of geothermal spas and hot springs set amongst remarkable natural landscapes. Join a tour to the Blue Lagoon and relax in the warm mineral-rich waters as the steam and lava landscape create a memorable atmosphere.  

Whale watching

The waters of northern Iceland are prime feeding grounds for cetaceans, as a volcanic fissure in the ocean ground allows heat to filter up from the deep, attracting zooplankton and krill, which flourish in the mix of warm and cold currents of sheltered Eyjafjörður, Iceland’s longest fjord. It may be possible for you to spot minke and humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins or harbour porpoises from Borealis’ decks, with the assistance of wildlife charity, ORCA; or join a tour to go whale watching with a Marine Biologist, who will share their knowledge of years of tracking these enigmatic creatures, providing you with a fascinating insight into their lives.

Explore the geothermal area surrounding Mount Hengill, an active volcano that last erupted 2,000 years ago. Visit Hellisheiði Geothermal Power Plant, Hveragerði, a town located on top of an old magma chamber, and Þingvellir National Park.

I'm travelling alone, how will I get to meet people?

Our single guests feel right at home on board our ships; Fred. Olsen have the reputation of sailing the friendliest fleet afloat. 

How do I get off the ship if we're at anchor?

Disembarking when your ship's at anchor is a very different experience to when it's docked portside. Getting ashore in this instance often involves the use of the ship's tender, which is accessed via the steps of a secure gangway.

Known as the cruise capital of Europe, the Port of Southampton is a passenger and cargo port located in the central part of the south coast of England. There are four dedicated cruise terminals at Southampton which play host to a wide variety of cruise lines. Southampton is one of the most lively and dynamic cities in the south of England. From bustling shops and marinas to seaside resorts and areas of outstanding natural beauty, the city and region have lots to offer.

Day 2 Greenock, Scotland

Greenock, formerly a burgh in the historic county of Renfrewshire, is a town and administrative center in the Inverclyde council area in Scotland, United Kingdom. Along with Gourock to the west and Port Glasgow to the east, it makes up a continuous urban area. Glasgow is Scotland's largest city and is renowned for its culture, style and the friendliness of its people. It's also famed for its Victorian and art nouveau architecture, a rich legacy of the city's 18th-20th-century prosperity due to trade and shipbuilding. Greenock is industrial town and port, hemmed in by hills. Main town attractions are: Town Hall, Custom House, churches, Sheriff Court, various mansions and the Watt Monument Library. Underheugh Cottage, is a working smallholding that is completely self-reliant. The owners organize various activities such as pig-keeping lessons, nature walks, gardening courses and the opportunity to dress up like an ancient Scottish.

Stornoway is the main town of the Western Isles and the capital of Lewis and Harris in Scotland. Stornoway is an important port and the major town and administrative centre of the Outer Hebrides. Stornoway offers a warm welcome to anyone choosing to visit Lewis as part of their Outer Hebridean explorations. Strolling along the quay at Stornoway Harbour and hearing the shouts of the fishermen, visiting the historic Lews Castle and the adjoining Lews Castle Museum and Archive, a key cultural centre for Outer Hebrides heritage, are among things visitors can experience. Should Travelers Take a Cruise to See the 2026 Solar Eclipse?

T he 2026 solar eclipse is set to occur on August 12th, 2026. As Europe’s first total solar eclipse in 27 years, there is a healthy amount of interest in the breathtaking (and fleeting) eclipse. But solar eclipses cannot be seen from anywhere which means that some people are located in less than ideal locations. This unfortunate complication has led to a spike in what some call Astro-tourism , traveling for the best views to stargaze. Some travelers have taken to the idea of getting on a cruise to get the best unobstructed views of the 2026 eclipse. 

A cruise journey to view the eclipse may be the solution to high travel costs in Europe or for travelers not interested in staying abroad. The convenience of cruises may be ideal for a vacation planned around an astronomical event. Cruises allow travelers to sit back and relax while their transportation is taken care of. Travelers can even purchase rooms with patio views where they can lounge out and relax with their eclipse glasses. Many cruise lines are adding or marketing their current cruises to be eclipse-viewing cruises. There have been eclipse cruises in the past, so travelers will have everything they need to enjoy the alignment. 

Cruise Options for the 2026 Eclipse 

These European cruises are the best journeys for travelers to see the eclipse of 2026. There are shorter-term sailing cruises and long-term cruises, so travelers have good options. Travelers can even choose from a warm eclipse-viewing vacation or a chilly getaway. 

Princess Cruises 

Princess Cruises has already claimed that they will have a cruise that will sail through Spain during the time of the eclipse. The cruise is set to be on their Sky Princess ship, which is contemporarily designed and has next-level touchless technology. Travelers interested in Princess Cruises should check their website on May 23rd, 2024. This is when they will announce more information on their cruises that have viewing opportunities. 

Cunard Line 

Three of Cunard’s ships will be in alignment with the eclipse. Travelers who want peak views of the event can choose from different travel destinations. The Queen Anne ship embarks on a seven-night cruise through Spanish and French ports. Travelers who prefer warmer temperatures are bound to enjoy this journey on the cruise line’s newest ship. The cruise departs from Southampton, England and goes on to explore the four different destinations. On the day of the eclipse, the ship will dock at La Coruña, which is on the northwest coast of Spain. 

Cunard also offers a week-long western Mediterranean cruise on the Queen Victoria ship. The ship will depart from Civitavecchia, Rome on August 10th, 2026. By the day of the eclipse, August 12th, travelers will be exploring Tarragona, Spain. Travelers can witness the eclipse while exploring the port or view it while relaxing onboard. 

If travelers appreciate chillier weather, there’s a 14-night voyage that begins in Southampton, England and ends in New York. This journey will begin on August 4th and end on August 18th of 2026. Travelers will be able to explore Iceland and Norway on the Cunard cruise. On the day of the eclipse, travelers will be in Reykjavik, Iceland , a fishing village with stunning landscapes. 

Holland America 

The Holland America cruise line is also planning to have multiple sailings around the eclipse. These cruises will follow the popular 2024 eclipse cruises. Travelers can expect to hear more details about the three European sailings at a later date. 

Albatross Expeditions 

This cruise line is a polar cruise operator, which often has sailings around Antarctica. Albatros will have an Arctic cruise during the eclipse. This 13-day journey will explore West Greenland, which is a great viewing destination. The cruise departs on August 10th from Reykjavik, Iceland and returns in Kangerlussuaq, Greenland.
