Carnival closes in on $5bn order for mega cruise ship quartet at Fincantieri

US giant tipped to sign up for four 200,000-gt vessels

Carnival Corp is reported to be close to finalising a huge order for four cruise ships at Fincantieri in Italy.

Industry sources cited by Il Secolo XIX newspaper said a deal is well underway, but some details have still to be agreed.

The report said up to four vessels worth €5bn ($5.4bn) could be contracted, with the size put at more than 200,000 gt.

Only Royal Caribbean and MSC Cruises have opted for ships of more than 200,000 gt previously.

Carnival controls a fleet of 99 ships, including three smaller newbuildings due this year from Fincantieri.

As the sector recovers from the pandemic, the shipowner is said to be keen to modernise the fleet.

The order would be a coup for new Fincantieri chief executive Pierroberto Folgiero.

Fincantieri is not commenting, however.

Last year, Folgiero said the cruise market had bounced back and his company was expecting a rebound in orders from shipowners in the coming months.

The Trieste-headquartered group remains the largest cruise shipbuilder with a market share of more than 40%.

MSC added to orderbook

It has built more than 120 cruise ships since 1990 — or more than one-third of the global fleet.

The shipbuilder, which has deliveries scheduled up to 2028, counted 26 vessels in its orderbook in the first half of the year.

Fincantieri then added to its portfolio in September when MSC Cruises signed a contract for two vessels for its luxury travel brand Explora Journeys, which completed a total investment of €3.5bn in six ships.

MSC orders two more LNG-powered cruise ships at Fincantieri

MSC’s cruise division confirmed firm orders for two LNG-powered vessels for its luxury travel brand Explora Journeys with Italy’s Fincantieri.

The deal completes a total investment of 3.5 billion euros ($3.73 billion) in six luxury ships for Explora Journeys, according to a joint statement issued on Thursday.

Also, the contracts are subject to access to financing as per industry practice, the statement said.

The two new ships will pursue the use of liquefied hydrogen with fuel cells for their hotel operations while docked in ports to eliminate carbon emissions with the vessels’ engines switched off.

Moreover, the ships will also feature a new generation of LNG engines that will further tackle the issue of methane slip with the use of containment systems, the statement said.

They will also be capable of using alternative fuels such as bio and synthetic gas and methanol, it said.

Fincantieri will deliver Explora V and Explora VI in 2027 and 2028.

Fleet of LNG-powered cruise ships

Back in July 2022, Explora Journeys and Fincantieri signed a memorandum of agreement for the construction of these hydrogen and LNG-powered luxury cruise ships.

Explora Journeys also said at the time that the previously announced vessels Explora III and IV will be powered by LNG.

The Italian shipbuilder recently started budling the LNG-powered cruise ship, Explora III , for MSC’s luxury travel brand.

Scheduled to enter service in the summer of 2026, this will be the first ship in the Explora fleet to be powered by LNG.

In addition, the Italian shipbuilder also launched Explora II, just two months after the delivery of Explora I, and expects to deliver this vessel next year. These ships are not LNG-powered.

Fincantieri said that it plans to begin construction on LNG-powered Explora IV in January 2024 and complete it in early 2027.

Besides these vessels, MSC Cruises held a naming ceremony for its second LNG-powered cruise vessel, MSC Euribia, in the Danish capital Copenhagen on June 8.

France’s Chantiers de l’Atlantique   delivered MSC Cruises’ first LNG-powered vessel,  MSC World Europa , in October last year.

Earlier this year, the shipbuilder also  held a coin ceremony  for the third LNG-powered ship, MSC World America.

Eni, Fincantieri and RINA Establish Partnership for Decarbonization

Eni, Fincantieri and RINA have signed an agreement to develop joint initiatives for the energy transition, the shipbuilding company announced in a press release.

The partnership formalizes the commitment to develop joint projects, Fincantieri said, in line with the partners’ strategies, to decarbonize the maritime sector in the medium- to long-term with the goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050.

Additionally, the partners are said to be evaluating the establishment of a permanent global observatory, which would study future technological, regulatory, and market developments.

The three companies will conduct a comprehensive analysis and evaluation of the most sustainable alternatives to support the maritime decarbonization pathway, Fincantieri added.

This will also be based on the development of complementary solutions to fuels already available for other hard-to-abate sectors, the company added.

The partnership’s areas of interest also include an analysis of the reference energy infrastructure and the development of new logistic structures, including the investments that the sector requires.

“We are highly committed to supporting our clients in addressing the industrial challenges of the maritime energy transition, and this initiative is aimed at initially creating a hub of study to harness Italy’s extraordinary expertise in new technologies, novel fuels, and their profound industrial implications for the ship system,” said Pierroberto Folgiero, CEO and Managing Director of Fincantieri.

“We are very pleased to join forces with Eni and RINA in an alliance to materialize existing solutions and to pave the way for the future with a proactive ecosystem approach. Indeed, new technologies must be industrialized on board ships, just as new fuels must be produced and distributed at the dock. Only with a concept of “operationalizing innovation” can we lead our industry and project our shipbuilding leadership into the future,” he added.

“The collaboration with Fincantieri and RINA, two major Italian players, is a further step in our journey towards the transition and decarbonization of maritime transport. The understanding may be the subject of subsequent binding agreements that the parties will define in compliance with the applicable legislation, Fincantieri noted, including that relating to transactions between related parties.

8 passengers, including Garden City couple, to rejoin cruise ship after being left

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - The eight guests who were left on an African island nation by their cruise ship are hoping to get back on the ship on Tuesday.

In a statement, Norwegian Cruise Line said the eight are set to rejoin the ship in Dakar, Senegal.

The group was originally supposed to reboard on Monday in Banjul, Gambia, but the ship could not dock safely due to the weather.

Norwegian Cruise Line said their protocol means guests are typically responsible for any travel costs to rejoin the ship at the next port of call, but Norwegian will reimburse the group because of the weather issues.

The guests, which include a Garden City couple, Jill and Jay Campbell, haven’t been back on the ship since March 27, while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe, an African island nation.

Norwegian Cruise Line said the guests were on a private tour and did not make it back in time.

“We were waiting for the tender boats to come back and get us because our boat was anchored off the harbor, but they didn’t come back to get us, so we’re stranded here,” said Jay Campbell.

The Campbells were eight days into the 21-day cruise, which started in South Africa, when they were left.

Norwegian Cruise Line claims they’ve been working hard to get the guests back on board.

”Our team has been working closely with the local authorities to understand the requirements and necessary visas needed for the guests to rejoin the ship at the next available port of call,” the cruise line said.

The cruise line also said another guest was “medically disembarked” on March 27 while the ship was in São Tomé and Príncipe.

After leaving a hospital on the island, that guest was escorted on a flight to Portugal, “and then put in the care of airport staff to continue her journey to the United States,” Norwegian Cruise Line said.
