Phase-I extension is the first stretch of work directly taken up by Kochi Metro Rail Limited.

With the inauguration of Phase IA, Kochi Metro would cover at least 27 km with 24 stations.

The revenue operations of both stations would begin at 7 pm soon after Modi dedicates the stations to the people of Kochi.

As the SN junction and Vadakkekotta stations are opening for revenue operations, KMRL is expecting to touch an average of one lakh commuters per day, it added.

The railway projects-related ceremonies would also be held at CIAL, a southern Railway press release said.

Among the railway developments projects for Kerala, Modi will lay the foundation stone for three station redevelopment projects worth an estimated Rs 1,059 crore, the release said.

“These railway stations will be equipped with state-of-the-art amenities and world-class facilities such as dedicated arrival/ departure corridors, aesthetically designed interiors with facilities for differently-abled passengers, skywalks, spacious parking lots, attractive landscape with gardens and inter-modal transport facilities,” it said.

The Prime Minister will dedicate to the nation the doubling of 27 km of tracks of the Kuruppanthara-Kottayam-Chingavanam section completed at a cost of Rs 750 crore, the release said.

With this, the entire 634 km stretch from Thiruvananthapuram to Mangaluru is fully doubled now, promising faster and seamless connectivity for the travelling public, it said.

He will also dedicate to the nation a newly electrified section between Kollam-Punalur completed at a cost of Rs 76 crore and will flag off special train services as well between Kottayam-Ernakulam and Kollam-Punalur.

PM Narendra Modi's roadshow in Kerala's Thrissur on 3 January | Photo: ANI

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will arrive in Kerala today on a two-day visit, in what’s said to be a part of the BJP’s strategy to open its account in the southern state where it has never won a seat in general elections. This will be his second such trip this month.

Speaking to ThePrint, Kerala BJP leader M.T. Ramesh said that the PM will hold a “massive” roadshow in Kochi Tuesday evening , followed by puja and darshan at Guruvayur Temple Wednesday morning. “Prime Minister Narendra Modi has some keen observations and hopes from Kerala. The entire cadre is quite motivated as the PM himself is leading from the front . He will also perform puja and darshan at Thriprayar Shree Ramaswami Temple in Thrissur district,” he added.

The Thriprayar Shree Ramaswami Temple is one of the famous temples of Kerala with Hindu god Ram as its main deity. Modi’s visit comes days before the consecration ceremony of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya.

According to BJP sources, the party organisation is not “very” strong in Kerala yet, “and strategically the party has decided to perform on a few seats including Thrissur”, which is one of the key areas where the party seems confident about its success.

In the 2019 Lok Sabha elections, the BJP had fielded actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi from Thrissur and recorded a 28.2 percent vote share, as against its 2014 candidate K. P. Sreesan’s 11.15 percent.

On Wednesday, Modi will also attend the wedding ceremony of Gopi’s daughter. According to BJP sources, the party is likely to again field Gopi as its candidate from Thrissur Lok Sabha constituency, which has a sizeable Christian community.

“We have been focussing on the women voters and they have shown a keen interest in the policies of the BJP. Apart from the PM’s roadshow, a huge women’s rally was also held in Thrissur and we got a good response on 3 January,” said a senior BJP leader.

M.T. Ramesh, quoted earlier, said that on Wednesday, Modi will also address a state-level party conference in Kochi which will be attended by around 7,000 booth-level workers.

The BJP has been focussing keenly on its Christian community outreach programmes by reaching out to beneficiaries of central schemes. According to the 2011 Census, 54.73 percent of Kerala’s population are Hindus, 26.56 percent are Muslims, 18.38 percent are Christians, and the remaining 0.33 percent follow other religions or no religion.

The BJP’s tally of MLAs in Kerala dropped to nil in 2021 from the lone seat it won in 2016. Contesting 115 of 140 seats in the 2021 Kerala assembly elections, it secured 11.3 percent of the total votes polled, but failed to win even a single seat.

In contrast, the party had contested 98 seats in 2016, securing 10.53 percent of the votes and winning one seat — Nemom in Thiruvananthapuram district — while its candidates stood second in seven seats.

The BJP’s vote share in Kerala was highest in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls, when it managed to secure around 13 percent of the total votes polled, but fell short of getting any of its candidates elected to Parliament from the state. The Congress-led United Democratic Front (UDF) went on to win 19 of Kerala’s 20 seats that year.

“We are focussing on 5-6 Lok Sbaha seats identified by the central leadership where the party has a greater chance of winning and special campaigns have been launched for these constituencies where it stands to gain ground,” said a party leader, not wanting to be named.

The PM will also review booth-level preparations of the state unit and interact with local leaders ahead of the polls. The party will be focussing on ‘brand Modi’ as part of which they will highlight ‘Modi’s guarantees’, it is learnt.

Modi’s big Christian outreach

Efforts have been made to reach out to the Christian community through special programmes with the Prime Minister’s special outreach to the community made during Christmas last year too.

Last year in April, during Easter, Modi had visited the Sacred Heart Cathedral in Delhi — his first visit to an Indian church as PM.

Then on Christmas day last year, the PM hosted members of the Christian community at his residence. This outreach became significant as it coincided with the state’s special drive of visiting the homes of Christian households by the party cadre.

“Apart from banking on Gopi, who accompanied him during his roadshow, the BJP also hopes that a large section of  Christians will also vote for it and this will ensure a win easily,” the senior BJP leader quoted earlier said.

Even as the BJP has been making concerted efforts to reach out to the Christian community, the efforts of the party were marred by the Manipur violence which saw attacks on Churches and grabbed international headlines. “We have told the cadre to explain how the Manipur violence was given a religious colour by the Congress and the Left whereas it was a clash of two groups,’ he said.

Eye on Tharoor bastion

Another seat where the BJP is exploring its options is the Thiruvananthapuram Lok Sabha constituency, represented by Congress leader Shashi Tharoor. This seat has been the only one among the 20 Lok Sabha seats where the party had managed to come second in 2014. “This is like a ray of hope for us and in 2014, O. Rajagopal had secured 32.2 percent votes and had lost by a very narrow margin to Tharoor,” said the senior BJP leader.

The BJP is also looking at Pathanamthitta in central Kerala, which it had focussed on during the 2019 Lok Sabha elections owing to the Sabarimala protests. Anto Antony of the Congress has been winning the seat since 2009.

Though the BJP emerged third, its vote share increased from 15.95 percent to 28.97 percent in 2014. The constituency has around 35 percent Christian voters, of whom a large number are non-Catholics, while 58 percent of the voters are Hindus. “This also explains the Christian outreach not only by the party but PM Modi too,” said the senior BJP leader quoted earlier.

Party may field Sitharaman, Jaishankar from Kerala

The BJP is also debating whether to field senior leaders including Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman and External Affairs Minister S. Jaishanker from Kerala to boost its prospects, it is learnt. The party is also concentrating on Attingal seat in Thiruvananthapuram district.

“The list for Kerala will surprise many and the way the PM has been focussing on the state, we can expect a list by the end of this month itself. V. Muraleedharan is also likely to contest from the state,” said a BJP source.

These will also lead to employment generation in the region and contribute to employment generation.

Prime Minister will also dedicate to the nation the Demonstration Fast Reactor Fuel Reprocessing Plant (DFRP) at Indira Gandhi Centre for Atomic Research (IGCAR), Kalpakkam.  The DFRP, developed at a cost of Rs. 400 crore, is equipped with a unique design, which is the only of its kind in the world and is capable of reprocessing both carbide and oxide fuels discharged from the fast reactors.  It is entirely designed by Indian scientists and signifies a crucial step towards building large commercial-scale fast reactor fuel reprocessing plants.

Among other projects, Prime Minister will inaugurate the 500 bedded Boys’ Hostel ‘AMETHYST’ of National Institute of Technology (NIT) – Tiruchirappalli.

PM in Lakshadweep

In his visit to Lakshadweep, Prime Minister will inaugurate, dedicate to Nation and lay the foundation stone of development projects worth more than Rs 1150 crore.

In a transformative move, the Prime Minister had resolved to overcome the challenge of slow internet speed in the Lakshadweep island by initiating the Kochi-Lakshadweep Islands Submarine Optical Fiber Connection (KLI - SOFC) project and made announcement regarding the same in the Independence Day speech in August 2020 at Red Fort. The project has now been completed and will be inaugurated by the Prime Minister. This will lead to an increase of internet speed for more than 100 times (from 1.7 Gbps to 200 Gbps).  For the first time since independence, Lakshadweep will be connected through Submarine Optic Fibre Cable. The dedicated submarine OFC will ensure a paradigm shift in communication infrastructure in the Lakshadweep islands, enabling faster and more reliable internet services, telemedicine, e-governance, educational initiatives, digital banking, digital currency usage, digital literacy etc.

Prime Minister will dedicate to the Nation the Low Temperature Thermal Desalination (LTTD) plant at Kadmat. This will produce 1.5 lakh litres of clean drinking water every day. Prime Minister will also dedicate to the nation the Functional Household Tap Connections (FHTC) in all households of Agatti and Minicoy islands. The availability of potable water was always a challenge in the islands of Lakshadweep as being a coral island, it has very limited ground water availability. These drinking projects will also help in strengthening the tourism capacity of the islands, leading to increased local employment opportunities.

Other projects which are dedicated to Nation include the solar power plant at Kavaratti, which is the first ever battery backed solar power project of Lakshadweep. It will help to reduce dependency on Diesel based Power Generation plant; and the new administrative block and 80 Men barrack in India Reserve Battalion (IRBn) Complex at Kavaratti.

Prime Minister will lay the foundation stone of the renovation of Primary Health Care facility in Kalpeni and the construction of five model Anganwadi Centres (Nand Ghars) in the five islands of Androth, Chetlat, Kadmat, Agatti and Minicoy.

Lok Sabha Polls 2024: Behind PM Narendra Modi's frequent visits to south is BJP's target 370

Whatsapp

Of the 127 seats in five southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Telangana and Lakshadweep, the BJP could win only 29 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Of these, 25 came from Karnataka and four from Telangana.

PM Narendra Modi during a rally at Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu on February 27.

On February 27, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was all praise for AIADMK icons MG Ramachandran (MGR) and J Jayalalithaa.

Speaking at a valedictory meeting of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) state president K Annamalai’s ‘En Mann En Makkal’ padayatra in Tamil Nadu's Tirupur, the prime minister called MGR an “incomparable leader" besides referring to Jayalalithaa’s governance as the hallmark of dedicated service to the people of the state

Some analysts said the comments were PM Modi's appeal to the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam ( AIADMK ) vote bank while others said that it was his indirect reach-out to AIADMK, the opposition party in Tamil Nadu that was a BJP ally until September last year.

On Wednesday, PM Modi called the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leaders ‘blind’, over a state minister’s ad for a new Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) spaceport featuring an image of a rocket with the Chinese flag symbol.

The prime minister accused the leaders of DMK, the ruling party in Tamil Nadu, of “belittling" India’s achievements — particularly its space programme and said the ad was “an insult to scientists".

Southern push

Analysts can differ, but one thing remains undisputed - Prime Minister Modi and the BJPs' efforts to make inroads in the south where the saffron party's presence, except in Karnataka, has not been up to the mark ahead of Lok Sabha polls.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi was in Kerala and Tamil Nadu on February 27-28 as part of his ambitious southern push. This is PM Modi's third visit to the southern states this year.

The PM began the year with a tour of Tamil Nadu, Lakshadweep , and Kerala on January 2-3, in which he inaugurated developmental projects worth thousands of crores. PM Modi also took up his 11-day tour to South India where he visited several temples associated with Ramayan in the run-up to the inauguration of the Ram Mandir in Ayodhya on January 22. In his latest two-day trip, the prime minister said that the BJP would win “double-digit" seats in Kerala while the neighbouring Tamil Nadu would “create history in 2024".

Of the 127 seats in five southern states of Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, and Telangana and Union Territory Lakshadweep, the BJP could win only 29 in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Of these, 25 came from Karnataka and four from Telangana. The party drew a blank in Tamil Nadu, Kerala, and Andhra Pradesh in 2019.

Sources said that the BJP’s key focus will be 84 seats in South India, declared ‘weak’ category seats that the party has never won. The number is crucial if the party has to achieve its target of 370 seats for the BJP and 400 + for the NDA, according to the analysts.

Prime Minister Modi had for the first time mentioned the target 370 while speaking at a rally in Jammu and Kashmir earlier this month. The BJP government abrogated Jammu and Kashmir's Article 370 , granting it a special status, in 2019,

Speculation within the BJP suggests that PM Modi’s frequent visits to the south show his desire to contest the upcoming Lok Sabha polls from a constituency in Tamil Nadu, or any neighbouring state, apart from his constituency in Varanasi.

Focus on booths

The party also has plans to send senior party leaders and Union ministers to the states south of Vindhya ahead of the 2024 polls. The idea is to meet party workers with a focus on central schemes.

“Work on connecting people from your booth to the voter list, encourage the first-time voters, and inform them about the benefits of voting," Prime Minister Modi said while addressing the Shakthikendra Incharges Sammelan in Kochi, Kerala on January 17.

In Karnataka, the state which it lost in 2 023 assembly elections , the BJP is making amends. Apart from an alliance with Janata Dal (Secular) to consolidate the Vokkaliga vote, the BJP is mulling replacing more than half the MPs from the state in the upcoming elections.

In Telangana, after its impressive performance by winning eight seats and doubling its vote share, the BJP is working on some organisational measures and is aiming to win at least 10 of the 17 Lok Sabha seats. The party is also planning to stitch up alliances in Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu ahead of the 2024 general elections.
