Surveys: Most Americans more likely to stay in hotels in 2023 vs. 2022

Hotel industry outlook for next three months is very good, as most business travelers report return to normal.

2023 Travel Outlook

WASHINGTON (Jan. 10, 2023) – 60% of Americans report being more likely to stay in hotels this year than in 2022, and hotels are the top lodging choice among those planning to travel for business and leisure in the next three months, according to new national Hotel Booking Index survey research commissioned by the American Hotel & Lodging Association (AHLA) and conducted by Morning Consult.

According to the surveys, 52% of adults would choose to stay in hotels if they were to travel overnight for leisure in the next three months, while 76% of potential business travelers would be most likely to stay in a hotel if they travel for work during the same timeframe.

Survey responses from business travelers indicate that nearly 70% of their employers have either returned to the pre-pandemic normal or increased amounts of business travel. This is good news for hoteliers, as business travel is one of hotels’ main sources of revenue.

Specifically:

  • 51% of business travelers say the share of employees expected or encouraged to travel for work is now the same as before the pandemic, while another 20% say it’s more than before.
  • 53% of business travelers say the average length of business trips is now the same as before the pandemic, while another 20% say it’s more than before.
  • 52% of business travelers say the amount of business trips expected or supported by their employer is now the same as before the pandemic, while another 20% say it’s more than before.
  • 52% of business travelers say the amount of spending their employer will cover on business trips is now the same as before the pandemic, while another 18% say it’s more than before.

Based on the survey results, AHLA’s Hotel Booking Index (HBI) for the next three months is 7.1, or very good. The HBI is a composite score gauging the short-term outlook for the hotel industry. The ten-point score is based on a weighted average of survey respondents’ travel likelihood in the next three months (50%), self-reported household financial security (30%), and a preference to stay in hotels for travel (20%).

The two Hotel Booking Index surveys of more than 4,000 adults were conducted Dec. 16 – 19, 2022, and Dec. 28, 2022, to Jan. 2, 2023. Other key findings include the following:

  • Hotels are the top lodging choice for those planning to travel overnight for the upcoming holidays Martin Luther King Jr. Day (47%), Valentine’s Day (54%), and President’s Day (42%)
  • 48% of business travelers have extended a business trip in the last year for leisure purposes, and 84% of business travelers are interested in bleisure
  • 60% of adults are likely to take more vacation/leisure trips in 2023 vs. 2022
  • 45% of business travelers are likely to take more business trips in 2023 vs. 2022

“With Americans planning for more hotel stays this year and business travel moving in the right direction, AHLA’s Hotel Booking Index is a cause for optimism among hoteliers,” said AHLA President & CEO Chip Rogers . “This positive momentum is great news for the hotel industry as well as its employees, who are enjoying more career opportunities, upward mobility and flexibility than ever before.”

To help hotels fill open jobs and raise awareness of the hotel industry’s 200+ career pathways, the AHLA Foundation’s “A Place to Stay” multi-channel advertising campaign is now active in 14 cities, including Atlanta, Baltimore, Chicago, Dallas, Denver, Houston, Los Angeles, Miami, Nashville, New York, Orlando, Phoenix, San Diego, and Tampa. For more info on the campaign, visit thehotelindustry.com . Additionally, AHLA affiliate “Hospitality is Working” recently launched the Workforce & Immigration Initiative. The effort is aimed at urging Congress to address workforce shortages with bipartisan solutions to incorporate more immigrants into the American economy. You can learn more about the effort here .

Morning Consult Survey Methodology Morning Consult conducted two surveys on behalf of AHLA. The first was conducted December 16 – 19, 2022, among 4,005 U.S. adults and the second was conducted December 28, 2022, to January 2, 2023, among 4,021 U.S. adults. The interviews were conducted online and the data were weighted to approximate a target sample of adults based on gender, age, race, educational attainment, and region. Topline results from each survey have a margin of error of plus or minus 2 percentage points.

The Points Guy on the Credit Card Competition Act: ‘It’s ridiculous’

  • OCC releases mortgage performance report for fourth quarter 2023

ABA Banking Journal

“It is anti-consumer,” said Brian Kelly, also known as “the Points Guy,” addressing the so-called Credit Card Competition Act—a proposed bill sponsored by Sens. Roger Marshall (R-Kan.) and Dick Durbin (D-Ill.) that would impose network routing requirements on banks that issue credit cards.

Kelly, who turned a one-man credit card reward points blog founded in 2010 into a popular website focused on travel and credit card rewards best practices, has been highly critical of the proposed legislation. He joined American Bankers Association President and CEO Rob Nichols today during the association’s Washington Summit to discuss how consumers would be harmed and how lawmakers may not fully understand the implications of the bill. “No matter how you slice it, this bill will not help consumers,” Kelly said. The new routing mandate would reduce the revenue that banks receive for processing credit card transactions, forcing banks to reduce the popular rewards and benefits that revenue supports.

Many consumers choose credit cards based on the rewards they offer, such as cash back, travel miles or other perks. “Well over half of Americans have some sort of some form of rewards,” Kelly said, explaining that—contrary to the claims of some of the bill’s supporters—points aren’t just for the rich. “Wages have not kept up for many people and they use cash-back and other rewards to get by. They get gift cards for family events or to use for travel. I just don’t understand taking away that value for consumers and then depending on the trickle-down economics of retailers passing on savings to customers—it’s just ridiculous.”

According to a recent ABA survey conducted by Morning Consult, 80% of consumers have at least one credit card that offers rewards, and 88% say they value the rewards program on their credit cards. By a more than 2-to-1 margin, consumers say they would be disappointed to lose the rewards program on their credit cards due to government regulatory changes. “The more we educate people on the [rewards]system and how it’s beneficial to consumers, I think lawmakers will think twice once they realize the real ramifications of this,” Kelly said.

The data: Nearly two-thirds (63.4%) of US adults have used an app for a health-related purpose in the last 12 months, according to a recent survey from Insider Intelligence.

Comparing two surveys on mobile health app usage: Insider Intelligence’s December 2022 survey of 1,470 US adults and Morning Consult’s January 2023 questionnaire of 2,201 adults revealed similar findings about health apps .

  • Health apps for exercise or fitness ranked as the most common type downloaded by consumers in both surveys.
  • Apps for general wellness, which includes nutrition, weight loss, and sleep , were the next most popular in each survey.
  • Only 1 in 5 respondents in our survey and 1 in 4 in Morning Consult’s research said they’re using mental health apps .
  • Nearly 6 in 10 consumers who use fitness and general wellness apps are doing so daily, per our data. And Morning Consult’s findings showed that half of health app users are on the application either once a day (23%) or multiple times per day (27%) .
  • Morning Consult’s data signaled a 6% increase in health app users since late 2018.

We see three drivers explaining the recent growth:

  • Consumers have more options than ever to choose from. Health app developers rushed to market with new launches in the early days of the pandemic. More than 90,000 health apps —250 per day—were released in 2020 on top app stores worldwide, per 2021 data from IQVIA.
  • Interest in health apps spiked as in-person physician visits were postponed. 32% of health app users increased usage during the pandemic, while just 13% used them less often, per Morning Consult.
  • Consumers are seeing results . Fitness and exercise apps ranked highest among consumers (27% ) when asked which digital tools have the greatest impact on their physical health, according to 2022 Kantar data shared with Insider Intelligence.

Our take: Consumers are mostly turning to free or low-cost health apps to meet specific goals related to fitness, diet, and weight loss. Mental health apps are also popular, but among a smaller patient pool. With so many options readily available, developers and marketers will need to show consumers how their health app delivers unique value.
