The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card is considered to be one of Canada’s higher end travel credit cards, even though its annual fee makes it quite affordable. With easy earning potential, a flexible rewards program, and a generous insurance package, it’s definitely worth considering if you are a frequent traveller.

The travel perks and benefits aren’t quite as inclusive as other high-end credit cards. The absence of lounge access is a big one to note. Another downside is that the points cannot be converted into other rewards programs. That being said, for its price point, it’s quite competitive and still gives good value.

  • Get an Annual Fee Rebate for the first year†. To receive the first-year annual fee rebate for the Primary Cardholder, you must activate your Card and make your first Purchase on the Account within the first 3 months after Account opening. To receive the first Additional Cardholder first-year annual fee rebate, you must add your first Additional Cardholder by June 4, 2024.
  • Cardholders will earn points for every dollar spent with accelerated rates on groceries, restaurants, recurring bill payments and travel booked through Expedia® For TD.
  • Cardholders will benefit from an annual $100 travel credit when they book travel through Expedia® For TD as well as an annual birthday bonus of up to 10,000 TD Rewards Points.
  • Cardholders can redeem points for a range of options at any time as long as they have at least 200 TD points available.

Earning Rewards

Earning rewards with the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card is easy as you can earn on every purchase you make. Travel booked through Expedia For TD will earn you 8 TD rewards points per dollar spent. Eligible grocery and restaurant purchases will earn you 6 TD rewards points for every dollar spent. If you set up regularly recurring bill payments to your account you will earn 4 TD rewards points for every dollar spent. Meanwhile, all other purchases will earn 2 TD rewards points per dollar spent. Note that there is an annual spending cap of $25,000 for the accelerated categories. If you exceed the spending cap you will then earn 2 TD rewards points for every dollar spent.

Redeeming Rewards

Rewards can be redeemed at any point, in increments of 200 points. You can redeem them for options such as travel (you’ll get the best rewards value if you book through Expedia For TD), Amazon purchases, gift cards, cash credits, and education credits. Redeeming points is easy and the multiple rewards options are attractive. However, some other top-tier credit cards allow you to convert points to other programs like airline or hotel partners for more flexibility which this card is lacking.

Rewards Potential

Cardholders will get the best value for their points by booking travel through Expedia For TD. However, if you are someone who likes to book directly with hotels or airlines to get status points then it’s not the best rewards potential out there, since booking outside of Expedia For TD lowers the value of your points. With Expedia for TD, 200 points are equal to dollar. For travel booked outside of Expedia For TD, you need 250 points for that same dollar value.

That said, based on average Canadian spending, Forbes Advisor estimates this card could earn $127.34 in rewards value per year with Expedia and $111.67 with other travel partners (both calculations factor in the cost of the annual fee).

  • Comprehensive travel insurance coverage.
  • Discounts on car rentals with Avis and Budget Rent-A-Car.
  • Link your card to Starbucks Rewards to earn 50% more TD points and Starbucks Rewards on Starbucks purchases.

Interest Rates

  • Regular APR: 20.99%
  • Cash Advance APR: 22.99%
  • Foreign Transaction Fee: 2.50%
  • Annual Fee: $139 (Get an annual fee rebate in the first year; account must be approved by June 3, 2024)
  • Any other fees:  Additional cardholder $50.00 (To receive the first Additional Cardholder first-year annual fee rebate, you must add your first Additional Cardholder by June 4, 2024)

TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card vs. TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Infinite* Privilege

While both travel cards, the TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite is a luxury travel card. The annual fee is a hefty $599, but it comes with considerably more perks and benefits. including lounge access and NEXUS card rebates. It also uses Aeroplan rewards rather than TD rewards. The TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite is a strong card, but it’s best for those who travel frequently and can offset the cost of the card with the included benefits.

TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card vs. Scotiabank Scene+ Visa Card for Students

Students studying away from home may consider a travel card like the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite Card to help offset the cost of flights home. However, with the annual fee and rewards earning potential, you might be better off sticking to a $0 annual fee card geared towards student spending. The Scotiabank Scene+ Visa card for students allows you to earn points that can be used for day-to-day expenses like dining out, entertainment and even banking.

TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card vs. TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum* Card

With an annual fee of $89, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum is a bit more affordable. The earn rates aren’t as high, but it’s also a different rewards program. While TD Rewards points are best with Expedia, Aeroplan points are best with Air Canada. So your choice between these two cards should depend on who you are most likely to book travel with to get the best value for your points.

When determining a rating for individual credit cards, the Forbes Advisor Canada editorial team factors in an exhaustive list of data points. With the TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite*, the scoring model used takes into account factors such as, but not limited to, rewards rates and categories, fees, welcome bonuses and other benefits and features. Keep in mind, what may be best for some people might not be right for you. Conduct informed research before deciding which cards will best help you achieve your financial goals.

The TD First Class Travel ® Visa Infinite* Card is a decent travel card . It’s easy to earn and redeem points and the suite of travel insurance is a huge perk. However, it has the best value for those who like to book their travel via Expedia. If you prefer to book directly with hotels or airlines or via other travel portals, then there are better travel credit cards out there where your rewards will go further.

TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card Review

Review of td's entry/mid-level aeroplan co-brand credit card.

Last Updated on March 19, 2024

In its current form, the TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card has been around since the new Aeroplan program was revealed in November of 2020. This card is considered TD's entry to mid level Aeroplan co-brand card that is the stepping stone to eventually getting one of the higher end premium or ultra premium Aeroplan cards that TD offers.

  • Features & Benefits

What is good about this card

What is not so good about this card, who should get this card.

The TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card is a card targeted towards Canadians who want to collect Aeroplan points on their everyday purchases but may not meet the requirements for one of the premium or ultra premium Aeroplan co-brand cards. The card provides increased Aeroplan earn rates on Air Canada purchases as well as on grocery and gas purchases. It also has preferred pricing on Air Canada award flights and a good insurance coverage package.

Costs & Sign up Features

The TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card has an $89 primary card annual fee while supplementary/additional cards are $39 each. If you have a TD All Inclusive Bank account you can have the annual fees rebated on the cards.

Currently the card has a welcome bonus of up to 20,000 Aeroplan Points plus no annual fee in the first year. We value the 20,000 Aeroplan Points at no less than $300 but they are typically worth much more than that. The 20,000 points offer ends September 3, 2024. This offer is not available for residents of Quebec. For Quebec residents, please click here .

Here is how you can earn the current welcome bonus points offer:

  • Earn a welcome bonus of 10,000 Aeroplan points when you make your first purchase with your new card†
  • Earn an additional 10,000 Aeroplan points when you spend $1,000 within 90 days of Account opening†

The interest rate on the card is 20.99% on purchases. 22.99% on cash advances and balance transfers. These rates are equivalent to or below many cards at this level. There are no minimum annual income requirements for this card.

The card earns Aeroplan points as follows

  • 1 points per eligible dollar spent Air Canada Purchases (includes Air Canada Vacations ), Grocery purchases and Gas Station purchases†
  • 1 point per $1.50 pent on all other spending†
  • 50% bonus points at Starbucks when you link your TD card with your Starbucks® Rewards account.

Point Valuation Chart

This is where the strength of the Air Canada Aeroplan program comes through and makes the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card shine. Aeroplan offers numerous redemption options but being a frequent flyer program the primary redemption option is reward flights on Air Canada and Aeroplan partner airlines. Overall you can redeem Aeroplan points to well over 1,300 destinations Worldwide which is one of the reasons Aeroplan is so popular.

The new Aeroplan program has done away with their standard award charts (Classic Flights) that were the norm with the program since its inception in the 1980s. That being said, for travel on Air Canada, they do provide a range of points you could expect to redeem for flights on Air Canada with the claim that approximately 80% of redemptions will fall in that range but 20% could end up being less or more than what is published. Essentially what Air Canada has done is made the old Market Fare awards (any available seat at any time for a dynamic range of points) as their standard redemption model now for Air Canada flights. Flights on partner airlines will still follow a fixed price reward chart model. You can see all the redemption values in this PDF here .

What hasn't changed in the Aeroplan program is the ability to redeem for Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First Class flights. With the latter three tending to provide outsized value when you compare to any other loyalty program in the market. Speaking of premium flights, just in case you didn't know you can redeem Aeroplan points to fly in Etihad's ultra luxurious Apartment first class seats.

And the great news with the TD Aeroplan card (or any Aeroplan co-brand card) is that you receive preferred award pricing when you redeem points for flights. This discount varies by route, date, time etc. but we have seen it in the 10 to 30% range. The discount gets slightly bigger if you have Air Canada elite status but that only adds a few percentage points to the overall discount - the biggest portion does come from having the credit card.

On top of all this the new Aeroplan program no longer has to those dreaded carrier surcharges that could run into hundreds and sometimes thousands of dollars. While the surcharges have been done away on all airlines Aeroplan does charge a reasonable $39 fee for booking flights on partner airlines. The removal of the surcharges does however translate into an average higher cost in points for a lot of the redemption options albeit in many of our searches the increase in points is much less than what you used to have to pay for those surcharges.

We didn't want to make this review go on forever so we have kept the redemption section to a very top level description however it you want to learn more about redeeming for flights with the Aeroplan program we recommend reading the following articles:

  • The New Air Canada Aeroplan program is now live
  • A guide to the new Air Canada Aeroplan program flight reward redemption process
  • The new Air Canada Aeroplan reward flight pricing compared: no status no credit card pricing versus elite status + credit card Preferred pricing

Finally you are also able to redeem Aeroplan points for non-flight rewards including hotels, car rentals, Air Canada Vacations packages, gift cards (soon to be electronic only so you'll get them right away!), merchandise (the catalog is being expanded greatly thanks to partnerships with new retailers) and more.

Features and Benefits

As it is an entry level card, the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Visa Card doesn't provide many benefits and additional features. The only extra benefit it has are the aforementioned preferred pricing on Aeroplan reward flights and extra points for Starbucks purchases.

The TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum Card has quite good insurance coverage for a card that is only $89 per year. The coverage is as follows:

  • Common Carrier Travel Accident Insurance
  • Flight Delay Insurance
  • Baggage Delay Insurance
  • Lost or Stolen Baggage Insurance
  • Car Rental Theft and Damage Insurance (48 days; up to $65,000 MSRP)
  • Hotel Burglary Insurance
  • Purchase Security
  • Extended warranty

Recommended reading: The New Aeroplan credit cards compared

By far the best thing about this card is the value that the Aeroplan points earned can be worth. As with most frequent flyer programs there is the potential for some outsized value when you redeem for flights. This is especially true for when you redeem for business class or first class flights on Air Canada or Air Canada's partner airlines. Rarely will a premium class redemption fall below 2 cents per point in value and in fact economy class redemptions can earn run up to a 2% value.

The preferred pricing discount on Aeroplan’s dynamic flight award pricing for travel on Air Canada. Cardholders can typically save between 10 and 30% of the number of points required on Air Canada award flights compared to those who do not hold Aeroplan co-brand cards.

The insurance coverage package is quite good for a card that only charges $89 per year.

The base earn rate of 1 Aeroplan point for $1.50 in spending is on the low and not so good. While our valuation puts that at a 1% value (based on 1.5 cents per point) some people won't be able to achieve that. Not only that, it means you have to spend more compared to other cards to earn a meaningful amount of points.

Outside of the base earn rate, most of what is not so good lies more with Aeroplan than the card itself. There is less flexibility when it comes to economy class flights when you compare Aeroplan to many of the proprietary credit card reward programs. Some of the other top programs allow you to book flights on any airline at anytime including low cost airlines such as Flair Airlines. With this card you are strictly limited to redeeming on Air Canada and their partner airlines.

Although you have access to any available seat at any time you are still competing for a more finite amount of seats and routes when compared to any airline any flight credit card programs. Want to redeem for travel during Christmas season? You'll be up against a lot of other Aeroplan members and regular revenue ticket buyers which will most likely bump up the cost in points for those flights. That's the one downfall there is the potential to have to spend a lot of Aeroplan points for the redemption you want due to the dynamic pricing of reward flights (but on the flip side it can be the opposite)

  • Those who have Aeroplan as the primary reward program but don't need or don't want the benefits of the premium or ultra premium Aeroplan cards
  • Those who have Aeroplan as the primary reward program but don't meet the income requirements to get the premium or ultra premium Aeroplan cards
  • Aeroplan members looking to take advantage of the preferred points pricing on Air Canada flight awards
  • People who bank with TD and have the All Inclusive banking plan as that will pay for the annual fee on the card

If you are in the market for an entry to mid-level Aeroplan co-brand card the TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum card is one to consider. The one to one earn rate in select categories combined with the preferred pricing on Air Canada award tickets and relatively strong insurance coverage make this card ideal if you are just starting out with Aeroplan and/or the world of airline and travel loyalty programs.

Once your income is higher or you get more comfortable with the ins and outs of the Aeroplan program you can look at getting yourself a premium or ultra premium Aeroplan co-brand card to earn more points on your spending and avail of all the extra benefits like getting your first checked bag free on Air Canada flights.

TD® Aeroplan® Visa Platinum* Card

travel insurance coverage with td aeroplan visa

Application must be approved by September 3, 2024 to receive this offer

Signup bonus:, annual fee:, interest rates:, earning rate:, perks & benefits:.

For those after benefits like preferred pricing on Air Canada ® Aeroplan redemptions, but don’t want to pay a high annual fee, the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum * Card represents a solid option, with a decent welcome bonus to boot.

Bonuses & Fees

As TD’s entry-level Aeroplan co-branded credit card, the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum * Card currently offers 20,000 Aeroplan points as a signup bonus, structured as follows:

  • 10,000 Aeroplan points upon first purchase †
  • 10,000 Aeroplan points upon spending $1,000 within 90 days of opening the account †

The annual fee of $89 is also rebated for the first year. † Note that in order to receive the first-year annual fee rebate, you must activate your card and make your first purchase on the account within the first three months after account opening, and you must add any additional cardholders by September 4, 2024.

That’s on the higher end of historical offers we’ve seen on this card, so now is a great time to apply.

As a lower-end Visa Platinum * product, this card’s annual fee is relatively affordable at $89. For this offer, the annual fee is rebated for the first year; otherwise, holding TD’s All-Inclusive Banking Plan can also waive the annual fee on this card on an ongoing basis.

If you choose to sign up for the card, take note that the annual fee for the first supplementary cardholder is also rebated for the first year, which is usually $39. †

To be eligible for this offer, you must apply and be approved for the card by September 3, 2024.

Earning Rewards

In terms of the returns on everyday spending, the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum * Card offers cardholders the following:

  • 1 Aeroplan point † per dollar spent on eligible Air Canada ® , Air Canada Vacations ® , gas, and grocery purchases †
  • 1 Aeroplan point † for every $1.5 spent  on all other eligible purchases †

The TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum * Card is best-suited for those who are interested in collecting Aeroplan points while building up a relatively new credit file, or restricting themselves to lower annual fees and credit limits.

I wouldn’t recommend putting your daily spending on this card if you qualify for a card with a better earning rate; however, it’s a decent option to get in the door with Aeroplan and TD.

Redeeming Rewards

Aeroplan remains the program of choice for the vast majority of Canadians aiming to redeem their points for high-value international business class and First Class redemptions.

Redeeming Aeroplan points follows the Aeroplan Flight Reward Chart , and can cost as little as 55,000 points one-way from Vancouver to Tokyo in business class, for example.

From the East Coast, 60,000 Aeroplan points (or often fewer, thanks to Air Canada’s ® preferred pricing benefit if you hold Aeroplan Elite Status or a co-branded credit card ) would unlock a transatlantic flight to most parts of Western Europe.

Closer to home, short-haul flights within North America that are under 500 miles only cost as few as 6,000 Aeroplan points one-way.

With a few months of organic spending on top of the 20,000 points earned on this card, you’ll have the 25,000 points required to travel one-way in business class across the continent on routes such as Toronto – Vancouver or Montreal – Los Angeles.

travel insurance coverage with td aeroplan visa

Perks & Benefits

As an entry-level Aeroplan co-branded offering, the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum * Card offers a limited set of Air Canada ® travel benefits, including:

  • Preferred pricing when redeeming Aeroplan points for Air Canada ® flights †
  • Your Aeroplan points won’t expire for as long as you’re a cardholder †

Insurance Coverage

As a basic card, the TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum * Card’s insurance proposition is also relatively weak. Some of the provisions that it does cover include:

  • Delayed and lost baggage insurance : $1000 overall coverage per insured person towards the purchase of essentials such as clothes and toiletries if your baggage is delayed more than 6 hours or lost. †
  • Flight/trip delay insurance: Up to $500 in coverage if your flight/trip is delayed more than 4 hours. †
  • Auto rental collision/loss damage insurance: Coverage for up to 48 consecutive days for cars with an MSRP of up to $65,000, which can help you save on the insurance fees that the car rental company would otherwise charge. †

It’s important to note that these benefits would also apply on Aeroplan reward tickets, as long as you charge the taxes and fees of your booking to your TD ® Aeroplan ® Visa Platinum * Card.

However, the card does not offer emergency medical insurance or trip cancellation & trip interruption insurance, which are two very significant benefits that you’ll find on many of the higher-end products out there.

Additionally, the card also offers Purchase Security and Extended Warranty Protection, covering most eligible items you’ve purchased with your card should they be stolen or damaged within 90 days of purchase, as well as a doubled warranty period compared to the manufacturer’s warranty.

TD First Class Travel vs TD Aeroplan: How to Choose

' src=

The main difference between TD First Class Travel and TD Aeroplan is the rewards system.  Aeroplan is Air Canada’s reward program, while the TD First Class Travel card is tied to TD Rewards Points. Thinking about where you shop and how you like to redeem your points can help you decide which of these cards is the better fit.

What is TD Aeroplan?

What is td first class travel.

  • TD First Class Travel vs. TD Aeroplan: Which is better?
  • TD First Class Travel cards
  • TD Aeroplan cards

TD Aeroplan is the name given to a group of TD credit cards that earn Aeroplan points . You can use the points to buy things like flights, hotel rooms, car rentals, merchandise and more via Air Canada’s Aeroplan redemption platform.

TD offers four Aeroplan credit cards:

  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite .
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Platinum.
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Infinite Privilege.
  • TD Aeroplan Visa Business.

Did you know? TD isn’t the only issuer that works with Aeroplan. American Express and CIBC also offer Aeroplan credit cards with their own earn rates and perks.

  • Most cards include travel insurance, such as medical, baggage delay and flight cancellation.

Cons of TD Aeroplan

  • The redemption program focuses mainly on Air Canada.
  • Lower earn rates than similar cards, including the TD First Class Travel card.

TD First Class Travel is another name for one of TD’s rewards cards: the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card. It’s the only card from TD with the name First Class Travel, but not the only card that earns TD Rewards Points. The TD Platinum Travel Visa, TD Travel Rewards Visa and TD Business Travel Visa also earn TD Rewards Points.

TD First Class Travel rewards

The TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card earns between two and eight TD Rewards Points per CAD spent, depending on the purchase category.

  • 8x TD Rewards Points on travel bookings made via the Expedia for TD platform.
  • 6x TD Rewards Points on groceries and restaurants.
  • 4x TD Rewards Points on recurring bill payments.
  • 2x TD Rewards Points on everything else.

Pros of TD First Class Travel

  • High reward earn rates compared to TD Aeroplan cards.
  • Travel TD Rewards Points can be redeemed with multiple booking platforms.
  • Includes travel insurance, such as medical, baggage delay and flight cancellation.

Cons of TD First Class Travel

  • Only one First Class Travel card to choose from.
  • Highest earn rate is only for Expedia purchases.

TD First Class Travel vs TD Aeroplan: Which is better?

TD Aeroplan beats out First Class Travel when it comes to points value. Based on NerdWallet analysis, the average value of 1 Aeroplan point is worth 2.23 cents. To compare, you can expect to get around 0.25-0.5 cents per TD Rewards Point, according to NerdWallet analysis. These values depend on the redemption method you choose.

That’s not to say TD Aeroplan cards are better than the TD First Class Travel Visa Infinite card. If you don’t fly with Air Canada, for example, Aeroplan points may not be as practical. Look at features like annual fees , reward categories, redemption options, interest rates and insurance perks when making your decision.
