NEVER STOPPED LAUGHING

Saw him May 5, 2018, at the Tuacahn Amphitheater in St George UT. He performed nonstop for 90 minutes. He had just the right mix of humor. Very little political, nothing offensive, so reminiscent of the old Tonight Show. I haven't laughed that hard in a long time.

JAY LENO APRIL 7,2018

The best comedy show I have ever seen. Jay covered a lot of current events and was on his game. His stand-up style is reminiscent of his Tonight Show monologues. He took time to pose for pictures and sign autographs after the show. One of the classiest persons in show business.

JAY LENO ROCKS!

Flawless performance from a master stand up comedian. Jay Leno is at the top of his game and like a fine Bordeaux his comedy has more depth with the passing of time. Take your breath away laughter is followed by insightful commentary and heartfelt stories. And Roy Thompson Hall provides a luxurious and intimate experience.

Great evening....lots of laughs...comes across as a regular guy...

Jay is as sharp as ever! Great delivery of contemporary funny anecdotes. Doesn’t need profanity to be funny! Didn’t hot political controversy either! Just fun! Laughed a lot and loved his To Go jokes!!

TOTALLY UNDERWHELMED

I attended the Jay Leno show Apr 27 and was totally underwhelmed. I had anticipated, with this mans cache a little entertainment. What I experienced was a man walking on stage with NO introduction door opens Jay walks out and starts..HUH? where was the lead in where was the story where was the "HEEEEERRS Jay Leno. These tickets were 122/piece not cheap..GREAT seats super theater, but where was a little Hollywood? I am not talking the Rocketts and a Van Halen light show, but give me a little more than a 68 year old dude walking out of a door! Yes I did laugh at a number of his jokes, I'm a fan of this legendary comedian, but for heaven sake I got more out of seeing Rickles in 1977 and talk about that show to this day! So there you have it 1 fellow's view, but will not be giving Jay any of my money.....oh sorry to make matters worse I was given the tickets they cost me 0

Jay Leno on stage is very much like Jay Leno on screen. Maybe just a wee bit edgier than he was when hosting “The Tonight Show” on late-night TV all those years.

“Edgy” isn’t really a word that one would think to apply to Leno as a rule. “Affable” fits the man much better. On stage he comes across as genuine and friendly — if it’s all fake and he’s really some raging tyrant backstage, the man missed his calling as an actor.

Leno brought his comedy to the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts in downtown Orlando on Friday night; he’s the first comedian I’ve seen use the new Steinmetz Hall. Turns out, it’s a good spot for comedy with the hall’s intimate feel and good sightlines.

Leno, 71, knows how to pitch his standup show to the demographic filling the seats, though to his credit he only mentioned “the old days” once or twice. He trots out Walter Cronkite and the Sears catalog as cultural touchstones — scoring an easy but hearty laugh at the expense of beleaguered Sears.

Leno on the wonder of ordering from the fabled catalog: “Eight weeks later it was right there!”

He’s careful not to offend on the political front: One Biden joke, one Trump joke, both sillier than truly insulting.

Like a lot of good comedy, Leno’s is based on trying to make sense of the world around him — from the viewpoint of Americans of a certain age. When he approaches the edge of edginess, it’s with the twinkle of an uncle who knows he’s being a little naughty.

He opens with a Harvey Weinstein joke, describes a new app that checks for prostate cancer with that big grin, and references pornography and bacon-flavored condoms in his quips. One of the cleverest jokes of the night involves Kim Kardashian’s posterior — this time delivered completely deadpan.

jay leno tour review

The edgiest — one that provokes imagery of guns in school.

“It’s very hard to write a school-shooting joke,” he notes, and because he’s the comforting face that millions watched nightly as they settled into bed he gets away with it.

His rapid-fire opening segment gets good mileage out of the COVID-19 pandemic, using it to score laughs just moments apart on topics as disparate as the plastic-surgery prone women of Beverly Hills and the Dollar Store.

And he has other topical fun with Amazon and the Apple Store, in which he describes a typical worker as only a Boomer could.

Soul singer and songwriter Morgan James opened for Jay Leno on Friday in Steinmetz Hall at the Dr. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts.

He later segues into longer comic stories about his wife and parents — nothing too embarrassing, gently ribbing his family, perhaps, but not mocking or belittling them. It’s a testament to how comedy can be funny without being mean.

On Friday, Leno’s 70-minute set was preceded by singer Morgan James with husband Doug Wamble on guitar. Her soulful voice also sounded great in Steinmetz with the nuances of the guitar coming through.

She showed off her incredible range on a cover of Mariah Carey’s “Emotions,” and delivered original music and hits by Elton John and Aretha Franklin in appealing retro style. Like Leno, she’s fine keeping things old school.

Jay Leno

The moment he took over for Johnny Carson on “The Tonight Show,” Jay Leno became the king of late night, and despite moving on from the role, the Television Hall of Famer went on to host the car-themed “Jay Leno’s Garage” and the revived game show “You Bet Your Life.”

In between, the multi-faceted entertainer regularly returns to stand-up comedy, an occasion which filled up the red hot Hard Rock Live Northern Indiana on Veterans Day, where for precisely 90 minutes, he ran through nearly every cultural topic imaginable.

Jay Leno

Devoid of being overly raunchy, the headliner compared the pornography of back in the day to now, dissected the side effects of several prescription drugs and spoke up against cancel culture, all with his signature wit firmly in tact.

Along the way, he referenced the disgraced Bill Cosby, “Uber driver” Kevin Spacey and the constantly high Willie Nelson, plus a few minor yet humorous barbs at both President Joe Biden and Donald Trump before quickly backing away and insisting it would an apolitical performance.

Instead, he pivoted to remarking about political correctness, especially compared to how it used to be, rewriting the lyrics to Isaac Hayes’ funky “Theme From ‘Shaft’” to fit modern protocol and recalling how some previous interns seemed to speak a different language all together.

Given the Gary venue isn’t very far from Chicago, Leno even recalled opening for legendary singer/actress Freda Payne at Mister Kelly’s and dining at Mr. Beef where he got into a heated discussion with some fellow Italians over their exaggerated heritage on “The Sopranos.”

Jay Leno

“We could not tell these jokes if it weren’t for you my friend,” Leno remarked while thanking the Hard Rock for its hospitality, and in turn, was met with a similar reaction, if only for his uncanny ability to make this increasingly heavy world temporarily feel at least a little bit lighter.

The Tonight Show with Jay Leno - All You Need to Know BEFORE You Go (2024)

Review: Jay Leno starts retirement with stop at Clearwater's Capitol Theatre

  • Steve Persall Former Times Staffer

CLEARWATER — Sunday night at the Capitol Theatre, Jay Leno continued kicking a late-night habit, moving from the Tonight Show to a tomorrow looking a lot like Leno's yesterdays as a relentlessly touring stand-up comedian.

A less-obsessed entertainer would take a break after 22 years hosting — and briefly lurking over — an American institution. Leno finished his Tonight Show reign Thursday, decompressing the way mortal comedians eke out livings: whirlwind touring across Florida in a weekend.

Leno came to Clearwater armed with jokes ripped straight from headlines of newspapers yellowed with age. The question of whether the 63-year-old comic is still funny was answered early and often, even without benefit of doctored celebrity videos, stupid human tricks and big-band rim shots for his punchlines. Just a man, a microphone and time-capsule comedy that still killed.

Of course, Leno has always been a matter of taste, and taste in his case is usually a matter of age. The crowd at the Cap was squarely in his target demographic, tapping feet to a warm-up act of Gershwin and Berlin classics sung a cappella by a talented chorus that could be their grandchildren.

Leno's previous employment was a side-stepped topic most of the evening, after he was introduced as Tonight Show host, but protested from off-stage: "No. Not anymore."

Stepping out in a dark suit that could've come off NBC's rack, a purple print tie and U.S. flag lapel pin, Leno started working baby-blue right off the bat, with jokes slightly naughtier than he'd get away with on network television.

No chit-chat or shout-outs to the city or the renovated Capitol Theatre that other comics would use to fill time. Leno flipped a switch and jokes kept pouring out. It didn't matter if you'd heard before that Hugh Hefner's fiancee is "bedpanning for gold," or wondered if anyone would stop laughing at phrases like "explosive diarrhea." Leno was in his element, belching jokes like a silver-haired smokestack for 80 minutes to his adoring fans.

Comedian Jay Leno performs onstage.

Surviving a freak car fire last year somehow didn’t stop 72-year-old comedian Jay Leno .

Apparently, neither did a dangerous motorcycle accident that left him with several broken bones.

Rather than rest and recuperate, the former “Tonight Show” host will fulfill his tour date obligations and perform to audiences all over North America at his 15 shows from Feb. 2 through April 8 which include gigs at Salamanca, NY’s Seneca Allegany Events Center on March 18 and Englewood, NJ’s Bergen Performing Arts Center on April 8.

And you needn’t fear — Leno claims he’s fine.

“I’m OK,” Leno told the Las Vegas Review Journal . I’m working. I’m working this weekend.”

While you might think tickets would cost an exorbitant amount to see this death-defying, septuagenarian comedy legend, we’re happy to report that that’s not always the case.

In fact, we found some tickets going for as low as $58 before fees on Vivid Seats at the time of publication.

All prices are subject to fluctuation.

Now, here’s everything you need to know about how you can see Jay Leno live in 2023.

Jay Leno 2023 tour schedule

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to the cheapest tickets available can be found below.

Note: The New York Post confirmed all above prices at the publication time. All prices are subject to fluctuation and include additional fees at checkout .)

Vivid Seats is a verified secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They offer a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and your tickets will be delivered prior to the event.

Jay Leno injuries

As noted earlier, Leno sustained major injuries after two car accidents this year.

In mid-December, a car garage explosion , left him serious facial burns.

“The fuel line was clogged, so I was underneath it,” Leno, 72, explained to Hoda Kotb in an NBC News  “Today” show interview .

“And I said, ‘Blow some air through the line.’ And suddenly, boom, I got a face full of gas.”

More recently, he disclosed that he got knocked off his motorcycle.

He then disclosed he has a “a broken collarbone…two broken ribs (and) two cracked kneecaps.”

Still, he was able to joke about it.

Whether his punchline is any good is up to the eye of the beholder.

You can check out his hot take on what transpired here .

How to watch “Jay Leno’s Garage”

If you’ve been meaning to binge Leno’s famous car show, you can starting literally right now.

All seven seasons of the long-running, recently canceled show where Leno “explores all things automotive” can be streamed on Peacock.

Guests on the show include Sting , Jeff Dunham , Adam Carolla , Gabriel Iglesias and Alonzo Bodden .

The show was dropped by CNBC after the network announced they were looking to air reruns of “Shark Tank,” and “Undercover Boss” as well as original business documentaries during primetime hours.

JAY LENO DESCRIPTION

Most people are familiar with Leno's every-man style from his work as the host of the Emmy Award-winning "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno." His comedy touches on topics that audiences of all ages can relate to, and he doesn't use a lot of profanity.

Before "The Tonight Show," Leno worked as a stand-up comedian headlining in clubs across the country. He performed as an opening act for well known entertainers including Tom Jones and John Denver. In 1977 Leno made his debut on "The Tonight Show starring Johnny Carson" and was recognized as a permanent guest host in 1987.

Leno started his tenure as the main host for "The Tonight Show" in 1992 and went on to host the show for 17 years. In 2009, he passed the torch to fellow late night comedian Conan O' Brian. Leno's new talk show, "The Jay Leno Show," debuted that same year. After the show ended, Leno returned to star as the host of the "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" in March 2010 replacing O'Brien. In 2014 Leno retired from the "Tonight Show" and Jimmy Fallon replaced him.

Leno returns, ‘Curb’ ends

Assorted ramblings from the world of entertainment:

• Jay Leno will return to the Mahoning Valley for a Sept. 12 performance at Stambaugh Auditorium.

Leno hosted “The Tonight Show” for 22 seasons, succeeding Johnny Carson behind the desk, but he never left standup comedy, regularly performing on weekends while doing the television show.

If I’m remembering correctly, Leno played at Powers Auditorium in the late 1980s or early ’90s before beating David Letterman for “The Tonight Show” gig, and his most recent area appearance was a show at Warren’s Packard Music Hall in 2016.

Even though he was feeling under the weather that day, car fanatic Leno took a pre-performance tour of the National Packard Museum next door.

Leno also hosts “Jay Leno’s Garage,” which appeared on CNBC and currently can be seen on YouTube. One of the vehicles featured on that show — a replica of the boattail speedster used by engineer Jesse Vincent to test new engines he designed for Packard Motors — was built by Jerry Miscevich, who grew up in Warren and Mecca. The replica vehicle now is part of the National Packard Museum’s permanent collection.

Tickets for Leno range from $39 to $89 and will go on sale at 10 a.m. Friday at experienceyourarts.org. The show is being presented by The Muransky Companies and will benefit The United Way of Youngstown and the Mahoning Valley.

• “Curb Your Enthusiasm” ended Sunday after 12 seasons on HBO.

Howland native Jeff Schaffer has been involved with the show since its inception, and for the last several years he’s partnered with Larry David on the comedy, serving as its principal director and as a co-writer and co-producer with David.

Back when I interviewed him in February at the start of the season, Schaffer understandably was tight-lipped about what to expect from the final season.

Spoiler alert for those who aren’t caught up — David and Schaffer decided to embrace the divisive “Seinfeld” finale and have the season end with David on trial for violating Georgia’s voting laws by giving a woman a bottle of water while waiting to cast her ballot.

A parade of past guest stars return as witnesses to share tales of David’s bad behavior from previous seasons, and David (like Jerry, George, Elaine and Kramer) ends up in jail … at least for a while.

Schaffer could be a little more forthcoming about the ideas behind the final season in an interview this week with the New York Times after the finale.

“When you start with a crime, one of the possibilities is a trial,” Schaffer told the Times. “So that was floating around, one of the many paths that we could go down.

“We were just talking about a little story, of Larry not wanting to be involved in a kid’s lesson. We talk out the scene and distill it down to a few lines. In character, he said, ‘I’m 75 years old, I’ve never learned a thing in my life.’ And that was the moment for us where we said, ‘Hold on a second, what if we just blew that up and just told everybody: ‘Larry’s never learned his lesson,’ and just did the ‘Seinfeld’ trial again?’ Just owned it. Like, we know what you thought of that, and we don’t care. We’ve learned nothing. We’re going right at it. We’re steering the Titanic right back at the iceberg.”

I didn’t hate the “Seinfeld” ending the way many fans did, but I described it as “vaguely unsatisfying” back in 1998 (I looked it up).

Maybe I’ve mellowed; maybe I was better prepared this time for what “Curb” delivered. But it felt like both a fitting homage to the show that gave David the creative freedom to do 12 seasons of “Curb” and different enough to serve as a satisfying conclusion … assuming David doesn’t change his mind and bring the show back for another round.

Acclaimed TV late-night show host, admired stand-up comedian, best-selling children's book author, much-in-demand corporate speaker, TV and movie voice-over artist, pioneering car builder and mechanic, and philanthropist… Jay Leno is widely characterized as “the hardest working man in show business.”

Jay Leno 's late-night television ratings domination included two decades as the host of the #1-rated “The Tonight Show with Jay Leno ” – after the first two years Jay Leno never lost a single ratings year in which he served as host.

Leno currently produces and is host of the CNBC primetime series Jay Leno 'S GARAGE now in its seventh season. “ Jay Leno 's Garage” explores the world of cars, never forgetting that it's the people behind the wheel who provide the real stories. The series debuted in October 2015 and delivered CNBC's most-watched first season in network history.

The show is an outgrowth of JAY LENOS GARAGE YOUTUBE CHANNEL which Leno produces and has an international following on the Web and has garnered several Emmy Awards and nominations for Outstanding Special Class–Short-Format Nonfiction Programs.

His new product line Jay Leno 'S GARAGE ADVANCED VEHICLE CARE launched in December of 2016 and has been well received by the Automotive Industry worldwide.

Products are available on www.lenosgarage.com .

Jay Leno is currently hosting “YOU BET YOUR LIFE” and the second season returned in Fall 2022.  This comedy game show is co-hosted by Jay's longtime Tonight Show bandleader Kevin Eubanks and features strangers teaming up to answer a series of trivia questions with the goal of winning thousands of dollars.

When he's not on TV, Leno performs more than 100 stand-up shows annually across the country and internationally, participates in numerous charity and corporate events, does voice-overs for animated series, pens children's books, and writes a monthly column in various automotive magazines.  And in his “spare” time (as if he has any), he enjoys working on his collection of classic cars and motorcycles.  In fact, he has built a number of cars, including an acclaimed eco-car in his eco-friendly green garage.

Leno is the recipient of many honors, including Emmy, People's Choice, and TV Guide awards, Harris Poll selection as most popular star on television, the Hasty Pudding Award at Harvard University, The Mark Twain Prize, recipient of the Patriot Award given by the Congressional Medal of Honor Society , a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame, and being the first person to drive the pace car of all major NASCAR events.

He and his wife Mavis, an ardent human rights activist, live in Los Angeles.

Arsenio Hall became a household name with the success of his Emmy Award-winning late-night talk show “The Arsenio Hall Show.” The versatile actor, comedian and producer first became involved in the arts at “The Cleveland Playhouse” and continued to hone his craft through his Kent State University years.

In 1979, Hall moved from Ohio to Chicago, Illinois where he tried his hand at stand-up comedy and was discovered by jazz singer Nancy Wilson . In the following few years Arsenio toured, he opened for twenty major headliners including Patti LaBelle , Aretha Franklin , Tina Turner and Stevie Wonder . Hall attempted to diversify his career by making numerous appearances on television shows such as “Solid Gold” and “The Tonight Show Starring Johnny Carson ” and doing his first film cameo in “Amazon Women on the Moon.” In 1987, Hall was asked to replace Joan Rivers on the Fox Network series “The Late Show.” On the strength of his work as interim host, he was signed to a film and television deal with Paramount Pictures, which subsequently led to the opportunity to co-write and co-star in the hit comedy “Coming to America.”

On January 3, 1989, “The Arsenio Hall Show” made its debut. Virtually overnight, Arsenio changed the face of late-night television by captivating young viewers across the country. During his successful five-year run as Executive Producer, Arsenio provided a forum for cutting edge comedy, politics and the television debut of pop superstars.

Arsenio was featured as the comical “Carl Cristall” in Exodus Films' animated feature “Igor,” and was featured in the HBO Sports Documentary “Magic & Bird: A Courtship of Rivals.” In 2013, Hall returned to late-night television as executive producer and host of the CBS Television Distribution/Tribune Broadcasting nationally syndicated “The Arsenio Hall Show,” which aired on stations around the country during the 2013 - 2014 season. He also appeared in a cameo role in Adam Sandler 's ‘90s set Netflix comedy film “Sandy Wexler.” In 2017, Arsenio was featured Monday mornings as co-host of the popular nationally syndicated radio program “The Tom Joyner Morning Show” and also appeared on the ABC comedy “The Mayor.” He recently enjoyed a triumphant return to his first love of stand-up comedy performing at venues across the country and released his current Netflix stand-up special “Smart & Classy” which can be streamed in various countries across the world.

Most recently, Arsenio brought back his talk show for a 4-night run during the Netflix is a Joke festival in Los Angeles. He can be seen reprising his role as Semmi and other surprise characters in Amazon Prime's Coming 2 America now streaming.

Conan O’Brien’s Return to ‘The Tonight Show’ Was Melancholy, Powerful TV

THE TONIGHT SHOW STARRING JIMMY FALLON -- Episode 1958 -- Pictured: (l-r) Comedian Conan OíBrien during an interview with host Jimmy Fallon on Tuesday, April 9, 2024 -- (Photo by: Todd Owyoung/NBC)

Tuesday night saw something that, fourteen years ago, might have seemed impossible: Conan O’Brien returned to “The Tonight Show.” And he was greeted with a standing ovation.

He was there, ostensibly, to promote a forthcoming Max series in which he travels the world meeting fans. But he’d come a long way just to get to 30 Rockefeller Center in 2024, and the interview with current “Tonight Show” host Jimmy Fallon functioned as a peace offering, or a marker of how much time has passed.

Popular on Variety

And he’s not, not really — what happened in 2010 stank, and he can feel however he likes about it. But say this much for Jimmy Fallon, of whose interviewing style I’ve been critical in the past: While this meeting of late-night fixtures lacked some of the intellectual gravity of the 2022 Seth Meyers-David Letterman interview , Fallon made one shrewd choice, which was to largely cede O’Brien the floor. It became apparent, over the course of the interview, that when Fallon wasn’t sure what to say, he was remaining silent, allowing O’Brien the experience, once more, of piloting a late-night segment. Early in the interview, O’Brien demonstrated what it had looked like when he pivoted his prodigiously tall body out from behind the host’s desk; he crouched near it. He wasn’t quite behind it. But Fallon let him share the space.

And Fallon’s “Tonight Show” is one on which O’Brien would feel welcome. (This is reminiscent of how Fallon rescinded the program’s ban on Joan Rivers, put in place after previous host Johnny Carson felt slighted by her. Leno had honored the ban, but Fallon hosted her some months before her 2014 death.) This is no small thing — Leno’s show, for obvious reasons, never had O’Brien on after 2010, but it wasn’t obvious or intuitive that Fallon would book O’Brien, either. Sometimes, it’s easier just to move on.

But then we wouldn’t have had the sweet, slightly melancholy moment of O’Brien, between old war stories from his long career, mentioning that traveling back to New York brought back what he called “flash memories.” He deflated the moment, slightly, noting that the memories are of absurdist pranks he did on the street, but the point remained: O’Brien had worked hard in his youth to create something, and long after the general public had moved on, it meant something to him, and to whomever else remembers. Late night, when it’s doing something right, can accommodate tonally complicated, emotionally rich moments like this; when host and guest are in sync, they can let the moment hang for a beat before moving on to the next joke. This interview seemed like a punctuation mark on a saga that has hung over O’Brien’s career, and like a reminder of the talent that he has for making great television.

The Jay Leno Show

Jay Leno towed 30 tons with a Tesla Semi and said it felt like nothing

  • Jay Leno got to drive the Tesla Semi, Elon Musk's electric big rig.
  • He said it felt a lot like driving a car.
  • He towed a 60,000 trailer with another Semi on it and said he could barely feel the extra weight.

Insider Today

Jay Leno had a field day with Tesla's new Semi truck on the latest episode of his car show, "Jay Leno's Garage." And it's one of the best looks yet we've gotten at what it's like to drive.

The comedian and car connoisseur got a tour of Elon Musk's electric big rig and even got to take it for a spin that culminated in hauling another Tesla Semi .

Tesla announced the Semi way back in 2017 as a cleaner solution to dirty diesel trucks. Production was supposed to start in 2019 but the first deliveries ended up going out to Pepsi in late 2022.

Related stories

Here are some cool things we learned from Leno's chat with Franz von Holzhausen (Tesla's chief designer) and Dan Priestley (Tesla's senior manager of Semi-truck engineering):

The Semi's shape was modeled after Japan's bullet trains . It's about twice as aerodynamic as regular, boxy trucks.

Eventually Tesla will make a Semi with a sleeper cab (where truckers can sleep on long-haul journeys), but the first ones are meant for day trips.

Tesla has made 60-70 trucks and is getting feedback from Pepsi before making tweaks and scaling production.

Leno took the Semi out on the road and remarked that it felt easy and familiar to drive. He said he liked the central seating position, camera views, and smooth acceleration.

"It's amazing. It moves just like a car," Leno said. "It doesn't feel clumsy or unwieldy. You don't feel like you're in some huge truck."

Then Leno and the Tesla team hooked up a trailer carrying another Semi and kept going. Leno said multiple times that the extra 60,000-70,000 pounds felt like nothing.

"You know, it's funny. I can't see the trailer in the mirror," Leno said. "So if you told me we didn't hook up, we just pulled away, I'd believe you."

Priestley said part of the reason is that the Semi senses how much weight it's hauling and adjusts how much power it delivers accordingly.

Then, Leno pulled a tight U-turn. Priestley said the Semi has a similar turning radius to Tesla's Model 3 sedan and Model Y SUV.

It's safe to say Leno was impressed, saying toward the end of the drive: "This is probably the biggest revolution in trucking since trucks replaced trains, isn't it?"

After Jay Leno made heartbreaking decision for his wife of 44 years, so did a judge

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Months after Jay Leno filed for conservatorship over his wife’s estate, a judge has made a decision.

The conservatorship hearing took place on April 9 at Los Angeles County Superior Court. People magazine was in attendance.

According to People, during the hearing, Mavis’ lawyers confirmed that they were “in agreement” with Leno’s move to become Mavis’ conservator, adding that she is “receiving excellent care with her husband, Mr. Leno.”

The judge agreed with Mavis’ counsel, saying, “I think she’s in the least restrictive environment. I think she’s in very good care with Mr. Leno.” As People reports, the judge then directed his statements at Leno.

“Everything you’re doing is right,” the judge told him. “I totally understand this is a difficult period.” The judge then confirmed that Mavis “consents” to the conservatorship and that Jay is “fit” to serve as conservator as Mavis continues to battle Alzheimer’s.

This decision comes after Leno filed documents with the court revealing Mavis “sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth.” The documents continued Mavis deals with “a lot of disorientation, [and] will ruminate about her parents who have both passed and her mother who died about 20 years ago.”

Despite her health battles, Mavis is said to still be a “delightful person” with a “charming personality.”

Mavis and Jay have been married for the last 44 years. They do not have any children.

Like the judge concluded, the documents called Jay Mavis’ “protector and she trusts him.” Her neurologist was quoted in the filing confirming just that, that Jay is “such a nice man and treats [Mavis] like gold.”

In a 2014 interview with The Washington Post , Mavis revealed that the reason she and Jay don’t have children is because of her. “I remember telling my mother when I was 7 or 8 that I was never going to get married or have children,” she said at the time. “To me, this is the way women get caught.”

Jay, who she called “the single kindest human being I ever met,” respected Mavis’ decision to not have children.

Jay Leno on 'The Slap,' 'clean' comedy, and his upcoming stand-up show at the Kravis Center

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Just like the rest of us, Jay Leno has some thoughts on "The Slap."

As he prepared to travel to West Palm Beach for his Sunday night stand-up comedy show at the Kravis Center, the comedian, television writer and former "Tonight Show" host discussed the slapping incident between actor Will Smith and comedian Chris Rock last month at the 94th Academy Awards in Los Angeles.

Smith, who was attending the ceremony as an Academy Award nominee — he won for Best Actor in a Leading Role — walked on stage as Rock was speaking and slapped the comedian in the face in response to a joke he made about Smith's wife, Jada Pinkett Smith. Smith then returned to his seat and continued to berate Rock.

Related: Chris Rock jokes he has 'my hearing back' after Will Smith Oscar slap, won't talk 'until I get paid'

More: Will Smith resigns from the Academy over Chris Rock slap at Oscars: 'I am heartbroken'

Leno, who called Smith a "good guy," said what he found most troubling about the incident was the anger displayed by Smith after he left the stage.

"To me, the thing that's most disturbing wasn't the slap, because he was kind of smirking after he slapped (Rock)," Leno said. "It was the yelling of the obscenities. Then you go, 'Whoa. What's going on here?' This is real anger."

Leno also took issue with an announcement by the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences that it planned to investigate the incident.

"What are you investigating?," Leno said. "It had to be the most recorded assault in history. I saw the back of his shoe, I saw Chris' ear. There were so many cameras on this incident. What are you investigating? I know sometimes things are just what they appear to be."

Leno also addressed ta number of other topics during a phone conversation Wednesday with the Palm Beach Daily News .

Stand-up has kept the 71-year-old California resident busy over the years, but Leno, an avid automotive collector, also writes a regular column for Popular Mechanics, hosts the TV series "Jay Leno's Garage" and the game show "You Bet Your Life" (the co-host is his longtime friend and former Tonight Show Band leader Kevin Eubanks), and does voice and acting work for TV.

What can guests expect from the Jay Leno show at the Kravis Center?

Traditional stand-up comedy. I've taken politics out, only because it's so divisive. I don't dwell on it. I find now that when you mention a candidate in a joke, the audience pauses to see which way the joke is going. Can't we just have comedy be comedy? Can't we just be fun? I'm doing this game show called "You Bet Your Life," and we sold it under the premise that we talk to people, but there's no politics of any kind. I find that there are an awful lot of people that I really like, but I know if we discuss politics, we wouldn't agree. So I don't bring it up.

What is your stand-up schedule like?

I go out by myself. I don't travel with anyone. I go to a place, I tell jokes, I come home. It's not like I start in August and I end in May. I'm kind of taking care of some family members now, so I come home every two days. I try to be home most nights of the week.

Looking back on your career, what are you most proud of?

I've been married 42 years, so I'm proud of that. It's amazing how disruptive (a comedy career) can be, especially if you're a performer. I've seen people who were funny, and then they get divorced, and then the funny is more anger than funny. I always say behind every successful man is a woman, and behind every unsuccessful man there are two women. It's my favorite expression, but it's true. I have a calm to my life that I enjoy. We have fun. We do stuff together. Your comedy works best when you have a clear head.

What advice would you give young comedians today?

Try to work clean. If you're reasonably clever, nobody notices. I've had people come up to me and go, 'I listened to you for 90 minutes, and I realized you didn't do any obscenities.' They didn't even notice it, because they're laughing at the joke. Bob Newhart never had to resort to it, and neither did (Don) Rickles. People think Rickles did, but he didn't. Not at all. I have nothing against any of the comics that work for me. If I take a comic who's never been on stage, it's easier if you can do it clean. There's a new guy, Nate Bargatze, and he's very funny. He works clean. Jim Gaffigan works clean, and he's very funny. That's the advice I would give to a new performer.

Do you have a favorite comedian that you follow, either past or present?

I like everybody. Robin Williams and I were good friends. I like all the comics. I can't say that there's any one more than the other, but you don't want to watch too many because then you get influenced.

How did you spend your time during the early days of the pandemic?

It was fine. I come from the 'never to explain, never to complain' school. To me, I was fortunate that this happened in the twilight of my career. I was always one of those guys that said I was never going to turn a job down because it's not enough money. I never wanted to be that snobby kind of guy. When relaxation is forced upon me, I actually sort of enjoy it. My wife and I did more stuff together, and I was OK. I felt sorry for new performers. When I first came to town, you could get up in a bar and pass the hat and tell jokes. You couldn't even do that during the pandemic. So I felt sorry for the young people that came out (to Los Angeles) to be stars, and they didn't even have the chance to show it.

Is there anything else we should know about you, or your stand-up act?

It's just comedy. It's not opinion. It's just fun. It's light. The news is horrible — the economy, inflation. It's just comedy. Have some laughs. It's light-hearted. Have a good time. I'm not attacking anybody. Everybody seems to like it. That's pretty much where we are.

Take a Guided Tour of Jay Leno’s Shop, Projects with His Restoration Blog

From Firebirds to steam-powered buggies, Jay Leno shows off what’s going on in his shop.

If you’ve missed seeing your buddies and hearing them talk about the terrible left turns their restoration projects are taking: Jay Leno can help. With his latest Restoration Blog, Leno takes you on a tour through his garage and shines a spotlight on the money pit projects his team was working on this past April.

It wouldn’t be a Leno video without time spent repairing steam-powered cars. Leno shows off a pair of them. One is a White that his team built the bodywork for, and the other? An engine-out service of his Doble steam car. Leno does a fantastic job explaining how the Doble engine worked. He also explains why it failed. Not surprisingly, it has similar problems to an internal combustion engine.

Leno also had to send his film crew home because of the coronavirus pandemic. That means this installment of Leno’s Restoration Blog not only captures Leno’s projects during their progress, it also could be a cultural touchstone years down the road.

Check out Leno’s Restoration Blog above and spend some time with your digital neighbor and his eccentric car collection.

SNYDE | Jay Leno’s wife ‘sometimes does not know her husband,’ doctors confirm in conservatorship filing

There are times when Jay Leno’s wife, Mavis, who suffers from dementia, “does not know her husband” or other key details about her life, doctors confirmed amid the comedian’s filing for conservatorship .

Mavis Elizabeth Leno, 77, suffers from an “advanced” and worsening form of dementia, which includes “a lot of disorientation,” wrote Ronald Ostrin, citing neurologist Dr. Hart Cohen, in new court documents obtained by Entertainment Tonight.

Ostrin, Mavis Leno’s court-appointed legal counsel, noted she “sometimes does not know her husband, Jay, nor her date of birth,” and she “ruminates about her parents who have both passed and her mother who died about 20 years ago,” per Cohen, who works at Los Angeles’ Cedars Sinai.

Ostrin’s statements come after he “received and reviewed substantial medical records” supporting Cohen’s claims.

The former “Tonight Show” host, 73, filed for conservatorship of his wife of more than 40 years in late January, according to court records obtained then by TMZ . At the time, it was reported that Mavis has Alzheimer’s disease , the most common form of dementia. It is characterized by a decline in thinking, behavior, social skills and one’s ability to function.

“Unfortunately, Mavis has been progressively losing capacity and orientation to space and time for several years,” read the petition for the conservatorship, NBC News reported at the time.

Leno “loves his wife very much” and treats her “like gold,” as Cohen told Ostrin, per the new filing, noting that the Emmy winner tried to delay the issue of a conservatorship “out of respect to her.” It’s unclear when Mavis was first diagnosed.

Unlike other conservatorships that enable the appointed party to manage the concerned party, Leno is only looking to gain conservatorship over Mavis’ estate in the event that something happens to him.

Vouching for Leno’s character, Ostrin recommended the court approve the estate conservatorship, noting he wants to “provide the least disturbance to Ms. Leno’s lifestyle and to preserve her dignity and ensure her safety,” according to ET.
