What to know about Nashville area high school softball season: Storylines, players to watch

tennessee travel softball

The TSSAA spring sports season begins this week and that includes the high school softball season.

As teams begin their quest for a trip to Murfreesboro and Spring Fling in May, here's a look at the softball season in the Nashville area.

Storylines to watch for TSSAA softball season

Green hill sets out to defend class 4a championship.

The defending Class 4A state champs return the core of their lineup this season with three players who were named to The Tennessean's All-Midstate Large Class team last year, led by Emily LeGrand, Cadence Jarrett and all-state phenom Avary Stockwell who returns for her sophomore season. All the pieces are in place for Green Hill to win its second straight title.

What will Tennessee softball commit Kailey Plumlee do for encore?

Gordonsville lost two seniors from last year’s Class 1A state championship team and return one of the state's top pitchers in junior Tennessee commit Kailey Plumlee who had a 28-2 record last year with a 0.95 ERA and struck out 358.

Nolensville faces life after ace Rylan Smith

Nolensville will have to make up for the graduation of pitcher Rylan Smith. Smith, who plays at Western Kentucky. Smith was dominant in 2023 with a 31-6 record, 450 strikeouts and a 1.20 ERA. But the vast majority of that 39-win team returns including junior outfielder Jaycee Bilbrey, a Georgia Southern commit who batted .419 with 33 RBI, and 54 runs, as well as senior first baseman Sydney Dickinson who drove in 52 runs with 15 home runs, 10 doubles and added 40 runs.

Who's on TSSAA softball state championship watch?

Columbia Academy . The Lady Bulldogs’ quest for three straight state titles was dashed when Silverdale Baptist upset them in last year’s Division II-A state title game, 2-1. They're led by Stanford commit Anna Brewer.

Eagleville . Eagleville’s Class 1A state title repeat bid also was halted last year with Gordonsville’s win. Eagleville returns two of the top small class players in the Nashville area with juniors Addi Linton, a Clemson commit, and Arkansas commit Brinli Bain . Both were named All Midstate last season after batting .543 (each). Linton drilled 18 home runs while Bain added 10.

Forrest . A list that doesn’t include the potential playoff success of Forrest is incomplete. The program has four state titles and 10 state runner-up finishes, including last year’s state runner-up finish to Westview. They return All-Midstate standout and Austin Peay signee Maggie Daughrity, who hit .455.

Teams to keep your eye on

Clarksville . The dominant program for the better part of a decade in Montgomery County advanced to the TSSAA softball Class 4A state championship game in 2022 and are led by Tennessee State signee Aree Collins, who scored 31 runs and had 22 RBIs.

Waverly . The Lady Tigers won two games at state last year, advancing to the consolation finals. They return a pair of pitchers in senior Kaylin Reeves, a UT Martin signee, and lefthander Salem O'Dell who struck out 132 in 2023.

Henry County . The Lady Patriots have only three state tournament appearances, but last year’s run ended in the Class 4A consolation semifinals against Daniel Boone with only one senior on the roster. Southeastern Louisiana signee, Celia Lamkin returns as a pitcher and outfielder after batting .452 and striking out 173 batters with a 2.54 ERA.

Jo Byrns. The program has had back-to-back TSSAA softball state tournament runs and reached the losers bracket final in 2023. They return senior shortstop Julia Arms who batted .347 last season and pitcher Callie Yates who struck out 165 batters and batted .483.

Nashville area softball players to watch in 2024

Adriana Callahan, Page, Jr. Callahan is signed to Stanford University. She set seven single-season records at Libertyville High (Illinois) last year as a utility player. She batted .528 with 50 RBI and 15 home runs. She had offers from multiple Power 5 schools, including Texas, Missouri and Tennessee.

Ashleia Coble, Zion Christian, Sr. Coble was a Tennessean All-Midstate performer last year. The South Alabama signee was 9-4 with 148 strikeouts in 73 innings and also hit .417 with seven doubles, eight home runs, 31 RBIs and scored 43 runs.

Madison Davenport, Eagleville, Fr.  Davenport also played as an eighth-grader last year with 111 innings pitched ,108 strikeouts and an 11-2 record. She also batted .418 with a home run.

Anaya Dawson, DCA, Jr. Dawson led the team with a .556 batting average with eight home runs at the centerfield position.

Maddie Floyd, Liberty Creek, Jr. The Western Kentucky commit and catcher had a .386 batting average with three homers and 15 RBIs.

Marina Mason , Brentwood, Jr. The Lady Bruins pitcher was the District 11-4A rookie of the Year in 2022 and pitcher of the year last year. The Northwestern commit had a 17-10 record with a 1.85 ERA in 166 innings, including 262 strikeouts.

Taylor Moreland, Forrest, Fr. Forrest's pitcher threw 122.1 innings as an eighth-grader last year with a 17-4 record, 1.80 ERA and 73 strikeouts.

Saviya Morgan, Columbia, Sr. The Tennessee signee, was named all state last season and District 12-4A offensive player of the year after batting .563 with six triples, a home run, 54 runs and 51 stolen bases.

Carlie Sheets, Clarksville, Sr. The Lady Wildcats infielder was named All District 13-4A, leading CHS last season with a .486 batting average, hits (34) with 21 RBI and three homers.

Bailey Stewart, Gordonsville, Jr: Stewart hit .323 with nine doubles, five triples, a home run and 32 RBIs. She also scored 10 runs.

Addi Swindle, Hendersonville, Sr. Swindle, a shortstop, batted .457 with 42 hits, 10 home runs, 45 RBIs and 14 stolen bases.

Esther White, Waverly, Sr . The Georgia signee was named to The Tennessean's All-Midstate Small Class team last year after batting .538, with seven homers, 16 doubles, nine triples, 43 stolen bases, 60 runs and 31 RBIs. She was named District 11-2A player of the year and all-state.

Noe Wilkerson, Henry County, Sr. The centerfield is a TSU signee and batted .366 with a .763 slugging percentage, seven home runs and 14 stolen bases.

Maliyah Wilkins, Green Hill, Sr: The senior batted .368 with 43 hits, 10 double, 10 homers and 41 RBIs.

Izzy Wilson, Friendship Christian, Jr. The Tusculum commit hit .437 in 2023 with 38 hits, 25 RBIs. She had a 12-3 record with a 1.82 ERA and 88 strikeouts.

The Tennessee softball coaching staff has been named the 2023 ATEC/NFCA Southeast Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

The Knoxville News-Sentinel

Kiki Milloy ties Tennessee softball career home run record with No. 57

Kiki Milloy is one big swing away from becoming the new career home run leader for Tennessee softball.

Milloy tied the program record of 57 with a solo shot in the third inning of a second game of a doubleheader against Baylor on Friday.

The fifth-year centerfielder is now tied with Meghan Gregg who had been the program leader since 2018.

"As she's coming around the bases, I just thought 'Man, it's going to be tough next year not to write No. 9 into that top of the order,' " Lady Vols coach Karen Weekly told UT sports information. "It's been a blessing to coach her. She's one of the great Lady Vols of all-time and not just talking softball."

Gordonsville star junior pitcher Kailey Plumlee committed to Tennessee softball , she tweeted Friday.

"I am so excited to announce that I am going to further my academic and softball career at The University of Tennessee," Plumlee posted on social media Friday. "Thank you to my parents, coaches, and brothers for helping me get to this point. GBO!"

Plumlee led Gordonsville to the 1A state championship and struck out 15 batters in the state title game win over Eagleville. She earned a 28-2 record with a 0.95 ERA and struck out 358 batters while giving up just 53 hits in 155 innings. Plumlee also hit .562 with eight home runs and 49 RBIs and played primarily at first base when not pitching.

She made The Tennessean's 2023 All-Midstate Small Class softball First Team as a pitcher.

Plumlee will be a part of the 2025 recruiting class, which means she'll have two more high school seasons to play before her college career begins in Knoxville.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) — With the regular season over, the Lady Vols prepare to travel to Greenville, SC, with their sights set on the SEC Tournament title.

The league office released the official bracket for the 2024 SEC Women’s Basketball Tournament, with the Lady Vols in the No. 5 seed. The other top four seeds include No. 1 South Carolina, No. 2 LSU and No. 3 Ole Miss.

Tennessee (17-11 overall, 10-6 SEC) finished up the regular season on Sunday with a compelling game on the road against No. 1 South Carolina. South Carolina was favored to win by more than 20 points, but the Lady Vols kept it competitive, eventually cutting the lead to just three points in the second half before losing 68-76.

Head Coach Kellie Harper and the Lady Vols now prepare for competition in the SEC Tournament, where they will wait patiently for their next opponent to be named. Tennessee is set to play the winner of No. 12 Kentucky vs. No. 13 Georgia in the first round.

SEC Women's Basketball Tournament Bracket 2024

This season, Tennessee is 1-0 against both Georgia and Kentucky, winning 95-73 back on Feb. 1 against the Bulldogs and 87-69 on Jan. 7 against the Wildcats.

Tennessee will be hunting for its 18th all-time SEC title. For the past three seasons, the Lady Vols have been on the razor’s edge of winning the tournament, losing to eventual champions South Carolina in 2021, Kentucky in 2022, and South Carolina again in 2023.

What to know about Murfreesboro area high school softball in 2024, including players to watch

tennessee travel softball

Murfreesboro area high school softball teams kicked off the TSSAA 2024 season Monday.

Here's a preview of area teams, including players to watch.

Murfreesboro area high school softball 2024 storylines

Eagleville softball: it's championship or bust.

Eagleville's softball team has reached the Class 1A state championship game three consecutive seasons, including taking home the title in 2022.

The team returns most starters from that team, including a large junior group that has been fixtures in the lineup since they were eighth graders, led by Clemson commitment Addisyn Linton and Arkansas commitment Brinli Bain. Add two freshman who started last season in Ashtyn Walker and Madison Davenport and the team has a wealth of both youth and experience with state title aspirations again.

New look in TSSAA softball's District 7-4A

District 7-4A will be considerably stronger this season, as the league has added Cookeville, Wilson Central and Lebanon to join Smyrna, Stewarts Creek and La Vergne.

Gone are Antioch and Cane Ridge — two teams that struggled mightily in 2023. Smyrna and Stewarts Creek both reached the region last season, with the Lady Bulldogs reaching the 4A sectional.

Riverdale softball tournament features 10 states

The Southern Warrior Classic, hosted by Riverdale, will be held March 19-27 and will include more than 80 teams from 10 states. The tournament will be played at fields throughout Murfreesboro and beyond.
