Barrows' uniform hosiery

Black hosiery with a Starfleet uniform

Hosiery , also known as stockings or tights , were very common garments worn throughout the galaxy by a variety of species . Hosiery was designed to be skin tight and encase the wearer most often from the waist or legs down to their feet . ( TOS : " Shore Leave ", " A Taste of Armageddon ")

Hosiery were typically designed as sheer garments worn over one's legs. Thicker versions of hosiery were known as tights. Hosiery could be worn with a "panty", in which case they were typically referred to as pantyhose , or with a garter , in which case they were known as stockings. Hosiery were typically considered a female garment, but could apply to men, in which case the garments were sometimes known as socks .

In 2364 , Beverly Crusher straightened the seams on her stockings just prior to entering the Dixon Hill holodeck program. The holographic character Jessica Bradley also wore stockings when she was waiting for Dixon Hill in his office. ( TNG : " The Big Goodbye ")

Federation fashion [ ]

During the 2260s , the Starfleet uniforms of the time incorporated hosiery into the standard uniform for female personnel. Female Starfleet personnel could wear black hosiery underneath a skirt type uniform or with standard black trousers , the same as male personnel. ( TOS : " Charlie X ") Civilian attire of the time also displayed hosiery as a common form of clothing, worn by both women and girls. ( TOS : " Court Martial ")

Women's tights

Hosiery survived as a clothing item well into the 24th century and was commonly worn by women as civilian attire, but no longer as part of the Starfleet uniform , although a "skant" outfit did exist as late as 2365 which was apparently worn both bare legged and with hosiery. ( TNG : " Encounter at Farpoint ")

By the 2370s , hosiery was not commonly worn, but the fashion of wearing skin tight bodysuits appears to have been somewhat popular, including Seven of Nine 's dermaplastic garments worn throughout her time on the USS Voyager . ( VOY : " The Gift ")

Male Yonadan tights

Some alien races, such as the culture on Eminiar VII , wore hosiery as thick black tights by both men and women. This trend also appears to have been popular on the asteroid ship Yonada . ( TOS : " A Taste of Armageddon ", " For the World is Hollow and I Have Touched the Sky ")

The Guide to Star Trek Uniforms infographic

The Gude to Star Trek Uniforms infographic from Costume Supercenter . Make sure you know what uniform your wearing!

When the original Star Trek television series started, male and female officers wore similar outfits. The male Star Trek uniforms consisted of black pants, black boots and a velour shirt with the symbol on the left side. Females wore the same type of shirt, with black boots and tights, and a black skirt, although in some cases they wore black pants. The color of shirt worn identified the branch the crew member belonged to. Those in green shirts worked for command personnel, while beige stood for operations, and blue was for medical personnel only. The velour shirts were changed to nylon shirts starting in the third season. You can find many of the Star Trek Costumes here.

Don’t be the red-shirted ensign!

The footer of the design should include the copyright information and the URL to the original infographic landing page so readers can see the full-size infographic.  The Costume Supercenter logo should also be somewhere on the design to connect the infographic to the publishing company.

Uhura Satin Robe

From ThinkGeek.com : "When you've got an important job to do, the last thing you need is to be slowed down by a wardrobe malfunction. And, let's face it: you do some pretty important things around the house while wearing a robe. Things such as answering the door for the pizza delivery at the end of a long day where all you wanted to do when you got home was to take a bath. Or signing for a package while you're in the middle of getting ready for work. Or stepping out of the shower to dash back to your room to grab your forgotten shampoo while staying at a friend's house.

These are times when you probably aren't fully dressed, but that doesn't mean you want to flash a stranger (or an acquaintance), which can happen to the best of us with poorly thought-out robes. This robe has two different ways to help you avoid wardrobe malfunction. It has both an inner tie and an outer tie to keep the robe from falling open, and the sash is sewn on so you won't lose it while rewiring the entire communications system.

Then again, you can let it fall open if that's your thing. But we wanted to make sure you knew you had options."

The knee-length polysatin robe has both an exterior and interior tie and is available for $39.99 in Small/Medium and Large/Extra Large sizes at ThinkGeek.com

Star Trek: The Original Series Sleep Shirts

star trek uniform tights

From ThinkGeek.com : "We're all about having comfy stuff to wear. These sleep shirts actually have more than a passing resemblance to the miniskirted uniform of the ST:TOS era. They feature a rounded neck and color-appropriate flocked insignia imprinted on the chest of the short-sleeved body. Fortunately, nobody's gonna mind if your hair isn't regulation while you're wearing these, so go crazy."  The Original Series sleep shirts are available in five sizes for $29.99 at ThinkGeek.com .

Star Trek: The Original Series Ladies Pajama Sets

star trek uniform tights

From ThinkGeek.com:  "We were going to replicate the full-length hibernation jumpsuits from "Space Seed" (you know, the ones made from gold lamé netting?), but we decided to go with these instead. Because nobody looks good in gold lamé, plus who wants to sleep overnight in that, let alone hibernate? Ugh.

So we went with these 100% cotton jersey options instead. The pants have a drawstring, elasticized waist. The shirts have a rounded neck and color-appropriate flocked insignia imprinted on the chest of the short-sleeved shirt. It's basically everything gold lamé isn't. We think you'll like them. "

The Original Series Ladies Pajama Sets are available in five sizes for $39.99 at ThinkGeek.com .

Star Trek: The Original Series 3-Pack Panties

star trek uniform tights

From ThinkGeek.com : "Starfleet has a uniform for every occasion: regular duty, off duty, flight, special occasions... so it stands to reason that there must be officially-sanctioned underpants. After all, if you're found sleepwalking down the halls of the space station, those who rescue you will need to identify your rank and station. These Star Trek: The Original Series panties let you decide whether today is a Command Gold, Operations Red, or Science Blue kind of day."

The panties 3-pack is available in five sizes for $29.99 at ThinkGeek.com .

Star Trek Uniforms Fully Explained

Screenshot from Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan

Since its premiere more than 50 years ago, Star Trek has been at the center of a growing web of culture, television, film, and fandom. With nine television series and 13 films, with undoubtedly more to come, there is a wealth of material to analyze and enjoy. Today, an enthusiastic fan can take just a single aspect of the Star Trek universe and dive into it for weeks.

Take uniforms. A seemingly simple concept, right? Star Trek generally focuses on the experiences of people serving in Starfleet, essentially a futuristic version of the Navy in space. So, Starfleet uniforms should be fairly consistent, even boring. Everyone's supposed to look like a cohesive group, so there should be little variation.

However, the uniforms of Star Trek are so varied and connected to the intricate fictional world of the franchise that it's pretty fascinating. Someone appearing on Star Trek: The Next Generation and then showing up again in a film like Star Trek: First Contact will probably have to fit themselves into two very distinct outfits. With more than five decades of stuff to go through, says CNET , there's a dizzying variety of looks for what's supposed to be a pretty staid quasi-military organization.

Practically everything about the history of Star Trek uniforms is linked to behind-the-scenes stories, real-world creativity, in-universe drama, and even a touch of fashion history here and there. From color, to cut, to material, there's a lot to learn.

Color is key to Star Trek uniforms

In Star Trek: The Original Series , which ran from 1966 to 1969, you can't miss the brightly hued uniform shirts sported by the crew of the starship Enterprise . Captain James T. Kirk and other members of the command staff sport golden yellow tops, says Mental Floss . Blue is reserved for the science department and medical personnel, so you'll see it on Mr. Spock, the second-in-command, and the ship's physician, Doctor McCoy.

And what of the folk in red uniforms? According to Star Trek lore, these poor "redshirts" are little more than cannon fodder, though, officially, red is for communications, admin, and security. If you're watching an episode where a random, red-clad crewmember is asked to beam down to the planet with the main cast, don't get too attached. They're probably going to get zapped, eaten, or otherwise annihilated to further the episode's plot.

Of course, there are some exceptions. Statistically speaking, says Nerdist , redshirts are not that bad off. Consider also that red shirts adorn major characters like Scotty, the ship's chief engineer, who made it through the entire series.

Now that you've got that settled, remember that it's only good for one series. In later Star Trek shows, red and gold switched places. Captains like The Next Generation 's Jean-Luc Picard wore a dark red, while his security chief, Worf, wore gold.

Starfleet rank is shown by pips and stripes

Like so many real-world military organizations, Starfleet hinges on rank. Crewmembers are expected to follow orders, but on starships that can carry thousands of people, who are they supposed to take seriously? That's where the rickrack comes in.

In Star Trek: The Original Series , rank was denoted by stripes of gold ribbon on someone's sleeves. The more stripes, the higher the rank. Generally speaking, says Atlas Obscura , two or three stripes means a captain. Commissioned officers are a safe bet for one stripe. Non-commissioned people get either a bit of braid or nothing at all. The stripes were brought back for the reboot films beginning in 2009.

The follow up series, Star Trek: The Next Generation   went for something different during its 1987 – 1994 run. The colors became a more muted, and the old rank stripes, which, frankly, looked like something you might have picked up from your local craft store, were retired. In their place, officers wore "pips," subtle little pins, on their collars. The higher someone's rank, the more pips they sported.

Other films played around a bit with the rank symbols, like the different colors and badges shown in 1982's Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan . Still, they weren't too off the original mark. Generally speaking, the more junk on someone's uniform, the more likely it is that you'll have to follow their orders.

The original series went for velour

Futurama 's Zapp Brannigan character, a send-up of Captain Kirk, is all about his velour uniform. The first Star Trek series really was into luxurious velour, too, but the fabric proved challenging to maintain. It's not as if the 1960s were known for comfortable natural materials, after all.

According to Esquire , the fabric initially used in Star Trek: The Original Series was a little flashy. Costume designers used a stretch cotton velour for the tops, with a black synthetic Dacron infused with sparkles for the pants. Both materials were meant to subtly glitter under studio lights, lending the uniforms a shimmery, 23rd-century, spacefaring feel.

Unfortunately, the velour was a flop. Many called it "that rotten velour," noting that the fabric tended to shrink in the wash and could tear easily. In the third and final season, designers substituted it for a double-knit nylon, says CNET , which proved to be a much hardier fabric, especially when it got thrown into the washing machine.

Captain Kirk's special green shirt was a little embarrassing

Originally, reports Atlas Obscura , the command staff of Star Trek: The Original Series was supposed to be sporting a muted green. Under the studio lights, though, the cameras read the green velour as a golden yellow. The production team simply went with it for the rest of the series.

Careful observers of the 1960s run will note that Captain Kirk is sometimes seen in a very green tunic-style shirt. According to an interview with series costume designer Bill Theiss , that's because it was made out of a different material. That particular shirt looked genuinely green. This is also why some of the colors in the original series seem to change, said Theiss. Even the miniature of the Enterprise could appear ever so slightly green under the right conditions.

William Shatner, the Canadian actor who played Kirk, wasn't necessarily fond of the tightly wrapped look, says Cinemablend . "It was a little embarrassing after lunch to have that tight green thing on you," he said.

Star Trek's women went from pants to miniskirts

The first pilot episode of Star Trek: The Original Series , " The Cage " is an odd duck. Though it was shot in 1964, it didn't make it to screens in its complete form until a Betamax release in 1989. Bits of the story were included in the season one two-parter "The Menagerie," but it contained only the briefest glimpses of what might have been.

These included things like a smiling Spock, different uniforms, and a woman in command wearing pants . Star Trek: The Original Series is notorious for its gendered uniforms. The men wore pants and long-sleeved shirts. Female crewmembers were confined to miniskirts so short that Lieutenant Uhura, the communications officer, always seemed on the verge of an embarrassing situation when she sat down.

That's partially why Number One, the second-in-command in "The Cage," stands out: She's wearing pants. Number One, played by Majel Barrett, is also a daring commander. But she wasn't considered right for the character. When Star Trek got its second pilot, none of the women were in command, and certainly none of them wore pants. Barrett returned, albeit as the emotional, mini-skirted Nurse Chapel.

Nichelle Nichols, who played Uhura, offers up a counterpoint. "I was wearing [miniskirts] on the street," she told the BBC . "What's wrong with wearing them on the air? [...] It was the era of the miniskirt. Everybody wore miniskirts."

The first Star Trek movie shook took uniforms in a weird direction

Star Trek: The Motion Picture looked like it was going to be a big deal. The 1979 film was the first time that fans would get to see their beloved crew on the big screen. Anticipation was high. Then, the movie debuted.

It landed with a dull thud. While die-hard fans still got enjoyment out of Star Trek 's film debut, most viewers couldn't get past the plodding story and dialogue-heavy scenes. It made just enough profit to justify a sequel, to be sure. SyFy contends that The Motion Picture did originate some interesting new trends for the franchise, like wearable communicators and redesigned Klingons . Still, few would point to this entry as their favorite Star Trek movie.

Some of the blame surely lies with the redesigned uniforms. Where The Original Series had colorful, if somewhat cartoonish togs for the crew, The Motion Picture made it look like everyone was going to the weirdest slumber party ever. According to Memory Alpha , the crew was now outfitted in two-piece tunics and one-piece jumpsuits in mind-numbing shades like pale blue and beige. At least the women on the crew were dressed in the same jumpsuits worn by the men. They might have looked oddly dull for space adventurers, but crewmembers like Lt. Uhura didn't look like they needed to worry about errant breezes. And, if nothing else, the space pajamas look pretty comfortable.

The Wrath of Khan redeemed Star Trek uniforms while cutting costs

Though Star Trek: The Motion Picture began the series tradition of changing Starfleet uniforms at every opportunity, rebooted uniforms didn't get very eye-catching until the second film. In Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan, both the plotting and the uniforms got a much-needed upgrade.

To be fair, the striking red jackets of The Wrath of Khan wouldn't have existed as we know them if it weren't for the beige jumpsuits of The Motion Picture . As revealed by Empire , costume designer Robert Fletcher, burned somewhat by his experiences on the first film, decided to stay on in an attempt to redeem his craft. Fletcher still had to work within budget, says Forgotten Trek . Indeed, the budget was smaller, since the studio had been spooked somewhat by the lackluster performance of the first motion picture. As a result, Fletcher rather cleverly utilized the old movie uniforms. His team dyed the tunics red because that was the shade that took best to the fabric.

Meanwhile, Fletcher added a few more militaristic details to the revamped uniforms, like boxy shoulders, stripes, and shiny rank insignia. Fletch referred to it as "Hornblower in outer space," referring to the popular Horatio Hornblower series, set in the era of the Napoleonic Wars. The maroon color proved so successful that it persisted far beyond the film and back onto television with the follow-up series, Star Trek: The Next Generation.

Star Trek: The Next Generation's uniform was all about spandex

While the uniforms debuted in Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan were structured, boxy outfits inspired by military getups, the theme wasn't going to last, for William Ware Theiss, who designed the costumes for Star Trek: The Original Series , was ready to completely revamp even his own designs. Theiss was called upon to design the costumes for the first year of Star Trek: The Next Generation , the follow-up series that premiered in 1987. According to Forgotten Trek , Theiss wanted to pull back from the structured look of Wrath of Khan and return to a softer appearance.

That meant spandex. Specifically, Theiss employed a heavyweight material, of the type often used for swimsuits. He also changed the color scheme, making red the color for command staff, while gold was switched to engineering and security. Blue remained the key shade for medical and science personnel.

While designers might have liked the spandex, it got poor reviews from the actors. The form-fitting material was unforgiving of a heavy lunch or brief dalliance with a slice of cake. Robert Blackman, who replaced Theiss in later seasons, came to the rescue with a different cut and wool fabric. Unfortunately, only the male actors got the best changes, like two-piece uniforms. Female actors like Marina Sirtis, who played Counselor Troi, were stuck in uncomfortable one-piece jumpsuits for a while longer.

Deanna Troi's exception confused Trek fans

In Star Trek: The Next Generation , ship's counselor Deanna Troi was actually a Starfleet officer, but you wouldn't know it from her clothes. While everyone else on staff was wearing the regulation Starfleet uniform, Troi was often stuck in revealing onesies that recalled the first film's unfortunate jumpsuits.

It may have something to do with Troi's gender. As quoted at Forgotten Trek , Marina Sirtis, who played Troi, took a dim view of how the show treated female characters. "The women on this show are very non-threatening," she said. "You don't see women in power positions." Troi was meant to be a soft, caring therapist. Perhaps her clothing was meant to reflect that gentleness, but with an admittedly sexist twist that lowered her necklines and kept Sirtis trapped in revealing spandex for much longer than her coworkers. Too often, her clothes reflected stories where Troi was made to be helpless or even outright dull for the sake of the plot.

Counselor Troi finally got to wear the real uniform in "Chain of Command, Part 1," a season six two-parter. In it, Captain Jellico, an uptight fill-in for Captain Picard, curtly tells Troi to just wear the uniform already. While the impetus for the wardrobe change might have been embarrassing for her character, Sirtis was delighted. As she told the BBC , "I was thrilled when I got my regulation Starfleet uniform [...] I got all my brains back."

The "skant" tried to reach gender equality but fell flat

We should give Gene Roddenberry some credit. While he was often of his time for things like scantily clad secondary characters on Star Trek: The Original Series , he genuinely tried to push back against cultural assumptions. Sometimes, it worked and became practically legendary, as when he helped to create a diverse bridge crew on the first television series. Other times, he pushed for costume parity that simply didn't land.

Roddenberry was involved with the production of Star Trek: The Next Generation from its 1987 premiere until shortly before his death in 1991. He was part of almost everything in the series, including the costume design. As reported by Star Trek.com , Roddenberry directed designer William Ware Theiss to design what became known as the "skant."

This take on the minidress was made out of the same spandex as the other uniforms. It was also meant to be unisex. Crewmembers of any gender would be able to wear the thigh-baring skant. Yet, it was a hard sell. The skant was ever-so-briefly seen on a male crewmember here and there in the first season, says SyFy, but never after that. Female crew like Counselor Troi wore it a bit longer, but actors and viewers alike thought it just made her look like a space cheerleader. Though you can understand what Roddenberry and company were going for, the skant just couldn't stay. It faded into fan lore and obscurity soon after the first season.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine made the uniforms fit for actual work

Star Trek didn't stop with Star Trek: The Next Generation . The sequel series was followed up by a progression of films and further television series. These included Star Trek: Deep Space Nine , which premiered in 1993 and briefly ran concurrently with The Next Generation . Though both series are supposed to take place at roughly the same time, the uniforms seen on Deep Space Nine were a serious departure.

Costume designer Robert Blackman returned to the jumpsuit design but mercifully stayed clear of figure-hugging, back-breaking spandex, says Forgotten Trek . Instead, the looser jumpsuits were made out of wool. Blackman had, like earlier designers, discovered that wool took dye better than other fabrics and held up to repeated washings.

The softer uniforms looked like they could exist in a real, workaday reality. Characters like Chief O'Brien can be seen in the bowels of Deep Space Nine, a scrappy space station inherited from its previous Cardassian occupants. His jumpsuit, based in part on a mechanic's outfit and NASA workaday gear, looks right at place in the more gritty, realistic world of Deep Space Nine .

Star Trek: Lower Decks brings back color and might explain a big mystery

Star Trek: Lower Decks is an animated comedy series, the first ever to take a look at the ridiculous side of Star Trek . While it's very definitely a silly take on the franchise, the Lower Decks series actually holds a clue to the ever-changing and seemingly inconsistent uniforms across the series.

In part, the uniforms of Lower Decks are an homage to a never-used 1994 redesign. According to Trek Movie , creator Mike McMahan realized the discarded uniform design for the Star Trek: Generations movie was just right for his series. It calls back to The Next Generation just enough to make connections but remains distinct and colorful in its new two-dimensional context.

This latest series might also help explain the constantly shifting Starfleet uniforms. Careful viewers may have already noticed that different ship and station crews sport wildly different looks, even when they're supposed to be taking place at the same time.

Inverse points out the apparent fact that Starfleet uniforms seem to correspond to very specific ships and jobs. Someone sent to a space station like Deep Space Nine would wear one uniform, while another crewmember on Picard's Enterprise would sport something noticeably different. An outside viewer could still see they were Starfleet personnel but might correctly guess they were stationed in different places. The looks on Lower Decks , which are their own unique creations, add more evidence to support this theory.

A Close-Up Look At Starfleet Uniforms From ‘Star Trek: Picard’

Thanks to filming on location at the Anaheim convention center, a number of photos from the location shoot for Star Trek: Picard have surfaced. Everyone’s talking about the uniforms, so here is TrekMovie’s breakdown of the uniform, created by artist Aaron Harvey.  He didn’t have a trailer to go on, as he did when he created a similar graphic for  Star Trek: Discovery , but he looked at the photos and pulled together a best guess based on what’s out there.

The Starfleet uniform from Star Trek: Picard

Picard show uniform

Design Notes

  • Division colored shoulder/yoke
  • High collar
  • Mock turtleneck, possibly with a subtle texture
  • Rank pips have been moved from collar to right breast (similar to uniforms seen in Star Trek Online and from the 2009 “Countdown to Star Trek”, movie tie-in comic book)
  • Combadge is larger than its TNG-era counterpart. The little bit we can see in the CBS Upfront image suggests an open framed delta similar to the “All Good Things…” combadge. The rotated oval is a homage to the combadges of TNG and the promotional delta imagery used to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Star Trek in 1996.
  • While it would be odd to have a split delta AND split background, it does seem that Starfleet’s “bifurcated delta” as established in Star Trek: Discovery is, for the time being, the delta of choice. This is supported by a closer look at the Starfleet Headquarters banners that have been seen in the recent pictures from the location shoot for Star Trek: Picard .
  • The uniform consists of 3 pieces: undershirt, pants, and a zippered uniform tunic/jacket.
  • The pants appear fairly similar to the TNG-era uniforms: full-length pants covering all but the heel, with a subtle triangular-cut opening for the top of the foot and toe.
  • This uniform feels oddly plain, considering it’s from a modern, 2019 show. It lacks the detail most contemporary genre shows heap onto their costumes—the result of using super high-resolution cameras, and larger-than-ever home theaters. That perhaps indicates that this is not the final iteration of Starfleet uniform that will be seen in the full series. This could be an early mock-up of the uniforms used for a brief clip specifically filmed for CBS All Access’ UpFronts for advertisers. Similar footage was made and used for the same purpose for Star Trek: Discovery in 2017. It could also indicate that this series will be something quite different from all earlier Star Trek series, one that won’t feature Starfleet or its uniformed personnel as heavily in the past

Design Influences

This new Starfleet uniform has a lot of influences from the 24th (and early 25th) century; it’s a bit of a mashup of designs we’ve seen before.

The Next Generation

Perhaps the most obvious influence is the Next Generation season 3 uniform with its trademark Mandarin-style collar, which makes a return in Picard . Also, this new uniform is a two-piece design, like the TNG uniform.

star trek uniform tights

The collar in the Picard uniform is higher and has a deeper V-neck than the TNG uniform, somewhat resembling the collars seen in the semi-official Countdown graphic novel prequel to Star Trek (2009), which shows the Prime universe events that led to the destruction of Romulus in 2387. The Picard design also borrows the similar positions of the rank pips—on the right breast, rather than on the collar.

star trek uniform tights

Deep Space Nine/Voyager

Perhaps the second most recognizable design influence is that the division color is on the shoulders while the rest of the uniform is black, a lot like the more utility-focused jumpsuits seen on Deep Space Nine and Voyager .

star trek uniform tights

Star Trek Online

Lastly, there’s a bit of the enlisted uniform from Star Trek Online as well, especially in the neck area, with the idea of an undershirt that you can see through the “V” in the collar. The division color is on the shoulders, like the Picard uniform.

Aaron Harvey is a graphic designer from Los Angeles and co-author of the upcoming book “ Star Trek: The Official Guide to the Animated Series .” He also studies improv at Impro Studio in Los Angeles and will be in a fully-improvised show in the style of ’90s Star Trek, “The Improvised Generation: Night Shift.”

Star Trek: Picard  is expected to be released in late 2019. It will be available on CBS All Access in the USA. Space and CraveTV in Canada, and on Amazon Prime Video for the rest of the world.

It does look cheap to the point of it being a one off use for the pilot. The design is cool, the materials and detail lacking.

And you can tell this from some blurry long distance on set photos and a fan-created extrapolation? Frankly, if it does look like this, i’ll be pleased. I feel some modern shows and movies overdo the “detail” and “texturing.” I know why they do it, but it’s actually starting to become less and less realistic/believable.

Umm, no, there is a short video (from a CBS promo) showing it much more clearly and it looks bad.

I get the design choices… It would be nice to see some synergy between the new show, IDW’s Countdown and STO. Pipe dream, I know. But still.

Love when TrekMovie goes in depth on little tidbits while we are waiting for more info to drop. My money is on the uniforms not being important to the plot and/or a flashback.

I hope you’re incorrect, but you’re probably right.

I hope you are 100% correct, GQMF.

I don’t think the uniforms are insignificant, I just think they’re the Starfleet uniforms and there’s not much more to it than that. I DO think however that we’re not going to be spending much time at all with Starfleet in this series. I think the first few episodes might be on earth or at SF but other than that Picard will be going off on whatever mission it is that he feels he needs to complete to “make things right” and no that won’t be time travel.

Agreed…

It’s great to get the in depth look – with graphics!

THIS. IS. A DISASTER!!! OF BIBLICAL PROPORTIONS!!!

Now that we have that bit of nonsense out of the way, good analysis.

The new uniform has a similar cutaway as the Countdown version as well, though reversed.

The close up photo of it looks like cheap cosplay. Is this 2019?

Dr. Image I’m not sure cheap is the issue.

But it does look like the construction of the top wasn’t ideal on the ensign’s uniform. There is a definite bump where the neck facing ends, and another where the shoulderpad begins.

I keep thinking of Gersha Phillips point in a recent interview that the bright colours, especially the yellow, show everything.

It may be that with high definition a boldly coloured solid fabric is really unforgiving.

And it suggests that all the super detailed costumes we’re seeing in HD are as much to cover up small fit and construction issues as to take advantage of HD.

But it really doesn’t. The closeup of it on that actor talking to Stewart reminded me of the countless ensigns and background characters on TNG who seemed to wear the earlier versions of the uniform.

But at least theirs fit. It was obvious they weren’t wearing custom tailored uniforms like the main cast, but they didn’t exactly look unprofessional either.

I dont hate it. In fact its more true to the era then i was expecting!

so silly question.. you sure this is Starfleet and not Academy uniforms?

That was my initial thought as well!

Yeah I wouldn’t be surprised if it turned out to be either an Academy uniform or a Starbase uniform.

But if it is the regular uniform I think that’s fine too.

Yes, the banners show them at Starfleet Headquarters, there would be a mix of uniforms if these were cadet uniforms. The guy in the video is an ensign and the other shots from a distance show more pips so they are even higher ranked.

Well the pips could also indicate Class as in 1 = freshman 2 = sophomore etc.

The pips for Academy and the Pips for service are different, from the leaked footage I could see that they’re using the TNG rank pips, so if they were in the academy, then the pips would be more square, not round

Since the new trailer states Picard was an admiral, and he left Starfleet for some reason, that doesn’t seem to connect him to the Academy. My first thought was he is back at headquarters about to make a request or something…

All the banners in these shot say “Star Fleet HQ” so I am betting they are not academy uniforms.

TNG uniforms are my favorite, so the color over black isn’t what I hoped for. Still, I’m not going to judge anything until I see the show properly. If I judged a show based on costumes, TOS would be the worst Trek show, which IMHO, is not the case.

Nicely done, Aaron! Can’t wait until we get a look at the ship designs…

If Starfleet doesn’t play a major role in this show, they may have decided to design the uniforms mostly to provoke nostalgia.

Agreed. That’s why I went with the oval that calls back to TNG.

That promotional delta premiered with the special celebrating the finale of TNG, in May 1994, more than two years before the 30th anniversary.

The strangest thing is that they are using the TOS type font for the “Star Trek” title instead of anything related to TNG or DS9/VOY… It worked fin for DISCO or the KT movies, but this is the 25th century.

I’m guessing that TOS font is meant to be the brand for all Star Trek series now, like the Star Wars logo. Works for me.

OTOH, we are still 4-6 months out from the premiere. Go dig up the very first Deep Space Nine promo (the one without any photos or video of the cast—“Coming in January 1992!”).

THAT font was truly repellent.

The thing about that is the TOS font is widely recognized as iconically Star Trek. The TNG font is amazingly dated and just doesn’t sell the show anymore.

BUT the split font that screams 80s would fit with the bifurcated Starfleet insignia. Junkball on YouTube has a fascinating video about fonts in Trek, and I’m surprised by how many references there are across the series to various “Star Trek” fonts

The uniform on the cadet in the clip where he asks for Picard’s name looks like it doesn’t fit him and looks a bit odd. Seems to be really loose and like it was meant for someone else.

If you look at the chick walking behind Picard, her uniform is loose too.

Is there a particular reason why my comments keep going *poof*?

I really hope those are not the new combadges. The one from “All Good Things…” and “Endgame” would be better and more in line with canon.

It would also be nice for there to be better synergy between ST:P, IDW’s Countdown and STO. It would be nice for CBS recognize at least some aspects of the game as canon. I’m not so sure about all the story lines, but definitely the Enterprise-F and the uniforms.

LOVE IT!!!!

As said, its very TNG era, but updated to recognize its in a new era. That’s how you SHOULD do it!

But it still may just be a cadet uniform although the officer uniforms may only be slightly different from this anyway

When the uniform change is this subtle, it doesn’t really matter much in the grand scheme of things. The only thing I saw that I liked was the move of the rank indicators from the collar (always felt that was silly) to the more visible location up front. Otherwise, not much of a change.

I think it far more likely that the position of the pips was influenced by those on the future uniforms in various episodes like “All Good Things…”, “Endgame”, and “The Visitor.” Those uniforms would have inspired the position of the Online and Countdown pips, after all.

That’s where they were in Enterprise

I bet Geekfilter made the infographics. Just gorgeous!

Look very much like the discarded Generations uniforms they originally used before changing to DS9 while filming.

Not really, the colors were reversed

Do we refer to this commbadge as the Commbadge Plus or Commbadge Pro?

Do not need elaborate detail. Simple texture is enough.

It seems to be lacking even that however.

Also love the new com badges! That’s the biggest indicator we are back in the 24th century. I even loved when they made an appearance on Discovery with Section 31.

The Section 31 badge is the best one I’ve seen so far. I almost bought one, but I’m too cheap.

Could this be the first Star Trek show that is NOT based on characters in Starfleet? That actually would be kind of cool and different. Perhaps Picard is a diplomat on some journey or quest? And maybe since the uniforms are not heavily detailed, Starfleet is just in the background, only appearing every so often.

This sounds very promising, but with the track record of these Discovery writers my optimism is diminished. But, here’s hoping!

It’s a different writing team and Michael Chabon is on it.

Chabon did some work for Discovery as I recall. At least the Short Trek about the abandoned ship falling in love with a stowaway. I thought it was well done. He may have some behind the scenes coordination with Discovery depending on whether his short syncs up.

I have a feeling we may not see Picard in Starfleet in the beginning but by the end of the season he may become part of it again. But yes this would be something really different and interesting if its not directly about him being in starfleet anymore. It shows they are willing to think outside the box and thats what Star Trek needs.

I’ve been very skeptical about any TNG characters making appearances, and have basically assumed the storyline will be away from Starfleet.

But Jonathan Frakes’ new tweet showing him with Patrick Stewart has got me reconsidering.

Yes, we know Frakes is directing the 2nd two episode block.

But he looks like he’s had a significant beard and hair style reshaping from his directing stints on Discovery and the Orville.

Could be just happenstance…but it made me wonder if he has a small role as Admiral Riker.

I still have a feeling a few characters may show up first season TG47, just trying to keep it all a surprise. Yes, I expect to be completely wrong lol but I just can’t get over the fact the same group that put Pike in Discovery for 14 straight episodes and made him captain of that ship when he was already captain of the Enterprise when there was NO reason to do it other than obvious fan service and to get more people to watch Discovery is not going to push the fan service envelope a little more on this show too. Especially when they know other characters will only motivate people to watch more.

But maybe they think Picard is all they need to get those people on board. But people still want to see him interact with others from TNG. Its not about having a ‘TNG reunion’ it just would feel weird he would have no ties to any of them at this point. Or maybe the plan is to hold off on any TNG characters until second season and let the new characters develop first. If so, then thats a valid reason.

Personally, I would be pleasantly stunned if NO TNG people appeared somewhere in this show. I am fully expecting two or three to show up and various points during the run. When they all say they have not been contacted, I cannot help but think that a rouse.

PLEASE, make a uniform that fits Picard this time.

But then he wouldn’t have an opportunity to perform “the Picard Maneuver”!

Thumb’s up to that comment!

When Star Trek 2009 was announced, I wrote to J J Abrams and suggested that all the crew on the new Enterprise wear baseball caps with ‘Star Trek’ written on the front.

Could this happen in the new Picard series? I might write-in and suggest it…

Baseball caps already happened in DS9.

And Enterprise. That NX-01 hat was boss, though.

I think the combadge might just be the existing “future version” seen in All Good Things instead of this oval-shaped one. The sharper angles in the existing one would also seem to match the uniform better, but I could be wrong.

It will probably be neither! It’s hard to guess from just a tiny bit of the top of a delta and a blurry far off shape, but that’s part of the fun of guessing!

Trekkies are irredeemable a-holes. If it’s not exactly like the originals, it’s newfangled “crap”; if it’s exactly like the originals, it’s not “advanced” enough, which is actually crap, since comfortable, practical clothes aren’t going to change in only 300 years, if ever.

Nice over-generalization, yawn

I like them overall. I agree with those saying we might not see much of Starfleet, Picard and Co might actually be trying to avoid them. Perhaps Picard starts off as a Professor or Professor Emeritus at Starfleet Academy.

There was a list of character descriptions for “Picard” reported a few months back. Have no idea if it was authentic, but it seemed to suggest Picard would be teamed with a group of Han Solo types. Or better yet something like the “Gambit” two-parter from TNG.

I’m not sure about the authenticity of the character descriptions, but the casting has definitely skewed younger. Somehow this is all supposed to tie-in with the destruction of Romulus, though it’s unclear how big a part of the story that will be, or if it is just an important character moment for Picard. I really enjoy Discovery, but moving ahead to post-TNG-era is exciting, as we can get subtle (and maybe not so subtle) tie-ins with the events of TNG/DS9/VOY.

Exciting indeed.

I would like to see props like the type 2 phasers, tricorders, and communicators of this era.

Some of the Starship designs would be good too…

Maybe we’ll see the USS Emmett Till from DS9 doc!

..Though as an Amazon Prime subscription holder I’d like to complain about the unfair advantage given to Canada and EU countries to watch this for Free through their subscription. While the USA counterparts get screwed and have to pay CBS all access!? It’s like a “WTF” momemt !

Aaron, Amazon is not free. In fact its actually higher than All Access in some places like in America. In Canada, they still have to subscribe to that cable channel to get it and one person said you can pay up to $18 a month to subscribe to it depending on your package deal and location.

Why do some people act like these shows are being watched for free everywhere? Its NOT, every platform both Discovery and Picard are all on paid media. No one is showing it over free airwaves. And believe it or not not everyone has Netflix or Amazon already. Some really do have to subscribe to those just to watch the show as we did for All Access. That’s the point after all, to get NEW people to subscribe.

And dosent everyone just down load or stream the shows illegally of they can’t get or want to pay? Am I the only one that still downloads torrants and putlocker type sites?

I guess most sites frown on people advocating to download things illegally so most people don’t mention it, but sure people still do it. But I do think it has become less and less of it as media companies have become more saavy and there are more crackdowns on those sites.

But I have no doubt plenty o people watch the show illegally.

We’re still paying extra. That’s the point he’s making. Come on. Yes, people are paying for Amazon all around the world. But only the US has to pay extra for the CBS subscription. To watch it on Amazon. Which we’re already paying for.

Speak for yourself. I don’t pay for Amazon Prime. It’s currently not worth it at all.

Agreed, like no one needs 2-day shipping, and Amazon is an evil corporation, total antithesis to Federation values, so like why would I want to line Jeff Bezos’s wallet?

I honestly cannot tell if you are being sarcastic or not.

Yes well, welcome to America. We pay more for everything, like healthcare. CBS has chosen us [their home country] to make their money off their streaming service. Seems to me like they’re entitled to do that.

As a non-US resident Id’ like to complain about the unfair advantage given to US residents only needing a single subscription to watch Star Trek.

Aaron we can no more watch it free through our paid subscription to Amazon than you can through your paid subscription to CBS AA.

Sometimes you just can’t improve on perfection. I have always thought the STNG Season 3 uniforms, with Picards own variants, were the best of all series and closest to what TOS uniforms could have been in the future. DS9 and Voyager were variants of the academy uniform and never had the impact for me. Similarly the Enterprise D is still the most beautiful and sleek of all starships with it’s smooth lines. the USS Discovery took a while to get used to but I still don’t think it’s a ‘beautiful’ ship. I suppose we’ll just have to get used to these new uniforms designs.

The Disco is ugly as hell, and although the D is graceful and elegant, she isn’t my favorite design

From the combadge design I get the sense that in this Picard timeline perhaps the Federation is fractured 20% Section 31 or some other force maybe?

Beautiful art, Aaron – represented like the true communication artist you are. Although all things must evolve, I must say that the badge/communicator established for the 7 seasons of TNG was the best. Its beautiful, almost art deco-ish design, is/was timeless. They never needed to stray from it, except for mirror/alternate universes, and finally officially for the TNG films.

Thank you! The badge is guesswork based on blurry imagery, so it may be totally different. It does seem markedly bigger than in the TNG era though!

As much as I loved DS9, I never really liked the early-DS9/VOY era mostly-black jumpsuit uniforms. These are pretty reminiscent of those. I don’t think I’m in love with them.

Sometimes, less is more though. I’m happy at least they do not appear overwrought like some contemporary TV and movie designs.

Reminds me of the alternate generations uniforms with the colors flipped

So what happened to the blue grey uniforms in Ds9 and movies? Seems likes these are a step backwards.

Had they brought in Robert Blackman we probably would have seen that design updated in some way. What we have here is essentially a reimagining of the uniform from TNG Seasons 3 – 7.

Seems more reminiscent of DS9 Seasons 1 – 4 and Voyager uniforms with the colored shoulders and black everything else.

Yeah, I liked the three piece upper body part of the uniforms. Lots of options—jacket, vest and solid undershirt, or just solid undershirt. Looked spiffy.

TNG uniforms all the way, ive spent countless time, drawing those as a kid, very inspirational uniforms

Can we PLEASE get away from the broken delta? That’s literally my only complaint.

Mine too. That is truly my only complaint of this uniform. And while I prefer the final DS9 uniforms* to this, these are decent uniforms. But that “bifurcated delta” has to go.

*My favorite uniforms are the TWOK ones and the FC/DS9 ones. Uniform uniforms, HA!

Why not just modify the First Contact uniforms? Just work from those designs. Why the drastic and backward alteration? Even real life uniforms in the armed forced have not changed that much over the decades. Not very believable to be honest.

holy jawas it’s finally happenning!

Ahh. It has the Kurtzman “25% different” delta.

Midnight’s Edge don’t know anything.

They know what they’re doing. They’re angry fans trying to de-legitimize what they don’t like among other (presumably) angry fans. And from the comments on Youtube and AICN it’s working. It’s having a Trumpian effect on the community. They know from personal experience that angry people are pre-inclined to believe anything you say as long as it’s negative.

Interesting analysis Sam.

It really makes me appreciate the articles and atmosphere here at Trekmovie all the more.

Hey, you win most ridiculous comment so far, and the page is 95% ridiculous comments!

Afterburn being afterburn. Do you need an analgesic cream? Or maybe a tranquilizer

The 25% difference thing was an offhanded remark by John Eaves and it was an art directors note which had NOTHING to do with legality. He’s said that over and over but now some YouTube channel that thinks it knows better has manufactured a conspiracy theory out of it.

I get that kind of note all the time. “Make it X% different” It’s a verbal shorthand for “Can we get something different? Not sure how much but just make it visibly different than the last iteration.”

So damn frustrating.

Nice graphic, although some of the details are a little off. For example, you can see from the set photos that the coloured shoulders are not pointed in the way that they used to be; the ‘point’ is now flat, to match the little affectation at the front of the yoke. I quite like them. They, at least, follow the established uniform aesthetic that has gone before, unlike the actual Star Trek Online or Countdown versions.

Thankfully they’re back to a sensible rank display.

Looking again at one of the set photos, is it possible the combadges are different colors to match the uniform’s division coloring?

Looks like a DS9/VOY uniform altered to look more cartoonish. The “V” division color bump in the middle, the black shirt/turtleneck underneath… Meh

Will there be a dress uniform like the ones on the next generation? It would be net to see that one.

Doing the Morn’s work. Thank you.

I get the impression that Starfleet is not factoring into this series in a huge way, so I suspect we won’t be getting much opportunity to be horrified about some minor design details.

Measurements

Below is a table of the measurements I was able to to take. Some Imperial measurements are rounded.

Division Fabric (Downloads)

star trek uniform tights

The raised superhero-esque print used on these uniforms sits much more flush with the fabric than the deltas on the Discovery uniforms. I scaled the image to actual size in Illustrator, then traced and averaged the pattern before tiling it. Since the fabric was not laying flat, I only based the traced pattern on stars in the center of the frame and closest to the ruler to minimize distortion.

Below are PDF files you can download. One suitable for large applications sized 30″x60″ and another smaller 8 1/2″x11″. Print at 100%. Do not scale.

Command Star Pattern Downloads

Operations swirl pattern downloads, the details.

Not much to see under here except the hem of the undershirt. Tights only have an inseam, no outseam.

I’m looking for the skant uniform pattern Please help

Only question is, where to buy the textured fabric… 🥲

Where can I purchase the pattern for the uniform?

There isn’t a published pattern, but you can kitbash from an existing pattern for something with similar cutting lines.

Fwiw, I wouldn’t be surprised if one if the “Big 3” do a near-ish pattern for cosplaying, just as happens for other media.

Did you get an answer?

The details on the sleeve were screen-printed by the costuming team. There’s some debate as to whether they used an opaque ink or a clear silicon ink. I looked into the costs (and learning curve) of screen-printing my own fabric and it was a bit too much, so I’ve made a workaround with my Cricut machine and some heat-transfer vinyl…

How did you manage to do the work around?

I’m working on a custom group order of the security one, it can be made. If you’re interested, let me know 🙂

Get in touch, I m interested
