chardham tour

Uttarakhand, also known as Devbhoomi or the Land of Gods, is home to numerous temples and welcomes devotees all year round. Among the countless religious sites and circuits that devotees visit in Uttarakhand, one of the most prominent is the Char Dham Yatra. This Yatra or pilgrimage is a tour of four holy sites - Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath – nestled high up in the Himalayas. In Hindi, 'char' means four and 'dham' refers to religious destinations.

The high-altitude shrines remain shut for around six months every year, opening in summers (April or May) and closing with the onset of winter (October or November). It is believed that one should complete the Char Dham Yatra in a clockwise direction. Hence, the pilgrimage starts from Yamunotri, proceeds towards Gangotri, onto Kedarnath, and finally ends at Badrinath. The journey can be completed by road or by air (helicopter services are available). Some devotees even do a Do Dham Yatra or a pilgrimage to two shrines - Kedarnath and Badrinath.

The Yamunotri temple, lodged in a narrow gorge close to the source of River Yamuna (the second-most sacred Indian river after River Ganga) in Uttarkashi district, is dedicated to Goddess Yamuna. The district of Uttarkashi is also home to Gangotri dedicated to Goddess Ganga, the most sacred of all Indian rivers. Located in the Rudraprayag district lies Kedarnath, dedicated to Lord Shiva. Badrinath, home to the sacred Badrinarayan Temple, is dedicated to Lord Vishnu. The Char Dham Yatra is as divine as it is arduous but fulfills the soul!

The Badrinath-Kedarnath Samiti announces the opening dates every year as per Hindu Calendar which is assumed as final dates.

Chardham Yatra Closing Dates 2024

Closing date of Yamunotri Temple Shrine lies on auspicious day of Deepawali after a grand ceremony where Palanquin of Goddess Yamuna is carried away to Kharsali with grand procession. Gangorti Temple gates also get closed on Bhai Dooj, 2 days after lighting earthen lamps on Diwali. After this palanquin of Maa Ganga is carried to Mukhba Village for rest of the winter time. You can observe special prayers on Janmastmai, Vijayadashmi and Diwali. Kedarnath Temple also get closed on Bhai Dooj while Badrinath Temple get closed after 1 week of Diwali.

Yamunotri Temple

Nestled in the pristine Himalayan region of Uttarakhand, Yamunotri Dham stands as a unique testament to devotion and natural splendour. This sacred pilgrimage site, the source of the revered Yamuna River, offers a distinctive spiritual experience that transcends traditional religious journeys. Unlike many other Char Dham destinations, Yamunotri's uniqueness lies in its serene and untouched environment, where pilgrims embark on a trek through picturesque landscapes, dense forests, and bubbling hot springs to reach the temple. The temple itself, dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, exudes an aura of mysticism with its ancient architecture and tranquil surroundings. Pilgrims find solace in the rhythmic chant of mantras, the soothing sounds of the Yamuna's gurgling waters, and the warmth of the natural thermal springs that are believed to have healing properties.

The specific opening date of Yamunotri Temple is determined annually and is based on the auspicious day of Akshaya Tritiya. The opening ceremony begins with the temple priests performing special rituals to welcome the deity, Goddess Yamuna, back to her abode after the winter hiatus. The idol is unveiled amid Vedic chants and hymns. Pilgrims often gather to witness this auspicious event. Devotees and pilgrims who visit the temple during the opening ceremony are encouraged to offer prayers, perform pujas, and seek the blessings of Goddess Yamuna. It is believed that visiting the temple on this day and taking a dip in the Yamuna's icy waters cleanses one of sins and brings good fortune. The closing dates of Yamunotri Temple falls on Diwali. During the closing ceremony, special rituals are conducted by the temple priests to bid farewell to Goddess Yamuna as winter approaches and the region gets covered in heavy snowfall. The idol of the goddess is covered with a thick layer of silver and is carried down from the temple to the Kharsali village, which remains inhabited during the winter months.

Yamunotri Dham

Gangotri Temple

Gangotri is considered the source of the sacred Ganges River, which is not just a river but a goddess, Ganga. Pilgrims come here to witness the sacred moment when the Ganges emerges from the Gangotri Glacier, making it unique among the Char Dhams. The Gangotri Temple, dedicated to Goddess Ganga, is the main pilgrimage site. The temple is an exquisite example of Himalayan architecture and houses the sacred idol of the goddess. Pilgrims visit to offer prayers, perform rituals, and seek blessings. The spiritual atmosphere in Gangotri is palpable, as it is believed that a visit here can cleanse one's sins and lead to salvation. The landscape around Gangotri is awe-inspiring, with snow-capped peaks, lush meadows, and the resplendent Bhagirathi River. The serene and tranquil ambiance of this region creates a perfect setting for spiritual contemplation. The Temple opens on Akshay Tritiya in April/May with a huge opening ceremony. It is a significant event for pilgrims and devotees. It begins with the temple priests performing elaborate Vedic rituals and prayers.

The main highlight of the ceremony is the moment when the temple doors are opened, revealing the sacred idol of Goddess Ganga. This event is accompanied by the chanting of mantras and hymns. Devotees and pilgrims who visit Gangotri during the opening ceremony witness the divine rituals and seek the blessings of Goddess Ganga. Many take a ritualistic dip in the frigid waters of the Bhagirathi River, which is believed to purify the soul. The closing ceremony is a solemn occasion that marks the end of the pilgrimage season. It involves special prayers and rituals conducted by the temple priests. The temple idol of Goddess Ganga is covered in a thick layer of silver, signifying the goddess's return to her abode in the Gangotri Glacier as winter approaches.

Gangotri Mandir

Kedarnath Temple

Kedarnath Dham, nestled amidst the Himalayan peaks of Uttarakhand, stands as a unique spiritual sanctuary revered by millions. Its distinctiveness lies in its high-altitude location, perched at an elevation of 3,583 meters (11,755 feet), making it one of the Char Dhams and a revered destination for Lord Shiva devotees. The Kedarnath Temple , an architectural marvel, is the epicenter of this pilgrimage. Surrounded by pristine snow-clad peaks, it exudes an aura of serenity and devotion. What truly sets it apart is the belief that Lord Shiva himself, in the form of a conical lingam, resides here, perpetually enveloped by snow, and only accessible during the summer months.

Pilgrims embark on a challenging trek to reach this sacred abode, traversing rugged terrain and icy streams. This spiritual odyssey, characterized by unwavering faith and determination, offers a unique blend of adventure and devotion. Kedarnath, with its unparalleled natural beauty and divine aura, stands as an emblem of resilience, drawing seekers and wanderers into its mystical embrace. The Kedarnath opening ceremony is a grand and elaborate event. It begins with the temple priests performing ancient Vedic rituals and prayers. The highlight of the ceremony is the unveiling of the sacred idol of Lord Kedarnath, who is believed to reside in the temple in the form of a naturally occurring conical rock known as the "Bhagwan Shri Kedarnath Ji Ki Ban." Devotees and pilgrims who visit Kedarnath during the opening ceremony witness the divine rituals and seek the blessings of Lord Kedarnath. Many undertake a challenging trek to reach the temple and offer prayers. On the festival of Bhai Dooj, closing ceremony of Temple takes place.

Kedarnath Temple Images

Badrinath Temple

Badrinath Temple is dedicated to Lord Badrinath, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. What makes it unique is that Lord Badrinath is believed to be the only deity of the Pancha Badri temples who is depicted in a meditative posture rather than a standing or seated one, symbolizing deep contemplation and devotion. The temple's location in the rugged Himalayas and its high altitude make it accessible only during a limited period each year. It is open to pilgrims for around six months, typically from late April to early November. The rest of the year, it remains snowbound and inaccessible. Tapt Kund, a natural thermal spring near the temple, is considered holy by devotees. Pilgrims often take a ritualistic dip in these hot springs before entering the temple as it is believed to have purifying properties. Near Badrinath , there is a lesser-known temple called Bhavishya Badri, which is said to be the future residence of Lord Badrinath. Badrinath Gates open for Pilgrims after grand rituals and prayer ceremonies. Closing date generally lies after a week of Deepawali and announced by the Puja Samiti.

Tucked in the lap of the Himalayas, Char Dham temples are the spiritual epicentre for Hindus in India. Char Dham, a term coined by the prehistoric Hindu philosopher Shri Adi Shankaracharya, refers to the four abodes of God – Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, and Badrinath. According to Hindu mythology, it is believed that the Pandavas visited all the four shrines to absolve their sins before embarking on their journey to heaven. Till date, as April arrives, millions of devotees gather in Uttarakhand to undertake the tough Chardham Yatra, believing that it can open their gates to salvation. After starting from the origin of river Yamuna, Yamunotri Dham, pilgrims head towards the renowned Gangotri shrine. Thereafter, they visit Shri Kedarnath Dham, one of the twelve Jyotirlingas of Lord Shiva and finally end their holy journey at Shri Badrinath Dham, the only Dham sacred to Lord Vishnu. If you’re spiritually inclined and seeking a Char Dham tour to reconnect with God and fill your mind with spirituality, then pick any of the Chardham yatra package 2024 by MakeMyTrip.

Start your enlightening Chardham Yatra by seeking blessings at the sacred Yamunotri temple. Located amidst a picturesque green valley, Yamunotri is the place where the Yamuna originates. As per Hindu mythology, Yamuna is the twin sister of Yama (God of Death), one of the Ashtabharya of Krishna and daughter of Surya (the Sun God). Approachable by a six-kilometre trek from Janki Chatti, the holy town is mainly known for the sacred Gangotri Dham. The temple features a black marble statue of Goddess Yamuna, sitting beside the white stone idol of Goddess Ganga. Apart from the temple, you must include an excursion to Diyva Shila and hot water springs of Surya Kund and Gouri Kund in your Char Dham itinerary. Around a kilometre away from the main shrine is the Yamuna Glacier, located at an altitude of 6387 metre near the Bandarpunch peak in the Lower Himalayas. As per the legends, taking a dip in the streams flowing through Yamunotri Dham can absolve all your sins.

One of the 12 Jyotirlingas sacred to Lord Shiva and a part of the Char Dham and Panch Kedars (a group of 5 Shiva temples in Garhwal Himalayas) circuit, Kedarnath temple is an ancient holy temple. Many stories are associated with the origin of the temple. As per some of them, the temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya in the 8th Century. Other versions claim that the Pandavas worshipped Lord Shiva at the same place where the temple presently stands, to seek forgiveness for killing their cousins during the great war of Kurukshetra. Made of large grey stones, the temple has a Garbha Griha and a Mandap decorated with figures of various deities. To visit the temple, you will have to reach the last motorable point - Gaurikund and then walk or ride a pony for around 14 kilometres. However, if you’re booking a package with MakeMyTrip, you will also have an option to undertake Chardham Yatra by helicopter from Sirsi, Phata, or Guptakashi.

Badrinath temple, also known as Badrikashram, is the holiest of all the Char Dham temples where Lord Vishnu resides in his avatar of Badrinarayan. There are various stories associated with the origin of the Badrinath temple. As per one of them, Lord Vishnu once performed a rigorous meditation at this place. The meditation was so intense that he didn’t care about the weather conditions. To protect him from the scorching heat, Goddess Lakshmi took the shape of a Badri tree and spread over him. Lord Vishnu was so pleased by Goddess Lakshmi's devotion that he named the spot as Badrikashram. The black lingam stone in the temple was founded in the 8th century by Shri Adi Shankaracharya. After a few years, the lingam was enshrined in a cave, and later the Raja of Garhwal installed the deity by building a temple. It is said that visiting Badrinath can absolve all the sins of pilgrims. Another best part about Badrinath is that no trekking is required to reach the temple.

Immerse yourself in the divine powers of ancient temples on this Chardham Yatra 2024 by opting for packages with MakeMyTrip. Whether you're looking for Chardham Yatra by helicopter or planning to take strenuous treks, you will find a range of great value Chardham yatra package at MakeMyTrip.

Encircled by the three giant peaks, this is the place where Alaknanda meets Bhagirathi and attains the form of Ganga. Some legends even consider Devprayag as the starting point of the Panch Prayag Yatra. On a visit to this town, you can add an excursion to Sangam, Raghunath Ji Temple, Dhaneshwar Mahadev temple, Chandrabadni temple, and Mata Bhuvneshwari temple.

Located on the bank of the Ganga River, the historic town of Srinagar, a prominent place to visit on your Char Dham tour, is known for its natural beauty and prominent temples. Kamleshwar Mahadev, dedicated to Lord Shiva, is the main shrine of Srinagar. The temple is known for performing special puja for childless couples. Established by Adi Shankaracharya, Kilkileshwar Mahadev, situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River, is a must-visit too.

Rudraprayag

The place where Gods, legends and rivers meet, Rudraprayag marks the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers. Encircled by emerald lakes, glaciers, and silver streams, the town is named after the Rudra avatar of Lord Shiva. One of the Panch Prayag (five confluences of Alaknanda River), Rudraprayag is the base point of the famous Badrinath and Kedarnath Yatra. Seek blessings at the Jagdamba Temple and Shiva Temple and feel the divine aura on a visit to the Koteshwar Mahadev temple in Srinagar.

Joshimath, also Jyotirmath, is home to Vasudeva temple where the idol of Lord Badrinath is brought down during the winter season. An important pilgrimage centre in the country, Joshimath remains crowded with devotees for seeking blessings at the 8th century Jyotirmath or the Shri Shankaracharya monastery. It is one of the four monasteries that were established by Adi Guru Shankaracharya in the 8th century AD. Do take out some time to visit Kalpavriksha, which is believed to be 1200 years old.

Chopta, also known as the Mini Switzerland of Uttarakhand, is a divine destination for trekkers. This hushed abode looks spectacular, especially during the morning hours when the crimson rays of the sun kiss Nanda Devi and Chaukhamba peak. Kedarnath Wildlife Sanctuary, which is also a part of Chopta, is a sight to behold, owing to its rich flora and fauna, including Musk Deer and various species of birds. Chopta looks spectacular, especially during April and May, as the rhododendron trees are blooming during this time of the year.

A small town on the confluence of the Alaknanda and Nandakini Rivers, Nandprayag was once the capital of the Yadu kingdom. It is believed that Raja Nanda performed Yagna on a stone here, which was later used as the foundation for the Nand Temple. Apart from seeking blessings at the various religious sites in the town, you could hike to Bangali and learn about the intriguing culture of this tiny hamlet.

Stunning hilly terrains, ancient temples and chattering rivers of Uttarkashi can sweep travellers off their feet. A paradise for nature lovers, Uttarkashi is also known for its Nehru Mountaineering Institute and Vishwanath Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Apart from temples, Uttarkashi is known for Dayara Bugyal, a meadow with an awe-inspiring view of the Himalayas. The place often remains crowded with adventure junkies as various activities like trekking and rock climbing take place in Uttarkashi.

Located at an altitude of 2620 meters on the banks of Bhagirathi River, Harsil in Uttarkashi is a quaint hamlet mainly known for its adventure activities. One of the offbeat places to visit in Uttarakhand, Harsil mesmerizes with its panoramic view of snow-capped mountains, which is perhaps the reason why it is quite famous amongst the trekkers. Dharali, Mukhwas and Sattal are some of the prominent places to visit in Harsil that you can add in your  Chardham Yatra package.

Mukhba Village

A small village in the town of Harsil, Mukhba Village is located on the banks of river Bhagirathi at an altitude of 2620 meters. The village is known for the fact that the idol of the goddess Ganga is brought here from the shrine of Gangotri in the Upper Himalayas due to heavy snow. There are two temples of Goddess Ganga in Mukhba Village and both are a must-visit. The enchanting valley also offers a gorgeous view of snow-capped peaks like Hindyani, Jaonli, and Sumeru.

During the winter season, the idol of Lord Kedarnath shifts to the Omkareshwar Temple in Ukhimath as the main temple remains closed during the winter season. A prominent religious centre, Ukhimath is also home to various temples dedicated to Lord Shiva, Goddess Parvati, Mandhata, and Aniruddha. From here, you can plan a visit to the offbeat destinations like Chopta, Tungnath, and Madmaheshwar.

A must visit during the Chardham Yatra, Guptkashi, apart from its beautiful local location, is known for Manikarnika Kund where two streams of the Ganga and Yamuna meet. It is said that the original Shivling of Kashi Vishwanath Temple was kept at this place during the Mughal era to keep it safe from Aurangzeb. The holy town of Guptkashi is home to prominent temples. Vishwanath temple and Ardhnarishwar temple are some of the most famous temples in Guptkashi. If you’re opting for a Chardham Yatra by helicopter, then you will have to reach Guptkashi helipad for your flight to the temple.

Holding a captivating appeal, Sonprayag, located at an altitude of 1829 meters, marks the convergence of two majestic rivers, Mandakini and Basuki. Bounded by lofty snow-clad peaks, the place offers a scintillating view of snow-capped mountains and meadows. The prominent temple of Triyuginarayan in Triyugi village is also situated near Sonprayag. According to legends, Triyuginarayan is the same place where the wedding of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati took place.

Marking the point from where the toughest trek to Kedarnath commences, Gaurikund is a famous pilgrimage destination on the way to Kedarnath Temple. As per the 6th-7th century Nayanars saints, Gauri Kund holds a strong association with Shiva's wife Parvati, who is also known as Gauri in some parts of India. It is believed to be the same place where Goddess Parvati had done penance to win Lord Shiva's heart. That's when Lord Shiva agreed to marry Goddess Parvati. Gaurikund Temple and Gauri Kund Lake are some of the prominent places to visit in Gaurikund.

Temples to visit on Char Dham Tour

Yamunotri temple, uttarkashi.

Dedicated to Goddess Yamuna, Yamunotri Temple is located at an altitude of 3923 meters near the foot of Kalind Parbat (peak). It is the first temple that travellers visit on the Char Dham circuit. According to legends, the temple was the home of Asti Muni, an ancient sage, which makes it extremely popular amongst Hindu devotees. The main sanctum of the temple houses a black marble idol of Yamuna along with a white stone representing River Ganga. As the Yama Dwitiya (second day after Diwali or on Bhai Dooj) approaches, the temple closes its portals, and the temple authorities shift the idol to Kharsali village for the winter season. The idol is brought back to the main temple on the auspicious occasion of Akshaya Tritiya (occurring in April/May), marking a grand celebration by devotees.

Gaumukh Glacier, around 18 kilometres away from the temple, is the point where the River Ganges originates. It is believed that taking a bath in the freezing water of Gaumukh Glacier can relieve one from all the sins. The main sanctum of the temple (also known as Garbha Griha) houses the idol of Lord Shiva along with Lord Krishna, Pandavas, Draupadi, and Kunti. Right outside the shrine, there's a large stone statue of Nandi Bull, protecting the temple. On the 1st day of Karthik month (October/November), the main idol is shifted to Omkareshwar temple in Ukhimath (Rudraprayag district) and then welcomed back in the Vaisakh (April/May) month of Hindu calendar.

Apart from its natural beauty, the village is known for its handcrafted woollen shawls and blankets, local herbs, etc. It is also believed that the Pandavas crossed the Mana village en route their journey to heaven. Apart from Mana Village, you can add a visit to Mukhwas Village, mainly known for being the winter abode of Goddess Gangotri .

Visit Vyas Gufa

Situated in Mana Village, Vyas Cave is a must-visit attraction in Uttarakhand. Just a few kilometres away from Badrinath, Vyas Cave is believed to be the same place where sage Vyas with Lord Ganesha composed the Mahabharata epic. Considering its spiritual significance, you should add a visit to Vyas Cave in your Char Dham holiday.

Attend Ganga Aarti at Triveni Ghat

On your Chardham Yatra, make it a point to attend the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti - sunset prayer accompanied by music on the banks of the holy river. During the evening aarti, the ghat becomes a sight for sore eyes, with bells ringing and diyas flaming everywhere. Triveni Ghat is also one of the holy bathing places where pilgrims come to cleanse themselves in the pious water of River Ganga. It is believed that taking a bath here can relieve one from all ailments.

Visit Charan Paduka

Located at an altitude of 1030 meters on Narayan Parvat, Charan Paduka is a boulder with the imprints of Lord Vishnu's feet. It is believed that Lord Vishnu set his divine foot at this place when he came to earth from Vaikunth (celestial abode of the lord). The boulder is around 3 km away from Badrinath Temple. While here, you can undertake a short uphill trek and visit a meadow filled with colourful flowers.

Explore Haridwar

Literally meaning the 'Abode of God,' Haridwar is a beautiful spiritual destination where the mighty Ganga emerges from the Himalayas. During your Char dham Yatra , you could spend a day at Haridwar and explore its famous temples. Visit the Bharat Mata Temple, an ancient temple located on the bank of River Ganga. You could also seek blessings at Mansa Devi Temple sacred to Goddess Mansa Devi. In the evening, make it a point to attend the mesmerizing Ganga Aarti - a sunset prayer accompanied by spiritual music on the banks of the holy river.

Frequently Asked Questions About Chardham Yatra Package

Ques. how long does the chardham tour package take.

Ans. A Chardham tour package can be for 4-6 days if you are journeying by helicopter. At the same time, it does require a minimum of 10-12 days if you are planning to complete the Chardham Yatra by road. And, if you have some time in hand, then there are many other landmarks including the Tapovan, Gaumukh, Auli, Chopta, Vasuki Tal, Bhauravnath Temple, Chopta and Hemkund Sahib that you can include in your itinerary.

Ques. From where does the Chardham tour start?

Ans. All Chardham tour packages usually begin from Haridwar. You can either fly to Dehradun and then go to Haridwar or reach the holy city directly by train or car. Thereafter, you have to travel to Yamunotri from Haridwar, which is around 6-7 hours drive by road. Your tour may also start from Dehradun if you choose to travel by helicopter to the Dhams.

Ques. Which are the Char Dhams in India?

Ans. The Char Dhams in the country are spread in four directions. The term was coined by Sri Adi Shankaracharya. These are Badrinath and Rameswaram in the north and south along with Puri and Dwarka in the east and west respectively. However, the Char Dhams or temples in the Himalayas are the following: • Yamunotri • Gangotri • Kedarnath • Badrinath

Ques. How should I complete the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. You should complete the Chardham Yatra in clockwise direction. This means reaching Haridwar first, before visiting Yamunotri. You can then go to Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath. This should be an ideal way to complete the Chardham Yatra package. The pilgrimage sites encompass 1,607 kms in total. If you are going for a helicopter tour, then you can easily complete the pilgrimage in a week. Here is a sample itinerary: • Day 1- Reach Dehradun • Day 2- Dehradun-Kharsali-Yamunotri-Kharsali • Day 3- Kharsali-Harsil-Gangotri-Harsil • Day 4- Harsil-Sersi-Kedarnath-Sersi • Day 5- Sersi-Badrinath • Day 6- Return to Dehradun and then take your flight back home

Ques. Which Dham should I visit first?

Ans. If you are planning a chardham yatra package from Hyderabad , Bangalore, Delhi or any other city like Haridwar/Dehradun, you should know which Dham to visit first. Pilgrims believe that one should complete the hallowed Chardham Yatra in the clockwise direction. How does this work? The tour should begin from Yamunotri and then move to Gangotri, followed by Kedarnath and finally Badrinath. Getting to Haridwar will be a good way to start the Yatra in this manner. You can fly to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun via Delhi and then take a cab to reach Haridwar which is just 235 kms away.

Ques. Is there any age limit for the Chardham Yatra?

Ans. The rules and regulations of the Chardham Yatra are governed by the temple committees and official authorities. Whether you are planning a Chardham tour package by helicopter or by road, there is no official age limit for the pilgrimage. However, the e-pass guidelines of the committee mentions that children below the age of 10 years should avoid the pilgrimage. Similarly, the advisory also mentions that those who are above the age of 65 should avoid going on the Chardham Yatra. Women who are pregnant are also advised to skip the pilgrimage due to the higher altitude, weather conditions and other risks.

Ques. Which is the best month to go on a Char Dham Yatra?

All the four Dhams or temples (Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath) remain open only for half of the year. This is usually between April/May to October/November. The final dates are confirmed thereafter on the auspicious occasion of Maha Shivaratri by the Mandir Samiti. They are usually fixed by the priest of the famous Bhimashankar Linga Temple. Since the temples are positioned at higher altitudes, there is massive snowfall in the winter, making the committee close them in this period. Hence, you should plan your Chardham Yatra tour package in the stretch from April or May to October or November, as mentioned. Every winter, the Kedarnath Temple gates stay closed, while the idol is moved to the Ukhimath-based Omkareshwar Temple. The idols of the other Dhams are moved to and worshipped at the Shani Dev Temple in Kharsali, Mukhimath Temple in Mukba and the Vasu Dev Temple in Joshimath in the winter months.

Ques. Which is the nearest airport to the Char Dham pilgrimage?

Ans. While booking a Chardham Yatra package, you must also have an idea about the nearest airports for your journey. All the four Dhams are nearest to the Jolly Grant Airport in Dehradun. It is only 55 kilometres away from Haridwar, while direct flights are also available between Delhi and Dehradun, for those coming from the national capital. Those booking chardham yatra packages from Bangalore or other cities will have to fly to Delhi and then take a connecting flight to Dehradun. Dehradun is only 109 kms away from Kedarnath and 146 kms away from Badrinath. Yamunotri and Gangotri are approximately 210 and 114 kms away from Dehradun respectively.

Ques. Can I take the Chardham Yatra by helicopter?

Ans. You can choose a Chardham helicopter package online. This will help you explore the pilgrimage sites without any hassle. You will not have to take the arduous treks, which may be excessively challenging for you. If you already have physical ailments or injuries, then helicopter tours are strongly recommended. Prices for a Chardham tour by helicopter may vary, costing around ₹ 1,39,090 for a 3 nights and 4 days package, covering Guptkashi, Dehradun and Badrinath. A package for 5 nights and 6 days will cost you approximately ₹ 2,13,349 per head. At the same time, this will cover Dehradun, Badrinath, Yamunotri, Guptkashi and Harsil. There are multiple such customisable packages that you can opt for, depending on your specific requirements and budget.

Ques. What is the approximate Chardham route map?

Ans. There are varying Chardham Yatra package options available online, depending on your needs. You may take your pick from several routes for accessing the Char Dhams. You can book a char dham yatra package from Haridwar or even a chardham package from Delhi . Many also opt for a chardham tour package from Dehradun . The Gangotri and Badrinath Dhams can be accessed from Haridwar, Dehradun, Kotdwar and Rishikesh. Yamunotri requires a trek from Janki Chatti which is roughly 210 kms away from Rishikesh. For Kedarnath, the trek begins from Gaurikund which is 93 kms away from Rishikesh. The sites of pilgrimage encompass 1,670 kms, beginning from Haridwar and concluding at Rishikesh. Here is a sample itinerary that you can check out: • Haridwar to Barkot- Day 1 • Barkot to Yamunotri- Day 2 • Barkot to Uttarkashi-Day 3 • Uttarkashi to Gangotri-Day 4 • Uttarkashi to Rudraprayag-Day 5 • Rudraprayag to Kedarnath- Day 6 • Rudraprayag to Badrinath-Day 7 • Badrinath to Rishikesh-Day 8 • Departure from Rishikesh- Day 9

Ans. Chardham tour packages may be booked in 2023, since the Government has now allowed tourists to embark on the pilgrimage. All tourists who are vaccinated will have permission to go on the Chardham Yatra from the 14th May 2023.

Ques. What is the cost of a Chardham Yatra package?

Ans. A Chardham Yatra package can be booked at reasonable prices online. You will find several options suited to diverse needs. For instance, a package for 11 nights and 12 days will cost you around ₹ 50,856. This covers Uttarkashi, Haridwar, Guptkashi, Barot, Kedarnath, Badrinath, Rudraprayag and Rishikesh. There are many other Chardham tour package options available and you can also customise your preferred itinerary easily.

Uttarakhand Char Dham Yatra Essential Guide

Pilgrimage to Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath and Badrinath Temples

chardham tour

After the snow clears at the foothills of the Himalayas in late April, Hindu pilgrims start flocking to the four ancient temples known as Char Dham. Located high up in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand , these temples mark the spiritual source of four holy rivers: the Yamuna (at Yamunotri), the Ganges (at Gangotri), the Mandakini (at Kedarnath), and the Alaknanda (at Badrinath). Hindus consider visiting the Char Dham to be very auspicious. Not only is it believed to wash away all sins, it will also ensure release from the cycle of birth and death. There are a number of options for going on a Char Dham yatra (journey).

Char Dham Yatra Overview

The Char Dham are only open at certain times of the year from late April or early May to November. May and June is the peak pilgrimage period. The monsoon season (July to September) can quite dangerous as the rain makes the route slippery.

How Can the Char Dham be Reached?

A Char Dham yatra isn't easy. Pilgrims really need to earn the benefits bestowed, as only two of the temples (Badrinath and Gangotri) are accessible by vehicle. The remaining two (Yamunotri and Kedarnath) require treks. Kedarnath has the lengthiest trek. It takes around 10-12 days to visit all the temples. However, it's now possible to cover all the temples in two days by helicopter.

To help ensure the safety of pilgrims, a medical checkup has been introduced for those trekking to Kedarnath temple. Special checkup points are provided en-route for this. In addition, all pilgrims going on the Char Dham Yatra must complete biometric registration. It can be done online here or at designated registration centers in Uttarakhand. There will be regular weather updates provided along the route, as well as telecommunication network coverage, mobile medical facilities, and a control room.

Where are the Char Dham Located?

  • Badrinath and Gangotri -- are both directly reachable by road from Haridwar , Rishikesh , Kotdwar, and Dehradun.
  • Yamunotri -- the trek starts from Janki Chatti, 225 kilometers (140 miles) from Rishikesh .
  • Kedarnath -- the trek starts from Gaurikund, 207 kilometers (130 miles) from Rishikesh .

Are there any Tour Packages?

Although it's not difficult to make your own travel arrangements for a Char Dham yatra, there are plenty of Char Dham packages available as well. Two options are:

  • Government-operated Garhwal Mandal Vikas Nigam organizes package tours by bus every year from May to November. There are plenty of options from seeing only one temple to all four temples. It's possible to include the Valley of Flowers and Hemkund Sahib too. Most tours depart from Rishikesh but some leave from Haridwar or Dehradun, depending on the itinerary. The shortest tour is four nights and the longest is 11. Tours are priced from around 10,000 rupees per person. Some have shared accommodations and bathroom.
  • If you'd prefer a more upmarket option, Leisure Hotels has set up luxury Chardham Camps at each of the sites and offers various package deals .
  • Pilgrim Aviation is a reputable private company that offers helicopter tour packages.

Prefer to Go Your Own Way and Want More Information?

The temples are usually visited in clockwork direction, from west to east. This means you should see them in the following order: Yamunotri, Gangotri, Kedarnath, Badrinath. Haridwar or Rishikesh are the starting points for transportation.

What is the Situation After the 2013 Flood At Kedarnath?

Substantial repair and reconstruction works have been carried after the flash flood in Uttarakhand, which caused extensive devastation and loss of life in the area around Kedarnath temple. This has made the trek much safer and more comfortable for pilgrims.

Nehru Institute of Mountaineering has repaired the damaged stretch of track from Gaurikund to Rambara and made a new track from Rambara to Kedarnath. In addition, accommodation and sanitation facilities have been improved. There are resting points, toilets, tea stalls, medical facilities, police stations, and State Disaster Response Force patrols on the route. Emergency helipads have been constructed in various locations, and an early warning alarm system has been installed to provide alerts about any disasters on the route and around the lake there.

How to Visit Badrinath Temple

Badrinath temple is the most accessible and thus most popular of the Char Dham. You'll find this temple, dedicated to Lord Vishnu, surrounded by a rather untidy village and overshadowed by the towering, snow-topped, Nilkantha peak.

When is Badrinath Temple Open?

The opening date is decided by priests on Basant Panchami in February, while the closing date is decided on  Dussehra . Generally, the temple remains open for around 10 days after Diwali . The opening date for 2021 has been announced as May 18.

How Can Badrinath Temple be Reached?

Read more about Badrinath temple and how to visit it in this complete guide.

How to Visit Gangotri Temple

The simple shrine of Gangotri temple has special significance for Hindu pilgrims. It's considered to be one of the holiest places in India as it's regarded as the spiritual source of the ever powerful Ganges River. Set amidst rugged mountains and forest, Gangotri attracts almost 300,000 pilgrims a year. Every evening towards 8 p.m., an aarti (worship with fire) is held at the temple.

When is Gangotri Temple Open?

Gangotri temple opens on a set day every year. This falls on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar), in the last week of April or first week of May.  In 2021, Gangotri will open on May 14. The occasion features a traditional procession of the Goddess Ganga back from her winter home at Mukhyamath temple in Mukhba village, 20 kilometers (12 miles) downstream. The temple closes on Diwali every year, and the Goddess returned to Mukhyamath temple.

How Can Gangotri Temple be Reached?

Gangotri is most popularly reached from Rishikesh (12 hours away) via Uttarkashi (six hours away). It's possible to take a bus or jeep to get there. Guesthouses and a GMVN Tourist Bungalow provide accommodations for those who want to stay.

Trekking to the Actual Source of the Ganges River

If you don't mind a strenuous trek, you can actually go to where the Ganges River emerges from a glacier above Gangotri. The actual source is an ice cave called Gaumukh (meaning Cow's Mouth), 18 kilometers (11 miles) up. Three days are required to complete the return trek, with around six hours of trekking a day. You can stay in a dormitory at a GMVN Tourist Bungalow along the way at Bhojbasa. It's situated around six hours from Gangotri and three hours from Gaumukh.

How to Visit Yamunotri Temple

The Yamunotri temple lies close to the source of the Yamuna River, the second holiest river in India, which flows all the way down past the Taj Mahal . The temple is relatively undeveloped as it's the least visited of the Char Dham. However, there is a certain magic to be experienced from the pristine mountain air, running water, natural scenic beauty, and enthusiastic devotees. Pilgrims also get to enjoy a number of hot water springs in the vicinity of the temple.

When is Yamunotri Temple Open?

The same as Gangotri temple, Yamunotri temple opens every year on Akshaya Tritiya (an auspicious day in the Hindu calendar). It falls in the last week of April or first week of May. In 2021, it is on May 14. The temple also closes for the season on Diwali. On the day the temple opens, the Goddess is carried from the nearby village of Kharsali (said to be Yamuna's mother's home), installed in the temple, and duly returned when the temple closes.

How Can Yamunotri Temple be Reached?

The route by road is Haridwar/Rishikesh-Dehradun-Mussoorie-Naugaon-Barkot–Hanuman Chatti. The journey to the village of Hanuman Chatti, which is around 14 kilometers from the Yamunotri temple, takes around eight hours from Rishikesh and six hours from the hill station of Mussoorie . From there, it's necessary to take a shared taxi (departures every few minutes) to Janki Chatti. Your trek starts there! It's only 5 kilometers (3 miles) to the Yamunotri temple, via Kharsali, but it's a very steep and and in some parts narrow climb. As a result, people usually take around two hours to cover the distance and it really helps if you take a locally available walking stick. If you find you don't want to walk, there are mules and men to help carry you.

Basic guesthouses and GMVN Tourist Bungalows provide accommodations at Yamunotri, Janki Chatti, and Hanuman Chatti. If you stay the night at Yamunotri, you'll be able to witness the evening aarti (worship with fire) there.

Is it Possible to See the Actual Source of the Yamuna River?

The origin of the Yamuna River is a frozen lake and glacier located around a kilometer above the temple. Unless you have mountaineering skills, the climb isn't advised though. It's a very difficult one.

How to Visit Kedarnath Temple

The most remote and holiest of the Char Dham, although Kedarnath temple requires effort to get to, it still draws more than 100,000 pilgrims a year. This is because it's considered to be the seat of Lord Shiva and the most important of the 12 Jyotirlingas (large lingas /shrines to Shiva) in India. It's an impressive temple too -- perhaps the largest and most magnificent one in the Himalayas. Situated high up in Lord Shiva's territory, it occupies a glacial terrace leftover from a long ago melted glacier, in the Mandakini Valley.

When is Kedarnath Temple Open?

The opening date is decided by priests on Maha Shivaratri in late February or early March each year. In 2021, it will open on May 17. The temple closes the day after Diwali each year.

How Can Kedarnath Temple be Reached?

The route to Kedarnath starts off at Rishikesh and heads in the same direction as to Badrinath, but branches off at Rudraprayag (where connections are available). The destination is Gaurikund, 14 kilometers (9 miles) from Kedarnath. The whole journey from Rishikesh takes around 12 hours by bus or jeep. Then, from Gaurikund, it's a grueling uphill trek to the temple. Expect it to take around six hours. The stunning scenery of the Mandakini River along the way helps though! Those who don't feel up to walking can opt to take a pony, which will reduce the duration of the trek by an hour. There are porters available to help carry luggage as well.

Alternatively, Kedranath temple is also accessible by helicopter! The Uttarakhand government provides services departing from various locations and online bookings can be made here . Other options are Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (owned by the Indian government) and private company Pilgrim Aviation . A one way trip only takes 15 minutes.

Where to Stay?

In terms of accommodations, basic GMVN Tourist Bungalows can be found at Gaurikund. Following the devastating 2013 flash flood, which destroyed infrastructure around the temple, the government has constructed tent colonies to accommodate pilgrims. New sanitation facilities, including toilets and bathrooms, have been added along with community kitchens.

Given the stunning beauty, the Himalayan charm, dense forests, large valleys and epic nature all around – Char Dham Yatra makes for the most majestic of journeys to partake in.

Gangotri, Yamunotri and Kedarnath Closed for Winters

Let's quickly dive into the details:

About Char Dham Yatra

As a brief, Kedarnath is devoted to Lord Shiva while Badrinath is devoted to Lord Vishnu. Yamunotri and Gangotri are dedicated to Goddesses Ganga and Yamuna rivers respectively.

Char Dham Yatra of Uttarakhand can be covered in one go, taking about 10-15 days (depending on your schedule). In fact, you may also get helicopter services to cover Char Dham in a matter of two days.

History of Char Dham

The Great Reformer and Philosopher, Adi Shankaracharya, gathered together these Holy Pilgrimage places into a spiritual circuit around the 8th century. Generation followed generations and hundreds of thousands of devotees have kept up the tradition of covering these pilgrimage spots every year.

However, it should be noted that during Winter season all Char dham are closed for Six month due to Heavy snowfall all temples are inaccessible. The Gods and Goddesses are moved to their “Winter abodes” during this time.

Opening and Closing Dates of the Yatra

Usually, the period for partaking in this Yatra is from April End – October End. However, each year the Uttarakhand Government announces the dates of the opening and closing of the circuit. In the winter times, the 4 shrines are moved to their winter sojourns.

Namely, Ukhimath, Joshimath, Mukhba and Kharsali for the deities of Kedarnath, Badrinath , Gangotri and Yamunotri respectively. The gates to all these winter Dhams remain open for devotees – thus, technically you may visit the shrines all year long (albeit not in the same locations)

Badrinath closed for winters 2011

How to get there

In order to embark upon the Chota Char Dham Yatra, you’ll need to reach Haridwar. Here’s how.

Jolly Grant Airport, Dehradun is the nearest airport. In fact, from here, you may even take up a Helicopter service to Kedarnath and Badrinath. These are available from Delhi, Dehradun, Phata, Augustmuni and Gauchar near Rudraprayag and Dehradun.

Rishikesh, Haridwar, Kotdwar and Dehradun are well connected to major cities of India by Railway Network. From here you can get bus or you can hire taxi as well towards your onwards journey.

Gangotri and Yamunotri Closed for Winters 2011-12

Char Dham Yatra Route

As per the Hindu Mythology, the auspicious and ever-so-important Yatra should be undertaken from west to east, in order to cover the holy places in a clockwise manner. Thus, it means that you should start off your pilgrimage from Yamunotri, then proceed to Gangotri, Kedarnath and finish your journey at Badrinath.

About the Char Dham Yatra

While the journey is a beautiful one, I want to highlight the importance of each of the shrines.

Yamunotri Dham

The original source of Yamuna River, Yamunotri is surrounded by stunning high forested peaks and a large valley. Yamuna is known to be the second largest and one of the holiest river in India after Ganga. As per the Hindu mythology, it is believed that Yamuna is the daughter of Surya (God of Son) & the sister of Yama (God of Death).

It is believed that you will be washed of your sins when you visit Yamunotri. Given the tough journey, faith, and transcendent significance of the river motivates the pilgrims to their destination. Distinctive features of Yamunotri include hot springs where raw rice is cooked and turned into prasad. Also, there many holy shrines, ashrams and temples in and around the Dham.

Yamunotri is located at an altitude of 3293 mts, in the Garhwal region and situated about 40 km away from Barkot in Uttarkashi. While the actual source of Yamuna lies in the Yamunotri Glacier, at an elevation of 6,387 mts near Bandarpunch Peaks.

Other places of interest nearby include Surya Kund, Divya Shila, Janki Chatti, Hanuman Chatti, Saptarishi Kund Lake etc.

History and Importance of Yamunotri

The temple at Yamunotri is dedicated to goddess Yamuna. It should be noted that the main Deity of the temple is made up of Black marble. Built by Maharani Gularia of Jaipur in the 19th century, the current temple was created after the previous one was destroyed by climate activity.

The Yamunotri Shrine was originally constructed by Maharaja Pratap Shah of Tehri Garhwal on left seashore of Yamuna River.

Gangotri Dham

Unarguably the most important river for Hindus, Ganga is the most sacred river in the world. Gangotri is one of the origin sources of Ganga (Ganges). It should be noted here that the foremost source of the river is “Gaumukh” – a glacier located 19 km from the Gangotri temple.

Gangotri is located on the banks of Bhagirathi river at an altitude of 3100 mts. Gangotri is the starting point of Ganga. It should be noted that the river Bhagirathi attains the name Ganga from Devprayag. This is where Bhagirathi meets with Alaknanda to form Ganga.

Gangotri Temple Inside

The temple opens on the auspicious day of Akshay Tritiya (usually in the month of May) and closes down on Yama Dwitiya or Bhai Duj (usually falling in October/ November).

Ganga water is the purest form of blessing and is used in Poojas (prayers) or offering in temples. In fact, pilgrims carry the auspicious water from here as a way to carry Prasad and blessings for future prayers.

Gangotri is the home place of many varieties of flora and fauna. There are several temples in Gangotri where visitors can learn the history behind the creation of Ganga River.

History and Importance of Gangotri Temple

As per Hindu Mythology, Ganga was born as a result of prize given Shivji to king Bhagirath for his penance. However, owing to her superiority as well as the fact that Earth would be overwhelmed if Ganga came down in full force, Shivji caught her in his locks.

There is a sacred stone near the Gangotri temple that denotes the place where Ganga first came down to earth in the river form. This is why Ganga is also called by the name of Bhagirathi (i.e. the daughter of Bhagirath).

The Gangotri temple in its present form was constructed by Gorkha Commander Amar Singh Thapa in the 18th Century. It is believed that at the time of construction of the current temple, the Gaumukh glacier was present here – however it has receded to its current location due to global warming and climate change.

Kedarnath Dham

One of the most sacred pilgrimages in India, Kedarnath temple is located on the bank of Mandakini river at an altitude of 3584 mts. Historically, this region was known as “Kedar Khand”. Kedarnath temple is one of the 12 Jyotirlingas of Shivji in India.

Flanked by breathtaking snow-capped peaks, Kedarnath is the most remote locations on the Char Dham Yatra. The town itself is stunningly beautiful and the scenic beauty tends to attract a lot of pilgrims, with huge crowds flocking the region in the summer months of May and June. Also, the Kedarnath trek is quite famous amongst the trekker tribe.

It should be mentioned here that the 2013 floods did huge damage to the region. In fact, the fact that the temple is still standing has been the source of massive reverence. Prior to the 2013 floods, Gaurikund was the last destination on Kedarnath route, but with the floods in 2013, a new trekking route is under process.

This route will be approximately 21 kms of trekking, which will either start from Sonprayag or Sitapur. As of now, helicopter is the best way to reach Kedarnath temple.

Char Dham Yatra 2011 Begins

Currently, only accommodation near the dham are campsites due to the excessive damage from the floods.

In terms of thingy to do nearby, you may visit Chorabari tal (Gandhi Sarovar), Vasukital, Gaurikund, Trijuginarayan, Ukhimath, Panch Kedar, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath, Chopta, DeoriaTal and Rudranath etc.

History and Importance of Kedarnath Temple

Dedicated to incarnations of Shivji, Kedarnath is named after King Kedar, a ruler from Satya Yuga. This is the place where Shivji is said to have absolved the Pandavas from killing their own cousins Kauravas in the Mahabharata.

In fact, there is an interesting story behind the town and its temple. According to the Puranas, the Pandava brothers did a major penance in Kedarnath to please Shivji.

Earlier the temple was built by Pandavas and Present temple was built by Adi Shankaracharya. Just Behind the temple you will see samadhi of Adi Shankaracharya.

Badrinath Dham

Badrinath is an important holy shrine for Vaishnavites and is one of the 108 divya desams incarnation of Vishnuji. Also, Badrinath the town is part of Panch Badri temples which include Yog Dhyan Badri, Bhavishya Badri, Adi Badri and Vriddha Badri, along with Badrinath temple.

And, Badrinath is situated at an altitude of about 3415 mts in the Chamoli District of Uttarakhand. Located in Silent valley of Garhwal, Badrinath lies on the shores of Alaknanda river. The town is known for its stunning beauty, pleasant weather, thick forest cover as well as the beautiful views of snow clad mountains along the holy river flowing through the surrounding green valley.

Badrinath is the home to many celebrations including Kedar-Badri Utsav, Janam-ashtami, Mata Mruti Ka Mela. Nearby places that should be visited include Panch Prayag temple, Badhri Naryanan Temple, Vasudhara Falls, Hot Geyser (tapt kunds or hot water springs), Bheem Pul, Mana Village etc.

Badrinath

History & Importance of Badrinath Temple

The original Badrinath temple was built Adi Shankaracharya, who initially discovered the Badrinarayan idol in the Alakananda River. It was he who moved the shrine into the hot water springs of Tapt Kund. Due to natural time taking course, there was a need for a new temple to be built.

The Present temple was built by King of Garhwal in 16th century. The stunning ornament stones, traditional carving, pillar designs will take your breath away at the first look! In terms of the architecture, the appearance is similar to the Buddhist Vihara temple.

In the Satya yuga, Shivji meditated here for thousands of years while Goddess Lakshmi provided shadow over her husband in the form of a Badri tree. So, this is how the place for its name for Badrinath!

In fact, the entire valley surrounding Kedar-Badri was said to be the home of Shivji. This is the reason Badrinath becomes a main-stay around Mahashivratri when the festival is celebrated with full pomp-and-circumstance.

Itinerary for the Chota Char Dham Yatra

Day 1: delhi to haridwar.

Start your journey towards Haridwar from Delhi, covering 210 KMs in 6 hours’ worth of driving time. I would suggest reaching Haridwar as early as possible. This will leave you ample time to explore one of the holiest places in India – the gateway to the God and one of the oldest living world cities.

One of the MUST DO things (apart from exploring the many lanes and paths of the city) includes the magic of the evening Aarati (worship with fire) wherein all lamps are lit and prayers are offered at the Har ki Pauri (Steps of God). For Hindus, a dip in the auspicious Ganges leads to a washing off of all sins and a source of attaining liberation from the endless cycle of death and rebirth.

Day 2: Haridwar to Barkot

Start your day off as early as possible and after a dip in Ganga, you start your journey towards the first dham – Yamunotri – daughter of Surya & sister of Yam. Today’s travel towards Barkot will take you about 10 hours, covering 200 KMs.

Barkot is situated at an elevation of 1220 mts. Do remember to explore the little hamlet, even though the journey of your day today would be quite long. Modern civilization has not quite touched the place and you’ll be drawn in by the rituals and the ways of the city.

The surrounding views are insanely mesmerizing and include peaks of Bandar Punch that are snow-capped throughout the year. I suggest this as an overnight stop on your way to Yamunotri to keep you fresh and feeling alive throughout the journey! The views will forever be embedded in your memories, trust me.

Day 3: Barkot / Yamunotri/ Barkot

After an early breakfast, you’ll start your journey towards the first dham in earnest. With 36 KMs of driving along with a 7 KM trek, you’ll reach Yamunotri in around 5 hours today. If you plan on hiring a horse or a Doli, that will cost you anywhere from INR 1000 – 2500.

However, do note these rates may vary depending on when in season you visit and the number of tourists at that particular time.

Stunning Beauty of Uttarakhand

Yamunotri was the home of sage, Asit Muni. Yamuna is the daughter of the Surya (God of Sun) and Sarayyu. Her brother is Yama (God of Death). It is believed that Yama would not torment any individual at the time of death who bathes in Yamuna, his sister. It is Yamuna, holder of infinite love and compassion, who can grant us freedom from even death, in the realm of her elder brother.

After having visited the shrine and nearby places, you’ll return to Barkot for your onward journey.

Day 4: Barkot / Gangotri

This day begins with an early morning as well. If you’re not completely fit – you might feel fatigued from the previous day’s journey. Hence, I do recommend you get to bed early to get full night’s rest for your day today!

Today’ you’ll be covering 210 KMs in about 9 hours’ worth of driving time. Do remember to take breaks. I particularly recommend stopping over at Gangnani – a hot water spring enroute. If you learn by 6 AM, you should hope to arrive at Gangotri by 3:30 PM.

Today is the day you visit your 2nd Dham, Gangotri, the origin of Ganga and seat of the goddess Ganga. The origin of the holy river is at Gaumukh, set in the Gangotri Glacier, and is a 19 km trek from Gangotri.

According to Hindu mythology, Goddess Ganga took the form of a river to absolve the sins of King Bhagirath’s predecessors, following his severe penance to Shivji spanning several centuries.

There is no other river as closely associated with Hinduism as Ganga. Respected since time immemorial as THE spiritual purifier, giver of health and prosperity – Ganga is part of the country’s religious fabric.

Visiting Gangotri is truly among the most blessed experiences of a Hindu’s life; and as uplifting and inspiring for any traveler.

Day 5 – Gangotri /Uttarkashi

Today, you may start your journey relatively leisurely. Waking up in Gangotri is an experience unto itself and should be treated as such. There are not many places where you feel peace quite like you’d here!

Today, after taking in the experience as much as you can – you start your journey towards Uttarkashi. Uttarkashi literally translates to the Banaras (i.e. Kashi) of the North. Today’s journey will take you 4 hours to cover 95 KMs.

Dayara Bugyal in Uttarkashi. Picture courtesy, Ravish Chugh

Uttarkashi, a small town at an elevation of 1588 mts, is situated between Varuna and Ashi rivers. These rivers slow into the Bhagirathi from either side of the town. Given its similarities to Kashi – the city enjoys similar ghats and temples like the city it is named after.

When you’re here, do remember to visit the Vishwanath Temple, dedicated to Shivji. Other temples you must visit include Annapurna Temple and Bhairav Temple. Also, it is believed that in the second millennium of Kaliyug (the current ongoing yuga), Kashi (i.e. Banaras) will be submerged, and Uttarkashi will replace it as an important religious centre.

Day 6: Uttarkashi / Sitapur

Another day when you will have an early wakeup call & breakfast. Today you’ll be reaching your destination of Sitapur, covering 212 KMs worth of journey in around 10 hours of driving time. Sitapur is situated at an elevation of roughly 1820 mts, just 7 kms from Gaurikund and 26 kms from Guptkashi.

Sitapur is situated only 2 kms from Son Prayag, lying at the confluence of Basuki and Mandakini rivers. It is said that a mere touch of the holy water from this holy site of Son Prayag helps the individual to attain the “Baikunth Dham”.

Another religiously important location is the Triyuginarayan – the marriage place of Lord Shiva and Parvati. This is situated at a distance of 14 kms by bus and 5 kms on foot from here.

In order to reach Kedarnath – you’ll be trekking from here. However, do remember to bathe in the hot water pond here and visit the Gauri Devi temple. This is the place where Goddess Parvati meditated to attain Lord Shiva.

Day 7: Sitapur/ Gaurikund/ Kedarnath

Today is going to be a long day with lots of physical activity! After an early breakfast you’ll proceed to Gaurikund, taking you two hours of driving time. Do remember to pack lunch and carry sufficient water for the day today.

From Gaurikund, you will start your trekking in earnest. Overnight, you’ll be staying in Kedarnath (mostly camping accommodations are available since the destruction of 2013 floods). Overall, you’ll be covering 32 Kms from Sitapur to Gaurikund by driving and then another 14 KMS of trek. This entire journey will take you about 9 hours in total.

The third dham is possible the remotest dhams you’ll be covering. Located in Shivji’s own home – the shrine is majestic and the natural setting is breath-taking.

From the towering mountains covered in snow, the plummeting streams and rivers, and lush green meadows and forests — and the arduous trek that gets you to it, serve to further cement the deep-rooted faith that this temple inspires!

This site is almost unchanged for centuries and has a spiritual energy of its own! For the devotees of Shivji, this is the last frontier, the ultimate path to salvation!

For the trekking part a Horse & doli are both decent options in case you’re unable to manage the trek. The cost ranges from INR 1000 to 2500. Though these rates are subject to change dependent on the number of pilgrims and the time of your journey during the season.

Day 8: Kedarnath / Rudraprayag

Today, you’ll be moving from Kedarnath to Rudraprayad after an early morning breakfast at Gaurikund. Today’s journey will be 75 KMs along with a 14 Km trek. You should reach Gaurikund by 11 AM and Rudraprayad at 3:30 PM, if you leave from Kedarnath around 6 AM. You will be stopping at Sitapur for lunch.

What we know as Garhwal today was earlier known as the Kedar-Khand in the past. In fact, Puranas will tell you that Kedar-Khan is the abode of God. The scriptures of Ramayana and Mahabharata were scripted here.

Also, named after Shivji (Rudra), Rudraprayag is situated at the holy confluence of Alaknanda and Mandakini rivers, at a distance of 34 kms from Srinagar (Garhwal, UK).

This confluence is particularly beautiful as if the two sisters are embracing each other! Here, it is believed that Narad Muni worshipped Shivji – who appeared here in his Rudra Avatar (incarnation) to bless Narad. The complete area is blessed with enormous natural splendor, places of sacred prominence, lakes and glaciers.

Day 9: Rudraprayag/ Badrinath

Not as early as yesterday – you’ll start your journey towards your final dham – Badrinath. After breakfast, you’ll be travelling a distance of 160 KMs, taking you around 8 hours of driving time to cover the distance! Ensure you leave early enough to reach Badrinath in time for evening Darshan and Pooja at the temple.

Badrinath and its route is a journey of beginning. The pilgrims visiting the spine always mention that the landmarks and vistas continually deliver a fresher view, a diverse feeling, an additional nuance to an experience.

It is said that this is the toughest leg of the journey and often times, it can be unforgiving, but only to a closed minded person. The journey from Rishikesh to Badrinath, as Sir Edmund Hillary rightfully noted in his expeditions, is, in many ways, a journey from the ocean to the sky, as much mental as physical. And another route to heaven – and spiritual liberation.

Day 10: Badrinath / Birhi

Coming to a close for your spiritual awakening – you’ll have a leisurely morning wakeup call and only depart post lunch for Birhi. Today’s journey is 95 KMs, taking you 5 hours to complete.

4 Ways of Adventure Bathing in Rishikesh – 2

Day 11: Birhi/Rishikesh

After breakfast at Birhi, proceed to Rishikesh. This journey will take you 160 KMs and 7 hours to complete.

It will be a brilliant idea to also explore Rishikesh while you’re here. Situated in the foothills of Himalayas, has some of the most pleasing views as well as the most soul calming vibes!

With Ganga spreading the happiest of emotions around – Rishikesh truly is one of the most mesmerizing places in the country. Do remember that Rishikesh is a vegetarian city by law, as well as an alcohol-free city.

In terms of places to visit – do remember to check out the oh-so-famous Laxman Jhulla, Ram jhulla and several ghats in and around this holy town.

Day 12: Rishikesh/Delhi

Head on back to your original location! Carry the peace, tranquility and happiness with you for a long time! The peace is quite like no other!

Char Dham Yatra Travel Tips

  • Remember to check the exact opening and closing dates of the Yatra.
  • Given that this Yatra holds immense importance for over a billion Hindus in the world – it is advisable that you remember to be kind along the way. For example, remember to cover your heads, remove shoes before entering any holy place.
  • Ensure you’re not littering anywhere on this trip. The hills and secluded locations need to be kept in their pristine conditions to ensure the bio-diversity of the region.
  • Carry heavy woolen clothes to protect from cold weather during the month of October-November and carry moderate woolen during Summer Season. Remember to dress in layers as the weather can change at the drop of a hat in the hills.
  • Do carry creams, moisturizers, sunscreen creams.
  • Pack a medical kit with painkillers, antibiotics, cough lozenges, Antiseptic cream, Iodine, tube-squeeze cream and medicines for cold and fever along with your routine medicines.
  • Remember to pack snacks.
  • Do not take pictures if cameras are not allowed in any particular area. Do not play with the sentiments of any particular religion.
  • At least a month before the Yatra, it is advisable to start preparatory exercises
  • Carry extra batteries and films for your camera, as electricity is not regular in such remote places.
  • Do not travel in the rainy season as there are a lot of landslides during that time.
  • Book hotel rooms in advance if you are travelling close to the temple opening dates, there is a heavy rush of pilgrims.
  • Alcohol or non-vegetarian food is not permitted during Char Dham Yatra Tour.

    History of Char Dham Temples

    History of Char Dham Temples

The 4 Dham is a group of four Hindu pilgrimage sites in India, which includes Badrinath, Kedarnath, Gangotri, and Yamunotri. These temples are located in the Garhwal region of Uttarakhand state in northern India. They are considered as some of the holiest Hindu shrines and are believed to have been established by Adi Shankaracharya, a Hindu philosopher and theologian, in the 8th century. The 4 Dham Yatra (pilgrimage) is a popular spiritual journey among Hindu devotees and is undertaken to attain Moksha or liberation from the cycle of birth and death.

    Legend about Badrinath

A Hindu holy town, located in the District of Chamoli of Uttarakhand, India, Badrinath is one of the four holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus, known as the “Char Dham.” The town is situated on the banks of the Alaknanda River and is dedicated to Lord Vishnu, who is worshipped here as Badrinath.

The history of Badrinath is believed to date back to thousands of years and is mentioned in Hindu scriptures such as the Mahabharata and the Puranas. According to legend, Lord Vishnu meditated at this site for several years and it was later rediscovered by Adi Shankaracharya, a Hindu saint and philosopher, in the 8th century. It is believed that the idol of Lord Vishnu was found by him in the water of the Alakananda River and later he brought it in a cave near the Tapt Kund.

Badrinath has been an important pilgrimage site for Hindus since ancient times and has been visited by countless pilgrims over the centuries. During the 17th and 18th centuries, the temple underwent major renovations and expansions under the patronage of the Garhwal rulers.

    Legend about Kedarnath

One of the famous Shiva temples, Kedarnath is located in the Rudraprayag District in Uttarakhand. Situated beside the River Mandakini, Kedarnath, which was previously known as Kedar-Khand, is a part of Char Dham circuit and dedicated to Lord Shiva who is known as Kedarnath here.

The legend about Kedarnath goes back thousands of years according to Mahabharata and the Puranas. According to these Hindu scriptures, after Pandavas won the war of Kurukshetra, they were told to absolve themselves from the sin they committed in the battlefield. They sought redemption from Lord Shiva who was in no mood to forgive them easily and thus eluded himself in the Himalayas taking the shape of a buffalo. Pandavas only found glimpses of the buffalo in different places in the Himalayas which became religious places. Kedarnath is where the hump of the buffalo was seen whereas the arms were found in Tungnath, face at Rudranath, navel in Madmaheshwar and hair at Kalpeshwar. These five sites together are known as Panch Kedar and the journey towards them is called Panch Kedar Yatra.

In recent times, Kedarnath has become a popular tourist destination, attracting thousands of visitors every year. Despite being affected by natural disasters such as flash floods and landslides, the temple continues to be a hub of religious and cultural activities for Hindus.

    Legend about Yamunotri

Yamunotri is a Hindu holy town located in the Uttarkashi district of Uttarakhand, India. It is one of the four holiest pilgrimage sites for Hindus, known as the "Char Dham". The town is situated near the source of the Yamuna River and is dedicated to the goddess Yamuna, who is worshipped here as Yamunotri.

According to Hindu legend, Yamuna was the daughter of the Sun God, Surya, and the sister of Yama, the god of death. She was known for her pious and pure nature and was worshipped as a goddess of life-giving waters.

Another legend states that Sage Asit Muni, a great sage and devotee of the goddess Yamuna, lived near Yamunotri. He is said to have never taken a bath in his life and instead bathed in the holy waters of Yamuna every day. After his death, a temple was built at the site to commemorate his devotion to the goddess.

    Legend about Gangotri

Another part of 4 Dham circuit, Gangotri is located in the Uttarkashi District of Uttarakhand. The town is situated near the sources of the River Ganges and dedicated to Goddess Ganga.

As per Hindu scriptures, the Ganges River is said to have descended from heaven to earth at Gangotri to purify the souls of the ancestors of King Bhagiratha. King Bhagiratha is said to have meditated and performed severe penance to bring the river to earth to absolve the sins of his ancestors.

Another legend states that the sage, Bhagirath, brought the river Ganges to earth after performing penance for several years. The temple at Gangotri is said to have been built by the Pandavas, the heroes of the Hindu epic, the Mahabharata, during their exile.
