Top Day Trips From Denver

One of the best things to do in Denver in October is to check out nearby destinations. There are so many places to see within just an hour or two of the Mile High City.

A popular destination this month is Colorado Springs. In this lively town, you can check out Pikes Peak, stroll through the Garden of the Gods, or explore the Air Force Academy.

You also still have a chance to visit Rocky Mountain, National Park. It’s an amazing day trip that allows you to see a variety of wildlife and drive on one of the highest altitude roads in the US (as long as there is no snow!).

You can also check out the stops on the Lariat Loop. This 40-mile adventure is just west of Denver and includes interesting attractions, places to go shopping, and several great restaurants.

DENVER IN OCTOBER WEATHER

October in Denver usually mild temperatures, but it can vary throughout the month. Early October may still have some warmer days with temperatures between 60 to 70 degrees Fahrenheit (15 to 21 degrees Celsius). As month progresses, the weather starts to cool down, and by the end of October, you might see temperatures between 50 and 60 degrees Fahrenheit (10 to 15 degrees Celsius).

Colorado’s October weather tends to combine warm fall days with cool autumn evenings, making it perfect sweater weather.

Does it snow in Denver in October?

It’s not uncommon for the mountains around Denver to get their first snow in October, and some ski resorts even open up for the new powder season in late October! For example, Arapahoe Ski Basin opened up for its 2022 season on October 23.

Still the opening of ski resorts can vary from year to year depending on the number of inches of fresh powder the mountains have received.

2. Meow Wolf

Meow Wolf is an immersive art experience filled with vibrant colors, multiple exhibits, and modern artwork. This is the perfect place to visit for those looking to spend several hours soaking in an incredible atmosphere and unique pieces of artwork. 

3. Larimer Square

Larimer Square is one of the most lively parts of downtown Denver and is home to countless restaurants, bars, and shopping.

It’s a popular place to visit on a Friday night, as the area is always lively and has something going on, but you can have just as much fun if you are here on a Monday afternoon.

Boulder is just a short 30-40 minute drive from Denver, making it the perfect place to stay just outside of the Mile High City.

Boulder is the perfect place to visit for those looking to enjoy mountain biking, hiking, or simply exploring the Colorado State University of Boulder campus. 

Visiting Aspen in October is a must if you want to see the best fall colors in Colorado! There is nothing like seeing the Aspen trees turn yellow and being able to view the Maroon Bells as the surrounding fall foliage begins to change into shades of red, yellow, and orange.

The city of Denver does offer a public bus transportation option as well as a light rail system that will take you throughout Denver and to some of the surrounding areas. This is a great option for those looking to stay directly in Denver and save some money on renting a vehicle. 

A car rental as the best way to get around Denver. Renting a car allows you to take day trips and drive around the area without relying on public transportation.

Renting a car is a perfect way to get around, espeically if you want to get outside downtown Denver. Not all areas of the city have public transportation and taking Uber could quickly add up and become more expensive than a daily rate for your rental car.

Uber is definitely an option in Denver! This is a great option for those that plan on staying in downtown Denver, and you can also take Uber from Denver Airport .

However, Uber can get fairly expensive depending on how many you plan on taking and what time of day you plan on being! 

Plus, taking an Uber is an option to get to surrounding areas like Boulder, Golden, or surrounding mountain towns but the price can be pretty steep, especially of there’s a surge.

In fact, many people think Denver is in the mountains, constantly covered in snow. But it’s not.

Denver is about an hour away from the core of mountain towns. So the weather in October in Denver does not reflect what the mountains get.

On average, the first snowfall in Denver happens around October 18 and the city will see around 4″ of snow during the month. However, the average high in October is 68.

So as you can see, the weather changes often and you really don’t know what to expect.

1. Take a Drive Through Changing Colors

If you make it to Denver in early October, then you’ll have a good chance of seeing some of the best colors the state has.

One of the best drives that locals enjoy is heading up 285 and through Kenosha, and then Guanella Pass . This area has little hikes you can do as well, but staying in the car will provide ample opportunity for colorful displays.

Guanella Pass will land you in Georgetown just off I-70. This is a great place to stop for lunch and to walk around after a morning in the car.

Early October will also grant you access to colors at Rocky Mountain National Park. Trail Ridge Road is widely known for its incredibly display of colors.

2. Take a Hike for Changing Colors

Make sure to check out the colors at Lair O’ the Bear, a short drive away from the city. You’ll get an easy hike the kids will love, especially with the castle at the end.

You can also head to Golden Gate Canyon State Park for incredible, vibrant hues throughout. This park gets really busy during leaf peeping season, so make sure to get there early.

Previously known as Boo at the Zoo , this event has changed names to Wild Fall. It’s mostly the program that it use to be, but without the candy.

The focus of Wild Fall is on education about nature and animals. But it still provides plenty of fun for families.

Dress in a costume and enjoy the other costumed creatures (none too scary) that roam around.

These mythical beasts are for fun, not for sneaking up on anyone. Enjoy walking around the zoo, uniquely carved pumpkins, festive food for purchase, and animal demonstrations.

Wild Fall is included in your standard zoo ticket. Wild Fall runs all October.

5. Glow at the Denver Botanic Gardens

For a few days in mid October you can enjoy thousands of spooky, lit up jack-o-lanterns around the Botanic Gardens (York Street location).

Explore the beautiful flowers of the garden all while taking in the fall atmosphere and glow of the grounds.

Tickets sell out far in advance, so reserve ahead of time . There are no ticket sales on site for this event.

*For families with older kids (12+) that want a more spooky adventure, visit the Botanic Gardens for Ghosts in the Gardens. You’ll get to walk around the gardens hearing stories of the Boneyard and encounters staff have had on site. More details here.

6. Visit Anderson Farms

This is a pumpkin patch, and yet so much more. You’ll have to drive slightly north out of Denver to get here, but it’s the place to hang out around Denver in October, so I thought it was worth a mention.

Anderson Farms is the best pumpkin patches in Colorado . People all over Colorado will drive to visit Anderson Farms during fall.

Enjoy a pumpkin patch, corn maze, paintball, wooden train, slides, pumpkin cannons, pedal karts, barrel trains, a kids rainbow maze, or even rent out a private fire pit.

There is a lot going on at Anderson Farms!

7. Oktoberfest in Denver

Denver hosts an Oktoberfest that is family-friendly so everyone can join the fun!

If you’re in Denver in late September / early October, make sure to stop by Larimer and 21st to listen to some polka and disco, dance the day away, watch the Long Dog Race, go bowling with a keg, and more.

8. Fright Fest at Elitch Gardens

Join in on one of the largest Halloween events in Colorado by heading to Elitch Gardens in Denver in October.

The theme park has lots of fun rides and family entertainment, but come nighttime during October, it turns spooky.

You’ll run into ghouls, zombies, and more while searching for a haunted house. These spooky weekends in October are full of bones, skulls, graveyards, and plenty of actors to keep the Fright Fest going strong.

9. Bones, Bats, Boo! At Denver Museum of Nature and Science

Jump on the opportunity to spend a night at the museum in October, one weekend only!

Wear your costume to this fun family-friendly night where you’ll be entertained with crafts, science, storytime, and a trip to the planetarium.

10. Halloween Fest at the Aquarium

If you’re spending the end of October in Denver with the kids, make sure to check out the Halloween Fest at the Denver Aquarium.

Kids will love playing games, guessing the weight of a giant pumpkin, taking their chance at prizes, trick-or-treating, and more.

11. Magic of the Jack O’ Lanterns

If you are looking for what to do in Denver in October, this is by far one of the most popular activities.

Just south of Denver in Littleton you can walk among 7,000 glowing jack o’ lanterns. You’ll feel as if you are in a sea of carved pumpkins!

Hosted at Hudson Gardens, you’ll also encounter glowing scenes of dinosaurs, a pirate ship, dragons, and more.

Denver has long been one of the country’s best destinations thanks to the all-year-round travel opportunities and activities. While you won’t get a definite answer when you ask what the best time to visit Denver is, many will agree that Denver in October is simply amazing.

As part of the fall season, October in Denver has mild temperatures. Couple that with the many spooky and interesting activities, and you’re in for a holiday to remember.

From tasting award-winning ales to an immersive art experience, there’s a ton of fun things to do in Denver in October.

Great American Beer Fest

Denver has an outstanding beer scene! So it’s only right that you attend one of the nation’s best beer festivals while here. The Great American Beer Fest is a three-day, annual occasion held during the fall in Denver, promising boozy delight for all. Forget Denver; this is one of the best things to do in Colorado in October.

The Great American Beer Fest is every beer lover’s dream — and perhaps worst nightmare in the morning — that brings together America’s best brewers. Whatever beer you may be in the mood for, they’re sure to have it. We’re talking lagers, IPAs, ales, stouts, and more, some of which are award-winning.

During the festival, you can spoil your taste buds with these drinks and join in on beer education sessions. Unfortunately, you can’t just rock up and get in! You’ll have to purchase a ticket , and they typically go on sale from June.

Note: The festival is held at the end of September or early October. The 2023 edition is currently being held in September.

Catch a Sports Ball Game

Denver has the notable distinction of being one of few American cities to be home to teams in each of the country’s big four leagues. The Mile High City has representatives in the NFL, the MLB, the NBA, and the NHL.

With that much variety in sports, why not spend a day or two in Denver cheering on one of the hometown teams?

Downtown, you can head to the Empower Field at Mile High and catch some NFL games. Watch the Denver Broncos take on whoever amongst some of the sport’s most passionate fans.

Also in Downtown is Coors Field, where the MLB’s Colorado Rockies try to knock the ball out of the ballpark. Beer enthusiasts want to check out the SandLot Brewery for award-winning beer that’s been crowned at the World Beer Cup.

If you’re in the mood to watch some shooting stars, the Ball Arena and the NBA’s Denver Nuggets await. Prefer seeing athletes glide on ice? Then you can’t miss the NHL’s Colorado Avalanche playing in the same arena!

Stay in a Haunted Hotel

Denver has a long and sometimes horrid history that, depending on what you believe, led to a lot of paranormal activity. While many spirits have gone to the afterlife, some have remained behind and are tied to various buildings, including the city’s hotels.

As a result, many of the haunted hotels in Colorado are found in Denver and provide the perfect resting place (temporarily, of course) for the daring.

If you’re a fan of spooky fun, you’ll have a fantastic time at the Brown Palace Hotel , which has creepy telltales to spare. Previously, guests have said they have seen a spirit vanish into the walls once spotted. There’s also the story of those who stayed here seeing flickering lights, a moving carpet, and more.

Another of Denver’s spookiest accommodations is the Victor Hotel , whose haunted past goes back to 1891. The weirdest paranormal sighting here has probably been the “peeper ghost”, a peeping tom often found in the women’s bathroom. Another interesting one is the ghost of Florence Montague, who murdered her lover in room 320. Multiple guests have reported ripped sheets and that she’s pinned men down by the arms in the past.

The Patterson Inn may have left its haunted past behind, but it’s still been the playground of some spirits. When a film crew was documenting unusual experiences during renovations, they reportedly saw ghosts and heard whispering voices. What’s more, guard dogs were brought in, and some were found dead the next day.

Attempt the Chatfield Corn Maze

While it’s not haunted, the Chatfield Corn Maze is still one of the best things to do in October in Denver. The open-air maze is at the Denver Botanic Gardens and is a favorite for all age groups.

You’ll have to navigate your way around seven acres of corn as you try to find the exit. Unless you’re a maze whiz, you’ll have around an hour of fun running into dead ends and enjoying the many twists of the experience.

After escaping the maze, you can admire the artistic structure created using willow saplings and branches if you still have time. Alternatively, you can throw yourself into another getaway situation at the escape room, which features a pirate ship theme.

Visit Spookadelia

While Denver is renowned for its art scene, few experiences can top Spookadelia: The Awakening . Hosted at the Spectra Art Space, this spectacle is a showcase of interactive, psychedelic immersive art where sci-fi comes to life.

While open to interpretation, the exhibit aims to investigate the human condition and our relationship with self and grows annually. Each year, it goes bigger and better with new installations, characters, and more added.

During your visit, you’ll be helping a citizen of the fictional Novo Ita escape their eternal sleep state. To do so, put on your best Sherlock Holmes hat and navigate the realm of dreams to help them rediscover their identity and regain consciousness.

The best part? If you successfully complete your mission, you’ll be rewarded with a tasty treat at the end.

Go on a Denver Ghost Tour

You already know Denver has an eerie past, and it doesn’t just end with its hotels. There are a number of landmarks and buildings, each with its own paranormal activity, and they’re best discovered on a Denver ghost tour .

During this private haunted driving ghost tour , you’ll learn all about Denver’s spooky tales from the comfort of a heated car. While your guide reveals the hidden stories, you’ll stop by places like Cheesman Park, Grosvenor Arms, the Molly Brown House Museum, and the Peabody-Whitehead Mansion. Cooler temperatures and stunning fall color display mark the fall season in the Centennial State. When it comes to things to do in October in Colorado, there are several ways to celebrate the season of pumpkin spice and everything nice.

Fall in Colorado is a wonderful time to enjoy various festivals, drives, and unique mountain scenery. The days are still relatively long which means you can start the day off with a hike, hit up a hot spring, and soak up a sunset on one of Colorado’s most scenic drives .

October in Colorado isn’t nearly as crowded as the summer months, and the mountain traffic is long gone – making it an ideal time to explore a more low-key side of the state. So grab your chunky sweater, it’s time to discover the magic of Colorado in October.

What is the Weather Like in Colorado in October?

Colorado weather is always a bit unpredictable and October is no exception. In fact, the first snow of the Front Range typically happens in late October. Weather in places like Denver, Colorado Springs, and Boulder can be quite warm during the day and below freezing at night.

The mountains tend to be windy and cold with sunny days. Temperatures frequently dip below freezing at night and higher elevations (above treeline) are frequently dusted in snow.

The Western Slope feels much more like a dry desert. Temperatures are still quite warm (in the mid-70s) and the nights are cooler (in the 50s). If you still want to camp, then places like Fruita, Mesa Verde, and the Colorado National Monument are all prime choices.

Do the Leaves Change in Colorado in October?

Peak fall foliage in northern and central Colorado typically happens in mid to late September. Southern Colorado, such as Pueblo, the San Juan and Sangre de Cristo mountains, and the Four Corners Region typically see peak fall colors in early October. So if you’re after colorful displays of changing leaves, be sure to head to the southern part of the state.

Denver, Boulder, Colorado Springs, and Fort Collins sit at lower elevations. This means that peak fall colors of the maple and oak trees in the cities happen from mid to late October. So if your visiting Colorado later in the month, be sure to spend some time in Front Range cities to experience the fall displays.

1. Attend a Fun-Filled Festival in Colorado

One of the best things to do in Colorado in October is to attend one of the many festivals happening throughout the state. From famous beer fests to bugling elk displays, there are tons of fun-filled fall festivals.

• Elk Fest in Estes Pa r k . Experience the annual elk rut displays and learn about these magnificent creatures. October 2-3, 2021
• Denver Botanical Gardens Pumpkin Festival. Enjoy the 10-acre Chatfield Farms pumpkin patch and enjoy live music, crafts, pony rides, and a kid’s maze. October 8-10, 2021
• Boo at the Zoo in Colorado Springs. Give yourself a spook at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo for the whole month of October. Enjoy the animals, lights, and treats alike.
• Glow at the Gardens at the Denver Botanical Gardens. Trick or treating, glow-in-the-dark games, and a celebration of pumpkin carving mark this annual celebration at the Denver Botanical Gardens. Evenings October 19 – 24, 2021
• Great American Beer Festival in Denver. Known as the largest beer festival in the Americas this signature annual festival features brews from all over the country. Brewers compete for various medals and as an attendee, you can sample beverages spanning the wildest sours to classic lagers. September 17th through October 17th, 2021
• Oktoberfest. If there’s one thing Colorado loves, it’s the month of October. With several different festivals happening in cities and towns throughout the state, you can celebrate the season’s harvest (and have a few brews). Dates vary depending on the town.

2. Go for a Scenic Drive

If the chilly mountain air has you wishing for warmer weather, why not go on a scenic drive and enjoy beautiful landscapes from the comfort of a heated car. Here’s a look at a few drool-worthy drives worth taking in Colorado in October.

• The Million Dollar Highway and San Juan Scenic Byway. Located beween Ridgway and Durango, the San Juan Scenic Byway is not only one of the best fall drives in Colorado , but it’s one of the most stunning scenic drives in the US. The Million Dollar Highway stretches from Ouray to Silverton.
• Peak-to-Peak Highway . Stretching from Estes Park and passing famous landmarks like Long’s Peak, the Peak-to-Peak highway is famous for being one of the most scenic drives near Denver .
• Loriat Loop . Looping from Lookout Mountain in Golden through nearby Evergreen , this super-scenic Front Range drive delivers big fall views.

3. Soak in a Mountain Hot Spring

Nothing takes the chill out of the air quite like visiting a Colorado hot spring . What makes hot springs one of the most appealing things to do in Colorado in October is pleasant combination of hot, mineral-rich water with brisk mountain air. So plan a weekend getaway from Denver to go for a relaxing soak in these incredible hot springs.

4. Get Lost in a Corn Maze

No October in Colorado is complete without at least one visit to a corn maze. Make your way through a living maze, perfect for kids, couples, and families. A few notable Colorado corn mazes include:

If you get into the spooky season, consider spending the night in one of Colorado’s most haunted hotels. Give yourself a fright a few of these mysterious hot spots.

• The Stanley Hote l in Estes Park. Used as inspiration for the movie The Shining, this classic establishment will certainly give you chills.
• The Brown Palace in Denver . As one of the oldest and most prestigious hotels in Colorado, there’s plenty of hauntings here too – especially rooms 904 and 100.
• The Black Monarch Hotel in Victor. After purchasing a supposedly haunted property, the current owners leaned into the fright by creating a hotel with serial killer themes.
• Hotel Colroado in Glenwood Springs. This long-standing etablishment has had many different faces over the years, including a WWII hospital for the Navy. Hauntings and mysterious happenings are so common here, spirits even have names.

8. Hit the Trails

Arguably one of the best things to do in Colorado for fall is to hit the trails on one of the many stunning fall hikes in Colorado . Even if the leaves have turned, there’s still plenty to love about a hike in the crisp mountain air. If you’re after the changing leaves, be sure to head down south. A few notable October hikes include:

• Hiking in Golden Gate State Park near Boulder

Best Places to Visit in Colorado in October

Although there are many beautiful places in Colorado , a few areas particularly shine during the month of October. Each of these places has something different to offer from the next. You’ll get a well-rounded look at the best places to visit in Colorado in October with this list.

1. Glenwood Springs

The big crowds of summer are long gone if you visit Glenwood Springs in October. But that doesn’t mean there still isn’t plenty to do. In fact, there are so many things to do in Glenwood Springs , you’ll find yourself coming back here almost every season.

Be sure to check out the Hanging Lake hike (permit required) for utterly scenic canyon landscapes. The Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park delivers high-flying fun for the whole family. Afterward, go for a soak in one of two hot springs (Iron Mountain is a personal fave of mine but it’s not as kid-friendly as the Glenwood Hot Springs).

  Local Tip: Hanging Lake has been experiencing temporary closures due to trail maintenance from the 2021 landslides (yup, even in 2024). Always check on the permit website for the most accurate and up-to-date info!

2. Rocky Mountain National Park

What I love the most about visiting Rocky Mountain National Park in October is that the park gets much quieter this time of year. After October 11th, you don’t need to worry about timed entry permits, meaning you can come and go as you please throughout the park.

Be sure to catch a sunrise at Emerald Lake , one of the prettiest Colorado lakes . If you’re lucky, you’ll hear an elk bugling his mating call in the distance. There are several other hikes in Rocky Mountain National Park for all abilities if you want to explore further.

Although Trail Ridge Road may be closed this time of year, the Many Peaks Overlook is still open. Soak in the jaw-dropping views and smell the scent of the pine trees. You can also walk or cross country ski the road when it’s closed.

Local Tip: If you want to hear elk, it’s best to head to the park in the early morning or evening.

3. Denver in October

For a more laid-back city experience, October is a wonderful time to explore Denver. With so many festivals, concerts, and plenty of warm sunshine, there’s a lot to do in Denver. From museums to food courts and easy hikes near Denver to concerts, you’ll never run out of activities.

4. Grand Junction and Fruita

October is prime time for exploring America’s red rock country. Many people don’t know that Grand Junction and Fruita are home to some stunning red rock canyons and sky-high rock towers. The Colorado National Monument is a must-see, but there are plenty of hikes near Grand Junction that also feature red rock canyons.

Fruita is world-famous for its mountain bike trails and hosts many festivals around the single track lifestyle during the fall months.

Other notable areas include Unaweep Canyon, McInnis Canyon National Recreation Area, and wine tasting in nearby Palisade.

5. Mesa Verde

Uncover the unique and rich history of the American Southwest at Mesa Verde National Park. Visiting this truly remarkable Ancestral Puebloan city is a must-see national park . Take a guided tour to learn about the specialized and mysterious ways in which this mighty ancient culture lived. The town actually celebrates this with their annual Elk Fest which is held at the beginning of October.

This year Pumpkin Nights Denver is back and coming to Colorado October 17 to November 3, 2023. Discounted tickets go on sale soon, so stay tuned.

Journey through over 3,000 hand-carved artificial pumpkins and various fantasy lands made from pumpkins.

Kids and adults alike will love the colorful light displays, an enchanted forest, pumpkin reef, pirate’s cove, and live artist demonstrations.

Since this event is held in late fall, dress warm. Wear lots of layers and comfortable shoes for walking around.

The event is held in Denver at the Adams County Fairgrounds and is open from 5:30pm – 10:30pm nightly.

6. Denver Botanic Gardens Pumpkin Festival

When visiting Denver, we highly recommend attending the Denver Botanic Gardens Pumpkin Festival on October 6-8, 2023.

Tickets to the Chatfield Farms include access to the 10-acre pumpkin patch and lots of activities for the whole family, including:

Opening September 16th this local farm is located just 35 minutes south of Denver and 20 minutes north of Colorado Springs. It’s perfect for families and adults of all ages.

In addition to the pumpkin patch it features a corn maze, hay bale mountain, hay bale castle and of course, adorable farm animals.

They also sell seasonal decorations that are grown right on the farm, like corn stalk bundles, small gourds, large and mini pumpkins, and even jumbo white pumpkins.

8. Boo at the Zoo

Wanting a family night of fun instead of a daytime activity? Visit the original creatures of the night when you attend Boo at the Zoo at the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in October .

This is a great evening activity for kids and adults alike. The whole family will enjoy dressing up in costume to visit the animals at the zoo.

It’s all treats and no tricks at the zoo this Halloween!

9. Glow at the Gardens in Denver

Return to the Denver Botanic Gardens for their incredible Glow at the Gardens featured in the evenings, October 17-22, 2023.

This is a luminous nighttime celebration of America’s favorite fall-time gourd. Tour the gardens at night to see spooky lighting displays and hundreds of carved, lighted pumpkins.

All of the pumpkins are real and harvested from local farms to create incredible sculptures and unbelievably detailed jack-o-lanterns.

10. Great American Beer Festival

Grown ups will enjoy the Great American Beer Festival which is thankfully hosted again in October in Denver, Colorado this year.

The in-person festival has returned in 2023 so get your beer koozies and coolers ready.

The GABF Passport is open for registration though and goes on sale with deals from September 21-23, 2023.

This two-day festival showcases nearly 700 different Colorado breweries and thousands of beers available to taste and enjoy.

11. Drive through Glenwood Canyon

If you’re looking for that fabulous fall foliage, head to the mountains in late September or early October.

We highly recommend a fall visit to Glenwood Canyon, which we have featured in our guide to Glenwood Springs .

Turn off I-70 into the mountains, through Glenwood Canyon (like you’re headed to Aspen) to see all the trees changing near Frisco.

We make the trek every year in October to soak up the colors and really feel those fall vibes along the Colorado river!

You can’t go wrong with a drive through a canyon!

Not only will you be surrounded by beautiful fall foliage, there’s always somewhere to pull off and go for a hike.

Hikes can vary from easy to moderate to rock-climbing-level of difficulty. So, pick a pace that works for you and enjoy yourself.

12. Autumn and Art Show in Cripple Creek

Another great place to visit in the fall is Cripple Creek, Colorado thanks to awesome events like the Autumn and Art Show.

This historic gambling and mining town is on the southwest slopes of Pikes Peak.

And it was once the hub for thousands of gold-seeking miners, so there is loads of history here.

The Autumn and Art Show will be hosted from September to October 2023 at the Cripple Creek Heritage Center.

13. Palisade Peach Festival

There are some fall foods that every native Coloradoan just can’t resist. And newcomers will quickly be hooked too!

There is nothing like a Palisade peach in the fall and the best way to celebrate this is at the Palisade Peach Festival from August 17-19, 2023.  

Load up on these local peaches for some ah-may-zing peach cobbler, peach chutney on pork chops, or just eat them fresh.

In the harvest season, you’ll find plenty of squashes, like pumpkin and butternut squash.

Our favorite flavor of fall is sage, which gives an earthy, homey flavor to those warm and filling dishes we all love this time of year.

Fun fact: There are lots of kinds of sage that grow natively in Colorado and can be eaten straight off the bush.

14. Happy Apple Farm in Penrose

Growing up, a childhood favorite of mine was an annual visit to Happy Apple Farm in Penrose, Colorado (near Pueblo).

At this pick-your-own fruit farm, you can bring home fresh fruit as well as jams, jellies, donuts, and cider from the country store.

As of 2022 most of the apple harvest suffered from a late freeze in April and this caused the Happy Apple Farm to close. However, you can still enjoy the great pumpkin patch opening sometime this summer.

15. Morrison Cider Festival

Every September you can head to Morrison, Colorado (southeast of Denver) for the Morrison Cider Festival.

This year’s fest is open from 10am to dark Saturday, September 30, 2023.

Enjoy free admission for hot mugs of apple cider and activities like horseshoe tournaments, pony rides, and live music.

Kids and adults will love watching the cider press demonstration and learn how cider is made from apples. Hard ciders are also available to sample for a fee for adults.

16. Chile & Frijoles Festival in Pueblo

Celebrate Pueblo, Colorado’s famous green chile at the Chile & Frijoles Festival in historic downtown Pueblo, September 22-24, 2023.

Throughout late September, you’ll often see chefs charring green chiles in barrel drums outdoors.

But come fall time, there’s no better place to partake of Pueblo’s favorite food than this festival.

Taste the delicious Colorado green chile smothered over a burrito or as a salsa. Stay for the cooking competitions, live music, dancing, arts and crafts, and the farmer’s market.

17. Applefest in Cedaredge

Typically, on the first full weekend of October you can enjoy the Cederedge Applefest from October 6-8, 2023.

The event is on your way toward Grand Junction and Palisade. And it’s home to row after row of apple trees.

Applefest has more than 150 vendors, and features a classic car and antique tractor show, and live music.

There is even a beer stein holding competition for those over 21. It’s a five-hour drive from Denver, but so worth the journey for a real small-town fall feel.

18. Rock Creek Farm Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze

Kids and adults will love the Rock Creek Farm Pumpkin Patch and Corn Maze in Broomfield, Colorado.

This is one of the largest pumpkin patches in the state and boasts over 100 acres of pumpkins to pick!

There are three corn mazes to choose from, including one that traces 5 miles of maze across 30 acres of field.

Rock Creek Farm opens Saturday, September 2022 and will remain open through Halloween.

Or check out the Corn Maze at Chatfield Farms , which is open from September 15th – October 29th, 2023 from 9am-5pm, Friday-Sunday.

19. Punkin Chunkin

You don’t want to miss the Punkin Chunkin festival in Nederland, Colorado.

Although this event was closed for 2022 it’s back this year with dates starting on November 2-3 2023. Come get a front row seat to all the punkin chunkin competition.

Competitors will shoot pumpkins with cannons, fling them with catapults, and generally throw some gourds around.

Come for the chunkin, stay for the chainsaw-carving, the you-pick pumpkins, live music, crafts, and food and beverage vendors.

20. Oktoberfest Denver

Beer lovers can rejoice thanks to the Oktoberfest Denver festival. The next event will be held on two weekends in September this year.

Mark your calendars for the weekends of September 22-24, 2023 & September 29-October 1, 2023.

Get free admission and more than just beer (although the beer selection is incredible!).

All ages will enjoy the dachshund derby, costume contests, food booths, polka dancing, and live music.

21. Parade of Homes

As the summer winds down, we personally look forward to checking out the Springs Parade of Homes .

Hosted September 8-24, 2023 in both Colorado Springs and Denver. Tickets will go on sale in August 2023.

This event is a fun way to see some of the amazing homes that have been built in Colorado .

You’ll see unique features that most traditional homes don’t have, like secret doorways behind bookcases and trapdoors to movie theaters.

As we enter into fall in Colorado during October, everyone is looking for ways to enjoy the cooler temperatures, seeking out the best spots to see fall foliage, and preparing for ski season. By now, the first snow has hit the high country while colorful aspens highlight the mountainsides, and the eternal debate of cider vs. pumpkin spice lattes ignite.

It’s truly a beautiful time of year to see the Centennial State and all it has to offer. So, enjoy the best of fall with plenty of fun things to do in Colorado in October.

Here are some things to do in CO during October 2023 :

Corn Maze at Chatfield Farms

The fall season in Colorado isn’t complete until you’ve walked through the corn maze at Chatfield Farms . Get lost in their 7-acre corn maze as you wind your way through the towering stocks of corn. See the maze from above with views from the two 15-foot-tall illuminated bridges.

For the kids aged 10 and under, they may explore the corn mini-maze. Plus, for the month of October only, pick your perfect pumpkin from Chatfield’s 10-acre pumpkin patch.

The corn maze is open Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for the entire month of October.

Hit the slopes at Arapahoe Basin

Hit the slopes early and kick off the ski season with a day at Arapahoe Basin. Notoriously known for operating the longest ski and ride season of any ski resort in Colorado, their anticipated open date for the 2023-24 season is mid-October , weather-dependent.

The ski resort offers more than 1,400 acres, nine lifts, and a restaurant serving up food and mountain views at 12,500 feet. Known for its laid-back culture, the low-key atmosphere is just one of the many reasons local Coloradans seek powder at A-Basin.

Take a scenic drive

In October, fall colors hang around for the first few weeks of the month. One of the best ways to soak up as much fall foliage as you can is with a scenic drive. Popular fall routes include:

• Million Dollar Highway between Silverton and Ouray. Reportedly costing one million dollars to build, this drive provides sweeping mountain views and a sea of golden aspens at almost every corner. As part of the San Juan Skyway, this is one of the most scenic routes in all of Colorado.
• Last Dollar Road between Telluride and Ridgway (4-wheel drive only). Winding through the majestic San Juan Mountains, discover mountain peaks, thick aspen groves, golden meadows, and some of Colorado’s most beautiful ranches.
• The West Elk Loop connects the towns of Paonia, Crested Butte, Gunnison, and Carbondale. This route winds through 205 miles of expansive meadows, rivers, deep canyons, and massive aspen groves. Highlights include Blue Mesa Reservoir, Crystal Lakes, Kebler Pass, and McClure Pass.
• Gold Belt Scenic Byway , where miners once mined for gold in towns like Victor and Cripple Creek, is now a spot where visitors seek gold in a different way with the colorful fall foliage that dots this scenic byway. Highlights include Phantom Canyon, Florissant Fossil Beds National Monument, and historic towns.

Stay in a haunted hotel

Get into the spirit of the season and stay in one of Colorado’s several haunted hotels . One of the most popular and well-known Colorado haunted hotels is The Stanley in Estes Park. Known for the inspiration of the Stephen King novel, “The Shining,” the hotel is appreciated as one of America’s most haunted hotels.

The historic hotel is reported to have its share of spirits and ghostly hauntings that make frequent appearances. Complete your experience with their ghostly night tours, featuring a 60-minute walking tour that introduces you to Stephen King, the original hotel owner F.O. Stanley, and other notable visitors over the last 100+ years.

• Imperial Hotel in Silverton – Featured on an episode of Travel Channel’s Ghost Adventures, the Imperial Hotel is said to be haunted by the spirit of the original owner and his daughter.
• Hotel Jerome in Aspen – A local landmark since 1889, Hotel Jerome is believed to house the spirit of a young boy who drowned in the hotel pool, plus other sightings of the mining men who once stayed at the hotel.
• The Oxford Hotel in Denver – Denver’s oldest boutique hotel, in operation since 1891. The Oxford Hotel is said to be haunted by a woman who killed her lover and herself at the hotel, with specific sightings in room 320. The notorious Cruise Room bar inside the hotel is also reportedly haunted as well.
• The Brown Palace Hotel in Denver – The luxurious Brown Palace Hotel has been wining and dining celebrities and socialites for over 100 years. It’s rumored to be home to some ghostly spirits who stayed in room 904 100 years ago and have never left.
• Hotel Colorado in Glenwood Springs – Guests of this luxury hotel have reported hearing a woman’s scream, strange knocking, and suspicious elevator movement.

Fall Train Rides

Bask in the beauty of fall in Colorado with a train ride through some of your favorite mountains. Hop aboard the Leadville Colorado & Southern Railroad with one of their special fall train rides where you can enjoy views of the Arkansas River Valley and yellowing aspens as you ride through some of the state’s most scenic landscapes.

Maybe celebrate the season with Autumn Fest on the Georgetown Loop Railroad, only a short 45-minute drive from Denver. Or grab a seat aboard the Cascade Canyon Express via the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad.

While not an actual train, the Pikes Peak Cog Rail is another fun way to see the fall colors and scenic landscape of the Rocky Mountains. The cog rail is running full steam ahead with its year-round schedule. Begin your route in Manitou Springs and ride to the top of Pikes Peak and visit the upgraded Pikes Peak Visitor Center.

Wander around a Fall Festival

Just because the warmer months have passed doesn’t mean there is a shortage of entertaining festivals to attend around the state. Whether you’re in the mood to catch a horror film, taste test some craft spirits, or maybe even try something new (cowboy poetry anyone?), there are numerous events to keep you busy throughout the month.

• Emma Crawford Coffin Races & Parade   honor one of the most influential historic figures in Town, Emma Crawford. Teams of five compete to see who can bring their creatively decorated coffins down the 195-yard track along Manitou Avenue the quickest. There is also a parade and after-party to round out the day.
• Telluride Horror Show  features 3 days of spooky flicks at select locations around the beautiful mountain town. Enjoy a range of horror, sci-fi, thriller and other dark short films. You will also gain insight into the production process through special programs scattered throughout the weekend.
• Breckenridge Craft Spirits Festival celebrates the art of distilling with over 30 Colorado distilleries making an appearance at the 3 day festival. Workshops, educational seminars, and live entertainment fill out the exciting schedule.
• Durango Cowboy Poetry Gathering serves as a place for southwestern stories to be told through poetry readings, storytelling sessions, and music performances. This magical weekend also includes an awe-inspiring Cowboy Parade, composed of everything from llamas and longhorns to Native American dancers and kids on stick horses.

October in Colorado is a picture of autumn splendor, with rich oranges, reds and yellows on the mountains and in the valleys. It’s a great time to travel on a smaller budget and experience cooler weather while hiking, camping or sightseeing before the snows begin to fall in Winter.

October is without a doubt the epitome of the Fall season in Colorado. The weather is cool, clear and dry and the trees are bursting with red, orange and yellow colored leaves. Visitors will love the full splendor of Autumn, as well as the many activities going on throughout the state this month.

One of the best things about visiting in October is the fact that there aren’t a whole lot of other travelers competing for hotels, restaurants and excursion reservations, so your trip should be much easier to book at this time.

If you’ve been wanting to see Colorado in the Fall, October is going to be the perfect month to experience it before the Winter chill comes in. This guide will cover the in’s and out’s to help you plan the perfect trip.

Colorado Weather in October

October weather in Colorado is beautifully clear and dry with occasional rain and snow. Average high temperatures tend to be in the low 70’s°F (21°C) and average low temperatures hover around 45°F (7°C). You’ll typically see the highest temps in the afternoon with the nights always cooling off throughout your trip.

One of the most notable things about going to Colorado in October is the scenic Fall beauty. Visitors will revel in the brilliant Autumn foliage that blankets the state at this time, with the most vibrant colors showcased at the beginning of the month and fading colors toward the end. Either way, October is a perfect time for gorgeous pictures.

No matter the time of year, altitude will always be a factor when traveling to Colorado. Some towns like Alma have an elevation of 10,300′ and others like Wray have an elevation of over 3,000′. As a matter of fact, altitude sickness affects nearly 10% of all visitors. You can prepare your body by eating healthy foods, drinking plenty of water, sleeping well, resting frequently and avoiding alcohol.

Colorado Affordability & Crowds in October

Colorado crowd levels in October can vary, but generally the entire Fall season has low tourist numbers as it’s considered an “in-between” season for the state. Colorado thrives on the Summer visitors and Winter skiers, so Spring and Fall will usually have lower crowds.

Since it is considered off-season, low attendance could affect the hotel and travel rates positively, giving you better options for your stay. Restaurants and excursions will be significantly less crowded, though Fall festivals and Halloween events may get packed out. October is a great time to be in Colorado if you want to save some money on your trip.

Hotel rates will vary by city, with most ski towns offering a wide range of rates, small towns being the cheapest and the capitol city of Denver averaging around $150 – $250 per night for the best hotels.

Colorado Snow & Skiing in October

Colorado snowfall in October is not heavy and has not yet covered all the runs in order for skiing conditions to be ideal. Some areas will definitely see more snowfall than others, especially if they are located at higher altitudes. Therefore, you can’t completely rule skiing out of your trip, but there will only be a select few places with enough snowfall to open up for skiers.

Skiing is not going to be very good in most parts of the state and the most popular resorts won’t be opening back up until late November. Despite this, there are a few more natural areas where avid skiers can have a thrilling time in October.

Best Colorado Ski Resorts in October

Arapahoe Basin & Loveland

Both of these excellent ski areas are located in Dillon, CO in the Arapaho National Forest. They’re ideal for a casual ski trip for expert skiers who don’t require the comfort of a big ski town and are comfortable finding the good ski runs. During October, the amount of snow on the ground will be fairly limited.

Loveland has 1,800 acres of skiable terrain and a summit elevation of 13,010′. It’s said to be one of the best places for guaranteed snow early in the Fall season. They have great options for beginners and experienced skiers with both the Valley and Basin ski areas.

The Valley has it’s own lifts for novice skiers and offers a safe space for practice, while the Basin has wide open runs, steep drops and exhilarating trails. There are also On-Mountain Cabins available for rent, an on-mountain restaurant and a child care facility at the base.

Arapahoe Basin Ski Area is highly regarded as one of the best places to ski year round. Arapahoe Basin offers the ultimate Rocky Mountain experience with some of the lowest crowds and most incredible landscape views. It’s equipped with 1,428 skiable acres with a summit elevation of 13,050′. It’s appropriately nicknamed “the Legend” for it’s epic terrain that appeals best to intermediate and advanced level skiers.

Keystone Resort

Keystone is located in the high country of Colorado and is often one of the first resorts to open each ski season. Keystone usually opens in October, but will have a varying timeline each year depending on their snowfall that season. The resort comes with six different areas for expert jumps, moguls and rails with a summit of 11,980′. Skiers of all levels will find a sweet spot inside the 3,180 acres of terrain here.

Best Things to Do in Colorado in October

Below are some of the best places to visit in the month of October. In addition to these places, other Fall activities available this time of year include ATVing, apple picking, camping, fishing, hiking, horseback riding, hunting, kayaking, mountain biking, rock climbing, sight-seeing, spa retreats and ziplining.

Ride Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad

Located in Antonito, CO, the Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad is absolutely gorgeous in early October. This narrrow-gauge railway ride offers multiple tours throughout the month, traveling from Osier, CO. You’ll have the opportunity to see the trees in their full Fall color at the beginning of the month, with the colors fading and falling in the later weeks.

This National Historic Landmark is considered one of the most scenic train experiences you’ll ever climb aboard. The ride through the Rocky Mountains is intended to take you back to the height of train transportation in the American West, with a lunch included in the trip. Along the way, you’ll get gorgeous views of mountain terrain, desert lands and extensive meadows.

The trip takes a full day to complete, hiking through 64 miles of Colorado’s picturesque scenery. But those who’ve ridden say it’s the best American train experience they’ve had and are eager to return.

Visit Denver

The Mile High City is best known for being the capital of Colorado; a true metropolis that began humbly as a frontier town that boomed in the Gold Rush. If you’re not looking to hike, climb or bike your way through the mountains, Denver is a great place to be in October when the crowds have left and travel rates have dropped.

In October, there are lots of events going on in celebration of the Fall season leading up to Halloween. Some of our favorites include Denver Zoo’s Boo at the Zoo for families looking to celebrate Halloween in a not-so-scary way. Others are more geared towards adults like Denver Botanical Gardens’ Glow in the Gardens night events.

There are many other things to do and experience in Denver, like the historic tours and Old West attractions. In addition to the many attractions all over the city, like Denver Union Station and other historical sites (a lot of these experiences are included in the $30 Mile High Culture Pass – three days of admission and discounts on transportation), you can easily escape to more secluded areas right outside the capitol.

There are also a fair share of free things you can do in and around Denver. Some great suggestions include the driving to see Red Rocks Park or Dinosaur Ridge , about an hour outside the city. You can also take a scenic drive through the Rockies in full Fall color on the Lariat Loop , Guanella Pass Scenic Byway or Peak to Peak Highway .

Experience Estes Park

A short trip outside Denver will drop you off near Rocky Mountain National Park and the town of Estes Park . While Estes Park isn’t necessarily considered it’s own week-long trip destination, it’s got lots of great things to accomplish in October and during the Fall season.

Rocky Mountain National Park is easily accessible from the town of Estes Park . If you feel a hiking excursion may be too cold in October, you can experience the full glory of the Rockies from your car while driving on Trail Ridge Road and get gorgeous pictures with sweeping vistas. For the true western experience, try out one of the Horseback Riding excursions , led by trained horsemen who guide you through the National Park’s lower regions.

Elk Fest is going on in town at the beginning of October, celebrating the annual elk rut. Attendees can participate in a photo hunt challenge, as well as the bugling competition for the best manmade elk call. The popular Peak to Peak Highway and Scenic Byway mentioned above is another great opportunity to getting out to see explore the mountainside from your vehicle.

Tour Canon City

Canon City is a small, historic town not far from Pike National Forest and the famous pink and orange granite Pike’s Peak . Also in driving distance is Manitou Springs’ drawing tourists to its cave dwellings and Miramont Castle Museum, and the town of Cripple Creek featuring the Mollie Kathleen Gold Mine.

Canon City is a beautiful destination in October; as with most Colorado cities this time of year, it’s blooming with Fall glory. Visitors come from miles around to see their Colon Orchards Corn Maze this month, as well as Diana’s Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze . Definitely plan on making a trip to Pike National Forest, home to over one million acres of beautifully preserved aspen forests, streams and mountain areas.

Visitors can hike many of the intermediate trails that leads to Manitou Park, picnic by the lake and drive along any of the scenic roads. Hiking up to Pike’s Peak can be challenging in October, but a good alternative would be to climb to Devil’s Head Lookout which ends with a beautiful view of the forest valley from the service tower.

Another attraction in Canon City is the Royal Gorge Bridge and Park . Tourists can walk the highest suspension bridge in North America and get some of the most stunning photographs you could possibly get on a trip to Colorado. If walking the bridge is too daring for everyone in your party, try the scenic gondola instead .

Visit Gunnison

The town of Gunnison is another gem hidden in the Colorado countryside. It’s loaded with beautifully aspens that glow brilliantly with Autumn coloring this time of year. All across the terrain you’ll find trees, bushes and meadows coming to life with beautiful oranges, reds and yellows. This is a destination for the truly adventurous as the town doesn’t have a lot of attractions outside of exploring the rocky terrain on foot, bike or horseback.

The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is considered Colorado’s least visited National Park, therefore crowd levels should never be a problem when visiting any time of year. But what makes October such a great month to go is the crisp Fall weather. The Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park is truly a sight to behold, made of strikingly dark Precambrian rock.

There are many activities to take part in while visiting, including hiking, fishing, stargazing and even skiing later in the season. Hiking and fishing along the Gunnison River are particularly great activities for all types of vacationers. We’d recommend adding the Black Canyon of the Gunnison National Park to your vacation plans during the week, but not necessarily making it your full vacation – unless you plan only to visit for a weekend.

Hit the Trails in Fruita

Mountain bikers and biking enthusiasts – or casual bikers who want a fun experience – will really love the terrain near Fruita, CO . This area in particular has some of the best trails that you can bike through and September through November will give you that great cool Fall weather, leaving Summer temperatures in the dust.

The desert-like terrain makes for a unique series of trails you can experience along the mountain ridges, cliff ledges and valleys. Most notable are the 18 Road Trails , offering some of the most expansive scenery and considered the best all around. There is also Kokopelli Loops (beautiful scenery and long, multi-day singletrack trails), Lunch Loop Trails (steep, rocky expert terrain) and Rabbit Valley (6 miles of fast, scenic trails).

You can hit the trails on your own self-guided tour or book a tour with the local outfitters. Lodging is available through home rentals and offsite hotels, but to experience all that the great outdoors has to offer, we suggest reserving a camping spot at Highline State Park.

Visit Glenwood Springs

Glenwood Springs is a very hospitable town that makes a perfect base for your vacation. A stay in Glenwood Springs gives you access not only to it’s own amenities, but also to neighboring Aspen where you can easily drive to experience the ski town or hike Maroon Bells for the day.

Glenwood Hot Springs Resort is home to one of the largest natural hot springs on earth. This is a popular destination with Summer tourists, so September visitors will revel in the hot springs without the crowd. The springs sit between neighboring Lookout Mountain and Red Mountain, creating a gorgeous view, and even have options for those interested in golf or fly fishing.

Hiking in October is a great activity, as well. The weather may be crisper than September, but the snows will not have quite begun to settle in at this point. Glenwood Canyon is a great feature just outside the town where tourists can set out on one of the many winding trails. Hanging Lake is another interesting hiking destination, named for it’s curious way of “hanging” off the side of the mountain with trickling waterfalls and glowing green waters.

Hike Mesa Verde National Park

Mesa Verde National Park is the perfect destination for hiking enthusiasts and athletes who love a challenge. October is a perfect time to go when the crowds have left and before the snows come down. The National Park is filled with over 600 cliff-dwellings dating back to 600AD and has some of the most well-preserved archeological sites in the country. Not only will you get an educational history lesson of the area, you’ll get a serious workout just trying to get to these sites.

Ranger-led tours of the Park can be booked at the Visitor Center before arriving at Mesa Verde, located on the main highway leading up to the destination. The tours involve not only walking and hiking, but could also include times where climbing, crawling and awkward maneuvering are necessary. If you don’t want to exert this much effort to see the Ancestral Pueblan cliff dwellings, they can be viewed from afar at the designated overlook that you can drive up to.

October Events in Colorado

There are many events to experience in Colorado all throughout the year. October hosts a variety of different fall festivals, corn mazes, u-pick farm events and Halloween themed experiences. Below we’ve listed the biggest and most popular long term events that appeal to most travelers in October.

Maize in the City

The city of Thornton, CO, a short drive from Denver, puts on this special 20-acre corn maze for families to enjoy throughout the month of October . In addition to the “maize” attraction, there is a mini maze for younger children, and a small farmers’ market filled with local produce and fall decor for purchase.

Haunted Field of Screams

Thornton also hosts a scarier event (best for teenagers and adults) that chooses a different pop culture theme for Halloween each year. This particular corn maze is 40-acres filled with deranged people and monsters lurking in the corn. Guests are challenged with completing the maze while escaping the clutches of these ghosts, zombies and other such creatures.

Boo at the Zoo

On select weekends in the last weeks of October, Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs hosts this family-friendly Halloween event that appeals to young children. Families get to come experience the zoo at night, seeing animals in a whole new way. You’ll also get the chance to collect candy, watch throughout a pumpkin patch and tour a specially decorated haunted house. All guests are encouraged to sport their best Halloween costume.

Fall Events in Denver

Denver hosts loads of different events throughout the Fall season, with many happening in the month of October. Visitors should look into attending one of the following to enhance their trip. Some are great for children, like Denver Zoo’s own version of Boo at the Zoo . Others are great for adults-only, like the Elitch Gardens Fright Fest or Denver Botanical Gardens’ Glow at the Gardens . This event encourages guests to don costumes and come experience the gardens at night, illuminated by glowing lights and jack-o-lanterns.

Other corn mazes are held across the state and may be close to the cities you plan to visit. Be sure to look into one of these if you’ll be in the area: Colon Orchards Corn Maze or Diana’s Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze in Canon City near Grand Junction, and Jack Lanterns Corn Maze in Fort Collins north of Boulder.

Colorado in October: Week by Week

The first week of October in Colorado presents a flurry of festivities for visitors to take part in. The state isn’t in it’s busy season this month, but there is lots to see and do. From fall festivals to pumpkin patches, corn mazes to Halloween events, there’s no shortage of fun to be had this month.

For outdoor activities, residents and visitors alike are taking advantage of the last few warm days to hike mountain terrain, bike the trails, and maybe get in a few more fishing or golf trips. Skiers will be pleased with more snowfall in select areas, but the conditions won’t be good across the state till late November.

Events going on this week include rural corn mazes and fall festivals hosted by local farmers and municipalities. Canon City is a great destination to experience the beauty of Pike National Forest, but also to have fun at the Colon Orchards Corn Maze or Diana’s Pumpkin Patch & Corn Maze.

Second Week

The second week of October in Colorado has a lot of the same activities and scenery as the first. Not much has changed and not much will change till later in the month, so visitors can enjoy plenty of adventures and outdoor tours and excursions across the state with beautifully mild weather.

The Cumbres & Toltec Scenic Railroad, along with the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railway and other similar experiences, are a great investment for your trip. The railroad adventures will take you back to the Old West while chugging along through the Fall foliage of the Colorado Rockies on various different mountain tours.

Thornton, CO really comes alive this week with the opening of two notable events it hosts every October. Maize in the City is a great attraction for families with kids to enjoy together, while the Haunted Field of Screams is decidedly very adult in nature. The town is located just north of Denver and can be easily added to your trip or could be the base for your trip to other close regions.

By the third week of October in Colorado, the Fall foliage may start to fade in areas, making way for the Winter winds that will begin to howl through the mountain ranges in the coming weeks. Crowd levels are still at a low point in pretty much every destination across the state, so trips this week will be easy-going.

Outdoor adventurers should get in their last hikes at one of the many great National Parks in Colorado. We recommend staying in Gunnison and getting out to the Black Canyon, staying in Estes Park and seeing Rocky Mountain National Park, or visiting Canon City and Pike National Forest. Our highest recommendation for a week full of adventure would be Glenwood Springs.

By this time, the Cheyenne Mountain Zoo in Colorado Springs has begun its Halloween weekends in October event called Boo at the Zoo. This fun event is great for children to experience the zoo at nighttime. They can dress up, collect candy from different booths and see the animals in their exhibits and even some being escorted through the park.

Fourth Week

The fourth week of October in Colorado may start to feel a little colder than earlier in the month, the Fall leaves may be fading and the snowfall will begin to pick up in most parts. Despite this, temperatures and the dry, warm air during the day could still make for a great hike or bike ride, or even paragliding or sky diving adventure.

Skiers should have their spick of a few different natural mountain runs, as well as a few resorts, as the higher altitude areas will have built enough snow to begin hosting ski fanatics. The conditions will not be as good as they would be in the Winter, but it will be fun for those with the highest ability levels.

The capitol city of Denver is a perfect place to be in the last week of October. Denver is a nice city to visit any time of year, but it’s best when the Summer and Winter crowds aren’t filling it. Halloween events and Fall festivities are going on all over town, including Boo at the Zoo in the Denver Zoo and Glow in the Gardens at Denver Botanical Gardens.

October in Colorado is not very busy, making a great vacation better with lower crowds. The Fall atmosphere with brilliantly colored foliage and festivals galore will make a trip in October one for the books. The most notable part about visiting Colorado in October, aside from the Autumn splendor, are the festivals being held around the state to celebrate the Fall and Halloween holiday.

If you were planning to visit Colorado in the Fall with mild days and chilly nights, October is the ideal time to go. It’s slightly cooler weather than September, with minimal rain and snow at high altitudes . U.S. News took into account a number of factors, including the variety of attractions, as well as the opinions of experts and travelers, to determine the best places to visit in Colorado. Rocky Mountain National Park

Take a trip to Rocky Mountain National Park to see for yourself why it is one of the most-visited national parks in the country. Hike among sky-high peaks or the park's 100-plus lakes, or swap your boots for a pair of skis or snowshoes in winter. If you'd rather explore from the comfort of your own vehicle, drive the scenic Trail Ridge Road (open seasonally) and feel on top of the world. At its highest point, the road reaches an elevation of more than 12,000 feet. What's more, this park is ideal for a camping adventure . But book early: A timed entry permit is required in the summer.

Colorado's most populous city is also its cultural hub. While you can go just about anywhere in Colorado to find outdoor adventures galore, in Denver you get the best of both worlds. The city is filled with top-notch museums, lively sports venues, prime shopping streets and an unmatched brewery scene. Meanwhile, just outside city limits, you'll enjoy easy access to the Rockies, as well as the photogenic Mount Evans Scenic Byway. For an unforgettable experience, catch a show at the Red Rocks Amphitheatre, a unique open-air concert venue with stunning views of Colorado's famous red rocks.

Telluride may not be large in size, but it is big on outdoor fun and adventure, which is why it's named one of the best small towns in the USA . Best known for its highly regarded ski slopes, Telluride offers 2,000-plus skiable acres and terrain suitable for everyone from beginners to experts. Meanwhile, hikers and cyclists flood the trails, paragliders soar through the air and festivalgoers attend the town's plethora of food-, music- and film-focused events during the warmer months. For some of Telluride's best panoramas, drive the San Juan Skyway or ride the gondola to Mountain Village.

Whether you are looking for an adventurous getaway in the Rocky Mountains or a luxurious spa vacation, this small town in northwestern Colorado fits the bill. Glenwood Springs visitors can soak up some rays while horseback riding, whitewater rafting or hiking the popular Hanging Lake Trail. If you'd like to take the thrills up a notch, make time for Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park, which features cave tours, an alpine coaster and more. Later, soothe your aching muscles at one of the town's acclaimed spas, which utilize the region's natural hot springs in their treatments.

The former home of the Ancestral Pueblo people, Mesa Verde National Park contains about 5,000 of America's best-preserved archaeological sites, including 600 cliff dwellings. First-time visitors should prioritize the famous Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America. Many of the sites can only be accessed by ranger-led tours that may involve quite a bit of walking, climbing and, in some cases, crawling, so travelers should keep their physical health and limitations in mind before visiting. Still, the park's rich history makes the sometimes strenuous journeys well worth the effort.

Remnants of Breckenridge's history as a mining hub give the town a distinct aesthetic. The Rocky Mountains that serve as the town's backdrop, the Victorian-era architecture in the Historic District and the year-round festivals and events all contribute to the town's charm. Plus, the locale's thousands of acres of skiable terrain and the area's long ski season make Breckenridge a winter travel destination for the books. When the powder melts, the verdant vegetation that floods the trails make Breck (as locals call it) magical. What's more, the craft beer scene is an attraction in its own right.

Powder hounds take note: While it may not be as glamorous as some of its Colorado counterparts, Steamboat Springs is still an excellent destination for a ski vacation . After all, it maintains the nickname of Ski Town, USA. Here, travelers can take advantage of nearly 3,000 acres of skiable terrain covered in snow so light it's commonly called Champagne Powder snow. Steamboat Springs is equally impressive when it's dotted with wildflowers in spring and summer or brimming with foliage come fall. After a long day of hiking, biking or shredding powder, visitors can head to Strawberry Park Hot Springs to soothe aching muscles with a massage or a soak in a thermal pool.

Pagosa Springs' best-known attraction is – you guessed it – its renowned hot springs. Located along the banks of the San Juan River in southwestern Colorado, this small mountain town is home to the world's deepest geothermal hot spring, the Mother Spring aquifer, so it comes as no surprise that travelers flock here looking to soak their stress away. But this alluring Colorado destination has more to offer than just incredible hot springs. Here, travelers can participate in a range of outdoor activities, including mountain biking, hiking, skiing, rafting, horseback riding, fishing and more.  

Sitting in southwestern Colorado about 20 miles from the New Mexico border, Durango packs a punch for adventure travelers. Pastimes like hiking, mountain biking and skiing are popular here, and thrill-seekers won't want to miss a white-water rafting tour down the Animas River. Meanwhile, history buffs will love strolling through Durango's vibrant downtown, which boasts a variety of restaurants, art galleries and shops. Another must-do activity is riding the Durango & Silverton Narrow Gauge Railroad. Here, travelers can enjoy the breathtaking beauty of San Juan National Forest aboard an authentic steam locomotive.

With recreational activities galore and a laid-back, welcoming atmosphere, Buena Vista is one of Colorado's best under-the-radar travel destinations. Spend your time relaxing in Buena Vista's natural hot springs, which are some of the hottest in Colorado. Or, go for a drive along the Collegiate Peaks Scenic and Historic Byway for unforgettable mountain views. Meanwhile, if you want something more adventurous, Buena Vista is a great base for hiking 14ers (mountains exceeding 14,000 feet), and you can also try biking, off-roading or white-water rafting. Thanks to Buena Vista's valley location, these activities are typically available year-round.

Colorado's version of the Grand Canyon features some of the state's most stunning views. Carved by the Gunnison River millions of years ago, the Black Canyon's more than 2,000-foot depth has impressed spectators for centuries, including the Ute Tribe who once called the canyon home. Now, along with its incredible scenery, parkgoers can enjoy fishing in the Black Canyon's highly regarded waters, climbing its towering rock formations and hiking or skiing its impressive trails. At night, attention shifts from the rocks and river below to the sky above when visitors can stargaze in this International Dark Sky Park.

Known as both the last great Colorado ski town and the wildflower capital of Colorado, Crested Butte beckons to outdoorsy types year-round. In winter, skiers and snowboarders will find trails for all skill levels, though the town is most famous for its extreme terrain and steep slopes. When temperatures rise, visitors can trade in their skis or snowboards for mountain bikes to take advantage of Crested Butte's hundreds of miles of bike trails. Arrive in July to see the town burst with color and partake in the Crested Butte Wildflower Festival's activities.

Nestled against the Sangre de Cristo Mountains, Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve offers a unique outdoor experience. Visitors can sled down the tallest sand dunes in North America or float down the park's stretch of Medano Creek. Hiking, fat biking and horseback riding are other fun ways to explore the area's diverse ecosystems. And at night, travelers can admire the unfiltered night sky while camping. Great Sand Dunes is open year-round, but keep in mind that winter can be chilly and summer can bring scorching sand and thunderstorms, so parkgoers should plan their trips accordingly.

If you're looking to splurge during ski season, Aspen is the place to be. This small town is conveniently tucked between four renowned ski spots – Snowmass, Aspen Mountain, Buttermilk and Aspen Highlands – that offer quality slopes for all levels of skiers. Not only that, but the town features the crème de la crème of luxury resorts, a growing culinary reputation (the Food & Wine Classic in Aspen is held here every summer) and an après-ski scene so appealing it'll be pretty tough to leave.

This iconic European-style ski town is a popular haven for celebrities and winter sports enthusiasts. With thousands of acres of snowy trails spread across one of the largest single-mountain resorts in the country, Vail is known for its top-notch skiing and snowboarding. But there is more to the town than just its slopes. When the snow melts and the temperatures rise, Vail's Epic Discovery area invites visitors to engage in other outdoor activities like zip lining, rock climbing and mountain coaster rides. Those looking for less adrenaline-inducing entertainment should check out the Betty Ford Alpine Gardens and central Vail's boutiques.

Feel as if you've journeyed back in time during a visit to Dinosaur National Monument. Spread across Colorado and Utah, this protected area is known for its archaeological treasures. You won't find any dinosaur bones on the Colorado side, but budding archaeologists can test their skills by looking for small sea creature fossils on the Harpers Corner Trail. This side of the park is also a prime spot for outdoor activities like hiking, river rafting, cross-country skiing and snowmobiling. For breathtaking views of the surrounding canyons, go for a spin on the Harpers Corner Scenic Drive.

Colorado Springs stands out from its mountainous counterparts because it's not a ski destination. But what the city lacks in slopes it more than makes up for in incredible hiking areas like Pikes Peak, the mountain that inspired Katharine Lee Bates to write "America the Beautiful," and magnificent natural landmarks like the Garden of the Gods. Mix that in with a good helping of small-town charm, delectable restaurants and a diverse array of attractions (including the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Training Center), and Colorado Springs has all the makings of a great vacation.

Although Boulder is Denver's slightly smaller neighbor, it is no less impressive. With both the Rocky Mountains and the Flatirons in the background, Boulder combines all of the relaxation of an outdoor escape with the energy of a city. Nature lovers will feel right at home while hiking and biking the city's trails or tubing down its stretch of Boulder Creek. Those looking for more urban entertainment can explore Boulder's beer trails or shop and dine at Pearl Street Mall's boutiques and restaurants.

Where to stay in Denver, gateway to the Rockies

The Mile High City is redefining itself with a raft of innovative hotels.

The Mile High City, so named because it stands one mile above sea level, is scaling new heights. Situated where the Great Plains meet the Rocky Mountains, Denver was founded as a gold-mining town in 1858 — a history commemorated by the gold-plated dome of the state capitol. Today, it’s known for its gleaming skyscrapers and is one of the fastest-growing cities in the US, with urbanites and travellers alike drawn to its art trails, craft beer and elevated food scene (featuring everything from cheese-filled khachapuri bread to beef tacos), plus its boundless opportunities for outdoor pursuits.  

1. Thompson Denver

A number of hotels have recently popped up across the city — and Thompson Denver, in LoDo (Lower Downtown), within walking distance of the Denver Art Museum, Urban Station’s upmarket restaurants and the cool Dairy Block district, is one of the most exciting. The interiors marry the city’s heritage with the great outdoors, with a palette of browns, deep greens and granite greys. There are also fun touches like saddle-leather headboards in its mid-century-inspired rooms. Since opening in 2022, Chez Maggy, the hotel’s French brasserie, has been one of the hottest dinner tickets in town. It’s headed up by chef Ludo Lefebvre, who uses native ingredients with flair in dishes such as bison tartare and Coloradan lamb chops with dandelion puree. The mood-lit Reynard Social bar is good for cocktails like tybert’s tailspin, made with Barr Hill Tom Cat gin, St Germain, Aperol, honey and fresh lemon. From $299 (£238).  

Next to Civic Center Park, Populus is set to open its doors this summer. Its exterior is inspired by the bark of Colorado’s native aspen trees, while its 265 rooms are decorated in shades of sand and terracotta. Low-impact materials have been used in construction; the wooden slats on display in the lobby, for instance, are reclaimed fencing. The plan also includes a promise to plant 5,000 acres of trees.

3. The Rally Hotel

This 182-room hotel in the LoDo district hits a home run with its subtle sporty design: the tasteful, museum-worthy displays of signed memorabilia and red-stitch wall accents are a nod to the neighbouring Coors Field baseball stadium. The rooms put a playful twist on the traditional, blending tobacco leathers and woods with pops of purple. From $299 (£238).  

4. Limelight Denver

Hotel brand Limelight added this property to its portfolio last summer. Guest rooms, some of which offer views towards the Rockies, are awash with knotty natural woods and leather furniture. The hotel sits beside Union Station, and its restaurant, Citizen Rail, takes its design cues from its neighbour. Coloradan produce and seasonal ingredients feature on the menu. From $350 (£278).

The 12 Best Places to Visit in Colorado

Y ou could spend decades-as I have-exploring Colorado's stunning scenery and top attractions and still have more to see and do. No single trip can cover everything that makes the state a traveler's dream destination. AFAR's roundup of things to see and do in Colorado offered 16 tips to get you started, including driving the peak-to-peak scenic byway, visiting Denver Art Museum, and soaking in Iron Mountain Hot Springs. However, if you want to hit the highlights, here are your main targets, divided up by season.

The best places to visit in Colorado in fall

Colorado is spectacular year-round, but autumn's colors and temperatures make it a particularly magical time to visit.

Great Sand Dunes National Park and Preserve

Visiting the dunes typically means overnighting at the park's campground , because few accommodations exist near this remote spot some 230 miles south of Denver. But campers are rewarded with dusk and dawn's light shows on the sand dunes, which ripple beneath the sawtooth Sangre de Cristo mountains. Summers are scorching, but in fall, sand surfaces remain comfortable all day. Scramble across the dunes, or rent a sandboard to surf the slopes like waves.

Dunton Hot Springs

Dunton is the quintessential Colorado getaway for those who can afford it ($1,400 per night is typical). Guests cozy into hand-built log cabins that combine historic patina with western art and worldly comforts like sustainably made beds and linens. Rates include food and drink that make every meal feel special-think roasted pork with charred leek grits followed by poached rhubarb panna cotta-but the steaming springs are this getaway's raison d'être. Views from the rustic yet luxe bathhouse showcase aspen groves that turn amber in autumn, and one guest cabin (Well House) includes its own spring-fed soaking tub.

Rocky Mountain National Park

Most of this park's 4.3 million annual visitors flock here in summer, so I go in September for fewer traffic backups on Trail Ridge Road (a must-do drive traversing treeless alpine tundra). Fall is also mating season for the park's elk herd, and the possibility of hearing bulls' distinctive bugles adds extra magic to any hike. I always glimpse elk along the Moraine Park Loop, a 5.5-mile circuit that can be shortened to preference.

Snow envelopes much of the state in the winter months, turning urban areas into winter wonderlands and promising world-class outdoor activities.

Meow Wolf Convergence Station

In fall 2023, Denver's fun house of immersive art installations launched Sips (With a Z), a cocktail bar and lounge dedicated to providing "a sanctuary of chill amidst the hubbub of quantum travel." Mirrored walls reflect a mashup of classical sculpture and graffiti art, and vintage furniture provides myriad perches for pondering the installation's experiential art. The bar is only open to Meow Wolf Denver visitors and event guests. While the previous art triggered sight, sound, and touch, the new lounge also titillates our sense of taste.

Sure, it's far from major cities, but I wager that the only winter enclaves with mountain vistas that rival Telluride's are in the Alps. These jagged southwest Colorado slopes offer scenery so jawdropping, I always feel dazzled, regardless of the snow conditions. And several mountaintop eateries showcase the splendor. Perched at 11,966 feet, Alpino Vino ranks as the highest restaurant in North America and serves Italian food and wine specialties within a cozy stone and log cabin. More tableside panoramas (and an award-winning wine list) await at Allred's at 10,551 feet.

Silverthorne

Once little more than a refueling stop for motorists traveling Interstate 70, Exit 205 is now an appealing home base for three nearby Colorado ski resorts (Arapahoe Basin, Keystone, and Breckenridge) and a destination in its own right. Stay at Hotel Indigo , the chain's first mountain property housing an upscale tequila bar and indoor swimming pool. Go snowshoeing or Nordic skiing at Raven Golf Club (free to the public; rent gear at Gore Range Sports) and enjoy après at the Bluebird Market food hall , where weekends find live bands entertaining drinkers at the central bar.

Visitor numbers drop during the spring, but Colorado still puts on a show as flowers bloom and the arts scene wows guests.

Casa Bonita

Coloradoans Trey Parker and Matt Stone (creators of the South Park animated TV series) spent $40 million to renovate this Denver icon of Mexican food and carnivalesque stunts. Summer 2023 kicked off its much-anticipated reopening. Diners (up to 2,100 of them, at capacity) still line up with trays for meals, now designed by James Beard–nominated chef Dana Rodriguez. Cliff diving continues in the waterfall-fed pool, and the multi-level dining room delivers more spectacle than ambiance.

Crowds taper but deals abound during this destination's shoulder season. April and May are when Aspen's celebrated restaurants often offer discounted menus and drink specials, and at these elevations (the Snowmass base village sits at 8,104 feet), snow blankets the slopes well beyond the resorts' mid-April closing date, making for prime ski conditions-and rowdy parties. At Cloud Nine Alpine Bistro , the springtime ritual includes uncorking staggering quantities of champagne on the summit-ringed outdoor deck.

Idyllic weather and blooming cactus make spring my favorite time to visit Colorado's canyon country, and Fruita is the best home base. From here, it's a 15-minute drive to the sculpted red rock sandstone spires of Colorado National Monument and 5 minutes to world-famous mountain bike trails. Fruita's walkable downtown includes the Hot Tomato , delivering Jersey-style pizza that's good as gospel. Live music often enlivens the pedestrian block, and for sips, there are wineries in Palisade, 30 minutes east.

Colorado's hiking and biking trails come into their own during the warmer months while road-tripping offers an easy way to see much of the state-in an EV on many of the scenic byways .

Crested Butte

After 25 years in Colorado, I still gape at the beauty of Crested Butte , because in a state that's chockablock with pretty views, this town tops the list. Sheer peaks rise up beside the streets' grid, where colorful, mining-era Victorians line the sidewalks. No highway noise ruins the mountains' quiet, and only merry sounds emerge from main street bars and eateries. The surrounding trails wind through aspen groves and meadows that are deservedly famous for July's display of wildflowers.

Bachelor Gulch

Come summer, the Bachelor Gulch base area of Beaver Creek ski resort becomes the scene of a daily lawn and pool party that encapsulates what's splendid about Colorado. Views include aspen-covered mountainsides, and adventures on foot or bike follow trails leading into wildflower meadows. Play a round of cornhole on the lawn, then relocate to Wyld 's patio for plates showcasing Colorado-grown produce. Stay at the Ritz-Carlton Bachelor Gulch (renovated in 2022) to cool off in its outdoor pool and sip rosé from the surrounding loungers.

Fort Collins

Visit during Colorado State's summer break, and you won't have to elbow your way into this city's esteemed breweries. (Crooked Stave makes some of my favorite sours.) Nationally known New Belgium Brewing organizes the annual Tour de Fat each August, when a parade of 20,000 wildly costumed cyclists pedal the streets. I make the 100-year-old Armstrong Hotel my downtown home base and stroll from its classy-hip rooms to such downtown shops as Scrumpy's Hard Cider Bar, which pours drink made from local homeowners' apple trees.

Downtown Denver

Denver has one of the most walkable downtowns in the nation. But you can save on shoe leather by riding the free shuttle bus on the  16th Street Mall  –  it makes everything in downtown easy to reach and stops at every corner. Renowned architect I.M. Pei designed the gray and pink granite pathway to resemble the pattern of a diamondback rattlesnake. This area is home to some of the most popular places to visit in Denver, like Denver Union Station and the LoDo Historic District. You can easily spend a full day sightseeing at these downtown Denver attractions. After dark, horse-drawn carriages clatter up and down the mall.

Larimer Square

Victorian buildings house specialty boutiques and unique chef-driven restaurants with one-of-a-kind stores and distinctive fashion and exclusive offerings in this urban shopping and dining district.

Lower Downtown   (LoDo) Historic District

Denver's happening historic district is filled with turn-of-the-century warehouses, now home to 90 brewpubs, sports bars, restaurants and rooftop cafes. While you're in Lower Downtown (LoDo), stop by  Rockmount Ranch Wear  for a snap-button Western shirt at the store where they were invented; or sip a handcrafted beer at the  Wynkoop Brewing Company , Denver's first brewpub opened by former Denver Mayor and Colorado Gov. John Hickenlooper.

Denver Union Station

Denver Union Station  has undergone a massive restoration that transformed the landmark into a transportation, dining, shopping and entertainment hub, and hotel. The historic, Beaux-Arts 1914 train terminal is now a foodie destination, with a dozen restaurants and bars, from farm-to-table favorite  Mercantile dining + provision  to the  Terminal Bar , situated in the station's old ticket windows. A handful of local retailers includes a branch of the popular  Tattered Cover Book Store .  Union Station is also fulfilling its original role as a major ground transportation hub, serving as an Amtrak, light rail and shuttle bus station with direct rail service to  Denver International Airport .

Denver art museum.

Denver Art Museum  recently celebrated the reopening of the Martin Building (formerly known as the North Building). First opened in 1971, the fortress-like structure was designed by Italian architect Gio Ponti and Denver-based James Sudler Associates. The building has been fully renovated with expanded gallery space, plus stunning views of the city skyline and Rocky Mountains. The building showcases Asian art, Indigenous arts of North America, Northwest Coast and Alaska Native, European and American art before 1900, Latin American and art of the ancient Americas, photography, textile art and fashion, and Western American art collections. The museum's other striking building resembles a titanium crystal with peaks and shards designed by Daniel Libeskind.

Clyfford Still Museum

Clyfford Still, considered one of the most important painters of the 20th century, was among the first generation of Abstract Expressionist artists. The Clyfford Still Museum , which opened at the end of 2011, was founded to promote the late artist's work and legacy. Still's estate – 2,400 artworks – has been sealed off from the public since 1980.

One of the best museums in Denver is the city itself. Denver street artists have been busy brightening (and enlightening) the urban landscape for decades by making canvases of the city’s alleyways, building exteriors, warehouses, garage doors and storefronts. The Blue Bear at the Colorado Convention Center

The   Colorado Convention Center  is home to “I See What You Mean,” AKA the giant  Blue Bear   that peers into the Center’s interior. Created by Colorado-based artist Lawrence Argent, the curious blue bear stands 40 feet tall – you can walk under it and get a great photo.

The History Colorado Center , one of Denver’s newest cultural attractions, is designed to ignite imaginations of all ages about Colorado history through high-tech and hands-on exhibits, programs for children and adults, and special events.

Colorado State Capitol

Stand exactly 5,280 feet above sea level (one mile high!) on the west steps of the  Colorado State Capitol , then climb to the rotunda for a panorama of snowcapped peaks. It is against state law to block the view of the 200 named mountains visible from the dome. Free tours are available on weekdays. 

Colorado Railroad Museum

Surrounded by towering Western buttes, the  Colorado Railroad Museum  combines a spectacular location with more than 100 narrow and standard gauge locomotives, cabooses and cars. Exhibits include a working Roundhouse, model railroads, photographs and artifacts, much of it housed in a replica of an 1880s-style depot. Train rides every Saturday on the Galloping Goose take guests on a third of mile loop of track, while "Steam ups" and special events including "A Day Out With Thomas" occur throughout the year. 

Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave

Welcome to the Wild West! Buffalo Bill Cody's exciting story as Pony Express rider, army scout, buffalo hunter and showman comes to life at the  Buffalo Bill Museum & Grave , high atop  Lookout Mountain . Enjoy views of the snowcapped Rockies in one direction, the Great Plains in the other. For those with strong nerves, drive to the museum on the hairpin  Lariat Loop Drive  ... then continue to I-70, exit 250, to see   a live herd of buffalo .

Confluence park.

Denver was founded at  Confluence Park  as a gold mining camp in 1858. Today, the river park is the heart of Denver's  bike trail network , and is surrounded by attractions. Ride the  Platte River Trolley  to the  Downtown Aquarium  to see stingrays and sharks and The  Children's Museum of Denver at Marsico Campus , with dozens of interactive "playscapes" for younger kids; eat and drink in the nearby neighborhoods of  Riverfront ,  LoHi  and  Highlands . City Park, Denver's largest park, has several lakes, spectacular mountain views, a public golf course, flower gardens and a hiking/jogging trail that is exactly one mile high. It's also where you'll find Denver Zoo and the Denver Museum of Nature & Science  (DMNS). 

Washington Park

Known locally as Wash Park, it's consistently picked by residents as their favorite. The long, rectangular park has two lakes, paddle boat rentals, bike rentals, shade trees, a two-mile jogging path, mountain views and a huge area for volleyball tournaments, but it's the gardens that people like the best. Dogs on leashes are welcome and on most days there are almost as many canines as humans. Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park

The only downtown theme park in America is really two parks in one: on one side of Elitch Gardens Theme & Water Park, experience 53 thrill rides, including looping roller coasters; on the other side, cool off in a wet 'n' wild water park with tubes waterslides and wave pools. The park is open from early May to early November.

"Behind the Seams" tours of  Coors Field  are available during the offseason and provide a behind-the-scenes look at one of the premier ballparks in Major League Baseball. All tours begin at Gate D (20th & Blake Street). Tours last 75-80 minutes and cover a distance of about one mile. All tours are accessible for guests with disabilities. Right next door to Coors Field is McGregor Square, which shouldn't be missed by sports fans. Come see the  Colorado Sports Hall of Fame , a free museum honoring Colorado sports legends. Open Thursday-Saturday (summer Monday-Saturday) from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Also, visit  Empower Field at Mile High . Tours begin each half-hour and are 75 minutes in length. This is your chance to see the 'back of the house" where the Broncos play.

Echo Lake and  Mount Blue Sky

From I-70 take Exit 240 and then Colorado Hwy. 103 to Echo Lake Mount Blue Sky Scenic Byway , the highest paved road in North America, climbs 9,000 feet from Denver, passing through five life zones en route to the 14,264-foot high summit. This is one of Colorado's 54 fourteeners (peaks that climb to 14,000 feet and above), and one of only two in the nation that you can drive up. Stop at  Echo Lake  along the way for hiking trails, fishing, picnic tables and an unusual eight-sided log cabin restaurant. At timberline,  Denver Botanic Gardens  maintains a trail that winds through wildflowers. Due to snow, the Mount Blue Sky Highway is generally open to the top only between Memorial Day and Labor Day. 

Home to the  University of Colorado ,  Boulder  has been described as the "the city nestled between the mountains and reality." A recent study pegged it as the "happiest" city in America. You'll find out why when you stroll past the shops, cafes and street performers on the  Pearl Street Mall , or take a hike on the city's 200 miles of trails. April 8 may be your best chance to see a total solar eclipse for two decades.

If you could look down on Earth from space during April’s total solar eclipse, you would see the moon cast its shadow on the planet, creating a dark blob that will dart across the land from Mexico into Texas and up toward Maine and Canada.

And if you are lucky enough to be looking up from Earth in the moon’s shadow, you’ll see the sky fall dark, it will get colder and quieter, and for a special three to four minutes, you’ll be able to view the sun’s glowing white corona.

For many people in North America, April 8 is likely to be the best opportunity in their lifetime to experience a total solar eclipse. Most in the contiguous United States, however, will only experience a partial eclipse.

Whether you see a total or partial eclipse all depends on where you are to view the phenomenon.

An estimated 31.5 million people live within the roughly 115-mile wide path of totality that stretches from Mazatlán, Mexico, to Newfoundland, Canada. Inside the path, as the sun, moon and Earth become perfectly aligned, the moon blocks the sun and casts its shadow on Earth. The farther away you are from the center of this path, the less the moon will obscure the sun. People within the contiguous United States who are outside the path will see a partial eclipse.

“During a total eclipse, you’re plunged into the moon’s shadow. You’re in this eerie twilight. You can see bright stars and planets in the sky. And of course, the biggest attraction is you see the sun’s solar corona. You don’t see any of those things in the partial eclipse, even at 99 percent,” said Fred Espenak, a retired NASA astrophysicist who has experienced 30 total solar eclipses. “It’s the difference between night and day.”

The difference is so enormous, even veteran eclipse viewers often don’t have words that do justice to totality.

“You think you know what you’re going to experience, but you have no idea,” said Kate Russo, an author, psychologist and eclipse chaser who will be seeing her 14th total solar eclipse in April. “I always say it’s like the ineffable,” she added. “Sometimes things happen to us that we just have no words to describe.”

Inside the path, as the moon creeps closer to fully blocking the sun, the temperature drops and the light and wind change. Insects and animals may fall silent. Some birds might return to home to roost. And even though you’re expecting it, Russo said, it’s still so surprising.

“You notice the darkening that’s coming toward you, and that’s really eerie and it puts the hair on the back of your neck,” she said. “It really is quite exciting and thrilling, and you just can’t believe that it’s going to happen.”

The fleeting moments of totality will last anywhere from a few seconds to over four minutes, depending where you are inside the path. Mexico and 12 U.S. states have cities that will get duration times longer than four minutes. The longest totality will be in Torreón, Mexico, and will last 4 minutes and 28 seconds . Compared with other eclipses that typically only last a couple of minutes, that’s quite a long time. In 2017, the longest duration was near Carbondale, Ill., where the eclipse lasted for 2 minutes and 42 seconds.

For one of her books , Russo interviewed first-time eclipse viewers asking how totality made them feel. Their responses aligned with her own experiences: Within totality, the awe, connection and euphoria that people experience leaves them feeling both insignificant and a part of something greater than themselves, Russo said.

“We’re only on this Earth for just a split second of time. And I think these moments actually highlight that for you,” she said. “It puts all our other concerns or problems just into perspective.”

Within totality, there’s a lot to see when you remove your safety glasses. April’s eclipse will coincide with heightened solar activity. As the moon blocks the bright face of the sun, it reveals the sun’s outer atmosphere, called the corona, and can show plumes of gas, referred to as streamers, escaping into space. These look like bright streaks or feathery rays flowing around the edge of the sun. Prominences, or magnetic loops that glow bright pink or red around the inner atmosphere, will also probably be more visible. Venus and Jupiter can also be seen on either side of the sun.

Outside of totality, the partial eclipse — even a view with 99 percent of the sun obscured — must be viewed safely with a simple viewer or safety glasses . According to Espenak, once you’re out of the path of totality, there’s not a big difference in what you’ll see. “It’s just a thinner slice of the sun that’s visible. It’s only when you make that transformation from the partial eclipse to a total eclipse that you get this dramatic change.”

Patrick Poitevin, an eclipse chaser and astronomer from Derbyshire, England, has experienced 24 total eclipses. Poitevin, who said he’s always looking for a “different” or “extreme” view, will travel to Mazatlán in April. He added that there’s lots to see along the edge or just inside or outside the path of totality using a telescope with a hydrogen-alpha filter. “What a show!” he wrote of an eclipse last year in Kosrae, Micronesia, in which he saw from a mile outside of the path a nearly 360-degree view of the chromosphere, a colored layer of the sun’s atmosphere, just above the solar surface. “Mesmerising,” he added.

Eclipses over the next 50 years

While total solar eclipses happen about every 18 months , they are often in remote parts of the world, including the middle of the ocean. By contrast, this eclipse will pass through several densely populated cities. “It’s not that common that you get a total eclipse going through your home country,” Espenak said. “We had the 2017 eclipse, and before that it was 1979. So that was a 38-year gap.”

The next total solar eclipse visible across the contiguous United States won’t be until 2045 and will travel from California through Florida. After that, a 2078 eclipse will pass through nine Southern states.

“If you can’t travel [to totality], still go out and enjoy the partial eclipse,” Russo advises. To view the eclipse in April, she will be heading to Uvalde County, Tex., where she has held workshops and helped local officials with planning. “This is your chance,” she said, “an easy chance to get into the path.”

Espenak, whose work at NASA included eclipse predictions, met his wife, Patricia, during a 1995 eclipse in India. For 25 years, Patricia had struck out on seeing totality — her view was either partial or cloudy. It was only in India where she finally saw totality. About this story

We created the eclipse animations by interpolating the moon’s path, calculating its trajectory based on the initial, midpoint and final positions during the eclipse.

Eclipse animation data was sourced from the Five Millennium Canon of Solar Eclipses Database by Xavier M. Jubier, which is based on NASA’s eclipse predictions by Fred Espenak. The algorithms used were drawn from “Elements of Solar Eclipses 1951-2200” and “Astronomical Algorithms.” Eclipse track data was obtained from NASA’s Scientific Visualization Studio.

Eclipse city view animation speeds are not reflective of actual eclipse durations. Half of the city of San Antonio, Texas falls within totality and half falls outside of totality. So depending on where you are inside the city, the sun may not be 100% obscured as it is depicted in the animation.
