Very Reliable

Spacious, dependable, minimal maintenance required besides routine (oil change, tires, etc.) Excellent for traveling long distances with a family. Enough room to spread out. I tow a 12' utility trailer loaded with a side by side and don't know it's even there except when I stop for gas. Wish they still made the Excursion for I would buy another one.

2001 Ford Excursion XLT

Best vehicle design ever made.

No SUV/Truck has ever been designed so well. Newer vehicle designs are a disappointment in comparison. Here is why: built strong as a tank with 3/4 ton suspension, 10k+ lb towing, sterling rear axle, and Dana 50 front axle with steering stabilizer, 310 HP 425-ft-lbs of torque V10. Large vehicle with great visibility (no blindspots), seats up to 8 or 9 full size adults comfortably. Four wheel disk brakes, auto locking hubs (can also be manual locked), 4WD with locking front and rear axles. 60/40 middle row seats can fold down flat or slide forward, third row seat can fold down or can easily be removed or reinstalled in about 10 seconds. Can fit 4' x 8' plywood or drywall with second and third row seats folded. Plenty of trunk space even when all three rows of seats are occupied, convenient slide out cup holders in front, plus several extra cup holders, large deep storage console, electric side rear glass windows can be opened individually for extra ventilation. Electric heated sideview mirrors, exterior temperature, compass, fuel mileage gauges. Large heavy duty front tow hooks. Stainless exhaust. Tows trailers effortlessly. High ground clearance. Separate front and rear heat/ac and controls.

We can get 8 people in it in comfort, haul our 9,000 lb Center Console boat, travel 418 miles and don't have to stop for fuel, but have to for bathroom breaks, tow at 70 to 75 miles hour and doesn't fad on hills , we have the 7.3L diesel which is as good as the 5.9L Cummings diesel , its like traveling on your sofa in front of the air conditioning

I bought a new 2001 Excursion diesel in November of 2000. I still drive it. It pulls heavy trailers, holds 8 people, rides comfortably, and has been incredibly reliable. I did replace the transmission at about 100,000 miles. Again, I pulled very heavy trailers.

What are the "must have" mods for our Excursions?

Any thoughts? Engine? Intake + Exhaust?? Suspension? 2 to 6 inch lifts? Body? Stereo?  

Better shock absorbers, Hellwig rear anti-swaybar (the OEM unit is junk in comparison), and something to eliminate axle-wrap in the rear. Lifts are a personal decision/choice. Power upgrades? Only if you have the 5.4L gas V8 ... the V10 & PSD are ample as is.

I've been under many Excursions to install the Hellwigs, and all you have to do is look and see where the OEM bar attaches to the axle housing ... which is not far enough outboard. I worded my first response so that it applied regardless if an OEM bar was already in place. If no bar is present, by all means, get one. If you have the OEM bar, it's time for an upgrade. BTW, I get no $$$ from Hellwig.

As far as suspension, if you dont like lifts then at least get a set of V or X code springs and a decent set of shocks. When I put on my v-codes, it was unbelieveable how much better it rode; and I was still on crappy OEM shocks. Not bottoming out every 5 min does wonders for your kidneys. I have Pro Comp ES3000 shocks, and even though most people on here hate them, they're STILL way better than OEMs; I dont have a problem with them at all (cheap, too). Lots of people like Bilsteins; but I didn't want to sink the cash in until I decide whether or not to lift. I also think that a set 285s is a great upgrade; looks WAY better than the factory tires.  

I have a 2000 Excursion 4x4. So far I've put on X code front springs and F350 rear blocks, Edlebrock shocks, Firestone air bags on the rear, Helweg sway bars front and rear, and Toyo M55 285-75R16 tires. I'm having a Detroit Locker installed in the rear differential next week. I also run a Super Chips Micro Tuner. I intend to add a large front bumper and 16K winch when the piggy bank allows. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/biggrin.gif  

Helwig made a huge difference. No more wallowing around!  

I would say my best mod's were in order. 1. Shocks & sway bar. No more bouncing down the highway after a little bump. The sway bar is a absolute must if you like to enjoy driving, no more leaning and grabing for a door handle when cornering. 2. Chip or Tuner. It is nice to have the power when needed. You will be amazed at the gains from a tuner/chip. (of course this comes with gauges/exhaust/intake, I don't have those yet). 3. Chrome,tires & rims, lift, traction bars, etc. Now you can personalize the X. Brett DZL_X_4x4  

Is this a must have or a wish list? /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/warmsmile.gif If I were buying an X.. The "must have" are: Depending on the year, install a rear Hellwig anti-sway bar. Husky Floor & Cargo Liners. Remove the OEM roof rack cross bars, your roof will thank you!! The "wish list": Gauges!!! (should probably be on the "must have" list if towing) Intake: AIS or aFe. Exhaust: I like Banks. Suspension / Body: front "u" or "v" codes upgrade the shocks and steering stabilizer. upgrade tires to at least 285/75/16's. Can't help you with lift info, it looks killer but not practical for us. Stereo: Alpine here. Lot's of stuff out there!! If you have kids, an audio/video set up is my recommendation. Mom like it too. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif Others: PSD badges. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/ooo.gif upgrade front wipers to at least 22". upgrade front 9007 headlight bulbs to something like Sylvania Silverstars. Ok here goes: Guages are must if you tow. Definitely pyro and tranny temp TTM - Turbo Temp Monitor to go with Pyro. Absolutely the best add-on I've done. Springs - good idea if you want to improve the OEM not so good ride. Shocks - dump the factory ones immediately! Throw out the OEM roof rack ASAP. Will only destroy the top! Have fun with your new toy! tginz

What's wrong with the roof rack?? I looked and see nothing wrong with mine.  

The crossbars sit right down on & make contact with the paint. Will rub the paint off and induce corrosion ... regardless of that wimpy little hard rubber strip on the bottom of the crossbars. I sold mine on eBay.

[/ QUOTE ] The stock rear spring set on our X rested in just under 20,000 miles and made the X level with the front V codes and when I hooked the trailer up the nose was a tad up so the rear F350 blocks was a quick bandaid till I either get em re-arched or acquire a set of take-offs from a SD.
