Here Come the Sons

Here Come the Sons

Sometimes the people who should know the most about the benefits of protecting history know the least. James McCartney, Paul McCartney’s thirty-four-year-old son, has told the BBC that he and the other Beatle sons have considered creating a band called “The Beatles—The Next Generation.” Set aside the possibility that this is a particularly sadomasochistic April Fools’ joke, and you have, instead, a puzzling train of thought that cannot possibly stay on the tracks.

It’s not just that the Beatles’ offspring—McCartney, who is beginning to embark on a solo career; George’s son Dhani, who has recorded with a band called thenewno2 and, more recently, helped to develop a guitar app based on his father’s work; John’s son Sean, who has been a moderately successful solo artist and is now part of a duet act, The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger, with his model girlfriend Charlotte Kemp Muhl; and Ringo’s son Zak, who has drummed with the Who and others—are different kinds of musicians than their fathers. And it’s not just that the chemistry that made the Beatles what they were, as individuals and as a collective, existed in a certain time and place, both defining and being defined by the massive social changes that surrounded it. It’s also that the very men who should be protecting that legacy are talking, even in passing, about burlesquing it. Lorne Michaels should offer them a thousand dollars each to abandon the idea.

McCartney’s idea, as whimsical as anything his father ever dreamed up, suggests another topic: why music genes don’t seem to be inherited in the same way as, say, intelligence, or appearance. In 2005, Rolling Stone published a cover story called “The Children Of Rock” (“They Grew Up In the Shadow of Legends—and Lived To Tell the Tale”). Sean Lennon was pictured on the front cover , along with Alexandra Richards (daughter of Keith), Nona Gaye (daughter of Marvin), Ben Taylor (son of James and Carly), and James Garfunkel (clone/son of Art). At the time, most of them were considering music careers: a decade later, few are recording regularly, having decamped instead for careers in modelling (Richards), acting (Gaye), and business (Garfunkel).

The second generation shouldn’t be maligned for their choices, of course. As the article details, children of famous rock stars have it easy in some ways (money, mainly), but hard in others (tumultuous home lives, a close-up look at the displeasures of fame, and, most dominantly, the pressure of their parents’ achievement). And, while there are plenty of second-generation talents (Teddy Thompson, Rufus Wainwright, Joachim Cooder, Justin Townes Earle), the kids that succeed most commonly do so by marking off the difference between their career and their parents’ careers. (It’s a dynamic that allows the parents, then, to be respectful and supportive—at a recent show at City Winery, Richard Thompson lovingly invited Teddy onstage to sing a few songs with him, and the Wainwrights have collaborated together often.)

Ironically, although talent and drive may not be inherited, vocal quality often is. Taylor’s vocals can sound eerily like his father’s. (As do, say, Harper Simon’s, who is Paul’s son.) The most famous example of this, of course, is the Lennon example—not Sean, but Julian, John’s older son, who briefly became a star in the eighties with hits like “Too Late For Goodbyes” and “Valotte.” John Lennon’s assassination was still a recent memory, and Julian served, at the time, as a kind of psychic replacement. His career tapered off quickly after that, though he released an album last year titled “Everything Changes.” It hadn’t, and the album didn’t make much of an impression.

So here’s to hoping that the Beatles—The Next Generation never happens, for the sake of the Beatles, the Beatles—The Next Generation, and for the rest of us. Jakob Dylan, who is perhaps the most successful second-generation rock star, used to cover The Who’s “Won’t Get Fooled Again” onstage when his band the Wallflowers were a going concern. Let’s all take that lesson to heart.

Whether you want to take London Beatles tours on a self-guided basis or would rather join a group tour, this guide is for you! Included is a rundown of seven Beatles-related London locations to visit – as well as seven of the best Fab Four London tours.

Will it be the Beatles store, the London Palladium, Paul McCartney’s home, Savile Row or the iconic Abbey Road you head for first? Read on to discover The Beatles in London – and how best to follow in their footsteps.

The Beatles in London.

The Beatles in London – Tour Guide Summary

Located on Baker Street, the Beatles shop in London is a treasure trove for fans of the Liverpudlian quartet’s music.

The Beatles London store stocks what is said to be the biggest range of Beatles merchandise you’ll find anywhere on the planet, and is just a minute’s walk from Baker Street tube station.

The products on sale include keyrings, t-shirts, mugs, homeware, bags, posters, collectable items, musical accessories like guitar straps and even autographs.

Contrary to popular belief there isn’t actually a London Beatles museum, but you can visit a couple of museums displaying artefacts relating to the Fab Four.

Artistic impressions of John, Paul, George and Ringo can be found at the National Portrait Gallery, while the British Library (part of the British Museum) has some original lyrics on show plus handwritten birthday cards and some photos.

Another option is to visit Madame Tussaud’s, where you can of course see their waxworks. Otherwise, you’d need to head to the Beatles Museum in Liverpool known as The Beatles Story .

Abbey Road was catapulted to worldwide fame after starring on the cover of the album of the same name. The road and the recording studios can be found in north west London, near St John’s Wood tube station. It’s an incredibly popular place to visit among Beatles fans from across the globe.

The location is included on many tours of Beatles sites in London, including six of the seven listed below. Or you can take the tube to St John’s Wood to find it.

At the tube station exit (there is only one here) continue westwards along Grove End Road. About half a kilometre along is the turn into Abbey Road, and you should easily spot both the studios and the crossing.

Abbey Road crossing.

The term ‘Beatlemania’ was apparently coined after the band performed at the venue. This took place in October 1963. A newspaper then used the term within their gig write-up, and it caught on. The building on Argyll Street in Soho is also visually stunning, so it’s well worth a visit if you’re a fan and near the area.

The famous Beatles rooftop gig took place on Savile Row, where Apple Corp has their headquarters. It was the last time they’d play live together, and was called to a halt due to police intervention. The gig was previously unannounced. At the end, John Lennon thanked the crowd and said he hoped the band had auditioned well.

Savile Row sign in London.

Marylebone Station was used at the start of A Hard Day’s Night , a Beatles feature film, so is a must for serious fans of the band or the movie. Interestingly George Harrison falling and tearing his suit was accidental, yet was included in the final cut.

Marylebone train station in London.

In 1963, Paul McCartney bought number 7 Cavendish Avenue, close to the Abbey Road studios. Apparently he still owns the house, and continues to use it as a London base to this day. It’s in the St John’s Wood area, near Lord’s cricket ground.

The Beatles in London – FAQs

Areas frequented by the Fab Four during the 1960s include Mayfair, Soho, St John’s Wood and Kensington. The band once shared a home in Mayfair – Flat L at 57 Green Street. The flatshare was fairly short-lived as the growing family of John, Cynthia and Julian Lennon soon needed more space.

A blue plaque unveiled by Yoko Ono marks the spot where John Lennon lived with her in 1968. The address is 34 Montagu Square, Marylebone. Ringo Starr was the one who took on the lease, renting it out to John and Yoko for several months. Paul McCartney also composed there, as did Jimi Hendrix who also lived there for a while.

Abbey Road is in the St John’s Wood area of north west London, and the Beatles famously used the recording studios there. The zebra crossing the members of the band are walking across on the cover of the album is probably the most visited crossing in the world. The nearest tube station is St John’s Wood.

John and Yoko met in late 1966 at a London art gallery. Yoko was about to exhibit there and was busy preparing her pieces for display. The connection was said to be instantaneous, and although the partnership attracted controversy they were wed in March 1969.

The Beatles played an unannounced concert from a rooftop on Savile Row, London in 1969. This was the headquarters of Apple, the band’s record label. They were over 40 minutes in before they were asked by the police to turn down the sound. It turned out to be their last live gig as a foursome.

John Lennon was shot in New York, not London. The killing took place in 1980 in Manhattan, when Mark Chapman shot him four times. Apparently, the gunman was obsessed with Lennon.

From the homes of Lennon or McCartney to the site of The Beatles’ last live gig ever or shopping till you drop at the memorabilia store, how will you explore the part the Fab Four played in city life during the swinging sixties?

Whether you opt for an organised tour or go your own way, there’s no denying the influence this trailblazing band from Liverpool had on the pop music scene.

Cirque official on closing of ‘The Beatles Love’: ‘It wasn’t our decision’

The decision ends a production that opened in June 2006, with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison — the widow of George Harrison — in attendance.

Paul McCartney is shown with aerialist Sasha Harrington of "Love" at the Mirage on Saturday, Se ...

The Hard Rock Las Vegas will rock without the Beatles.

“The Beatles Love” by Cirque du Soleil is closing at The Mirage/Hard Rock Las Vegas on July 7. Producers announced the decision Tuesday morning.

Thus ends the only live production anywhere in the world licensed by Apple Corp, the Beatles’ parent company.

Cirque du Soleil CEO Stéphane Lefebvre said Mirage/Hard Rock Las Vegas officials pulled the plug on the show.

“This wasn’t our decision,” Lefebvre said in a virtual interview Tuesday afternoon, after being asked why the show is closing. “As you you know, Hard Rock needs to take control of the entire venue and do some major renovations. So they need to get the show closed by July 7.”

Lefebvre, based in Montreal and Cirque’s top-ranking official said he found out “late last week” the show would be shut down. He also confirmed there are no plans to tour “Love,” a show that would seem to have strong demand internationally.

“If it has a life beyond this venue, it will need to change the format a little bit. The theater is so unique, it’s a 360-degree stage and very deep,” Lefebvre said “If we want to move it elsewhere, if we look at somewhere in Europe, we need to make some significant changes.”

A total of 230 members of the “Love” cast and crew are to lose their jobs as the result of the shutdown.

‘Love’ problems

The future of “Love” had been in question as The Mirage turns over to Hard Rock Las Vegas. The show was reportedly running between 40- and 60-percent capacity in its 2,013-seat theater. That is the lowest box-office performance of Cirque’s six productions on the Strip.

The loss of “Love” creates a void among Cirque shows in Las Vegas. The company still operates “Mystere” at Treasure Island , “O” at Bellagio , ‘Ka” at MGM Grand , “Michael Jackson One” at Mandalay Bay and “Mad Apple” at New York-New York.

Cirque also owns Blue Man Group at Luxor and is a partner in the outgoing “America’s Got Talent Live — Superstars” show at Luxor.

Lefebvre addressed possible new Cirque projects, saying, MGM Resorts International remains the company’s primary Las Vegas partner, though Cirque is in partnership with Phil Ruffin with its longest-running show, “Mystere” at Treasure Island and is closing out its business relationship with Hard Rock.

“MGM is by far is our strongest and most important partner,” Lefebvre said. “I think first and foremost, before we start looking around at other potential partners, we really want to do something with MGM. Absolutely.”

The MGM portfolio now includes Cosmopolitan, where Spiegelworld’s “OPM” closed earlier this year. Lefebvre said investigating that space, among other smaller-scale opportunities “could be interesting for us, clearly.”

The future of “Love” had been in question as The Mirage turns over to Hard Rock Las Vegas. The show was reportedly running between 40- and 60-percent capacity, the lowest box-office performance of Cirque’s six productions on the Strip.

‘A captivating show’

Mirage President Joe Lupo praised the show, which will have run for about a year and a half under his company’s stewardship of the resort.

“Throughout its historic 18-year run at The Mirage Las Vegas, ‘The Beatles Love’ has been a captivating show that has delighted millions of guests as they shared in the wonder of Cirque du Soleil,” Lupo said in a statement. “I want to share my sincere appreciation to MGM and the entertainment team who ensured that the show’s legacy continued during our ownership transition.”

Lupo also thanked the Cirque performers and team members, adding, “The closure marks the continued construction that directly impacts daily offerings, as we continue the process of transforming our property into the Strip’s newest icon.”

When “Love” bows out, Cirque will have closed three shows in a little more than four years. “R.U.N” at Luxor came and went in five months ending in March 2020. “Zumanity” at New York-New York did not return after the pandemic shutdown , closing permanently in November 2020. “Mad Apple” replaced “Zumanity” in the same theater in May 2022.

‘Love’ history

The decision ends a wondrous production that opened in June 2006, with Paul McCartney, Ringo Starr, Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison — the widow of George Harrison — in attendance. McCartney and Harrison scouted “O” at Bellagio together in 2001 to gauge how The Beatles’ music and images could blend with Cirque artistry.

Harrison was a close friend of Cirque co-founder Guy Laliberte, with the idea from the show hatched between the two at the F1 Montreal Grand Prix in 2000. With Harrison leading the initial vision for the show, Laliberte steered the production to creation at the Mirage.

The Love Theatre took over the former Siegfried & Roy Theater at the resort.

According to Cirque figures, a total of 44 nationalities are represented. The show required 11,600 costume pieces, 250 pairs of shoes, and 225 wigs each night. A total of 750,000 lumens in projections, 500 props and scenic pieces were required to put on the show.

Upcoming moves

The closing of “Love” is not the only shift in the entertainment landscape at The Mirage. Current Mirage Theater headliner Shin Lim is also the focus of speculation he will be leaving the resort this summer. Several interested parties are reportedly attempting to lure the headlining magician.

The Mirage Theater’s former Aces of Comedy program, developed under MGM Resorts, ended with the hotel’s sale to Hard Rock. Several familiar headliners (including David Spade, Ron White and Ray Romano) moving to other venues on the Strip.

The Center Stage series is holding down the comedy programming in the short term, alternating showtimes with Lim. His post-Mirage plans should be announced soon.

Meantime, “Love” will fade out after playing to more than 11.5 million ticket-holders in its 18-year run. Every performance closes with “All You Need Is Love.” That is how we will remember this show.

Among her countless triumphs, 2023 saw Elliott named as the first female hip-hop artist to be inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, rightly declaring her “ a true path breaker in a male-dominated genre. ”

Elliott’s most recent work, 2019’s acclaimed EP, ICONOLOGY , drew instant applause upon its surprise release, with USA Today declaring it “ a master class at the school of Missy Misdemeanor Elliott. ” That same year saw the iconic star making history as the first female hip-hop artist ever to receive the MTV Video Music Awards’ prestigious Michael Jackson Video Vanguard Award. 2019 also saw her break new ground as the first female hip-hop artist and third-ever rapper to be inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame. In addition, Elliott became the first female rapper to receive an honorary Doctor of Music degree from Berklee College of Music, celebrating her lasting contributions to music and popular culture. Further accolades followed in 2021, with Elliott named among the twelve inaugural inductees for the new Atlanta landmark, The Black Music & Entertainment Walk of Fame, and later honored with her own star on the world famous Hollywood Walk of Fame. In 2022, Elliott’s hometown of Portsmouth, VA celebrated its favorite daughter by presenting her with the Key to the City and renaming a portion of McLean Street to “Missy Elliott Boulevard” and declaring October 17 as Missy Elliott Day. What’s more, Virginia’s Norfolk State University awarded Elliott with the Presidential Commencement Medallion and an honorary degree at their fall 2022 commencement ceremony, acknowledging her “ outstanding professional achievements and extraordinary contributions to public service. ”

In addition to her historic induction into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame in 2023, the Recording Academy’s Black Music Collective presented Elliott with its Recording Academy Global Impact Award, honoring her personal and professional achievements in the music industry. The 2023 GRAMMY® Awards saw Elliott among the superstars celebrating the 50 th anniversary of hip-hop, joining such icons as LL Cool J, Ice-T, Method Man, Busta Rhymes, and Salt-N-Pepa for a landmark performance honoring the genre’s diverse history. Additional 2023 tributes include the Black Music Honors’ “Music Innovator Icon” award as well as a special ESSENCE cover story celebrating her headline performance at the 2023 ESSENCE Festival of Culture in New Orleans. Indeed, Missy Elliott deserves all the flowers and then some. Now, with her OUT OF THIS WORLD — The Missy Elliott Experience hitting arenas across North America with Ciara, Busta Rhymes and special guest Timbaland – and new music always on the horizon – Missy Elliott continues to stand tall over pop culture as a true creative architect and revolutionary artist, her prophetic sound and vision as groundbreaking and influential as ever before.

Peter Brown, One of the Beatles’ Closest Confidants, Tells All (Again)

At 87, the dapper insider is releasing a new book of interviews conducted in 1980 and 1981 with the band and people nearest to it.

A man in a tan suit and purple button up shirt, sits in a chair with his right hand on his face. In the background, yellow floral wallpaper is on the wall.

By Ben Sisario

Peter Brown stood in his spacious Central Park West apartment, pointing first at the dining table and then through the window to the park outside, with Strawberry Fields just to the right.

“John sat at that table looking through here,” Brown said, “and he couldn’t take his eyes off the park.”

That’s John as in Lennon. And the story of the former Beatle coveting this living-room view in 1971 — and how Lennon and his wife, Yoko Ono, eventually got their own place one block down, at the Dakota — is just one of Brown’s countless nuggets of Fab Four lore. In the 1960s he was an assistant to Brian Epstein, the Beatles’ manager, and then an officer at Apple Corps, the band’s company. A key figure in the Beatles’ secretive inner circle, Brown kept a red telephone on his desk whose number was known only to the four members.

And it was Brown who, in 1969, informed Lennon that he and Ono could quickly and quietly wed in a small British territory on the edge of the Mediterranean, a piece of advice immortalized in “The Ballad of John and Yoko”: “Peter Brown called to say, ‘You can make it OK/You can get married in Gibraltar, near Spain.’”

Next week, Brown and the writer Steven Gaines are releasing a book, “All You Need Is Love: The Beatles in Their Own Words,” made up of interviews they conducted in 1980 and 1981 with the band and people close to it, including business representatives, lawyers, wives and ex-wives — the raw material that Brown and Gaines used for their earlier narrative biography of the band, “The Love You Make: An Insider’s Story of the Beatles,” published in 1983.

Now 87, Brown is a polarizing figure in Beatles history. He was a witness to some of the band’s most important moments and was a trusted keeper of its secrets. “The only people left are Paul and Ringo and me,” he said.

On a tour of Brown’s apartment, the spoils of his access were everywhere. In his bedroom, Brown showed off an original image of the cover of “Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band,” with background figures (like Gandhi ) that didn’t make the final cut. In the dining room are binders and boxes stuffed with Beatle-related snapshots and correspondence.

But the publication of “The Love You Make” four decades ago also made him a kind of villain. According to Brown, the band agreed to interviews to set the record straight about its history. Yet the book — primarily written by Gaines, a journalist and biographer known for detailed, warts-and-all portraits — was seen as tawdry and sensational, preoccupied with sex lives and internecine conflicts, with music a secondary subject. Excerpts ran in National Enquirer.

To the band and many of those around them, it was seen as a betrayal. Paul McCartney accused Brown of misleading him by pitching it as a more general book about music in the 1960s. Linda McCartney said she and Paul burned it.

“That book was a shame,” Mark Lewisohn , the pre-eminent Beatles scholar, said in a recent interview.

“It’s almost like there are two different Peter Browns,” Lewisohn added. “There’s the Peter Brown I know, who is this upright, respectable, very successful businessman. And then the one who attached his name to this Steven Gaines book.”

Brown has heard all the criticism before, and waves it off. Sitting in a chair he inherited from Epstein — and dapper as always in a purple button-down shirt and charcoal slacks — Brown said the book stands as an accurate portrayal, and that the Beatles knew full well what they were getting into.

“There was never any effort on my part to make it negative,” Brown said in his unflappably gentle voice, as classical music wafted quietly through his home. “And nobody’s ever questioned that it was true.”

He also rejected McCartney’s version of events. “Paul imagines things,” Brown said. “Everything he does, he has his own way of remembering, and he’s crazy about it.”

Gaines, for his part, attributes the notoriety of the original book to his and Brown’s refusal to produce a sanitized hagiography, and their decision instead to publish controversial private details. Among those was a rumor that Lennon once had a sexual encounter with Epstein, which Brown and Gaines reported as fact, based on their research.

“Nobody had put something like that in a book,” Gaines said. That episode, on a trip to Spain in 1963, has been debated for years by Beatles commentators. Lennon denied having sex with Epstein, saying in an interview with Playboy: “It was almost a love affair, but not quite. It was never consummated.”

Brown and Gaines’s new book, “All You Need Is Love,” goes even deeper into Beatle lore than their first. It offers an extended transcript of Ono denying, not too persuasively, that she introduced Lennon to heroin, and includes various firsthand accounts of the threats and chaos the band faced on tour in Manila in 1966. Ron Kass, who led the Beatles’ Apple label, describes the impossibility of running a business with Lennon and McCartney as the bosses. One, he says, wanted the label design to be green, the other white; Kass decided to make each side a different color.

There are also startling comments from McCartney and George Harrison about Lennon, revealing the tension and raw feelings that were still present a decade after the band broke up, in interviews recorded just weeks before Lennon was killed in December 1980. Harrison calls his former bandmate “a piece of [expletive]” and wonders why he had “become so nasty.”

McCartney describes Lennon and Ono as “very suspicious people,” and portrays his relationship with them as a kind of power struggle.

“The way to get their friendship is to do everything the way they require it. To do anything else is how to not get their friendship,” McCartney says in the book. “I know that if I absolutely lie down on the ground and just do everything like they say and laugh at all their jokes and don’t expect my jokes to ever get laughed at,” he adds, “if I’m willing to do all that, then we can be friends.”

Lennon never got a chance to respond, Brown said. “I spoke to John, and said, ‘Listen, I’m coming to New York to do some of the recordings,’” he recalled. “And he said, ‘Yes, fine. Looking forward to it.’ And that was the week before he was murdered.” Ono’s interview was done a few months later, in the spring of 1981.

As with many Beatles histories, there are plenty of contradictions, opposing perspectives and selective memories. Interviews with the manager Allen Klein and the lawyer John L. Eastman offer an icy tit-for-tat on the battle for business control during the band’s last days. And Alexis Mardas, a.k.a. Magic Alex, the supposed inventor who others in the book call a con man, gives his account — with skeptical footnotes added by Brown and Gaines — of the Beatles’ retreat in India in 1968.

When asked about finding the truth amid contrasting accounts in an oral history, Brown turned philosophical. “It depends on where you’re sitting,” he said.

There are even conflicting stories about the genesis of Brown and Gaines’s new book. According to Brown, it began when a New York Times reporter — me — asked him for comment three years ago about “The Beatles: Get Back,” Peter Jackson’s exhaustive look at the band’s stormy recording sessions in early 1969. Brown realized then, he said, that he was one of the last remaining witnesses to important history.

But Gaines said that the origins of the project go back years before, to when he wondered what to do with the original interview tapes, which were languishing in his safe deposit box on Long Island. Gaines said he considered donating or selling them, but Brown demurred. They settled on a book of edited transcriptions, though they still squabble over details like ownership of the tapes. “It’s ‘Rashomon’ with Peter,” Gaines said.

After Brown quit his work with the Beatles on Dec. 31, 1970 — the day that McCartney filed a lawsuit to dissolve the band’s partnership — he came to the United States and worked with Robert Stigwood , the Australian-born entertainment mogul who had huge hits in the 1970s with the Bee Gees and the films “Saturday Night Fever” and “Grease.” Then Brown founded a public relations firm, BLJ Worldwide, which in 2011 came under scrutiny for its work representing the families of Muammar el-Qaddafi in Libya and of Bashar al-Assad in Syria. Brown declined to speak about that episode on the record.

But he remains most proud of his association with the Beatles, and said he viewed “All You Need Is Love” as a final gesture defining his legacy with the band.

“This is the end of it,” he said. “Hopefully we’re closing the door now.”

Yoko Ono Told John Lennon How to Take Heroin, New Book Claims: I Told Him 'It Was Just a Nice Feeling'

In an excerpt from The Beatles oral history book 'All You Need Is Love,' Ono reportedly recounts how Lennon "wouldn’t take anything unless he wanted to do it"

Yoko Ono reportedly told John Lennon how to take heroin, according to an excerpt from a new oral history book on The Beatles .

The Sunday Times shared several new excerpts from All You Need Is Love — a book featuring interviews from the early 1980s with Paul McCartney , George Harrison and Ringo Starr , as well as Ono and other loved ones in the band's world.

In one interview from the book, Ono, now 91, reportedly said she advised Lennon on how to take heroin, and denied that she "put John on H," which she claimed his bandmate Harrison had accused her of. Ono also said that Lennon "wouldn’t take anything unless he wanted to do it."

Per the Times excerpt, Ono reportedly said she first "had a sniff of" heroin in Paris and that she experienced "a beautiful feeling" as she did not get sick from it. "It was just a nice feeling," she said in the book, according to the outlet. "So I told John that."

Ono also reportedly said that Lennon would ask her about her experience using the drug, the Times reported. Ultimately, Ono thought he "wanted to take it, that’s why he was asking," per the excerpt. She also said that they "never injected" the drug.

A rep for Ono did not immediately respond to PEOPLE's request for comment.

In 1970, Lennon, who was killed in 1980, previously detailed his first experience with heroin, telling Rolling Stone that it was "not too much fun" and that he "never injected anything."

"We sniffed a little when we were in real pain," he said. "We got such a hard time from everyone, and I’ve had so much thrown at me, and at Yoko, especially at Yoko. Like Peter Brown in our office – and you can put this in – after we come in after six months he comes down and shakes my hand and doesn’t even say hello to her. That’s going on all the time."

"And we get into so much pain that we have to do something about it. And that’s what happened to us," Lennon added. "We took 'H' because of what the Beatles and others were doing to us. But we got out of it."

All You Need is Love comes from former members of the Beatles inner circle, Peter Brown and author Steven Gaines, who first interviewed group members for 1983's  The Love You Make . The initial book was not well-received by the band, The Times notes, with Gains sharing that Paul and Linda McCartney "tore the book apart and burned it in the fireplace, page by page."

Now using those same interview transcripts, the new oral history details tensions between those within The Beatles inner circle, the ending of the band and more.

In one excerpt, Starr, now 83, discussed how he knew "it was time" for The Beatles to break up, and in another, McCartney, now 81, reportedly compared the group to a "football team," stating, "You don’t like to see a chick in the middle of the team."

Jeff Hochberg/Getty Images

McCartney previously reflected on the "period of change" in the Beatles' history when Lennon would bring Ono to studio sessions during his  McCartney: A Life in Lyrics  series on iHeartPodcasts. McCartney said at the time that "anything that disturbs us, is disturbing" while recording.

"We would allow this and not make a fuss," he said. "And yet at the same time, I don't think any of us particularly liked it. It was an interference in the workplace. We had a way we worked. The four of us worked with  George Martin . And that was basically it. And we'd always done it like that. So not being very confrontational, I think we just bottled it up and just got on with it."

All You Need Is Love , which is being touted as a "groundbreaking oral history of the one of the most enduring musical acts of all time," will be out on April 9 via Macmillan .

Clarence "Frogman" Henry Dies: ‘Ain't Got No Home' Singer Was 87

Clarence "Frogman" Henry, the New Orleans R&B singer whose 1956 hit “Ain’t Got No Home” showcased a vocal range that could soar to falsetto and plummet to the croak that provided his nickname, died Sunday. He was 87.

His death was announced by the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Foundation on social media. No cause of death was disclosed, but Henry reportedly had been in declining health and recently underwent surgery.

The Heritage Foundation said the “beloved icon of New Orleans music” was surrounded by friends and family at his passing Sunday night.

“Frogman’s absence at the upcoming 2024 New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival will be deeply felt, as he was scheduled to grace the stage on local's Thursday with the New Orleans Classic Recording Revue,” the Foundation said. “Rest in peace, Frogman.”

The very catchy song (“I sing like a girl and I sing like a frog,” went one verse) that rocketed Henry to nationwide fame would eventually secure its place among the era’s novelty classics like “Love Potion No. 9” by the Clovers and “Alley Oop” by The Hollywood Argyles. The song would be used in various films and TV shows, notably Barry Levinson’s Diner (1982) and Martin Scorsese’s Casino (1995). A version recorded by The Band was used for a notable scene in Joel Schumacher’s The Lost Boys (1987), with Corey Haim singing along while taking a bubble bath.

Born in New Orleans on March 19, 1937, Henry began playing piano as a child, picking up trombone and playing both instruments in his high school band. He played with local groups during and after high school, and was overheard singing in the jokey croak style by a Chess Records exec who encouraged Henry to record the song. Catching the attention of New Orleans DJ Poppa Stoppa, who christened Henry “Frogman,” the song rose to number 3 on the national R&B chart and number 20 on the US pop chart.

Henry had a big follow-up hit in 1961 with “(I Don’t Know Why) But I Do” and, to a lesser extent, “You Always Hurt the One You Love,” both in 1961. He was chosen by The Beatles as an opening act for the band’s 1964 North American tour.

While national fame was fleeting, Henry would maintain decades of popularity in New Orleans and among fans of R&B and Cajun-style music. He retired from the club circuit in 1981 but long continued annual appearances at the Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Times are a-changing: Don't hate on Bob Dylan; enjoy his evolution and vocal maturity

With the return of Bob Dylan to Nashville March 26-27 on his “Rough and Rowdy Ways” tour came the perennial dialogue: Dylan fans lamenting that they recently saw him live, thought that he was terrible, and that he was nothing like the Dylan of Old.

Dylan’s singing voice is perhaps the element of his artistry that has come most under fire. People say he’s lost his voice. The comment is made less as an objective observation and more as an expression of disappointment in not hearing the voice of Dylan that people know and love.

Why do people want the elusive Old Dylan so badly? What is our obsession with demanding repetition from artists we love? In hindsight, would we have preferred The Beatles to make bubble-gum pop their whole career?

My hope is for people to approach Dylan with a more open mind. To see him as someone who, from the beginning, was able to undergo chemical changes with the snap of a finger, to transform from song to song, album to album.

Dylan’s concert at Brooklyn Bowl saw a re-imagining of classic songs, including the rejiggering of his rock anthem “When I Paint My Masterpiece” into a samba, and the once-funky “Gotta Serve Somebody” into a blues shuffle.

I was amazed at how much vitality and spontaneity Bob had when singing these songs; it was as if the reconfigurations allowed him a new relationship to the words and their delivery. It was unfamiliar and beautiful territory.

Paul McCartney Praises Beyoncé’s ‘Killer Version’ of ‘Blackbird’: ‘I Spoke to Her on FaceTime and She Thanked Me’ for ‘Letting Her Do It’

Beyoncé and Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney has weighed in on Beyoncé’s cover of “Blackbird,” nestled near the front of her latest album “Cowboy Carter.”

“I am so happy with @beyonce’s version of my song ‘Blackbird’. I think she does a magnificent version of it and it reinforces the civil rights message that inspired me to write the song in the first place. I think Beyoncé has done a fab version and would urge anyone who has not heard it yet to check it out. You are going to love it!”

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Paul McCartney (@paulmccartney)

McCartney does not mention in his post that she used the master recording of the original guitar-and-foot-tapping backing part he recorded for the Beatles’ White Album in 1968 as the backing track for her new version, as reported earlier this week in Variety . He also receives a co-producing credit on her new recording.

Beyoncé’s lyrically and musically faithful version of the 1968 tune adds additional harmony and/or lead vocals from four Black country singers — Reyna Roberts, Tanner Adell, Brittney Spencer and Tiera Kennedy — along with some fresh bass and orchestration, over McCartney’s original solo acoustic track.

This is not the only cover on Beyoncé’s new album; “ Cowboy Carter ” also includes a new version of Dolly Parton’s “Jolene” (with an updated rewrite of the country star’s lyrics and song structure).

The singer-songwriter solidified the origins of the song’s inspiration in a recent interview with GQ .

“I was sitting around with my acoustic guitar, and I’d heard about the Civil Rights troubles that were happening in the 60s in Alabama, Mississippi, Little Rock in particular,” McCartney said.

“So that was in my mind, and I just thought, ’It would be really good if I could write something that if it ever reached any of the people going through those problems, it might give them a little bit of hope. So I wrote ‘Blackbird.’ In England, a bird is a girl, so I was thinking of a Black girl going through this; now is your time to arise; set yourself free; take these broken wings.”

“One of the nice things about music is that you know that a lot of people listening to you are going to take seriously what you’re saying in the song. I’m very proud of the fact that The Beatles’ output is always really, pretty positive.”
