Mickelson on the look out for new caddie
Ballymena’s Dermot McElroy fired a brilliant final round 64 to set a clubhouse target not for catching and claim top prize at the EuroPro Tour’s Cubefunder Championship.
The 28-year old went into the final round trailing by four strokes but soared to the front with nine birdies in his eight-under par 64, moving through to 14-under to set a mean target.

In the end it proved enough to win by two for the Northern Irishman who goes one place better than his runner-up finish at the Worcestershire Masters in July.
“I’m obviously delighted,” said McElroy. “I had a number in my head at the start of the day – I thought if I could get to 15-under, nine-under on the day, I thought that would have a great chance.
“I got off to a great start – four birdies in a row – and I thought ‘right, I’m back in the tournament’. I just continued to play well after that, six-under after nine and I knew I was there, thereabouts. Didn’t look at leaderboards, just kept playing the game and only looked at the leaderboard when I was coming down the last hole – I seen I was tied for the lead.
“But yeah, I’m absolutely delighted just to play so well. It was a windy day so it was a good score.”
It’s a continuation of a remarkably consistent campaign for McElroy who’s made seven cuts from eight starts on the Tour while he also impressed on the Challenge Tour this term, winning this year’s Christy O’Connor Jnr award at the Irish Challenge before enjoying a top-20 finish at the European Tour’s World Invitational at Galgorm Castle.
Still, when he came in off the course on Friday, McElroy remained tied for the lead, one shy of the target he set himself at the start of the day. After a good chance went a-begging at the last, did he think he’d done enough to take the win in regulation play?
“Not really no,” he admitted. “I missed a six or so footer at the last hole and I thought that was the putt to win or even give me a chance at a playoff but the 13th hole, the 15th and 16th were playing very, very difficult. It was so firm out there and with the wind direction. I guess you never know but those holes were playing extremely tricky.”
And so it proved – McElroy’s 54-hole tally in the end good enough to win by two. Starting the week in 22nd on the Order of Merit where the top-5 earn Challenge Tour cards for next season, McElroy moves up to 4th spot with the win boasting a season’s earnings so far of £18,180 as he looks to progress onto Europe’s secondary tour for next season.
“It’s brilliant,” McElroy added. “I knew a win today would get me into the top-5. My main goal this year is to finish in the top-5 and get onto the Challenge Tour but you just have to win on this Tour [to make that happen].
“You could literally finish top-10 every week and not get top-5. It’s so concentrated with the money that you just have to win so it’s great to get it.”
McElroy will look to kick on now next week when the EuroPro Tour moves on to Clandeboye Golf Club, a course he knows well. Meanwhile, Wentworth’s Eoin Leonard completed the Irish scoring, signing off with a 72 for a top-10 finish at nine-under par.

PGA EuroPro Tour To Fold After More Than 20 Years
Europe's third-tier development Tour will end at the conclusion of the 2022 season
- Sign up to Golf Monthly Newsletter Newsletter
The PGA EuroPro Tour has announced that the 2022 season will be its last, citing the economic landscape of rising costs and changes in audience appetite for its decision.
It was created in 2002 following a merger between the EuroPro Tour and PGA MasterCard Tour, as the Professional Golfers' Association and Barry Hearn's Matchroom Sport joined forces.
As Europe's third-tier golf tour, the PGA EuroPro Tour held an important place in the ecosystem. The top five finishers on the Order of Merit graduated to the Challenge Tour and secured a place at Stage Two of the DP World Tour Qualifying School.
The success of the Tour is perhaps merited by its alumni, which includes Major winners in Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel and European Ryder Cup players in the likes of Tommy Fleetwood , Tyrrell Hatton , Ross Fisher, Jamie Donaldson, Nicholas Colsaerts and Oliver Wilson .
Although unknown at this stage, it is likely PGA EuroPro Tour members will take up opportunities on other development circuits upon conclusion of the 2022 season, such as the Clutch Pro Tour, Alps Tour, Pro Golf Tour and Nordic Golf League.
Speaking of the decision, PGA EuroPro Tour President Barry Hearn said: "I have been honoured to have created the PGA EuroPro Tour alongside Sandy Jones of the PGA and to watch the development of so many aspiring and inspiring professional golfers.
"Sadly, in these changing times for professional golf support for Europe's biggest development tour has not been sufficient to justify its continuation but I must stress my eternal gratitude to Dan Godding and his team at the PGA EuroPro Tour, the PGA, our broadcasters Sky Sports and the golf clubs and volunteers in both the UK and Europe without whom we would never have created so many opportunities for next generation of professional golfers."

The season closing Tour Championship will serve as the final PGA EuroPro Tour event and will take place at Lough Erne Resort 19-21 October 2022. James Allan, Michael Stewart, Dermot McElroy, Josh Hilleard and Ryan Brooks currently occupy the top-5 positions in the Order of Merit.
James joined Golf Monthly having previously written for other digital outlets. He is obsessed with all areas of the game – from tournament golf, to history, equipment, technique and travel. He is also an avid collector of memorabilia; with items from the likes of Bobby Jones, Tiger Woods, Francis Ouimet, Arnold Palmer, Lee Trevino, Adam Scott and Ernie Els. As well as writing for Golf Monthly, James’ golfing highlight is fist bumping Phil Mickelson on his way to winning the Open Championship at Muirfield in 2013. Heartbreak for golfers as PGA EuroPro Tour to end after 20 years
Pga europro tour has decided to call 2022 its final season. .
PGA EuroPro Tour has confirmed the sad news that 2022 will be its last ever season having hosted tournaments for the stars of tomorrow for 20 years.
The circuit first began in 2002 as a partnership between Sandy Jones and the PGA's Mastercard Tour and Barry Hearn and Matchroom Sport's EuroPro Golf Tour.
Since then, some of the game's brightest talents have come through the EuroPro Tour ranks such as major champions and now LIV Golf players Louis Oosthuizen and Charl Schwartzel, six-time DP World Tour winner Tyrrell Hatton and rising stars Richard Mansell, Marcus Armitage and Aaron Rai.
According to PGA EuroPro Tour CEO Daniel Godding, "the economic landscape of increasing costs and the changing habits of the worldwide audience means it has become clear that unfortunately there is no longer the support nor demand in the market to operate the PGA EuroPro Tour."
This season's final event will be the Matchroom Sport Tour Championship at Lough Erne Resort between 19th and 21st October, where the top five at the end of the event will be promoted to the Challenge Tour for 2023.
The 2022 season will be the final year for The PGA EuroPro Tour. After more than 20 years of offering opportunity and shaping the next generation of professional golfer, our journey sadly ends. From the bottom of our hearts, thanks to everyone! https://t.co/HpUiDeJw8L — PGA EuroPro Tour (@PGAEuroProTour) September 28, 2022
After what has been a phenomenal 20 years of developing many of Europe’s best professional golfers, the PGA EuroPro Tour has decided to make 2022 the final season.
In a market evolving quickly the PGA EuroPro Tour feels the impact of changing global investment, media and sponsorship. The economic landscape of increasing costs and the changing habits of the worldwide audience means it has become clear that unfortunately there is no longer the support nor demand in the market to operate the PGA EuroPro Tour.
The Tour first opened its doors in 2002 as a partnership between Sandy Jones and the PGA’s Mastercard Tour and Barry Hearn and Matchroom Sport’s EuroPro Golf Tour. The success was immediately realised with members Louis Oosthuizen, Charl Schwartzel and John E Morgan with more recently the likes of Aaron Rai, Tyrrell Hatton, Marcus Armitage and Richard Mansell using the developmental design and progression pathway to springboard their careers on to the European and PGA circuits.
The purpose of the PGA EuroPro was to develop the very best talent in the sport and prepare them for the next stage in their careers. As a direct affiliate to the European Tour, the PGA EuroPro offered five Challenge Tour cards for the following season and has proudly promoted over 100 golfers to the next level.
The PGA EuroPro Tour has provided a world class service to its members offering a stepping stone and media experience like no other tour. But in recent times, the sports environment has evolved drastically, and it has proven difficult for the PGA EuroPro Tour to operate. We are sad to bring an era to its end, but we are delighted that we have helped so many realise their dreams.
We wish everyone the best of success in the years to come and we’re excited to see where our past and current members can take their games. We’d like to use this opportunity to thank all our staff and PGA Members, all our partners from the 20 years who have made it possible and every golf club and volunteer who has been so hospitable when the PGA EuroPro Tour has come to town.
Matchroom Sport and PGA EuroPro Tour President Barry Hearn added –
“I have been honoured to have created the PGA EuroPro Tour alongside Sandy Jones of the PGA and to watch the development of so many aspiring and inspiring professional golfers.
Robert Maxfield, Chief Executive of the PGA added: –
“I would like to thank and congratulate Matchroom for successfully operating The PGA EuroPro Tour for so many years. A number of today’s global golf stars owe a huge debt of gratitude to The PGA EuroPro Tour for providing them with the opportunity to realise their dreams. It is sad that this will be the last season of The PGA EuroPro Tour but we can all look back with great pride on what has been achieved over the last 20 years.”
Our Final event will be the Matchroom Sport Tour Championship at Lough Erne Resort between 19th and 21st October, where the top 5 at the end of the event will be promoted to the Challenge Tour for 2023.
