Princeton Travel Brush Sets Review

Planning on traveling? Got a small space to work in? We visited Neskowin Beach on the Oregon Coast for my hubby’s birthday, and I was fortunate because Princeton Artist Brush Co. recently sent me their two Princeton travel brush sets for this review.  These brush sets contain the travel version of the Neptune synthetic squirrel brushes and the Aqua Elite synthetic Kolinsky Sable brushes.

Both sets contain four round brushes in sizes 10, 8, 6 and 4, along with a carrying case that closes with a magnet.

Each set fits nicely in the hand, making them perfect for taking on such a trip. At home, they’ll be perfect for those times I’m sitting in my recliner with only my lap for a painting surface. ​

Both sets are part of Princeton’s NextGen line, brushes formulated to have the carrying capacity of natural hair with the durability and affordability of synthetic hair.

Princeton Travel Brush Sets – Look and Feel

The Neptune is a synthetic squirrel, the softest brush that Princeton carries, and the one that holds the most water.  The Aqua Elite is a synthetic Kolinsky, with each individual hair pleated like natural hair.

The travel brushes combine the look of the standard brushes in the line with metal – a rich wood tone with copper for the Neptune, and a dark gray with brushed silver for the Aqua Elite.

The handles separate into two pieces.

The brush end fits into the handle creating a capsule for storage.  As with all travel brushes in this style, some care must be taken when sliding the top over the brush. If hairs are bent backward, they will break and it is seldom possible to repair them. I clean the brush, and shape the tip while it is wet, making sure all the hairs lie close together. If I have time, I let them dry in shape before putting the tops on, so that moisture doesn’t collect in the ferrules.

When in capsule size, the travel brushes range from approximately 4 inches to 4.5 inches (10.6 cm to .11.43 cm).

When you are ready to paint, you slide the other end of the brush portion into the handle for a full-sized brush.  At full size, the brushes range from approximately 8 inches to about 6.75 inches (20.32 cm to 17.145 cm).

​​​​Princeton Travel Brushes – Performance

The biggest question you probably have is ‘How do these two sets compare?’

The cases are the same.   Both types of brush have the same hair and performance as the standard Neptune and Aqua Elite brushes, although the balance is a bit different.  I was a bit leery about the shape, but found it fit nicely in my hand, and the metal is so light that the balance was almost perfect for me.  Effects that required holding the brush in the middle or above were harder to do, but I seldom need to do that.

Synthetic or natural hair – which is best? Natural animal hair still performs better, and with the proper care will last longer.  It also costs more (a lot more) and it comes from an animal, which is an ethical issue for many.

A good brush has hairs that don’t shed (except for mop brushes), a ferrule that fits the handle tightly, and is capable of holding and evenly releasing a good amount of water and pigment.

Both the Neptune and the Aqua Elite are GOOD synthetic-hair brushes.  They’re my favorites, but let’s look at their characteristics so you can decide if they might be yours.

Princeton gives the Neptune a stiffness rating of 1 and recommends it for watercolor only. They give the Aqua Elite a stiffness rating of 2, recommending it highly for watercolor, and okay for oil paint.   And that means what? Stiffness affects how much snap and spring a brush has and that affects how long you can paint before your brush loses shape and how well the hairs will stay together as you twist and turn the brush.

Most people have a definite preference for how stiff a brush should be.  I prefer a softer brush, though I often move to a stiffer one for the last small details in a painting.

You test for this by gently bending the hairs on a dry brush, to see how well they snap back into shape.

The Neptune has almost no snap.  It is very like the brushes used for Chinese Brush Painting in this respect (though there are other differences between the two).

The Aqua Elite has plenty of snap, returning to shape almost immediately.   

Here you can see the difference in how well the two brushes returned to shape. Snap gives your first clue about the way a brush will paint, but spring is even more important.

Spring describes how well the hairs of a brush hold shape when you are painting with a wet brush. This is probably the characteristic that makes the biggest difference between natural hair and synthetic. 

To make it easier for you to focus on the brush tips,  I only used water in this test.  I did twists and turns and varied the pressure. You can see it easier in the video.

The Neptune has good spring.  It holds together well if you keep the pressure light and even.  When the hairs do separate, it tends to divide into two or three clumps.  As long as the brush is wet, it returns to shape once you lessen the pressure.

 The Aqua Elite has good spring.  However, when it splays, the hairs separate in a more fan-like pattern.  I think this may be the biggest difference between the two brushes.  The hairs also return quickly to shape once the pressure is decreased, but you’ll get a different kind of mark that you do with the Neptune.

Pressure, and where you hold the brush is key.  I found with practice I had few problems with splaying, and I could even use it for special effects.  But it did take practice.

‘Thirsty’ is a term that refers to how much water/paint a brush will soak up.  If you put a damp brush into wet paint, the brush will soak up some of the color.  This is good when you deliberately want to lighten the color.  It can be a problem if you are trying to put more color down.

The Aqua Elite has good wicking capabilities.

The Neptune is Princeton’s most ‘thirsty’ brush.  That means it will soak up more color.

In my example, the two brushes soaked up about the same amount of color, but the Neptune picks up more.

CARRYING CAPACITY AND RELEASE

Because the Neptune has such dark hairs, I couldn’t get a good photo to show this.  Both brushes have great carrying capacity.  The Neptune does carry more.

Release refers to how evenly a brush will let go of all that water it has soaked up.  Both of these brushes have good release, but when you change the pressure, more water is released.  If your pressure is uneven as you paint, your color will be uneven as well.

The Princeton Neptune and Aqua Elite Travel sets include four rounds brushes in sizes 10, 8, 6 and 4.  The metal handles can be fitted together to create either a full-length brush or a capsule size for storage.   The leather-like carrying case have a magnetic snap. They fit in the hand when closed, but can be folded into a stand for the brushes.

The Neptune handles much like a Chinese painting brush. It may be difficult (but not impossible) to get detail, definition and truly dark colors. But for exactly the same reasons, it will be easy to get softly blended colors, flowing effects, and glowing transparency.   The Elite gives better detail, definition and darker color. It will also give you softly blended colors, drippy effects and glowing transparency, but not as easily as the Neptune. The Elite would probably be better for a beginner who wants to experiment with a wider range of effects.

They’re neat, they’re elegant, and they’re ready to travel when you are!

I did a good portion of this review while vacationing at the Oregon Coast.  One night there was the most gorgeous sunset – all orange and blues.  Now, orange and blue are complementary, and they glow when put next to each other.  Mixing them gives you mud.  I painted in fading light, and could barely see my colors by the time I was done.

I decided to add some shine by scraping, so I pulled the handle end off the brush, and use the edge of the hollow to scrape with.  Handy for a travel set!

After the sunset was over, I went inside and did another quick painting from memory, again using the Neptune set.

I did this Mandrill on a rough surface watercolor postcard.  These guys have rather wiry hair and the Aqua Elite brush was perfect for the textural effects.

Fall 2024 courses offering an international travel opportunity

From Ethiopia to France, Princeton students can enroll in courses that offer an opportunity to travel abroad with their classmates over fall break. The courses are offered through multiple departments, each having a unique structure. 

In Fall 2024, students will have access to at least five courses that travel internationally: ANT 437, ART 456, HUM 417, FRE 217, and HIS 461. All of these courses have required applications. The classes analyzed were found by searching the words “travel” and “trip” on the Registrar’s course offerings website.

“The practice of dislocating and defamiliarizing one’s view on the question of the global by engaging deeply with another site is invaluable,” Professor Irene Small wrote to The Daily Princetonian. Additionally, Small, whose course ART 456: Contemporary Art: The World Picture travels to Italy, emphasized the importance of expanding one’s global perspective through travel. “Academics are only one part of what makes up a person and their life perspective, and travel often allows for these other elements to come into play within our discussions.”

Beyond the arts, FRE 217: Revisiting Paris includes a mandatory trip to Paris, France. Professor André Benhaïm started teaching this course 15 years ago. He includes an application “to make sure that students are motivated or have the right motivations to take the course, not just for the travel component itself.” This course examines the real lives of contemporary Paris, as an urban space, an object of representation, and part of French cultural identity.

Benhaïm hopes that while in Paris, his students will engage in personal projects, which will be determined and discussed prior to the trip. 

“I had a very wide range of personal projects,” Benhaïm said. “One student who was interested in the sciences decided to look at the museums that focus on different sciences.” 

ANT 437: Gaming Blackness: The Anthropology of Video Games and Race includes a mandatory trip to Tokyo, Japan. The course is taught by Professor Akil Fletcher, and is focused on Black experiences within U.S. and Japanese media, with a particular emphasis on video games.

ANT 437 was previously offered Fall 2023 and received perfect ratings in each category, with reviews urging students to take the course. “Favorite class this semester,” one student wrote in their evaluation. 

Several courses offered with travel components have high course ratings. HUM 417: Historical Structures: Ancient Architecture’s Materials, Construction and Engineering includes a trip to Athens, Greece. The course was offered Fall 2022 and received a 4.7 average rating .

“This was one of my favorite courses I have taken at Princeton,” wrote one student in their course review.

Finally, HIS 461: History of Coffee in Africa and the Middle East includes a mandatory trip to Ethiopia. This new course, taught by Professor Lacy Feigh, will be “visiting farmers and a washing station, and talking with people who are at the heart of the coffee production process in southern Ethiopia,” Feigh said.

Feigh’s application to the course ensures the limited spots go to those not just interested in coffee and travel, but also with interests in Ethiopia, African history, and the Middle East.

“My hope is to bring together people who are interested in both to liven the conversations throughout the semester,” Feigh said.

Travel for these courses is free for enrolled students. The ‘Prince’ analyzed the minimum amount the University will spend transporting students.

Applications for some courses are due before course enrollment, which takes place April 16 to 18. Others have applications due after course selection and will be returned before add/drop begins on April 29. Applications for courses may include unofficial transcripts, GPA, names of references, explanatory letter of interest in the course, and relevant coursework.

How Is the Distance Between Cities and Points Calculated?

Distance and travel time calculation algorithm.

This route calculation tool harnesses the power of shortest path search algorithms within a weighted road graph, employing sophisticated algorithms like Dijkstra, A-Star, and Contraction Hierarchies . Unlike conventional calculators that use distance or travel time as the graph weight, our system optimizes drive time for vehicles, favoring routes on higher-class roads for a smoother journey.

The backbone of this tool is built on OpenStreetMap data, ensuring our road graphs are accurate and up-to-date. We calculate distances between road segments with the haversine formula , using precise GPS coordinates to measure the Great Circle Distance. This formula is pivotal for calculating "air distance" or "straight line distance" between two points, taking into account the curvature of the Earth.

Road distances, however, diverge from straight line distances due to the natural curvature and layout of roads . To address this, roads are represented as segmented lines, and the haversine formula is applied to each segment, allowing for precise calculation of the journey length between any two points.

Recognizing that cities encompass large areas, our tool selects a central point within each city for distance calculations between cities. For personalized route planning, users can specify exact addresses or select points on the map. Additionally, the route's start and end points can be adjusted directly on the map for enhanced customization.

Travel time calculations break down the route into segments, evaluating the maximum permitted speed for each segment to estimate the fastest possible travel time.

It’s important to note that while our route calculation relies on advanced computer modeling for accuracy, no model is perfect . We encourage users to plan with a margin for adjustment to ensure a reliable and efficient journey.

Other Methods of Calculating Distances

One simple way to measure distance is by using a highway atlas. By tracing a route with your eye and rolling a curvimeter along it, you can gauge the distance. Estimating travel time involves assuming an average speed of 50 miles/hour on major intercity roads. Although this method provides rough estimates, it's straightforward.

Severe thunderstorms threaten eclipse travelers in Southern Plains

Some travelers heading to and from total solar eclipse viewing destinations could experience heavy rain, localized flooding and severe storms.

Clouds aren’t the only concern as millions prepare to watch the solar eclipse; severe weather will also be a concern.

With the likelihood of millions of people traveling to view the highly-anticipated total solar eclipse on Monday, April 8, in the United States, some may face adverse weather conditions on their journey. AccuWeather meteorologists expect the weather to play a role in some areas, not only when viewing the eclipse but especially for post-eclipse travelers.

In addition to cloud cover , because masses of people will be outdoors, AccuWeather has outlined areas of severe weather for parts of the Southern states in the days leading up to the eclipse and for the journey home. Even sub-severe thunderstorms can pose risks for those outdoors in the Midwest.

"Severe thunderstorms can be particularly dangerous for people camping outside near the path of totality if they are not in a well-built structure," AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pastelok said, adding, "Risks can be amplified in rural areas with more limited infrastructure."

On a lighter note, because the sun's energy will be reduced briefly during the middle of the day, temperatures may dip a few degrees in some areas rather than continue a steady climb, which would be the routine case.

Interior Northeast

Wintry conditions are in store for people traveling to the zone of totality over the interior Northeast on Saturday.

"In the wake of the big snowstorm over the northern tier of the Northeast, motorists may have to contend with locally heavy rain and wet snow showers with sudden low visibility and wet road conditions into the start of the weekend," AccuWeather Senior Meteorologist Courtney Travis said.

AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures will be as low as the 10s and 20s at times in the eastern Great Lakes region into Saturday, so packing warm clothes is recommended if spending a few days in the towns and cities in the region.

Some of the best weather for spending time outdoors in the region will be on Sunday with areas of sunshine and light winds.

On Monday, the day of the eclipse, moisture in the form of clouds and showers may cause a problem in many areas of the interior Northeast despite milder conditions and more seasonable temperatures for early April. Temperatures during the mid-afternoon in the path of totality will range from the upper 40s to the mid-50s F.

Perhaps the best weather of the interior Northeast region for viewing the eclipse will be in Maine. However, getting to a good spot in rural areas may be difficult where trees, snow and power lines could be blocking the way.

Mid-Mississippi, Ohio Valley zone

The period into Saturday evening will be the best for local travel and spending time outdoors in the zone from Arkansas to Indiana. Saturday will be noticeably milder in the afternoon over the Midwest. Travis said that southerly winds will pick up on Saturday toward Arkansas, but dry weather will prevail.

Weather conditions will likely deteriorate in this zone on Sunday as a front advances from the High Plains with showers and thunderstorms.

Those spending time outdoors, especially in tents or campers, should know that even a garden-variety thunderstorm can produce lightning strikes and brief wind gusts with little notice.

The latest indications are that part of this zone will likely remain unsettled with clouds, showers and thunderstorms on eclipse day. The situation could escalate in a few locations to the point that downpours persist and lead to incidents of urban and small-stream flooding.

"Flash flooding is especially a concern on Monday in the zone from western Tennessee to northern Louisiana, including parts of southeastern Arkansas," Travis said.

Campers should be aware of the risk of rapid water surges that can occur along creeks and small rivers, even if downpours occur upstream.

"Enough of a push of dry air may occur to cause clouds to leave in portions of Illinois, Indiana, Ohio, Missouri, northwestern and central Arkansas and western Kentucky in time for the eclipse Monday," AccuWeather Meteorologist Joseph Bauer said.

Texas and Oklahoma

As sunshine holds on over much of the total eclipse path from southwest Texas to Arkansas, it will be very windy across the Great Plains on Saturday.

"The strong winds can lead to travel disruptions, both in the air and on the ground," Bauer said, adding, "They also can pick up dust, leading to poor air quality and perhaps areas of haze and lowered visibility."

The stiff winds may cause trouble for tents and canopies set up. Vehicles could be sandblasted in extreme cases.

Campers should use caution with open flames as any sparks can quickly set dry brush on fire.

"Warmth more typical of late April will persist across South Texas," AccuWeather Lead Long-Range Meteorologist Paul Pasetlok said. "Hats, sunscreen, light-colored clothing and water will be vital for those outside in this area with AccuWeather RealFeel® Temperatures in the 90s F during the afternoons."

AccuWeather meteorologists have outlined a zone of severe thunderstorms from Saturday afternoon to Saturday night. While much of this zone lies outside of the path of totality for Monday, some powerful storms may occur in portions of Oklahoma, where masses of people may gather. Powerful wind gusts and torrential downpours will be the most common in the storms. However, some of the strongest storms could produce dangerous and damaging large hail.

Similar to parts of the Midwest, a push of dry air should be enough to bring the sun out and keep rain away on Sunday for much of the southern Plains region.

However, on Monday, the atmosphere will begin to moisten. The extent of clouds will begin to increase, but it is possible that the eclipse may still be visible at times.

The drive home Monday evening, Tuesday

AccuWeather meteorologists are expecting an increase in the areal coverage of clouds, showers and thunderstorms from late Monday to Tuesday over the southern Plains, so motorists heading home immediately afterward may encounter wet roads and poor visibility on the highway in some cases. Rain may ramp up to the point where localized flooding is possible, and some thunderstorms may be heavy or severe.

"Strong winds, dangerous lightning strikes, hail and perhaps a few tornadoes could threaten those traveling back home the night of April 8 and during the day April 9, especially in Texas north of I-10," Pastelok said. "Storms can also develop in western Oklahoma, western Kansas and northwestern Texas."

"With so many people traveling to unfamiliar areas and camping outdoors or staying in an RV, it’s important to take a few minutes to locate your nearest storm shelter. It may be a sturdy restroom building, campground office, a nearby public storm shelter, or even a 24-hour retail store,” AccuWeather Director of Forecasting Operations Dan DePodwin said.

“It is extremely important to have multiple ways to get severe weather alerts, especially when they’re traveling in unfamiliar areas. If you’re staying in a location with limited cell phone signal, ask employees about their weather plan and how they’ll notify visitors if a severe storm is approaching. Do not assume that loudspeakers are in place that relay warnings or tornado sirens are within earshot,” DePodwin added.

Drenching rain and gusty thunderstorms will become more widespread over the lower part of the Mississippi and Tennessee valleys from Monday night to Thursday. In some cases, secondary roads may become blocked by high water. Downpours will eventually extend across portions of the Ohio Valley and interior Northeast and could renew or aggravate flooding following this past week's deluge.
