One way to cool off (or work up a sweat) is whitewater rafting. According to Uncover Colorado , rafting season usually lasts from June to September — the earlier you go, the more intense it will be, thanks to fresh snowmelt.
Fort Collins residents are lucky enough to have a river in their backyard, but colorado.com notes there are other options reasonably close to Northern Colorado. Here's where you can go:
Cache la Poudre River — Fort Collins
According to Visit Fort Collins , rapids on the Poudre River range from Class I (beginner) to Class V (expert), although most rafting trips stay between Classes I and IV.
"The Poudre is a newer river, so it's very narrow, shallow, and rocky," Erin Maskill, a raft guide at Rocky Mountain Adventures , told Townsquare NoCo. "This creates a very fast-flowing, technical river with continuous rapids. You can expect big rapids and high adrenaline, especially at high water."
Where to Book Your Trip:
- Rocky Mountain Adventures — half to full-day Class II, III, and IV trips
- A1 Wildwater — half to full-day Class II, III, and IV trips
- A Wanderlust Adventure — half-day Class II, III, and IV trips
- Mountain Whitewater — half to two-day Class II, III, and IV trips
Clear Creek — Idaho Springs
According to Clear Creek County , Clear Creek has more rapids per mile than most other rivers in Colorado.
"Certain 'whitewater' zones have been given class distinctions based on how difficult they are to navigate while rafting," reads the website. "Enjoy spectacular views and the opportunity to spot Colorado wildlife while you paddle along."
- Mile Hi Rafting — half-day Class II, III, and IV trips
- AVA — half to full-day Level 3 to Level 6 trips
- Clear Creek Rafting Company — half to full-day Class II, III, and IV+ trips
- Colorado Adventure Center — half-day Class II, III, and IV trips
- Browns Canyon Rafting — half to full-day Class II, III, IV, and V trips
Blue River — Breckenridge
According to Uncover Colorado , the Lower Blue River offers a casual rafting experience, while the Upper Blue River is more intense.
"Trips along the Blue River are not very strenuous in comparison to some of Colorado's other whitewater rafting destinations," reads the website. "The river passes through some of the most quintessential Rocky Mountain territory."
Where to Book Your Trip:
- Performance Tours — half-day Class II and III trip
- AVA — third-day Level 3 trip
- Breckenridge Whitewater Rafting — half-day Class II trip
Upper Colorado River — Winter Park
Uncover Colorado reports that the Colorado River is one of the most popular rafting rivers in the U.S.
"There are several popular sections of the Colorado River to raft," reads the website. "The Gore Canyon section of the Upper Colorado River has some of the fiercest Class V rapids in the country and the steepest gradient drop per mile in Colorado."
Where to Book:
- MAD Adventures — half-day Class I, II, and III trip
Overall, it's important to remember to be safe — and have fun.
"Underestimating the power of the water and what's beneath is where most injuries come from," said Maskill. "Otherwise, if you're with a team of experienced guides, you are pretty safe out on the river and will have a great time."

Fort Collins Rafting Trips & Estes Park Rafting Trips on the Cache La Poudre River
Whitewater rafting vacations on Colorado’s only “Wild and Scenic River”
Mountain Whitewater is proud to have a special use permit from the Roosevelt National Forest. The permit guidelines keep river use low so that the Cache La Poudre (pronounced poo-dur) delivers an exceptional wilderness rafting experience. In fact, many Coloradoans consider it the best canyon and river in Colorado. Check out the Poudre page to find out how special Colorado’s only “Wild and Scenic” river really is, or just book a Fort Collins rafting or Estes Park rafting adventure and find out for yourself.
Conveniently located only about 80 minutes from Denver and Estes Park, the Poudre offers some of the closest, most exciting, and still somewhat unknown, whitewater rafting in the state. The river starts in the snow-capped peaks of Rocky Mountain National Park near Estes Park , then twists, turns, and tumbles through cliffs and rock spires. Its almost continuous class II, III, and IV rapids keep your adrenaline flowing. The chances to see eagles, deer, moose, black bear, mink and bighorn sheep will keep your eyes open.
Mountain Whitewater uses state-of-the-art rafting equipment and employs the most experienced group of guides on the river.
This is what whitewater rafting is all about in Colorado! Fun – Rapids – Scenery – Team Building – Excitement – Adventure – Family – Memories – Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee!

EXPERIENCED, TOP-RATED COLORADO RAFTING GUIDES
As one of the first outfitters to take guests paddling on Clear Creek, we have years of experience and have developed a special affection for this waterway’s narrow, technical nature. The Creek shoots out of the Colorado mountains high atop the Continental Divide and rushes toward Denver at a steady clip. It’s rafting in Colorado as you’d expect it…exhilarating and stunning at the same time.
The best thing about running rivers in Colorado is the wide variety of difficulty levels you can choose from. White water rafting in Colorado has something for everyone from young children to experienced white water enthusiasts. When choosing a white water raft trip, you should always keep in mind the ability of every member of your group. It is a good idea to choose an adventure that is geared to the person with the lowest ability level. Remember, every river adventure is fun, even the most mellow experience. Rafting rivers is more than just wild white water and extreme excitement; it is the total experience that creates memories of a lifetime. A positive Colorado white water rafting experience can include white water excitement as well as wildlife, beautiful views, rich history told by knowledgeable guides and, most of all, enjoying a comfortable experience with friends and family. Keeping this in mind, it might be necessary to adjust your expectations to accommodate everyone’s comfort levels.
This will begin to help you choose the trip best suited to your group’s abilities.

Colorado Adventure Center offers white water rafting adventures for every experience level, from scenic float trips on which you get a chance to view wildlife or sit quietly listening to nature, to heart-stopping white water rapids with crashing waves and vigorous paddling. To enhance your rafting experience, why not get familiar with Clear Creek and the class of rapids you will be navigating. Here is a little history on Clear Creek and its different sections of white water.
Clear Creek is the 2nd most rafted river in Colorado, and for good reason. With more rapids per mile than any other river in Colorado, Clear Creek offers world class rafting conveniently located just 40 minutes from Downtown Denver. Clear Creek is a tributary of the South Platte River, approximately 66 miles long. The creek flows through Clear Creek Canyon in the Rocky Mountains, directly west of Denver, and descends through a long gorge where it emerges on the Colorado Eastern Plains and eventually joins the South Platte River. Clear Creek is unusual because it is actually a stream, but named a “creek” and is fed by stream called a “river” – the Fall River, which empties into Clear Creek along I-70 west of Idaho Springs.
Clear Creek is famous for its location as one of the most intense early gold mining hot spots during the Colorado Gold Rush of 1859. Clear Creek also provided the route for the Colorado Central Railroad and later, U.S. Highway 6 and I-70.
The Clear Creek riverbed is composed of blasted river rock as a result of the gold mining industry. This is what creates the rumbling rapids through Clear Creek Canyon as water flows over river rock and makes for challenging raft trips as you navigate through these giant boulders and class II – IV rapids. Appropriately named by French hunters on the Stephen H. Long expedition as early as 1820, Clear Creek was originally called Cannonball Creek – after the oversized river rock. In the 1830s, Clear Creek became known as Vasquez Fork and later, Vasquez River, after fur trader Louis Vasquez who built his fort at the mouth of Clear Creek and trapped along it. Clear Creek officially gained its present name from the gold rushers in 1859.
Kayakers discovered Clear Creek in the 1950s, but were chased away with the construction of I-70. Then, in 1989, commercial rafting kicked off on Clear Creek and has since become one of Colorado’s most popular white water rafting and kayaking destinations.
Clear Creek has an average gradient of 67 feet per mile and over 100 feet per mile on its advanced sections – simply meaning more rapids per mile. Clear Creek is divided into different sections according to class of rapids from perfect beginner rapids to thrilling intermediate and heart-racing advanced sections. Here at Colorado Adventure Center’s Idaho Springs Base Camp, Clear Creek typically runs from Class II to Class IV rapids, providing fast-paced, exciting white water conveniently located along I-70. Colorado Adventure Center runs beginner rafting trips between Idaho Springs and Two Bears Tap and Grill (previously historic Kermits), and intermediate and advanced trips along the neighboring historic mining towns of Dumont and Lawson.
A little further up the the hill from Denver, the Upper Clear Creek runs Class IV and V rapids , offering exhilarating white water that is both fast-paced and challenging. For even more of a challenge, the Lower Clear Creek Canyon, close to Golden, houses Class IV and V rapids. This exciting section of white water provides a great side raft trip just outside the city.. While fun to watch, this section is advanced, steep, technical, and demanding white water, and not for the faint of heart!

what our guests say
Now that you’ve learned a little history about Clear Creek and the types of rapids you will be cruising on, check out our raft trip pages and book your raft trip today!
The weather in the Colorado Rocky Mountains is very unpredictable and varies from mile to mile and minute to minute. Colorado averages over 300 days of sunshine a year. The odds are, the weather will be good. We run our Colorado white water rafting trips in all weather conditions, rain or shine, and have gear available to help keep you comfortable, even in the worst conditions. Wetsuits, neoprene booties, and splash tops can really make a big difference and make your trip a pleasurable one. Don’t forget, you’re going to get wet rafting, even on the sunniest of days. Weather is not a cause for cancellation.
Nope! Except for advanced, you can go white water rafting even if you can’t swim . Each person will be fitted with a Type-V Coast Guard-approved personal flotation device (life jacket) to be worn while on the river at all times. This life jacket is designed to float the wearer on their back with their head out of the water. Guests are instructed on the proper use of this life jacket in a safety orientation talk before departure. It does help to have some knowledge of swimming, especially in some of the more aggressive sections.
Our basecamp facility and boathouse is in Idaho Springs/Dumont right off of I-70 where we’ll meet, get you checked in, geared up, and introduce you to your guide. We provide location and directions in our reservation confirmation letter to you when you reserve your trip. Then, we take care of everything else, including transportation between the river and the basecamp. We are located at 2697 Stanley Road, Idaho Springs, CO 80452. You may call our office at 720-807-3250 for more specific directions to our basecamp.
All our guides go through extensive river training, basic first aid, CPR, and are certified by the state of Colorado. While anyone can fall out of the boat at any time, keep in mind that your chances of falling out of the raft do increase when rafting in a paddle boat and on more challenging sections of river. Rafting is an adventure sport and involves a degree of risk on the part of the participant. Although we take precautions to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable trip, we cannot be responsible for lost or damaged articles and/or personal injury. We require you to acknowledge these risks by reading and signing a liability release prior to departure. All children under the age of 18 must have signed release form from a parent or guardian. It is important for the group to choose a trip within their entire group’s limits. Read our Customer Responsibility Policy for more information.
Altitude sickness can be a problem, especially for people coming to the mountains from sea level. To prevent altitude sickness, stay hydrated by drinking extra amounts of water, and stay away from alcohol and caffeine. Altitude sickness can be serious. You may experience an upset stomach, headaches, dizziness, or shortness of breath — please inform your guide so they are aware of your symptoms and can begin treatment as soon as possible.
Our guides make a base wage similar to a bartender or wait person. General guidelines for tipping would be the same as for a bartender or a waitperson (~20%). Please do not feel obligated to tip, but if you do believe in tipping, and the guide has proven to do a great job, it is a nice way to express your appreciation, but only if you feel you had a safe, fun, and informative experience. If you did not have a pleasurable and adequate experience, we would appreciate it if you would please bring it to the attention of our management. Feedback and letters from our guests are greatly appreciated and helps us maintain the highest standard of customer service and appreciation.
You are going to get wet, so it’s a good idea to be prepared. Avoid cotton clothing, as it tends to get wet and stay wet – not to mention taking valuable warmth from your body’s surface. Bathing suits and shorts are recommended. Your best bet is loose, woven materials such as wool, polypro, fleece, micro fleece, polyester, waterproof jackets, and any other outdoor material that dries fast. Staying dry, or at least drying off fast, is the key to staying warm. Towels don’t do you much good because there is no way to keep them dry. There is limited space on the rafts, so you should limit what you bring to what you can wear. We provide wetsuits and have booties and splash tops available for rent. This equipment is designed to keep you warm and comfortable. Personal flotation devices (PFDs) and helmets are included with all rafting adventures. On some Colorado white water rafting trips, wetsuits are recommended and on others, wetsuits are required. This is to help keep you warm, comfortable and protected on your white water rafting trip.
Bring a few towels to leave in your car; you’ll be happy to have something to dry off with after white water rafting. Bring a change of dry clothes to leave in your car; our basecamps offer changing rooms so you can be comfortable after your Colorado raft adventure. Bring sunscreen, sunglasses, sunglass straps and hats that protect from the sun. If you forget, our basecamps offer these items in the retail areas where our white water rafting trips meet. Bring water for pre-rafting and post-rafting hydration. Remember, you’re in the Colorado Rockies, and it’s important to stay hydrated! We also suggest bringing cash to tip your guide. Check out our “ 10 Tips for White Water Rafting Beginners ” for more information!
This depends on what you’re interested in. If big, exciting water is what your group is looking for, then high-water season is the best time. June is traditionally high-water season . When rivers run at their peak, it can make for a big ride. Keep in mind some sections may close due to high water conditions. Most people enjoy normal run off-season, which is mid-June to early August. The water stays consistent and the days tend to be sunny and warm with the occasional afternoon rain shower. Water levels and weather are very unpredictable, so book a date that best suits the group and be prepared for the unexpected.
We require full payment at the time of reservation and our cancellation policy differs, depending on whether or not you have purchased Worry-Free Cancellation plan . We highly recommend purchasing Worry-Free Cancellation plan , as it allows you the flexibility you many need. Please click here to review our cancellation policy.
River and rapid classifications are another great way to determine the suitable age for a river trip for your group. Remember that classification can change with weather and water conditions.
- Beginner = first timers, young children
- Intermediate = aggressive first timers, teens
- Advanced = experienced paddlers looking for an adventure
This River Rapids Class Rating System is strictly a subjective scale. You can characterize a rapid by class or give a general class to a whole river even though it has several different classes of rapids within it. The class of a rapid or river can change at different water levels. The temperature of the water, the air temperature, the remoteness of the river, and the difficulty of a rescue can all influence the rapid’s class.
- Class I – Easy. Small riffles. No significant waves or obstacles.
- Class II – Novice. Moderate rapids with regular waves, small drops, clear passages and wide channels. Occasional maneuvering may be required.
- Class III – Intermediate. Moderately difficult rapids with larger irregular waves, often narrow channels. Complex maneuvering to avoid obstacles required.
- Class IV – Advanced. Intense, powerful rapids requiring precise maneuvering in fast, turbulent water. Complex channels with many significant obstacles to be avoided.
- Class V – Expert. Extremely long violent or obstructed rapids, often following each other almost without interruption. Drops may have large, unavoidable waves and holes or steep, congested chutes with difficult routes. Steep gradient.
- Class VI – Unrunnable.
Classifications of river sections may change due to water levels. For information to help you choose a trip, or for any questions you might have please, call 1-720-807-3250 and our office personnel will be happy to assist you in putting together a river experience. Or, send us a message .
Cold weather gear is recommended and may be mandatory for some river adventures. Cold weather gear is not only for your comfort but also for your safety. Because of cold water and rocky river bottoms, wetsuits, footwear, and splash tops make a big difference. If you don’t have your own equipment, don’t worry; cold weather gear is available at all basecamp locations for a small rental fee.
We do not charge taxes on our services because we are not required to by law. We are, however, required to pay numerous fees to many local, regional and state organizations, including but not limited to the City of Idaho Springs, Clear Creek County, Division of Oil and Public Safety (OPS), Colorado Parks and Wildlife, Colorado Department of Revenue and our property owner.
In addition to those fees, our booking software and credit card fees charge a large percentage of each transaction. When weather cancels events, we eat this cost. If weather is not the cancellation reason, however, we must charge the customer to recoup that cost.
In addition, we are a voluntary member of numerous local, state and national organizations that offer regulatory and strategic support to us as an outfitter. These membership costs are not included in our fees but they do provide additional layers of safety and professionalism that not all outfitters adhere to but we are committed to following. These include: Colorado River Outfitter’s Association (CROA), America Outdoors (AO), Association for Challenge Course Technology (ACCT) and more.

COLORADO RIVER RAFTING WITH THE HUALAPAI RIVER RUNNERS
Your guide for a one-day whitewater rafting journey.
For some, the Colorado River is a critical water supply; for others a place for adrenaline-inducing adventure. For the Hualapai Tribe of Northern Arizona, it’s both of these and so much more. Before embarking on a whitewater rafting trip, take a deeper dive into the mystery and majesty of one of the longest rivers in the United States.
THE COLORADO RIVER: A TRANSCENDENT TRIBUTARY
The Colorado River is the sixth-longest river in the nation at 1,450 miles, flowing through seven states, two nations and 11 national parks and monuments. The waters carved about 277 river miles through the Grand Canyon, with 110 miles running through the Hualapai Indian Reservation and Grand Canyon West.
THE HA’YIĐAĐA
The Colorado River is revered as a life-giving source, known by the Hualapai as “Ha’yiđađa,” the backbone or spine of the river. The river and the riparian ecosystems through the canyon flow through the hearts of the Hualapai people, who believe they were created from the sediment and clay of the river.
Indigenous peoples of all tribes recognize the sacredness of water and its interconnection among all living beings. The Hualapai see the river as a living, breathing entity with its rapids as a force to be respected, revered and protected.
“Without water, life wouldn’t be sustainable,” said Hualapai River Runners Operations Manager Dugan Steele. “We grew up respecting water; it’s alive, we are told. So when you look at it, you see the rapids, it’s kind of like a breathing entity.”
When you go on a whitewater rafting trip with the Hualapai River Runners, you’ll be led down the river by a majority of Indigenous river guides. These certified experts share their narratives to educate and inspire visitors to protect and take care of this life-giving and sacred resource.
ONE-DAY COLORADO RIVER TOUR
With the only direct road leading to the Grand Canyon, the Hualapai River Runners offer the only one-day whitewater rafting experience on the Colorado River. This one-day guided rafting tour takes you about 55 miles through the deepest part of the Grand Canyon, estimated at 3,500 to 4,000 feet. As you make your way, the elevations change from where you start at the top of the canyon to the bank boarding your boat to where you disembark at the end of the trip. This causes the rock formations and environment to change dramatically, offering you the chance to experience more of the environment.
GORGEOUS RIVER GORGES
Your one-day rafting trip is an adventure through different ecosystems that begins in the highlands at Peach Springs before you make your way down to the river on a one-hour bus ride. From here, you go to Diamond Creek before ending at Pierce Ferry. This journey takes you through different elevations that change the scenery around you. Keep your eyes peeled to see different types of geology and rock formations as well as vegetation. Wildlife is abundant. You could see bighorn sheep and reptiles like chuckwallas and lizards, maybe even a rattlesnake. Less common but equally exciting sightings include deer, eagles and bobcats.
SIGHTSEEING AND HISTORY LESSONS
Your river guide is not only certified to safely traverse the Colorado River but is also an expert at sharing points of interest along your 55-mile rafting trip. In the first half of the journey, you’ll conquer rapids, whereas the second half is rapid-free, allowing for sightseeing. Steele says your Hualapai river guide will point out the storage facilities, campsite and ledges made into the rock left by men attempting to build the Bridge Canyon Dam in the 1940s, a project that stalled in 1968 after years of public opposition. As the boat glides past Separation Canyon, you’ll learn the story of the Powell Expedition and the three men who attempted to hike out in 1869. During monsoons, waterfalls are sure to surprise and delight, plus views of the famous Skywalk and Guano Point.
Steele says you’ll also learn more about the Hualapai Tribe, from the shelters and homes the Hualapai built along the walls of the Grand Canyon to the tribe’s history, including the 1874 La Paz and how the Canyon served as a refuge to the significance of the Colorado River for the Hualapai and the Yuman language family tribes. Plus, you’ll hear the oral histories of the Hualapai creation story stemming from the canyon. And every trip includes a moderate hike and short climb to Travertine Cavern Falls with lunch along a sandy beach.
THE HUALAPAI RIVER RUNNERS
Since 1988, the Hualapai River Runners have offered the only one-day rafting trip on the Colorado River and two-day paddle trips. The company employs Indigenous people of their tribe and neighboring nations, including Chemehuevi, Havasupai, Hopi, Navajo, Mohave, Paiute, Yavapai-Prescott Yavapai-Apache, Colorado River Indian Tribes and Zuni.
“Many river guides start after high school, working up to become certified guides. They take pride in the opportunity to give back to their communities while educating visitors about their culture and lifestyles,” said Steele. “The jobs created by the attractions help Hualapai and other Indigenous people support themselves.”
In contrast, your ticket purchase supports the Hualapai Tribe. This sovereign nation does not receive federal funding, with proceeds from your ticket helping sustain the Indigenous peoples that call the Hualapai Indian Reservation home.
After this bucket list adventure, you’ll leave knowing more about these vibrant people, their past and present, and leave with a better understanding of their sacrifices, struggles and successes. And most importantly, you’ll become an environmental steward, conserving natural resources and traveling sustainably.

Grand Canyon Whitewater Rafting Trips
Whitewater rafting trips in the upper or lower grand canyon.
The ultimate bucket list river trip, Grand Canyon whitewater rafting trips are a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. The view from the rim is spectacular, but the view from a raft is even better. The river and the canyon are a world unto themselves. Discover fascinating geology and biodiversity that is only accessible via the river or rugged footpaths.
The best river trip in northern Arizona, Grand Canyon puts you in touch with the power of the Colorado River. Run infamous rapids such as Hermit, Granite, Crystal, and Lava Falls. Hike through impossibly beautiful side canyons and swim in crystalline pools. Let the bird song and glowing canyon walls fill your days.
Holiday can arrange five- to nine-day rafting trips through either the lower or upper sections of Grand Canyon. These trips involve a nine-mile hike into or out of the canyon from the South Rim to the Colorado River; we recommend that only those in good physical condition consider these trips. Reservations should be made well in advance; demand for this world-class adventure is high. Grand Canyon whitewater rafting trips are run by outside affiliates who are authorized Grand Canyon concessionaires.
Looking for a Colorado River Rafting trip that is easier on your pocketbook and your busy schedule? Check out any of Holiday’s alternative “Grand” canyon river rafting trips! The Colorado River and its tributaries extend far beyond Grand Canyon, north into Utah and Colorado where they run through different ancient canyons. Big rapids, cultural sites, dramatic geology, beach campsites, hiking options, and canyon scenery, these alternative canyons have it all for a fraction of the cost and time.
5–6 Day Upper Grand Canyon
The Upper Grand Canyon is an amazing place with legendary landmarks such as Vasey’s Paradise, the Little Colorado River, and Redwall Cavern. Although the most famous whitewater is found in the lower canyon, the upper still holds some major rapids such as Nevills and Hance. Starting at Lees Ferry, the canyon opens to us as we begin the float into its vast interior. It all starts as a narrow, sheer-sided chasm, winding through the uplifted Kaibab Plateau. The first 61 miles of Marble Canyon are the most photographed, perhaps the most scenic portion of the Grand Canyon. The rim moves out of view as the canyon broadens to its full, 13-mile width. Then we enter the foreboding inner gorge with its exquisite, polished granite. This gem of the Colorado Plateau is indeed one of the most scenic places on earth!
8–9 Day Lower Grand Canyon
The Lower section of the Grand Canyon is characterized by its granite gorges and punctuated by massive whitewater. Legendary rapids reside in this lower portion of the canyon, beginning with Horn Creek and continuing through Hermit, Crystal, and Lava Falls. Hold on to your hats: not only will this be a wild (and safe!) ride but you'll want those shady hats for the many epic side canyon hikes peppered throughout the lower gorge. The lower canyon has every ingredient to make a memorable trip. All that's missing is you!

CHEYENNE, Wyo. (AP) — Three members of the University of Wyoming swimming and diving team were killed and two others injured when their sport utility vehicle veered and rolled over alongside a rural highway, bringing to at least 15 the school’s students killed in recent years on the perilous road.
The latest crash happened Thursday afternoon on U.S. 287 about 10 miles (16 kilometers) south of the Wyoming-Colorado line between Laramie, Wyoming, and Fort Collins, Colorado.
The crash happened when the Toyota RAV4 SUV with five people inside swerved and went off the pavement, and the vehicle rolled over multiple times.
Two people were ejected. The crash killed Charlie Clark, 19, a sophomore psychology major from Las Vegas; Luke Slabber, 21, a junior studying construction management from Cape Town, South Africa; and Carson Muir, 18, a freshman on the women’s swimming and diving team and an animal and veterinary sciences major from Birmingham, Alabama, according to the university.

AP correspondent Haya Panjwani reports on a fatal crash including athletes from the University of Wyoming.
The two injured team members, including the driver, were released from the hospital Friday, according to a Colorado State Patrol statement that did not identify the survivors.
The driver may have been avoiding a vehicle ahead that had slowed, possibly to make a turn, according to the state patrol statement.
The accident was still being investigated. Possible causes including driving too fast, impairment and distractions were not being ruled out, the statement says.
Two people were ejected from the vehicle but the statement didn’t say who they were or whether they were wearing seat belts. The SUV was headed south and not on an official team trip, according to the patrol.
“We are heartsick at the news of this terrible tragedy for our university, our state, our student-athlete community and, most importantly, the families and friends of these young people,” University of Wyoming President Ed Seidel said in the statement.
The crash happened as others on the team competed at the Mountain West Swimming & Diving Championships in Houston. Swimmers from Colorado State University in Fort Collins honored their Wyoming rivals at the meet with the Wyoming logo and “WYO” with a heart drawn on their skin.
The weather was fair and conditions clear at the time on the often busy, two- and three-lane highway that winds through the scenic Rocky Mountain foothills. Typical hazards include blind curves, wildlife, passing vehicles and traffic entering and exiting at intersections.
University of Wyoming students often travel the road for shopping, socializing and entertainment in Fort Collins and Denver.
In 2001, a head-on crash with a drunken driver on the same highway killed eight members of the University of Wyoming cross-country team.
In that crash days after the Sept. 11 terrorist attacks, Clint Haskins, a University of Wyoming student, swerved into the lane in front of the athletes’ northbound SUV.
Haskins was the only survivor of the crash 15 miles (24 kilometers) south of Laramie and pleaded guilty to aggravated vehicular homicide. He was paroled after 9 1/2 years in prison.
The crash shocked the state and helped lead to safety improvements on the highway in Wyoming.
In 2010, a pickup truck drifted off the highway in Colorado and rolled over, killing a 19-year-old University of Wyoming football player and injuring three teammates.
In 2021, three University of Wyoming students were killed when their car slid on icy pavement and was struck by an oncoming vehicle near the scene of Thursday’s wreck.
Portions of the road in Colorado have above-average crash rates, making the highway a good candidate for more safety improvements, according to a summary of a 2023 Colorado Department of Transportation report. The report has not yet been made public.
The same 30-mile (48-kilometer) section from north of Fort Collins to the Wyoming line where the crash occurred Thursday has had 570 crashes, including 15 fatal wrecks, in the past five years, according to the summary.
