Please note that guests from Alice Springs will be provided with lunch, while those joining from Ayers Rock must arrange their meals before the  tour . After our delicious lunch, we embarked on a captivating journey to explore the indigenous interpretive cultural centre of the mesmerising Red Centre . We explored the Mutitjulu waterhole and discovered sacred rock art sites. We listened to ancient creation stories and continued our hike towards Kuniya Piti. Uluru Tours & Vacations

Two women stand in front of Uluru, having their picture taken during a bright red sunset

From traditional bush medicine to birthing caves, sacred waterholes to rock art, discover why Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the spiritual heart of Australia.

Standing 348 meters tall in the middle of an otherwise flat desert, Uluru is the coolest monolith you’ll probably ever see. But here’s the thing: Uluru’s so much more than a monolith—it’s a living landscape that holds 60,000 years of Anangu history, stories and culture. Join us on a Red Centre adventure to hike through 300-million-year-old canyons and gorges, listen and learn from  First Nations  guides, and watch these sacred sites come to life. If the fluorescent glow of Uluru at sunset doesn’t take your breath away, the glittering night sky certainly will.

Tours to Uluru

Let's create an exclusive trip for your group.

But it's also a place of deep spiritual importance to the traditional custodians,  the Aṉangu people , who've been connected to these lands for tens of thousands of years. Watch the fascinating formations of  Uluru and Kata Tjuta  come alive as you listen to ancient stories passed down through the generations, and marvel at the breathtaking sight of an Uluru sunset. Continue your adventure through the Red Centre to discover other natural wonders including  Kings Canyon  and the stunning Ormiston Gorge in Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park.

Trips from 1 January 2023 onwards

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travelers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

However, we continue to strongly recommend that all Intrepid travelers and leaders get vaccinated to protect themselves and others.

Specific proof of testing or vaccination may still be required by your destination or airline. Please ensure you check travel and entry requirements carefully.

Who are the traditional owners of Uluru?

The Anangu (pronounced  arn-ung-oo ) people are the traditional owners of  Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park  and other regions of the Central Western desert.

They've been custodians of the land for over 60,000 years and are one of the world's oldest living cultures.

For the Anangu people, Uluru and Kata Tjuta are places of deep spiritual connection; they are physical evidence of Tjukurpa (the creation period) and the ancestral spirits who reside in the land.

How do I get to Uluru?

All of our Uluru trips start in Yulara (a resort town on the outskirts of  Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park ) or Alice Springs. The quickest way to get to Uluru is to fly to Yulara. You can fly direct from a few Australian cities including Melbourne, Sydney and Cairns with Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia.

You can fly direct to Alice Springs from most major Australian cities including Brisbane, Darwin and Adelaide (flights are generally more frequent from Alice than Yulara). From here, it's a 288 miles (5.5 hours) drive to Uluru.

If your tour finishes in Yulara, we can drop you off in Alice Springs (at no additional cost), with an arrival back in town at around 6:30 pm.

Is climbing Uluru banned?

Yes, climbing Uluru was banned permanently on 26 October 2019 to respect the traditional owners and the  spiritual significance  of the site. The Anangu people have been holding spiritual and cultural ceremonies at Uluru for tens of thousands of years, and climbing is not generally allowed under Tjukurpa (Anangu law and culture). We think the views are better from down below, anyway.

Can I drink tap water in the Red Centre?

Yes, drinking tap water is safe in Alice Springs, Yulara and throughout the Red Centre. Ensure you bring a 1-2 liter reusable water bottle to refill at the water stations dotted around Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park. Staying hydrated is important as the Outback sun is intense and you'll be doing a fair bit of walking during the day.

Are there ATMs in the Red Centre?

You can withdraw cash at a number of ATMs in Alice Springs. There's also an ATM in the Town Square at Ayers Rock Resort in Yulara. Most of the highway roadhouses will have an ATM or the option to get cashback.

What should I pack for Uluru?

Layering is key in the Outback. The days are warm or hot all year so t-shirts and shorts are fine, however the temperature can drop at night so you'll need long pants and a warm sweater and/or jacket for sunrise and sunset. You’ll also need a comfy pair of walking shoes, a wide-brimmed sun hat, a day pack, sunscreen, lip balm and a reusable water bottle.

When's the best time to visit Uluru?

Uluru is awe-inspiring come rain or shine, but the best time to visit is generally between May and September when the days are dry and warm (but not scorching). Uluru sits in a semi-arid desert climate zone, so summer is sweltering with occasional storms (the amount of rainfall varies from year to year), while winter is warm and dry during the day with cold nighttime temps that often plummet below zero.

Is Uluru also called Ayers Rock?

You may have heard Australia's most famous landmark also being called Ayers Rock. However, the traditional custodians of Uluru, the Anangu people, have always called it Uluru. The first non-Aboriginal person to see Uluru was explorer William Gosse in 1873. He named it Ayers Rock in honor of his superior Sir Henry Ayers, the Chief Secretary of South Australia.

The rock was officially renamed Ayers Rock / Uluru in 1993, but it was renamed again in 2002 to Uluru / Ayers Rock to show respect for the Anangu people and acknowledge their custodianship of the land. We use the traditional name for this reason, and you'll also see the traditional name used throughout the national park.

The word 'Uluru' comes from the Pitjantjatjara language and has no direct English translation.

How will we travel around the Red Centre?

The Red Centre covers a huge, very remote area of Central Australia. We'll spend many hours driving from A to B in an air-conditioned vehicle. Make sure you bring ample snacks and maybe a few podcasts to listen to – or use it as an opportunity to get to know your fellow travelers. With a comfortable, air-conditioned bus, sit back and enjoy the unique desert landscapes that you'd miss in any other form of travel.

What's the accommodation like?

It depends on the trip style you choose. Our Basix and Original trips feature simple (but comfy) camping accommodation in permanent or semi-permanent tents with stretcher beds and shared facilities, or a mixture of camping and budget hotels.

If you choose a Comfort or Premium trip, you'll stay in 3-to-4-star hotels and resorts with private amenities.

Can I use my cell phone at Uluru?

Cell phone and data signal within Ayers Rock Resort and Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is pretty good (Ayers Rock Resort also offers free Wi-Fi). You can usually pick up a few bars at the roadhouses, too, although some network providers tend to be better than others.

Expect the signal to be patchy or completely cut off when you're on the road or exploring more remote places like Kings Canyon or Tjoritja/West MacDonnell National Park. But hey, with views like these, we don't think you'll mind switching off for a few days.

Do I need to bring cash?

You can use a credit or debit card for purchases in most roadhouses, shops and restaurants in the Red Centre. However, it's always handy to have cash for smaller purchases.

You might also want to withdraw money if you're interested in buying artwork from local First Nations artists. Artists often sell beautiful, hand-painted tapestries in the gardens near Town Square in Ayers Rock Resort, and at the sunset viewing area. It's a great way to take a little piece of Uluru home with you.

What are some interesting facts about Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park?

  • The formations are approximately 500 million years old
  • The rock (Uluru) you see is only the tip of the, er, monolith. The rock mass extends up to 6 kilometers underground
  • Uluru is 348 meters tall (for reference, that's taller than the Eiffel Tower in Paris, the Chrysler Building in New York or the Eureka Tower in Melbourne)
  • The circumference of Uluru is 9.4 km and it takes around 3 to 4 hours to walk depending on your fitness level
  • The traditional owners of Uluru and Kata Tjuta are the Anangu people
  • Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park is home to over 400 plant species and 21 species of mammals
  • The rocks get their orangey-red color from the oxidized iron minerals

Are there things I can't do at Uluru?

Uluru is often referred to as the spiritual heart of Australia, not only because of its middle-of-the-country location but also for its great significance to Australia’s First Nations people (and more specifically to the Anangu, the traditional owners of Uluru). And for this reason, there are restrictions on what you can and can't do at Uluru. These restrictions include taking photos at sacred sites, swimming in waterholes around the base, and not calling Uluru by its colonized name, Ayers Rock.

Are Intrepid trips accessible for travelers with disabilities?

We are committed to making travel widely  accessible , regardless of ability or disability. We do our best to help you see the world, regardless of physical or mental limitations.

We are always happy to talk to travelers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Uluru is the heart of Australia and represents so much about this country; its size, its beauty and its culture. Shortly after you arrive, the unmistakable Uluru will emerge from the earth as one giant boulder. Walk off your lunch at Kata Tjuta. With its 36 various-sized domes, it provides quite a contrast to Uluru. You’ll get to know the landscape pretty well on an afternoon hike between the domes.

As the evening unfolds, enjoy a light snack as the sun slowly sets casting a variety of earthy tones across Uluru. The perfect end to a remarkable day is awaiting you back at camp, as you enjoy a delicious spread of food with your group. If the weather permits, sit outside under the stars.

An early start this morning is rewarded with an Uluru sunrise and the sun hits the icon like a beacon, before it floods across the undulating landscape. While the morning is fresh, enjoy a walk around the base of Uluru taking in all of the textures and valleys which isn’t evident from afar. Once you’ve had lunch, perhaps purchase some art and craft created by First Peoples of Australia, at the Cultural Centre. Travel onto our exclusive campsite near the Watarrka National Park (Kings Canyon), where the group will eat and sleep in your swag under the stars.

Uluru is considered a living cultural landscape and home to the spirits of the ancestors making it a sacred place for the Anangu peoples. The Anangu people have dissuaded visitors from climbing Uluru for decades; as traditional owners of the land they feel a deep responsibility for everyone who travels to the area. In 1998, Adventure Tours Australia were among the first tour operators to stop climbing Uluru. We are proud to be involved with local communities in Uluru, and to have an ongoing commitment in contributing to employment for the Anangu people.

The main attraction of Watarrka National Park is undoubtedly Kings Canyon – a humungous gorge enclosed by sheer rock walls many meters high. With its porous sandstone, deep gullies and hidden rock pools, it provides shelter to more than 600 species of native plants and animals. Your guide will point these out on a trek that takes in the canyon’s most famous locations – the Lost City, the Garden of Eden, Amphitheatre, and of course North & South Walls. After lunch, we hit the road again for a three-hour drive to Yulara in the late afternoon. Tonight, you have choice to enjoy one of the following optional activities; a Sunset Camel Cruise, the Field of Lights, Sounds of Silence, the Wintjiri Wiru Drone display; or if you’d like to experience the Uluru sunset from a different perspective (and free of charge), tonight is the opportunity to do it! After dinner, relax at your camp for a night under the stars.

Tour: 4-Day 4WD Camping Tour: Uluru, Kata Tjuta and Kings Canyon Duration: 4 days Commences: Alice Springs, Australia Price: AUD $1050.00 Reviews: Read reviews Further information on travel dates, pricing and options available here .

Day 1: Alice Springs — Uluru (L, D) Enjoy pickup from your Alice Springs or Ayers Rock (Uluru) accommodation (or Ayers Rock Airport if flying directly into Uluru), then spend the afternoon visiting the Uluru Cultural Centre to learn about the traditional legends and culture of Uluru’s Aboriginal people. Take a guided base walk around Ayers Rock to learn more about the spiritual significance of Uluru. It’s possible to climb Uluru (weather permitting), but as it’s a sacred site, the Anangu, Uluru’s indigenous custodians, respectfully ask visitors not to climb the rock. At sunset, sip sparkling wine while enjoying the magnificent sight of the sun setting over Uluru. Complete your first night in the outback with a delicious meal shared around the campfire, then sleep under the stars in your bedroll swag or in one of the campsite’s permanent tents.

Overnight: campsite in Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park Day 2: Uluru — Kata Tjuta – Kings Creek (B, L, D) Wake up early to travel to a lookout near your campsite and begin the day with the majestic sight of the sun rising over Uluru and the red rock domes of Kata Tjuta. Enjoy breakfast at the campsite, then head off to Kata Tjuta for a 4.5-mile (7-kilometer) hike through the Valley of the Winds. After lunch, travel to Curtin Springs Cattle Station to experience life on a traditional working cattle station. Then soak up the outback serenity of your private campsite at Kings Creek Station, and enjoy dinner around the campfire under the clear southern skies.

Overnight: campsite in Kings Creek Station Day 3: Kings Creek — Watarrka National Park (B, L, D) After breakfast at your campsite, take a guided walk around Kings Canyon (also known by its Aboriginal name, Watarrka). Admire the natural rock formations, including the Amphitheater and Lost City, then take a bumpy 4WD ride into Aboriginal country along the unsealed Mereenie Loop Road, keeping an eye out for wildlife along the way. Spend the night at the Glen Helen campsite, near a waterhole that the traditional landowners believe is home to an ancient and powerful Rainbow Serpent. Enjoy another meal around the campfire and a night under the stars.

Overnight: campsite in Watarrka National Park Day 4: Watarrka National Park — Alice Springs (B, L) Travel off-road after breakfast at your campsite, heading for the West MacDonnell Ranges. Look for massive perentie goanna lizards at Ormiston Gorge, and cool off with a swim in the rock pools. Enjoy a 20-minute ‘Ghost Gum Walk’ to capture the sights and perfumes of the outback, then relax on the trip back to Alice Springs, arriving in the city in the late afternoon.

Our Red Centre tour begins by heading south to Erldunda travelling through the Waterhouse and James Ranges with a stop at the Camel Farm for refreshments and a camel ride if you're keen (own expense). Stop at Mount Ebenezer Roadhouse to view and shop for Aboriginal art. On the way to Uluru, we stop to view Atila (Mount Connor), a mesa tableland and the first significant rock formation of our Outback tour.

After a stop for lunch and our arrival at the Uluru-Kata Tjuta National Park, we head to the Cultural Centre to learn about the local Aboriginal law and religion (Tjukurpa) before a short, guided walk at the base of Uluru.

The French diplomat Marquis de Custine commented that it combined "the scales of a golden fish, the enamelled skin of a serpent, the changeful hues of the lizard, the glossy rose and azure of the pigeon's neck" and wondered at "the men who go to worship God in this box of confectionery work".
  • - Walk by Lobnoye Mesto (literally meaning "Execution Place", or "Place of Skulls"), once Ivan the Terrible's stage for religious ceremonies, speeches, and important events.
  • - Entering the Alexander Garden , you’ll take in spectacular views of Russian architecture from ancient to Soviet times, as well as the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier with an eternal flame. Watch Changing of the Guard Ceremony every hour in summer and every half an hour in winter.

Kitai-gorod:

Stroll along medieval Kitai-gorod with its strong ancient Russia feel, known for its bohemian lifestyle, markets and arts.

  • - Nikolskaya Street. Here you will find the Russia's first publishing house, the second oldest monastery, and Ferryn Pharmacy, known as the number one pharmacy back in Soviet times and famous for its Empire-style architecture.
  • - Ilinka Street. The financial street of the Kitaigorod (China Town) district, where you’ll find the Gostiny Dvor (Merchant’s Yard), which is now a showroom for Ferraris and Maseratis. The street was designed in the 1790s by Catherine the Great.
  • - Varvarka street. The oldest street in Moscow, which dates back to the 14th century, and still has remnants of early Muscovite architecture, such as the Old English Court and the Palace of the Romanov’s.
  • - Kamergersky Lane. Only a small road of about 250 meters, it is home to some of the oldest artifacts of the city, as each building holds a fascinating story. Some of Russia's most famous writers, poets, and composers from as far back as the Golden Age of Russian culture, have lived or worked on this lane.

Historic City Center

Walk the historical old center of Moscow with its cool local vibe, including the main Tverskaya street , and indulge in desserts in the first grocery “Eliseev's store” , housed in an 18th century neoclassical building, famous for its baroque interior and decoration.

From our tour. Impressions of our American tourist:

At 3:30, as energy flagged, lunch was on the agenda at a Ukrainian restaurant.  Just in time!  We asked our guide to order for us.  We all had the same thing....borscht (the Ukrainian version has beans and more tomatoes than the Russian version, which has more beets and includes beef).

The special high bread served is called galushki.  Our main course was golubtsy...a dish of minced meat rolled in braised cabbage leaves.  Both dishes called for optional sour cream as a topping....of course, yes, please....I recommend it.

Full, satisfied, and completely refreshed, it was off to Red Square and St. Basil's and GUM department store.  Red Square is not so named because of the color of the brick walls of the Kremlin.  Rather the word for 'red' and the word for 'beautiful' are similar in pronunciation....and, there you have it.

As we made the turn by the National Museum in front of which is the mounted sculpture of the "Marshall of Victory," Giorgy Zhukov from WWII and caught our first view of St. Basil's, my friend and I simultaneously emitted "Oooohhhhh!"  There it was....the iconic onion domes of St. Basil's!  Hooray....it was open until 7....we had about 30 minutes and were allowed in, AND we could take photos with no flash.

Now, I can give you a taste of what we saw in the other cathedrals in Cathedral Square.  What we learned is that St. Vasily and St. Basil are one in the same....Russian/English.  He was a common man who wandered Moscow unclothed and barefoot.  But, all, even Ivan the Terrible, heeded his opinions derived from his visions.  Ivan had this cathedral built over his tomb.

As we exited and took photos up close of the onion domes, Inna presented us with chocolate (how did she know we were ready for another energy boost, and we each got a big piece of chocolate.  The baby's name pictured on the wrapper of this famous Russian chocolate is Alyonka....the Russian Gerber baby, don't you think?

One could wear out the credit card in GUM's (capitalized because it is actually a government abbreviation), but the 'kitty' and my credit card stayed in my pocket as we strolled through the glass-topped arcade.

We then strolled through some of Moscow's lovely pedestrian streets; paused to listen as a wonderful quartet performed Vivaldi's "Four Seasons" in an underground passage to cross the busy street (hooray!....we DID have our 'classical concert' experience after all; a request Alina tried in vain to fill because none was scheduled those days), saw the Bolshoi, which means 'big' (my friend has yet to recover that their performance schedule did not coincide with our cruise), saw the Central Telegraph Building, dating from the 1930's, and made our way to the Ritz-Carlton to see the night view of Moscow from the rooftop bar, called O2.

There were fleece blankets to wrap yourself in....yes, it got that cold when the sun set.  We each ordered something hot to drink...the ginger, mint, lemon tea served to me in a parfait glass (for 600 rubles...about $9....you pay for the view here!) was delightful and hit the spot perfectly.  It was time to call it a night....
