Foy Vance: new album and UK and Irish tour dates

Foy Vance

Foy Vance will embark on an extensive European tour later this summer, with the UK dates commencing on August 30 at York Barbican and culminating September 9 at Belfast SSE Arena, Vance’s first Arena show in his native Northern Ireland.

The tour follows the 2021 release of Vance’s fourth studio album Signs Of Life , while 2022 marks the 15th anniversary of his 2007 full-length debut Hope . To celebrate the anniversary Hope will be available on vinyl for the very first time. The album is being reissued on double red vinyl with artwork from the original CD packaging and will include two new acoustic versions of songs from the album. Pre-order here .

Comments Vance: “As this year marks the 15-year anniversary of my debut album Hope, we’ve decided to put together a special set that highlights both Hope and Signs of Life, alongside other favourites. Hope to see you there. Have I said Hope enough? Hope.”

Last month, Foy performed ‘Be With Me’ from Hope and ‘Signs of Life’, the title track from his new album, for the Stern Show on SiriusXM in Los Angeles. He then returned to the UK to perform at Black Deer Festival in Kent.

Vance recently collaborated with Rag’n’Bone Man on the single ‘Sapling’, a powerful new version of the opening track on Signs Of Life .  Watch a soulful live performance of ‘Sapling’ by Foy and Rag’n’Bone Man filmed at Vance’s Pilgrim Studio in Aberfeldy in Highland Perthshire below.

The follow-up to 2016’s critically acclaimed  The Wild Swan, Signs Of Life is Vance’s fourth studio album and second on Gingerbread Man Records. Hailing from Bangor in Northern Ireland, Vance has headlined globally to sell-out crowds and splits his time between London and the Scottish Highlands with his family.

Music review

Hope Peace and Love, She Burns

Folk singer-songwriter Foy Vance continues the European leg of his tour with an evening of ballads at the Hammersmith Apollo. The Irish vocalist, who is signed onto Ed Sheeran’s Gingerbread Man label, performs tracks from debut album Hope (marking its 15-year anniversary) along with songs from Signs of Life .

Acoustic-electric opener Treading the Water is a beautiful melody that builds into a crescendo, showcasing Vance’s signature style. Things get livelier with Hope, Peace and Love , an early highlight, where a guitar loop is incorporated, Vance playing the drums and simultaneously singing, displaying his talents as a multi-instrumentalist. The evening’s guests also include The Late Heavy and Gareth Dunlop, who join the singer for Signs of Life , taken from the 2021 eponymous studio album.

The stage is simple tonight, with two long beams on either side that change colour intermittently while sticks of incense burn on the piano. Roman Attack is reminiscent of acts such as The War on Drugs and early Bruce Springsteen. Disappointingly though, all Vance’s chat is lost within the walls of the Apollo, but, despite the indiscernible anecdotes, the music manages to remain clear.

Captivated is not a word that comes to mind regarding this show; glancing at the faces, it is clear a lot of the crowd are unmoved and even bored. This changes considerably when surprise guest Rag ‘n’ Bone Man appears on-stage, and there is a definite shift in the stalls and overall atmosphere. Performing a duet of Sapling , Vance at the piano again, Rag ‘n’ Bone Man reminds the audience of his memorable baritone. She Burns is another highlight, a favourite song with many fans, and one that resounds gorgeously in the auditorium.

On the whole, the effect would have been better if Vance had faced the audience at the piano so that he could have been seen. Tonight’s performance is not as engaging as one would hope but it had the potential to be. These are good songs, but a lot of the tunes blend and leave more to be desired.

The encore includes Indiscriminate Act of Kindness and  Guiding Light , which would befit a honky-tonk bar – unsurprising, given a lot of Vance’s music echoes Americana. If only the preceding show had not been so tame.

Foy Vance set for biggest headline gig at SSE "homecoming" concert

"It's a bit of a throwdown, a jamboree and a celebration so it going to be fun"

  • 19:01, 4 SEP 2022

Foy Vance

Co Down singer-songwriter Foy Vance has said returning to Belfast always feels like a "homecoming" as he prepares for his biggest headline gig at the SSE Arena.

The Bangor talent is set to perform to his home crowd on September 9 as part of his European tour, taking his latest album 'Signs of Life' on the road for the first time.

The 48-year-old spoke to Belfast Live about performing in Belfast, lockdown and Bangor's newfound city status playing havoc on his song titles after kicking off the tour in York on Tuesday.

Foy said: "It's been good - this is the tour that I had to postpone for an amalgamation of reasons so it's been great to get back out on the road and stand on stage and apologise.

"It was a lot of fun. You know those cars that you used to pull back and then they zoomed off - it feels like that car has been pulled back for so long that people were right out of the gate like whippets from the start of the night to the end and were ready to sing and get involved."

Released in September 2021, 'Signs of Life' is the second of Foy's albums to will be released on Ed Sheeran’s Gingerbread Man Records, following his 2016 album, 'The Wild Swan'.

Signs Of Life is the sound of a beloved singer-songwriter at the peak of his powers. It’s also the sound of a man – a husband, a father, a sinner, a drinker – belatedly coming to terms with his demons.

"I released The Wild Swan and as is the way of it, I started looking at other songs that could be ready for another album but I was sort of struggling because I didn't really want to go on tour again at the time and these songs that I was compiling for a new album were songs I wrote a long time ago and it didn't feel relevant," he explained.

"Then Armageddon happened and Covid hit and something about the stillness of that period and being in the studio on my own every day by default not design was an influence that made me really dig deep and look for signs of life because they were hard to see at that point.

"I'm excited about getting these songs in front of a crowd with a full new band. The Late Heavy are the band that opens and then Gareth Dunlop is on after and basically, every one of them are on stage by the end of the night."

Foy has no idea what taking to Northern Ireland's biggest stage will have in store for him but he can guarantee fans a well-deserved night out after the past two years.

He added: "It's a bit of a throwdown, a jamboree and a celebration so it going to be fun. As to what it will actually feel like to play that room, I have no idea - it could feel incredible or it could feel like playing an airport hanger."

On what it feels like to perform back home after touring the world, Foy said: "It is a homecoming. That is what it feels like.

"They are the people that packed me up and sent me on the boat and wished me luck - telling me to go and do something and make something and we will be here when you come back. And every time I do come back, there they are with their singing voices and warm hugs and handshakes.

"I am very much looking forward to getting back."

Foy recently got a little taster of what is to be expected at his SSE Arena gig when he took to the stage to perform with fellow Co Down musician Ryan McMullan as his headline show at CHSq 2022.

Foy Vance and Ryan McMullan as part of the band in Derry Girls

"I met Ryan about seven or eight years ago and I started working alongside him when he would play The Cloth Ear on a Friday night and now he's headlining Custom House Square - it's pretty impressive. It was a great show to be at and a great honour to be involved with it," he explained.

After taking on Belfast, Foy heads on to a number of other European cities including Paris and Berlin but the musician told Belfast Live he is going to take a different approach to life on the road this time around.

Foy continued: "I'm trying to look after myself better because I'm getting to that age now where I can't go party like I used to so I spend my days going on hikes and walking trails. I used to be a road dog for this, on the road for eight months of the year but lockdown has changed that.

"I never used to enjoy seeing the countries I was in because I would sit up to all hours so I'm trying to change it up this time and see the places that I am at as much as I possibly can."

In response to being asked how he feels about Bangor's new city status as one of the songs of his first album is called 'Bangor Town', Foy joked, "My lawyers are on the case already."

"We are going to get it changed back to Bangor town because I don't want to change my song - Bangor city just doesn't work as well or sing as nice."

Foy Vance is a singer and songwriter hailing from the land of Bangor, Northern Ireland. Deeply rooted in the rich musical history and aesthetic of the Southern United States, Foy independently released his debut album Hope in 2007, quickly garnering acclaim from fans and fellow musicians alike. Foy released his second full-length album, Joy of Nothing, in 2013 on Glassnote Records which led to further critical praise and star-studded invites on tours worldwide from the likes of Ed Sheeran, Bonnie Raitt, Marcus Foster, Snow Patrol and Sir Elton John.

Foy was only the second artist signing to Gingerbread Man Records, Ed Sheeran’s label division within Atlantic Records. Foy’s debut recording on Gingerbread Man Records, The Wild Swan, was Executive Produced by Sir Elton John and released in 2016. His music video for the lead single “She Burns” featured “Pretty Little Liars” and People’s Choice Award winner Lucy Hale. His music video for “Coco” featured the inspiration for the song title, Coco Arquette, the daughter of Courteney Cox and David Arquette, and was directed by Cox as well.

Foy’s recent collaborations include “Moonshine” with Kacey Musgraves, the end credits track from Ben Affleck’s film “Live By Night,” four tracks including “Galway Girl” on Ed Sheeran’s latest album ÷, as well as cuts on recent releases by Miranda Lambert, Plan B and Rudimental.

Foy has headlined globally to sell-out crowds and resides in the hills of Aberfeldy, Scotland with his family.

Live-Bewertungen

I came expecting to see Foy belt out hits from his new album. I was treated to so much more. I was blown away.

The venue, Rough Trade, NYC was intimate with great sound. I was literally 2 feet away from the stage. It's the closest I have ever been to a performer in my 20 years of concert going.

Trevor Sensor opened up and he did a great job warming up the crowd. He appeared a tad goofy on stage but really got the audience in the right mood. He reminded me of Bob Dylan and offered up some great songs that were well arranged and performed.

When Foy stepped on stage, I was only expecting to hear The Wild Swan songs as I heard he was only doing new stuff this tour. When he opened with "Closed Hand Full Of Friends" I was beyond pleased.

Throughout the evening Foy did did stay the course playing his new stuff, but occasionally slipped in a few older favorites as well. The audience was tuned in and sang along to many of his participation songs, which seems to be pretty much everything he sings.

I was surprised to see him bring Ella up onstage for a few tracks. It was really sweet and I am glad he has his family with him, considering the length or his touring. The highlight of the night was when he sung "you and I" to her onstage. It was such an sweet moment.

On top of his hits, Foy even did a few ad lib tracks and even songs I never heard of, (possibly new(er) stuff or covers). It was unexpected since he has more than enough songs in his wheel house.

Overall, I could not have asked for a better night. It was well worth the 4 hour travel time and I would recommend this tour to anyone looking to have a great evening.

How can you not love a guitar playing, handlebar moustache sporting, singing Irishman? Foy Vance deserves much more recognition than he already has, and hopefully will gain more from his 2013 signing with Glassnote Records.

His live shows are pretty simple, in the best way possible. He’s got a dummer, a bassist, his guitar and a mic. His voice is so strong and has just the perfect amount of raspiness to it. His lyrics are about real life, but when you hear him live you get so much more. Since he writes all of his songs, there is a specific emotion behind all of the lyrics, and when you get to see him live, you get to experience all of it. You get to feel his excitement, his love, and his passion, things that don’t quite come through as much in his studio versions.

He was the supporting act for Ed Sheeran, so most of the crowd consisted of a lot of young girls. This meant that most of the excitement during his set was when Ed Sheeran came to join him for his song “Guiding Light.” Otherwise, most of the girls didn’t seem to have a whole lot of interest, which was really quite sad because his was my favorite act of the night.

Northern Irish folk musician Foy Vance has made quite a name for himself in a career that is less than a decade old. Touring with Ed Sheeran and appearing on a variety of TV shows has opened his music to a wider audience and keeps the demand to see Foy play live very high.

The northern Irish musician is more than happy to oblige with a sheer dedication to tour around to reach all the fanbase. He is the most at home on a stage with his trusty acoustic guitar and he seems to have found his true sound in the form of sophomore album 'Joy of Nothing'. The somber lyrics pairing against the stomping chord lines may contrast pretty dramatically at times however the sounds go down well with the enthusiastic crowd. He thanks them sincerely and highlights that despite not selling millions of albums, the ability to head out and tour is what keeps him impassioned and excited for his music. An endearing performance of 'Shed a Little Light' from the debut closes the night well and brings things full circle in a sense.

Foy Vance was incredible tonight! So many great songs, an amazing cover of Never Tear Us Apart and a tear jerking Purple Rain, a raucous crowd brought to silence by Guiding Light and a rousing call to get Foy back on for an encore that he ended singing unmic'd as the crowd hummed the final strains of Wild Swans - the only sounds in the room- PLUS a shoutout to the solo girl with a head cold and pink hair (yeah, that was me... it's just aqua now) BEST CONCERT THIS YEAR

Cassafrass80’s profile image

The show was incredible and beoga (the warm up act) could easily have been the main act. The sound at the palladium is second to none. All of foys songs are really interactive and when beoga came on stage with foy the combination of everyone (foy Vance, beoga, Niall McCabe and Ryan McMullan) gave an amazing atmosphere. Would definitely recommend to anyone and will definitely be going to another!

callumwilliams10’s profile image

A unique talent. Great songwriter, tons of soul, real stage presence. While the show was really good, a couple of things would have made it better. The sound was muddied up by a nearly toneless bass. And the set was almost exclusively off the new album. Understand this is kind of a promotional tour but play some of the stuff that brought the fans out in the first place too.

Saw Foy Vance at The Globe in Cardiff - really small venue, but perfect for his music. He was a really great entertainer as well as a really captive performer. His set was a great mix of his classics, beautiful melodic pieces and upbeat music! Awesome musician as he moved around singing, playing the piano and the guitar. Really enjoyed and would really recommend.

Foy Vange and his musicians wetter excellent as always connecting with the audience and involving them in the gig. Ryan Mcmu mullen was also excellent as the support act, reminding us of Foy Vace circa 10 years ago when he supported Taj Mahal at DeMontfort Hall in Leicester.

One of the most unforgettable performamces that I have witnessed during my lifetime as a Denver native. You don't have many chances to see A musician as talented as Foy Vance, in an intimate setting like the Bluebird. Hats off to a AEG Live!

Foy Vance announces series of 'You and I Shows' at the Grand Opera House

An evening of music & satire, plus a specially curated set from Foy!

Foy Vance has today announced a series of special shows at the Grand Opera House, Belfast later this year, featuring a special comedy guest each night.

These shows will take place from 5th-9th November 2024 and will also include an all request set by Foy, curated by the audience.

Diona Doherty, Shane Todd and James McKegney will take part.

How to get tickets:

Tickets on sale Thursday 28th March at 10am via goh.co.uk

Hailing from Northern Ireland and deeply rooted in the rich musical history of the Southern United States, Foy Vance has garnered acclaim from fans and fellow musicians alike since his independent debut album release in 2007.

Foy was the second artist signed to Gingerbread Man Records, Ed Sheeran’s label division within Atlantic Records. Foy’s debut recording with the label, The Wild Swan, was Executive Produced by Sir Elton John and released in 2016.

In 2019, Foy released two companion albums, From Muscle Shoals and To Memphis, recorded at FAME Studios in Muscle Shoals, Alabama and Sam Phillips Recording Studio in Memphis.

His songwriting credits include co-writing four cuts on Ed Sheeran’s 2017 album Divide, the title track on Sam Smith’s latest album Gloria and collaborations with Alicia Keys, Rag N Bone Man, Keith Urban, Kacey Musgraves, Miranda Lambert, Plan B and Rudimental.

Foy Vance's 2021 album, Signs Of Life, marked Foy’s second studio album ‘proper’ on Gingerbread Man Records and was a testament to his abilities as a songwriter. The thoughtful and poignant album was written and played more or less entirely by Vance, with assistance from young Northern Irish producer Gareth Dunlop, and received global recognition.

Last year, Foy embarked on his Regarding The Joy of Nothing Tour across the US, UK, and Australia to celebrate the 10 year anniversary of the album.

This year, he’ll be heading out on the road once again to play songs from one of his most impactful album’s in Europe and Scandinavia.

Comments Foy:

“It is hard to believe it has been 10 years since releasing the Joy of Nothing. Thanks to all of you that have listened to it. To those of you that have shared stories with me of what the album has meant to you, oftentimes opening my eyes to sides of the songs that I never knew existed. It’s hard to articulate how much it means to have created something that you can inhabit just as well as I can. Regarding The Joy of Nothing… well it still exists and there is joy in it yet…here’s to the next decade of ’naught and everything’.”
