THIS IS WHAT AWAITS IN EUROPE
Towering castles. Untamed natural beauty. Captivating history. Can’t-miss cuisine. This is your time, your moment, your chance to discover Europe.
Destination Must-Sees
The capital and largest city of Andalusian Spain is Seville. Approximately 2,200 years old, the early origins of the city date back to the year 712. It is situated along the Guadalquivir River, which splits the city into two halves. Seville is famous for being the birthplace of the Flamenco dance. It is also known for its culture, monuments, traditions and artistic heritage.
The Costa del Sol:
This “Sunny Coast” is the southernmost part of Spain, stretching along the Mediterranean Sea. Its major province is Málaga, the home of Picasso. To the far west part of the Costa del Sol is the Strait of Gibraltar, which separates the Mediterranean from the Atlantic. The sunny provinces of the Costa del Sol are known for their golden sandy beaches, fresh Mediterranean seafood and relaxing atmosphere.
Irish countryside:
Take in the atmosphere of quaint seaside villages, see awe inspiring views of the Lakes of Killarney and explore the picturesque town of Kinsale. Wherever you travel in the countryside, you’ll find that the rolling hills and friendly people you encounter will become a part of your fabric.
Ancient cities of Italy:
Italy is positively brimming with the world’s most famous Roman ruins like the Colosseum, Pompeii and many other relics from the ancient past. In fact, many cities in Italy still hold evidence of what once was. You can find an aqueduct, city gate, Roman theater or the ruins of an entire city there.
Destination Must-Dos
La Sagrada Familia:
Meaning the Holy Family, this modern structure is known as the church of the people, built by the people, with the money of the people. While it is not the cathedral of Barcelona, it is widely known due to its unique architecture and phenomenal design initiated by architect Antoni Gaudí. Work on the exploratory church began in 1882 and continues to this day, but with modern technology and the rising number of visitors and donations, the church’s completion date has rapidly become closer. The facades of the church are breathtaking in their intricate and artistic details, all of which were inspired by Gaudí.
The Palace of Versailles
The iconic Palace of Versailles (UNESCO) and its gardens reflect the extravagant tastes of King Louis XIV, the "Sun King." Alongside a local guide, learn the history and admire the various rooms of the State Apartments, including the Queen's bedchamber and the famous Hall of Mirrors. Be sure to explore the incredible gardens, some of the most famous in the world, which took over 40 years to complete and include intricate architecture, elaborate fountains, and gorgeous statues.
Drift down a canal:
While canals are found across Europe, nothing beats a romantic gondola ride in Venice. Locals like to say the best way to explore the city is to ‘get lost.’ So take a ride along these waterways, step off and then wind your way through the intricate blend of bridges, narrow streets and grand squares.
This was the first capital of Spain located about 43 miles south of Madrid. The history of Toledo dates back to the Roman occupation circa 192 B.C. The old city of Toledo sits atop of a small mountain surrounded on three sides by the Tagus River, and medieval walls on the fourth. From the top of the mountain you can get a 180 degree view of the surrounding landscape.

At the heart of Europe, monumental contemporary and historic events shape today’s Germany. From the fall of the Berlin Wall to the rise of the Beatles in Hamburg, the culture of the country is marked by its influential past and present. Imagine yourself exploring postcard-worthy castles such as Neuschwanstein or wandering through medieval cities such as Regensburg. From the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge to the plains of the north, the range of Germany’s landscapes will capture your heart. Perhaps you’ll also indulge your taste buds as you sample the delicious Marzipan sweet treats of the Hanseatic port of Lubeck, which have been produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, know that a stein of German beer or a glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are both a worthy compliment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveler anticipates.
Switzerland
Incredible skiing on the Swiss Alps and delectable Swiss chocolate are only two reasons for visiting Switzerland. Located between Austria, France, Germany and Italy, you can get quite a diverse European cultural experience depending on which region of Switzerland you choose. And though the food, music, art and people themselves are very much influenced by their European neighbors, they are all still uniquely Swiss. You will leave with plenty of memories to savor for a lifetime.

Thankfully, that’s a tough question to answer, as so many European countries offer delicious food. Ultimately, it’s a matter of personal preference, so you’re sure to find something you love no matter which country you visit. One strong contender for the top spot, however, is Italy.
Best known for its pasta, pizza, cheeses, and gelato, Italy is a foodie’s delight. That’s because the purest expression of Italian cooking relies on farm-fresh ingredients, and the cuisine changes from region to region. Fresh, delicious, and unlike anything you’ve tried outside the country, Italian food never disappoints the palate.

Another foodie's favorite destination in Europe is France. From its boeuf bourguignon to its pain au chocolat, France is known for its world-class culinary scene and timeless favorite dishes. While you’re guaranteed to taste delicious dishes no matter where you travel to France , the type of French food you’ll find depends on the region and season. The north of France features heavier dishes; the south features fresh fish, lean meat, and grilled vegetables.

We recommend packing light for your trip to Europe. One suitcase and one carry-on per person is a good guideline to follow; you should feel comfortable managing your baggage at the airport. After you’ve reserved one of our Europe tour packages, we’ll give you information about how to prepare for your particular trip and even share a packing list in our mobile app.
- Sun protection. For all our trips, especially during the summer months in Europe, we recommend bringing sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat to protect your face and the back of your neck from the sun.
- Layers. For tours of Europe, we recommend packing lightweight, loose-fitting clothing that can be easily layered to accommodate varying temperatures, as well as a light jacket or rainwear.
- Comfortable walking shoes. Because you’ll be exploring new destinations with local guides while on your trip, a comfortable pair of walking shoes is essential. Whether hitting the landmarks of London or on a walking tour of Amsterdam, you’ll be glad you brought your most comfortable footwear.
- Dressier attire. You may want to pack dressier attire if you plan to visit a high-end restaurant or attend a special performance on any of our Europe trips.
- Full-coverage layers for religious sites. In Europe, it is preferable not to visit churches, temples, or other religious sites with bare legs or shoulders, and entrance may be denied on this basis.
- Other must-bring items. A camera to take photos during your journey, and a notebook for jotting down notes or recommendations your Tour Director shares.

Europe - Tour Package Highlights and Trip Insights
With so much to see, do, eat and buy, planning a Europe tour is no easy feat. There are, of course, the typical sightseeing musts: Paris’ Louvre, London’s Tower Bridge, and Rome’s Colosseum. Even Europe’s most frequent visitors will always find something new to discover. Read on for our top Europe tour highlights and Europe trip insights.
Europe Tour Package Highlights

- Ride a bicycle through the townhouse-lined streets of Amsterdam before touring the canals by boat
- Listen to the romantic songs of the gondoliers as you cruise through the canals of Venice

- Hike from village to village in Italy’s Cinque Terre
- Get lost between the shelves of some of the world’s most beautiful libraries, like those at Trinity College (Dublin, Ireland), Mafra Palace (Mafra, Portugal), and the Clementinum Baroque Library Hall (Prague, Czech Republic)
- Join a Europe tour that goes through many of Europe's travel highlights in countries such as Spain , France , Italy , Netherlands and Scandinavia .
Europe Trip Insights
- Traveling by rail is one of the easiest (and sometimes cheapest) ways to get around Europe, especially if you plan to travel for a couple of weeks (or longer). Investigate rail passes before you visit, particularly ones that can be used between countries. Interrail and Eurail are very popular among travelers.
- Don’t skip the “touristy” destinations. Everyone travels differently, but the most popular European highlights are popular for a reason. Brave the crowds and be sure to stop by those more cliché sites - you’ll be glad you did.
- Try not to over prepare! One of the great benefits of visiting Europe is that it’s incredibly easy to travel between towns and countries. Allow yourself some flexibility to open yourself up to new adventures (and avoid travel burnout). If you've booked a Europe tour package with accommodation, activities, guides etc. get ready to indulge and relax - you are up for a Europe trip of a lifetime.
- Chances are you don’t speak 23 different languages, so be prepared before you travel. Avoid carrying around heavy guide books by downloading a translation app on your phone.
- Note that not all European countries use the Euro, including the United Kingdom , Denmark and Hungary (among others). Do your research beforehand and be ready to juggle different currencies if you’re planning an extensive trip.
- Travelling on a budget? Check our last minute holiday and travel deals to Europe . Also, consider looking for accommodation outside the city centre. Most large European cities are very well connected by public transportation, meaning all your bucket list sites are just a quick (and often inexpensive) bus, train, or metro ride away.
Tours in Europe - Questions and Answers
You can spend a couple of months exploring Europe and still feel like you have not seen everything. Generally speaking, a two-week Europe trip should be just enough if you are looking to cover its major highlights. However, if you want a comprehensive travel experience within this duration, it is better that you focus on a region or a few countries rather than traveling all over the continent.
Choose a single country or schedule your trip around a handful of cities in different countries. While larger European cities may require three to four days to explore, you can get around smaller destinations in a day or two. Planning your trip around a particular region will cut down your travel time and save your time in transit.
If you are planning to visit multiple countries, you should prepare a tentative list of destinations you are interested in. If it is your first trip, stick to major cities and cultural centers for the sake of simplicity and convenience. Also, be flexible and optimize your travel time and budget. Be open to changing your itinerary depending on schedules and ticket prices.
There are dozens of insurance companies offering travel insurance, which can make it difficult for you to choose the right one.
There are a number of things that you should be aware of while purchasing travel insurance. If it is comprehensive medical insurance plans that you are interested in, make sure to find out what all the plan covers. If you are concerned about certain scenarios, then check out customizable travel insurance policies and find out if the provider can cover you for those situations. You also need to determine if there are reasonable coverage limits. Check deductibles and compensation limits in the insurance policy for this.
While insurance is important, it is mostly a safeguard against emergencies. If you are on a budget, you can go with the second- or even third-best option and prioritize getting your money’s worth instead of purchasing the most comprehensive coverage.
Europe has swathes of spectacular landscapes, a rich history, and vibrant cultures. Therefore, deciding on the best travel destinations on the continent can be difficult. However, you can narrow down on highlights by choosing one overarching theme for your trip.
If you are looking forward to immersing yourself in art and history, then Italy, Spain , and France should be on the top of your list. Head for Switzerland , Norway , or Croatia if nature is what you love the most. For beaches and water sports, you will be hard-pressed to find better destinations than Greece , Portugal , and Montenegro.
Having said that, you can also diversify your itinerary by mixing and matching different elements of the same country. Italy tops the charts not just for its medieval monuments and Renaissance art but also for coastal scenery and sun-soaked beaches. Similarly, Spain is a foodie paradise as much as it is an architectural hotspot.
Bus services like FlixBus and BusAbout offer a convenient means of transport if you wish to move from one city to another within the same country. Although these services do travel between countries, they might not be the best choice due to a longer travel time.
Budget airlines are another great way to get around Europe’s major cities, especially when you want to cut down on travel time between two countries. Keep an eye out and you might be able to snag tickets at unbelievable rates. Services like Skyscanner can be of help. Some of the largest budget airlines in the continent are Ryanair , WizzAir , Eurowings , and EasyJet .
Ridesharing services are a godsend for those wishing to immerse themselves in local culture as they offer you the chance to catch a ride with locals along the way. BlaBlaCar is the largest one. The only downside is that it is not always as easy to book a rideshare service as it is to catch a bus or hop on a budget flight.
The USA is one of the 63 countries whose citizens enjoy visa-free entry into the EU Schengen zone along with the UK and associated states like Iceland , Liechtenstein, Norway, and Switzerland.
This means that if you are an American citizen with a valid US passport and want to travel to Europe for a limited amount of time for tourism or business purpose, you can do so anytime you want to. However, if you have more long-term plans (say, you intend to get employed, study, or simply live in Europe for an extended period of time), you will need to apply for a visa. The type of your visa and required documentation depend on your goals.
Update for 2022: EU is set to launch ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorization System) by the end of this year. It is similar to ESTA and is supposed to help simplify travel procedures and decrease security risks. All travelers allowed to travel to the EU and associated states visa-free will require an ETIAS authorization. This also includes US citizens.
If your country has a visa-free agreement with the EU, you are allowed to spend up to 90 days within a period of 180 days. Keep in mind that the countdown starts on the date of your entry and ends on the date of your exit. So, for example, if you fly into an EU country on the first of the month and exit on the 15th, it will count as a 15-day stay.
There are 63 countries in the world that have a visa-waiver agreement with the EU . If your country is part of this agreement, you can travel to Europe visa-free. You do, however, need to show the following to be allowed into the Schengen Zone and associated states.
- A valid passport: Your passport should have a validity of at least 3 months at the time of your entry into Schengen and be less than ten years old.
- Purpose of entry: In addition to your passport, you also require documents that prove that you are there for tourism purposes. These documents can include invoices for hotel reservations and booked tours.
- Proof of financial means: You also need to carry documents proving that you can support yourself during your stay in the region.
As long as you have got all three, all you need is a plane ticket to your chosen destination.

Destination must-see's.
Get to know the city that was once considered the capital of the world! A panoramic tour by a local expert leads you to all the most iconic spots in London. See Trafalgar Square, St. Paul’s Cathedral, the Tower of London, Buckingham Palace, Westminster Abbey, Big Ben and many more places you’ve only read about.
Louvre Museum:
The Louvre Museum holds some of the most priceless treasures in the world. Enjoy touring with a local expert who will take you through an array of works ranging from ancient times to the mid-19th century. Don’t keep the ladies waiting! DaVinci’s famous Mona Lisa and the renowned Venus de Milo await your visit!
Destination Must-Do's
Explore Chateau de Chillon:
Europe has a wide variety of castles to choose from. The exquisite Chateau de Chillon in Switzerland presides over Lake Geneva. Beginning life as a Roman outpost, today it is the nation’s most visited historic site.
Drink Bordeaux wine:
Just about anywhere you travel in Europe, you’re bound to come across some fantastic wine, especially in Bordeaux in France. Resting on the Garonne River, this charming area is one of the largest wine growing regions on the continent.
Culinary Surprises:
The best way to experience a culture is to eat like the locals. The straightforward food of Great Britain always seems to delight travelers. While Italian food still reigns, you just might have the best meal of your life enjoying a steak and kidney pie or bangers and mash.

A rendezvous with a magnifique experience awaits! As cliché as it sounds, France truly has something for everyone. With over two dozen cities, each with their own nuances of the French culture and contributions to its history, architecture, art and last but not least, the gastronomical delights that the French are famous for throughout the world are yours to explore, experience and fall in love with during your stay. Coast to coast, border to border, there are seemingly endless variations on your French experience to be had. At the heart of Europe, fascinating events of contemporary and more historic times shape today’s Germany - from the fall of the Berlin Wall, to the rise of the Beatles in 1960s Hamburg plus wartime history, picture postcard castles such as Neuschwanstein and medieval cities such as Regensburg. Landscapes range from the Bavarian Alps to the Rhine Gorge and plains of the north. The Hanseatic port of Lubeck provides delicious Marzipan sweet treats, produced there for over 200 years. Whether on a journey on the ‘Romantic Road’ or cruising along the Rhine, a stein of German beer or glass of wine from the Rhine vineyards are a worthy accompaniment to a destination that offers far more than the average traveller anticipates.

Europe Escorted Tours & Guided Holidays
Escorted tours & guided holidays to europe.
Scenic beauty, a fascinating artistic heritage and an epic history, all of this and more makes Europe a dream destination for curious travellers wanting a Europe guided tour. Lovely landscapes offer a diverse feast for the eyes, whether you head south to Spain and Italy , or east to Croatia and Romania or explore some of it's most beautiful islands such as Sicily, Sardinia or Malta . Alternatively, stay closer to home as you explore the French Riviera .
There are so many options and variety on our European tours. Discover the rich historical sites of Turkey - such as the legendary city of Troy or head to warmer climes to find beaches in all shapes and sizes, from dramatic and rugged to golden and idyllic. Then there’s Italy’s Tuscan hills , which are dotted with Cypress trees, while pastel-shaded houses cling precariously to the glorious coastline of Amalfi . And if you want to reach really dizzy heights, a holiday to the Swiss Alps offers jaw-dropping views in every direction. There’s a long list of man-made wonders to consider when choosing your European tour, too. Italy is crammed with treasures from top to toe, with Rome’s Colosseum, the Leaning Tower of Pisa and Florence’s Duomo for starters. The romance of France , and the magnificent Spain’s Alhambra Palace will leave you utterly spellbound. And you’ll wonder how on earth Greece’s Meteora Monasteries were built on towering rocks in the 11th century. The chance to step back in time is never too far away wherever your travels take you, with well-preserved historic treasures around every corner. Delve into the seemingly endless alleyways in Malta , where the Knights of St John would have roamed in the 14th century. Or stroll through Italy’s myriad medieval villages, which stand to this day untouched by time. Ponder life back in 79AD when the well-to-do city of Pompeii was smothered in hot ash by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius. And you can walk in gladiators’ footsteps in Roman amphitheatres scattered right across the land. Sightseeing aside, a wonderful way to experience your chosen European holiday hot spot is through its cuisine. A cheese fondue, Kalamata olives, nutty olive oil, sun-ripened tomatoes, fish freshly plucked from the sea, earthy truffles – each country, and each region boasts its own specialities. And nothing quite beats breaking bread with the locals, or drinking a glass of wine in the very vineyard where the grapes were grown.

There is so much to see and enjoy across Europe from Germany’s architecture, to Frances artistic attractions and an array of historical sites in Italy.
Key attractions not to be missed on your tours are:
Italy – The Colosseum, built in AD 70-80 using travertine, limestone and volcanic rock, seating over 80,000 spectators, it was most famously known for its gladiator fights but it was also the arena for re-enactments of famous battles and executions. More remarkably, it was also the set for simulated sea battles! The arena would be filled with water so vessels could float in during the shows and drained rapidly afterwards. Equally as interesting is the engineering behind this theatre. It had a retractable awning to protect its spectators from the bad weather! Also hidden beneath the colosseum was a warren of tunnels and cells which held the gladiators and animals captive before they were sent to fight.
Another site not to miss in Italy is Pompeii – a 440,000 square meter town that was tragically engulfed by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in A.D. 79. Approximately 10 percent of the population died and the city was buried under lava and volcanic ash. The lava preserved the town which means you can walk the streets and see the well-preserved buildings such as the Lupanare (brothel), and thermopolium (the Roman equivalent of fast food).
France - The famous Eiffel Tower, at the centre of Champ de Mars in Paris, built to be the entrance to the World's Fair in1889.This world famous structure has not always been admired though, in fact Engineer Gustave Eiffel was greatly criticised by locals, calling it a monstrosity! Never did he or they imagine quite how successful and important a structure it would be today, with its 81 floors of exhibits, viewing decks, cafes and gift shops.
Venice – The floating city. A romantic location with over 118 islands connected by the canals that run through Venice. Grab a gondola and sit back, relax and take in the scenery.
Romania – Dracula’s Castle - Bram Stoker’s 1897 Gothic, horror novel Dracula may be imaginary, but the castle isn’t. It was the real life setting of the sinister novel and is located just outside of Brasov in Romania. Officially known as Bran Castle it includes all the weapons and armour that is mentioned in Bram’s book. As for the blood-sucker himself, Bram used Vlad the Impaler as his muse. A ruler who was notorious for brutal torture and demise of in excess of 10,000 people during his reign.
Turkey – Turkey has an array of wonders to offer from Mosques to palaces, to hot springs and the famous bazaars
There is so much delicious food to be tasted across Europe and such a variety from one country to another. From delightful seafood in Portugal , Greece and Croatia to perfect pasta dishes in Italy and world-famous desserts in Austria.
While in Romania you can try stuffed cabbage rolls and in Turkey , anyone with a sweet tooth must try the ancient, traditional pastry dessert of baklava.
There really is something for everyone.

Why Europe’s Cooler Weather Countries Could Be Hot This Summer
Five destinations worth considering to get out of the heat.
With airfares increasing and lodging rapidly getting booked, now is the time to book your summer travels to Europe. But where in Europe? After record-breaking heat the past few summers in southern Europe, with one location reaching an astounding 119.8 degrees, many travelers are looking to destinations in northern Europe such as Scandinavia, Scotland and Iceland rather than the figurative and literal “hot spots” of Italy, Spain, and Greece.
“We’ve seen an over 20 percent increase in bookings on European trips above the 50th parallel [of latitude] in 2024,” said Scott Abbott, director of product at Wilderness Travel, in an email to AARP. “Destinations like Norway, Greenland, Scotland, Ireland and the Faroe Islands have been especially popular this year.” Given that Wilderness Travel’s primary clients are above the age of 50, “having confidence that you’ll be comfortable while exploring these places and be able to enjoy your vacation is a very understandable consideration.”

Extreme weather and climate change probably will have a major impact on travel decisions now and into the future. “Forget chasing the sun. Future travelers will instead be seeking shade as destinations which are popular today will be rendered inhospitable by rising temperatures,” according to a Future Laboratory study sponsored by tour operator Intrepid Travel. There is already a “chasing the shade” trend with “a shift away from beach vacations to cooler destinations in summer months, with parts of Scandinavia and the Baltic … predicted to emerge as top options for those looking to avoid the high summer heat,” said Matt Berna, Intrepid Travel’s president of the Americas, in an emailed statement.
Travelers may even want to consider the Arctic Circle as a potential summer destination. “We are seeing substantial interest in northern destinations as a way for travelers to escape the heat and crowds that have become synonymous with Europe in the summer,” said Stefanie Schmudde, senior vice president, global product strategy for luxury tour operator Abercrombie & Kent, in an email to AARP. “Many [travelers] are shifting their focus away from traditional European destinations and heading to cooler places, like Norway and even the Arctic.”
The increased demand toward the north is reaching travel advisers as well. The Virtuoso travel network reports they “are seeing increased demand for cooler weather destinations like Scandinavia, where Virtuoso bookings for this summer have climbed by 77 percent compared to 2023.”
“I have had a few clients shift [destination] due to temps getting unbearable, and I’ve been advising many to do so,” Jessica Parker, founder of the Trip Whisperer Agency, tells AARP. Kaleigh Kirkpatrick, travel adviser and founder of The Shameless Tourist, shares that she has clients “headed to Scandinavia and Scotland, noting that they were averse to the [southern European] temps.”
For those travelers potentially interested in chasing more moderate temperatures to northern Europe this summer and beyond, here are five cool destinations that may be worth exploring.
Akureyri, Iceland
Iceland has become a very popular destination in recent years, but many visitors just visit the easily accessible capital city of Reykjavík and nearby attractions like the famed Blue Lagoon hot springs. Icelandair offers free stopovers in Reykjavík to passengers on its transatlantic flights, an easy way to get a taste of this cool location.
Travelers looking for more of an immersion into Icelandic history, culture, and nature may enjoy a road trip around the country, with Akureyri, a town on the northern coast of the island, as a featured destination. Intrepid Travel said its most booked tour in the summer of 2023 by American travelers was its Icelandic Discovery itinerary along this route.

Akureyri, a scenic town of around 19,000 inhabitants just south of the Arctic Circle, boasts a relaxed atmosphere far from the hustle and bustle of the capital. The walkable city features a history museum highlighting the region’s past and present, nearby hiking and waterfalls, whale-watching tours, and even a botanic garden.
Potential visitors to Iceland should keep their eyes on the latest news regarding volcanic activity. While the recent eruptions to the southwest of Reykjavík do not affect Akureyri to the north, smoke from previous eruptions has impacted airport operations at times.
Bodø, Norway
If you’re looking to head north in Europe this summer, you can’t get too much farther than Bodø, Norway, inside the Arctic Circle. “Regarding cool places to visit in Norway this summer, Bodø is definitely a must,” says Innovation Norway’s PR manager Harald Hansen.
This colorful city of about 50,000 is a European Capital of Culture for 2024, with an extensive series of festivals, events, art exhibitions and concerts to entertain and educate visitors throughout the year. And you’ll have plenty of time each day to enjoy the city in the summer as the midnight sun is in full effect, with sunlight 24 hours a day in Bodø from approximately May 31 through July 12.

Touring Bodø’s museums, design-forward boutiques and restaurants can fill a summer day in town, while outside the city limits boat tours and hiking opportunities abound, including excursions to clamber over Svartisen, one of Europe’s largest glaciers — definitely a cool summer activity.
Faroe Islands
This archipelago of 18 islands located about halfway between Scotland and Iceland boasts cool summer temperatures (with highs in the mid 50s), spectacular scenery of sea cliffs, waterfalls and lush farmlands, unique local cuisine, and its own unique Nordic culture and history. It’s a special destination for those willing to travel off the beaten track.
The Faroe Islands will become more accessible in 2024 with direct flights from New York via national airline Atlantic Airways this September to October. Regular connecting flights on SAS (Scandinavian Airlines) run through Copenhagen throughout the summer.
The Faroe Islands in summer feature multiple music and cultural festivals, great hikes, farm visits, tours of museums and art galleries. And you can saunter by the brightly painted buildings of the capital city of Tórshavn (Thor’s Harbor).
Göteborg, Sweden
“The phenomenon of ‘coolcation’ … is definitely a hot topic here,” says Visit Sweden media representative Victoria Sallmann, referring to the trend of vacationing in cooler destinations. “The diversity of cool water options [in Sweden], whether it’s the extensive coastlines, lakes, or archipelagos, is increasingly appealing to international visitors.”
A good place to experience such a coolcation is in and around the city of Göteborg, on the west coast of Sweden. According to Visit Sweden, American guest visits there increased more than 53 percent from 2022 to 2023, showing the city’s increasing popularity.
Göteborg is a great place to visit in summer not just for the history and culture of this strategic port town dating to the 17th century, but for a trip to the nearby archipelago. These islands are evocative of the U.S. northeast, with hardy fisherfolk still earning a living on trawlers mixing with summer visitors who come to enjoy the cool ocean breezes, fresh fish fries and even a few sandy beaches. On the nearby island of Vrångö, Håkan Karlsten, owner of the Kajkanten boutique hotel, notes a trend change with guests “saying that they choose a Swedish/Nordic vacation instead of a Mediterranean one, both due to climate changes and costs.”
One notable benefit of visiting a northern destination in summer is sharing in the joy of the locals who have been cooped up all winter. Visit Göteborg in summer, and you’ll see the parks, outdoor cafes and patio bars full of smiling people leaning back and slowly rotating their faces to soak in the sweet — and not too hot — summer sunlight.
Orkney Islands, Scotland
Scotland’s famously inclement weather “isn’t a key motivator for visiting,” says public relations representative Jessica Barnes of VisitScotland. But the saying “it’s possible to experience four seasons in one day,” as Barnes notes, may become a selling point to visit the country during these summers of extreme heat.
Visitation is increasing to Scotland with “record demand … added from the U.S. over the last year,” including a 70 percent increase in spending compared with pre-pandemic numbers, Barnes says. And it will be easy to reach Scotland this summer, with flights from six U.S. cities: Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, New York, Orlando and Washington, D.C. JetBlue will be adding to the mix, launching a new Scotland route into Edinburgh from New York starting in May.
For a cool, off-the-beaten-track summer destination in Scotland, head to the country’s “Wild North.” “[We] definitely have seen a strong interest in places like the Orkney Islands,” says Wilderness Travel’s Abbott, regarding the island chain located off Scotland’s northern coast. With the islands’ great hikes and famed neolithic monuments, tours there “have been especially popular” recently, according to Wilderness Travel.

The Best of Eastern Europe
Excellent trip covering many capitals and other cities in Central and Eastern Europe. There is a lot of free time included in the itinerary to explore on your own, so be prepared to make your own daily plans and venture out on your own or with fellow travelers. Almost every city has free (tips only) quality guides. Accommodations are all in centrally-located medium-level hotels. Some are better than others. As is common in Europe, around half of the hotels did not have air conditioning, only fans. Availability and quality of hotels differs by regions, and I found these hotels to be better than in tours run by G Adventures in other regions of the world. They are lower in quality to hotels in US and Canada. Don't expect a Ritz Carleton, and you won't be disappointed. Breakfasts are included, and they were fantastic everywhere - all-you-can-eat, with large assortment and excellent quality. All other meals are on your own, although the guide made arrangements to eat as a group on many nights (which is optional). Food is still relatively inexpensive in former Soviet bloc countries, not so in Berlin and Vienna. Transportation was excellent, and varied from private buses, minivans and taxis to public trains, metro, buses and trams. Be prepared to carry/roll your luggage for close to 1 km (about half a mile). In a few cities, larger buses and minivans are not allowed into historic centers of town, where hotels are located, during the day, so we had to walk. One of most memorable experiences for many travelers on our tour was a visit to Auschwitz concentration camp, which was included in the itinerary.
Rome to Berlin: Piazzas, Prague & the Past
Great diversity of countries and cities but WAY too fast paced. One night in Slovenia and Poland was ridiculous and with travel time some days we spent less than 15 hours in the city. The guide was a but inexperienced so we didn't have a good description of some of the cities. Great way to make friends and see cities! Would recommend going end of August or later as it was still very hot going through the cities!!

Great tour... cesky krumlov the best!, great suggestions by guide, great travellers!
Baltic Experience
Throughly enjoyed this trip.

Enchanted Landscapes
Ok very well thank you
Joyful Treasures
All hotels were very good. The sights we saw were good. The bus had no bathroom. The guides were average. They were often unclear with their instructions, for example they say meet in the lobby at 8am, but no one is there and people are outside getting on the bus. I did like the interesting history one guide gave.
Balkan Kaleidoscope
our tour guide dimitar and local tour guide were excellent, our driver bobby knew the road very well. schedule was well planned. amazing scenery, i have learned amazing culture and history of balkans. I loved the itinerary, it was fast paced, can improve: need to upgrade the bus with a usb charger or at least wifi. hotels were cozy and excellent except the one in skopje, it was far from city center. overall i love this trip very much. Definitely recommend!
Britain and Ireland Delight (Summer, 8 Days)
The experience was excellent, would definitely recommend to my friends and family visiting. The tour director and the driver were so thoughtful and kind throughout the tour.
Essential Britain & Ireland
great support driver and guide, excellent stops, especially edinbriugh... BUT... too much time on the bus. This needs to be better balanced.. either shorter distance or more timer
Premium Turkey in Depth
Our guide Erkan was extremely knowledgeable and included personal experiences and examples of his family life which made the picture of his country more interesting. The entire experience exceeded expectations. And our driver Ahmet is to be acknowledged as wonderful, too.
Tour from Athens to Dubrovnik or Split: 7 Balkan countries in 14 days
We had an excellent experience. Everything was well organized. The tour company was very receptive to any questions. The guide was very knowledgeable. A couple of the hotels were just OK, but in general, they were just up to our standards. I will say that having an electric car was somehow stressful as our guide could not always find a place to recharge the car at night. He had to go back several times and wait for hours. It made his days very long as it had already been our driver and our guide all day.
Highlights of Scandinavia (12 Days)
Overall very good. We saw the places we wanted to. Sitting back and enjoying the scenery was the highlight. Accomodations were reasonable and breakfasts were very good. Friendly fellow travellers with good camaderie.
Rome to London Quest (Summer, 10 Days)
greg was awesome, approachable, able to answer questions and welcoming. Would definitely recommend Greg!

Very qualified staff and guide! Best days in the Balkans!
Best of Ireland and Scotland (15 Days)
What can I say about a last minute trip of a lifetime! We had the best guide, James Smith, and best driver, Paul. They were organised and professional, calm and skilful at dealing with a bunch of strange personalities; witty and insightful, sharing their life experiences with us; advising and guiding us with the history and the memories of home. Even missing my pickup point, I did not panic or worry. I’m sure James was shocked at receiving a call from Australia. Lucky for me, he picked up! Good to have a backup plan. Ireland and Scotland were everything I wished for. I loved all of it- the driving, excursions, free time, sightseeing, foods, local people, ancient and modern history, Dublin, Belfast, Glasgow, Donegal, Londonderry, Ring of Kerry, Giants Causeway, wall of Remembrance, Good Friday Peace agreement. I learnt about habits, customs, whiskey and shortbread, music, culture, accents and people, Celtic and Viking influences, symbolism and the importance of change and structure affecting our lives. Love the quirkiness too - The idea of Guinness offering a pint of beer for your blood donation is hilarious, doing your exams in Gaelga gives you a 20% advantage; museums and most event places have no entry fees. NB - (1) ensure all travellers have contact details, only for emergency use (updated as to country and location). (2) We would have loved to have a photo with our guide and driver. They were an important part of our experience! A Most enjoyable and memorable Trafalgar trip. I loved the little aside-jaunts and I loved the way James and Paul worked at keeping the journey interesting, well paced, stress less and fun. Highly commended!
Cultural Europe Tour Reviews
Very good tour , something’s we didn’t find out right until the moment. But, overall good tour.
To be honest, part of what made the trip fantastic was our group of 12- could not have had a better group to travel with- which is clearly luck, but a piece of our group being so cohesive was Nejca, our guide. She was perfect! Available but not pushy. Laid back, but willing to assert herself to make our experience the best. She made each person in the group feel special and appreciated. Thank you, Nejca! The itinerary was quite good as well. Although there were places I could have stayed for a day longer, I think it’s important to not stay too long and feel like time is wasted on a certain place on the tour. Transportation was efficient and Nejca did a great job getting us to our destinations easily and without rushing. Accommodations were very good- with the exception of Prague. Although our apartment was nice, it was clear that the residents of Prague feel that their space is being taken over by tourists- which is clearly true. I would have preferred to have stayed in a hotel in Prague-honestly, I would have paid more for it. Other than that, cannot day enough good things about the trip! Thank you!!

Videos and Online Profiles Link Suspects to Moscow Attack
Clothing and other details appear to show a connection between four suspects detained by Russia and the men who carried out the concert hall massacre of more than 130 people.
- Share full article
By Aric Toler , Malachy Browne and Paul Sonne
When four men were detained by the Russian authorities in connection with the massacre at a concert hall outside Moscow last week, they were dressed in the same attire as the assailants seen in videos of the attack, according to a New York Times analysis of footage from the hall, social media profiles and images leaked or released by Russia.
The identical clothing and other corresponding details suggest they carried out the attack. A video of one of the suspects being detained, for instance, shows him wearing a light brown T-shirt with a distinctive logo on the left breast and pants with a Boss label: Those details match the clothes worn by a gunman in propaganda footage of the attack released by the Islamic State, a.k.a. ISIS.
In addition, the Times analysis shows, the car that the suspects were driving when they were apprehended is the same color and type as one seen in footage from outside the concert hall during the attack.
The four suspects in the assault that left more than 130 dead were identified in a Moscow court hearing on Sunday night as Saidakrami M. Rachabalizoda, Shamsidin Fariduni, Muhammadsobir Z. Fayzov and Dalerjon B. Mirzoyev. They were charged with committing a terrorist act and remanded to custody until May 22.
Three of the suspects told the court they were from Tajikistan, and in interrogation videos reviewed by The Times, at least two men spoke Tajik. The videos show some of the men being beaten during their detention, and two of the men had clear injuries when they appeared in court. The fourth suspect appeared in court in a wheelchair with apparently limited ability to respond; a leaked copy of his passport suggests he is also a citizen of Tajikistan.
U.S. officials said the attack had been conducted by the Islamic State, which claimed responsibility and released photos of what it said were the attackers and video of the attack itself. President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia blamed the assault on “international terrorism” but did not mention the Islamic State. Russian state media laid the groundwork for blaming Ukraine, which denied any involvement.
Despite carrying out one of Russia’s deadliest terrorist attacks in decades, the gunmen seen in the footage did not appear to be highly trained, according to Rob Lee, a senior fellow at the Foreign Policy Research Institute, which is based in Philadelphia. He said the men seemed to be grouped together during the attack, instead of spreading out and potentially inflicting more damage.
The suspects also did not change their clothes after the massacre, and appeared to have fled in the same vehicle they used to arrive at the scene, both of which would make it easier for the authorities to track them down and link them to the scene.
Russia’s Investigative Committee, a top law enforcement agency, said on Saturday that the suspects had been detained near the city of Bryansk, about 230 miles southwest of Moscow, and that weapons had been recovered from a Renault car. Mr. Putin claimed the men had been trying to escape toward the border with Ukraine.
A video verified by The Times shows at least one suspect, Mr. Rachabalizoda, being marched through the woods to the M3 highway near Bryansk. A photograph also verified by The Times shows a heavily damaged white Renault nearby.
Mr. Rachabalizoda was filmed being detained in the woods, a couple of hundred yards from the car, and identifying himself under questioning. A video of his arrest shared on Telegram shows men cutting off a part of Mr. Rachabalizoda’s right ear and stuffing it into his mouth before leading him out of the woods. State media later published a video interrogation of Mr. Rachabalizoda that shows his ear is heavily bandaged.
In each of the videos, he is wearing clothes identical to those worn by one of the Crocus City Hall attackers.
Mr. Rachabalizoda wears the brown T-shirt with the distinctive logo and pants with a Boss label; they match the clothes worn by a gunman in the Islamic State video and photograph.
The Russian authorities identified a second suspect who was detained and interrogated as Mr. Fariduni.
During his questioning, Mr. Fariduni is seen wearing a gray collared T-shirt matching that worn by one of the four men in the Islamic State photograph.
The shoes worn by Mr. Fariduni during his interrogation also match those worn by one of the assailants seen in the Islamic State video of the attack; they bear the same distinctive white marking and thick soles.
Mr. Fariduni says during his interrogation that he traveled to Russia from Turkey on March 4, the footage showed. Several photographs posted to what appears to be his Instagram and Facebook accounts in February showed Mr. Fariduni at the Fatih Mosque in Istanbul.
A third suspect, Mr. Fayzov, is a 19-year-old barber who appears to have lived in Russia since last year, according to his profile on the Russian social media platform VKontakte. A short video that circulated on the Telegram social media platform shows him being interrogated in a hospital room, where he speaks Tajik and discusses receiving documents at an airport.
A leaked copy of his passport — bearing a face that matches one both in the VKontakte profile and in videos of the detained suspect — suggests he is from Tajikistan. The passport notes that he recently arrived in Russia and lived in Ivanovo, which corresponds with his VKontakte profile.
After his detention, Mr. Fayzov was photographed wearing a green T-shirt with a distinctive, dotted logo on the left breast, the same T-shirt worn by one of the men in the photograph of the assailants released by the Islamic State. Mr. Fayzov also wears the same T-shirt in a photograph posted to his VKontakte account.
A fourth suspect, Mr. Mirzoyev, spoke Tajik through an interpreter during an interrogation that was broadcast on Russian state television. The bearded man also appears to have been beaten during his detention, and his cheek, nose and forehead were bruised and bloodied.
In the video, Mr. Mirzoyev is seen wearing a long-sleeved, crew-neck green shirt, bluejeans and a black belt; they match the attire of one of the attackers in the Islamic State video.
In the ISIS video, the assailant slices the throat of a victim who is lying on the ground, apparently unconscious.
